Tottenham: Spurs In More Talks For "Quality" Signing

Tottenham Hotspur are in ongoing talks over Bayer Leverkusen defender Edmond Tapsoba amid reports they're also negotiating Micky van de Ven.

Who will join Spurs this summer?

Incoming new manager Ange Postecoglou, before he's even officially started work, will be ecstatic at the business conducted by Spurs so far this summer.

The Australian is yet to properly begin his tenure as Tottenham manager, which is set to kick off on Saturday, but Postecoglou has so far watched both goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario and playmaker James Maddison come through the door.

Both deals, after quick negotiations, have been confirmed by the Lilywhites as Spurs look to bolster weak areas of the squad and potentially challenge for a European place next season.

Reports have suggested that the north Londoners are not done there, though, with attention now turning to the capture of a star centre-half to plug their leaky defence.

ange-postecoglou-manager-spurs

Tottenham were subject to some alarming and worrisome defensive stats over 2022/2023, with no other top flight side above 15th conceding more than Spurs last campaign.

It is an issue both Postecoglou and chairman Daniel Levy will be eager to resolve, and quickly, as reliable media sources like Fabrizio Romano claim they've now opened direct talks to sign star Wolfsburg defender Micky van de Ven.

The 6 foot 4 defender has been praised for his performances in the Bundesliga, but according to The Evening Standard and journalist Dan Kilpatrick, he isn't the only centre-back they're in negotiations for.

Indeed, as per their information, it is believed Tapsoba of Bayer Leverkusen is also tickling their fancy – with "talks continuing" for the Burkina Faso international after their Maddison deal.

To gage price and other factors, it is perhaps prudent for Spurs to engage in multiple talks for different centre-back targets, with Tapsoba still firmly attracting their interest.

Alongside both Tapsoba and van de Ven, Tottenham are said to be keen on re-signing Barcelona defender Clement Lenglet, coming after his 22/23 loan spell in north London.

What's been said about Edmond Tapsoba?

An undroppable for Leverkusen boss Xabi Alonso last season, only their goalkeeper played more German top flight minutes than Tapsoba last season.

The 24-year-old also averaged more Bundesliga clearances per 90 than all of his teammates bar Jonathan Tah (WhoScored), backing why Spurs are currently in discussions for the defender.

Tapsoba has also been called a "top quality" player in recent years by members of the media, so his potential signing could be quite the enticing prospect.

Vaidya 89 sets up India's 114-run win

A round-up of the first round of games from the Women’s World Cup Qualifiers, held on February 7, 2017

ESPNcricinfo staff07-Feb-20171:25

The ICC Women’s World Cup Qualifier explained

Three of India’s top four made half-centuries – 19-year old Devika Vaidya top-scored with 89 in only her second ODI – as India beat hosts Sri Lanka by 114 runs in their first Women’s World Cup Qualifier match at P Sara Oval. Captain Mithali Raj made 70 off 62 balls while opener Deepti Sharma started the procession with 54 off 96. These were especially good returns in light of India missing opener Smriti Mandhana due to injury.Set a target of 260, Sri Lanka did well to reach 65 for 1 in the 23rd over but in an effort to push on, they lost seven wickets for 66 runs and were forced to shift their focus into playing out the 50 overs. Left-arm spinner Rajeshwari Gayakwad was India’s best bowler with 10-2-19-2, and she was ably supported by fellow left-armer Ekta Bisht, who took 2 for 27.”It’s always good to start with a win,” Raj said. “We’d started slowly in the match but Devika and Deepti put up a useful partnership to help increase the run rate. It was a good pitch to bat on and we enjoyed batting out there.”A fierce half-century from No. 6 Chloe Tryon headlined South Africa’s victory over Pakistan by 63 runs. She made 79 off 69 balls with five fours and four sixes to lift the total from 129 for 5 in the 25th over to 258. “It’s never nice coming in that situation,” Tryon said after the match, “but I had to put my head down and graft a bit. And I felt like I gave myself enough time. I was very patient and I felt like I was really calm. I knew towards the end that I could pick the run rate up.”Pakistan’s reply was led by Nain Abidi’s 62 off 105 balls, but she barely had any support from the other end. The second highest score was 38 from captain Sana Mir.South Africa opted to bat at the toss but they had to deal with the loss of regular wickets ever since they lost their first in the third over. Mignon du Preez, having recently relinquished leadership of the side, made 40 at No. 3 but it wasn’t until Tryon came to the crease that they began to prosper. She strung a partnership of 89 for the sixth wicket with the new captain Dane van Niekerk.Pakistan were in much the same position as South Africa in their chase – 110 for 5 in the 29th over – but their players could not summon the same firepower as Tryon. Abidi and Mir added 70 runs in 112 balls for the sixth wicket to make sure Pakistan at least were not all out.”Our team has gone through a major transformation and the young players have done well,” Mir said. “I am overall happy with the way the team is shaping up. It was a match where we started off really well, but an excellent innings by Tryon saw South Africa through.”File photo: Fargana Hoque made her third ODI fifty•IDI/Getty Images

