He earns as much as Raskin: Thelwell must sell "blistering" Rangers flop

Glasgow Rangers will be going in search of their first win of the 2025/26 Scottish Premiership season when they welcome Hearts to Ibrox on Saturday.

The Light Blues have drawn all four of their games in the division so far, the latest being the 0-0 draw with Celtic last time out, and need to get three points on the board this weekend.

Russell Martin has confirmed, though, that Nicolas Raskin will not play any part of the clash with the Jam Tarts, after he was also left out of the squad to face Celtic before the international break.

The manager explained: “Every player has a duty to earn the trust of his team-mates and coaching staff to help us win football matches. We have to be on the pitch with trust and feeling and clarity and that’s it. I think the most important thing is Nico knows why, the players know why and we all move forward.

“He’s part of the squad in training and he needs to help that and put himself back in the squad to help us win matches. It is resolved he is still here, he is training with the group now, so it’s fine.”

Supporters will surely be hoping that the Belgian talent is back on the pitch for Rangers sooner rather than later, because he has the quality to be an influential figure for the team.

Why Rangers need Nicolas Raskin back on the pitch

The Light Blues need Raskin on the pitch because he is a central midfielder who provides qualities in and out of possession as a box-to-box star.

His attributes on and off the ball mean that he can influence games at both ends of the pitch, by breaking up opposition attacks and by making an impact in the final third.

Defensively, Raskin has shown that he can provide a combative presence in the middle of the park by making tackles, interceptions, and ball recoveries on a regular basis, domestically and in Europe.

As you can see in the table above, the Belgium international won the majority of his duels on the ground and in the air in the 2024/25 campaign, whilst making plenty of defensive interventions each game.

These statistics show that he can break up play ahead of the back four to protect the defence and Jack Butland, which is something that is needed right now after 17 goals conceded so far this season.

Raskin’s form in the 2024/25 campaign also shows that he has the quality to provide a big threat in possession as both a scorer and a creator of goals, to go along with his defensive efforts.

The Belgian star delivered five goals and 11 assists in all competitions, per Transfermarkt, and could provide the creativity that Rangers lacked against Celtic, as they failed to create any ‘big chances’.

Wage Burners

Football FanCast’s Wage Burners series explores the salaries of the modern-day game.

Whilst these statistics explain why Rangers need Raskin back in the first-team squad for matches, there is another Light Blues outcast who should be moved on by sporting director Kevin Thelwell.

Rabbi Matondo did not complete a move away from Ibrox before the end of the Scottish summer transfer window, but Thelwell must find a way to finally move on from the winger, whether that is now or in the January transfer window at the start of next year.

Why Rangers need to move on from Rabbi Matondo

Raskin and Matondo both reportedly earn £15k-per-week at Rangers, but the club have not been getting equal value out of them on the pitch in recent seasons.

In fact, the Wales international spent the 2024/25 campaign out on loan at Hannover in the 2. Bundesliga because Philippe Clement decided that he was not going to make his first-team squad.

Rangers, who signed the forward from Schalke for a fee of £2.5m in the summer of the 2022, need to finally part ways with the attacker because he has not done enough on the pitch since his move to Ibrox.

Matondo has had his moments for the Gers, including the goal against Celtic in the clip above, but he has only scored eight goals in all competitions for the first-team in the last three years.

As well as struggling for consistency on the pitch, the former Manchester City youngster has also struggled to stay fit throughout his time at Ibrox, and on loan in Germany last term.

As you can see in the table above, the 25-year-old winger has not been reliable enough with his availability in recent seasons, already missing three games at the start of the current campaign.

Matondo, who Kris Boyd claimed has “blistering pace”, cannot be relied upon by Martin because of these consistent injury issues, which is why the manager should not look to reintegrate him into the team.

The Welsh international should, instead, be moved on by Thelwell, whether that is to a club whose window remains open now or to a team in January, because of his performance and injury issues.

Matondo has only scored seven goals in 44 matches in the Scottish Premiership for Rangers in his career, per Transfermarkt, and this shows that he has not been an elite talent for the team even when he has been fit.

