Former South African Test opener Jacques Rudolph will retire from all forms of cricket at the end of the 2017 English season. The 36-year old has stepped down as four-day captain for Glamorgan with immediate effect, but will continue leading the T20 side until his retirement.”The time feels right to call an end to my playing career,” Rudolph said. “I have been incredibly fortunate to have enjoyed playing the game I love for the last 20 years. But at the end of this summer it will be time to focus on a new venture away from cricket and spend more time with my young family.”Rudolph, a product of the famed Afrikaans Hoer Seunskool, made his first-class debut twenty seasons ago in the 1997-98 summer. He played 48 Tests in two stints – the first 35 came between 2003 and 2006 and the remaining 13 between 2011 and 2012 – because he had signed a Kolpak deal with Yorkshire in 2007.By scoring 1000 runs or more in his first four seasons with the county, Rudolph found his way back into the South African team. But his second coming yielded only one Test century and he was dropped in November 2012. Rudolph then turned his attention to playing franchise cricket for the Titans and eventually called time on his South Africa career after the 2015-16 season.Rudolph has been with Glamorgan since 2014 and has captained them for the last two seasons. In 2017, he scored 319 runs in five first-class matches at 35.44 and 305 runs in eight one-day matches at 38.12. The T20 competition he will lead Glamorgan in begins on July 7. While Rudolph has not detailed what life after cricket holds, he has interest in a game farm with fellow South African batsman Boeta Dippenaar. With Rudolph standing down, Glamorgan have given the Championship captaincy to their 35-year-old Australian seamer Michael Hogan until the end of the season.

Aston Villa In The Race To Sign £20k-A-Week International

Aston Villa are one of several Premier League clubs who are interested in signing Wilfried Gnonto this summer, according to a fresh transfer update.

How good is Wilfried Gnonto?

The Whites ace is only 19 years of age, but he is already making a name for himself, winning 12 caps for Italy and catching the eye at Elland Road since arriving from FC Zurich last summer. In total, he has registered four goals and assists apiece in 28 appearances, looking to provide some attacking magic while others such as Patrick Bamford struggled around him.

With Leeds now consigned to a season back in the Championship following a bitterly disappointing 2022/23 Premier League campaign, it looks highly likely that Gnonto will move on to pastures new in order to avoid at least a year of plying his trade in the second tier of English football.

The teenager isn't going to be without suitors, and has been linked with a move to Villa recently as they continue to make strong headway this summer – already bringing in the likes of Pau Torres and Youri Tielemans from Villarreal and Leicester City respectively.

What's the latest on Gnonto to Aston Villa?

According to Football Insider, Villa are rivalling a number of Premier League sides in the race to snap up Gnonto in the current transfer window, having enquired about a move for him alongside fellow target Moussa Diaby, with the Villans thought to have had a £30m bid for the Frenchman rejected by the Bundesliga outfit.

The key update amid Villa's interest is that Leeds are now thought to be expecting Gnonto's departure.

Football Insider claimed: "Leeds are expecting Wilfried Gnonto to depart from the club in this transfer window. There is a lot of interest in the winger, with Aston Villa, Everton and Crystal Palace all having made enquires for the Italian international.

"Gnonto, 19, is also attracting interest abroad as clubs in Italy and other clubs around Europe have also expressed interest in the youngster.

"Everton and Aston Villa alongside other Premier League clubs are interested in signing Leeds United star Gnonto.

"The Italy international has been attracting clubs from his home country as well as top teams in England throughout an impressive debut campaign in the top flight."

Gnonto could be a fantastic squad addition for Villa ahead of the beginning of the 2023/24 season. He may not necessarily be a definite starter, but he can certainly challenge other wide players for regular football. While he is still extremely young, his caps for Italy show that he is already wise beyond his years and should only improve in the coming years, making him a strong long-term option this summer.

Gary Neville has described the Leeds maestro as "really good" in the past, while Italy boss Roberto Mancini has lauded the "quality" that he possesses, with such praise from two high-profile figures further outlining what an exciting prospect he is.

While there is clearly strong competition for Gnonto's signature this summer, Villa surely jump out as one of the most appealing options for him considering the huge progress being made under Unai Emery, as well as the fact that the Villans can promise him European football next season following their qualification for the UEFA Europa Conference League.

