McIlroy has become a superstar of the sport, however, the Northern Irishman has agonisingly missed out on one of golf's four most illustrious tournaments, The Masters. The 35-year-old went into Sunday with a two-stroke lead over Justin Rose, and despite the Englishman's comeback forcing a replay of a one-hole playoff on hole 18, McIlroy succeeded after sinking a four-foot putt to birdie to claim the trophy.

The 35-year-old achieved a career grand slam by winning all four majors in golf with his triumph at The Masters. McIlroy joins Gene Sarazen, Ben Hogan, Gary Player, Jack Nicklaus, and Tiger Woods as the only other players to achieve the feat. McIlroy, who is an ardent United fan, has now been congratulated by the Red Devils.

It is highly likely that McIlroy will be commemorated at Old Trafford sometime in the future for his Grand Slam, as has happened earlier in his career as well. However, Ruben Amorim's side will now be hoping that they can conjure up some sort of inspiration from McIlroy's victory as they look to make a strong end to a terrible season.

Chelsea now "ready" to move for club’s "key" £17m forward alongside Tel

Chelsea are very keen on potentially signing one club’s “key” forward, amid reliable reports that they’re pursuing a January deal for Bayern Munich forward Mathys Tel.

Chelsea hold talks over signing Bayern Munich forward Mathys Tel

On Monday evening, trusted transfer reporter Fabrizio Romano broke an exclusive report on X that Chelsea have held initial talks over signing Tel – where they asked to be kept informed on the Frenchman’s situation.

Talks opened as £38m Chelsea "leader" could now leave with Nkunku and Veiga

A plethora of exits are taking shape at Stamford Bridge.

ByEmilio Galantini Jan 14, 2025

Their fresh interest in Tel, coinciding with Bayern’s eagerness on a winter deal for Christopher Nkunku, has even prompted serious talk of a possible swap deal involving Chelsea’s wantaway winger.

Nkunku is said to have agreed terms on a move to Bayern and wishes to join them “right away” (Florian Plettenberg), and Vincent Kompany’s side have earmarked the 26-year-old as a top transfer target to get through the door before deadline day on February 3.

If a swap deal can’t be done, then Chelsea value Nkunku at around £59 million plus add-ons (Ben Jacobs), so it could be in Bayern’s best interest to try and facilitate a part-exchange bid involving Tel – even if Bavarian sporting director Christoph Freund is attempting to pour cold water over the 19-year-old’s potential exit.

“He is a very important player for us,” said Freund. “He’s a great talent. Our clear goal is for Mathys to make his breakthrough with us.

“We are very happy with our squad, both quality and quantity wise. Of course, if a player is unhappy, we can talk about it. But the clear plan with Mathys is for him to make his breakthrough here.”

In any case, initial discussions have taken place between Chelsea and Bayern over Tel, and it will be interesting to see whether Nkunku could be involved or if his transfer turns out to be a separate entity. It is also worth noting that Chelsea were reportedly holding talks over Tel as far back as last summer.

Chelsea "ready" to move for Deportivo winger Yeremay Hernandez

Amid Chelsea’s pursuit of Tel, a Spanish media source has shared more news on BlueCo’s chase for some of world football’s brightest young talents.

Indeed, it is believed that Chelsea are targeting Deportivo La Coruna forward Yeremay Hernandez, who has impressed for the La Liga 2 outfit with eight goals and three assists so far this campaign.

The Spain Under-21 international is a “key” player for them, but this report from the continent states that Chelsea are “ready to take” Hernandez from Deportivo after keeping a very close eye on his development in Europe.

The 22-year-old can play on both the right and left-hand side, with Deportivo not exactly demanding a marquee fee to let him go, despite Hernandez still having five years to run on his current contract. Chelsea, it is reported here, could even strike a deal for around £17 million.

