Spurs chiefs now pushing to keep player Ange has barely used

Whilst Ange Postecoglou and his team prepare Tottenham Hotspur's players to take on Arsenal in the Premier League this weekend, work is going on behind the scenes ahead of the summer transfer window.

The focus of the coaching staff and first-team stars should be on the action on the pitch in their bid to secure Champions League qualification by finishing in the top four ahead of Aston Villa.

However, Daniel Levy and the Spurs chiefs behind the scenes are already laying the groundwork to manage the squad ahead of the 2024/25 campaign.

They are now reportedly pushing to ensure that one player – Giovani Lo Celso – remains part of Postecoglou's playing group moving forward.

Tottenham want to keep frustrated star

Earlier this year, it was reported that Lo Celso was pushing for an exit from north London as he was frustrated, and seemingly annoyed, with his current situation at the club given the lack of minutes the manager has provided him with.

Now, in a twist to the story, Spurs want to keep hold of the Argentina international and offer him a new contract, according to Tutto Mercato Web, as relayed by Sport Witness.

The report claims that Tottenham are hoping to extend his current deal, which is due to expire in the summer of 2025, by another two seasons to preserve his future in England.

It states that they are looking to adjust his wages to ensure that Lo Celso is happy and willing to remain with the club beyond the summer window.

Spanish giants Barcelona are said to be admirers of the central midfielder, along with fellow La Liga outfit Real Betis, and Spurs are now attempting to scare away potential suitors by pinning him down to a contract extension.

Why Spurs may want to keep Giovani Lo Celso

The Lilywhites may want to keep hold of the World Cup winner as he has shown glimpses of promise in his limited time on the pitch this season.

Lo Celso has seemingly been frustrated, per the earlier report this year, that Postecoglou has barely used him in the Premier League, and his statistics in the few games he has played suggest that the midfield star has reason to feel aggrieved.

As you can see in the table above, the 28-year-old whiz has provided quality in and out of possession, with four direct goal contributions in 17 appearances despite only starting four times.

His 63% duel success rate also shows that the left-footed maestro has held his own in physical battles to either retain possession or win the ball back for his side, whilst his pass accuracy suggests that the talented ace rarely gives it away.

These attributes make him an attractive player for a team that wants to dominate possession, as he has the quality to provide goals and assists as a box-crashing midfielder whilst being solid off the ball and a reliable passer.

However, it now remains to be seen whether or not Lo Celso is willing to put pen to paper on an extension amid his frustration at the lack of minutes given to him by the boss.

'It is a crappy feeling to miss out again' – Sophie Devine rues World Cup exit

New Zealand’s stand-in captain keen for more opportunities after near-miss in T20 World Cup campaign