Leeds: Farke Eyeing £2.2m Move For Next James Maddison At Elland Road

Leeds United are interested in signing Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Edouard Michut this summer as newly-appointed head coach Daniel Farke crafts a team capable of securing promotion from the Championship.

Farke has already completed his first deal as Whites boss, landing 22-year-old defender Ethan Ampadu from Chelsea for £7m earlier this week, and looks set to invest in youth to ensure the framework at Elland Road breeds success for a lasting period.

And according to the Daily Mail print edition on 20th July [page 70] (via MOT Leeds News), Leeds have now approached the French Ligue 1 champions for the talented French gem, having been handed a boost after the 20-year-old was left out of PSG's pre-season tour, indicating that he is not within the club's plans.

Sunderland, where he had been on loan last season, decided against activating the €2.5m (£2.2m) buy clause this summer despite impressing during his year-long stint in the Championship, but Leeds could now entice the player into returning to England's second tier and cementing a regular starting berth in an outfit hoping for a swift and immediate return to the Premier League.

Could Leeds sign Edouard Michut?

Despite rejecting the Black Cats, transfer insider Dean Jones, speaking to GIVEMESPORT, recently stated that the dynamic midfielder is willing to consider a move to West Yorkshire.

Jones said:

"Michut would offer something a bit different to Leeds and he is open-minded about the move as it could fit his style of play.

"He could have stayed at Sunderland but he wasn’t getting on the ball enough and at Leeds, a side we have to expect will dominate games, would give him more opportunity to get on the ball and make things happen.

"Leeds do have limitations in terms of their spending in the Championship this season and this could be an astute addition."

How good is Edouard Michut?

As per Sofascore, the Frenchman made 24 appearances during his Stadium of Light loan spell last term, starting only 50% of those games, and impressed with the slickness of his passing – completing 88% of his passes – and the consistency and robustness of his tackling – averaging 1.7 per game, on top of 58% total ground duels won per game.

A versatile and dynamic midfielder, scout Jacek Kulig previously illustrated his flexibility and aptitude across the defensive, central and attacking sections of the middle third, highlighting his most notable qualities as a playmaker with 'great agility, flair and coordination' and a 'very good technical ability.'

Farke's position in the Leeds dugout could well be the defining factor that could edge a deal over the line, should it indeed be completed, with the German boss's previous experience in nurturing promising talent underscoring the wave that Michut could ride.

Former Leicester midfielder James Maddison.

James Maddison plied his trade under the 46-year-old manager at Norwich City, making 49 appearances under Farke's wing and scoring 15 goals and supplying 12 assists before completing a £24m transfer to Leicester City in 2018.

Maddison, while primarily playing as an attacking midfielder, is also adept from a deeper position at the kernel of the midfield, and given his own playmaking prowess, ranking among the top 11% of positional peers for assists and the top 13% for shot-creating actions per 90 over the past year, as per FBref, could be the perfect player for Michut to emulate.

Journalist Josh Bunting also highlighted Michut's unrelenting intensity by waxing lyrical over his knack at covering "every blade" on the pitch, and for such a diligent, hard-working youngster, it might just be that he harnesses his prodigious talent under Farke's tutelage at Leeds.

As such, the German head coach could unearth his next young midfield star if the Whites' hierarchy sanctions a move for the PSG whiz.

'The evidence against me is ridiculous' – Jamshed

The former Pakistan batsman said the WhatsApp conversations that the PCB intend to use against him in court were baseless

