Geoff Cook, Durham’s long-standing director of cricket, is to step down from his role at the end of the season as part of a staff restructure.Cook’s departure comes hot on the heels of the retirement of Paul Collingwood, the club’s longest-serving player, who was one of a raft of names whom Cook was instrumental in developing in his 27 years of service. After a 19-year county career with Northamptonshire, Cook returned to his native north-east in 1991 to help Durham make the transition to first-class cricket. He was appointed as Head Coach in 2007 and immediately guided the club to the Friends Provident Trophy, the first of a run of trophies that would include back-to-back Championship wins in 2008 and 2009.In 2013, he was forced to take time away from the game after suffering a heart attack while out jogging, but returned to the club in time to take part in their title celebrations after they had wrapped up their third Championship win in six seasons.Cook won seven Test caps as an opening batsman between 1982 and 1983. However, his greatest legacy is the number of outstanding players who have made their way through the county academy and, not only represented Durham, but gone on to become key players for England. In addition to Collingwood, who made his Durham debut in 1995, Cook was responsible for nurturing the likes of Ben Stokes, Mark Wood, Steve Harmison, Graham Onions and Mark Stoneman. Since the 2005 Ashes, only Nottinghamshire and Yorkshire – two of the most established clubs in the country – have produced more England players.”It comes with a heavy heart that I am leaving my role as Director of Cricket at Durham County Cricket Club but I’m immensely proud of the work we have achieved during my 27-year stay,” Cook said. “It’s been a privilege to work at Durham for so long and the memories will be with me forever.”From establishing ourselves as a first-class county to our back-to-back title wins in 2007 and 2008, and the Championship triumph in 2013 were, alongside many more, the highlights of my career.”There are too many people to thank but I would like to show gratitude to all the players, staff, members and supporters I have worked with and of course my family and friends.”Durham County Cricket Club is a great club and will continue to improve, I’d like to wish them the best of luck going forward.”DCCC Chairman Sir Ian Botham, added: “Geoff is a true legend of the club and his instrumental work has had an immeasurable impact on the success of Durham County Cricket Club.”His efforts in establishing Durham as a first-class county and turning the team from newcomers to a title-winning force will never be forgotten alongside his superb coaching achievements.””I would like to wish him the very best for the future.”

Farke could bench Bamford for Leeds’ 20 y/o "warrior"

Despite starting slowly, Leeds United's Championship season is up and running and Daniel Farke will be delighted with the way that his side have ploughed into third-place after 15 matches.

The engine did falter at the start, however, and as a consequence, Ipswich Town are eight points clear in second, despite five victories from six matches for the Whites.

It was always going to take a while to gel together, though, with a hive of transfer activity occurring at Elland Road across the summer following Leeds' relegation from the Premier League, ending a three-year stay.

Leeds United manager Daniel Farke.

Despite losing the likes of Jack Harrison, Rodrigo and Tyler Adams (not an exhaustive list), the Yorkshire club rebuilt under Farke's command, with Joel Piroe, Ethan Ampadu, Glen Kamara and co all bolstering the fold, with stars such as Wilfried Gnonto and Georginio Rutter retained.

For all of the talented acquisitions, Farke will be eager to utilise the club's excellent youth influx and cherry-pick the best options to improve the performances; this has already been evidenced through the likes of 17-year-old Archie Gray, who is currently subject to £40m transfer attention from Liverpool.

There is more to come, and based on the short but sweet impression that Mateo Joseph has made this season, he might be next in line to break into the first-team.

Mateo Joseph's youth statistics

Born in Santander, Spain, Joseph enjoyed prolific success with Racing Santander as a youth before joining Espanyol in 2017, scoring 14 goals from 21 appearances across the 2021/22 campaign and earning the attention of Leeds, who completed the signing of the player in January 2022 for an undisclosed fee.

Leeds forward Mateo Joseph.

Considered a player with "great potential' by Javier Rodriguez Alonso, Joseph has now plundered 20 goals and three assists from 33 outings for Leeds' development sides, having also made six senior displays – including three appearances in the Premier League – last season.

