Wolves Could Sign ‘Insane’ Talent This Summer

Wolverhampton Wanderers have been linked to a starlet ahead of the summer transfer window, in a signing that could relieve the clubs’ goal-scoring woes.

The end of the season confirmed that Wolves were the lowest-scorers of the campaign, netting just 31 times in 38 Premier League games.

Despite ongoing FFP issues that will inevitably leave Julen Lopetegui with financial constraints this summer, Molineux could snatch a real talent in their latest link for extremely cheap.

What’s the latest on Adama Bojang to Wolves?

As reported by Standard Sport yesterday, Wolves have joined the race to sign The Gambia starlet Adama Bojang this summer.

The 19-year-old is rumoured to be valued at just £650k, currently representing Gambian club Steve Biko FC.

Wolves join Chelsea, Crystal Palace and a host of clubs around Europe in the pursuit of the 6 foot 3 forward, who caught the world’s attention for his role in The Gambia’s U20 African Cup of Nations run that saw them reach the final.

What could Adama Bojang bring to Wolves?

Lauded for his skills in finishing, pace and flair among a host of other attributes by U23 talent scout Antonio Mango, Bojang could be the man to finally unlock Wolves' suffering attack.

Earlier this year, the teenager was named in the U20 AFCON team of the competition for firing his country to a second-place finish, scoring four goals and assisting one in six games – as per Sofascore.

A similar feat is ongoing at the U20 World Cup, where the forward has maintained a 7.0 Sofascore match rating, scoring two goals in the opening three fixtures, and averaging a massive six shots per game.

Hailed as being an “insane talent” by Mango on Twitter, the young forward has been likened to Roma striker Tammy Abraham, who has previously had some fortune in the Midlands.

tammy-abraham-aston-villa-championship-promotion

The Englishman scored 26 goals for Aston Villa in the Championship and has previously been regarded as a “goal machine”, showing the heights that young Bojang could reach so early in his career.

Having scored fewer goals than games played this season in the Premier League, Lopetegui must solve the equation that is limiting his side’s output in the final third.

With two strikers expected to depart in Diego Costa and Raul Jimenez, the Spaniard could have the perfect spot for the budding talent to develop and show his worth in the Premier League.

Wolves must recruit smartly this summer, in moves that maintain quality as well as being kind financially, investing in hungry young talent such as Bojang for less than £1m could prove to be a sensational move by Lopetegui, and one that ends their torrid striker curse.

Jadeja's five-for takes India Blue a step closer to Duleep title

Ravindra Jadeja’s five-wicket haul dismissed India Red for 356 and handed India Blue a first-innings lead of 337 in Greater Noida

Ravindra Jadeja’s five-wicket haul led a persistently probing bowling effort from India Blue on a day when they were made to work harder than they would have expected to plough their way through India Red’s batting line-up. That was partly down to the pitch – which offered sluggish turn, rather than the spitting variety – and partly down to sparkling fifties from Gurkeerat Singh, Stuart Binny, Amit Mishra and Kuldeep Yadav. India Red’s spirited lower-order resistance frustrated India Blue and delighted a sizeable Monday crowd, but had little impact on the broader outcome of the match as they subsided to 356, conceding a first-innings lead of 337.Jadeja consistently attacked the stumps and turned the ball past desperately groping bats. His speed through the air – averaging over 90kph – was considerably faster than that of any other spinner, denying the batsmen time to adjust to the turn. Bowling 34 overs in the day, he made good use of a sticky surface and dented India Red’s fightback with the key wickets of Gurkeerat and Binny.India Blue could have removed the lower order more swiftly if Jadeja’s fellow spinners, Parvez Rasool and Karn Sharma had been more effective. Legspinner Karn was inconsistent with his line and length, alternating patches of incisiveness with periods that were less convincing. Offspinner Rasool had a good start to the day, troubling Shikhar Dhawan and Yuvraj Singh with offbreaks and straighter ones. Against the right-handers who followed, however, he was not as threatening as he might have liked. The most impressive spinners after Jadeja were the ones wielding bats. Mishra came in at 194 for 6, and was immediately kept company by nine close-in fielders. He, however, responded by lofting Jadeja back over his head for four. Mishra combined with Kuldeep for an 86-run partnership for the eighth wicket that temporarily brought the third session to life and restored some respectability to India Red’s innings. The reason respectability needed restoring was the limp showing of the India Red top order. Dhawan and Yuvraj managed some lovely drives in the first session, but those were far outnumbered by tentative pokes and speculative swishes. While they struggled most against Rasool, they ultimately perished to over-ambitious strokes against Abhimanyu Mithun and Jadeja.Dhawan, in particular, might rue his untimely indiscretion. His patchy 29 in his penultimate – possibly his last – innings before India’s first Test against New Zealand from September 22, puts him in a tight spot as India’s selectors mull which of three possible openers – M Vijay and KL Rahul are the others – to select in the playing XI.Jadeja, meanwhile, worked his way into fine rhythm in the second session, ending a 63-run stand for the fifth wicket between Gurkeerat and Binny when he dismissed Gurkeerat for 57 with a beauty that drifted into middle before turning away to hit off stump. Binny then put on 64 with Ankush Bains, before Jadeja ended that partnership too when he had Bains caught at second slip. The most decisive breakthrough, though, came minutes before the dinner break when Jadeja pitched one on leg stump and spun it away to hit Binny’s back pad in front of middle. That ended a knock that had been gaining in momentum and poise, and left Binny an agonising two runs short of a century.Mishra and Kuldeep counterattacked in the third session of the day, but Karn eventually dismissed both to end the innings. Riding on a huge lead, Gautam Gambhir and Mayank Agarwal played out the remaining two overs and headed to stumps with their side firmly in control.

