Siddons disgusted with 'ridiculous' effort

Bangladesh’s chaotic batting incensed Jamie Siddons who was withering in his assessment of the effort, calling the performance a “ridiculous” effort

George Binoy at Trent Bridge08-Jun-2009Bangladesh committed exactly the errors they knew they needed to avoid – the same mistakes they committed against India – and lost their must-win match against Ireland. The chaotic batting prompted a withering assessment from an incensed coach Jamie Siddons, who, with captain Mohammad Ashraful alongside him, called it a “ridiculous” effort.Siddons insisted after the loss to India that Bangladesh’s players were not lacking in skill anymore but were being undone by faulty decision-making while batting. Similar errors against Ireland, he warned, would be dangerous. His advice went unheeded – too many Bangladesh batsmen fell because of poor shot selection.Junaid Siddique, who began with two consecutive fours, skied a catch towards square leg. The captain Mohammad Ashraful offered a catch to first slip after being dropped at that position in the previous over. Shakib Al Hasan went for the big shot but failed to clear deep midwicket. His dismissal particularly disappointed Siddons who said the allrounder had been out “five times this tour” to the “same shot, same spot”. Tamim Iqbal, who was batting fluently, was run out needlessly. Bangladesh lost five wickets inside the first ten overs and were restricted to 137, their lowest total since they arrived in England, warm-ups included. The carelessness of their approach was perhaps best characterised by a shot Mushfiqur Rahim played in the 13th over. Bangladesh were struggling on 69 for 5 and Mushfiqur slogged the ball high in the air over midwicket. He was let off only because Trent Johnston couldn’t get to the ball quickly enough, running backwards from inside the circle though the fielder on the boundary line, Boyd Rankin, should have probably called for it. It was precisely the sort of decision that led to Siddons publicly criticising his players during the post-match press conference.”There’s nothing we can do if they’re going to keep making mental errors like that, the same mistakes over and over,” Siddons said, while Ashraful was seated by his side. “We train for it, we talk about it, we do everything we can. Even Ash [Ashraful] made the same mistake. He hit the ball to the bloke the over before and went and did it again, saying ‘catch me this time’. Five, six, maybe seven batsmen got out to ridiculous shots.”We didn’t make anywhere near enough runs, the par score there against any attack is 170. It’s a flat wicket, fast outfield, a short boundary to one side. We had a reasonable start, we were 40 or 50 off the first six and from there 160 is [possible] if you bat sensibly to a plan, but if the boys just keep disobeying the plan you end up with a shitty little score like 130. I’m borderline disappointed and angry. I’m not sure which way to treat them when I speak to them in a minute.”The plan, as Ashraful revealed after the match, was for Bangladesh to try and score 60 during the Powerplay with their top-order batsmen – Tamim, Junaid and Ashraful – going after the bowling. If around two wickets fell, the plan was to try and score 60 off the next nine without loss. All the strategizing came to nothing as wickets fell in quick succession.”Our boys, they get it their way a lot, they don’t tend to listen too well. It’s time some pressure is put on them to listen,” Siddons said. “From the captain down, if they don’t want to listen, well we’ve got to move on. They need to listen right from getting to the bus on time; you know they do it their own way a bit. We’ve come a long long way but we need to come a lot further.”Ashraful called it the “worst match they played on tour” and without a doubt it was. Bangladesh had a terrific opportunity to make the Super Eights, needing to beat only Ireland. On the day, however, the Associate’s players kept their heads and sent the Full Member crashing out of the tournament.

Gers fans unhappy with this club update

Some Glasgow Rangers fans are livid with club’s update on the potential of certain supporter health and safety requirements needed to visit matches at Ibrox this season.

The start to the new campaign has been a relatively good one for the Gers, having won five of their first seven Premiership matches (Rangers). Despite being on the losing side once, they are six points ahead of Celtic in the table (BBC), having already beaten their fierce rivals 1-0 this term.

After not being able to attend stadiums last term, fans have been able to see matches live at the grounds since the start of the season. However, from October 1st it seems, vaccine passports will be needed for those wanting to attend events of more than 10,000 people (via The Daily Record) – and this has not gone down well with the Gers supporters.

The club has confirmed they have received an update from the Scottish government, and the fans will receive further guidance on the exact regulations in due course.

