This "dynamic" 5 ft 9 Celtic magician should replace Maeda

Celtic return to action in the Scottish Premiership on Sunday as they prepare to travel away from Parkhead to take on Motherwell at Fir Park.

The Hoops could head into the match this weekend with a five-point gap to first place as Rangers play before them, on Saturday, but they could also have a chance to move to the top of the table if their rivals drop points.

Brendan Rodgers' side provided the Gers with a chance to go top after they dropped points against Kilmarnock last time out in the Premiership.

A stoppage time equaliser from David Watson in Glasgow was enough to secure a point for the away team, after Kyogo Furuhashi had given the Bhoys the lead during the first half.

Celtic manager Brendan Rodgers applauds the fans.

One player who struggled against Kilmarnock last weekend was Japan international Daizen Maeda, who must now be ruthlessly ditched from the starting XI to make way for January addition Nicolas Kuhn.

Daizen Maeda's performance against Kilmarnock in numbers

The 26-year-old forward was selected to play on the right side of the attack, with Luis Palma on the left and Kyogo and Adam Idah through the middle, but failed to make much of an impact on the match.

Rodgers decided to haul Maeda off after 68 minutes following an unimpressive performance from the winger, who recently returned from international duty with his country.

Out of possession, the opposition found it a little bit too easy to get the better of the right-footed lightweight as he lost four of his six ground duels, and one of his two aerial battles, throughout the game.

He did little to help Anthony Ralston at right-back as the attacker came off the pitch with zero clearances, tackles, interceptions, or blocks in 68 minutes.

To go along with his weak play off the ball, Maeda also failed to produce much in the way of quality at the top end of the field to win the match for his team.

As you can see in the table above, the Japan international did not threaten the opposition goal. He did not provide the goalkeeper with anything to deal with and did little to help his teammates to put pressure on Will Dennis between the sticks.

Unfortunately, this was not a one-off bad performance from Maeda as he has rarely made a big contribution in the final third for Celtic in the Premiership so far this season.

Daizen Maeda's season in numbers

The Hoops number 38 has been underwhelming as he has not produced goals or assists on a regular basis on the wing for the Scottish giants.

His finishing has left a lot to be desired as Maeda has only scored three goals in 19 league appearances, whilst the dud has missed eight 'big chances' in front of goal.

This shows that the forward has not made the most of the chances that his teammates have created for him, as the wasteful attacker has more than twice as many big chances missed as goals scored.

Daizen Maeda in action for Celtic.

He has not made up for his poor finishing with outstanding creativity. The Japanese gem has only provided two assists in those 19 Premiership appearances, and four of his fellow attackers have registered more in the division.

Maeda has only made 0.5 key passes per game in the Scottish top-flight so far this season, which places him joint-20th within the Celtic squad.

This shows that the 26-year-old flanker rarely makes passes or whips crosses into the box that provide his teammates with an opportunity to test the goalkeeper or score a goal.

Overall, these statistics suggest that the Ange Postecoglou signing has struggled to find consistency in the final third, as a scorer and as a creator, throughout the Premiership season so far.

That, coupled with his poor showing against Kilmarnock last time out, is why Rodgers must ruthlessly ditch him from the starting XI for this clash with Motherwell.

Why Nicolas Kuhn should start over Maeda

The Northern Irish head coach should unleash Kuhn from the start ahead of Maeda as the January signing has the potential to offer more at the top end of the pitch.

Celtic signed the 24-year-old magician from Austrian side Rapid Wien during the last transfer window, after he enjoyed a terrific first half of the season in the Bundesliga.

Celtic winger Nicolas Kuhn.

Across 16 appearances, the German gem created 11 'big chances' and made 1.8 key passes per game for his team and was rewarded with five assists for his creative efforts.

This return is considerably more impressive than Maeda's return of four 'big chances' created and 0.5 key passes in 19 Premiership games for Celtic.

Therefore, the former Ajax and Bayern Munich youngster could provide more quality as a creator, which could then lead to more chances being created for the likes of Kyogo and Idah to find the back of the net.

