Manchester Test in question after another Covid-positive case in Indian camp

On the eve of the fifth Test, India’s training session was cancelled and the players were asked to stay in their hotel rooms

Nagraj Gollapudi09-Sep-2021In a development that could have a major impact on the fifth and final Test of India’s tour of England, one more member of India’s support staff – assistant physiotherapist Yogesh Parmar – has tested positive for Covid-19. The Indian team’s training session the day before the start of the Test in Manchester had to be cancelled as a result. ESPNcricinfo understands that the Indian squad members were asked to stay back in their hotel rooms till further notice. The Indian contingent had a meeting on Thursday morning with the BCCI, which will now liaise with the ECB on the next course of action. “We don’t know if the match will happen at the moment,” board president Sourav Ganguly was quoted as saying by PTI from a book launch in Kolkata. “Hopefully we can get some game.”Meanwhile, India’s scheduled pre-match press conference stands cancelled. It was scheduled for 3pm UK time (7.30pm IST), and was meant to be addressed by either Virat Kohli or batting coach Vikram Rathour, who is the caretaker coach in the absence of Ravi Shastri and Bharat Arun.*The uncertainty around the Old Trafford Test has hit the England camp as well with Jos Buttler saying, “we don’t know too much about it at the moment. It would be naive to speculate on what’s going on. At the moment we’re fully expecting the game to go ahead and we’re preparing that way so fingers crossed the game will go ahead.”It has been learnt that Parmar’s positive result came after a fresh round of testing on Wednesday evening; the team had trained as scheduled on Wednesday morning. It is understood that Parmar experienced Covid symptoms on Wednesday after returning from training and took the test. The concerning issue for the Indian team is that Parmar has been testing several players suffering various niggles including Rohit Sharma (knee), Cheteshwar Pujara (ankle) and Ravindra Jadeja (knee), as well as the pair of Mohammed Shami and Ishant Sharma who missed the fourth Test. Parmar, who is the second physiotherapist in the Indian medical team, had to take charge midway through the fourth Test after lead physio Nitin Patel was identified as a close contact of Shastri, who tested positive for Covid-19 on the fourth day of the Test. The entire Indian squad has since undergone another round of testing on Thursday morning. The results of these tests are awaited. In case anyone among the playing group tests positive, it could even affect the resumption of IPL 2021, which starts in the UAE on September 19, just five days after the scheduled end of the tour of England. The Indian players will fly out from Manchester to Dubai on September 15 according to the original travel plan.Related

Earlier, during the fourth Test of the series at The Oval, which India won by 157 runs to take a 2-1 lead in the series, Shastri, Arun and R Sridhar, the head coach, bowling coach and fielding coach of the Indian team respectively, had tested positive for Covid-19. That has prevented them from travelling to Manchester with the rest of the contingent.Patel was identified as Shastri’s immediate contact along with Arun and Sridhar, and was forced to isolate for a day after Shastri returned his first positive test. He has since returned a negative RT-PCR test since, and is with the team. However, in spite of the negative RT-PCR test, Patel is understood to have isolated himself from the squad and is staying on a separate floor at the Indian team hotel in Manchester. As per UK government rules, those who return positive RT-PCR tests have to isolate for ten days and return two negative tests, so Shastri, Arun and Sridhar will have to stay on in London even as the series concludes in Manchester.India’s national-team players have had to deal with more than one Covid-19-related incident in recent times, and this, in fact, is the second time Arun has been affected since reaching England. The first time was in July when Arun, as well as squad members Wriddhiman Saha and Abhimanyu Easwaran, were forced to quarantine for ten days after being identified as close contacts of training assistant/net bowler Dayanand Garani, who tested positive for Covid-19 on July 14.That was not long after Rishabh Pant, the first-choice Test wicketkeeper, had tested positive for Covid-19 as well.Even as the Indian team was grappling with these developments in England, the team that had travelled to Sri Lanka to take part in a short series of limited-overs matches had their own Covid-19 issues to deal with. First, Krunal Pandya tested positive between the first and second T20Is – which had come after the ODIs – and eight other players, who were Pandya’s close contacts, had to go into isolation too.Such was the situation that the second T20I had to be pushed back by a day, and even after that, India barely managed to field an XI.After that, two more players, Yuzvendra Chahal and K Gowtham, also tested positive, and while the others returned home at the end of the tour, Pandya, Chahal and Gowtham had to stay back in Sri Lanka, complete their quarantine, and fly back home in the first week of August after returning negative tests.*This copy was updated at 12.40pm GMT with the cancellation of India’s pre-match press conference.

