Future is bright for England with spin triplets on the rise

Player of the Series against West Indies, Sarah Glenn, takes next step alongside Sophie Ecclestone and Mady Villiers

Valkerie Baynes01-Oct-2020Sarah Glenn knows she’s part of something “special” so while she appreciates what she has from within, team-mates and fans can marvel at an exciting era in England women’s cricket.Named Player of the Series after England’s 5-0 sweep of their T20I series against West Indies on Wednesday night, Glenn is one element in a three-pronged spin attack that looks set to feature internationally for years to come. The variety offered by left-armer Sophie Ecclestone, the world’s No.1 T20I bowler, Glenn’s legspin and the offspin of Mady Villiers gives England a raft of options. Plus, Ecclestone and Glenn are just 21 and Villiers 22.”It’s really special,” Glenn said of being part of the close-knit trio. “I absolutely love it. We click really well together on and off the field and I feel like I can just go and talk to them about anything.”We help each other on the pitch, talk about what the pitch is doing, how they’re playing, what’s the best ball and then time off the pitch is great, we all have a great laugh. We’re just really happy for each other, seeing each other do well, it’s really exciting to see.”Sophie Ecclestone and Sarah Glenn arrive for the final T20I vs West Indies•Getty ImagesShe echoed similar sentiments at this year’s T20 World Cup in Australia from Ecclestone, who spoke of their “spin companionship”.”They are some of my best friends now, and it’s really nice to have them performing well and winning games for England,” Ecclestone said in March. “It’s a dream come true really.”Heather Knight, the England captain knows she’s been dealt an exceptional hand.”It’s great to have,” Knight says. “We’ve obviously got a lot of experience in our seam department and those spinners just give us a few different options so we can match up against different batters. In T20, that’s very important. They can take wickets, control other teams’ batters in different conditions. It’s really pleasing.”ALSO READ: Knight, five others head to WBBLWhat struck Knight most about her spinning youth brigade during the series against West Indies was their courage, epitomised in Glenn’s lbw dismissal of Deandra Dottin in the second T20I, a full, looping legbreak that Dottin aimed to sweep and missed.”Sophie and Sarah have been consistently in the side for a long time now and really done well for us,” Knight said “To see Mady take her opportunity like that – she obviously didn’t bowl in the first game due to a few tactical bits, but yeah really delighted for them.”They’ve been really brave as well, you saw Sarah Glenn get Deandra out the other day by tossing the ball up, and if you don’t quite get that right you know it’s going to go the distance.”It’s been really pleasing to see them be really brave in how they go about things in looking to take wickets which is something we want to keep on doing as a side – something we’ve addressed since the World Cup that we want to get better at, taking wickets particularly through that middle period – and those spinners are a massive part of that.”Glenn’s seven wickets for the series against West Indies came at an average of 12.00 and an economy rate of 5.60. Her 46 runs included a valuable 26 from 19 balls which rescued England from 96 for 6 and carried them to a what proved to be a winning total in a Player-of-the-Match performance in the second fixture. While Ecclestone played her first T20I as a 17-year-old in 2016, Glenn only made her international debut last December, against Pakistan in Kuala Lumpur in the lead-up to the T20 World Cup, and she went on to impress in four matches at the global tournament, claiming six wickets.Villiers also truly came into the reckoning for England during that warm-up series in Malaysia having played just one international match, a T20I against Australia during the Ashes the previous July. She had to wait until the last group match against West Indies to feature at the T20 World Cup, but she dismissed Shemaine Campbelle with her fourth ball, a sharp return catch in a wicket maiden.Villiers’ fielding is seen as a huge asset and there are several observers keen to see her given more of a chance with the bat as well as the ball. Ecclestone has the ability to hit big and Glenn’s innings in the second match against West Indies prompted her to declare her ambition to become a genuine allrounder.Mady Villiers forms part of England’s formidable spin trio•Getty ImagesIt is a prospect Charlotte Edwards, the former England captain and now Sky Sports commentator, sees in the future for all three England spinners.”They’re so exciting as a three,” Edwards said. “All very different, so young, but in many ways quite experienced now. It’s unbelievable really to think how good they are and how good they can be.”I think with the three of them it’s their batting that’s the exciting element for me as well, not only are they going to be world-class bowlers but I think they’re going to be really handy allrounders.”To have to have some hard-hitting batters coming in down the lower order as well as world-class bowlers, that’s so exciting. The sky’s the limit for them all, I think.”Laura MacLeod, the former England international who is now Director of West Midlands Women’s Cricket – one of the eight regional hubs for the domestic women’s game – played against a teenage Ecclestone at club level. She saw then that Ecclestone was on the right path to the England team. McLeod has also been impressed by Glenn, who played two matches for her Central Sparks outfit in the Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy, and by what she has seen of Villiers.”It’s really exciting,” McLeod said. “It’s just a coach’s dream to have a left-armer, to have a leggy and an offie that have all got talent and they’re not just talented with the ball they can all bat as well. The future for England, from a spin point of view is certainly bright.”

