Leeds United could lose “quality” prospect in permanent deal for tiny fee

Leeds United could now be set to lose a rising star for a minimal fee due to a surprising clause in his loan deal, according to recent reports.

Latest Leeds United news…

Last weekend, Leeds United earned a deserved three points against Bristol City at Elland Road as goals from Dan James and Joel Piroe moved the Whites up to fifth place in the Sky Bet Championship standings.

Speaking to Leeds United's official website after the game, boss Daniel Farke signalled his delight at his side being able to record a second victory in quick succession, as he stated: "I can’t argue against the three points, it is a good three points for us and leaves us in a good situation. It’s the first time in a while we are there with back-to-back wins in the league, which is always important and it’s our third home win in a row."

He then added: "We have been in really good shape in September and October, apart from the first half at Southampton, we were terrific and have put ourselves in a good position."

Now, Farke's men will jet off to all corners of the world on international duty, while Charlie Cresswell, Mateo Joseph and Darko Gyabi have been drafted in to feature for England's youth squads. Cresswell will join up with England's Under-21 set-up, which former Everton midfielder Lee Carsley heads up; meanwhile, Joseph and Gyabi have been included at Under-20 level.

Archie Gray has also been handed a call-up to the England Under-19 side and will feature in their EURO qualifying double header against Wales and Austria.

Leeds United return to action on October 21st when they travel to Carrow Road to face Norwich City in what will be another opportunity to prolong their positive start to the campaign.

Sam Greenwood transfer update

According to The Athletic, delivering a transfer update on Sam Greenwood, the attacking prospect could actually leave Leeds for a tiny fee due to a surprise clause in his loan deal at Middlesbrough, which has given Boro the option to pick up the 21-year-old on a permanent basis for just £1.5 million at the end of 2023/24.

Initially, it was believed that Greenwood had headed to the Riverside Stadium on loan with no option to buy presents in his agreement; however, he could now have the chance to leave Elland Road for good on what looks like a really good deal for Boro.

Sunderland-born Greenwood has made an impressive start to life at Middlesbrough since joining in the summer transfer window, netting one goal in his opening six appearances (Greenwood statistics – Transfermarkt).

His solitary strike came this past weekend in Boro's 4-0 victory vs Sunderland at the Stadium of Light, in a game in which he earned a Sofascore match rating of 7.5 and won a huge 11 out of the 15 ground duels he contested.

Labelled "quality" by pundit Ally McCoist, Greenwood is certainly a bright young talent, but his future could now lie away from Yorkshire following these latest developments.

Alastair Cook warns England careers are on the line amid Test slump

He has urged his team-mates to “stick together” after the nine-wicket defeat at Lord’s which has led to heavy criticism

Alastair Cook has warned members of the England dressing room will “be looking for other employment” if they are unable to reverse their recent run of form.Cook, who will break Allan Border’s record for the most consecutive Tests when he takes the field in Leeds on Friday, accepts that England are “not playing well” at present and knows they have lost their last three Tests at Headingley. But he has urged his colleagues to “stick together” and “not carry the negatives from the first Test with us to Headingley.””We need to play better,” Cook said in his column. “Test futures are on the line.”It’s never great when you lose, even more so playing the way we did at Lord’s. It’s a frustrating time for us at the moment as a side; we’re not playing well.”If you want to play cricket for England, you’ve got to deliver, otherwise we’ll be looking for other employment. That’s the nature of the beast and, fundamentally, we’re not producing out in the middle.”But we have to stick together as a group. The last thing you can do is play the blame game, and the trick is now to not carry the negatives from the first Test with us to Headingley.”Again, that’s another thing easier said than done. But clearly we are not going to lose every game of cricket ever, it is going to turn around at some stage, and it’s down to us to do that. While disappointed for Mark Stoneman, who was dropped after the Lord’s Test, Cook expressed confidence in his replacement, Keaton Jennings.”It’s tough on Mark Stoneman,” Cook said. “It’s horrible. Playing for England is these guys’ dreams, so it’s not nice seeing people dropped. I spoke to him on Monday; he was obviously disappointed, as you’d expect, but he has to now go away, score runs and look at areas in which he can improve his game.”It gives Keaton a great opportunity, and we just need people to grab these opportunities with both hands and to start pushing this side forward, like Jos Buttler and Dom Bess – on debut – did at Lord’s.”He is a very level-headed guy and seems very suited to Test level, in terms of his mental approach. He got a hundred on debut, which shows he can play, but then against a good South African side last summer things just didn’t quite go his way.”