George Dobell and Umar Farooq13-Jun-2017

The PCB’s charge against Nasir Jamshed•ESPNcricinfo Ltd

Nasir Jamshed found the evidence of corruption against him so “flimsy” that he laughed out loud when he read about it. The former Pakistan batsman was arrested in the UK in February in connection with an investigation into corruption in the 2017 Pakistan Super League. Through its own investigations, the PCB insists Jamshed is a central figure.Four months later, the only charge the board has laid against him is for obstruction and non-cooperation in the investigations. But the PCB has indicated that further, more serious charges can be laid against him, and is waiting for the UK’s National Crime Agency (NCA) – which arrested Jamshed – to share more evidence with it.And Jamshed is the subject of two concurrent hearings in front of a tribunal constituted by the PCB in Lahore; the main one, in front of a three-man tribunal looking into the obstruction charges and the second, in front of a one-man disciplinary panel, is one Jamshed initiated arguing for his provisional suspension to be lifted. In the meantime, details of a key element of the board’s evidence against him have been leaked, but are, Jamshed insists, so “ridiculous” that he was “amused” when he read them in the media. Eight WhatsApp voice notes, allegedly exchanged between Jamshed and Khalid Latif – another Pakistan batsman facing charges of corruption – first found their way into the media and have now been uploaded to a standalone website. The exchanges, in Urdu, are ostensibly about one or more bat deals; the PCB’s argument is that they are code for corrupt deals.”They claim they have WhatsApp voice messages that show me talking about spot-fixing in code,” Jamshed told ESPNcricinfo in his first interview since his arrest. “But what they actually have is WhatsApp voice messages that show me talking about selling bats. There’s no code involved at all.”I’ve had an arrangement for years whereby I would sell a few CA bats and take a 10% commission. It’s no secret; I’m allowed to do it. I laughed out loud when I saw details of their evidence against me. I was amused. It’s so flimsy. It’s ridiculous.”The guy they say is a bookie… works in a Honda showroom as far as I know … We spoke about him buying some bats from me, but in the end he didn’t.”If that is as good as they have, they should dismiss the case now. They have no evidence of any financial gain and, after all this time, they have not even charged me with spot-fixing or trying to fix a game. They have no real evidence against me.”Those messages, however, are not the only evidence the PCB claims to have against Jamshed. The board says there are witness statements from several players that appear to implicate him. There is also the potential NCA information, which the PCB believes could have a bearing not only on the ongoing hearings against Sharjeel Khan and Latif, but also Jamshed. In fact, the board feels it has enough to continue with proceedings against Jamshed even if he is cleared by the NCA – the PCB’s anti-corruption code being different to the UK criminal code. It has maintained since it laid charges against Jamshed, that it retains the right to level further corruption charges, and that had the board been able to meet him, it would already have done so.”The original corruption investigation is still pending and we have retained our right to bring additional corruption charges at any time we deem fit,” a PCB official told ESPNcricinfo.Jamshed lives with his British-born wife – who during these interviews often acted as his interpreter – in Birmingham, where he too is waiting for the outcome of the NCA investigation. It is expected to conclude in June, with Jamshed either cleared or informed that he will be prosecuted.”We have every confidence in the National Crime Agency,” Jamshed said. “But we have very little confidence in the PCB.”How can we trust them? They have leaked information to the media, they have made up stories about me moving house to avoid the authorities – I’ve been here in Birmingham since January – and the tribunal they have formed to hear my case is made up of former PCB employees. How can that be independent?”Nasir Jamshed has alleged he is being used as a ‘scapegoat’•AFP