The news was shared on Twitter, and it attracted plenty of attention from the supporters. They took to the social media platform to share their thoughts.

Let’s see what the fans had to say about the update below

“The family stand will be half empty on Sunday unless kids are exempt – which in doing so would make the whole exercise even more pointless”

“I’ve got my vaccine passport but they shouldn’t be need ….. it’s a disgrace that someone who doesn’t believe in the vaccines should be punished by not getting to see there team play .”

Seamers hand West Indies the advantage

The Bangladesh batsmen played poor cricket to be bowled out 238 on the second day in Kingstown

The Bulletin by Sriram Veera10-Jul-2009
Scorecard and ball-by-ball details
How they were outTino Best got rid of Tamim Iqbal and Mohammad Ashraful with similar deliveries•DigicelCricket.com/Brooks LaTouche Photography It was a dreamy day for the second-string West Indies team. Make no mistake, they are still just a makeshift attack but Bangladesh played poor cricket to be bowled out for 238. It could have been worse, as they were struggling at 172 for 8, but Mashrafe Mortaza and Shahadat Hossain swung their bat bravely post-tea – after rain robbed much of the second session’s play – to push Bangladesh towards respectability. They then dealt West Indies an early blow, Shakib Al Hasan trapping Dale Richards, who celebrated his Test debut with a stunning pulled six to get off the mark, plumb in front to ensure Bangladesh ended the day on a high.In that phase of relative recovery led by Mortaza and Shahadat and later during Shakib’s two-over spell, there was turn and bounce on offer to the spinners which would have interested Bangladesh immensely. It would have offered them hope that they could still come back in the game after the meek capitulation by their top-order batsmen against a spirited West Indies team.West Indies fans wouldn’t have expected magic balls from a weakened attack and there weren’t any today. However, what they would have hoped for is discipline, commitment, and hunger from the group of men who had been given this unexpected honour to play Test cricket. And they didn’t disappoint today. It was a professional, disciplined performance from the bowlers who repeatedly kept hitting the right line and length on a slow wicket. Nearly everyone produced their top game.Take Tino Best for example. He has, in the past, been guilty of trying to bowl faster than what he was capable of and being erratic as a result. Today, he repeatedly hit the short-of-length in the off-stump channel and slipped in the occasional bouncer. He struck the early blow, luring Tamim Iqbal into a fatal drive with a full delivery outside off in his first over of the day. He returned later to repeat the delivery against Mohammad Ashraful, who also edged it behind. His celebrations after taking a wicket – the wild run and pumping of the fist – remained as colourful as ever. While Best is a known name in international circuit, what would have really warmed the hearts of Caribbean fans is the emergence of the 21-year old fast bowler Kemar Roach. There was enough on show today to make one believe that Roach won’t need a strike by the main players to play for West Indies in the near future. It was said that early in his career he used to chiefly dart his deliveries into the right-handers but in the recent past, he has worked hard to get the one that straightens and even curve away. There were two Roach moments that stood out today. The first was a lovely rueful smile as he stood in the middle of the pitch after beating the bat for the nth time without any luck. The second, an act of pride, arrived when lady luck eventually smiled on him; he kissed the Caribbean emblem on his shirt after taking every wicket. His day’s work had started with a series of heartbreaks as he repeatedly harassed Raqibul Hasan outside the off stump without any luck. Time and again, Raqibul drove and jabbed his bat inside the line of the deliveries that straightened outside the off stump. Roach got the edge on one occasion but the ball flew straight between first and second slip. Ironically, Roach himself gave a reprieve to Raqibul when he dropped a sitter at backward square leg off the bowling of Darren Sammy. Roach was impressive against the right-hand batsmen but, against the left-handers, he kept pushing the deliveries a touch wide across the body. In the second session, he returned to trouble Mahmudullah with a mixture of outswingers and yorkers before inducing an edge to backward point. And in the final session, he took out Mashrafe Mortaza with a lovely leg cutter.Like Roach and Best, every bowler did his job. Sammy is your essential bits-and-pieces player who looks unthreatening with ball or bat in hand. But no can accuse him of over-extending himself and being unaware of his limitations. Today, again, he kept it simple, honing in and around the off stump with gentle medium pace. He was a touch lucky to get the wicket of Imrul Kayes, who looked the best of Bangladesh top-order batsmen. Kayes shouldered arms to a length delivery that straightened a touch on the off stump line and was struck on the pad. He was given out lbw though the ball appeared to be missing off.Dave Bernard’s art is very similar to that of Sammy: steady supply of well-directed medium pace bowling. After ending Raqibul’s misery with a full delivery that was squeezed straight to gully, he troubled the left-handed Junaid Siddique with his length deliveries that angled away outside off stump. In between, he hurled a short-pitched delivery that was swatted so weakly to cover that he was encouraged to try another one. That did the trick as Siddique pulled weakly straight to short midwicket. The bowling, though disciplined, didn’t deserve six wickets in the morning’s play but the Bangladesh batsmen seemed to be in a zombie mode, self-destructing systematically and regularly. Only two batsmen, Kayes and Shakib Al Hasan, showed the right approach and the skill but, unfortunately for Bangladesh, both fell to wrong umpiring decisions. Shakib, who looked assured in his brief stay, tried to sway away from a short delivery from Roach and the ball bounded off his forearm straight to gully. However, the rest of the main batsmen weren’t up to the mark and would have only added more fuel to the critics of Bangladesh. Luckily for them, Mortaza and Shahadat, the bowlers, saved them from total embarrassment.