The wide player’s underwhelming contributions in the final third and his injury problems suggest that the Gers have not got as much out of their £15k-per-week than they have for Raskin, who won the club’s Player of the Season and Players’ Player of the Season awards for the 2024/25 campaign.

Rangers must regret losing the "Mbappe of Scottish football" for nothing

It is now down to the club, Martin, and Thelwell to find a solution for Matondo in the coming weeks or months, because, to this point, he has been a flop at Ibrox.

Florian Wirtz putting in the hard yards! How Liverpool man is trying to kickstart Reds career on Germany duty after slow start following blockbuster £116m transfer

Florian Wirtz is putting in the hard yards as he is doing extra training for Germany in a bid to kickstart his Liverpool career after a slow start to life at Anfield. Since completing a whopping £116 million ($156m) transfer from Bayer Leverkusen in the summer, Wirtz has struggled to adjust to his new surroundings and has not had a single goal involvement in the Premier League.

The Germany national team, including Wirtz, trained together for the first time in the October international break on Tuesday. After the training session concluded, Wirtz was seen putting in extra shifts to work on his finishing and pick up his form, according to .

RB Leipzig and Germany left-back David Raum confirmed that Wirtz worked outside the training session, as he said: "The boy is hard-working and shows energy on and off the pitch. He was once again one of the longest players on the pitch today. We believe in the boy, we're building him up here. But he knows what he's capable of."

Slow start to life in England

Wirtz hasn’t been able to replicate the scintillating form that earned him Germany’s Footballer of the Year award in 2025. In his first seven Premier League appearances, the 22-year-old has yet to score or provide an assist – a stark contrast to his 31 goal contributions (16 goals, 15 assists) for Leverkusen in the 2024-25 campaign. The midfielder was even benched in Liverpool's last Premier League clash against Chelsea, as the Reds suffered their second consecutive Premier League defeat and third in all competitions.

Spinners' resurgence in IPL 2025: Lengths and speeds the key, says Chawla

There’s also the heat factor; the pitches are drier than usual because of the rising temperatures across the country, Piyush Chawla says

ESPNcricinfo staff04-May-20253:50

Why have spinners done better this season?

Spin has had a bigger say in IPL 2025 than it did in IPL 2024.After 50 matches this season, they had 220 wickets at an average of 30.02. At the same stage last season, they had taken 154 wickets at an average of almost 37. Overall, they had taken 39% of all bowler wickets by the 50th game, compared to 27% last year. Why, though?Piyush Chawla, still the third-highest wicket-taker in IPL history (192, behind Yuzvendra Chahal and Bhuvneshwar Kumar), feels it has to do with the heat around India to a large extent.Related

“Any bowler wants to bowl with the dry ball. And you can’t really predict where it’s going to be [dewy or otherwise] and where it’s not going to be,” he said on ESPNcricinfo’s Time Out show. “If you see the weather also this year, generally… I’m coming from Delhi, and in February you don’t have your fans on; but this year, your fans were on in February. That means it’s getting hotter and Delhi is already touching almost 45 degrees (Celsius).”So all the venues where it’s hot, the pitches are dry. No matter how much you roll it, how much you water it, eventually it gets dry, and it helps the spinners.”It might not only be about the conditions. Like everyone else in the circuit, spinners have also done their thinking, their research, and brought about tweaks.”If you see the spinners here, they are actually pulling their lengths back, rather than going too full, because now most of the batters don’t use their feet, except a few,” Chawla said. “So they [the batters] just wait for the ball to pitch up in their area, and sometimes when they don’t get a couple of sixes in two or three overs, even the ball that is not there to be hit, they go for it. And in that situation, they end up mistiming it.”As elaborated on ESPNcricinfo by S Rajesh, the change is most evident in the middle overs. This season, spinners have 44 more wickets in the middle overs after 50 matches compared to last year, and have bowled more than 61% of the overs in that phase. In IPL 2024, quick bowlers took 138 wickets in the middle overs compared to 127 for spinners, but the numbers have been flipped in 2025: spinners have taken 171 and quick bowlers 106.

