Man Utd could land Martial upgrade by reviving swoop for £58k-p/w "machine man"

Manchester United’s recent 3-0 loss to Newcastle United in the EFL Cup means that their start to the 2023/24 campaign – which has included eight losses in 15 matches – is their worst since the 1962/63 season.

The result on Wednesday ensures they will not be defending the League Cup they won back in February and with just one win in three Champions League ties along with just five wins in the Premier League, there may not be any silverware adorning the United trophy cabinet this season.

Erik ten Hag is a man coming under severe pressure and unless results perk up immediately, starting with a tie against Fulham on Saturday, then his reign at the club could be short-lived.

The Dutchman has not been helped with a plethora of injuries disrupting his squad as the likes of Lisandro Martinez, Luke Shaw and Aaron Wan-Bissaka have been missing for large spells of the current season and a failure to field a first-choice defence has hindered the club.

The players he has been able to call upon however have not delivered consistent performances which match his ambitions and this has led the Old Trafford side down a slippery slope.

It is evident that his business in the summer transfer market was far from ideal, with Andre Onana, Mason Mount and Sofyan Amrabat struggling to settle in and stamp their authority on the team.

If the Dutchman is still in the United hotseat come January, then he could use the winter window to add some much-needed quality to his squad as his attacking option have left a lot to be desired so far this season.

Indeed, Rasmus Hojlund, Anthony Martial, Marcus Rashford, Antony and Bruno Fernandes have scored just seven goals between them throughout the whole campaign.

Could this tempt Ten Hag to delve into the transfer market in a few months for another centre-forward? A previously linked striker, Benjamin Sesko, is reportedly going to be available in January for a potential move.

Man Utd transfer news – Benjamin Sesko

The Red Devils had a chance to sign the young striker from Domzale back in 2019 according to The Athletic, yet it was during the summer of 2022 when United really stepped up their interest in the youngster as Ten Hag wanted to bolster his options.

However, the Dutch boss missed out on signing him as Sesko ended up joining RB Leipzig from Red Bull Salzburg for a fee in the region of £55m.

Benjamin Sesko

Fast-forward nearly 18 months, however, and it appears as though the 20-year-old ace may be ready to move on from the German side already having failed to really settle at the Bundesliga outfit.

That’s according to 90min, who claim that United and Newcastle will be on high alert having been notified of Sesko’s soon-to-be availability.

Having signed another one of Europe’s most promising strikers in Hojlund during the summer, it looks as though Ten Hag is building a team which could challenge for honours in the future. Will he be here to see the fruits of his labour, however?

As mentioned, the United boss has been let down by the lack of goals from his attacking players this term, with Martial in particular once again failing to show the Dutchman any signs of quality.

Anthony Martial’s season in numbers

The Frenchman has just a few months remaining on his current contract at United, and It is safe to say that he has hardly done anything of note to deserve a new and improved deal.

Across the whole squad in the Premier League, the former AS Monaco striker ranks tenth for shots on target per match (0.3) along with ranking 19th for successful dribbles per game (0.1) while scoring no goals in the competition at all.

The 27-year-old dud has netted just once all season, in an EFL Cup match against Crystal Palace, and he does not appear to have enjoyed playing under Ten Hag, scoring a total of ten goals during the Dutchman’s spell at United so far.

With players such as Martial underperforming, alongside Rashford and Fernandes, it shows how little United have going forward, which is why they could make a splash in January.

Making a move for Sesko may not solve every problem they currently have, but his vast potential and clinical nature would surely ensure he is an upgrade on Martial.

Benjamin Sesko would be better than Anthony Martial

The £58k-per-week striker has scored more than Martial since the start of last season (24 vs ten) and he has been making his mark on the continent over the previous 12 months.

The Slovenian forward is already outshining the current United player for domestic performances this term, indicating exactly why he would be a wonderful signing for Ten Hag.

According to FBref, Sesko has registered more shots on target per 90 (2.1 vs 0.8) than Martial, along with registering more shot-creating actions per 90 (2.51 vs 2) and higher successful take-on percentage (62.5% vs 50%) clearly demonstrating his vast potential as a threat at the top end of the pitch this term.

With 57 goals across just 136 professional matches, Sesko has displayed a ruthlessness nature which could get better the more he develops and learns his trade.

He was lauded as a “machine man” by talent scout Jacek Kulig back in 2021 as he was bursting onto the scene with FC Liefering, and he continued that scoring streak with Salzburg before sealing his move to Germany.