Klopp, who took on his current role in October as Head of Global Soccer for the organization after stepping down from Liverpool last summer, oversees Red Bull's soccer operations across clubs such as RB Leipzig, Red Bull Salzburg, New York Red Bulls, RB Bragantino, Leeds United and Paris FC (Subject to completion). His responsibilities include advising on global scouting, developing coaches, and contributing to the overall structure and success of Red Bull's soccer ventures.

During a media briefing on Tuesday, Klopp was asked if he would consider returning to coaching at one of Red Bull’s clubs should the opportunity arise. The German said: "I will not be the coach of a Red Bull team," he said.

"That is a clear commitment. But I can’t say I will never be a coach again in my life. I am probably the only person in this room who will be asked where are you in five years, I don't have a clue. But I will not be a replacement for one of the Red Bull coaches. I hope we can create a structure where these questions will not come up at all."

THE BIGGER PICTURE

Klopp’s position with Red Bull allows him to focus on overarching strategies rather than immediate match preparations.

"It's pretty much what I wanted to do. I finished seven months ago at Liverpool. I did that consciously," he said.

"A few months after that the opportunity came up. I don't want to be a passenger or a prominent person in the room. I really want to put some value on it. I did not want to do that [be a manager] anymore. I wanted to get a new start and this is an opportunity. To add value. How it will look we will see. There is not one plan that works for all teams. We want to be the best we can be. In each department, in each club."

Klopp, who joined Liverpool in 2016, spent nine highly successful years at the club. His tenure was marked by significant achievements, including a Premier League title in 2020, a Champions League triumph in 2019, and victories in the FA Cup, League Cup, Club World Cup, Super Cup, and Community Shield. Now, the Red Bull project represents a new chapter in a storied career, one that allows him to shape the future of football in innovative ways without the rigours of day-to-day club management.

Roma leadership quitting as fans protest new Everton owners Friedkin Group

Whilst Everton fans will be pleased to finally see a conclusion on its way regarding their long-lasting takeover saga, The Friedkin Group haven’t exactly won over the fans of AS Roma in worrying signs for those on Merseyside.

Roma protests provide new concern for Everton

The Friedkin Group confirmed that they reached an agreement over the purchase of Everton, before a spokesperson told the club’s official website: “We are pleased to have reached an agreement to become custodians of this iconic football club. We are focused on securing the necessary approvals to complete the transaction.

“We look forward to providing stability to the club, and sharing our vision for its future, including the completion of the new Everton Stadium at Bramley-Moore Dock.”

Everton fans shouldn’t be too quick to celebrate just yet, however. According to Forza Roma, fans in Rome have quickly highlighted some causes for concern, recently protesting against the Friedkin Group by filling Rome with posters after the new Everton owners sacked club legend Daniele De Rossi recently.

The Italian’s exit has since led to the resignation of CEO Lina Souloukou and could also lead to the departure of sporting director Florent Ghisolfi, according to Get Italian Football News, with the club’s leading recruitment figure expected to follow Souloukou out the door.

De Rossi’s sacking should particularly concern Sean Dyche, especially with replacements such as Gareth Southgate already linked with stepping in for the Burnley boss amid Everton’s disappointing start to the Premier League campaign.

Friedkin Group must get Everton fans onside

Friedkin simply must learn from their mistakes at Roma and instantly get the fans onside at Goodison Park. Like those in Rome, the Goodison Park faithful can be as ruthless as any, meaning that any hasty decisions similar to De Rossi’s sacking should be avoided unless seen as imperative. What’s more, if the Americans have struggled at the Serie A club, then Everton will be a new and tougher challenge entirely.

The Toffees have earned just one point in five Premier League games in a crash course towards relegation as things stand. Their recent trend of losing hold of two-goal leads should be a particular concern for Dyche, who has seen both Bournemouth and Aston Villa snatch victory from the jaws of defeat in recent weeks.

The first task for Friedkin must be to simply ensure that Everton’s finances are stable and in a position to avoid any further Financial Fair Play punishment. The last thing that Dyche needs is for his side to face yet another point deduction as they look to maintain their Premier League place in the battle to survive once again.

Man Utd believe they’ll sign £10m-a-year target even if they sack Ten Hag

The Manchester United hierarchy believes they can sign a £10 million-a-year international regardless of Erik ten Hag’s future, according to a new report.