India eye another series win as Zimbabwe hope for batting fixes

Fast-bowler friendly conditions are likely to persist in Harare in the second ODI of the three-match rubber

Sruthi Ravindranath19-Aug-2022Big pictureWe may continue to wonder whether ODIs are still relevant but Shikhar Dhawan clearly loves the format. He said so before the series. He reaffirmed his love by scoring an unbeaten 81 in the first ODI on Thursday, his third half-century in four matches over last month. “It is a balanced format where you should know when to attack and when to defend, for both batters and bowlers,” he had said. On the day, Dhawan and his opening partner Shubman Gill started off cautiously against the moving ball and later turned on attacking mode as they took on the chase. Of course, it wasn’t a tall total (189) but it was a clinical performance from India nonetheless. It was not just India’s batting that stood out. Deepak Chahar produced a superb spell of swing bowling to decimate the Zimbabwe top order on his comeback, while Prasidh Krishna and Axar Patel also chipped in with three apiece to dismantle the rest of the line-up. Gill opening the batting meant we couldn’t see much of the other returnee, captain KL Rahul. The win only further showcased India’s resources and depth in the format.Zimbabwe, however, were expected to perform a lot better. They came into the match with a resounding series win against Bangladesh and they were facing an opposition that wasn’t at full strength. Yet they still went down without putting up a fight. The only positive, apart from the decent opening spell by the quicks, was a brief counterattack from their ninth-wicket pair of Brad Evans and Richard Ngarava. This is also the fifth straight loss for them in a match that has Super League status. They will want more from their batting department, especially the likes of captain Regis Chakabva and Sikandar Raza – who was in splendid form in the series against Bangladesh. A comeback in this series will only give Zimbabwe confidence ahead of their ODI tour to Australia starting August 28.Form guideZimbabwe LLWWL (last five completed matches, most recent first)
India WWWWWIn the spotlightSean Williams, who has been Zimbabwe’s backbone in the batting order for many years, hasn’t been in form of late. His most recent scores read 1, 2, 8, 33 and 28. On Thursday, he played his first ODI since January this year, after missing the games against Afghanistan and Bangladesh for personal reasons. With regular captain Craig Ervine out of this series with injury, Zimbabwe will want Williams to go back to playing more patiently and anchor the innings to help them to competitive totals.Shubman Gill has been making a strong case to be India’s back-up opener for the foreseeable future, and possibly even at the 2023 ODI World Cup. His 82 off 72 balls against Zimbabwe followed scores of 64, 43 and 98 not out against West Indies and the fact that he continued to open even when Rahul was in the XI suggests that perhaps, when the time comes, India see him taking over the role on a more permanent basis.Likely XIsZimbabwe need a better performance from their top-order, but they are short of options. Even those on the bench right now – Milton Shumba and Takudzwanashe Kaitano – have struggled to make an impact.Zimbabwe (probable): 1 Tadiwanashe Marumani, 2 Innocent Kaia, 3 Sean Williams, 4 Wessly Madhevere, 5 Sikandar Raza, 6 Regis Chakabva (capt & wk), 7 Ryan Burl, 8 Luke Jongwe, 9 Bradley Evans, 10 Victor Nyauchi, 11 Richard NgaravaIndia are likely to go with the same XI, unless they want to give Ruturaj Gaikwad or Rahul Tripathi a chance.India (probable): 1 Shikhar Dhawan, 2 Shubman Gill, 3 Ishan Kishan, 4 KL Rahul (capt), 5 Deepak Hooda, 6 Sanju Samson (wk), 7 Axar Patel, 8 Deepak Chahar, 9 Kuldeep Yadav, 10 Prasidh Krishna, 11 Mohammed SirajPitch and conditionsThe conditions in the first ODI helped the fast bowlers, who found movement in the air and off the pitch with the new ball. Zimbabwe have lost their first wicket at an average of 8.42 runs across the seven ODIs in the current home season. The partnership of 25 in the first ODI against India was their highest opening stand in those seven matches. India’s bowling average in ODIs during the first ten overs this year is 24.32, their best in a calendar year since 2003 (23.68). This is a marked improvement from 2020 (169.33) and 2021 (95.00) when their first ten-overs average actually hit their lowest point since 2001.Quotes”I am enjoying batting with the youngster [Shubman Gill] and I feel like a youngster too. Vipers strike again as Emily Windsor seals another low-scorer