World Cups have become an albatross around New Zealand women’s neck. For a third straight time, under three different captains and two coaches, have they now failed to make the knockouts of world tournaments. The most recent of those came down to a four-run defeat against hosts Australia at Melbourne that dashed their hopes of reaching the last four of the T20 World Cup.After exiting in the league stage at the 2017 ODI World Cup in the UK under former captain Suzie Bates, and the T20 equivalent the following year in the Caribbean under Amy Satterthwaite, a change in captaincy in light of Satterthwaite’s pregnancy break led to senior allrounder Sophie Devine taking over the role in mid-January.An overhaul in the coaching staff, meanwhile, lead to Bob Carter replacing Haidee Tiffen as head coach, the latter stepping down from the tour of Australia in 2019 following a review into New Zealand’s disappointing 2018 T20 World Cup, before she decided against reapplying for her position. With Carter’s contract running up to the 2021 ODI World Cup home in February-March, and Devine taking up the captaincy, New Zealand had hoped a restructuring in the domestic set-up – considered long overdue before the NZC finally carried it out in August last year – could help them turn their fortunes around in world tournaments. That, however, was not to be as a three-run defeat to India last week and Monday’s loss in Melbourne against their Trans-Tasman rivals shoved them into the bottom three in Group A, with India and Australia proceeding to the knockouts.”I think skill-wise we are there; everyone knows we are a really talented side and we’ve got the depth,” Devine said when asked to assess their inability to qualify for semi-finals. “We’ve seen today that despite me not firing, Suzie and Rachel [Priest] not firing, we came really close to chasing down a strong Australian side.”Whether it’s a mindset, whether it’s a mental thing, whether it’s game awareness, whether it’s just experience of playing in those pressure situations. We haven’t played too much international cricket together in the last 12 months, whether that’s something, but when we get back home, we’ll certainly go through everything and nitpick at it because it is a crappy feeling to miss out again. It’s really raw. But we certainly want to keep pushing and showing that we deserve to be there.”In the lead-up to the tournament, a 0-3 defeat to South Africa at home in the ICC Women’s Championship ODI series marked the start of Devine’s tenure as captain, although New Zealand produced an emphatic turnaround in the five-match T20I series that followed, winning 3-1 with the last game abandoned.Heading into the World Cup, the environment around the squad, Devine underlined, had been “positive”, with the coaching staff – including Carter, Jacob Oram (bowling coach), and Rob Nicol (spin bowling coach) – focused on helping the players to convert potential into performance. In addition, a wider pool of contracted players and a significant pay hike for centrally contracted New Zealand women assured by the Women’s Master Agreement, which was reached in principle by NZC and the New Zealand Cricket Players Association (NZCPA) last August, inspired hopes of a more promising performance at the T20 World Cup in Australia.”There was a big overhaul and it wasn’t just the top group at the White Ferns [New Zealand women]; it was the domestic stuff as well in New Zealand cricket,” Devine said. “And we have also seen in women’s cricket globally, it is coming up by leaps and bounds and we’re no different. To get Bob involved has been huge. [But] we’ve only played two series in that time with him at the helm. We still certainly are trying to figure each other out a little bit, me and Bob. But I think there have been really positive signs there.ALSO READ: The irresistible rise of Amelia Kerr, New Zealand’s ‘once-in-a-generation’ prospect”As I said, we were actually really close. The India game and now here [against Australia]; we were really close to [beating] sides with a lot more money, a lot more resources, a lot more player depth, and we took them within five or six runs. It shows that we are not far but we have got to do things maybe slightly differently in New Zealand because we don’t have the same amount of depth, resources; but we certainly have things in our favour and that’s what we keep working with.”With Satterthwaite expected to return to the side ahead of the ODI World Cup, for which New Zealand have gained automatic qualification by dint of being hosts, the team management must decide whether to persist with Devine or hand the captaincy back to Satterthwaite. Devine, whom Jacob Oram described as an “attacking captain”, though, is game for more.”Yes, certainly,” Devine said when asked if she would be keen on continuing in the role. “That’s another discussion that needs to be had when Amy returns and what it all looks like. At least for me, I have always been an aggressive player, and I sort of continue that with my captaincy. We’ve had a great role model in Brendon McCullum a couple of years ago, who always took the game on, and I don’t want to be any different with this bunch of female athletes.”We do want to be really attacking and aggressive and how we go about things – whether it be putting things under the lid or bouncing people out – whatever it might be. We’ve always talked about stepping forward rather than stepping back and that’s certainly what I am going to do with my leadership.”

Arsenal could sign their own Haaland in £43m Havertz upgrade

After another weekend of exciting football, Arsenal are still flying atop the Premier League table.

Manchester City might still have a game in hand on the North Londoners, but Mikel Arteta's side have proven that they aren't just going to roll over and give in this time.

Kai Havertz

With Martin Odegaard, Bukayo Saka, and Kai Havertz in top form, the Gunners will be big favourites going into their final two games of the season, although, based on recent reports, they could soon land an upgrade on the German.

Arsenal transfer news

According to a report from Football Transfers late last week, Arsenal have intensified their interest in RB Leipzig's Benjamin Šeško ahead of the summer window after it was made clear that Newcastle United would not be willing to sell Alexander Isak.

The report revealed that while it would have cost north of €120m – £102m – to land the Toon ace in the summer, it'll only cost around €50m – £43m – to activate the Slovenian's reported release clause, thus allowing the club to allocate more funds to important positions elsewhere in the team, be that on the wings or in midfield.

The report also revealed that the Gunners' decision to move away from the pricey Isak has seen them distance themselves from Sporting CP's Viktor Gyökeres, who would cost around €100m – £86m – in the summer.

Benjamin Sesko

It might not be the news fans hoped for before a critical summer for Arsenal. Still, based on his performance this season, Šeško could prove to be an upgrade on Havertz as an out-and-out number nine.