Chelsea enter race to sign £34m talent after Ugarte blow

Chelsea are interested in signing Celta Vigo midfielder, Gabri Veiga, according to the latest reports.

What's the latest Chelsea transfer news?

As the Mauricio Pochettino era gets underway this summer, the Blues are set to have a very busy transfer window.

Several key figures are set to leave the club, with Mason Mount potentially on his way to Premier League rivals, Manchester United and Kai Havertz rumoured to be on his way out of Stamford Bridge as well, while the club have also been linked to a number of exciting young prospects.

Having been linked to Sporting CP midfielder Manuel Ugarte, the two-time Champions League winners have missed out on the Uruguayan, having been outbid by French champions, Paris Saint-Germain.

Chelsea's priority is still to revamp the midfield, though, with the club also recently linked to Brighton star, Moises Caicedo and now, The Guardian reports that they have also joined the race for the Celta star, who has a release clause of €40m (£34m).

Will Veiga join Chelsea?

The Blues are far from the only side interested in the 21-year-old, though, with a number of Premier League sides already reportedly targeting him.

The Spaniard has enjoyed a breakthrough season in LaLiga this year, and both Liverpool and Newcastle have taken notice of him. It was recently revealed that Jurgen Klopp's side were the front-runners in the race to sign Veiga, but things might change now that Pochettino's side has entered the race.

Despite dominating on the ball this season, averaging the fourth-highest possession in the Premier League, Chelsea had one of their worst campaigns in recent years, and their inability to find the back of the net is largely to blame for that.

In fact, with just 38 goals scored this season, the Blues were actually outscored by all but four teams in the league, including Leeds United and Leicester City who were both relegated to the Championship.

Adding Veiga, who journalist Euan McTear lauded as a "dangerous" talent, to their midfield would go a long way to help solve their goal-scoring issues, though, with the Spaniard emerging as an exciting, prolific gem for Celta Vigo, with 11 goals and four assists in the Spanish top-flight this year.

In fact, the 21-year-old was the highest-scoring midfielder in the division.

Speaking to Estadio Deportivo, Celta chairman Carlos Mourino has revealed his reluctance to sell Veiga, admitting the club wouldn't negotiate any possible moves for the player, saying:

"We have always said from the beginning that no one has to negotiate with us because we are not going to sell it."

Due to a release clause in his contract, any move for the 21-year-old will cost the Blues around £34m, but having spent almost £600m since last summer, Chelsea have already shown their willingness to splash the cash, and adding Veiga to their midfield would get Pochettino's Stamford Bridge reign off to a very promising start.

Tasmania fast bowler Cameron Stevenson picked up five wickets on debut at Hurstville Oval to prevent South Australia from reaching the Matador Cup finals. Needing to win with a bonus point in order to reach the elimination final, the Redbacks were set a tall order with a target of 296 that would need to be reached inside 40 overs.South Australia did their best to ensure their tempo was up to standard, opener and captain Travis Head racing to 35 from 18 balls and Tom Cooper making 63 off 65, and gave themselves a chance if they could keep enough wickets in hand. But Stevenson claimed the wickets of Jake Weatherald and Jake Lehmann and then ran through the tail as the Redbacks were bowled out for 267 in the 39th over.Earlier, contributions from Alex Doolan (79), Dom Michael (57), Tim Paine (44) and Ben McDermott (44) pushed the Tigers to 7 for 295 from their 50 overs.Tasmania finished fifth on the tournament table and South Australia sixth, and the elimination final will now be played between New South Wales and Victoria for a place in the decider against Queensland.

Newcastle Eyeing Swoop To Land "Exciting" £50m Ace

An update has emerged on Newcastle United and their plans to bolster their midfield options in the upcoming summer transfer window…

What's the latest on Romeo Lavia to Newcastle?

According to The Telegraph, the Mapgies are eyeing up a possible swoop to sign Southampton central midfielder Romeo Lavia ahead of the 2023/24 campaign.

Dan Ashworth and Eddie Howe are said to be exploring potential deals to improve their squad by snapping up gems from the teams that were relegated from the Premier League this season.

The Daily Mail recently reported that the Saints are expected to demand a fee of up to £50m for the Belgian talent despite being knocked down to the Championship.

