Joe Root stars with 186 as Lasith Embuldeniya takes seven in tightly-fought contest

Run-out off final ball of day can’t undermine a masterful performance from England captain

Lasith Embuldeniya’s battle with Joe Root was compelling•SLC

Another stunning knock by Joe Root frustrated Sri Lanka on the third day of the second Test at Galle, but his fall right on stumps swung the contest back in the home side’s favour.Root’s near-flawless 186 sent England to the close still 42 runs adrift after Lasith Embuldeniya claimed seven wickets with his left-arm spin that bamboozled almost everyone, except Root.It was testament to Root’s exertions that he fell in gut-wrenching fashion in the last moments of the day, unable to drag his exhausted, cramping body back into his crease in time after nudging Dilruwan Perera to short leg, where Oshada Fernando fired the ball back onto the stumps with an excellent throw. As James Anderson had said on the second evening, you’re never too old to improve or too experienced to learn. And as he, Root and Jos Buttler lived that adage as the stand-out performers in a battling England effort in this match so far, the young and inexperienced members of the squad could learn a thing or two from them.On the third day it was Root and, to a lesser extent, Buttler who set the example for the likes of Dom Sibley, Zak Crawley and Dan Lawrence upon whom, as current selection goes, England are looking to build for the future.Root’s innings was a masterclass in playing spin. He made batting look easy when, in fairness to the other batsmen, it clearly wasn’t as Embuldeniya spun his way to career-best figures and his third five-wicket haul in just his ninth Test.Joe Root celebrates reaching 150•SLC

Root, player of the match in England’s seven-wicket victory in the first Test with a double-ton at the same ground, defied his team’s woes with the bat in this match. So strong on the sweep the previous day, when he racked up 67 runs off 77 deliveries, Root continued in the same vein on Sunday, his effortless switch-hit to the boundary off Embuldeniya to move to 87 a case in point.Embuldeniya broke a century stand between Root and Jonny Bairstow when he had the latter out on review. Bairstow, who resumed on 24, added just four more – a powerful drive off Embuldeniya to the rope at long-on – before he got an inside edge onto his pad, which was collected by Fernando at slip. Initially given not out, UltraEdge revealed a clear spike as the ball passed the bat.Lawrence, so impressive with fifty on debut in the first Test, fell cheaply to an excellent Embuldeniya delivery from around the wicket which turned sharply and found an outside edge, taken at slip by Lahiru Thirimanne. Up to that point, Embuldeniya had taken all four England wickets to fall, having accounted for openers Sibley and Crawley – both for the third time this series – on Saturday.ESPNcricinfo Ltd

Root brought up his 19th Test century by punching a single off Perera to midwicket with Buttler still relatively new at the crease. The pair put on 97 runs together for the fifth wicket, with Buttler contributing 55 before his bizarre dismissal to debutant Ramesh Mendis. Reaching forward to reverse-sweep, Buttler struck the ball directly onto his boot and it looped to Fernando at short leg. It took an umpire review to confirm the dismissal after the soft signal had been not-out on the presumption that the ball hit the ground.Perera took the second new ball and almost immediately thought he had Sam Curran out lbw, but umpire Kumar Dharmasena turned down the appeal and Curran narrowly survived the DRS on umpire’s call.Curran responded by sending the last ball of Perera’s over for a huge six down the ground but Embuldeniya had him out two balls later, edging to Thirimanne at slip, sending England to tea still 129 runs in arrears.Root was doing his best to keep cramping at bay – understandable given his toil in hot, humid conditions in this match and the last – and he brought up his 150 with a powerful sweep to the boundary off Embuldeniya which epitomised the ability to read the ball and position himself accordingly that had underpinned his fine innings.Related