“Shreyas Iyer is one example, who has got good reach, so even if the ball is a little further away from him, he can still manage. But most of the batters, they don’t get that kind of power behind [their shots from such positions]. The spinners have become smarter the way they have started pulling their lengths [back] and the pace also,” Chawla said. “Pace is playing a big role here. Because they are pulling their lengths back, you don’t want somebody to go on the back foot and pull you through midwicket and square leg. So you want to make sure you are bowling somewhere around 90-odd (kph), so even if they go on the back foot, they just have to nudge it around for one or two. That’s playing a big role.”Not to forget the Impact Player rule. The swap is typically between a batter and a fast bowler, in whatever order, but Chawla wants spinners to be given a go in the powerplay, more than we have seen them in that phase so far.”Because you have the extra option of a fast bowler with the Impact Sub and then there are a lot of players who… if there is one Indian who is opening the innings, as a captain they think that they play spinners really well and then spinners can go for plenty,” Chawla said. “And if you really want to bowl a spinner, you have to have that kind of experience to bowl in the powerplay, because it’s not an easy job to do. Or the first or second over, because that is, I feel, in T20 cricket the easiest overs to bowl. You can use your spinner there.”

Wolves now ready to make January offer for £103k-a-week Aston Villa target

Wolverhampton Wanderers are now ready to make a January offer for a midfield “artist”, who is also being targeted by Premier League rivals Aston Villa.

Wolves still not off the mark in the Premier League

It has been a torrid start to the Premier League season for Wolves, who remained bottom of the table after a very disappointing 3-1 home defeat against newly-promoted Leeds United last weekend.

Vitor Pereira’s side are the only top flight club yet to pick up a single point this season, but there has been some respite in the EFL Cup, having reached the fourth round, after progressing past West Ham United and, most recently, Everton.

Wolves star Munetsi reveals what they "really" worked on in training before Everton win

Wolves dominated the Toffees on Tuesday evening…

ByBen Goodwin Sep 24, 2025

There were some promising signs on Wednesday night, with the Old Gold defeating the Toffees 2-0 at Molineux, courtesy of goals from Marshall Munetsi and Tolu Arokodare, and the manager remains confident his players have the ability to turn things around.

Pereira said: “The work I watch everyday in training is hard work and this is a group who work a lot, they compete and want to be at a better level. We’re just missing the results because the players have quality.”

If things do not improve, however, and their Premier League status is on the line, Wolves may have to inject some fresh quality into the squad during the January transfer window, and they are now looking to sign Juventus midfielder Manuel Locatelli.

That is according to a report from Italy (via Sport Witness), which states the Old Gold are now ready to make an offer for Locatelli as soon as January, although there will be competition from some of their Premier League rivals.

West Ham United and Aston Villa are also prepared to make bids of their own, and there are signs a deal could be possible, with the Serie A side considering sanctioning a departure, although it is unclear what sort of fee they would be looking for.

"Artist" Locatelli could play major role in Wolves securing survival

Even though we are just five games into the new Premier League season, it is already starting to look like Wolves’ main goal this season will be to simply avoid the drop, and the £103k-a-week Juventus maestro could take Pereira’s midfield to the next level.

An established Italy international, with 32 caps to his name, the 27-year-old has plenty of top-level experience, having made 22 Champions League appearances, and he is very highly rated by scout Ben Mattinson.

Not only is the midfielder comfortable in possession, but he is also solid defensively, as shown by his performance in some key statistics over the past year.

Locatelli could be an excellent signing for Wolves, but it is questionable whether a player of his quality would be interested in moving to a relegation-threatened side.

Not Mosquera: Arsenal have signed a Gabriel & Saliba hybrid in £45m "beast"

Mikel Arteta has overseen a complete transformation of Arsenal since taking the job over five years ago.

The Spaniard has changed the North Londoners from a mid-table side spiralling out of relevance, into a lean, mean, winning machine that feels so close to finally getting over the line in a major competition.