This year, after a productive pre-season, Joseph has only featured twice in the Premier League 2 but has clinched two goals and an assist from as many matches.

The eight-cap England U20 international has also found a place on the bench in the Championship on two occasions, though he is still awaiting his first senior showing of the campaign.

His rate of scoring this term surpasses that of Patrick Bamford, with the long-time Leeds player perhaps at a crossroads in his career at the club, and could find that he is left behind as Farke's engine churns forward.

Why Mateo Joseph should replace Patrick Bamford

Bamford has completed 158 appearances for United, scoring 51 goals, and was instrumental in guiding them to the Premier League and cementing a spot in the division, but his past few campaigns have been blighted by injury and a loss of form.

Impressed by the rising star's talent, Leeds' U21 manager Michael Skubala said: "He’s in a good place, he’s scoring goals, he’s a character, but he still needs to keep working hard. His finishing ability is top-drawer. He’s been training like a warrior and you can see that in his game."

Such attributes are glowing examples of why he would succeed under Farke's wing at senior level, and it might indeed be wise to promote him to the first team with regularity in the place of Bamford, whose best days at the outfit might now be behind him.

Bamford has only featured seven times this season, though he was absent for the start of the campaign due to a hamstring injury, but having yet to receive a starting berth and score his first goal, the 30-year-old is looking increasingly expendable, with Joel Piroe and Georginio Rutter both ahead in the pecking order.

The one-cap England international did have the opportunity to put his side ahead several weeks ago against Stoke City in the second tier but skied his penalty over the bar.

The £70k-per-week striker still ranks among the top 11% of forwards for interceptions per 90, as per FBref, but it appears that his ship has sailed and his lack of minutes over the past several seasons could inhibit him from cementing a regular starting spot with Leeds once again.

With Joseph's dynamic skills and a prolific edge to perfectly complement the existing forwards, Bamford might find that he is playing his last year at the side, with priority handed to a player who could grow into a first-class phenom in the future.

The 20-year-old boasts 18 goals from just 28 games in the Premier League 2, and while the professional level is a whole other ballpark, he possesses the innate talent to wedge his way into Farke's plans.

Ultimately, the goal at Elland Road is to craft a campaign that will open the door to the top flight once again, and with the endeavours in the Championship confirming the squad's capability of securing a spot either in the automatics or in the play-offs, this is more than attainable.

The crux of Leeds' demise last year stemmed from the lack of stability, the wayward transfer activity, and the absence of cohesion on the pitch; now, Farke has instilled a winning mentality and will look to maintain that into the new year, and indeed beyond.

Leeds striker Patrick Bamford.

Bamford has not really contributed to this budding revival and it is hard to imagine that he will play a central role in the 2024/25 Premier League season, should Leeds secure promotion.

With Piroe and Rutter among the Whites' thriving forwards, Joseph would be an excellent addition to complement their talents and serve as an understudy.

The hope now will be to see the exciting prospect start to earn a place in the senior set-up, which could kick off a long and successful partnership.

Mitchell Marsh and Will Bosisto pile up hundreds to grind down Queensland

Will Bosisto batted throughout the third day at Allan Border Field for a career-best 132* as Western Australia moved into the lead

Mitchell Marsh produced a superb century under team and personal pressure and Will Bosisto hit a career-best unbeaten 132 as Western Australia fought back impressively under the weight of Queensland big first-innings total.Marsh and Bosisto put on a partnership of 185 having come together at 156 for 6, trailing by 292. After Marsh departed, Bosisto was able to see out the entire day and an unbroken 56-run stand with Jhye Richardson had taken Western Australia into a two-run lead. For Marsh, like his brother Shaun, there was the additional pressure of having to respond to a poor Test series in the UAE which has brought scrutiny on his place ahead of India’s visit later this month. He was left out of the current one-day series against South Africa and the immediate response has been encouraging for the selectors.Marsh brought up his century off 201 balls with a boundary against Michael Neser and later went to his 150 with a six off Marnus Labuschagne before falling three balls later to the legspinner as Queensland were made to wait until the final session for their first breakthrough of the day.Bosisto, who had played the ideal foil to Marsh, then struck three boundaries in a row off Brendan Doggett to take him to 98 then next ball reached his second first-class century off 233 deliveries.Labuschagne also removed Josh Inglis but was the only one of the eight Queensland bowlers used to find success on a long day in the field.