The PCB’s anti-corruption code calls for a tribunal to be independent of the board. In this case, it is made up of a former chairman (Tauqir Zia), a former legal advisor (Asghar Haider) and a former employee (Wasim Bari, a former Pakistan captain who has served in a number of different board roles, including as manager of the side as recently as January 2017). None of them are currently working for the PCB, however. Latif has also challenged the constitution of the tribunal, albeit unsuccessfully so far.”I expect the NCA to clear me,” Jamshed said. “But my worry is that I could be cleared by the NCA and found guilty by the PCB. That would still prevent me from playing cricket again. I’ve asked FICA (the international players’ union) for help, but as Pakistan are not affiliated to them, there is not much they can do.”Jamshed is particularly upset by comments made by PCB chairman, Shaharyar Khan, and lawyers working for the board who say he is refusing to return to Pakistan to face charges.”He said I had changed my address and phone number in an attempt not to have any contact with them,” Jamshed said. “But I’ve been here since January. My passport and phone have both been taken off me so I can’t travel. They know that yet they continue to say I’m refusing to return to Pakistan.”The only reason I have been reluctant to meet the PCB in the UK – and yes, they did suggest a London meeting – until now is that I’m not prepared to settle.”It is this refusal to sit down with PCB investigators, who travelled to the UK in April in the hopes of meeting him, that has led to the charges of non-cooperation and obstruction.Jamshed’s explanation of the WhatsApp messages is backed up by a couple of other sources. Jamie Boyle, the captain at Old Elizabethans CC, where Jamshed played in 2016, confirmed to ESPNcricinfo that several members of the club had bought CA bats from him.”Yes, Nasir was selling bats when he was with us,” Boyle said. “There was never any secret in that. I think about four of our team ended up buying one from him.”Naeem Anjum, a first-class cricketer in Pakistan who plays club cricket in England and runs a sports shop, also confirmed he was the one providing bats for Jamshed.”It’s completely legal,” Anjum said. “I obtain a no-objection certificate from the makers and then send bats out depending on the demand. The last time I had an order from Nasir was just before the PSL.”Jamshed alleges that other players have been “coerced” into naming him to save their own careers and that he has been used as a scapegoat by a board keen to be seen as tough on corruption.”The PCB knew I was looking at a future in England,” he said. “I was hoping to play county cricket here. I would still like to after all this has been resolved.”They are so keen to show the world they have cleaned up all the corruption in Pakistan cricket they are looking for a quick resolution to this case. All I can think is that I am seen as expendable.”But some of those other players, such as Khalid Latif, have already raised their concerns about the PCB’s investigation. I’m confident the NCA will clear me and, when they have, I hope the PCB will drop this case.”Jamshed’s main tribunal hearing in which the charges against him will be heard has not begun in earnest; it was due to on May 26, but has been delayed and will resume on June 30.

Villa Could Sign £100k-p/w "Technically Gifted" Gem

Aston Villa are reportedly interested in Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Giovani Lo Celso, as Unai Emery continues to chase his long-term target.

The Spaniard, along with Monchi, has earned praise already this summer for his movements in the transfer window, capturing Youri Tielemans, Pau Torres and Moussa Diaby.

Adding star-studded names has significantly bolstered the Villans’ outlook ahead of the eagerly anticipated 2023/24 campaign, with more signings expected to be made.

What is the market value of Giovani Lo Celso?

Links between Lo Celso and Villa span back to October following Emery’s appointment, when Football Insider named the Spurs midfielder as a potential target for the Spaniard.

Rumours have re-emerged regarding Villa’s chase for the 27-year-old, with reports from Spain claiming that the Midlands side are ‘very interested’ in the talent.

Valued at €18.1m (£15.6m) by FootballTransfers, Monchi could snatch a bargain in a move for the Argentine, who cost Spurs around £42m in total following an initial £15m loan fee before signing permanently in 2020.

How good is Giovani Lo Celso?

Although life in the Premier League hasn’t gone as anticipated for the 27-year-old star so far, Villa could hand the midfielder a second lease on life and a chance at redemption following his struggle at Spurs.

Despite venturing on loan to Villarreal, Lo Celso managed to show glimpses of his talent in north London, seeing him hailed as “technically gifted” by former teammate Harry Winks.

Across 84 appearances for Tottenham, the Rosario-born gem only managed to score eight times and register six assists playing in central midfield, as he struggled to adapt to the method of play at the club.

There’s far more to the midfielder’s talents than his presence in the final third, making him a potentially positive capture for Villa, considering Emery’s free-flowing style of play in the middle of the park, and the quality of those already in the squad.

The signing of Tielemans could be an exciting prospect for the Villans should Lo Celso follow suit and arrive in the Midlands, with the club potentially obtaining two players expertly progressive in nature.

As per FBref, the Villa target averaged a monstrous 7.75 progressive passes per 90 over the past year, ranking him in the top 10% of midfielders in this area in Europe's top five leagues.

Like the Argentine, Tielemans showed a high rate of progressive passes with an average of 6.95 per 90 in the Premier League last term for Leicester City, making the pair a positive outlet to have in midfield to dictate the state of play ahead of them.

Averaging an impressive 2.48 key passes per 90 in La Liga last season, the 27-year-old could be a strong addition to take a more advanced central role alongside the Belgian, arming Emery with added creativity for the benefit of those around him.

Having once been hailed as a “phenomenon” by former Anderlecht star Par Zetterberg, Tielemans is a firm presence to have in the middle of the park and could be the perfect figure to partner Lo Celso with the two possessing an innate eye for a pass.