Ten Hag will be buoyed by the fact he could be available in the January transfer window and making a move for the young starlet should be a priority, especially considering there are other clubs interested in securing his signature.

Martial has failed to live up to the enormous hype that was generated following his move from Monaco in 2015 and while he has shown flashes of his talent during his eight-year stint at Old Trafford, it simply has not been good enough – as his aforementioned statistics under the current boss prove.

Alongside Hojlund, Sesko could be a future star and the Red Devils will know that if they lure him to Manchester, he could develop into a fantastic option for them at the top end of the pitch, which is not what their current French marksman is.

James Neesham wants to play all three forms for New Zealand

More than 15 months since his last international appearance, an out-of-favour James Neesham is aiming for the allrounder’s spot in the side

ESPNcricinfo staff28-Sep-2018More than 15 months since his last international appearance, an out-of-favour James Neesham is aiming for the allrounder’s spot – across formats – in the New Zealand side, as the selectors continue to weigh their options for a long-term pick from a pool that also features Corey Anderson and Colin de Grandhomme.”I’ve put my stake in the ground and said I want to play all three forms for New Zealand, not for the next 12 months but for the next 4-5 years,” Neesham told . “What the New Zealand team is crying out for is an allrounder they can rely on day in, day out, and not someone who’s just going to turn up now and then. That’s where I want to put my stake in the ground and say through domestic performances, ‘here I am, I’m ready to go’.”Neesham, 28, has played 12 Tests, 41 ODIs and 15 T20Is, but none since the ODI against Bangladesh in Cardiff during the 2017 Champions Trophy. A dip in form, particularly with the ball, in the season that followed resulted in him falling out of favour with the selectors.Neesham was then omitted from NZC’s list of 20 contracted players for the 2018-19 period, with selector Gavin Larsen stating he needed to “demand our attention again through domestic performance.”Within a fortnight, Neesham ended a seven-year tenure with Otago and signed with Wellington Firebirds for the 2018-19 season. At the heart of this shift of allegiance was Wellington’s coach and former national selector Bruce Edgar. Both Edgar and the Firebirds captain Michael Bracewell are believed to have played a part in giving Neesham the clarity he had been lacking for a while. His time away from cricket, he said, had been beneficial, and he hoped it will hold him in good stead when the squad for next year’s World Cup is picked. “It [World Cup] is certainly my focus, but at a more basic level than that it’s about enjoying the game again, going out and having fun, which I probably haven’t done since about 2014, “he said. “That was the main goal of my off-season, to get away from the game and enjoy it again at its most basic level. I got a bit too caught up in trying to be perfect and trying to contribute every game and that was probably detrimental.”I had a moment last season with two-three contracts in front of me that would have required me to cut down what I was willing to play for New Zealand. I looked at the options and decided I wasn’t going to be able to look back on my career at 50 if I’d taken the easy option that early.A slew of injuries, including a stress fracture in 2015, a rib injury and back spasm in the following two years, thwarted his attempts at maintaining form, but the work over the recent weeks, he said, had strengthened him both physically and mentally.”Looking at the fitness and strength results, I’m in one of the best spaces I’ve been in,” he said. “That’s allowed me to bowl more in the nets and hopefully get me to a space where my bowling is a point of difference over those other guys.”After 2015 and having a stress fracture, it took me a couple of seasons to really get fully back into bowling again. Physically I was back to 100% but mentally it takes a while for you to trust your body again and know that bowling 25 overs isn’t going to mean you can’t walk for a week.”

Derby could lose sensation who club chiefs think is a potential superstar

Despite enduring a frustrating start this season, Derby County are still within touching distance of the League One play-offs as Paul Warne looks to guide the Rams back to the Championship. The Midlands club are aiming to avoid a repeat of the previous campaign when they missed out on a place in the top six by a single point, as Peterborough secured their spot.

Currently two points adrift of Stevenage in sixth place with a game in hand, Derby's fate is in their own hands in the early stages of the season, and Warne will hope that some consistency will result in a comfortable play-off qualification come the end of the season. However, the boss could lose a player that those at Pride Park are huge fans of following some alarming transfer news.

Derby transfer news

Not exactly big spenders, the Rams brought in a limited number of reinforcements during the summer, which has seen the club enjoy little progress. Warne will hope that, as the season goes on, his side will begin to establish themselves as one of the top sides in League One. Next up, Derby square off against Barnsley, hoping to make it four games without defeat in all competitions.

Derby County manager Paul Warne.