It has been a disappointing and frustrating start to the season for the Red Devils, as poor performances and results have led to questions being asked about the long-term future of Ten Hag. A meeting in London was conducted on Tuesday, but as of now the Dutchman remains in charge at Old Trafford.

Man Utd now tracking 22 y/o Arsenal target as new competition for Onana

Man Utd have set their sights on a new goalkeeper for 2025.

1 ByBrett Worthington Oct 9, 2024 Latest Man Utd transfer news

A lot of the talk around United is obviously about Ten Hag’s future, but even though it is only October, there has been a bit of speculation about who the club could be looking to target in 2025.

United could be in the market for a new goalkeeper in the New Year, or one that could at least provide competition for Andre Onana. A report has stated that the Red Devils are keeping a close eye on Sam Tickle of Wigan Athletic. Their recruitment team have made regular checks on the player, as they see the 22-year-old as someone who can provide cover and competition to Onana.

As well as scouting Tickle, United are keeping an eye on winger Jamie Leweling of Stuttgart. The 23-year-old has been impressive in the early parts of this season, with the Premier League side taking in Stuttgart’s recent game against Borussia Dortmund, which they won 5-1. Leweling is said to have impressed United during that game and could be a player they target to improve their wide options.

But the United chiefs are not stopping there, as they also believe they can sign an international defender to solve their left-back concerns.

Man Utd believe they can sign Ben Chilwell

According to TEAMtalk, Manchester United have made defender Ben Chilwell their top target as they look to strengthen their left-back options in January. The left-back is expected to leave Chelsea soon, with January being a strong possibility, as Enzo Maresca favours players such as Marc Cucurella, Renato Veiga, and Levi Colwill ahead of him.

The report states that teams from England and abroad are interested in signing the Englishman, who earns around £10 million a year. United continue to hold an interest in Chilwell after they looked at potentially signing him during the summer but opted against a move.

It goes on to add that United’s interest in Chilwell is regardless of what happens to Ten Hag, as they prepare to make an offer once the January transfer window comes around. The 27-year-old is considered to be at the top of their list for new left-backs, and they believe they can get their man due to his position in Maresca’s pecking order.

The concern for United would be that they are not the only teams interested in the defender, as La Liga giants Atlético Madrid are also keen, while Juventus are also interested, and the pair have made enquiries to see about his availability.

'Talent without heart' – What went wrong for Man Utd hero Amad Diallo during rotten Rangers loan?

The Ivory Coast winger was given just four league starts during a disappointing spell in Glasgow but it helped mould him into the Red Devils' talisman

Ruben Amorim recently claimed that everyone at Manchester United is underperforming, but he was not being entirely honest. Amid the chaos and general decline at a club that has lost its way, Amad Diallo is playing out of his skin. The self-confessed ‘chill guy’ has fire in his belly and recently he has been forced to carry the team, which Amorim believes is the worst in Manchester United’s history, on his back.

The 22-year-old has scored four goals in his last three starts, and since November has 14 direct goal contributions. It is scary to imagine where this dysfunctional United would be without him. Since Amorim has been in charge, Amad has earned United eight extra points in the Premier League, turning certain defeats against Manchester City and Southampton into victories while setting up the goal in the 1-1 draw at Ipswich Town and scoring the equaliser in the 2-2 draw at Anfield.

Had he not intervened in those moments, United would be just two points above the relegation zone rather than enjoying a 10-point buffer from the unthinkable. Amad's emergence as United’s saviour has been particularly hard to fathom for Thursday's opponents Rangers, who had the Red Devils' latest talisman at their disposal three years ago but were far from impressed by him…

GettyExciting signing

Amad joined Rangers on loan from United in January 2022 as a highly-talented and highly-valuable 19-year-old, but one who needed to get to grips with British football and get minutes under his belt. Amad had made only 19 appearances for the Red Devils, the majority of which were as a substitute, following his big-money move from Atalanta.

In fact, he needed senior experience of any kind, as he had played just 76 minutes of professional football when United agreed to pay Atalanta a total fee of £37 million to sign him a year earlier. But Rangers were nothing like the basket case United are right now. They were Scottish champions and locked in a tight title race with Celtic while also in the knockout rounds of the Europa League.

“Rangers were going well in the league, Giovani Van Bronkchorst had made an unbelievable start in his first three months, and that January window Rangers needed two signings that could potentially tilt the league in their favour," explains journalist Jordan Campbell of , who covered Rangers at the time.