Mainoo has emerged as a key player for club and country after making the breakthrough last season at the tender age of just 19. The midfielder has already lifted his first trophy as a Manchester United player, after scoring in the FA Cup final win over Manchester City, and also helped England reach the final of Euro 2024.

Mainoo is part of an exciting crop of youngsters at Old Trafford, alongside Amad, Rasmus Hojlund and Alejandro Garnacho, and the Ivorian winger believes his midfield team-mate can go on to become a club legend. Given the calibre of players that have graced Manchester United's colours during the club's rich history, that's quite the compliment.

WHAT AMAD SAID

Amad told : "Talking about Kobbie is like talking about a big legend. At his age, he is so good, he is an amazing player, a good person, I'm very close to him. I think he's going to be one of the best players in Man Utd's history."

Amad also spoke about his own ambitions at the club, adding: "[I want] to win more trophies with the club. I want to win a lot, a lot, a lot of trophies, Champions League, Premier League, everything."

Sky journalist says Everton have sent a formal bid for a "very fine player"

After steering Everton well clear of the Premier League's drop zone, the higher ups at Goodison Park are hoping to reward Sean Dyche with some fresh faces this summer.

Toffees target rebuild in the middle of the park

Whilst it is hard to pick too many faults in an Everton side that finished a comfortable 15th in the Premier League despite looking nailed on for relegation due to circumstances outside of the playing squad's control, it is clear that there are still improvements to be made in the transfer window.

To make matters worse for Everton, it now appears that their star player in this position is set to depart this summer. Amadou Onana is attracting interest from across Europe with the latest rumours seeing North London rivals Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur battling it out for the 22-year-old. It is reported that the Toffees would part ways with Onana for £50 million, and the Merseyside outfit would of course then need to find a replacement.

Everton make offer for in-demand Roma player

As first reported by Sport Witness, Sky Sports journalist Gianluca Di Marzio has revealed that Everton have made an offer for Roma midfielder Edoardo Bove. The outlet states that Bove has the opportunity to leave his current club this summer after 31 Serie A appearances for Roma last season.

The 22-year-old had previously been on the radar of Leeds United, however Di Marzio states that the Whites' failure to secure promotion back to the Premier League has opened the door for the Toffees to complete the deal.

Di Marzio reports that the exact figure of Everton's bid is not known, however Roma sporting director Florent Ghisolfi is said to want around £18 million for Bove. Viewing this fee as on the high side, the Italian journalist reveals that "the next few days will show if there’ll be concrete developments in this case".

Alongside his domestic appearances for Roma last season, Bove also featured heavily in their Europa League campaign. The Italian played 11 times in the continental competition, scoring one goal in the process.

Bove's exploits for Roma last season caught the eye of many in Italian football, with even national team coach Luciano Spalletti name-dropping the 22-year-old in a press conference back in January, telling the media:

“In recent months, we saw the emergence of players we’d been tracking for a long time such as Kayode, Ranieri, Koleosho and Casadei. Bove is now a certainty. A very fine player.”

If Everton are to get a deal for Bove over the line, they will be getting a European quality midfielder that has more than enough time to develop into a potentially world class player.

CA investigates Sydney Sixers' playing XI 'administrative error'

WBBL technical committee had not approved Hayley Silver-Holmes’ return to squad but she was listed in starting XI

