Wet conditions and alleged negligence of the ground staff were blamed for the first day of the fixture between Lahore Whites and Karachi Whites being called off at the LCCA ground

With the Quaid-e-Azam trophy’s hectic schedule beginning to take a toll on the pitches, the Lahore City Cricket Association (LCCA) ground was unable to get the track ready in time for the seventh round of the premier national first-class championship. The venue, which is situated next to the Gaddafi Stadium, was set to host the match between Lahore Whites and Karachi Whites, but due to wet conditions and alleged negligence of the ground staff, the day’s play was called off without a ball being bowled.The LCCA formed a committee headed by former Test umpire Mian Aslam to inquire into the pitch controversy. The pitch, along with the field within the circle, was unplayable due to excessive dampness as it wasn’t handed over to the match officials before the toss. The groundsmen were seen rolling the pitch at the time of toss, and after various inspections, the ground remained unplayable before the day was called off.It doesn’t help that the city has been gripped by smog for the last four days, with the sun nowhere to be seen. Even so, another first-class game between Lahore Blues and Islamabad began on time at the Gaddafi Stadium, even though the contest was disrupted after the second session due to bad light. The game saw 59 overs bowled on the opening day, with Islamabad on 25 for 1, having dismissed Lahore Blues for 220.The LCCA administration, in its preliminary inquiry about the pitch, found the curator guilty of negligence, while PCB awaits the match referee Aziz ur Rehman’s report before taking any action. This is the second complaint about the venue this season after former Pakistan captain Misbah-ul- Haq had criticised the “underprepared pitch” and questioned the quality of pitches after the fourth round at LCCA.”I think it is seriously negligent to allow this state of affairs with the premier first-class tournament of the country,” Aslam told ESPNcricinfo. “I visited the ground in the later hours of the day and was surprised to see the match being called off due to wet conditions. The venue has been idle since October 24, and yet they are not able to prepare it on time. I am getting a lot of information at this stage which I cannot reveal, but what I can say at this stage is that it’s a serious blunder and someone has to take responsibility for it.”

The £60k-per-week Palace gem has just one season of Premier League football behind him, yet Klopp clearly sees enough to launch a move to lure him to the north-west.

How good is Cheick Doucoure?

Although a mass midfield exodus was perhaps expected with a few players out of contract, to see Henderson depart after 12 years with the club was a major surprise.

The Englishman played a key role during their success between 2018 and 2022, captaining the side to a Premier League title, Champions League crown and a handful of other trophies as the Reds emerged out of the shadows that had plagued them for years.

The 33-year-old made nearly 500 appearances for the Anfield outfit, and although he started just 23 league matches last season, Klopp could still have counted on his experience for the 2023/24 campaign.

A move for Doucoure could certainly alleviate the blow of losing the 77-cap England international, especially with his wonderful debut season in England.

The 23-year-old even won the Player of the Year Award for his 2022/23 performances and there is no doubt he could be an ideal heir to Henderson.

The Mali international not only made more tackles per game than Henderson (2.3 v 0.9) last term, but also made more interceptions (1.6 v 0.6) and won possession more often (0.7 v 0.4) per game than the former Liverpool star in the league.

This suggests he could be much better at winning the ball back in the heart of the midfield, while his defensive abilities would allow others to thrive in a more advanced role.

Indeed, he ranked in the top 6% when compared to positional peers across Europe’s big five leagues for interceptions per 90 (1.73), while he even showcased his ability to take on defenders by ranking in the top 5% for his take-ons per 90 success rate (71.4%, as per FBref).

Lauded by former boss Patrick Vieira for being “the complete holding midfielder”, it’s evident that Doucoure belongs at a more esteemed club, and Klopp should be tying up a deal as quickly as possible.

So much of a turning point, that Overton has a good chance of forcing his way into the Test team over the next few days. While he isn’t the quickest – his natural pace would probably be in the mid to low 80s mph – he has a good range of skills, gains sharp bounce from his height and has the ability to deliver a sharper spell when required. Crucially, despite failing to make a half-century in the 2017 season, he also offers more with the bat than Jake Ball – his rival for the fourth seamer’s spot – and he has developed into a decent slip catcher off the spin bowlers at Somerset. With Ben Stokes absent, that remains another hole for England to fill.”I try and work on my slip catching as much as possible,” Overton said. “Someone has got to field there. I’ll put my hand up if I have to.”My batting is one thing that maybe I see where I have an edge over the others. Growing up, I always wanted to be an allrounder. I’ve still got that skill with the bat so I’ll make sure I use the coaches here to get the most out of my batting and score a few runs if I play.”But for injury to his twin, Jamie, it is entirely possible both brothers could have made the tour. Callum Ferguson has signed up with Sydney Thunder for the next three seasons of the Big Bash League, ending his three-year term with the Melbourne Renegades.Ferguson, who celebrated his 33rd birthday on Tuesday, has played 76 T20s, scoring 1373 runs at an average of 22.50. He made his debut for Australia in 2009 but injury and poor form have kept him from being a regular in international cricket. Ferguson is a veteran of the domestic scene, though, and he has been in form this season. He assisted South Australia to the final of the JLT One-Day Cup, scoring 73 and 169 in the process, and, earlier this month, he struck 182 not out against Victoria in the Sheffield Shield.Ferguson, who has also played for Adelaide Strikers as well in the BBL, joins a Thunder squad full of familiar faces. “I’ve played with Shane Watson, Ben Rohrer and Aiden Blizzard,” he said. “There’s a few guys who I’ve had a really good time playing with or against in the past and I’ve had really good dealings with all of them.”There’s a lot of things that attracted me to Sydney Thunder. Até os 20 minutos de jogo, os dois times tinham finalizado apenas 3 vezes (Brusque duas e o Ceará uma). O Quadricolor foi quem levou mais perigo. Airton cruzou, Marco Antônio subiu mais que todo mundo, mas não conseguiu cabecear da forma correta.