A significant reason for this comprehensive transformation is the club’s out-of-this-world defence, which is anchored by arguably the best centre-back partnership in the Premier League, if not Europe: William Saliba and Gabriel Magalhães.

The duo are the perfect combination of elegance on the ball and tenacity off of it, and it now looks like Arteta has picked up a player who is a hybrid of both, and no, it’s not Cristhian Mosquera.

What makes Saliba & Gabriel such a brilliant duo

Now, while both of them can do a bit of everything at the back, it would be fair to say, at least in the minds of most fans and pundits, Saliba and Gabriel have complementary skill sets.

For example, when it comes to the Frenchman, sure, he can tough it out with any attacker who comes his way, but at his very best, the 24-year-old is a smooth operator.

He’s someone who can time a tackle to perfection; someone who can bait the opposition’s press just to pass the ball around them, and he can ping a ball into the frontline for a classic route-one goal if needs be.

There is a reason so many people, including his defensive partner, refer to him as a “Rolls-Royce” of a defender, and the fact that FBref rank him in the top 1% of centre-backs in Europe’s top five leagues for pass completion only reinforces such an idea.

So, with that said, what makes Gabriel such an incredible stalwart in Arteta’s defence?

Well, it should be said that, like the Frenchman, he too is no slouch when it comes to on-the-ball excellence, and he knows how to time a tackle.

However, what the Brazilian really brings to the table is his dogged tenacity, unwillingness to ever give up and a monstrous towering presence that is often enough to put attackers off on its own.

More than that, though, the former LOSC Lille ace is also a leader; he’s someone who’s gone through his own issues at the club and come through the other side so much stronger. He also really gets what it means to wear the badge.

This was on show in the game against Newcastle, as, despite getting it wrong for the opening goal, he rallied and put in a masterful defensive display afterwards, making 11 clearances, blocking two shots, making three interceptions, and then putting in three tackles to boot.

Finally, and this is a hugely important attribute in this team, which was also on show at St James’ Park: he’s a goal threat.

It was the “colossal” titan, as dubbed by Statman Dave, who headed home the late winner on Sunday, and despite being what many would consider a rather old-school centre-back, it was just one of many goals he’s scored for the club.

In total, the São Paulo-born superstar has scored 21 goals for the club in 218 appearances and provided five assists for good measure.

In all, it’s hard to think of a better centre-back partnership in world football than Saliba and Gabriel’s, so it’s great news that Arsenal have signed someone who’s a hybrid of both.

The Arsenal star who is a Saliba & Gabriel hybrid

Now, Mosquera has undoubtedly had a brilliant start to life at Arsenal this season, and looks like he could go on to be a star.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast’s Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

However, from what we’ve seen of the silky Spaniard thus far, it feels like he’s far more in the mould solely of Saliba rather than a hybrid of the Gunners’ two defensive stalwarts, unlike Piero Hincapié, who signed on a season-long loan with a £45m option to buy in the summer.

Starting with the former, then, one of the key similarities he shares with the former Saint-Etiene gem is his passing mastery and comfort level on the ball.

For example, according to FBref, he ranks in the top 1% of centre-backs in Europe’s top five leagues for non-penalty expected goals plus assists, the top 2% for crosses into the penalty area, the top 4% for key passes, the top 7% for passes into the penalty area and more, all per 90.

While these numbers do paint the picture of someone slightly more attacking than the Gunners’ number two, it also shows that he’s as comfortable with the ball at his feet.

Moreover, it’s not just the ease with which he passes the ball, but also the fact that he’s clearly been entrusted to make progressive and aggressive passes by managers, which shows an immense level of trust from them in the international ace.

What about Gabriel, then? What parts of his game does the Ecuadorian share with Arsenal’s Brazilian wall?

Well, while it’s far harder to quantify the similarities he shares with Saliba, the former Leverkusen star appears to be as much of a fighter as the 27-year-old.

For example, U23 scout Antonio Manfo has described him as “an absolute beast”, and his agent has gone further than that, calling him “a warrior” and “a leader.”

