Australia had 'bitter taste' after fading in previous Ashes – Mott

The Australia coach has said the way the team faded in the 2017-18 series provided motivation to bring more ruthlessness to their game

Australia women coach Matthew Mott has admitted that the way the team faded at the end of the 2017-18 Ashes has provided motivation to retain the prize with outright victory in this year’s multi-point series.Australia kept hold of the Ashes when it was played on home soil – having regained them in 2015 – but England won the final two T20Is to level the contest at eight points each. Australia were bowled out for 112 in Canberra, before Danni Wyatt’s century cancelled out Beth Mooney’s unbeaten 117 in the final game.Mott said that slip had been used as a drive to bring a greater ruthlessness to Australia’s cricket and the results since have been evidence of that, with just two defeats in all internationals since the end of the previous Ashes.”It’s been a huge factor. Everyone in that team felt a bit of a bitter taste at the end of that series. We’d done the hard work and just took the foot off the throat,” Mott said. “We talk a lot about finishing teams off and it’s really been a motivating factor for the last 12 months and how we’ve played the game.”In all the series we’ve played since the intensity on the last day has been as good as the first. It’s been a huge factor and in our minds one of the themes is a bit of unfinished business. We are obviously happy to hold the Ashes but we want to come over here and win them this time.”Mott knows his team will face a confident England side that is currently on a run of 14 unbeaten matches having made convincing work of defeating West Indies over the last few weeks. “It’s two great teams going head-to-head, they’ll be chock full of confidence and we’ve had a really good 12 months. Two of the best teams in the world going head-to-head, it’s a special summer, I think everyone has earmarked this for a while and we just hope to start well.”The Ashes begins with the three-match ODI series – where two points are on offer for a victory – before the Test in Taunton, where victory carries four points, followed by the three T20Is. Australia could look to supplement their squad ahead of the Test with a player from the Australia A team which is playing concurrently in the UK.”It’s created a really unique opportunity for us to play alongside each other and give our players the opportunity to get some game time,” Mott said. “We are going to work together to make sure we maximise game time for everyone, rather than sitting and watch if they can get some games in, then great. Also there’s an added incentive for the A-team players, they know we’ve got the opportunity to add an extra player around the Test match so that 15th player, if they are knocking the door down in the A team, they have the chance to come in.”Australia begin the tour with two warm-up matches against the England academy team in Loughborough ahead of the opening ODI in Leicester on July 2.Ashes squad Nicole Bolton, Nicola Carey, Ashleigh Gardner, Rachael Haynes, Alyssa Healy, Jess Jonassen, Delissa Kimmince, Meg Lanning, Beth Mooney, Ellyse Perry, Megan Schutt, Elyse Villani, Georgia Wareham, Tayla VlaeminckAustralia A squad Maitlan Brown, Erin Burns, Maddy Darke, Josie Dooley, Heather Graham, Sammy-Jo Johnson, Tahlia McGrath, Sophie Molineux, Georgia Redmayne, Molly Strano, Rachel Trenaman, Belinda Vakarewa, Amanda-Jade Wellington

Romano: Newcastle now eyeing "free transfer" for in-demand Arsenal talent

Whilst Newcastle United endured a January transfer window to forget, those at St James' Park can at least turn their attention towards the summer window in an attempt to make up for a disappointing month. In need of reinforcements, the Magpies are now looking at a future gem for Eddie Howe.

Newcastle transfer news

Much of Newcastle's focus during the January window was seemingly on keeping hold of players after the likes of Callum Wilson, Miguel Almiron and Kieran Trippier all linked with moves away, albeit without completing departures in the end. Since deadline day, however, the focus has been able to switch to potential summer targets.

Names such as Amadou Onana, Anton Stach and Matias Soule have already been mentioned as potential summer targets, as PIF look to splash the cash once again at St James' Park.

The rich owners will be hoping to get things right this time, having failed to invest wisely last summer, welcoming the since-banned Sandro Tonali, injury-prone Harvey Barnes, Lewis Hall, who is now out-of-favour, and the young Tino Livramento, the sole success story to this point. And when June arrives, they could get off to the perfect start by hijacking Arsenal's deal.