"The right-wing position was the one that was the most obvious gap in the team. Gio knew what he wanted from his wingers, he wanted one-v-one guys who could go outside and inside, were really direct, so Amad fitted the bill. The price tag made it quite exciting and so did the fact he was coming from Manchester United."

Rangers sporting director Ross Wilson described Amad as "a really exciting signing" while Van Bronckhorst, who had succeeded Steven Gerrard at Ibrox, said the winger would "add a lot to our squad".

AdvertisementGettyFrom dream debut to losing faith

Amad could hardly have had a better debut, scoring a tap-in within five minutes at Ross County and proving he was much tougher than many people expected. Particularly the home defence, who unsuccessfully tried to bully him off the ball.

That opening display earned Amad a starting berth in the Old Firm derby at Celtic Park the following week, but that proved to be too stern a test for the youngster, who was one of three players to be hauled off at half-time as Rangers trailed their hated rivals 3-0. Amad was described as a "rabbit in headlights" by ex-Scotland international Steven Thompson, and he started just two more league games, one of which came after Rangers had already surrendered the title to Celtic.

"In hindsight that really backfired. It was Gio’s first defeat and it meant that Rangers, for the first time in months, were actually behind. So I think that changed a lot of the dynamics and the mood around the place," says Campbell. "They were leading, everything was hunky dory, and then all of a sudden there's a crisis and Rangers are playing catch up. I wouldn’t go as far to say Amad was a scapegoat, but there was a sense that Gio lost trust in him."

GettyDebacle at Dundee

Things took a turn for the worse later that month when Rangers went to Dundee United needing to win to realistically stay in the title race. Amad came off the bench, and although he was on the pitch when Joe Aribo scored, he had riled fans by pulling out of a tackle. A tough afternoon was then capped when he burst though on goal with Aribo to his left, but opted to shoot and hit the post, to howls of derision from the Dundee fans.

Former Rangers player Derek Ferguson was scathing in his criticism, saying "When you come on the park, you've got to be ready. Amad Diallo just looks a bit half-hearted, so he's got to produce something." The popular Rangers podcast also showed their disapproval. "Talent without heart is nothing," they wrote on Twitter, also recommending Amad spend a week in Possil, one of Glasgow’s roughest neighbourhoods, to toughen up.

"The fans gave him a hard time that day because if there's one thing that Rangers fans do not accept, it’s jumping out of tackles, even if you’re a five-foot-five winger," Campbell says. "After he hit the post you could see the confidence draining from him. The Amad now you see is pretty ruthless in those positions, that was the big difference. It felt quite harsh that day, you think he’s a young guy from the Ivory Coast and this is something quite brutal for him to go through."

Getty Bystander in Europe

Amad did not play again in the league for nearly two months, with Ange Postecoglou's Celtic proving too strong in the title race, going unbeaten from September to May. The winger was just a bystander in Rangers' epic journey to the Europa League final, too, as despite being part of every matchday squad following his arrival, he never got on the pitch. His highlight was celebrating the semi-final second leg win over RB Leipzig on the pitch at Ibrox, sporting a Union Jack bucket hat.

"The European run was basically built on the back of Gio being a really, really good cup manager and identifying one or two things that in those knockout games gave Rangers the edge. Amad wasn't really at the stage of career where he was ready to go implement those sort of high-risk pressing strategies," Campbell says. "That's not really his game either. I don't think then he was really someone you’d think he's going to go after somebody and then make them uncomfortable. And that’s what Rangers’ European run was based on, saying 'Let’s make this absolute Hell for teams and press the whole pitch'. And it worked."

In the final against Eintracht Frankfurt in Seville, Amad was relegated to fourth-choice winger as Scott Wright began the game, Fashion Sakala replaced him and then Aaron Ramsey came on in the 117th minute ahead of the penalty shootout. Ramsey was the only player to miss from the spot as the Gers lost out.

Man Utd can get Zirkzee firing by appointing "supreme" Ten Hag replacement

Manchester United have been nothing short of appalling this season. Erik ten Hag’s side have won just four times, with two of those victories coming against the side who are second-bottom of the Premier League – Southampton – and League One side Barnsley in the Carabao Cup.

Unsurprisingly, Ten Hag’s position as Red Devils boss has come under question of late. His side are currently sitting in an astonishing 12th in the Premier League on just 11 points and a goal difference of minus two.

In the event Sir Jim Ratcliffe and his INEOS board decide to remove the Dutchman from his position, there have been several managers linked with the post at Old Trafford.