Bangladesh defeated Papua New Guinea by 118 runs at the Colombo Cricket Ground. Fifties from Sharmin Akhter and Fargana Hoque helped Bangladesh put on 215 for 6 after they elected to bat, and then their bowlers put in a collective effort to roll PNG over for 97.Akhter finished with 56 off 86 balls, while Hoque made 51 off 72. With those two having put on a solid platform, Bangladesh would have been looking at a larger total but PNG picked up four wickets for 39 runs to slow things down. They were unable to build on this effort though, conceding 57 runs in the final 10 overs and fared even worse when they came out to bat. Seven out of the 11 players fell for single-digit scores. Four of the five bowlers Bangladesh used took two wickets each, with Rumana Ahmed’s 2 for 13 in seven overs the most economical of them.Allrounder Kim Garth top-scored with 63, before taking 3 for 24, as Ireland defended 237 against Zimbabwe to secure a 119-run win in Colombo.Ireland were 42 for 2 in the 13th over after being put into bat, and it took a 94-run stand between Garth, who came in at No.3, and captain Laura Delany (47) to help set a platform. After Delany’s dismissal, Garth put on 52 for the fifth wicket with Clare Shillingford (30 off 20) before they fell off consecutive deliveries to medium-pacer Josephine Nkomo (2-46).Zimbabwe were bowled out for 118 in the chase. With a top score of 35 from Ashley Ndiraya and a best partnership of 32, they never stood a chance. Legspinner Ciara Metcalfe (3-38), seamer Amy Kenealy (2-19) and debutant left-arm spinner Robyn Lewis (2-7) were the wreckers-in-chief.

وبسؤاله عن إمكانية الاتصال بـ كلوب لتدريب مانشستر يونايتد أجاب ضاحكاً: “لا يمكنك طرح أسئلة كهذه لي!”.

Aston Villa Considering Bid To Sign £22m La Liga Dynamo

An update has emerged on Aston Villa and their plans to bolster their attacking options in the summer transfer window…

What's the latest on Ferran Torres to Aston Villa?

According to reports in Spain, the Villans are weighing up a bid to sign Barcelona winger Ferran Torres ahead of the 2023/24 campaign.

The report claims that the club could make an offer to sign the Spain international on loan until the end of next season with an option to sign him permanently for €25m (£22m).

However, it states that the La Liga giants are not tempted by a temporary deal at this moment in time and that the player is not desperate to leave the club.

Although, it is said that the situation could change if Villa offer more money, or it becomes clear that the ex-Manchester City man will not be getting desirable game time next term.

This comes off the back of the club closing in on a deal to sign Pau Torres from Villarreal on a permanent basis, with Monchi and Unai Emery now plotting a second raid on La Liga.

Where would Ferran Torres fit in at Aston Villa?

The 23-year-old ace is a versatile forward who is capable of playing across the frontline but his predominant position is on the right flank, which could be bad news for Bertrand Traore this summer as it may leave him without a place in the squad.