Dom Bess provided solid support as Sri Lanka struggled to make the one further breakthrough that would have them eating into England’s tail.Root gave them a chance when he edged through the slips cordon, but Thirimanne didn’t get a hand to what would have been a sharp catch.Bess survived an even later chance when he edged Embuldeniya extremely low towards second slip but replays showed the ball had gone to ground. Embuldeniya had him two balls later, however, Thirimanne taking a more straightforward chance at first slip.Embuldeniya bagged his seventh wicket when Mark Wood edged to Thirimanne, whose effort leaping high to his left made him the first Sri Lanka fielder to take five catches in a Test innings.Just as Anderson overcame injury which curtailed his 2019 season and near-constant murmurings about his age to pass 600 Test wickets, just as Buttler thought he was playing his “last game” for England before a pivotal innings against Pakistan last summer, it was just over a year ago that Root scored the most patient of centuries in New Zealand, his first in eight months which turned into a double-hundred, in fact. He then went through 2020 without scoring another Test ton.Now Root is back in sublime touch, passing Geoffrey Boycott, Kevin Pietersen and David Gower to move into fourth on England’s list of leading run-scorers with 8238.Before this match, Root said he had faith that Sibley and Crawley would emerge stronger from a tough introduction to Asian conditions on their maiden tours to the region. On Sunday, all they had to do was watch and learn.

Everton now one step away from sealing deal to sign "outstanding" £21m ace

Hoping to land their third permanent arrival of the summer transfer window, Everton are now reportedly one step away from signing a midfield reinforcement for Sean Dyche.

Everton transfer news

It's been a fairly busy summer at Goodison Park so far, with three fresh faces arriving in the form of Iliman Ndiaye, Tim Iroegbunam and Jack Harrison on loan from Leeds United once again. But it's not all been good news. Recent reports suggest that the Toffees are set to lose Amadou Onana after several rumours have seemingly culminated in a summer switch to Aston Villa.

However, whilst the Belgian's exit will leave a gaping hole in Everton's midfield, it will at least add to the Toffees' summer budget and send them back into the transfer market in search of a midfield reinforcement.

Everton register interest in signing £150,000-per-week Onana replacement

The Toffees are on the hunt for a new midfielder this summer.

ByTom Coates Jul 18, 2024

According to Corriere dello Sport via Goodison News, Everton are now one step away from signing Jesper Lindstrom on loan with an option to buy worth a reported £21m. The Napoli midfielder will take up another one of Everton's loan slots alongside Harrison and will arrive hoping to add an extra creative spark to Dyche's midfield ahead of next season.

Jesper Lindstrom

A third permanent arrival of the summer, Dyche will hope that Lindstrom's arrival will be enough to balance out his side in pursuit of pushing beyond relegation battles once and for all. With just one month until the Premier League campaign gets underway, they'll hope to officially welcome Lindstrom sooner rather than later.

"Outstanding" Lindstrom should boost Calvert-Lewin

If Everton do want to push beyond relegation battles, then getting the best out of Dominic Calvert-Lewin again should be the key. The England international is an out-and-out goalscorer when firing on all cylinders and Newcastle United's reported interest proves that he's still got plenty more to offer in England's top flight. But it's Lindstrom who could unlock his best form.

It's no real surprise that Lindstrom is on the move after playing just 513 minutes and starting three times for Napoli last season, as the Italian club endured a title defence to forget in Serie A. Even without significant game time, however, the Dane managed some impressive numbers, with his passing numbers particularly standing out.

When handed the chance in the past at clubs like Eintracht Frankfurt, the 24-year-old has certainly impressed too. Frankfurt shot-stopper Kevin Trapp said via the official Bundesliga website: "Jesper has already made significant steps forward… you can see that he's an outstanding footballer and has very good technique."

Nottingham Forest eye loan for "exceptional" £120k-p/w England international

Nottingham Forest are reportedly plotting an audacious loan move for a top-level international player this summer.

Forest in slow summer transfer window

Since securing promotion to the Premier League back in 2022, Nottingham Forest have had a phenomenally high squad turnover and are often among the busiest sides in the division.