Preece has Villa update on Arsenal target Watkins

The Birmingham Mail’s Ashley Preece has delivered an update on Aston Villa star Ollie Watkins amid speculation linking him with a move to Arsenal.

What’s the story?

Reports in recent days had suggested that Mikel Arteta’s side are interested in both Watkins and Everton forward Dominic Calvert-Lewin as they look to revamp their attack over the coming transfer windows.

But now, Preece has given a very reassuring update on where things actually stand with Villa, Arsenal and Watkins.

He said: “Elsewhere, I’m told there’s nothing in yesterday’s reports linking Arsenal with a move for Ollie Watkins.”

Villa fans will be delighted

After joining from Brentford in the summer of 2020, Watkins enjoyed a superb debut campaign in the Premier League, scoring 14 times in the top-flight and bagging against the likes of Liverpool and Arsenal too.

And when suggestions initially emerged that Jurgen Klopp’s side were actually interested in signing Watkins in the summer transfer window just gone by, former Villa star, Lee Hendrie, exclusively told FFC: “If you’re going to start selling those players to the bigger clubs, how are you meant to compete? I get that you’re possibly going to get £60m for someone, but then who do you go and buy that’s going to replace Ollie Watkins?

“You’ve got to go and spend decent money on someone to go and bring him in and then it could possibly be a gamble.”

The fact reports claimed Arsenal are also keen on Watkins is a real indication of just how much he has progressed at Villa Park, and Villa fans will no doubt have been worried that he might have been tempted with a move to the Emirates – he has previously admitted to seeing an Arsenal move as a dream.

But, Preece’s update that the Gunners link is mere speculation and nothing else should delight the club’s supporters.

Meanwhile, there’s a huge Aston Villa boost over this star…

Wolves: Noel Whelan praises Adama Traore

Adama Traore could be a huge success for Liverpool if he leaves Wolves to join the Reds, according to BBC pundit Noel Whelan.

The Lowdown: Traore linked with Wolves exit

The 25-year-old has been linked with a move to Anfield in the January transfer window, which would provide Jurgen Klopp with extra attacking depth.

Traore’s current Wolves deal expires in the summer of 2023 and there is little sign of him extending his stay at Molineux as things stand.

The Latest: Tipped to shine to Liverpool

Whelan believes that the Spain winger could excel in a Reds shirt, telling Football Insider that the 25-year-old could be similarly influential to superstar Liverpool pair Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane.

The BBC pundit said:

“He’s a player who can be crucial to winning football matches.

“His pace, his aggression, his direct running – and now his end product, which he’s brushed up after his early days in the Premier League.

“He’s a more complete player now, he can get a cross into the box or a shot off on goal. If you think about it, would he fit into Liverpool’s style of play? Absolutely.

“He can be just as destructive as Salah and Mane in that side.”

The Verdict: Keep hold of him

Losing Traore would be a big blow for Wolves at a time when he is still maturing as a player and should have his best years ahead of him.

As Whelan suggested, the winger is becoming a more polished footballer, winning four Man of the Match awards from WhoScored in just seven Premier League appearances this season. He also has more dribbles per game than any other player in Europe’s major leagues, with a remarkable match average of seven (WhoScored).