Os dois times faziam um jogo disputado, mas oportunidades não estavam sendo criadas.

E quando tudo indicava que a etapa inicial acabaria sem gols, o Vozão foi lá e conseguiu inaugurar o marcador. Fernando Sobral recebeu a bola e serviu Leandro Carvalho. O meia pegou de primeira e inaugurou o marcador: 1 a 0.

O time Brusque voltou para etapa complementar decidido a fazer o gol de empate, só esqueceu de combinar com o Ceará, que quase ampliou. Rafael Sobis arriscou da entrada da área e acertou o travessão. No rebote, Leandro Carvalho chutou para fora.

Apesar do susto, o Quadricolor não se amedrontou e foi para cima do Vozão. Thiago Alagoano e Rodolfo Potiguar tiveram boas oportunidades, mas Fernando Prass conseguiu evitar o gol nos dois lances.

O Brusque mandava no jogo ter marcado em outra chance de gol, mas o chute de Rodolfo Potiguar passou raspando a trave do goleiro Fernando Prass e não entrou.

O Quadricolor martelava em busca do empate, mas o Ceará não estava morto e conseguia criar chances no contra-ataque. Em uma delas, Fernando Sobral recebeu ótimo passe e entrou cara a cara com o goleiro, mas na tentativa de encobrir o goleiro, ele pegou muito forte na bola e jogando fora uma oportunidade de ouro.

No final do jogo, o time Brusque foi para o tudo ou nada. Em cobrança de escanteio, todo mundo foi para área adversária em busca do empate e o Vozão acabou marcando no contra-ataque. Vina recebeu a bola, partiu em velocidade, driblou o goleiro e ampliou o placar: 2 a 0.

Have Wolves done enough business?

Wanderers have had a tumultuous summer in many ways, considering Julen Lopetegui quit his job as manager just before the start of the season.

The Spaniard was swiftly replaced by Gary O'Neil, who has made a solid start to life in charge, seeing his side play well at Manchester United in a 1-0 defeat, before winning 1-0 away to Everton on Saturday afternoon, with a heavy defeat at home to Brighton in between.

In terms of signings, the likes of Matheus Cunha and Boubacar Traore have come in on permanent deals, as well as former right-back Matt Doherty on a free transfer alongside back up goalkeeper Tom King. It could be argued that more business is required between now and deadline day next Friday, however, in terms of making Wolves' squad as strong as possible and avoiding a relegation battle in the process.

Will Wolves sign Aaron Wan-Bissaka?

According to Football Insider, United right-back Aaron Wan-Bissaka could potentially join Wolves in a swap deal that would see Nelson Semedo head to Old Trafford, with the Red Devils asking about a transfer.

"Man United have asked Wolves about a swap deal involving Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Nelson Semedo, sources have told Football Insider. The Premier League giants are in the market for an attacking full-back on the right side of their defence and have been in touch with the Midlands club about potentially signing Semedo.

"With Wolves running out of time to secure a replacement for the 29-year-old, United have suggested a swap between the Portuguese and Wan-Bissaka. The 25-year-old has slipped down the United pecking order and Erik ten Hag wants to replace him with a right-back who is more effective going forward."

This may prove to be a tricky decision for Wolves, who would surely want to keep hold of Semedo moving forward, considering he has largely been a reliable performer since arriving from Barcelona back in 2020, making 107 appearances in total.

The Portuguese turns 30 later this year, though, so you could say that he isn't viewed as a long-term option, and Wan-Bissaka could bring plenty of positives to Wanderers' team.

Granted, the United man isn't necessarily the most naturally-gifted of footballers in an attacking sense – he has only scored twice in 163 matches for the Red Devils – but he is renowned for his defensive ability, averaging two tackles, interceptions and clearances apiece in the Premier League so far this season.

Micky Gray has described Wan-Bissaka as "absolutely fantastic" in the past, and at 25, he is still a relatively young player, so he could come in as a younger alternative to Semedo, further growing as a player in the next four or five years or so.

The idea of Wan-Bissaka coming in for Semedo could be one to watch, given the qualities the United man possesses, so it will be interesting to see what Wolves' response is to Manchester United's proposal.
