Adam Voges: Fourteen-game BBL season 'too long'

“I’ve love to see it reduced a little bit and find a window where we can get the best players playing”

Daniel Brettig22-Nov-2020Adam Voges, the Perth Scorchers coach, has delivered a strong criticism of the 14-game length of the regular Big Bash League season, while opting for some cautious optimism about rule changes that have been brought in as an attempt to “spice up” the tournament after several years of declining broadcast audiences. In a week when there has been plenty of criticism of the introduction of changes including a substitute player, the splitting of powerplay overs into an initial four followed by a floating two rather than the usual six at the start of an innings, and the adding of a race for a bonus point at the 10-over mark of a match, Voges said the main issue for the league was player availability. At its current 14-game season length, Voges said that not enough of the best players – both local and overseas – were able to take part. While all clubs and players have long accepted Cricket Australia’s desire to run the tournament through the school holiday period to ensure maximum exposure to children in particular, its rapid growth from eight to 10 to 14 games has only added pressure to sustain interest in the event through the acquisition of bigger name players.”Yeah I’ve got a view on this, I think the season is too long,” Voges told . “I’d love to see it reduced a little bit and find a window where we can get the best players playing. That’s the most important part, I think that’s what makes the product, it’s aimed still at families and attracting new people to the game, so if we can do that by having the best players playing, and if that means a shorter, sharper format, then I’m all for it.”Defenders of the tournament’s length at CA have argued that at 14 games it is still shorter than an AFL or NRL season, while at the same time out-rating both in terms of broadcast audiences, despite a marked decline that began in 2017. However there is no top-tier Australian domestic league that competes with the international variant of the same game at the same time, and it is clear that the “major event” buzz surrounding the early seasons of the BBL had much to do with shorter, sharper schedules.Davie Barham, the former Ten broadcasting executive who was commissioned by CA to review the BBL ahead of its tenth season, had stated that organisers needed to be “brave” and recognise that bigger is not always better. He cited how the NFL had maintained a massive captive audience through the major events standing of an annual season that is only 18 rounds long – far fewer than the rival NBA or MLB seasons. As for the rule changes, Voges stated that while he was fearful that new followers of the game might find them difficult to comprehend, he would be doing his utmost as coach of the Scorchers to use the new tactical nuances to his advantage. “I’ll go in with these rule changes with the glass half-full mentality and try and find a way to tactically use them to our advantage in any way that we can,” he said. “But I do worry that a game and a format of our game that targets families, targets new people, that we perhaps are complicating it a little bit.”But look it hasn’t been trialled, it hasn’t been tested, we’ll all be thinking on our feet, and we’ll see how it goes.”

Nottinghamshire sign Zimbabwe Under-19 wicketkeeper Dane Schadendorf on two-year deal

Teenager became a viral hit with a legside stumping that evoked MS Dhoni in his prime

Matt Roller09-Dec-2020Nottinghamshire have announced the signing of Dane Schadendorf, a teenaged wicketkeeper who played for Zimbabwe in the 2020 Under-19 World Cup, on a two-year contract.Schadendorf became a viral hit in the warm-up matches ahead of the tournament, thanks to a legside stumping in a fixture against New Zealand that evoked MS Dhoni in his prime. He also made 81 against eventual finalists India in a warm-up match, though was less successful in the World Cup itself with 138 runs in nine innings.

He was born in Harare, but will qualify as a local player in county cricket thanks to a British passport. He had played club cricket for Caythorpe as well as for Nottinghamshire’s Under-18s and second XI in the 2020 season.”My game is probably more suited to white-ball cricket at the moment, but I’m working really hard on my red-ball game, and I think I’m getting better,” Schadendorf said. “My aims for the next year or so are just to get off to a good start here, score as many runs as I can, and try to stake my claim for a place in the first team.”Mick Newell, Nottinghamshire’s director of cricket, said: “We believe there’s a high ceiling of potential there… we hope to see him pushing for a place in our first team in the near future.”Schadendorf follows his compatriot Nick Welch in signing a county contract. Welch, a 22-year-old top-order batsman, gained British citizenship in September and played five games for Leicestershire in the T20 Blast.Welch will play for Mountaineers in the Logan Cup, Zimbabwe’s major domestic competition, which started on Wednesday. There is further representation from county cricketers in the tournament in the shape of Shane Snater, the Essex seamer, and Ben Curran, the Northamptonshire opener and brother of Sam and Tom, who will both play for Southern Rocks.