That highlights how important he is to Bruno Lage, with his pace arguably the most frightening in the league, giving him a potentially match-winning attribute which Wolves cannot afford to sacrifice too readily.

In other news, Wolves have received a potential boost in their efforts to sign one player. Find out who it is here.

Gritty Pakistan batting forces draw

Ahmed Shehzad and Azhar Ali blocked out the Sri Lanka A bowlers with marathon innings

That brought together Shehzad and Ali, who frustrated Sri Lanka’s bowlers with 93 for the third wicket.Runs came at a crawl, with both batsmen content on playing safe. After Shehzad’s dismissal, Ali continued to keep the bowlers at bay till the end and was well supported by Fahad Masood, who took 50 balls for his 7. There was one more blip, with Pakistan reduced to 138 for 6 at one stage, but Sri Lanka ran out of time to bowl out the tourists.Suraj Randiv capped a successful match as he picked up three wickets in the innings to finish with match figures of 7 for 139.The second unofficial Test begins in Colombo on Thursday.

Newcastle: Emery among leading candidates

An update has emerged on Newcastle’s search for a manager to replace Steve Bruce, regarding the main candidates in the race…

What’s the talk?

According to The Times, Villarreal’s Unai Emery, Rangers’ Steven Gerrard and Belgium’s Roberto Martinez are leading the way as PIF weigh up their options in the managerial market.

The report claims Bruce will remain in charge until a replacement is found, with the club seemingly narrowing their search down to these three names.

Excitement

This update from The Times will surely leave Newcastle fans feeling excited as all three of the leading candidates have their merits and could potentially be superb appointments by PIF. They are all currently excelling in their current roles, with the Magpies poaching an actively successful coach instead of picking up one who has recently been sacked.

Firstly, Martinez has had an impressive spell in charge of Belgium. He led them to third in the 2018 World Cup and fourth in the 2020 (2021) European Championships, whilst he also has over 200 Premier League games under his belt as manager of Wigan and Everton.

Gerrard, meanwhile, won the Scottish Premiership with Rangers last season. He has averaged 2.15 points per game across 186 matches in charge of the Glasgow giants, showing that he knows how to pick up points on a regular basis and would bring a winning mentality with him to St. James’ Park.

Finally, Emery has a sublime C.V. Although he endured a difficult spell with Arsenal, he has proven his quality elsewhere as a manager. During spells with Sevilla and Villarreal, he has won an eye-catching four Europa League titles, beating Manchester United in the final earlier this year to secure his fourth, whilst he also won a Ligue 1 title and two French Cups during his time with PSG.

This shows that he knows how to win trophies and he could bring that trait along with him to Newcastle. This is why Magpies fans will be excited by the news that he, along with Gerrard and Martinez, is among the contenders to replace Bruce.

They are three impressive managers with a recent track record of achieving success and could help to lift Newcastle up the Premier League table. Emery, in particular, could increase their chances of winning silverware with his trophy-laden history as a coach in Spain and France.

Nielsen gives Lee hope of final Test recall

Tim Nielsen has not discounted the prospect of Brett Lee making a surprise return for the Ashes decider at The Oval should conditions prove conducive for reverse swing