According to Fabrizio Romano, Newcastle are eyeing a move for Amario Cozier-Duberry if Arsenal's new contract with the youngster collapses. It will be a tight race for Cozier-Duberry's signature if he doesn't extend his stay in North London, however, with Wolverhampton Wanderers, Ajax, Borussia Dortmund and Anderlecht all in the same position as Newcastle. Romano posted the news of the potential "free transfer" on X.

Although Arsenal remain in control of the situation, when June arrives it will be interesting to see just where Cozier-Dubbery lines up, with plenty of clubs interested.

Cozier-Duberry can follow in Miley's footsteps

It speaks volumes that Cozier-Duberry is attracting interest from around European football at just 18-years-old. The right-winger will be hoping to follow the path of Bukayo Saka by breaking into the first team, but given that Saka is still only 22-years-old himself, the question must be asked whether or not Cozier-Duberry will ever gain a starting place in the current Arsenal side.

With that said, the teenager's attention could instead turn towards Newcastle and following academy graduates such as Lewis Miley, who has starred on the biggest stages already this season, despite being just 17-years-old. Cozier-Duberry can look at the chance that Howe has given Miley as a major encouragement, which could give him an interesting decision to make.

Lewis Miley for Newcastle United against Paris Saint-Germain.

Game time and a pathway into the first team should be at the heart of the winger's decision, and if that's not guaranteed at The Emirates, then it would be wise to look towards Newcastle and Howe ahead of this summer.

No ano passado, o Altos conquistou o sonhado acesso à Série C do Brasileiro.

Internal leaks hint at fractious end to Ottis Gibson's tenure

Cricket South Africa reportedly went back on their agreement – in principle – to extend Gibson’s contract until 2021

The messy fallout from South Africa’s disastrous World Cup campaign is now out in the open. Various internal communications leaked to the media over the last few days have hinted at a somewhat fractious end to the tenures of both Ottis Gibson, the head coach, and Mohammad Moosajee, the long-standing team doctor and manager.Over the weekend, the entire coaching staff of the men’s team were let go amid a major restructuring exercise. It has since emerged that Cricket South Africa went back on an agreement – in principle at least – to extend Gibson’s contract until 2021.At a CSA board meeting in February the extension was agreed, and an independent director was asked to redraft a new contract. The specifics of the contract, however, appear to have been a stumbling block.”I first spoke with Ottis, and I said I would like to suggest that the board have a look at your contract, with a possible extension,” CSA chief executive Thabang Moroe explained at a press conference on Tuesday. “Ottis responded by saying that he would more or less look at being employed until 2021, and that’s what I should suggest to the board. I did suggest that to the board. The board deliberated on that.”What the board essentially said to me, to quote verbatim, was, ‘we’re agreeing that you can go ahead and extend the coach’s contract, subject to him agreeing to key specific pointers in his contract changing’. Part of that being EPG [transformation targets], part of that being communication, part of that being performance. We went back to the coach, together with the now acting Director of Cricket and communicated that to the coach, of which he said he could not immediately agree until he saw what his contract looked like.”It has emerged since that the board was concerned at the team missing their transformation targets for the second year in a row, forcing them to enact a policy which would give Moroe final sign-off on team selections and enhanced ability to ensure targets were being met. However, that decision was made without taking the views of Gibson or selection convenor Linda Zondi, resulting in further friction.”Now, that meeting is essentially the same meeting where this policy of selection was spoken of,” Moroe continued. “Obviously it is well documented now in the media that the coach was not really be happy about the board now wanting to activate this policy.”This forced the board to quickly backtrack. It was subsequently reported that transformation targets wouldn’t apply at the World Cup. “The perception that was already put out there was that the board, together with the CEO, was intending to interfere in selection, which wasn’t true,” Moroe said. “To dispel such notions or rumours, we just simply put the policy on ice.”Similarly, with Ottis not agreeing, that’s one of the decisions that emanated from that meeting. That caused the board to say, ‘listen because the coach is not agreeable to a few things that we’re already saying, lets rather put his contract on ice as well’ and judge him the same way we said we would from the first, which is his performances at the World Cup’.”The result was that Gibson went to the World Cup unsure of his long-term future as South Africa’s coach. There were more tensions yet, over the participation of several key players in the IPL, which preceded the World Cup. Gibson wanted his players back early, but Moroe is understood to have not forced the issue with the BCCI for the worry of potential financial consequences.According to reports from leaked communication, Moroe confirmed to Gibson that it had been decided at an April 6 board meeting that CSA wouldn’t be able to financially compensate the players for shortened IPL gigs, which is said to have further disappointed Gibson. The outgoing South African coach wasn’t the only member of the team management left disgruntled by events leading up to South Africa’s reshuffle. It has also been revealed that there was an attempt to remove Moosajee from his position in September last year. However, Gibson and captain Faf du Plessis are said to have met CSA president Chris Nenzani to secure his position.Last week, ahead of CSA’s board meeting, Moosajee informed the board that he didn’t want to continue, apparently also unhappy that he had been removed from CSA’s Exco, a senior executives committee on which Moosajee had been able to directly represent the team he managed. The Exco forms part of the chief executives committee, on which sit both CSA and South African Cricketers Association chief executives. The subject of CSA’s strained relationship with SACA was also a talking point at Tuesday’s press conference. SACA launched legal action against CSA on the eve of the World Cup over the restructuring of domestic cricket and Moroe said CSA are seeking to avert litigation with SACA by meeting with them to iron out any differences.”It would be irresponsible for me to say no, we’re willing to go to court at all costs,” Moroe said. “If we have to we will, to defend our views as CSA. But yes, it is our hope that we don’t go to court. At the end of the day, we are family with SACA and I’d like to think that whatever differences might be on the table, as family we should be able to sit around a table and thrash out those differences and essentially agree to move on. Whether the one party might still be unhappy to a certain extent or not, that should be irrelevant.”