In their first season back in the top flight, they signed 30 players, headlined by the arrival of Morgan Gibbs-White and Taiwo Awoniyi. They then followed that up by adding a further 17 new faces across the 2023/24 campaign, including the likes of Callum Hudson-Odoi, Anthony Elanga and Murillo.

The Midlands club are closing in on another reinforcement.

ByTom Cunningham Jul 26, 2024

By comparison, this season Nuno Espírito Santo's side have been dawdling, with just five new faces being welcomed to the City Ground. They have signed Elliot Anderson in a £35m move from Newcastle United, while Nikola Milenkovic has arrived from Fiorentina to replace Moussa Niakhate, who joined Lyon.

There have also been moves for Brazilian goalkeeper Carlos Miguel, as well as young pair Mark Stamenic and Eric Moreira from Red Star and St Pauli respectively. The club's biggest successes this summer to date have been their ability to keep hold of impressive defender Murillo as well as Gibbs-White, both of whom had been linked with moves away across the 2023-24 campaign.

Undoubtedly the two biggest stars at the City Ground, Forest are looking to build a quality side around them, and are reportedly plotting an audacious loan move to help Nuno do just that.

Nottingham Forest chase Arsenal man

That comes as The Sun report that the Reds are chasing an extraordinary move to sign out-of-favour Arsenal goalkeeper Aaron Ramsdale. The England international, who was Jordan Pickford's deputy at EURO 2024, fell out of favour at the Emirates Stadium following the arrival of David Raya last summer. He made just six Premier League appearances and just two after being dropped in favour of Raya, both coming against Brentford when the Spaniard was ineligible.

He seemed certain to depart this summer in search of first-team football, but the Gunners have struggled to find anyone willing to meet their reported £30m price tag, with both Newcastle and Chelsea having been linked previously but having since agreed deals to sign other goalkeepers.

Now, The Sun claim that Forest are considering making an offer to take the former Arsenal no.1 on loan for the upcoming campaign, with Espirito Santo's side not willing to meet the asking price for a permanent deal.

They report that Forest are "willing to gamble" and see if the Gunners will let Ramsdale "leave on loan right at the end of the window", and believe that "paying all of Ramsdale’s wages plus a chunky bonus may give them a real chance" of pulling off the coup.

The goalkeeper penned a new deal at Arsenal in 2023, which means that he has just two years left to run on his £120,000-a-week deal at the Emirates Stadium, though the Gunners have an option to extend that deal by a further year.

Despite being second choice, Arsenal boss Mikel Arteta was quick to praise his backup shot stopper last season, dubbing his attitude "exceptional".

“He’s been exceptional around the place with the situation. Like everybody. We love him more for sure. We have him every day. We know him, we know his character and we are really happy to have him."

Ramsdale is undoubtedly a cut above the current options at Nuno's disposal, but the arrival of another two goalkeepers this summer would only muddy the waters further following the fight for the no.1 spot at the City Ground since their promotion.

As it happened – India vs England, 1st Test, Chennai, 4th day

Join us for analysis, updates and colour on the fourth day of the series opener

Matt Roller08-Feb-2021*Most recent entry will appear at the top, please refresh your page for the latest updates. All times are local.5.03pm: Stumps – India 337 and 39 for 1 (Gill 15*, Pujara 12*) need 381 runs to beat England 578 and 178 (Root 40, Ashwin 6-61)There’s stumps and while there will be some chatter overnight about England’s tactics on the non-declaration, they have three sessions tomorrow to claim nine more wickets. India, on the other hand, need 381 more runs, all of which augers well for a fascinating final day.4.30pm: Rohit goesRohit pulls Archer unconvincingly for four and then very convincingly for six, but he falls in the next over to a perfect left-arm spinner’s dismissal from Jack Leach. Rohit presses forward to a length ball that gripped off the pitch, turned past the outside edge and kissed the off stump. That’s exactly what Root was after when he threw him the new ball, and England are buoyant.