Kuhn, who was hailed as a "dynamic" player by Rodgers, also showcased his potential as a goalscorer in just his second appearance for the Hoops – off the bench – against Aberdeen in January.

Brendan Rodgers.

Idah held the ball up well inside the box and teed up the winger to fire in a fierce shot that went into the bottom right corner, via the help of a deflection, to secure a point for the Bhoys on the day.

The 5 foot 9 dynamo only scored two Bundesliga goals for Rapid Wien but did produce quality in front goal in his younger days, with 24 goals in 35 matches for RB Leipzig's U17s.

Rodgers will be hoping that he can unlock Kuhn's goalscoring potential as well as his creativity on the right flank, cutting inside on his favoured left foot to cause chaos in the final third.

Regular minutes on the pitch could help the young dynamo to find his feet in Scotland as he gains valuable experience with his new teammates and against Scottish opposition, which is another reason why the talented whiz should start.

Maeda's underwhelming performances and Kuhn's exciting quality at the top end of the pitch is why Rodgers must make that change to his XI on the wing on Sunday.

Steven Smith takes centre stage again on day of high drama as Australia give themselves a chance

Smith suffers brutal blows to neck and arm as Jofra Archer unleashes hell

The Report by Valkerie Baynes17-Aug-2019

Steven Smith launches over the leg side after returning to the crease•Getty Images

Steve Smith was always destined to be the headline act, but the way he commanded centre stage at Lord’s could scarcely have been more dramatic.Australia’s fortunes in this second Test hung on Smith’s performance going into day four with his side desperately needing him to stand up again as they resumed at 80 for 4 in pursuit of England’s first-innings 258.By the end of a day in which Jofra Archer unleashed hell in the form of searing pace and destructive force and Smith had barely withstood the barrage, felled by a nasty blow to the neck and struck hard on the forearm, England held a 104-run lead with six wickets in hand. The hosts could have been much worse off were it not for two dropped catches at the hands – or not, more to the point – of David Warner, and a failure to review two not-out lbw decisions that replays suggested would have delivered the wickets of Rory Burns and Ben Stokes.Smith was to be monitored overnight for any delayed signs of concussion, having been cleared to resume batting after initially retiring hurt when he was struck behind the left ear by Archer’s short ball. Despite the ugliness of the hit, which knocked Smith off his feet and sent a hush over the shocked crowd as players and medical staff rushed to his side, it was the blow to his forearm, suffered six overs earlier that sent him to hospital for precautionary X-rays.Smith did not take the field for England’s second innings and was replaced by substitute Marnus Labuschagne, although he was later cleared of any fracture and returned to the dressing room, where he sat with his arm in ice. Sense would suggest he should perhaps have rested as a result of being hit on the neck anyhow, and Smith’s participation in the rest of the match will depend on how he pulls up on Sunday morning. The sight of any player being struck on the neck – Smith wasn’t using stemguards – was sure to evoke memories of Phil Hughes, the Australian batsman who died after being hit in a similar area in 2014. As awful as Smith looked having collapsed immediately after the blow, he calmed the worst fears by quickly removing his helmet and rolling on to his side and then his back. Those fears were eased further as Smith walked back to the pavilion, apparently reluctantly, retiring hurt on 80 with Australia 203 for 6, and, when he returned to bat again after Peter Siddle’s dismissal, it was to relieved and astounded applause from the crowd, which was blighted by some tasteless booing.Smith added 12 more runs, including consecutive fours plundered off Chris Woakes before Woakes had him out lbw for 92 two overs later. Smith called for a review, but his dismissal was upheld by the DRS.Before all the drama, Smith’s role had looked pivotal as he and Matthew Wade resumed for the day on 13 and nought respectively, not least in light of Smith’s twin tons and Wade’s century in the first Test. When Wade was out, Australia needed Smith to turn the match as much as they had at Edgbaston.Smith and Tim Paine, who made their Test debuts together at Lord’s in 2010, looked dangerous before Archer hit his straps with a menacing display that dismissed Paine and turned Smith’s body into collateral damage. In one over, Archer’s slowest delivery was 88mph and his fastest – at 96mph – did the least damage of the three that hit Smith. Batting with an arm guard two overs after the blow to his forearm, the ball smashed into Smith’s gloves as he guided it down safely in front of Jos Buttler at short leg.In England’s innings, Pat Cummins did his best to stretch the tension wire tight by claiming two wickets in as many balls in the fifth over. The hosts’ lead was just 17 when they fell to 9 for 2 with Jason Roy out for 2 and Joe Root registering a golden duck.Roy’s dismissal, on the first ball of the over, was somewhat bizarre. He got a leading edge to a short-of-a-length Cummins delivery which bobbled down the pitch slightly to the on side as Cummins pivoted from his follow through to collect the return catch. Cummins then found a thick edge as Root pushed forward and was caught behind by Paine.Warner put down a low chance to his right off the bowling of Siddle to give Joe Denly a second chance. Nathan Lyon then had an appeal for lbw turned down by umpire Aleem Dar when Burns was on 24 and as Paine declined to review and replays suggested the ball was hitting leg stump. Burns added just five more runs before Siddle had him caught behind. That was after Siddle dismissed Denly, caught and bowled.Again Australia failed to review as Lyon appeared to trap Stokes lbw, with Hawk-Eye confirming their error. That was after Warner had dropped a chance off Stokes, Lyon again the bowler.