Offspinner Matt Carter impresses again as Nottinghamshire take control

After dismissing the reigning champions for 206 to lead by 174 runs on first innings, Notts decided against enforcing the follow-on

ECB Reporters Network21-Jun-20181:44

Surrey’s Patel reignites the title race

ScorecardA dominant performance with bat and ball over two days carried Nottinghamshire into a strong position to end a run of back-to-back Specsavers County Championship defeats and leapfrog opponents Essex in the table. However, after dismissing the reigning champions for 206 to lead by 174 runs on first innings, Notts decided against enforcing the follow-on. By the close at Chelmsford, their advantage had been extended to 209 in 12 overs in the evening sun, though they lost captain Chris Nash to a catch behind from a tentative prod to Matt Quinn.Matt Carter, the 22-year-old offspin bowler, spun the web that led to Essex’s downfall inside two sessions with 4 for 34 from 15.3 overs. He kept his nerve when he briefly came under heavy artillery from Ravi Bopara, who stood head and shoulders above the carnage before becoming Carter’s second victim.Bopara recorded his second Championship half-century of the season, finishing on 69 from 89 balls, with nine fours and one six. Without his efforts Essex would not have come within 25 of the follow-on target as he led the relative recovery from 26 for 3.It started badly for Essex in their response to Notts’ 380. Varun Chopra scratched around for 21 balls before he played across the line to depart lbw for a duck, the first of Luke Fletcher’s 4 for 43. Tom Westley, standing in as captain in the absence of the suspended Ryan ten Doeschate, followed straight after lunch, pinned on his crease by Matt Milnes.Dan Lawrence had looked uncomfortable during his 18-ball stay for a single before he aimed to play through midwicket, but produced a leading edge to Chris Nash at gully.Alastair Cook and Bopara repaired some of the damage in a fourth-wicket stand of 54 in 18 overs. Bopara outscored his partner by more than two to one, caressing Fletcher through extra cover for four and adding a straight boundary in the same over. After gloriously square-cutting Harry Gurney for his sixth four, Cook edged the one-time England bowler to second slip where the ubiquitous Carter took the catch at the second attempt. Cook’s 33 came off 93 balls.Bopara reached his half-century when he pushed a quick single to mid-off from his 69th ball. That, though, was the prelude to three wickets going down in 15 balls either side of tea. Adam Wheater had looked untroubled in crafting 24 from 31 balls before edging a straight lifter and giving Tom Moores a catch behind the stnmps.Harmer went to the last ball before tea, lbw to Carter without scoring, at which point Essex were still 106 adrift of the follow-on target with four wickets left. That was three wickets left when Coles was lbw to a delivery from Fletcher that beat his defensive push.At 130 for 7, Bopara decided to put caution to the wind and lofted Carter for six in an over that went for 15. It dented the spinner’s figures, which had stood at 7-5-5-1 at its start. But Carter had the last laugh, Bopara taking a wild swing and getting a bottom edge and dragging the ball on to the stumps, via a pad.Neil Wagner picked up Bopara’s mantle, taking 21 from a Gurney over, including sixes off successive balls, and added a third off Carter before top-edging to Fletcher at point. His 37 came off just 23 balls, and also contained four fours. However, it was left to Quinn to bring up an unexpected batting point for passing 200 with a lofted four off Patel before he was caught at deep midwicket. At the start of the day, the last four Notts wickets added 69 crucial runs before Harmer closed the innings with his fourth wicket at a personal cost of 78.Notts lost Moores to the third ball of the day when Jamie Porter had him caught behind for his overnight 28. Harmer claimed his third victim when Carter swung him towards the cow corner boundary where Wagner took a comfortable catch. But the Notts tail made hay against some off-key bowling and chalked up their fourth batting point with five balls to spare. Fletcher launched a six next ball to celebrate and then kept out the rest of Harmer’s over to deny Essex a third bowling point.Fletcher frustrated Essex for 50 balls for his 19. He was spilled to a difficult chance at backward point by a diving Chopra, but next ball spooned Wagner to Coles at mid-on. Milnes was the last man to depart for 22, a carbon-copy of Carter’s dismissal.

Everton: "Awful" £27m flop has outscored every Toffees player since leaving

Everton's strikers so far this season haven't set the world alight with their finishing, Dominic Calvert-Lewin has two goals to his name in the league after eight games whilst new attackers Beto and Chermiti have yet to score in the Premier League so far.

It's led to the Toffees struggling early on under Sean Dyche, a lack of clinical finishing versus Luton Town at Goodison Park recently meant the visiting Hatters grew in confidence and picked up a 2-1 victory despite Everton registering 23 shots on goal over the 90 minutes.

Everton'sDominicCalvert-Lewin

Strikers disappointing in an Everton jersey isn't unique to the Toffees situation in the present though, the Merseysiders signing one particular dud up front during the 2017-18 season that severely disappointed punters.

When did Everton sign Cenk Tosun?

Cenk Tosun arrived under the tenure of Sam Allardyce, signing for the Toffees in January 2018 for a reported £27 million fee, as per Sky Sports.

At the time, it looked as if Everton had purchased a clinical forward who was ready for the demands of top-flight English football – his goal return for Beskitas in Turkey was deadly, scoring 20 goals from 33 appearances in his final full campaign for the Black Eagles.