No matter how this season goes, however, they could be forced to cope without last season's Scholar of the Year. According to Pete O'Rourke of Football Insider, both Aston Villa and Southampton are plotting January moves for Darren Robinson, whose current Derby contract comes to an end during the summer of 2024.

As the 18-year-old's contract remains on course to reach its end, Derby may be left with no choice but to cash in on their academy graduate, despite the fact that those within the club believe he could go right to the very top.

Derby should fight to keep "great" Robinson

Derby would be wise in keeping one of their best young talents in Robinson. It will be difficult to convince the midfielder amid interest from both the Championship and Premier League, but perhaps now is the time to hand the teenager more minutes in the first-team. As things stand, Robinson has made just one appearance for Warne's side this season, which came in a 4-1 victory over Wolverhampton Wanderers' U21s. The last thing those at Pride Park will want is to regret failing to agree a new contract with a player they reportedly consider to have the potential to become a superstar.

It comes as little shock that Robinson has already earned plenty of praise during his career, including from the head of youth at former club Dungannon, Dixie Robinson, who said, via Derby County News: "Darren has been excellent ever since he has came in. He got the chance to go over to Fleetwood in the winter and he asked could he train with the first team due to COVID restrictions and to be fair to him he has trained so well he has stayed with the first team since.

"Robbo has also been over at Stoke and most recently Derby where he has decided to sign for on a three year deal. Darren has a great attitude, works tremendously hard, technically very good and he gets about the pitch and I’ve no doubt, with the mindset that he has, I think he will go a long way in the game."

Spurs "to launch" bid for £61m ace now they’re unhappy with summer signing

Tottenham Hotspur are reportedly ready "to launch" a bid for a £61m player after being left "unhappy" with summer signing Brennan Johnson.

Mixed start to life for Johnson at Spurs

Arriving from Nottingham Forest on summer deadline day for around £45m, the Wales international has had quite a mixed start to life at his new club.

Johnson's been handed the starting nod on just three occasions so far by Ange Postecoglou, making another three appearances from the bench.

The 22-year-old has contributed, though, scoring in Tottenham's 2-1 loss to Wolves last Saturday and providing an assist for star forward Son Heung-min in their 2-1 away win at Crystal Palace.

Brennan Johnson

In fairness to Johnson, he suffered a hamstring injury earlier in the season which may have stifled some of his momentum.

Former Arsenal star Aaron Ramsey, speaking to the press in September, was adamant that Tottenham signed an "unbelievable talent" for Postecoglou.

"He's an unbelievable talent and has shown over the last year or so at Forest what he's capable of doing," said Ramsey.

"Hopefully he can take another step going forward, and hopefully for Wales he can be a main part of that for many years to come.

"He has so much ability, it's about us now just linking him and getting our front three really firing, playing together, giving each other opportunities and asking questions of the opposition."

Regardless, according to a report by Football Transfers, Spurs are less than impressed with Johnson and his start to life in north London.

Spurs ready Raphinha bid with Johnson failing to impress

Indeed, the outlet claims Tottenham are "not entirely happy" with the winger's performances, which has partly motivated them to look to the January transfer market in search of forward options.

As per FT, Spurs are "to launch" a bid for Barcelona forward Raphinha as a result – with both Johnson and Richarlison seen as possible weak links in the attacking areas.

Barcelona winger Raphinha.

They've also apparently dropped their interest in a striker, instead believing that Son is more than capable of leading the line after his excellent start to 2023/24.

This comes after reports that Spurs were contenders to sign Brentford striker Ivan Toney, but it is thought that Spurs are ready to drop interest in the Englishman in favour of a move for Raphinha.

Barca would apparently be willing to compromise on his £61m asking price by including Cristian Romero in a swap deal, though we can't see Spurs being open to letting him leave.

The Brazilian, on a reported £206,000-per-week at Camp Nou (GiveMeSport), scored seven goals and assisted seven others in 36 La Liga appearances under Xavi last term.

Raphinha has been praised by pundit Noel Whelan too, who called him "fantastic" in an interview with Football Insider two years ago.

“Raphinha is fantastic on the ball, great on the eye and can produce moments of magic that other players simply can’t," said ex-Leeds forward Whelan.

“But what I really like is his work out of possession. He is not afraid to really work hard, track back and double-up with the full-back. It is an attribute you sometimes don’t get with technically talented players. They do one side of it but not the other. That is not the case with Raphinha, though."