4.15pm: Leach takes the new ballArcher and Leach share new-ball duties, with Root getting his spinner in the game as early as he can. Signs of turn early on with the hard ball, but Gill clips him through midwicket for four as he drops too short.

4.00pm: Innings – Innings 178 all out (Ashwin 6-61)So the declaration will never come! Ashwin rips one back into Archer to bowl him and take his fifth wicket in the innings, and then Anderson chips a return catch two balls later. That means India need 420 to win in the fourth innings of the match, with 17 overs to bat tonight and then 90 more tomorrow. Questions will continue to be asked of England’s strategy with the bat in the last hour, but if they take three or more wickets tonight then nobody will be doubting the strategy. Signs of variable bounce and deterioration in the pitch throughout that innings, which will interest Archer as well as Leach and Bess.It will be intriguing to see who takes the new ball for England: Anderson and Archer are the most likely candidates, but they may decide that Leach is a good option with it.3.45pm: Pitch imperfectMy colleague Vishal Dikshit has picked up Kohli saying “” on the stump mic – suggesting that England have been clever in running down the pitch to help cause a little extra wear ahead of the fourth innings. There was a warning early on for exactly that, and Rohit Sharma seemed unhappy with Root poking the pitch with his bat after his dismissal.England are 418 ahead but James Anderson is padded up in the dressing room, deep in conversation with Joe Root – who, incidentally, is still in his training kit rather than his whites.3.35pm: England bat onStill no sign of a declaration. Bess and Buttler have started to attack a little more, but Buttler is dismissed after charging down the track to Nadeem. India seem happy enough to keep slowing the game down, and England bat on after the drinks break. The declaration must be fairly imminent, but I’ve thought that for the last hour.

3.10pm: What’s with the go-slow?”India have bowled over the wicket into the rough. The only thing I can think of is that this is a time thing as to how long they want to bowl for tonight,” suggests Sir Alastair Cook on Channel 4. “I think they’ll want the bowlers to be fresh tomorrow morning with a hard ball that will be starting to reverse with fresh bowlers. But I’ve been wrong all along so I’m clutching at straws.”England certainly don’t seem to be too bothered about the scoring rate at the moment, and Cook may well be right in his suggestion that the overs remaining are the crucial factor here. Given India’s ability to score freely – as evidenced in their famous win at the Gabba – Root may want to ensure that the required rate starts at around four an over, to ensure that even if England don’t force the win, they don’t end up losing a Test that they have largely dominated.

3.00pm: All is calmAn odd lull in the game, as Nadeem bowls into the rough and Bess seems happy to pad him away. England seem content to take time out of the game at the moment, adding seven runs in the last 25 balls at the time of writing. Seems like a real change of approach after attacking so much in the afternoon session. Perhaps the main issue has been Buttler’s lack of strike, with the more defensive Bess soaking up most of the balls.

2.40pm: Pope’s reversalThree reverse-sweeps in a row bring Pope two, four and then the loss of his wicket, as he finds cover-point. Quite a sensible shot, with Nadeem bowling into the rough outside his leg stump to a packed leg-side field. England aren’t hanging around.

2.10pm: Tea – England 119 for 5 (Pope 18*, Buttler 14*)England’s lead is 360 heading into the interval, and you’d imagine the declaration will come around 40 minutes or so after tea. England wasted no time at all in that session, rolling along at four an over, but the most important thing to note is that the pitch is showing signs of wear, which will make life difficult for India in the fourth innings. A couple of balls from Bumrah have kept very low from a length, while the spinners found plenty of bounce and turn with the hard new ball in particular.

1.55pm: Root goes, England lead growsIt took Kohli until the 22nd over to introduce Bumrah into the attack but he has struck with his 11th legitimate delivery, trapping Root lbw with a ball that looked to have kept a fraction low. England are continuing to rattle along at four runs per over, with Buttler edging the first ball he faced to the boundary and then depositing Nadeem for six down the ground.