Emery opted to bring the Burkina Faso international back to the club after a loan spell with Basaksehir in Turkey during the January transfer window, and he made eight Premier League appearances in the second half of the season.

The 27-year-old, who has played on the right wing for the majority of his career, scored two goals and failed to create a single 'big chance' for his teammates in that time, while he averaged a Sofascore rating of 6.71.

This came after the former Chelsea prospect averaged a Sofascore rating of 6.64 across nine league outings for the Villans the previous season, in which the dud did not score a single goal or create any 'big chances'.

Barcelona winger Ferran Torres.

Torres, meanwhile, scored eight goals and conjured 15 'big chances' across 54 La Liga outings for Barcelona between the 2021/22 and 2022/23 campaigns.

The exciting attacker, whose production was hailed as "exceptional" by Pep Guardiola, also found the back of the net nine times and assisted three goals in 28 Premier League appearances for City during his time in England.

This is particularly impressive when you consider that Ollie Watkins (15) was the only Villa player with more than six goals in the division last term.

These statistics suggest that Torres has the potential to provide more quality than Traore in the final third in terms of scoring and creating goals from a position on the right wing.

The Barcelona attacker is also four years younger than the current Villa wizard and would therefore offer more to the club in the long term, which could result in Emery ditching the former Lyon man in favour of Torres – immediately and in the future.

Tottenham Could Land Isak 2.0 In £26m Machine

Tottenham Hotspur supporters are set to face an anxious summer amid the continued uncertainty surrounding the future of talisman, Harry Kane, with it yet to be seen if the England skipper will be spearheading Ange Postecoglou's side next season.

While Spurs chairman Daniel Levy is believed to be adamant that the 29-year-old will not be sold to a domestic rival before the September deadline, an exit could well still be on the cards with just 12 months left to run on the striker's contract, with German giants Bayern Munich currently circling.

The hope will be that the long-serving marksman opts to stay put in north London for next season and beyond, although Postecoglou and co may need to consider potential striking targets who could attempt to fill Kane's void if he is to move on this summer.

According to recent reports in Spain, the Lilywhites have been contacted by the agents of Udinese forward, Beto, regarding the prospect of a possible summer move, with the Portuguese hotshot potentially set to be up for grabs for a fee of around €30m (£26m).

The 6 foot 4 striker – who originally joined the Serie A side on loan from Portimonense back in 2021 – has caught the eye after scoring 21 goals in just 63 games for his current side to date, ensuring he could potentially be the man to bolster Postecoglou's attacking ranks this summer.

Who is Udinese striker Beto?

While perhaps not a household name, the towering machine is seemingly a "quality player" – according to journalist Josh Bunting – having particularly impressed with the manner in which he simply "spooks defenders" when running in behind, in the words of writer Sam Tighe.

An "intelligent" number nine who possesses "good hold up play", in the words of Bunting, the 25-year-old could evidently offer more to Postecoglou than merely his finishing prowess, helping to provide a focal point that Tottenham's other attacking talents can work around.

Although the Lisbon native is yet to be tested at Premier League level, he is said to share a statistical likeness to current Newcastle United star, Alexander Isak – according to Opta's Player Radars – with the latter man having flourished in his debut season at St James' Park.

Despite being hampered by injury in the early throes of 2022/23, Isak – who was named by Alasdair Gold as a player of interest to Spurs last summer – went on to score ten goals in just 22 league games, helping to propel the Magpies to Champions League qualification in the process.

To then find their own version of the 23-year-old in the form of Beto could allow Tottenham to realise their own top four ambitions next season, with the pair notably alike due to their predatory penalty box instincts, as they rank in the top 13% among their European peers for touches in the attacking penalty area.

Equally, the duo are also alike with regard to their ability to defend from the front, with Beto ranking in the top 40% for defensive actions, while Isak ranks in the top 36% in that regard following his fine early impact on Tyneside.

With the latter man destined to be "worth £100m" in the future – according to talkSPORT's Jason Cundy – perhaps the Udinese ace could enjoy a similarly meteoric rise if he is to link up with Postecoglou this summer.