Finally, while no defender is as dangerous as Gabriel in the penalty area, the Esmeraldas-born titan can chip in when it comes to the attacking side of the game, as he scored two goals and provided two assists in just 32 league games last season.

Ultimately, while he’s unlikely to reach the incredible heights of Saliba or Ganriel, Arsenal look like they have got their hands on another defensive star in Hincapié, and the sooner he’s back to full fitness, the better.

Kent fold on fourth morning as Derbyshire maintain top-two form

Luis Reece claims 3 for 21 to help wrap up comprehensive innings victory for home side

ECB Reporters Network supported by Rothesay26-May-2025Luis Reece led Derbyshire’s victory charge as they rolled over Kent before lunch on the final day of the Rothesay County Championship Division Two match at Derby. The allrounder picked up two wickets to claim outstanding figures of 3 for 21 from 10 overs with Derbyshire beating the visitors by an innings and 14 runsAfter Zak Chappell struck with the first ball of the day, Kent folded in feeble fashion, losing four wickets in eight overs, to slump to 247 for 9, the injured Jake Ball unable to bat.It was Derbyshire’s second win of the season which takes them above Glamorgan to second in the table while Kent have now lost four matches in a row.Kent’s slide to another defeat started when Tawanda Muyeye was caught behind taking on a short ball from Chappell. Muyeye clearly thought it had come off his shoulder but given his side were still 104 runs behind with three wickets already down, it was not a great shot for the situation. That was a straightforward catch for Brooke Guest but the wicketkeeper took a much sharper one five overs later standing up to Luis Reece when Chris Benjamin pushed forward and edged into his gloves.Kent’s hopes of at least frustrating Derbyshire now rested with Jack Leaning and Harry Finch but the pair were quickly parted with Reece celebrating a second success of the morning. Leaning failed to get over a drive and substitute fielder Nick Potts took a good tumbling catch diving forward at deep mid-off.Derbyshire were now all over the visitors and in the next over, Finch went to turn Anuj Dal off his legs but the ball came off his thigh pad and onto the stumps.Matt Parkinson had resisted well as nightwatcher in the first innings but this time he lasted only seven balls before he went half forward to Jack Morley and was lbw. Grant Stewart struck some muscular blows , pulling Pat Brown for six, but the end came 15 minutes before the interval when he sliced the fast bowler to third man where Potts pulled off a superb diving catch.

'There is a risk' – Ryan Reynolds and Rob Mac warned of major problem to Wrexham owners' Premier League dream

Wrexham owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob Mac have been warned that, despite their rapid rise up the leagues, there is a risk the club may be growing too fast. The Hollywood stars have seen the club go from the National League all the way into the Championship and have made no secret of the fact they would love to watch their team in the Premier League in the future. However, the duo have been warned the club must keep pace financially and there is one major factor holding the Welsh side back currently.

Wrexham dreaming of Premier League

After overseeing back-to-back-to-back promotions, Wrexham find themselves just one rung below the Premier League in the Championship. Mac has said publicly that getting Wrexham into the English top flight has "always been our goal" while also admitting the prospect is "exciting and terrifying." Meanwhile, former Wrexham goalkeeper Ben Foster has claimed the Welsh side could make it into the promised land of the Premier League "within five years." However, Wrexham must first find a way out of the Championship and currently sit down in 18th place in the table, already nine points behind leaders Coventry, after just nine games played.

AdvertisementGettyWarning sent to Wrexham owners

While Reynolds and Mac continue to dream of seeing Wrexham playing the likes of Liverpool, Arsenal and Manchester United in the Premier League they have been offered a reality check. Former Liverpool chief executive officer Peter Moore, who provides strategic guidance to the Wrexham board, told the World Football Summit in Madrid that Wrexham's rapid rise does bring issues. He said: "There is a risk [of growing too fast at Wrexham] in that you have to keep up financially and the stadium is too small. If you're going to keep up economically, your gameday revenues are critical and a 12,000 capacity doesn't cut it."