1.05pm: Ishant’s 300thIshant Sharma traps Dan Lawrence lbw and that is his 300th Test wicket – he’s the sixth India player to reach the landmark, and only the third seamer after Zaheer Khan and Kapil Dev. A fine achievement from a bowler who has improved immensely in the second half of his career. A standing ovation from the Indian dressing room, and applause from his team-mates.Intriguingly, given the match situation, that ball appeared to keep very low from a length, shooting under the toe of Lawrence’s bat and crashing into his front pad. That could see Jofra Archer come into the game in the fourth innings, as well as England’s spinners.12.50pm: SweepologyJoe Root is up and running early with a pair of sweetly-struck sweeps off Shahbaz Nadeem. With the new ball turning and bouncing, and with the form that he is in, it feels like Root will be crucial for England in this innings. If he can find some fluency and keep the strike turning over then the runs will come easily for them. It would be an added benefit for him to be able to judge the pitch while making a decision as to when he should declare.

12.40pm: Sibley fallsI said he hadn’t looked convincing, and now Sibley falls. Coming forward to a full ball from round the wicket, Sibley inside-edges and offers a catch to the man in close at leg slip. Brilliant new-ball bowling from Ashwin and England are two down.Ashwin and Kohli celebrate a wicket•BCCI

12.35pm: Pressing onIndia have lost one of their reviews, after Ashwin struck Lawrence on the pad but ball-tracking confirmed that it hit him outside the line of off stump. Sibley and Lawrence have not been particularly convincing so far, but England’s lead is nudging closer to the 300 mark with every over. India’s no-ball problem is continuing, too: they bowled 20 of them in the first innings, and Nadeem (twice) and Ashwin have overstepped within the first 10 overs of the second.12.10pm: How many will England want?Interesting discussion on Channel 4 in the UK as to how many England will want to set India in the fourth innings, with Alastair Cook – Root’s predecessor – as captain, suggesting he’d like to set a target of at least 400. Perhaps most intriguing was Cook’s answer to host Rishi Persad’s question as to whether the prospect of criticism would enter his head in this sort of situation.”Absolutely,” Cook said. “You think about if it goes wrong [and] what will happen. Maybe that’s the wrong way to think about it. Maybe you should have just been thinking ‘this is the positive way’ and maybe that’s my mindset. I went with 400 then and I’ve thought ‘have I just gone too many?’ There are so many things, so many permutations. And you’ve got to be so reactive. The most important thing is that England want to remain in control. If they suddenly lose two or three quick wickets then they lose that control and India come back into the game.”That probably says more about Cook’s captaincy and his mindset than anything else, but it demonstrates the sort of thing that Root will have to consider. He also hinted that he wished he had gambled a little more in Rajkot, in the first Test of the 2016-17 series – though that pitch was much flatter than this one.

11.30am: Lunch – England 1 for 1Ashwin and Nadeem share new-ball duties and England lose a wicket to the first ball of the innings: Rory Burns falls to Ashwin for the second time in the match, drawn forward and offering a tough chance to Rahane at slip via the shoulder of the bat. This won’t be a straightforward afternoon for batting and Root will have a fine balance to strike in the timing of the declaration – especially with India’s recent fourth-innings heroics in the back of his mind.

11.15am: Innings – India 337 all out (Pant 91, Sundar 85*, Pujara 73, Bess 4-76)England won’t enforce the follow-on despite bowling India out with a lead of 241. Spectacular, low, one-handed, diving catch at slip from Stokes to finish things off after Anderson drew an outside edge from Bumrah’s loose shot.11.05am: Anderson’s short ballThe bumper does the trick for Anderson, with Ishant fending him to short leg. According to ESPNcricinfo’s ball-by-ball length data, that was his first Test wicket with a ‘short’ ball since the Boxing Day Test of 2017-18, when Tim Paine dragged one onto his own stumps. Washington Sundar is going to play his shots now, as India look to reach the follow-on target – though I think England would probably decide to bat for a session or so regardless.