A informação é do site ge.

The stunning lineup Michael Edwards could build by rejoining Liverpool

Last weekend's triumph in the Carabao Cup handed Liverpool the assurance that manager Jurgen Klopp will step down from the club off the back of a trophy-winning term.

Klopp announced in January that he would be leaving at the end of the season after nearly nine years of service, winning the gamut of major honours throughout his time in Liverpool and in contention for silverware across every possible front.

Liverpool lift the Carabao Cup.

Indeed, with the Carabao Cup in the bag, the Reds are first-placed in the Premier League, advanced to the quarter-finals in the FA Cup and into the last 16 of the Europa League (which is the one trophy to have eluded Klopp).

With the 56-year-old set to depart, much change is afoot at Anfield and the priority for FSG right now is to bring in a new technical director, with none other than Michael Edwards believed to be the top target.

The esteemed sporting director was instrumental in the lion's share of Liverpool's most influential acquisitions throughout Klopp's tenure, and while convincing him to make a comeback is proving to be a difficult task, it is worth the pursuit.

With this in mind, let's take a look at the changes that could be made if Edwards is to make a sensational return to Merseyside over the coming weeks.

1 Manager – Xabi Alonso

Bayer Leverkusen manager Xabi Alonso.

Edwards' first port of call will be navigating the uncertain situation surrounding the vacant hole soon to be left in Klopp's wake, but his business acumen will find no problem in convincing Bayer Leverkusen manager Xabi Alonso to take the reins.

Widely regarded as the favourite to succeed Klopp, Alonso is doing stellar work in Germany with Leverkusen, who boast an incredible eight-point advantage over imperious defending champions Bayern Munich after 23 fixtures.

2 GK – Alisson Becker

Liverpool goalkeeper Alisson.

Be under no illusions, whatever happens at Liverpool going forward, Alisson must remain between the sticks, with the Brazilian's shot-stopping prowess and all-encompassing skill set making him the best goalkeeper in the world – subjectively, at least.

The 30-year-old has won it all since signing from Roma in a £67m deal back in 2018 and is very much in the prime of his career. His departure would be catastrophic.

3 RB – Trent Alexander-Arnold

Liverpool star Trent Alexander-Arnold.

There is plenty of talk surrounding Trent Alexander-Arnold's future position, and whether that will lie in midfield, but he will remain at right-back for the time being, influencing play and pumping creative ingenuity into a new system.

Across 302 Liverpool appearances, the England international has posted 18 goals and 82 assists and a system shift will not negate his quality, Alonso will build around him.

4 CB – Marc Guehi

Crystal Palace defender Marc Guehi.

Ibrahima Konate is a first-rate centre-back but Joel Matip's season-ending ACL injury likely means he has played his last game for Liverpool and reinforcing the backline will be a priority. Marc Guehi is the perfect replacement.

Recently, according to The Telegraph, Liverpool have registered an interest in the Crystal Palace titan, and while he has been touted at £60m Liverpool would be ludicrous to not push for his signature. He's the real deal.