Lamb, Threlkeld fifties in vain for Thunder as hosts make it four from four

ECB Reporters Network11-Sep-2022Southern Vipers 204 for 6 (Windsor 59) beat Thunder 203 (Threlkeld 79, Lamb 63, Norris 3-42) by four wicketsEmily Windsor backed up her Hundred final heroics to guide Southern Vipers to a fifth straight Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy victory and guarantee a spot in the Playoff.Batter Windsor scored the winning runs at Lord’s last Saturday to give Oval Invincibles back-to-back titles, and at the Ageas Bowl against Thunder she carefully amassed 59 to set up a four-wicket victory.Thunder had set 203 mainly due to Emma Lamb and Ellie Threlkeld’s half-centuries after Tara Norris had ripped the top order apart with three quick wickets.Vipers stuttered themselves when they slumped to 29 for three but an 89-run stand for the sixth wicket between Windsor and Chloe Hill took the hosts towards the win with three overs to spare.Having been asked to bowl, Norris ripped through the Thunder top order in the first seven overs to reduce the visitors to 23 for three.Seren Smale suffered a golden duck when she was bowled between bat and pad, Laura Marshall was lbw trying to work to leg and former West Indies international Deandra Dottin was caught behind on the cut.Norris’ first five-over spell of three for 15 was all the more important with Vipers missing fast bowlers Freya Kemp and Lauren Bell to England and Anya Shrubsole to injury. Georgia Elwiss damaging her back during her three overs didn’t help matters.Lamb and Threlkeld, who both took their Trophy tally over 200 runs, recovered the situation with a hard-working 119-run stand for the fourth wicket.Over half of Lamb’s 63 runs came in singles, although broke the mould by lobbing a six down the ground, as she played the role of glue while Threlkeld was able to pepper the leg-side boundary. They both brought up their fifties in quick succession – Lamb first in 70 balls for her third half-century of the tournament, and Threlkeld in 55 deliveries.Their partnership was the only one of note, as the next highest scorer was Daisy Mullen with 13.Paige Scholfield ended it by finding Lamb tossing to mid-on before trapping Shachi Pai next ball. There was to be no hat trick but Vipers were back in control and would polish off the innings with nine balls to spare.Lauren Heap was stumped, Threlkeld picked out long-on, Mullan was run out after good work from Alice Monaghan, Laura Jackson was caught and bowled by Charlie Dean and Phoebe Graham skewed to point.Vipers had found themselves 38 for five in their previous match here, against Sunrisers, before recovering to victory, so 29 for three was an improvement.Ella McCaughan drove to point with a lack of footwork her downfall, Elwiss skied an attempted pull shot behind and Dean, promoted to open, was bowled by the accurate Jackson.Georgia Adams had pointed her side in the right direction with 20, during a 42-run stand with Scholfield, before holing out to deep midwicket before Scholfield was lbw to Pai soon after to leave Vipers 100 for five just over the halfway point. But Windsor, who also scored the winning runs in last year’s Rachael Heyhoe Flint Trophy final, kept her calm and reached 60-ball fifty, with an advance to dispatch down the ground her most eye-catching moment.Hill, who had saved Vipers against Sunrisers, accompanied her well with an unbeaten 43. Despite Windsor falling with 15 runs still to get, Norris’ 12 not out eased any nerves.

Dele 2.0: Spurs plot move to sign an exciting "future Ballon d’Or winner"

Tottenham Hotspur’s season has been a bit of a disaster this year, but there are reasons to be hopeful for the future.

Daniel Levy and Co may not have bought enough ready-made players for Ange Postecoglou over the summer, but they did sign a number of up-and-coming prospects.

The likes of Archie Gray, Lucas Bergvall and their very own Mikey Moore look like they could develop into sensational players together at Spurs.

Fortunately, recent reports have now linked a slightly older but still developing talent for a move to the club this month, a tremendously exciting attacker who shares a lot of similarities with Dele Alli.

Tottenham target incredible phenom

According to a recent report from Caught Offside, Tottenham are one of multiple clubs ‘monitoring Rayan Cherki’s situation at Lyon.’

Rayan Cherki in action for Lyon

Alongside the Lilywhites, the report has revealed that Manchester United, Liverpool, Bayern Munich, Paris Saint-Germain, Bayer Leverkusen and Atalanta are all interested in the sensational French talent. Spurs are perhaps one of the most interested parties with GIVEMESPORT further reporting that they are ‘tempted’ to make an offer to get him out of France.

However, while the competition could be a challenge for Spurs to overcome, the price might not be as, according to the story, the Ligue 1 side are only after about €22m for the 21-year-old, which is about £18m and has been described as an “absolute bargain” by “many executives,” per Sky Sports Germany reporter Florian Plettenberg.