Diego Carlos injury goes "beyond a joke" at Aston Villa – Sky journalist

It's been a brutal stretch for Unai Emery and Aston Villa on the injury front. The first bit of bad news concerned Ezri Konsa, who was ruled out for up to a month after suffering a sprained knee in the 5-0 Premier League win over Sheffield United at the start of the month.

Then, in the 2-1 defeat to Manchester United last weekend, Boubacar Kamara became the third Villa player this season to suffer an anterior cruciate ligament injury after Emiliano Buendia and Tyrone Mings, likely ending his season.

With Jhon Duran out for a number of weeks too after injuring his hamstring, Emery's squad is becoming increasingly stretched as he looks to steer his side into next season's Champions League and prepares for this year's Europa Conference League knockout stages. Somehow, things have just taken another turn for the worse.

Carlos could join Konsa and Kamara on the sidelines

According to The Athletic, Diego Carlos has now dealt Emery a fresh blow after injuring his hamstring during a training session. It's unclear how much time Carlos will miss with the problem, but Villa have set-up an examination from a specialist to find out.

Reacting to the news on Twitter, Sky Sports presenter and Aston Villa fan Dan Bardell said the club's injury situation was now "beyond a joke" after Carlos became the latest addition to the absentee list.

Emery will have to reinstate Torres after Carlos blow

Carlos has become an increasingly important player for Villa of late, starting 10 of their last 12 Premier League matches and the past three in a row in all competitions. The fact he damaged his hamstring in training rather than in a match makes this one particularly galling too.

Aston Villa make contact over “insane” player who could replace Zaniolo

Villa may lose both Duran and Zaniolo this summer.

ByDavid Comerford Feb 15, 2024

In addition to his defensive contribution, Carlos has been vital to Villa's build-up play, averaging the highest progressive passing per 90 minutes of any player in the squad (520.1 yards). In that sense, then, he will be a dual miss if he's out for any sustained period.

Naturally, the big question is who will replace him in the side. Well, the good news on this front is that Pau Torres has just returned from an injury lay-off of his own, with Emery naming him on the bench for the past two fixtures.