Fabrizio Romano: Crystal Palace eye move for £34m ace compared to Di Maria

Crystal Palace are eyeing a move to sign a £34m attacker, with Oliver Glasner seemingly wanting one more high-profile signing.

Crystal Palace's summer transfer window so far

While Dean Henderson, Marc Guehi, Eberechi Eze and Adam Wharton have been away at Euro 2024 with England, Dougie Freedman and Glasner have been hard at work making preparations for the new season at Selhurst Park.

It will be Glasner’s first full campaign in charge of the Eagles, and there have already been some noticeable incomings and one big departure from the playing squad. In regards to arrivals, centre-back Chadi Riad was the first to join from Real Betis, and he’s been followed by attacking midfielder Daichi Kamada, who left Lazio as a free agent.

Daichi Kamada

The one major exit has been Michael Olise, who has now officially completed his move to European giants Bayern Munich. Steve Parish told the club’s official website after the move was announced:

“We are hugely proud of what Michael has achieved at Crystal Palace, a club where he has developed greatly as a player. We respect his desire to further test himself at the highest level of world football, and I would like to personally wish him the very best for his next adventure with Bayern Munich in Germany which I’m sure we will all follow closely.”

Now, a replacement for Olise appears to be required, with Palace losing a player who scored 10 Premier League goals and provided six assists in just 19 games last season.

Former Watford winger Ismaila Sarr is just one wide attacker to be linked with a move to London, with a fee of around £20m needed for the Marseille man. However, Fabrizio Romano has shared a new update on another attacker who is valued at €40m (£34m).

Crystal Palace eyeing Matias Soule move

Talking to GiveMeSport, Romano stated that Juventus winger Matias Soule is a player Palace are eyeing, alongside top-flight rivals West Ham and Leicester City, with Glasner wanting “one more player”.

“Another player they've been tracking is Matias Soule but Juventus want €40 million for him. Also, West Ham United and Leicester City are interested, but €40 million is a lot of money, so not that easy. And I expect Crystal Palace to do something absolutely because Oliver Glasner, apart from obviously Daichi Kamada joining, wants one more player.”

Soule spent last season out on loan with Frosinone, where he was compared to Argentine icon Angel Di Maria.

He scored 11 Serie A goals and provided three assists in 36 league appearances, catching the eye of analyst Ben Mattison , who hailed Soule as a “really entertaining player”.

“Soule is just generally a really entertaining player to watch. He plays with flair and a level of confidence that’s so engaging. The Argentine has an inevitability about him – he always is looking to make something happen & when he has the ball in certain areas, he will.”

Man City player ratings vs Sporting CP: Erling Haaland humiliated by hat-trick hero Viktor Gyokeres as Man Utd-bound Ruben Amorim fires Pep Guardiola warning of what's to come in Champions League thrashing

The Norwegian striker wasted numerous chances in Lisbon, including a missed penalty, but his fellow Scandinavian showed no mercy

Ruben Amorim won the hearts and minds of Manchester United fans a week before taking charge at Old Trafford as he masterminded an incredible 4-1 win over Manchester City in his final home game with Sporting CP before heading to England. Amorim's coaching quality could be witnessed in the stupendous second goal his side scored on Tuesday, but this was also a night when Viktor Gyokeres demonstrated his striking prowess to the world, embarrassing Erling Haaland in the process.

An alert Phil Foden robbed the ball high up the pitch to fire City into a third-minute lead and the visitors could have put the game beyond doubt in the opening half an hour. Bernardo Silva went close and Haaland had three opportunities, shanking a volley off target and being thwarted by both goalkeeper Franco Israel and his nemesis Gyokeres, who cleared the Norwegian's header off the line.

City paid for their wastefulness as Gyokeres made amends for missing an earlier sitter by equalising before the break. City were then blown apart by two incisive moves within moments of the second half starting, as Maximiliano Araújo completed a ridiculous team move and Gyokeres bagged a penalty.

City were given a spot-kick of their own for an accidental handball by Ousmane Diomande which was harsh on Sporting to say the least. Haaland, however, hit the bar and then Sporting won another penalty, allowing Gyokeres the chance to complete his treble. He duly took it.

Leeds could brilliantly replace Gray as Farke eyes move for £7m star

Leeds United failed to earn promotion back to the Premier League at the first time of asking last season, leaving them vulnerable to their key players moving on this summer.

The Whites will be playing in the second tier yet again and some players have already decided that they would like to go and play top level football.