The managers who could replace Ten Hag

Perhaps the most obvious candidate for the United job if Ten Hag was to be sacked would be Ruud van Nistelrooy. The former United striker was brought back to the club by his country at the start of the season.

Given his experience as manager of PSV Eindhoven and his position as assistant manager at Old Trafford, he has been linked with the job in the event of the United hierarchy changing manager.

The man whom the Red Devils missed out on was former Chelsea and Bayern Munich manager Thomas Tuchel. The German was heavily linked with the post in the summer, and talks were believed to have taken place once again. However, the FA beat INEOS in the race, and Tuchel is now England’s boss.

Thomas Frank is another option that the United board are reportedly considering. He has done a superb job in charge of Brentford, both in the Premier League and Championship. His tactical flexibility is seen as a huge draw, and he recently said in a press conference that a new job might be the “challenge I need”. It is certainly something to keep an eye on.

There are certainly some viable options for the Red Devils, although there is one manager that could be good to turn down. That manager is Simone Inzgahi.

Why Inzaghi would be a good appointment

Inter boss Inzaghi has gone from strength to strength in Milan. According to multiple reports, including one from The Daily Star at the end of September, he is a ‘serious contender’ for the hot seat at Old Trafford.

Manchester United manager target Simone Inzaghi ahead of a Champions League game.

The Italian boasts a superb record at the helm of I Nerazzurri. So far during his time at the club, the 48-year-old has managed 169 games, getting 111 wins in that time, and suffering just 27 losses. It has been a very impressive tenure so far.

Inzaghi is a manager who favours a 3-5-2 system, placing great emphasis on his wingbacks to have a real licence to get forward and act as wingers when his side has the ball.

Playing this system, the Italian has masterminded some historic wins, although the best of the bunch may well have been the 5-1 victory over bitter rivals Milan.

Should the former attacker get the United job, United fans could finally see the best of striker Joshau Zirkzee. The Dutchman joined the club in the summer from Bologna for £36.5m, although he has just one goal to his name so far, a debut strike against Fulham.

United’s number 11 might well thrive under Inzaghi should he get the United job. The Dutchman, a self-professed 9.5, could excel in the Italian’s two-striker system. His game is built around dropping deep and linking up play, although that can leave the Red Devils short of a penalty box presence.

Manchester United's Joshua Zirkzee scores vs Fulham

However, playing in a two alongside the likes of Rasmus Hojlund, a more traditional striker who operates well inside the box, could see Zirkzee thrive. United get the best of both worlds, having one of the number nines dropping deep, pulling defenders with him to link up play and vacate space, whilst also having someone in the box to get on the end of chances.

That type of combination proved fruitful last term as Inter romped to the title, with Marcus Thuram and Lautaro Martinez scoring 37 Serie A goals between them as a fearsome front two at San Siro.

The Italian manager’s system could manage to extract the best out of the young striker, something Ten Hag simply has not managed to do so far. Playing in a front two alongside Hojlund certainly gets the best out of him on paper.

Inzaghi, described as a “supreme” boss by football scout Antonio Mango, could be the ideal candidate to replace Ten Hag.

Not only is he an excellent tactician and motivator, but his system might get the best out of United’s forwards in a season where they have scored just seven Premier League goals.

Namibia looking forward to 'facing the heat' of Pakistan, New Zealand and India

Coach Pierre de Bruyn calls Afghanistan defeat an “icebreaker” after winning run comes to abrupt end

Deivarayan Muthu31-Oct-2021After notching up three successive wins against Netherlands, Ireland and Scotland, Namibia couldn’t quite keep up with Afghanistan’s intensity on Sunday, losing by 62 runs. It is only going to get tougher for them as they next run into group-toppers Pakistan, followed by India and New Zealand, in three different venues across six days. Namibia’s head coach Pierre de Bruyn admitted as much after they were pinned down to 98 for 9 in a chase of 161 in Abu Dhabi.”We are definitely looking forward to them,” de Bruyn said at the post-match press conference. “We’re fully aware that it’s going to now get really tough. We just don’t want to be a team that’s just going to rock up and provide middle practice. We want to continue competing and we need to sharpen up our skills and we need to believe.Related