While he may have preferred to ease the Spaniard back in, he now looks the overwhelming favourite to start alongside Lenglet against Fulham this weekend. The only other available option is Calum Chambers, who's made one appearance since September, because Emery elected to leave Kortney Hause out of his Premier League squad altogether.

Sourav Ganguly wants Virat Kohli to give players 'consistent opportunities'

The former India captain feels that with Ravi Shastri having been around for as long as he has, the team should start winning world titles

ESPNcricinfo staff24-Aug-2019

Virat Kohli often speaks about doing whatever it takes to win. He says that’s how he is able to bat on even when he is running on empty and the same philosophy had led to him fielding 38 different Test XIs at the start of his Test captaincy. It appears the clock has been reset again with India going into their first match of the World Championship without premier offspinner R Ashwin, triggering the attention of, among others, former India captain Sourav Ganguly.Batting coach candidate Rathour ‘a fantastic guy’

Sourav Ganguly had glowing words for Vikram Rathour, who is favourite to replace Sanjay Bangar as India’s batting coach. “I have played with him, our Test match debuts were in the same series. He just made his debut one game ahead of me, and I played with him in the junior levels as well. Fantastic guy, he’s a fantastic gentleman.
“He’s worked hard at the grassroots level with Himachal Pradesh. I am the president of the Cricket Association of Bengal and I’ve dealt with him in the last four-five years in sending teams to Himachal when Himachal would come for the Ranji Trophy matches. He’s risen from absolutely the basics of Ranji Trophy and putting the hard yards with Himachal boys so hopefully he does well, hopefully all of them along with Bharat, and the fielding coach they can get this team to win bigger medals and bigger trophies because this team has got all the talent.

“I would say that this is one area where Virat needs to just be a bit more consistent,” Ganguly said at an event in Mumbai on Friday. “Pick players and give them a bit more consistent opportunities – for them to get that confidence, rhythm, I have said that before. You saw how Shreyas Iyer played in that ODI series [136 runs at 68 against West Indies] – you pick him and you give him the freedom to play those matches and I think that needs to happen with a lot of players and I am sure Virat will do that.”ALSO READ – Ashwin left out of Antigua XI in ‘astonishing’ selection callKohli’s mixing and matching of personnel coincided with several injuries to key players but there were also instances where first-choice picks like Ajinkya Rahane (Cape Town 2017) and Cheteshwar Pujara (St Lucia 2016) were placed aside for more aggressive options. And, in the ongoing Test against West Indies, the spinner that the team trusted – Ravindra Jadeja – scored a backs-to-the-wall half-century that looks set to provide India with a sizeable lead. Still he had to beat a couple of in-form players to get into the XI.”I was also surprised to see Kuldeep Yadav left out,” Ganguly said. “The last Test he played against Australia, he got five wickets, if you remember in Sydney on a good flat pitch, he picked up five wickets against Australia. But Jadeja also has been in good form, the surface yesterday at Antigua needed three fast bowlers because we saw the seam movement the fast bowlers got and it was a question of the spin.”Ashwin’s record is phenomenal to leave him out in the West Indies, so it’s a decision which Kohli has made and we will find out in the next couple of days how far Jadeja goes on to pick wickets on this surface. Because this pitch will get up and down, as the game progresses, you can see that sort of indication from the first day of the Test, we will have to wait to see but that’s the competition of Indian cricket.”Ganguly also believes that the team – and especially head coach Ravi Shastri, who has just been reappointed for a two-year term – have been together for long enough to start winning world titles.”Ravi has been around for a while – five years he’s completed so he’s got an extension for two more years – hopefully now India can now go all the way in the two upcoming tournaments that are coming up, which is the T20 World Cup and the Champions Trophy which has now become a T20 format,” Ganguly said. “So I hope they do well, they’re doing well, they get to the semi-finals. In 2015 in Australia they struggled, in 2017 in Mumbai West Indies got the better of them and even in this World Cup (2019) so hopefully they will get to the next step and create a winning combination.”