Olympique Lyonnais' RayanCherkiin action with Fenerbahce's Dusan Tadic and Fenerbahce's Sebastian Szymanski

It looks like it could be an incredibly complicated deal to get over the line given the amount of competition, but with how unbelievably talented Cherki is, it’s a deal Spurs must fight for, especially as there are some similarities between him and Dele.

How Cherki compares to Dele and why Spurs should sign him

Okay, so before we go into some of the reasons why Spurs should be doing all they can to sign Cherki this month, let’s examine some of the ways in which he’s similar to the player Dele was in his pomp.

The first and most significant is that, like the former England star was when he was a youngster, the Lyon ace has been winning rave reviews for his sublime skills for years now.

For example, just a couple of years ago, The Athletic’s Alex Barker described the Frenchman as “a future Ballon d’Or winner,” while talent scout Jacek Kulig dubbed him a “world-class talent.”

On top of that, Ted Knutson, the founder of Statsbomb, described the Lyon phenom as “a masterful dribbler and string-puller” just a couple of weeks ago, and while Dele wasn’t necessarily the exact same type of player, he too won a mountain of plaudits when he was coming through.

For example, even as his powers started to fade in 2019, then-Spurs boss José Mourinho answered that “he can do anything he wants” to a reporter’s question on his chances of winning the Ballon d’Or in the future.

Moreover, when he was scoring for fun and running games as a youngster, the Milton Keynes-born superstar was included among the likes of Kevin De Bruyne, Eden Hazard, Neymar Jr and others in a BBC article about players who could become contenders for the prestigious award once Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo stopped winning it.

With all that said, another significant indicator the Lilywhites should be doing all they can to sign the Pusignan-born gem this month is his outrageous underlying numbers.

According to FBref, which compares players in similar positions in Europe’s top five leagues, the Champions League and the Europa League, the 21-year-old sits in the top 1% of attacking midfielders and wingers for expected assisted goals, shot-creating actions, progressive passes and successful take-ons, the top 2% for actual assists, the top 4% for attempted passes, the top 7% for touches in the opposition’s penalty area and more, all per 90.

Ultimately, if Spurs are looking to build a team of young talents who can grow together and challenge for major honours a few years from now, then we aren’t sure there are many better options on the market than Cherki.

Lyon star Rayan Cherki

Therefore, Levy and Co should do all they can to bring him to N17 as soon as possible, as they would have another Dele-level talent on their hands for a relatively small fee.

Babar: Middle-order batters' form in New Zealand 'good signs' for T20 World Cup

Pakistan captain excited about his team’s chances in Australia, especially with Haris Rauf in good form and Shaheen Afridi set to come back

Babar: ‘Middle order stepping up just before World Cup has given us confidence’

Two weeks ago, within hours of finishing a T20I series against England at home, Babar Azam and the other Pakistan players flew out to New Zealand for the last leg of their 2022 men’s T20 World Cup preparation. On Friday, within hours of winning the tri-series final in Christchurch, they were on the flight to Melbourne for the World Cup.Related

Pakistan takeaways: Batting headaches and WC quandaries

It’s been all rush-rush, but familiarity with conditions, at least as far as surfaces go, should help. “It will make a difference, no doubt,” Babar said at a pre-World Cup press interaction. “The way we played the triangular series in New Zealand, it has helped a lot. The boys are confident, and we will try to carry the momentum into the World Cup.”In Christchurch, they beat Bangladesh twice, and won one and lost one to New Zealand in the league phase, before winning the final. An upswing from the 4-3 series defeat to England.Babar is particularly pleased that Pakistan’s middle-order batters, who have been under scrutiny, are starting to step up. On Friday, victory was sealed by Mohammad Nawaz, Haider Ali and Iftikhar Ahmed after the top three wobbled and Pakistan needed 67 in the last six overs.