Alex Brown17-Aug-2009Tim Nielsen has not discounted the prospect of Brett Lee making a surprise return for the Ashes decider at The Oval should conditions prove conducive for reverse swing. Hot and dry weather is predicted for London for the three days immediately preceding the fifth Test – an ideal forecast for “Irish” movement – and Nielsen said Lee’s old ball prowess could yet count in his favour at the selection table.Reverse swing played a major role in England’s Ashes triumph four years ago, but has hardly figured over the course of this cooler, wetter summer. By far the most potent display of old ball movement this series was that obtained by Lee in Australia’s pre-Ashes warm-up against England Lions, during which he claimed 6 for 76 in the first innings, but an injury sustained in the latter stages of that match has thus far prevented him from playing any role in the Test series.Ricky Ponting, writing in a newspaper column this week, observed that The Oval was the one English venue at which the Australians anticipated reverse swing, “especially if we have a dry, hot week.” Nielsen echoed those sentiments on Monday, prompting speculation that Lee could be contender for Australia’s final bowling berth.”I think if it does reverse he’ll very much put his hand up,” Nielsen said. “Historically it’s a drier surface that does bounce and carry a bit and those sort of conditions can help the ball get scuffed up, which everyone knows helps it reverse. When that’s happening Brett is as good an exponent of [reverse swing] as anyone in the world. As long as he’s fit and gets through the next three days and the conditions suit, he’ll very much come into contention to play.”Lee was Australia’s leading wicket-taker during the most recent tour match in Canterbury, although appeared somewhere short of peak form in his first competitive outing in six weeks. He struggled for rhythm in his opening spell on Saturday evening, but found both speed and movement the following day to finish with figures of 3-37 from 16 overs.”He bowled with good pace, swung the new ball away then had some success reversing it in Canterbury,” Nielsen noted. “All the things he brings to the table are really positive. He’s very much putting his hand up for selection.Lee will presumably battle Stuart Clark and Nathan Hauritz for Australia’s fourth bowling slot, both of whom bring compelling cases to the selection table. Clark played a leading role in Australia’s first innings rout of England at Headingley last week, providing the accuracy and veteran presence lacking on tour to that point. Hauritz, meanwhile, has taken 10 wickets at 32.10 at Sophia Gardens, Cardiff and Edgbaston, and would offer the Australian attack an added dimension as The Oval pitch deteriorates.Nielsen said the final decision would be strongly influenced by surface conditions. “The team that played so well at Headingley has obviously given us a real quandary,” he said. “It’s a nice one, obviously, to be able to go into a Test match with our full squad available and playing well. We’ll have a look in the wicket today. Over the next two days we’ll see how it does change and once we get a feel on it we’ll make a decision on what the squad will be.”We’re trying to be sensible and calm and make the best decisions about what the best team is for the conditions we play in. I expect that if the wicket looks like it will bounce and carry it will bring the fast bowlers into the game. The big thing is to ensure that we’ve got the balance right for a wicket that will obviously deteriorate over the five days. My understanding is the forecast is pretty good so with a bit of sun around it will dry up over the time of the game.”Clive Stephens, Surrey’s operations director, predicted The Oval’s veteran groundsman, Bill Gordon, would produce an even, well-grassed surface that would assist batsmen over the first three days and deteriorate thereafter. Stephens was not, however, optimistic that reverse swing would play a major factor in the fifth Test.”I don’t think so this year,” said Stephens, when asked whether old ball movement had been prevalent during Surrey’s home games this season. “Whether reverse swing will come into it, I don’t know, but we’re aiming to do out there is to provide a great wicket and a great outfield that sets the stage for a great competition.”

Rangers: Ross Wilson set for AFCON talks

Rangers are hopeful of reaching an agreement with the Nigerian FA that will allow Leon Balogun, Joe Aribo and Calvin Bassey to feature against Celtic in January, according to The Sunday Mail.

The lowdown

Rangers are due to travel to Celtic Park for what will be the season’s second Old Firm on 2 January.

According to FIFA rules, clubs should release players who have been called up for the Africa Cup of Nations on 27 December. That would mean Rangers would lose the aforementioned trio for the trip to their Glasgow rivals.

But Nigeria are not due to kick-off their AFCON bid until 11 January, when they face Egypt.

Aribo has started nine of Rangers’ SPFL matches so far, Balogun eight and Bassey four. All three players feature in the Gers’ top seven performers up to this point when you go by WhoScored’s data.

Steven Gerrard raved about Aribo last week, hailing him as an ‘outstanding’ player and ‘a joy to watch’ before confessing that Rangers will ‘be lucky to keep him’.

The latest

Rangers are thought to be confident that they can strike a deal with Nigeria, delaying the trio’s arrival in the camp until after the derby.

Ross Wilson and Steven Gerrard are hoping to take advantage of the strong relationship they have built with the Nigerian Football Association in the negotiations.

The verdict

After a slow start, Celtic have rattled off three successive wins to move within four points of Rangers. By the time January rolls around, this fixture could well have a season-defining air about it.

And it would be a huge blow to Rangers’ chances if they had to go without Balogun and Aribo.

They seem to be optimistic, having cultivated those good relations. But if the African associations push for a uniform release date in the interests of sporting integrity, then that could count for a little.

In other news, Jordan Campbell says this January move is possible.