Moreover, with favourable comparisons to Erling Haaland in the past, this could prove to be a brilliant move from Edu Gaspar and Co.

Manchester City forward Erling Haaland.

How Šeško compares to Havertz

Now, for as talented as Šeško is and as effective as he has been in his short career, he is not as outrageously clinical as Haaland is, but respected talent scout Jacek Kulig has flagged a few similarities between the pair.

Notably, he claimed that the Leipzig ace's "pace, acceleration, finishing, athleticism, movement", and "link-up play" all mirror the Norwegians, which suggests that while he might not hit the heights of 36 Premier League goals in a season that the City man did last year, he could get close once fully developed.

With that said, how does the Radeče-born ace compare to Havertz this season? From a pure goalscoring perspective, it's 1-0 to the former Salzburg man as he's found the back of the net 16 times in 40 appearances this season, while Arsenal's Player of the Month for April has scored 13 goals in 49 games.

The 44-capped German has provided four more assists than his competitor, but when it comes down to goal involvements per minute, he is in a distant second place.

How about their underlying numbers, then? Is it as comfortable a victory for the 20-year-old when comparing their striker-relevant metrics? Well, unfortunately for the former Bayer Leverkusen ace, it is.

In the metrics most relevant to a goalscoring number nine, such as non-penalty expected goals and assists, shots, shots on target, and goals from shots on target, he is worse off than the man who could replace him.

Ultimately, Havertz has been in fine form for Arsenal this season and looks destined to have a great career with the club, but if the Gunners want to land an upgrade in the striker position without breaking the bank, the "prolific" Šeško, as described by Kulig, looks like their best option.

ICC threatens to shift 2021 T20 World Cup from India over tax issues

The Indian board’s request for a deadline extension due to the Covid-19 pandemic has been rejected

Nagraj Gollapudi27-May-2020

The ICC has told the BCCI that it reserves the right to take away the 2021 men’s T20 World Cup from India, after the BCCI failed to secure a tax exemption for the tournament from the Indian government. In a flurry of blunt e-mails over the past two months, seen by ESPNcricinfo, the ICC told the BCCI it had to provide an “unconditional confirmation” by May 18 this year that a solution had been found to a longstanding issue in coordination with the Indian government. For its part, the BCCI wanted the deadline extended at least until June 30, citing the Covid-19 pandemic as reason for invoking the force majeure clause [unforeseeable circumstances that prevent someone from fulfilling a contract] in the agreement. The ICC has rejected the request.”In light of the BCCI’s notification of force majeure, we would highlight the obligation on the BCCI… of the Host Agreement and that IBC (ICC Business Corporation) is entitled to terminate the agreement with immediate effect at any time from 18 May 2020,” Jonathan Hall, the ICC’s general counsel, wrote to the BCCI on April 29.”The BCCI has clearly had many years to arrange the tax solution… which is why the agreement asks for it to be provided ….no later than 18 (eighteen) months prior…. and why the BCCI was required to provide it by 31 December 2019. In such circumstances IBC is not prepared to agree to the requested extension to June 30, 2020 or 30 days after the lockdown is lifted whichever is later.”In the meantime, all of IBC’s rights are reserved in full including the right to challenge whether or not a valid force majeure exists.”The issueThe denial of tax exemption has been cause for a tussle between the ICC and the BCCI since the 2016 T20 World Cup in India, when there was a US$20-30 million shortfall for the ICC, which in turn withheld this amount from the BCCI’s share of ICC’s central revenue. BCCI has since taken the matter to the ICC’s Dispute Resolutions Committee and a resolution is awaited.’This letter constitutes a notice of Force Majeure’As a result, this time the ICC has been in constant correspondence with the BCCI administration, with ICC chief executive Manu Sawhney writing to BCCI president Sourav Ganguly at the end of January before Hall sent another email to board secretary Jay Shah in early April. Hall told Shah that as hosts, the BCCI had an “obligation” to “deliver a ‘tax solution'” where the tax “will be minimised, effectively waived or zero rated” in favour of the ICC.Hall also reminded the BCCI that at a February 2018 meeting the IBC board had “resolved” that the BCCI would find a solution by December 31, 2019, a deadline the BCCI had “failed” to meet. The BCCI was then given an extension until April 17 this year, 18 months from the tournament as stipulated in the host agreement. On April 13, after the Covid-19 lockdowns had been imposed, the BCCI told Hall that the deadline could not be met because they hadn’t been able to approach the government as “sports events and permissions and approvals in relation thereto” were not “classified” as “essential services”. The lockdown began in India on March 24 and is set to continue to May 31 at least.”While BCCI has been making all efforts to get a ‘tax solution’ for the event, in view of the current situation, which is beyond the control of the BCCI, it is not possible for BCCI to obtain requisite permission/consent from the Government of India before April 17, 2020,” the BCCI said. “In light of the above, the BCCI hereby requests IBC to grant an extension of time till June 30, 2020 or 30 days after the lockdown is lifted, whichever is later.”For the avoidance of doubt, this letter constitutes a notice of Force Majeure under …Host Agreement.”There were previous tax issues between the BCCI and ICC from the 2016 T20 World Cup•ICC/Getty Images