ESPNcricinfo staff21-Nov-2020Cricket Australia are investigating the Sydney Sixers after they included Hayley Silver-Holmes in their playing XI to face the Melbourne Renegades at North Sydney Oval on Saturday without the pace bowler being part of their 15-member squad.Silver-Holmes had been recovering from a foot injury over the previous two weeks and had been replaced in the squad by Alisha Bates. Having recovered to play Saturday’s match against the Renegades, she was listed in the starting XI, but her return to the squad had not yet been approved by the tournament’s technical committee. The “administrative error”, which the Sixers alerted officials to themselves, was only spotted shortly before she was due to take the field for the second innings and she was withdrawn with Maddy Darke acting as a substitute fielder. Silver-Holmes had not batted during the Sixers’ innings, so she had not taken any active part in the game.”The rebel WBBL is aware of an administrative error pertaining to player selection in the Sydney Sixers-Melbourne Renegades match on Saturday,” a Cricket Australia statement said.”The Sixers self-reported an issue relating to Hayley Silver-Holmes’ paperwork shortly after the Sixers-Renegades game had commenced. Silver-Holmes did not bat nor take the field for the Renegades’ run-chase. The rebel WBBL will provide an update on the matter in due course.”It meant the Sixers were a bowler short as they failed to defend 166 and although captain Ellyse Perry was still able to call on seven others, they were not able to stop Lizelle Lee and Courtney Webb steering a fine chase. The defeat left the Sixers with only a slim chance of making the semi-finals with one match left on Sunday and needing the Sydney Thunder or the Perth Scorchers to lose, then having to beat the table-topping Melbourne Stars by a big margin to improve their net run-rate.

Newcastle must consider selling Howe favourite who’s worth more than Minteh

Despite the Saudi PIF’s takeover of Newcastle United back in 2021, the club can’t spend as much money as they would’ve hoped due to the Premier League’s PSR rules.

The current owners are one of the richest in world football, but despite the Magpies qualifying for the Champions League a couple of years ago, they are limited as to what they can spend on incomings.

It’s been the opposite with Eddie Howe’s side having to offload numerous talents just to avoid a points deduction during the 2024/25 Premier League campaign.

Yankuba Minteh and Elliot Anderson are just two players who have had to be sacrificed to comply with the rules, but the club are still looking to part ways with multiple other first-team members to allow for more new additions at St James’ Park.

One player in particular could be sold during the transfer window, despite his impressive campaign last season in a year filled with various injury problems to various key squad members.

Newcastle trying to offload four first-team members

According to The Athletic, Newcastle tried to offload Kieran Trippier, Miguel Almiron, Callum Wilson and Sean Longstaff before the PSR deadline on June 30th.

Callum Wilson

£11m

#4

Kieran Trippier

£8m

The club will undoubtedly still want to part ways with the quartet, in an attempt to improve the playing squad and try to mount a push for a return to the Champions League places.

Longstaff must be the first to be sacrificed out of the four, with Howe already having more effective options in the middle of the park.

He was a key member of the Magpies squad last season, maintaining his fitness whilst others struggled, featuring in 35 matches, scoring six goals and assisting on two occasions.

However, if the club are to achieve their ambitions of fighting with Europe’s elite, they must be brutal with their departures and invest in players who are able to take them to the next level.

The club could demand a decent fee for Longstaff’s services, especially when considering his current market value as a result of his consistent run in Newcastle’s first-team.

Financial Fair Play: What is PSR, how does it work and who's in trouble?

Profit and sustainability has been a hot topic of conversation.

ByStephan Georgiou Apr 16, 2024 Sean Longstaff’s market value in 2024

The midfielder is a product of the Newcastle academy, with the club potentially able to make a decent profit on the 26-year-old in their battle to prevent a breach of FFP or PSR.

Sean Longstaff

His market value has soared as a result of his run under boss Howe, with Longstaff now valued at £21m as per Transfermarkt.

His subsequent value is higher than the recently departed duo of Minteh and Anderson, with the pair currently valued at £13.5m and £13m respectively by Transfermarkt despite both leaving the club for a combined £68m, fees that are evidently considerably above their actual realistic value.

The fact the Toon were able to secure a £30m fee for a player who didn't play a single competitive minute for them is remarkable. Perhaps Longstaff, therefore, could fetch an even prettier penny? After all, it's very rare that players represent their true value in 2024.

Whilst he’s been an excellent servant for the Magpies since breaking into the first-team, unfortunately, the club have overtaken his level, with Longstaff potentially becoming a victim of success.

Newcastle United midfielder Sean Longstaff.

With Sandro Tonali set to return from his suspension and Joelinton back to full fitness, his game time on Tyneside will undoubtedly be limited next season, so the club need to brutally part ways to raise funds and allow him to gain valuable minutes elsewhere.

Imagine him & Diomande: Rangers expected to sign £25k-p/w "monster"

Attention can start to turn towards the start of the 2024/25 campaign for Glasgow Rangers after the Scottish Premiership fixtures were released.

The Light Blues travel away from Ibrox to take on Hearts on the opening day of the season on the third of August and that means that the club have just over a month to get any business they want done before the first match.