5 CB – Virgil van Dijk

Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk.

He's going nowhere, not yet. 32-year-old Liverpool captain Virgil van Dijk has been at the top of his game this season and if Liverpool are to add to their Carabao Cup triumph – a trophy won after the Dutchman's remarkable goalscoring contribution in the final – then he will be instrumental.

He's out of contract in 2025 but Edwards has more than a bit of savviness about him and he will engineer an extension to keep Van Dijk at the heart of an exciting new era.

6 LB – Alejandro Grimaldo

Bayer Leverkusen's Alejandro Grimaldo.

While Andy Robertson has been immense for Liverpool since signing from Hull City for a bargain £10m back in 2017, the 29-year-old will not last forever and Liverpool must swoop for Europe's in-form phenom Alejandro Grimaldo.

The Leverkusen star would be enticed by Alonso's anointment and would be sure to jump at the chance to play under the Anfield lights, having been linked with the club before joining his German outfit on a free transfer.

As per FBref, the Spaniard ranks among the top 1% of positional peers across Europe's top five leagues over the past year for goals and assists, the top 3% for shot-creating actions and the top 10% for passes attempted per 90.

7 DM – Martin Zubimendi

Martin Zubimendi.

Another player to be gripped by the chance to reunite with Alonso, Martin Zubimendi has been flourishing with Real Sociedad – Alonso's previous club – over the past few years and has even been described as one of "the best midfielders in the world" alongside Rodri by Spain national team manager Luis de la Fuente.

While Arsenal have long held a vested interest, Football Transfers have recently reported that Liverpool are in the mix as they look for long-term competition for Wataru Endo, with Zubimendi holding a €60m (£51m) release clause.

8 CM – Dominik Szoboszlai

Liverpool midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai.

Dominik Szoboszlai has actually been slightly underrated for Liverpool since joining last summer, with his energy, intelligence and control working wonders for an ambitious outfit enjoying quite the resurgence.

The Hungary captain, aged 23, has completed 88% of his passes in the Premier League, averaging 1.8 key passes, 1.4 tackles, 6.3 ball recoveries and 3.8 successful duels per game, as per Sofascore.

9 CM – Alexis Mac Allister

Liverpool midfielder Alexis Mac Allister.

Alexis Mac Allister has illuminated just how gravely Liverpool needed fresh legs and technical quality last season, with the Argentine World Cup winner arriving from Brighton & Hove Albion for £35m last June as Klopp recrafted a title-contending team.

He's certainly not going anywhere anytime soon, with his dynamic skill set making for a manager's dream, whoever that may be.

10 RW – Mohamed Salah

Mohamed Salah celebrates for Liverpool.

Mohamed Salah was at the centre of a nail-biting transfer saga last summer that saw Saudi Pro League side Al Ittihad offer a staggering £150m sum to prise him away from Anfield.

Like Van Dijk, he's out of contract in 2025 and so will likely leave this summer if a breakthrough is not made in negotiations but has been in supreme attacking form this term, he'll surely want to continue at the highest level, and Edwards will propose a package too enticing to refuse.

Sun story is 'heartless' and 'immoral' – Ben Stokes

England allrounder hits out at publication of details of family tragedy more than three decades ago