Second ton sets up Knights' record 148-run win

David Miller struck a brisk half-century•AFP

Knights handed Cape Cobras a 148-run drubbing after Rudi Second’s sixth List A century set up Knights’ bonus-point victory in Cape Town, a result that helped them remain in contention for the title. It was the Knights’ biggest win in tournament history.Coming off the back of a last-over defeat in the previous game, Knights were dealt the early loss of opener Diego Rosier (16), after being put in to bat. Second, the Knights wicketkeeper, anchored the innings thereon with a 128-ball 104, hitting including eight fours. He was ably supported by Tumelo Bodibe who struck a career-best 93 off 107 balls – studded with eleven fours – and shared a 183-run stand for the second wicket with Second. While the partnership took Knights’ past 200 in 37 overs, it was David Miller’s quickfire 58 that helped Knights amass 300 in 50 overs. Miller, batting at No. 4, hammered six fours and two sixes in his 37-ball knock, and put on 75 off 52 balls with Second for the third wicket before falling to Rory Kleinveldt, who claimed the best returns (3-41) for Cobras. In reply, Knights medium-pacer Shadley van Schalkwyk’s double-strike in the third over set the Cobras back. Dillon du Preez then removed Andrea Agathangelou (24) and Zubayr Hamza (2) as regular wickets had the Cobras reeling at 40 for 5 in the 12th over.Dayyaan Galiem top-scored with 41, and put on 43 runs for the sixth wicket with Aviwe Mgijima (19). Rosier (3-29) then chipped away at the tail with his legspin to help Knights skittle Cobras out for 152 in 32 overs.Farhaan Behardien top-scored for Titans with a 50-ball 45•Gallo Images

Titans beat table-toppers Dolphins by 33 runs in a rain-curtailed contest in Durban to move to within one point of the top spot. Defending 205 from 40 overs, Titans removed the Dolphins openers inside the first three overs, before rain reduced the game further. Just 16 runs, and six overs, were knocked off the revised D/L calculations. Handy cameos from Sarel Erwee (38) and Khaya Zondo (41) kept Dolphins in the hunt, but regular wickets effectively killed the game. Left-arm spinner Shaun von Berg finished with figures of 4 for 40, while medium-pacer Junior Dala took 3 for 26.That Titans had 205 to defend was down to a 71-run, fifth-wicket stand between Farhaan Behardien (45) and Albie Morkel (38), after they were reduced to 73 for 4 in the 21st over. David Wiese provided the required impetus towards the end with a 25-ball 37 that included three fours and two sixes. All five Dolphins bowlers picked up at least one wicket each.

Man United Monitoring £34m Midfielder This Summer

Manchester United are "very aware" of Fiorentina midfielder Sofyan Amrabat and are said to be "monitoring" the Moroccan, according to Ben Jacobs.

Will United sign Amrabat?

Following the 2022 World Cup in which he was one of Morocco's star performers on the way to the semi-final, it seemed inevitable that Fiorentina would struggle to keep hold of Amrabat in the following transfer window.

The 26-year-old emerged for a transfer target for a number of teams across Europe and the expectation was that he would move on in January.

However, he stayed put in Florence and helped the club to two finals, unfortunately losing both to Inter and West Ham in the Coppa Italia and Europa Conference League respectively.

Now another transfer window has come around, so have rumours of Amrabat's Fiorentina exit once more, with Man United one of the clubs potentially circling the defensive-midfielder.

According to Ben Jacobs, while Amrabat is not a priority target for Erik ten Hag, United are monitoring the Morocco international and are said to be "very aware" of his situation.

Speaking on The Football Terrace, Jacobs said: "We are hearing a lot of rumours aren't we about Manchester United and Amrabat, and I think it's fair to say that they're monitoring that situation."

He added: "So, it means that the hierarchy at Manchester United are very aware of both the player and the terms of the deal, but we also have to make it clear not a top target at the moment. So, it will come down to budget, but it will also come down to chemistry and timing.