Would Romeo Lavia be a success at Newcastle?

Howe could finally unlock the best of Bruno Guimaraes' attacking talents in the middle of the park by securing a deal for Lavia as the 19-year-old could enjoy great success as a holding midfielder at St James' Park.

The former Manchester City gem enjoyed a strong first season in professional football in spite of Southampton's relegation and bringing in a player with his defensive attributes in the No 6 role would allow the manager to push the Brazilian ace further up the pitch.

In the 2022/23 campaign, the current Toon star made 36 appearances as a defensive midfielder and only one in a No 8 position, which resulted in four goals and two 'big chances' created in the Premier League.

Newcastle midfielder Bruno Guimaraes

Whereas, nine of his starts came as an eight in 2021/22 and the maestro produced four goals and three 'big chances' created for his teammates.

These statistics suggest that Guimaraes' attacking output was stunted in 2022/23 because of his need to play in a deeper position in the midfield

Lavia, meanwhile, played 22 times as a defensive midfielder this season for Southampton and the "diamond" – as he was dubbed by talent scout Jacek Kulig – could provide protection to the back four and allow the Brazil international to have more of an impact in the final third.

The Saints star, who was hailed as "exciting" by journalist Dan George, ranks in the top 29% or higher for tackles, interceptions, and blocks per 90 amongst his positional peers in the men's top five leagues over the last 365 days, which suggests that the teenager excels at cutting out opposition attacks on a regular basis and may yet only improve given his age.

He could play at the base of Howe's midfield and provide the likes of Guimaraes, Joelinton, and Joe Willock a platform from which they can build their attacks from, as they would have an excellent defensive presence behind them to sweep up and stop the opposition from creating chances.

Hungry Pant yearns for bigger, better performances

The 19-year-old Delhi batsman walked out to bat on an empty stomach and ended up feasting on Jharkhand’s attack on a flat track with a 48-ball hundred

Arun Venugopal08-Nov-2016

Rishabh Pant defends his aggressive natural style of play: “When you express yourself, it doesn’t mean you are not playing responsibly”•PTI

Rishabh Pant probably doesn’t intend to deliver punchlines, but does them anyway, and in style. Sample this: ” (There are no limitations in cricket. Everything is unlimited. I need to raise the limits of my performances).” The Delhi batsman said this after smashing a 48-ball century against Jharkhand in Thumba to add to his hundred in the first innings. With 799 runs, including four hundreds, Pant is also the leading run-getter so far in this Ranji Trophy season. The 19-year-old, though, doesn’t want to count the number of centuries he has scored. “Only performances matter – the bigger the better,” he tells ESPNcricinfo.Delhi’s top order responded strongly after being asked to follow on, scoring 214 for the loss of three wickets. When Pant’s turn came, he walked out to bat on an empty stomach, again. “I get very little time for breakfast,” he said with a laugh. “Because, every day I either have batting or wicket-keeping [drills before play]. That’s the system in every match.”That, however, didn’t stop Pant from creaming Jharkhand’s bowlers for 135 in 67 balls, with 78 runs coming in sixes. Pant was surprised to learn his 21 sixes in the match was the second-most in a first-class game. (I felt I wasn’t batting properly and that I had to play better, that’s all). I had got an opportunity to bat again; that hasn’t happened in the most of our matches,” Pant, who has batted in only seven innings from five games, says.Jharkhand left-arm spinner Shahbaz Nadeem, who is Pant’s Delhi Daredevils team-mate in the IPL, was at the receiving end of some “unbelievable” strokes. “There was some rough and we were trying to land there, but he would step out and easily hit sixes off even those deliveries that were out of his reach,” Nadeem says. “In the first innings, he was batting on 99, and when Sunny Gupta, the offspinner, was bowling, he hit him against the spin over midwicket. That was a pretty huge six.”According to Nadeem, bowling to Pant was particularly difficult given how flat the pitch was. “There are the Virender Sehwag-types who believe in their strokes right from the start rather than taking singles. Pant belongs to that category,” he says. “There were fielders on the boundary line, but he was still clearing them easily.”For his part, Pant said when the shot is timed well, it doesn’t matter if the ground is small or big. Coach KP Bhaskar had called for better shot-selection from Pant after Delhi’s 160-run loss to Karnataka, but according to Pant, Bhaskar has asked him to back his natural game. He believes playing his natural game and batting responsibly aren’t mutually exclusive. “When you express yourself, it doesn’t mean you are not playing responsibly,” he said. “People generally think that when someone plays attacking cricket, he doesn’t bat responsibly. But, if you don’t play responsibly, there is only one outcome: you get out.”Does Pant think he could have scored the hundred in fewer deliveries? “Of course. I had reached 96 in around 42 or 43 deliveries. But then, they were bowling outside off, and I couldn’t force myself to go after those deliveries,” he says, and throws in another punchline for good measure: ” (Anything can happen in cricket).”