10.40am: Pitch perfectThis surface doesn’t appear to have deteriorated much at all since the second morning, as evidenced by a ball in the 90th over. Jofra Archer drew Washington Sundar forward with an 86.7mph/139.5kph ball in channel outside the off stump, earning a genuine edge. But there is so little pace and carry in the pitch that it bounced barely six inches behind the bat, and reached Stokes at slip just before its second bounce. That will be a bonus for India, as it is increasingly difficult to see how they can lose another 13 wickets. Sundar now has his highest Test score, too. That said, there is definitely extra bounce on offer for the spinners with the new ball. Leach has his second, finding some turn and bounce away from the bat, with Nadeem steering to slip via the shoulder of the bat.Washington Sundar completed a half-century on the fourth morning•BCCI

10.20am: Leach strikesNothing much happening with the new ball for England’s seamers, so Root throws the new ball to Jack Leach less than five overs after it has been taken. He strikes with his second delivery: extra bounce from a length with the harder ball which takes Ashwin by surprise as he lunges forward, hoping to smother the spin, and the ball loops up towards the vacant silly point region. Jos Buttler gets across to take the catch, and the 80-run partnership is broken. Shahbaz Nadeem, at No. 9, is still a useful batsman, but England are into the tail.

9.50am: Easy pickingsPoor start from England’s spinners. Too many balls were either overpitched or back-of-a-length in his three overs this morning, and India have added 27 in six overs, with Sundar reaching his second Test fifty with a cover drive off Leach. The new ball is available: if these two can survive the first 10 overs or so against it then India will grow increasingly confident that this Test can be saved.9.15am: New ball loomsA useful unbroken stand of 32 between R Ashwin and Washington Sundar last night has given India hope of avoiding the follow-on, but there are only six overs until the new ball is due this morning, and England will be hopeful that James Anderson and, in particular, Jofra Archer can break the stand when it arrives. With 15 minutes to go until we get underway, there’s plenty of time to catch up on last night’s Polite Enquiries below, or any of the rest of our overnight content.

StumpsBangladesh recovered from two difficult situations to finish the first day of the one-off Test on 294 for 8 in Harare. Zimbabwe, who dominated the first two sessions by reducing the visitors to 132 for 6, conceded the early advantage by thrusting a slow period upon them in the post-tea session. They took two late wickets, notably removing Liton Das on 95, but couldn’t quite put the finishing touches as the day’s play was called off after 83 overs amid fading light. After Blessing Muzarabani and Victor Nyauchi put them in trouble, the visitors were brought back to life with a 138-run seventh wicket partnership between Das and Mahmudullah. Against Zimbabwe, it was Bangladesh’s first century stand – and the highest by any pair at the Harare Sports Club – for the seventh wicket.Related