Afghan bowlers deliver another massive win to stay second on table

Asghar does his bit in emotional Afghanistan farewell

“Today was maybe an icebreaker for us as a team – experiencing this level of intensity. So, we haven’t got a long turnaround – one day of rest and training and then we’ve got to come and face the heat.”Namibia lost three wickets in the powerplay and the damage proved irreparable despite the injury-enforced absence of Mujeeb Ur Rahman in Afghanistan’s attack. Namibia’s top three – Craig Williams, Michael van Lingen and Nicol Loftie-Eaton – all fell swinging across the line, leaving de Bruyn rue their shot selection.”Yeah, it was always going to be difficult. You’re [up] against top players,” de Bruyn said. “We had a plan – we had a game-plan in how to approach that powerplay – it was all about no damage. The moment you lose four [three] wickets in a powerplay, you’re behind and if you look at our dismissals, every batter will go and say that they got themselves out. [There were] one or two good yorkers on the day that the batter can say ‘that was a good ball’. But we know we’ve been here long enough to know that on these wickets you’ve got to play straight and we’ve learnt some dear lessons.”Loftie-Eaton, though, had a good outing with the ball earlier in the afternoon. He got some balls to turn big and others to skid off the pitch, keeping the Afghanistan batters guessing. He was rewarded with the wickets of Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Najibullah Zadran – both trapped lbw. Curiously enough, the legspinner had bowled just one over in four matches prior to the Afghanistan fixture. de Bruyn revealed that an injury was limiting his bowling in this tournament.”It was about managing Nicol leading-up to game-time,” de Bruyn said. “He had a quad strain – tear two – so you know it was tough. He wasn’t ready on tour, so we need to get him bowling fit in the nets first and what he’s shown today is that he’s ready. I’m so pleased for him and that’s a huge positive for us. He’s a confident player, he’s a youngster, so that’s a very big positive for the bowling unit itself. I thought we executed good plans today. The moment we didn’t execute we were punished and I suppose those are good lessons.”de Bruyn also acknowledged Asghar Afghan’s contribution to the game after the 33-year old ended his career with 31 off 23 balls in a crucial victory for Afghanistan.”It’s inspiring everyone out there. He’s had a fantastic career,” de Bruyn said. “Am sure every cricketer in the world would like to finish his career on a high note like he’s done today. So, congratulations to him for what he’s done for cricket. For global cricket and especially for Afghanistan cricket.”

has reported that the Premier League champions are in talks with Porto over Nico after making a "formal approach" for the 23-year-old midfielder. The problem for City is that Porto don't want to lose a key player and will ask for an "important" transfer fee, or it's no deal. Nico has a €60 million (£50.2m/$62.3m) release clause, although matters are complicated by Porto owing former club Barcelona a 40% sell-on clause if he moves on.

Seemingly in response to a dreadful November and December and the clear need for fresh energy in the squad, City have had an unusually busy mid-season transfer window. Omar Marmoush has been the highest profile arrival for the best part of £60m ($74m) from Eintracht Frankfurt, but young centre-back trio Abdukodir Khusanov, Vitor Reis and Juma Bah have also been recruited this month. The January spending is already at £127m ($157m).

Nico is a product of Barcelona's La Masia conveyor belt, joining aged 11. After a sudden first-team breakthrough alongside Gavi in 2021-22, making 37 senior appearances across all competitions, it looked as though he might become a long-term part of the Barca squad. But a loan to Valencia followed the very next season, before a permanent Porto transfer for just €8.5m in 2023.

Arsenal promised a lot at the start of 2024-25, however, their fitness issues have now started hampering their hopes for silverware. Nonetheless, Red Devils legend Neville has now insisted that Arsenal deserve 'no sympathy' over their injury crisis as he tore down the Gunners' transfer strategy. The former full-back has claimed that Arsenal were aware of the potential of issues with squad depth but chose not to make a winter signing and hence deserve no commiserations.

WHAT NEVILLE SAID

Speaking on the , the United legend said: “They’re going to have to come up with something. Look, I said before the game [between Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United], I have got very little sympathy for Arsenal, they knew at the start of the season that they were short at centre-forward.

"They knew that they might be… you know, if [Kai] Havertz got injured and they knew were in a position where they didn’t have the quality up top so they’ve known about it. They’ve also had two title races so they know what it’s like. So, this is not like an inexperienced team anymore, this is not an inexperienced manager and it’s not an inexperienced situation for them to be in.

"So, I always say, ultimately, did you know that this could have happened before the start of the season? Yeah, could it have been foreseen? Yes, it could, we knew that Arsenal lack goals up top and a top centre-forward.

"I’m not saying they should go and desperately buy one but they knew in the January transfer window that there was an issue there, again, they couldn’t get any business done."