+Confira e simule a tabela do Campeonato Carioca 2021

Melhorar a criação do time

Rangers are now interested in signing exciting new teenager for Clement

Rangers are interested in completing the signing of a hugely exciting British player who has shone at academy level, according to an update from reliable journalist Mike McGrath.

Rangers transfer news

The Gers have enjoyed a new lease of life with Philippe Clement as their new manager, with the Belgian making an immediate impact after the sacking of Michael Beale.

On Sunday afternoon, Rangers return to Scottish Premiership action as they make the trip to Aberdeen looking to keep the pressure on Celtic in the title race.

The Scottish giants conducted some important transfer business during the summer window, signing the likes of Danilo, Cyriel Dessers and Sam Lammers, but there is still room for improvement in the squad, meaning that Clement could yet delve into the market in January.

Clement could secure an ideal Balogun heir in Rangers swoop for 6ft "revelation"

Rangers could be set to make a signing or two in January

ByRoss Kilvington Nov 24, 2023

Rangers have been linked with a move for Everton centre-back Ben Godfrey, which could be an exciting piece of business, while Motherwell youngster Lennon Miller is also seen as a target for the Gers. Now, a fresh transfer update has emerged, with another prospect potentially heading to Ibrox in the near future.

Rangers want Mason Cotcher

Taking to X (formerly Twitter) on Friday, McGrath stated that Rangers are keen on acquiring the signature of highly rated youngster Mason Cotcher following his exit from Sunderland:

"England U17 forward Mason Cotcher has been training with the 1st team squad at Arsenal after leaving Sunderland. Rangers are also interested in signing the 17yr old and moving cross-border to Scotland would be for much lower compensation."

Considering he is still only 17 years of age, Cotcher would clearly be a signing for the future as far as Rangers are concerned, but he is someone with such long-term potential that a move to Ibrox would be eye-catching.

The Gers transfer target has won two caps for England's U17s, which immediately says a lot about the level of talent that he possesses, and he has scored and assisted once apiece for Arsenal's U18s in two appearances. Meanwhile, during his Sunderland days, he netted nine times in 27 outings at youth level.

While predominantly a centre-forward, Cotcher is capable of excelling on either flank, further adding to his appeal, with his versatility something that can be priceless for any squad player in the modern game.

Granted, the teenager isn't someone who is going to suddenly inject further life into Rangers' season at senior level, but bringing in one of the most exciting British talents around would be impressive long-term planning, rather than simply focusing on the present and not thinking enough about the future.

In an ideal world, Cotcher would come in as an academy player to begin with, perhaps even being loaned out elsewhere to continue to learn his trade, before eventually maturing into a first-team player and one of the first names on the teamsheet.

There is no doubt that more senior transfer targets also need to be looked at, however, with failure to strengthen Clement's squad in the January window acting as a big opportunity missed as they look to wrestle the league title away from Celtic.

Starc seeks rhythm as Paine rests finger

The focus ahead of the Perth Test was on Mitchell Starc, who has struggled to hit form and rhythm, even as Australia believe they have a slight advantage over India at the new Perth Stadium