‘Alleged deadline of 31 December 2019 is of no relevance’Since then, communication has become tenser. Hall asked the BCCI to provide evidence that it had made efforts towards a tax solution; earlier this month, the BCCI responded to Hall, that in the “spirit of cooperation” it was attaching evidence of its correspondence with the Indian government since 2018 requesting a tax exemption.Four of the six letters attached were sent in 2018 – on February 27, July 12, August 24 and December 18; two more were sent in 2019 – on July 3 and August 16. “As these actions will demonstrate, BCCI has been pressing for and continues to press the Government of India for a tax solution,” BCCI said. The BCCI contested Hall’s claim that it was in breach of the December 31, 2019 deadline. “BCCI denies that it was required to procure a tax solution by this date”, arguing that Hall himself had noted in his previous email that it had to provide a solution by April 17 this year. “Therefore, the alleged deadline of 31 December 2019 is of no relevance.”The BCCI also disagreed with Hall’s claim that the ICC could challenge the force majeure being invoked. “We disagree the BCCI could have avoided the effect of the FM (force majeure) event. As should be evident from the correspondence enclosed with this email… BCCI has been making efforts to procure a tax solution from the Government over a period of time. These efforts were ongoing at the time when COVID-19 was declared a pandemic and have been interrupted by the significant restrictions imposed by the Government of India.”What happens now?Despite the ICC’s stance, officials believe it will remain open to discussions with the BCCI, which appears unperturbed. “The ICC can only do brinkmanship,” a BCCI official said. “The broadcasters’ agreement says the ICC has to deliver two events in India,” the official added, linking a resolution to the forthcoming change of chairmanship at the ICC – Shashank Manohar, the incumbent who has had a spiky relationship with the BCCI, is expected to step down in July.

Wolves must sell £37m star who earns as much as Gomes & Neto combined

Wolverhampton Wanderers appear to have found some stability in the leadership of Gary O'Neil, who has the skills and the style to enjoy a successful tenure at Molineux for many years yet.

Having taken the reins at Bournemouth following the sacking of Scott Parker in 2022/23 – previously serving as the 43-year-old's understudy on the South Coast – O'Neil led the Cherries to unlikely survival on their return to the Premier League, though he was dismissed anyway for the progressive football of Andoni Iraola.

But Wolves know a gem when they see one, and after Julen Lopetegui's departure, O'Neil was brought in and he has worked wonders in guiding the Old Gold away from danger and securing a comfortable 13th-place top-flight finish – accruing five extra points (46 in total) to last season's 41-point haul.

And that's despite last summer's mass exodus, with three of Wolves' record player sales occurring one year ago, leading to Lopetegui's frustrations boiling over and his eventual resignation.

This all bears testament to O'Neil's managerial wherewithal and his faculty for fashioning success from testing circumstances. On the plus, Wolves now enter this year's summer transfer window with little concern over meeting Premier League Profit and Sustainability rules.

Wolves manager Gary O'Neil

Though the Midlands club's best players are being targetted regardless…

The players that could leave Wolves this summer

The obvious one. Pedro Neto is in high demand despite spending half of the 2023/24 campaign on the sidelines nursing injuries, though there is good reason for this after the Portuguese racked up three goals and 11 assists from only 24 matches in all competitions.

The 24-year-old is an immense talent and it's little wonder that, as per The Telegraph, Manchester City and Newcastle United are snooping around with hopes of completing a deal in the coming months, though Wolves have stressed he will cost £60m.