The Turkish striker wouldn't score his first goal for his new employers until March however when relocating to England, netting his first goal for the Toffees away at Burnley in a slim 2-1 defeat.

This would see the experienced marksman go on a mini purple patch for the Blues, scoring three goals in his next two appearances for the club versus Brighton and Stoke City with a double against the Potters ensuring Allardyce's side won the tight contest 2-1.

Unfortunately for Tosun, his goals would dry up after.

He would only go on to score another five in the Premier League for Everton before he was moved back to his native Turkey, leading to Guardian journalist Aaron Sharp branding him as "awful" and crying out for central defender Yerry Mina to play up front instead of the 6 foot dud.

Thankfully for the latter man, he has managed to turn his career around since departing Merseyside.

Where is Cenk Tosun now?

Tosun would move back to Turkey after his disastrous couple of seasons at Goodison Park, even a loan spell with Crystal Palace away from the Toffees couldn't kickstart his Premier League career again – managing a solitary goal with the Eagles from a forgettable temporary switch.

He would return to his best with former club Beskitas, picking up from where he left off as a clinical finisher in the Süper Lig.

cenk-tosun-everton-transfer-besiktas-allardyce-waste-loan

He now has 86 goals from 190 appearances with the Turkish club across his various spells, outscoring the likes of Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Neal Maupay and others who have slotted into the Blues attack since Tosun's exit.

It could well be that Tosun thrives surrounded by home comforts, netting 15 goals last season for the Istanbul outfit as they finished in a respectable 3rd spot in the league.

On the contrary, Everton's main man Calvert-Lewin managed a meagre two goals during the entire 2022-23 Premier League season, while the club's leading scorer in the competition was Dwight McNeil with just seven goals.

Dyche and co likely could have benefitted from a prolific talent like Tosun last term, although the 32-year-old will himself be delighted that he's been able to shrug off his nightmare spell with the Toffees and become a star man for Besiktas once more.

Lewis Gregory's stunning all-round display overwhelms Middlesex

Peter Trego also played a key role with Somerset with 60 off 31 balls after Tom Barber had knocked over three quick wickets

ECB Reporters Network29-Jul-2018

Lewis Gregory played all manner of shots•Getty Images

ScorecardElectrifying half-centuries from Peter Trego and Lewis Gregory led Somerset to a total of 229 for 6 and a 38-run Vitality Blast win over Middlesex under the DLS system at Taunton.Trego smashed 60 off 31 balls, including 24 off an over from Ashton Agar, to relaunch his side’s innings after left-arm seamer Tom Barber had taken three wickets in an over to reduce them to 29 for 3.Skipper Gregory then took up the attack with an even more destructive 62 off 28 deliveries, receiving good support from Corey Anderson (41 not out) as the Middlesex bowlers were dispatched to all parts of the ground. In reply, the shellshocked visitors had made 88 for 4 from ten overs when rain interrupted their innings for the second time. They faced a revised target of 213 from 18 overs, with a required run-rate of around 16 an over, and, despite a 29-ball fifty from Stevie Eskinazi, fell well short at 174 for 6.After losing the toss and making a bright start, Somerset looked to have slipped into trouble when Barber, generating good pace, removed Steve Davies, Johann Myburgh and James Hildreth in the third over of the innings. But Trego and Tom Abell set about rectifying the damage with panache, Trego leading the way with seven fours and three sixes in a typically savage onslaught before falling in the 11th over with the total advanced to 112.Abell followed for a comparatively sedate 31, but the importance of his stand with Trego was emphasised when Gregory and Anderson had the freedom to cut loose from the start of their innings.Gregory was in magnificent form, striking eight fours and four sixes, and outshining the powerful Anderson, who still managed to contribute three sixes in his 24-ball innings.Max Waller began the Middlesex reply with a wicket-maiden, the legspinner having Max Holden caught at extra cover for a duck.Gregory then cemented his claim to Man-of-the-Match by dismissing Nick Gubbins and Eoin Morgan in his first two overs as their side reached 50 for 3 at the end of the six-over Powerplay, actually one ahead of Somerset at the same stage.Paul Stirling had looked the one early batsman capable of making a game of it before he fell for 30 to a sensational boundary catch by Jamie Overton, catching the ball, releasing it as he fell back over the rope and re-entering the playing area to grab it.Just before the rain first arrived, with Middlesex 74 for 4, a spectator was struck by a six from Eskinasi off Roelof van der Merwe. Medical staff were quickly on the scene and as the players looked on with obvious concern the drizzle increased and sent them to the dressing rooms. After a short delay the game resumed, only to be interrupted again after a couple of overs by a heavier downpour. The final session saw Gregory remove John Simpson for 29 and Eskinazi for a valiant 55 off 32 balls, for figures of 4 for 28.