Glen Kamara sealed a permanent transfer to Ligue 1 side Rennes earlier this week and Archie Gray completed a big move to Premier League giants Tottenham Hotspur earlier this month.

Daniel Farke is yet to add a new right-back to his squad to replace Gray, and Connor Roberts after his loan spell ended, but is reportedly eyeing up a Championship defender for his squad.

Leeds remain keen on Championship star

According to the Yorkshire Evening Press, Farke is still eyeing a swoop to sign Sheffield United right-back Jayden Bogle to bolster his options at the back.

The report claims that Leeds have already had multiple offers turned down by the recently relegated side but that has not deterred them, as they remain keen on a deal for the 23-year-old full-back, who was hailed as "outstanding" by manager Chris Wilder.

Jaden Bogle for Sheffield United.

It has been reported that the Blades are looking for a fee of £7m for the defender, who only has one year left on his deal at Bramall Lane, and the Whites have not decided to meet that valuation as of yet.

Leeds could brilliantly replace Gray, though, if they can reach an agreement with Sheffield United to bring the English ace to Elland Road before the end of the transfer window.

Why Leeds should sign Jayden Bogle

In terms of a right-back replacement in the here and now, rather than focusing on Gray's age and potential to play in midfield, Bogle could be a fantastic signing to slot in on the right side of Farke's defence.

Firstly, his defensive statistics from the 2023/24 campaign suggest that he could provide a similar level of quality and physicality out of possession in comparison to the new Spurs signing.

As you can see in the table above, they both win possession back through tackles, interceptions, and recoveries at a similar rate and do not make critical errors defensively, whilst they both win the majority of their physical duels.

Bogle's previous form for Derby County in the Championship also suggests that the potential is there for him to provide a creative threat down the right flank.

In the 2018/19 and 2019/20 campaigns combined, the young defender racked up 13 assists for the Rams. Whereas, Gray only managed two assists in the division last term.

Farke could, therefore, unearth a right-back with the quality to offer more than the teenage academy graduate at the top end of the pitch if he can help Bogle to rediscover his knack for assisting goals, making him a brilliant replacement for Leeds due to his ability in and out of possession.

Joe Root excited by pink ball possibilities as England aim to 'exploit' conditions

Tourists hopeful that recent memories of 36 all out will play on Indian minds

George Dobell22-Feb-2021Joe Root believes a seam-orientated third Test could prove to be to England’s advantage and leaves them in “a great position” at the halfway stage of the series. While Root, England’s captain, was adamant the pitch in Ahmedabad would provide assistance to spin bowlers at some stage, he also suggested the fact that the game is a day-night encounter involving a pink ball could prove encouraging for seam bowlers. In the only previous day-night Test played in India, in Kolkata in November 2019, seam bowlers took all but one of the wickets to fall with India’s spinners bowling only seven overs in the match. At the same time, England’s seamers have been pleasantly surprised by the assistance provided by the pink SG in training and know that, in India’s previous pink-ball Test, in Adelaide in December, they were bowled out for 36 in their second innings.Given England’s obvious struggles against spin in the second Test, when they were defeated by more than 300 runs, any suggestion that conditions will favour seam bowling is likely to be seized upon with relief. As a result, England could be persuaded to go into the Test with only one frontline spin bowler and choose to play an extra seamer, instead.Related