The Spaniard has wanted the £100k-per-week Spurs outsider for a while, and could finally land his expertise this summer in a move that could further Villa’s claim to progression alongside other summer captures.

Hasan Ali stars as Pakistan crush England to reach final

England’s quest to secure their first trophy in a 50-over global tournament came to grief in emphatic fashion in Cardiff as Pakistan surged into the final of the Champions Trophy with masterful unpredictability

The Report by David Hopps14-Jun-2017

Agarkar: Pakistan were the better team on the day

England’s quest to secure their first trophy in a 50-over global tournament came to grief in emphatic fashion in Cardiff as Pakistan surged into the final of the Champions Trophy with masterful unpredictability, completing a thumping win by eight wickets with nearly 13 overs to spare.Central to Pakistan’s victory was their commendable vigour and skill with the ball on a dry, abrasive surface to dismiss England for only 211. A re-used pitch was the one on which Pakistan had earned their semi-final spot by edging out Sri Lanka in frenzied fashion on Monday, and it might have been designed for them. This time, there were no alarms with the bat as both their wickets and nerves remained intact.England, who have been routine collectors of 300-plus scores since the last World Cup, have rarely looked as subservient since they adopted a more daring brand of one-day cricket largely fought out on more batsman-friendly surfaces. They became becalmed with the bat as Pakistan’s pace attack found enough reverse swing to be perpetually dangerous, and they did not match their opponent’s standard when it was their own turn to bowl.Neither should this England defeat be remotely put down to an inability to cope with the demands of the occasion, because interest in this tournament on their own shores has been manageable, disappointingly so. They tried to adapt to conditions but came up short. Morgan’s measured comment that they “did not prepare for a used wicket” was revealing. They were simply outplayed. All six Pakistan bowlers acquitted themselves impressively, backed up by combative fielding and the desire of their wicketkeeper-captain, Sarfraz Ahmed, to maintain an attacking intent.Hasan Ali, a fist-pumping, arm-outstretching inspiration, finished with 3 for 35 and his 10 wickets make him the leading wicket-taker in the tournament – the face of Pakistan’s success. He continued to sweet-talk the Kookaburra ball into occasional responses – a reluctant grunt of reverse here, a wink of compliance there. Junaid Khan was another impressive suitor.Pakistan had been dealt a potentially grievous blow before the toss when Mohammad Amir, their attack leader, was ruled out of the match with a back spasm. However, Rumman Raees, his reputation enhanced in the Pakistan Super League, put in a solid shift of left-arm fast-medium on his ODI debut. Imad Wasim’s left-arm slows and the leg spin of the recalled Shadab Khan also contained England’s ambitions on a dry, used surface, with the seasoned Mohammad Hafeez equally hard to combat.Pakistan’s chase was a breeze, and Fakhar Zaman’s exuberant innings – 57 from 58 balls – was an unfastened kite that swirled around unpredictably in that breeze. An opening stand of 118 in 21 overs made necessary early inroads into England’s total. While Azhar progressed intelligently to 76, Fakhar pretty much did what he liked.Fakhar, a former navy trainee who is in his first ODI series, claimed his second successive half-century in a do-or-die game. England’s quicks pounded the middle of the pitch in an obsessive belief that they could dismiss him with the short ball. Their conviction was understandable because it was a seat-of-the-pants innings from the moment he top-edged the second ball he faced, from Mark Wood, over fine leg for six. Another flew in the same direction off the helmet. An on-the-charge pull against Jake Ball was another variation.By the time England reviewed for a supposed catch behind the wicket, Fakhar had his fifty and one suspected that Wood, back for a second spell, wanted the replay because of sheer aggravation. It showed, as Fakhar knew it would, that the ball had brushed his hip. He fell in the next over, deceived by Adil Rashid’s googly as he made room to blaze him over the off-side to be stumped by Buttler.2:35