Wrexham have big stadium plans

Wrexham's stadium currently has a capacity of just 10,500, making it the smallest ground in the Championship for the 2025-26 season. Yet the club do have big plans to renovate and increase capacity. A new all-seater Kop stand will see the SToK Cae Ras expand and be able to accommodate just over 18,000 fans. Wrexham's plan for their home ground is is for the club to be able to also host international and high-profile fixtures, potentially even including Women's World Cup 2035 games. A capacity of 18,000 would not only increase revenue for Wrexham but would make their home ground bigger than both Premier League sides Brentford and Bournemouth.

High hopes for new Kop stand

Wrexham chief executive Michael Williamson has spoken about the plans for the new Kop stand and hopes it will become an "iconic landmark." He told the club's website of how important the development will be for Wrexham: "The new Kop Stand marks a special moment in the history of the SToK Cae Ras, allowing us to restore the traditional four-sided enclosure of the stadium, providing new and improved facilities and experiences for our fans and visitors to the stadium alike. It will provide an iconic landmark standing at the gateway to the city giving it a true sense of place. The upgrading of facilities to meet UEFA Category 4 specifications are central to our wider vision of bringing international sport back to Wrexham and the benefit this will bring to the local community of hosting these events in North Wales."

Wrexham hope the new Kop stand will be ready by summer 2026.

India to make the Bumrah call 'at the very last minute'

They are all but certain to play two spinners; the second spinner could be Washington to provide the batting depth

Jasprit Bumrah is fit and available for the second Test against England, but India are not giving away whether he will play at Edgbaston, given he is likely to feature in only three of the five fixtures in the series.India are also all but certain to play two spinners at Edgbaston, given the patchy grass on the pitch, which is dry underneath. The second spinner, though, could be offspin allrounder Washington Sundar as India seem worried about batting depth.”Bumrah is ready to play,” India’s assistant coach Ryan ten Doeschate said two days before the Edgbaston Test. “It’s how we manage these four Tests. So if we feel like there’s value in playing him in this Test, we’ll make that call at the very last minute. I’m talking about weather, how the pitch is going to play, are we better off holding him back for Lord’s and maybe Manchester or The Oval? So it’s all those factors, but you’ve seen him train yesterday, he trained a little bit today. It’s not like he’s not fit to play. It’s just trying to fit those puzzle pieces to get the most out of what we know we do have from him.”The weather forecasts in England are best not taken as gospel, but there is rain predicted on days one, four and five. There is a chance, given the flat nature of pitches in England of late, that the weather might not leave the teams enough time for a result. Keeping that in mind, India could be thinking of preserving Bumrah for later in the series.Related