Root, at least, believes that while England must be prepared for a further trial by spin, they are relatively well-placed to respond should seam prove to be more effective.”We are 1-1 with a pink-ball game two days away,” Root said. “It’s a great position to be in from our perspective. It’s a very exciting prospect for the group.”Playing against India in the subcontinent you expect the ball to spin and I’m sure at some point it will. But if conditions are more seam-orientated, then the experience of growing up in English conditions should be in our favour. It’s about handling those conditions as best we can and try to exploit them with ball in hand.”If we can exploit that [events in Adelaide] then that’s something we will look to do. But you have to earn the right, make early inroads, build pressure for periods of time and put balls in good areas, challenging defences. That will be our focus; [36 all out] is more for them to worry about, for it to be in the back of their minds.”While the fortunes of the sides in both the first two Tests have appeared to be disproportionately governed by the toss, Root dismissed the idea of abandoning the toss and allowing the visiting captain, in all cricket, to decide whether to bat or bowl.”Everyone deserves home advantage, I do believe that,” Root said. “Wherever you go in the world, it’s going to be difficult and I quite like that. It’s one of the intricacies of Test cricket and makes it such a beautiful game. You’re going to have to have a well-rounded squad of players.”How different Tests in England, Australia and India can be, is what makes it very special. What makes touring the world so interesting is you have those different challenges and, if you want to be successful, you have to have an abundance of skills to manage wherever you go.”In terms of last week, I don’t think it was a brilliant pitch but I don’t think we deserved to win, either. I don’t think the toss determined it. If we’re going to become the No. 1 side in the world, we’re going to have to manage that better.”Chris Woakes bowls in the nets•ECBMeanwhile, Root underlined his sorrow at appearing to suggest, in the immediate aftermath of the second Test defeat, that Moeen Ali had “chosen” to leave the tour. While the England coach, Chris Silverwood, subsequently clarified the decision making process and the England camp had let it be known that the captain had apologised privately to Moeen, Root, in speaking publically for the first time since the incident, reiterated he considered it “completely my fault”.”I made a complete mistake,” Root said. “That was my bad, I got that completely wrong. It wasn’t a true reflection of what had happened and it left it open to interpretation, which was unfair on Moeen. I was very quick to apologise to him. He shouldn’t have been put in that position, so that’s completely my fault.”Root also confirmed that Chris Woakes, who has been an ever-present on the tour to date, will return to England at the end of the third Test. He insisted, however, this would not be relevant in selection.”It should not be factored in that he is going home,” Root said. “We have to look at how we are best going to win this Test. We will pick the side we think is best to exploit these conditions.”

Ipswich now leading race for “ridiculous” star, imagine him & Hutchinson

Ipswich Town fans will be equal measures of nervousness and excitement at this moment in time, as the new Premier League season continues to sneak up on the Tractor Boys day by day.

The nerves will come from the fact Kieran McKenna's men will be entering into the top-flight as major underdogs, with the worry they could be turned over for fun when facing off against the division's elite clubs.

Yet, Ipswich have thrived with this label above their heads before when back-to-back promotions were won unexpectedly.

Of course, the Premier League is a wildly different proposition altogether away from the challenges of the EFL, but the Suffolk outfit will hope they can stay up against the almighty odds stacked against them, with rumoured signings like these potentially helping in their mission to beat the drop.

Ipswich leading battle for Championship sharp shooter

Ipswich do now look to be leading the race to sign last season's Championship golden boot winner Sammie Szmodics this summer, with a new £8.5m bid reported to have been made by the newly promoted side.

That's the case according to football journalist Alan Nixon, with the hefty fee needed to tempt Szmodics away from Blackburn Rovers reportedly too much for Leeds United to cough up, who have also been credited as an interested party for the ex-Peterborough United attacker.

Sammie Szmodics

Therefore, Ipswich could now be in the driver's seat over ironing out a deal for the deadly sharpshooter, with a resignation almost from Riversiders boss John Eustace that a bumper switch will take place at some point this frantic transfer window.

Supporters packed into Portman Road next season will be licking their lips at the prospect of watching the decisive attacker pull on a Tractor Boys strip, even when making the perilous step up a league, knowing he could strike up a devastating duo bombing forward with another new recruit in the form of ex-Chelsea youngster Omari Hutchinson.

What Szmodics can offer Ipswich

As can be seen watching the goal clip above, Szmodics excelled running through on goal like a man possessed last campaign, before firing home with unerring coolness.

Szmodics would end up registering 27 goals in league action for a Blackburn side that were constantly looked over their shoulder at the relegation spots in the Championship, leading to so many suitors this summer wanting to snap him up to take him away from Ewood Park.

The agile 5 foot 6 attacker linking up with Hutchinson next season could see Ipswich catch the Premier League off-guard, therefore, with the former Chelsea winger helping himself to 15 goal contributions on the way to McKenna and Co winning automatic promotion away from Szmodics' exploits near the lower positions of the division.

Hutchinson's ten strikes whilst on loan came about despite the promising 20-year-old only amassing 5.22 xG overall too, with Szmodics also outperforming his own xG of 22.36.

Therefore, when Ipswich have limited opportunities to fire home a strike next season against some tough opponents, the likes of Szmodics and Hutchinson could come in handy, if they can translate their lethal displays in the Championship to a trickier league.

Described as being "ridiculous" by football journalist Josh Bunting during his golden boot winning campaign, the current Blackburn man feels worthy of testing himself in and around English football's big boys now, as McKenna continues to assemble what he believes to be a team that can compete and potentially even stay up.