He's not the only one attracting interest from Premier League rivals, however, with tough-tackling titan Joao Gomes on Arsenal and Manchester United's radar following his excellent performances in the Molineux midfield.

Again, Fosun won't let him go cheap and have set a £40m asking price on the Brazilian star, though recent rumours suggest that Thomas Partey might be leaving the Emirates this summer and Gomes could represent a shrewd buy for Mikel Arteta's trophy chasers.

To see such stars depart would be both poignant and concerning for Wolves supporters, who would see their team act to sign fitting replacements lest the club suffer a regression after promising work over the past months.

Wolves midfielder Joao Gomes celebrates

Especially when other high-cost players on the books must be shipped out first, with the time possibly right for Nelson Semedo to end his stay at Molineux.

Nelson Semedo's season in numbers

Wolves signed Semedo from Barcelona in a whopping £37m deal back in 2020, though this is including add-ons and it's unlikely that that initial figure has ever been reached in full.

The Portugal international has completed 145 appearances in total and has been a key part of O'Neil's season, starting 36 matches in the Premier League.

But he's now 30 years old and one of the club's highest earners, with journalist Liam Keen even suggesting that he is one of the most probable departees this summer.

The thing is, as the table above portrays, the 28-cap international has put up solid numbers throughout the campaign, entrusted by O'Neil to use his experience and athleticism to charge the squad down the right flank, but he must be sold regardless.

Let's dig into why.

Why Wolves must sell Nelson Semedo

Semedo is out of contract next summer and so will enter the final year of his deal aged 30 and off the back of a campaign that has not suggested that he is irreplaceable.

Wolves appear to be in the market for a right-back, with TEAMtalk reporting that West Ham United's soon-out-of-contract defender Ben Johnson is on their radar.

When considering that he actually takes home as much as the aforementioned Neto and Gomes. combined, it seems obvious that if there is a way to sell him first, this must be enforced to potentially save the sales of some high-importance pieces at Molineux.

As you can see, only Pablo Sarabia and Goncalo Guedes take home heftier earnings than Semedo in the Wanderers squad and considering that the Portugal ace is now at the final stretch of his contract and has been criticised for his "frustrating" displays by journalist Nathan Judah, it may well be time to cash in.

According to Football Transfers' player valuation tool, Semedo still boasts a market value of around £13m, so this would appear the right time to tempt potential suitors into making an offer.

O'Neil has proven in the past his ability to make good with the tools at his disposal, but by freeing up the wage bill of Semedo and perhaps even recouping some of that initial outlay, he could even have the means to sign a young and eager new star to take his place.

Former Pakistan cricketer Khalid Wazir dies at 84

He was part of Pakistan’s historic 1954 tour of England

Khalid Wazir, part of Pakistan’s historic 1954 tour of England, has died. Wazir had been ill for some time and passed away at the of age 84 in Chester on Saturday.A tall and athletic medium-pace bowler and hard-hitting middle-order batsman, Wazir was the 16th Test cricketer for Pakistan and the second-youngest for his country at the time of his debut against England at Lord’s – only Hanif Mohammad was younger on debut until then.Wazir only played two Tests on that tour but it was a monumental one to be part of, because it announced Pakistan’s arrival as a serious cricketing nation. They drew the series against a strong England side 1-1. Wazir was the son of Wazir Ali, who – and his brother Nazir Ali – played Test cricket for India in the 1930s. After the Partition of the country, the Wazir family moved from Jalandhar to Karachi and their standing was such that one of Pakistan’s earliest, most competitive club tournaments – held during the monsoons in Lahore – was called the Wazir Ali League.Wazir was a surprise pick for Pakistan in the touring party to England with only two first-class games under his belt, and neither had he played in the Quaid-e-Azam trophy in 1953-54, the season leading up to the tour. The tour didn’t go well for him. He played the first and third Tests of the four-match series but managed only 14 runs in three innings and didn’t bowl. He ended the tour with 16 first-class games, scoring 253 runs – including one half-century – at 16.86 and taking nine wickets at 62.66.He was summoned to the Pakistan side on their next tour of England, the more disastrous 1962 visit, after a few pacemen broke down with injury. But he never played on the tour and he was already living in England by then and had become a successful club cricketer in the North Staffordshire and District League.