“We have six days before the first game and two practice games, we will utilise the two practice games and make sure that Shaheen, especially the way he has come back, he is fully fit and fully dedicated to play”

Nawaz was particularly impressive, ending the series with knocks of 38* and 45* after a slightly lacklustre run with the bat against England at home. He has been backed because of his ability to play the role of a floater, something he did superbly in Pakistan’s Super 4s win over India at the Asia Cup in Dubai, when he made a 20-ball 42 to turn around a steep chase.”The middle order has stepped up in the last two matches,” Babar agreed. “When you get such performances right before the World Cup, you gain a lot of confidence as a team, and I believe our middle order will perform. We are backing them. The way Ifti [Iftikhar] and especially Nawaz, and before that Shadab [Khan] played, the middle order is chipping in. And these are good signs for us before the World Cup.”Babar was also effusive in his praise for Pakistan’s fast-bowling group, especially Haris Rauf, whose return to Australia is in many ways the competition of a circle. It is here that Rauf first made a name for himself in grade cricket before replacing his hero, Dale Steyn, at Melbourne Stars in the BBL in the 2019-20 season. He ended the tournament with 20 wickets, including a hat-trick, impressing with his 140kph-plus thunderbolts and slower deliveries alike.Haris Rauf remains a key component in the Pakistan bowling unit•Getty ImagesHaris hasn’t looked back since, emerging as one of the key men in Pakistan’s attack alongside Naseem Shah and Shaheen Shah Afridi.”Our fast-bowling lot is very strong, and it will even be strengthened with Shaheen’s return [from a knee injury],” Babar said. “Our bench strength has been bowling well. We have bowled with different combinations over the last few matches, and they have performed.”The way Haris has improved his bowling day-by-day in the death and with the new ball… it is an opportunity for the fast bowlers to show that we have skills and have different players for different combinations.”Babar also expressed hope that Afridi would make a seamless comeback after a layoff since mid-July. Having first undergone on-tour rehabilitation in the Netherlands in August, he flew with the team to the Asia Cup in Dubai before flying to the UK to meet specialists. He’s now back with the group in Australia and looks set to play the tournament opener against India, on October 23 in Melbourne.”We have six days before the first game and two practice games, we will utilise the two practice games and make sure that Shaheen, especially the way he has come back, he is fully fit and fully dedicated to play,” Babar said. “He gives his 100% effort every time, and looking forward to see him play.”

However, the same cannot be said for injured starlet Roméo Lavia, who still has a “long way to go” before he’s back on the field, according to Maresca.

Chelsea’s face-off with Fabian Hurzeler’s side may even give Mathis Amougou a chance to make his full debut for the west Londoners, after he arrived in a £12 million deal from Saint-Étienne on the winter transfer window’s final day.

The 19-year-old, as confirmed by Fabrizio Romano, will be used as a senior player this season before heading out on loan to Strasbourg for the 2025/2026 season.

Amougou joins Trevoh Chalobah as two of Chelsea’s only January arrivals. The club activated their re-call clause for the latter player, who returns to Stamford Bridge to bolster Maresca’s centre-back options.

Chelsea ultimately decided to bring Chalobah back instead of making a mid-season move for his Crystal Palace teammate, Marc Guehi.

Chelsea convinced Marc Guehi will choose to join them this summer

Maresca’s side were widely rumoured to hold a serious interest in the centre-back, who was subject to a last-gasp £70 million bid from Tottenham.

Spurs ultimately fell short in their pursuit of the England international who starred at Euro 2024, with some reports stating that Guehi actually commands a price tag of “£80 million-plus”.

Now, according to GiveMeSport, Chelsea are convinced that Guehi will choose to join them over Tottenham this summer, after tentatively reaching out to his representatives during the winter transfer window.

The 24-year-old’s price tag may well come down by the end of the season, given he’ll be entering the final year of his Selhurst Park contract. A swoop for the former Chelsea gem would boost Maresca’s defensive options to no end, with some even calling Guehi the Premier League’s “most underrated” player.

While Milan players enjoy lucrative salaries at the San Siro, led by Rafael Leao, they still trail behind the league's top earners. Not a single Milan player makes it to the highest-paid list, unlike their fierce competitors Juventus and Inter, who boast players with significantly higher earnings.

Italian midfielder Nicolo Barella ranks fourth, while Hakan Calhanoglu completes the top five.

AFPHighest paid players in the world

Serie A players, despite their high earnings, are not among the top five highest-paid footballers globally.

The top five are all from the Saudi Pro League, with Cristiano Ronaldo at Al Nassr earning the most.

Karim Benzema, formerly of Real Madrid, is second, and Riyad Mahrez, now with Al-Ahli, is third.

Sadio Mane and Kalidou Koulibaly, both from Senegal, are fourth and fifth, respectively.