Ben Stokes has hit out at The Sun newspaper for the “heartless” and “immoral” decision to publish a front-page article about a family tragedy that occurred in New Zealand before he was born.In a statement on Twitter, Stokes said the story concerned “events in the private lives of my family, going back more than 31 years” adding that it contained “serious inaccuracies which has compounded the damage caused”.”The decision to publish these details has grave and lifelong consequences for my mum in particular,” Stokes said. “To use my name as an excuse to shatter the privacy and private lives of – in particular – my parents is utterly disgusting.”It is hard to find words that adequately describe such low and despicable behaviour, disguised as journalism. I cannot conceive of anything more immoral, heartless or contemptuous to the feelings and circumstances of my family.”Stokes has hit the headlines for all the right reasons this summer, thanks to his starring role in both England’s World Cup win against New Zealand at Lord’s in July, and his stunning unbeaten 135 in the third Ashes Test at Headingley, a performance that was hailed as one of the greatest innings of all time as England squared the series with a one-wicket win.”I am aware that my public profile brings with it consequences for me that I accept entirely,” he said. “But I will not allow my public profile to be used as an excuse to invade the rights of my parents, my wife, my children or other family members. They are entitled to a private life of their own.”For more than three decades, my family has worked hard to deal with the private trauma inevitably associated with these events and has taken great care to keep private what were deeply personal and traumatic events.”Stokes’ statement has been retweeted more 25,000 times, including by his Test captain Joe Root, who urged his followers to “please take the time to read this and respect it”, and the Manchester United striker, Marcus Rashford, who stated that Stokes had been “huge for sport this summer. He and his family deserve better.” Tom Harrison, the ECB chief executive, also joined in the condemnation on behalf of English cricket.”We, like the wider sporting world, are disgusted and appalled at the actions taken in revealing the tragic events from Ben’s past,” he said. “We are saddened that an intrusion of this magnitude was deemed necessary in order to sell newspapers or secure clicks.”Ben’s exploits this summer have cemented his place in cricket’s history – we are sure the whole sport, and the country, stands behind him in support.”In a statement, The Sun insisted the paper had the “utmost sympathy” for Stokes and his mother, but said that they had received the co-operation of a family member in compiling the story.”The tragedy is also a matter of public record and was the subject of extensive front-page publicity in New Zealand at the time,” the newspaper added.

Newcastle now preparing move to sign Arsenal star in big-money transfer

After a season to forget in the Premier League, Newcastle United must go again this summer and make up for previous mistakes in the transfer market by solving the current problems in Eddie Howe's squad. And there may not be a better way to do that than by welcoming a Premier League champion.

Newcastle transfer news

The Magpies, of course, had a summer to forget last time out, signing Sandro Tonali, Tino Livramento, Harvey Barnes and Lewis Hall. In a disastrous campaign, Tonali was almost instantly handed a lengthy ban for breaching betting rules and has only just been allowed to return to training, Barnes has struggled with injuries and Hall has struggled to win the faith of Howe. As we approach the end of the season, Livramento is the only summer arrival to have made a truly positive impact.

As they look ahead to the forthcoming summer window, the Magpies will have to act without Dan Ashworth, who has been placed on gardening leave amid rumours of a move to Manchester United. the Old Trafford-bound sporting director could miss one of Newcastle's smartest coups yet, however.

Man Utd sporting director target Dan Ashworth watches on.

According to Football Transfers, Howe and Newcastle are preparing a move for Oleksandr Zinchenko, who Arsenal value at €45m (£39m) this summer. Those at St James' Park aren't the only interested party either, with Bayern Munich also reportedly eyeing a move for the left-back in an attempt to replace Alphonso Davies, who currently looks on course to become a Real Madrid player sooner rather than later.

Outscoring Isak: Newcastle may have sanctioned their £1.7m sale too early

Howe reportedly wants to strengthen his defence and signing a Premier League winner in Zinchenko would certainly be a place to start. As Newcastle look to make their return to European football next season, the Arsenal left-back could be one to watch this summer.

"Perfectionist" Zinchenko is better than Burn

Not only would Zinchenko bring winning experience to the current Newcastle side, but he'd also be an undoubted upgrade on Dan Burn, who has struggled at times this season. The Ukraine international and multiple time league winner, for just £39m, would be one of the bargains of the summer, as his stats show.

That said, it remains to be seen whether Mikel Arteta would sanction such a departure away from The Emirates this summer. The Arsenal boss was full of praise for Zinchenko when he arrived in North London in 2022, saying via Squawka: “First of all, his mentality. He’s used to winning – winning is the only thing and winning in the right way.

“He’s a perfectionist and a really demanding boy, I know him so well, and after that he brings qualities that we didn’t have in the squad. He gives us a different option to play within the role in different spaces, and I’m really happy to have him.”

In what could be a busy summer, Newcastle would be wise to target a player of Zinchenko's calibre as they look to upgrade on Burn and add some experience to Howe's side.