They also believe the dry nature of the pitch brings their slower bowlers into play. “It’s just which two we play,” ten Doeschate said. “And that goes back to juggling the batting depth. All three spinners are bowling very nicely. Washi is batting very nicely. So it’s just which combination do we go with? The allrounder-spinner or the out-and-out spinner? And obviously you have to play the bowling allrounder again.”So there are so many different variables. The wicket has got 11 mils [mm of grass] at the moment, 11 or 12, I can’t remember which of the two, but it’s quite grassy and patchy. It’s quite dry underneath, but there’s also rain forecast for Wednesday, so again trying to weigh up the two options of how we want to go attack-wise, but I’m pretty sure two spinners will play in this Test.”Washington Sundar could be the second spinner•AFP/Getty ImagesAt the start of the series, captain Shubman Gill had said he was prepared to play four tailenders to go for 20 wickets as cheaply as possible, but ten Doeschate seemed to suggest that was easier said than done. When asked how seriously they considered that option, given the struggles with team balance since the start of the Australia tour, ten Doeschate said: “We have [discussed playing four tailenders]. And when you’re 430 for 3, it’s absolutely fine, but when you’re 200 for 5, it’s a very different ball game.”So, in terms of managing the strategy there, we’re looking at each bowler individually, what we feel they can get wickets wise, and then it’s just trying to balance up and trying to calculate as best you can what the best chance of getting into the Test match, but you need 20 wickets. So the attacking part is obviously finding someone who can get wickets as well, and we are grappling with that. We don’t stop talking about that. We’re trying to figure it out.”Reddy ‘very close to getting a game’After Yashasvi Jaiswal dropped three catches at Headingley, India rejigged their slip cordon during their practice sessions in Birmingham. The first three slips were the same – Karun Nair, KL Rahul and Gill – but Sai Sudharsan and Nitish Kumar Reddy alternated at fourth slip and gully. Ten Doeschate said the change had nothing to do with Headingley but was about developing all-round fielders, freeing Jaiswal for short-leg practice. However, he did say Reddy was back in contention. Shardul Thakur, preferred to Reddy in Leeds, ended up bowling only 16 overs and didn’t contribute with the bat.Nitish Kumar Reddy has a chat with Morne Morkel•Getty Images”He’s [Reddy] very close to getting a game,” ten Doeschate said. “Obviously, he was fantastic in Australia, coming into the team and playing the way he did. We just felt that on balance, for the last game, we wanted to go with the bowling allrounder, which we thought Shardul was slightly ahead on the bowling front. We’re looking at ways of rejigging the puzzle here so we can get a batting allrounder in and obviously Nitish is our premium batting allrounder at the moment. So I would say he’s a very good chance to play this Test.”Not having a proper seam-bowling allrounder has been a headache for India, who have not had success juggling batting depth and bowling penetration. The unfortunate condition of Bumrah playing only three Tests due to workload management complicates the issue. When asked whether there was a temptation to play Bumrah at Edgbaston because 2-0 can be extremely difficult to come back from, ten Doeschate said: “It is, but we also feel we can go 1-1 or keep the score at 1-0 without Jasprit, and then again, that’s putting the eggs in the back end of the series. We’re going to need him at some stage as well. You have got to decide when you’re going to play your strongest suit.”And that’s what I was talking about the weather and all that, but we feel that whatever we put out there, we can compete in this Test match, and you know, we came pretty close without Jasprit in the second innings when he didn’t get any wickets, and you can’t win the Test series with just one bowler in any case, and the bowlers are very well aware they need to chip in with wickets. Sorry, I can’t give you a more firm answer, but we’ll work out in the next 48 or 24 hours how we’re going to manage Jasprit.”

Pep's new Grealish: Man City should have sold "one of their best" players

It’s always nice to see a player rebound from adversity. Ahead of England’s comfortable 3-0 win over Wales on Thursday evening, Manchester City’s John Stones said he considered retiring last season amid endless injury problems.

But the 30-year-old Stones has already started five matches across all competitions for the Citizens this term, and he cruised through the win at Wembley, albeit suffering but surviving a fitness scare.

Stones isn’t the only one of a City persuasion to be targeting renaissance at the more mature end of their career, though, with Jack Grealish starting to look like a £100m player once again.

Only, he’s doing it over on Merseyside, in an Everton shirt.

Why Man City loaned out Jack Grealish

Pep Guardiola broke the bank when signing Grealish from Aston Villa for a British record £100m fee. It was 2021. The Three Lions star was silky and stylish and all the rest, but he got lost somewhere within the Man City mechanics during his four years at the Etihad.

Still, the 30-year-old is a Citizen, shipped out on loan to Everton this summer. But Grealish has returned to his finest form so far this season, notching four assists in August to claim the Premier League Player of the Month and scoring the recent winner at the Hill Dickinson Stadium to end Crystal Palace’s 19-game unbeaten run.

Grealish, perhaps, is at his best when the leading figure in a team, the talisman. Under Pep’s wing, something went awry, and he toiled on the margins for his past two Premier League campaigns.

If the Sky Blues succeed in selling the £300k-per-week talent permanently next summer, they will not recoup anything near the figure once paid.

Across 157 outings for Man City, Grealish scored 17 times and supplied 23 assists for his teammates.

He was never a prolific player, per se, but there’s no doubt plenty was left to be desired, and Guardiola knew it, handing his record signing just 17 Premier League starts across his final two terms. During this period, he notched six goal contributions.