Agarkar: Pakistan bowlers’ lengths made the difference

Azhar Ali increasingly looks a class act. Little troubled him until he charged a slower ball from Ball and bottom-edged it into his stumps. There is talk of a slight calf strain and Pakistan need him in the final. Mohammad Hafeez, who should have been stumped by Buttler off Rashid, sparked celebrations by pulling a long hop from Stokes to the boundary. Stokes’ 3.1 overs disappeared for 38 – an off-colour display that epitomised England’s collective lethargy.Such a towelling was not remotely signalled as noon approached. That England reached 80 for 1 midway through the 17th over was contentment enough. It was at this stage that Jonny Bairstow – summoned in preference to the woefully out-of-touch Jason Roy, who had made 52 in his last eight knocks – fell for 43 from 57 balls. Joe Root and Eoin Morgan also got starts (not that Morgan ever settled), but it was Stokes’ careworn innings that was most revealing.Stokes had pummelled Australia at The Oval to knock them out of the tournament, but he failed to hit a boundary in scraping 34 from 64 balls before he struck a slower off-cutter from Hasan straight up in the air 15 balls from the end. It felt like hard work: he might have been batting in dense air. England hit only 15 boundaries, only one in the last 11 overs – and that was an edge.Pakistan restricted England despite the sensation that luck was siding with the home side. Three reviews fell in their favour in the first half of the innings. Bairstow might have fallen lbw second ball, for nought. But Bairstow survived against Junaid by virtue of umpire’s call and a plentiful supply of leg-side whips gave England the sort of start they had been lacking all summer.Bairstow was dropped twice, too, on 27, when Azhar failed to cling to a tough, leaping catch above his head, and again on 42 when he swiped at a wide one from Shadab and another head-high chance this time evaded Babar at slip. Generally, however, Pakistan’s outfielding was at the top of its game.Alex Hales overturned his dismissal, lbw to Raees on 9, but failed to prosper as the same bowler defeated his advance down the pitch courtesy of a catch at short extra cover. Morgan also benefited from a review, on 19, rightly confident that the deflection when he reverse-swept Shadab would prove to have come off his forearm. If Bairstow had become anxious at England’s slowing progress, it was nothing compared to the disquiet in the second half of the innings as the ball softened and reverse swing became evident. It has been a while since Morgan allowed himself such a prolonged period of assessment, a succession of defensive pushes at deliveries angled into him symbolising England’s unease.Joe Root was England’s fall-back on such a surface and he proceeded to 46 from 56 balls with a succession of learned pushes that were beyond his team-mates – 30 singles in all. He took painkillers in case his back played up, but fell cutting when Shadab summoned a little extra pace and bounce.Morgan, fortunate not to be bowled by Hafeez when he tried to pull early in the innings, eventually charged at Hasan in desperation and the ball, not just wide but moving wider, was edged into the wicketkeeper’s hands. Jos Buttler soon followed, Junaid angling the ball across him.As Stokes laboured, nobody else filled him with hope. Moeen Ali departed to a top-edged pull against Junaid, excellently held on the run by Fakhar at deep square leg. Rashid suffered a hangdog run-out after being struck on the pad by a yorker. England’s bowlers hoped they would be happier with a ball in their hands. Instead, the truth was far less palatable.

St Lucia Stars have named New Zealand’s Jesse Ryder and Mitchell McClenaghan as replacements for David Miller and Lasith Malinga respectively, for the upcoming edition of the Caribbean Premier League, which begins on August 4. While Miller is likely to join South Africa A for their two four-day matches against India A, Malinga, who has been having injury troubles lately, might feature in the limited-overs series against India.Ryder played his last competitive game in March, scoring an unbeaten 109 in the second innings to take Central Districts to a win against Canterbury. The all-rounder, whose international career has been regularly interrupted by a spate of alcohol-related issues, last appeared for New Zealand in 2014. He has, however, been named in New Zealand’s 12-man squad for the Indoor Cricket World Cup in Dubai, which begins in September this year. He averages 26.13 in 133 T20s and strikes at 147.02.McClenaghan, the left-arm fast bowler, played a key role in Mumbai Indians’ successful IPL campaign this year, taking 19 wickets to finish as the team’s second-highest wicket-taker. McClenaghan has made 28 T20I appearances, taking 30 wickets at an average of 25.26.Speaking about the new signings, Manan Pandya of the St Lucia Stars franchise said: “Both Jesse and Mitchell are world-class players who will bring firepower to the squad in terms of both batting and bowling. We are sure that these new Stars will shine as we work on bringing home our first Hero CPL title.”