Daniel Brettig in Perth12-Dec-20182:02

‘The conditions at the new stadium will suit us’ – Harris

A firm handshake from the banned batsman Cameron Bancroft was the extent of the Australian captain Tim Paine’s activity at training on Tuesday, but rather more was undertaken by Mitchell Starc as the only member of the “big three”, with Josh Hazlewood and Pat Cummins, to bowl. While Paine, the coach Justin Langer and the bowling coach David Saker have all sung his praises, the sight of Starc bowling apart from Hazlewood and Cummins was the strongest sign yet that his form and function need significant improvement to reach the desired level in the second Test.Recorded by two cameras, one fixed in the umpire’s spot and another hovering in a drone overhead, Starc bowled for an extended period in the centre of the WACA Ground alongside Peter Siddle and Mitchell Marsh. “Yeah quick, he bowled pretty well,” the opener Marcus Harris said. “There was obviously a bit of talk about him after the game but I thought he bowled pretty well during the game and he’s felt like he was in good rhythm out there before. I’m sure he’s ready and raring to go for Friday.”Starc will need to put on a dominant display for Australia in helpful conditions in Perth or risk being forced out of the side, the former selector Mark Waugh has said. Since a five-wicket haul against South Africa in Durban in March, he has claimed a mere 12 further – and expensive – wickets in six Tests.”He hasn’t bowled at his best probably the last 12 months,” Waugh told . “He’s just been a little bit off with his consistency and line and length. But he’s that sort of bowler who’s a bit of an enigma. He bowls some bad balls and then he’ll bowl you a cracking delivery. I’d just love to see him a bit more consistent with the new ball.2:26

Mitchell Starc’s magical numbers

“Perth’s really going to suit him. He’s going to bowl quick there and get a lot of bounce. If he’s probably not up to scratch in Perth I think they might think about making some changes for the rest of the series.”Langer’s men appear aware that they must win the second Test against India to have any chance of regaining the Border-Gavaskar trophy, given that the final two Tests are in Melbourne and Sydney, which have traditionally been more favourable venues to India’s batsmen in particular.ALSO READ: Langer hopes for fiery Perth Stadium debut”I thought India bowled well. You saw through both innings it wasn’t an easy wicket to score on freely,” Harris said of Adelaide. “If you look at India’s scores everyone got starts, and obviously the difference was Cheteshwar Pujara. It wasn’t an easy wicket to come out and get 40 or 50 off 60 or 70 balls. Pujara was the difference in the whole game, and we didn’t have someone make 120. So if you look at that by the end of the game, what’s the difference? Thirty. Our plan was to occupy the crease, and the longer you bat things will get easier. Unfortunately we didn’t have anyone who got a big score, but it wasn’t too much of an issue for us.”At the same time, the pace and bounce on offer at the new stadium in Perth will provide plenty of assistance to India’s disciplined and varied bowling attack. To that end, Langer was seen working assiduously alongside the Victorian batsman Peter Handscomb in the nets before his centre-wicket session, the better to equip him for a long batting stay during the Test after he squandered a pair of starts in Adelaide.”I think we took some good confidence from the fight we showed, I think it got down to 30 runs,” Harris said. “I know when I looked at it as a batter I thought ‘Bugger, I wish I could’ve got 60 or 70’, so we got pretty close and the fight we showed, hopefully, we can take some momentum into the game on Friday. I think the pitch will suit us a little bit more with the conditions.Getty Images

“Obviously it’s not the WACA, but from what I’ve heard from the boys who’ve played Shield games there, the wicket is as quick and as bouncy. So I think it’ll suit us. We’ve played some one-day games there, some Big Bash games there. I think we’ll probably still have the advantage if there’s any. It’ll be interesting to see how it plays and how the game pans out.”That’s taking nothing away from India, but I just think a little bit of momentum. We would’ve loved to win the game, but the boys bowled really well, the bowlers also batted really well, so it’s probably on us batters to take a bit of the weight from them.”Paine chatted amiably and at some length with Bancroft, set to make his return from suspension for the Perth Scorchers in the BBL at the end of December, as he seeks to rest his battered right index finger. “He’s [Paine] all good,” Harris said. “From what JL [Langer] said he just wanted to have a rest today. I didn’t even know there was anything wrong with him. I’m pretty sure he’s all good.”Born and raised in Perth before moving to Victoria in 2016, Harris is in the odd position of playing a Test in his home town having never played at the venue where it will be held.