PCB's case against BCCI dismissed by ICC dispute panel

The ICC said the judgement was “binding and non-appealable”

Nagraj Gollapudi20-Nov-2018The PCB’s attempts to claim damages worth USD 63 million from the BCCI have met with what is now a final failure: the ICC’s Dispute Resolution Committee (DRC) rejected the PCB’s claim that the BCCI’s failure to honour an agreement to play bilateral series in 2014 and 2015 was a legal breach. The three-person DRC said the claim “must fail” because the agreement signed between the boards carried a “moral obligation” but not a legal one. That will not be the PCB’s only defeat. As is the norm in arbitration cases such as this, the party that loses the case usually ends up paying the costs for the proceedings, and the BCCI confirmed that it would seek legal costs from the PCB. “After hearing the evidence and arguments of the parties over three days in Dubai, the Dispute Panel by its award published today has rejected all of the PCB’s contentions and accepted the BCCI’s case inter alia on the ground that the BCCI Letter was non-binding and merely expressed an intention to play,” the BCCI said in a statement. “The BCCI wholeheartedly welcomes the decision of the Dispute Panel. The BCCI will now move the Dispute Panel to recover its legal cost from the PCB.”In a brief initial response, the PCB said it noted the DRC decision with “regret” and “disappointment.” The PCB also said it would “determine its future course of action” after consultations with its members, but the ICC made it clear that the DRC’s judgement was “binding and non-appealable”.The panel, comprising Michael Beloff, Jan Paulsson and Dr Annabelle Bennett, conducted hearings between October 1-3 with several officials from both boards as well as senior ICC officials attending. The central question the DRC had to consider was whether the BCCI had indeed breached the agreement to play seven bilateral series between 2014 and 2023. Two of those “designated” tours were to be home series hosted by Pakistan scheduled for November 2014 and December 2015, both of which did not take place, and for which the PCB claimed damages.Ultimately, the case hinged on how the DRC viewed the agreement the two boards signed on April 9, 2014 – an agreement, incidentally, signed in the chaotic days of the Big Three governance reforms. The PCB’s contention was that it was legally binding, an argument which, at various points in its 26-page judgment, the DRC appeared to think was sustainable; the BCCI argued that it was not and that it was only one step in a process that would lead to bilateral tours. That letter was signed by Sanjay Patel, then BCCI secretary, and Najam Sethi, who was the PCB chairman in 2014. That draft agreement was a result of PCB’s conditional support of Big Three governance changes (the Big-Three model was eventually reversed by the ICC).The DRC quickly concluded that both boards were at “cross purposes”. The BCCI said the agreement was the first step which involved boards proposing dates, followed by a second step where member boards agreed to an FTP schedule for the commercial cycle 2015-23, and a final step involving member boards entering into bilateral FTP agreements in accordance with that schedule. The PCB, however, considered the April letter to be, “in itself”, legally binding, and “any subsequent FTP Agreement to be no more than a formality, ‘a routine matter’, as Mr Sethi for the PCB put it in his oral evidence.”However, it would not have helped the PCB’s case that they sent the BCCI a draft long-form FTP agreement in June 2014, which was never signed, but which could imply that the PCB itself recognised the need for further steps after the April letter. And in an internal PCB board meeting, members were told that an MoU had been agreed but that a “legally binding agreement will subsequently be signed” – the implication again that the April agreement was not so.The DRC rejected the PCB’s claim that the April letter was a “quid pro quo” for its support to the Big Three’s attempts to overhaul the ICC’s governance and financial structures. The DRC pointed out that it was not the BCCI, but in fact, Cricket Australia and the ECB that had told the PCB they would not sign FTP agreements if the PCB did not agree to the Big Three model. But the complexities of the matter were apparent in the judgment, with the DRC rejecting the BCCI argument that the April letter was “uncertain and incomplete” and “therefore could not be contractually binding.” It was “a difficult argument to sustain (and one which the Panel rejects) for various reasons including BCCI approving bilateral tours without FTP agreements.”Their conclusion, eventually, fell against the PCB’s claims on a line of argument raised by the current ICC chairman, Shashank Manohar. The April 9 agreement, according to the DRC, was at most a “letter of intent”. If seen through a “microscope” the DRC said the PCB argument that the letter was a binding agreement “burns bright.” But if a “telescope is deployed”, and a broader take is considered, the argument is “extinguished.””In the Panel’s view, the reasonable observer apprised of all the facts would conclude that the April Letter was no more than a declaration of intent, albeit an intent sincerely held by the BCCI (and of course by the PCB) at most, as Mr [Shashank] Manohar (President of the BCCI from October 2015 to May 2016) put it, creating a “moral obligation” but not a legal one. Context trumps text.”