"And this again illustrates the point I made right at the top of the show: Erik ten Hag doesn't want to just buy, buy, buy and then breathe and rest because otherwise he might have, if it was financially possible of course, five or six [players] instead of one or two, and that can disrupt the balance, it can disrupt the pre-season.

"So, Amrabat could end up being one to watch if he becomes a priority later in the window, but there's nothing significant at this stage and I wouldn't call him a top target in terms of the position that Manchester United are looking to strengthen right now."

Jacobs goes on to say that the priority is bringing in a new goalkeeper, which will be Andre Onana of Inter, and then focus will shift to the search for a number nine such as Rasmus Hojlund, Dusan Vlahovic or Victor Osimhen.

Reports linking Fred and Scott McTominay with potential exits from Old Trafford mean that Ten Hag may have to strengthen his midfield options later in the window, at which point Amrabat could become a priority target.

How good is Amrabat?

Amrabat is far more than just a destroyer in the centre of the park, benefitting from playing in a possession-based Fiorentina side coached by Vincenzo Italiano.

Compared to other midfielders in Serie A per 90 last season, Amrabat ranked in the top 3% for pass completion percentage (88.8%), medium (93.9%) and long (84.1%) pass completion, progressive passes (7.93) and passes into the final third (7.12). His ability to dictate games from central midfield and his expert passing range would make him a wonderful asset for Ten Hag at Old Trafford.

Amrabat – hailed an "absolute midfield monster" – is also very difficult to get off the ball and is very press-resistant – a key skill in the Premier League – while also being able to progress the ball up the pitch through his powerful running. He ranked in the top 1% for total carrying distance and progressive carrying distance last term.

Very capable of biting into tackles and fighting off opponents too, the 26-year-old is an all-rounder in the centre of the park and would likely thrive in England's top tier.

Finch, Christian all but bat Redbacks out of final

ESPNcricinfo’s wrap of the fourth day of the Sheffield Shield final between Victoria and South Australia in Alice Springs

A third consecutive Sheffield Shield title for Victoria appears all but certain after the Bushrangers ground South Australia in to the Alice Springs dust on the fourth day of the final. Needing only to draw to lift the Shield, Victoria batted without urgency throughout the day; they started in the morning on 2 for 38 and added 216 over the course of the day, for the loss of a further four wickets. That meant that by stumps Victoria’s lead had swollen to 454 runs, and even the most diehard South Australia supporter would agree that to overhaul a target of at least that magnitude on the final day will be essentially impossible. At the close of play Victoria were on 6 for 254, with Daniel Christian unbeaten on 53 from 178 deliveries and Seb Gotch on 29 from 115.The day began encouragingly for the Redbacks, when nightwatchman Chris Tremain edged behind off Daniel Worrall to give Alex Carey an all-time record 59th dismissal for the Shield season. But to have a realistic victory chance, South Australia needed to run through the Bushrangers cheaply after that; instead, a series of stubborn Victoria partnerships ensured the lead grew to daunting proportions.Aaron Finch combined with opener Travis Dean for a 66-run stand that ended when Dean sent a catch to short cover off Adam Zampa’s legspin for 38 from 86 balls. Cameron White fell cheaply when he was lbw to Joe Mennie for 4, but Finch and Daniel Christian then put together a 39-run sixth-wicket stand to steady Victoria again.Such was the desperation of South Australia’s captain Travis Head that by stumps he had tried nine bowlers, with only Carey and Callum Ferguson not having been called upon. However, one of those changes brought a surprise breakthrough when opening batsman Jake Weatherald, bowling his first over of legspin at state level, found a way through Finch to bowl him for 83.However, it was to prove the last wicket of the day as Christian and Gotch then bedded in for a partnership that by stumps had reached 71 runs and had occupied 39 overs. If Victoria’s approach was not exactly the finest advertisement for the Shield final, which has been under threat in the domestic calendar in recent years, it should at least ensure the first hat-trick of Shield titles in the state’s long history.