Of course, Nils Koppen and Philippe Clement would still have almost a month left after that before the summer transfer window slams shut, but they may want as many signings in as possible before the first game to help them settle into the squad and the tactics.

Jefte, Oscar Cortes, Liam Kelly, Connor Barron, and Clinton Nsiala have already been snapped up to bolster the Belgian manager's squad after the Gers only won one trophy – the League Cup – during the 2023/24 campaign.

Rangers are now in the market for experience after landing a number of talented young players – with Cortes, Barron, Nsiala, and Jefte all being 21 or younger.

Rangers expected to sign experienced star

According to RangersReview journalist Jonny McFarlane, Koppen is expected to seal a deal to sign Norwich City central midfielder Kenny McLean this summer.

Speaking on the outlet's YouTube channel on Monday, the reporter claimed that a move for the Scotland international is "in the post" and that a transfer is moving along "nicely".

He added that the 32-year-old maestro is a player "we'll expect to see" at Ibrox for the 2024/25 campaign, with the Light Blues seemingly closing in on a swoop for the Canaries ace.

Norwich midfielder Kenny McLean.

This comes after Football Insider had reported that the two clubs entered into preliminary negotiations at the end of last month to reach an agreement for the ex-Aberdeen man.

That report also stated that the Scottish midfielder is expected to cost a fee within the region of £1m, which comes one year after the Yellows reportedly rejected an offer of £4m from Leeds United.

Interestingly, Football Insider added that Rangers could offer McLean the captaincy of the club immediately if James Tavernier moves on to Saudi Arabia before the end of the window.

The left-footed ace is not the Norwich club captain but donned the armband for the majority of last season in the absence of Grant Hanley under David Wagner.

If Koppen and Clement do, as seemingly expected, sign the Canaries star then he could form an exciting pairing with Mohammed Diomande in the middle of the park.

Mohammed Diomande's attacking potential

The impressive youngster spent the second half of last season on loan from FC Nordsjælland, where he had been managed by McLean's new boss Johannes Hoff Thorup, and caught the eye with his displays in midfield before signing a permanent deal.

In the first half of the campaign, Diomande had produced zero goals, three assists, and 1.1 key passes per game across 13 appearances in the Superliga for the Danish side.

The 22-year-old dynamo then arrived at Ibrox and elevated his attacking game to another level with his fantastic performances in the Premiership.

As you can see in the table above, the left-footed ace added a goal threat to his arsenal and provided 0.4 more key passes per game than he did in the Superliga.

However, his work out of possession let him down slightly as opposition players were able to dominate him in physical duels in the air, and he only won slightly more than 50% of his battles on the ground.

The Ivory Coast international, therefore, is not a monster when it comes to winning duels and battling against Premiership midfielders, which suggests that Rangers should look to pair him with a midfielder who can offer more of a physical presence next to him.

Why Rangers should sign Kenny McLean

This is why McLean could be a fantastic addition to Clement's squad to bolster the manager's options in the middle of the park as he has the physicality and energy to be the perfect foil for him.

The £25k-per-week Norwich star was described as a "monster" at winning the ball back by the aforementioned McFarlane and that is backed up by his statistics last season.

His performances in the English Championship proved that he has the energy, defensive awareness, and tenacity to consistently break opposition attacks from a midfield position.

As you can see in the table above, McLean provided far more for his team out of possession than Diomande did for Rangers, including in physical duels.

This suggests that the Scottish battler would be the perfect partner for the Ivorian star as his sublime defensive work could allow the 22-year-old to push further forward to weave his magic at the top end of the pitch.

Norwich City'sKennyMcLean

The Norwich ace is not limited to just being good off the ball, however, as he ranked within the top 19% of Championship midfielders for progressive passes (6.41) per 90, which shows that the Gers target is a forward-thinking midfielder who constantly looks to find his teammates in advanced positions.

McLean could also be a fantastic signing due to his experience, particularly in the league, as he made over 250 appearances in the Premiership earlier in his career and has racked up over 200 outings for the Yellows since 2018.

This suggests that he would be able to make an immediate impact on the pitch for the Light Blues as he has been there and done it in the Scottish top-flight and in England over the course of a number of years.

He's wanted: Rangers must sell £5.6k-p/w man who scored fewer than Silva

The Light Blues must cash in on the underperforming winger this summer.

Therefore, the 32-year-old ace could be a fantastic option for the club to bring in as an experienced and defensively impressive partner for Diomande.