Das would rue playing one too many pull shots against Donald Tiripano shortly before the second new ball was available. He was caught at the fine-leg boundary after crossing his previous Test best score of 94. Tiripano trapped Mehidy Hasan Miraz lbw off the next ball.Zimbabwe gave away much of their momentum in a period they used part-timers Milton Shumba and Roy Kaia for 24 overs. They deployed the duo with a view to giving their four-pronged pace attack a break, as well as recovering their poor over rate. In the first four hours, they had bowled only 49 overs.Das feasted on the tired attack, but some of his shots stood out. Among his 13 fours were two beautiful cover drives, three drives through midwicket and an upper cut through a vacant third-man. A slog sweep off Shumba took him to his half-century and Bangladesh to 200, before another easy glance off Kaia brought up the century stand between them.Mahmudullah, in his first Test after 18 months, played the quintessential second fiddle. Undeterred by his No. 8 batting position, he took stock of Bangladesh’s situation at 132 for 6 and initiated a rebuild with Das. Mahmudullah was mostly conservative, hitting five fours, two of which exquisitely pierced the covers. He also flicked one through midwicket and plundered the fine-leg region at will. He was unbeaten on 54 off 141 balls at stumps.A more energetic Zimbabwe dominated the first two sessions of the opening day, making Bangladesh struggle to justify their decision to bat first after winning the toss. Within the first 30 minutes, the visitors were reduced to 8 for 2. Muzarabani removed both Saif Hassan and Najmul Hossain Shanto in an exhibition of quick, hostile fast bowling.Bangladesh got back on their feet courtesy a 60-run third-wicket partnership between Mominul Haque and Shadman Islam, which was followed up by more recovery work from Haque and Mushfiqur Rahim. Shortly after the lunch break, though, Zimbabwe wrested back the momentum.Muzarabani had Rahim lbw, shouldering arms, for 11. Replays showed the ball may have gone over the stumps but without DRS in this game, the on-field umpire’s decision couldn’t be contested.Nyauchi then struck the big blows: Shakib Al Hasan caught behind for 3 and Mominul Haque caught at gully for 70. Haque, the Bangladesh captain, struck 13 fours in his 92-ball knock, getting most of his boundaries through midwicket. His dismissal put Bangladesh in a precarious 132 for 6 in the second session, leaving much to do for Das and Mahmudullah.

Chelsea prepared to offer Lukaku discount as Napoli table £26 million bid

Chelsea are prepared to offer Napoli a discount in talks to sell the Serie A side unwanted striker Romelu Lukaku, with discussions taking a "positive" turn.

Chelsea holding Napoli talks over Lukaku and Osimhen swap

This week, Standard Sport journalist Nick Purewal backed reports that Chelsea negotiations over a deal for Osimhen with Lukaku going the other way have been resurrected – following their botched move for Atletico Madrid's Samu Omorodion.

The prospect of a striker swap between the clubs has been mooted since late last month, with reliable journalist Ben Jacobs of GiveMeSport even claiming Lukaku has agreed a pay cut so he can leave Chelsea for Napoli.

"Chelsea are in talks with Napoli over Victor Osimhen, whilst Romelu Lukaku has already agreed to a pay cut and a three-year contract to move to Naples," wrote Jacobs on X.

"#CFC don't want to pay the €120m+ release clause but are keen on Osimhen should the structure change or price drop. Loan with option has been discussed, as David Ornstein called. Also understand Napoli have raised a loan-option into an obligation should Chelsea qualify for #UCL. Spoke about Osimhen yesterday on the London is Blue podcast. Door not shut. Osimhen also impatient to move, which has caused Napoli to re-assess their position.

"Osimhen has agreed terms with PSG but is understood to be in favour of Chelsea should a club-to-club agreement be reached. PSG talks over a fee/structure haven't progressed to date.

"Saudi offer for Osimhen won't be made unless the Nigerian striker gives a green light after rejected three offers from Al-Hilal 12 months ago. Napoli wanting Lukaku helps Chelsea, as does Osimhen putting pressure on Napoli to leave as soon as possible."

However, since then, it has been claimed that Osimhen isn't keen on the idea of a loan move and wants a permanent new home (Fabrizio Romano), with Chelsea and Napoli now seemingly trying to find the best solution.

An agreement on the price for Lukaku may well be key for Chelsea to strike a deal for the highly-rated Osimhen to come the other way, with Sky Italia journalist Gianluca Di Marzio now sharing an update on the matter.

Chelsea prepared to hand Napoli discount in Lukaku sale talks

As per the reporter, Chelsea are prepared to lower their demands over selling Lukaku to Napoli, with Antonio Conte's side already making a £26 million bid for him.

The west Londoners originally wanted his full £37 million clause paid, but their stance is now softening, as Chelsea also attempt to get Lukaku's £325,000-per-week wages off their books before deadline day.

Di Marzio adds that Chelsea and Napoli will remain in constant contact over the coming days, with both sides looking to reach a compromise and finally agree a transfer.