Grealish isn’t the only one who might have been ferried out this summer, though, with Pep and co maybe looking back at the opportunity to sell Bernardo Silva for a hefty figure with something akin to regret.

Pep should have sold Bernardo Silva

Silva, 31, is one of the definitive superstars of the Guardiola era at Manchester City. A six-time Premier League champion, his 419 appearances for the club place him ninth in the all-time charts.

But he’s beginning to dip. Even though the boss named him captain this summer, Silva has lost some of the magic that has so often been discernible throughout his career, and Fabrizio Romano has said only this week that the veteran “has chances to leave Man City” ahead of 2026.

It’s been a long and storied career for Silva at Manchester City, but Guardiola’s side are evolving, and habitually have the rumours of the Iberian talent’s potential departure emerged in recent years.

Last season was a struggle for everyone at the club, but Silva felt the upheaval and tumult more than most. His output was halved, and he was placed on the substitute’s bench seven times across the latter half of the top-flight term.

Altered in his role, Silva no longer produces goals and assists with the same regularity, and Sofascore record he is averaging just one chance per Premier League game this season, losing 70% of his duels so far.

He’s captained Man City six times across all competitions this season, and remains one of the most fleet-footed and intelligent players in the Premier League, even described as “one of the best players” Guardiola has ever seen.

But, aged 31, there’s a sense he’s into the autumn of his career in English football, and is not indispensable as he once was.

Bernardo Silva for Manchester City.

He’s still a tenacious and layered attacking midfielder, ranking among the top 1% of positional peers across Europe for pass completion, the top 10% for tackles and the top 7% for carries per 90, but the Portugal international could have fetched a pretty penny indeed for City in the past, with Transfermarkt recording the ace once bore a market value of €100m (£86m).

Silva is among only the top 54% for goals and assists combined, which isn’t enough for a City side looking for different attacking dimensions, easing the burden on Erling Haaland.

Saudi Arabian suitors presented themselves last year, got their bids at the ready. It came to nought, but since the Portuguese star has hinted this coming season could be his last as he stares at the culmination of his contract in Manchester, might there be a touch of ruefulness that a big sale could not have been engineered, and instead City must wave goodbye to one of their best on a free?

News is indeed growing over the possibility of Silva’s summer departure on a free, with Benfica and AC Milan considered among the frontrunners. This is a reality that Man City must accept. Perhaps they should have sold him last season, or the year before, but having signed him way back in 2017 for £43.5m, there are some who would suggest City have received bang for their buck.

Concerning the regret over not selling sooner to speed up the rebuild, the same logic might be attributed to Grealish, who languished on the side at Man City for two years before earning a move to Everton and resurrecting his career. Had City cashed in on either before they dipped and waned, a hefty figure may have been had.

Messi and Ronaldo are in contention to make yet another Men’s FIFPRO World 11 after being included among the list of nominees for the 2025 edition. Inter Miami forward Messi has featured in 17 previous iterations of the FIFPRO World 11 – more than any other player – while Al-Nassr striker Ronaldo has made the second most appearances with 15. The latest nominations are a testament to the longevity of both players, with Messi having turned 38 in June and Ronaldo set to turn 41 in less than four months’ time.

With the FIFPRO World 11 taking into account performances between 15 July 2024 and 3 August 2025 inclusive, Messi has been nominated for his remarkable efforts for Argentina and Inter Miami in that period. The former Barcelona forward helped his country book their place at the 2026 World Cup in March, while he also received the 2025 Major League Soccer Golden Boot after scoring 29 goals in 28 regular-season matches for Inter Miami.

Meanwhile, Ronaldo scored an incredible 35 goals in 41 matches for Saudi Pro League side Al-Nassr in 2024-25, while he has also found the back of the net seven times in eight games this season. The ex-Real Madrid and Manchester United man is on the brink of joining Messi at the World Cup, with Portugal – who lead Group F on 10 points – poised to qualify for next summer’s tournament. The Selecao will directly qualify for the competition if they beat the Republic of Ireland in their next qualifier on 13 November, or if they avoid defeat and second-placed Hungary do not beat Armenia on the same day.
