Saif Zaib, Tom Taylor eke out Northants advantage to test Yorkshire resolve once again

Three late wickets in the Headingley murk leave visitors dreaming of shock win

Saif Zaib’s progression from teenaged prodigy to proven county cricketer has been far from automatic, but the resolve he displayed against Yorkshire at Headingley will not only encourage Northants to believe that his breakthrough season is upon them but it might even contribute to one of the biggest shocks in the Championship season.Northants should not be taken lightly – they were about to return to Division One before Covid-19 led to the introduction of a conference-style system – and they have an advantage with Yorkshire only 15 runs ahead and seven wickets remaining. Not for the first time this season, Yorkshire find themselves behind the game at the halfway point, but if the weather stays murky, any lead above 160 leaves them competitive, 200 gives them an even chance. The pitch is nibbling regularly and there is some swing to be had.Zaib was the wonderkid who became the first 15-year-old cricketer to represent Northants, and won a three-year contract in the process, but seven years on that has been trimmed to a one-year extension. Averaging under 20 with the bat in all three formats, and with only 24 county wickets to his name, he is now under obvious pressure to prove his mettle.Northants are pushing Yorkshire all the way at Headingley, taking a 28-run first innings lead, and that owed much to Zaib’s discriminating half-century, an exercise in self-denial which brought him 55 from 133 balls, and enabled him to join Tom Taylor, another sturdy half-century maker, in stemming a morning collapse.Related

Amla double-century leaves Hampshire feeling flattened

Yorkshire lost their first five for 80 on the first day; Northants five for 81. Headingley, grey and overcast, remained in grouchy mood with seam bowlers queueing up to take advantage. Only Duanne Olivier did not possess a constant threat.Zaib, left-handed and stocky, met all-comers with respect. He must have feared the worst on 14 when Jordan Thompson’s lbw appeal was turned down, found momentum with two square drives against Harry Brook’s support medium pace just before lunch, and then took successive boundaries off Steve Patterson in an afternoon when Yorkshire’s captain, who must value bowling days like this more with every passing year, must have handed the ball over with some regret.”His statistics do not do him justice,” is the sort of comment heard about Zaib. With only his fourth first-class 50 duly logged, he reminded everyone why. David Willey, Yorkshire’s left-armer, was a former county colleague, and perhaps he remembered how to entice a press on the self-destruct button as Zaib drove on the up and heard his middle stump dislodge behind him. It was a headstrong finish to a responsible innings.Taylor’s runs were equally important for Northants, if not quite as career-defining, and his half-century, not quite as secure, was of similar character, ending when he played inside a delivery from Dom Bess to become the offspinner’s first Headingley wicket. Their stand of 92 in 41 overs, gradually picked up pace, but never lost its air of caution. That was necessary after a fine Yorkshire morning which brought five wickets, all of them caught at slip, the best delivery arguably Patterson’s, from around the wicket, to end Ricardo Vasconcelos’ impressive 47, the best catch assuredly Brook’s one-handed plunge to his right at third slip as Thompson found Luke Procter’s edge.Yorkshire’s 20 overs late in the day – play dragged on until beyond 7pm – were as problematic as had been anticipated, most distressingly so for Tom Kohler-Cadmore, who had responded to his first-innings dismissal by asserting that he fully believed that opening the batting was the best place for him, and that the bad shots that were getting him out could happen anywhere in the order.Sadly for Kohler-Cadmore, 24 hours later all he had to show for his affirmation was an 11-ball duck – and an understandable sense of grievance. Ben Sanderson – “Sheffield-born Ben Sanderson” to Yorkshire folk whenever he takes wickets against them – is quite a handful in such conditions, and he had already beaten Kohler-Cadmore on both sides of the bat, but when runs are in short supply to be adjudged caught at the wicket off your hip is the last thing you need.

Chelsea join race to sign new 22-year-old as Todd Boehly readies £34m bid

Chelsea have joined the race to sign one defender with Blues chairman Todd Boehly reportedly ready to make a last-gasp £34 million bid.

Chelsea spend £271 million on 12 summer signings in busy window

The arrivals of Joao Felix, Mike Penders, Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, Marc Guiu, Renato Veiga, Estevao Willian, Filip Jorgensen, Tosin Adarabioyo, Aaron Anselmino, Caleb Wiley, Omari Kellyman and Pedro Neto have brought Chelsea's spending for the summer to around £271 million (including their £51m move for Estevao).

Club chiefs think Chelsea will make late bid for £60m star after new talks

They’re convinced after a drop in asking price.

ByEmilio Galantini Aug 29, 2024

It's been yet another show of BlueCo's willingness to spend big since their takeover of the club in 2022, and as they back their new head coach Enzo Maresca ahead of his crucial debut campaign in the Premier League, they've shown no sign of being done yet.

Chelsea have been in ongoing talks over a deal for Napoli star Victor Osimhen this week, as they attempt to add a new striker to Maresca's ranks before the transfer window cut-off point on August 31.

Deadline day looms tomorrow, and time is running out for the Blues to formally seal an agreement for the Nigerian, who is also being chased by Saudi Pro League side Al Ahli, according to widespread reports in the last few days.

If a deal for Osimhen cannot be done this late in the day, there are alternatives, with Brentford striker Ivan Toney subject to a Chelsea approach earlier this week as they cast their eyes on multiple striking options for Maresca.

As Chelsea look to ship out Raheem Sterling in the final 48 hours of this transfer window, it is also believed that Jadon Sancho could come the other way in a swap deal, according to reliable transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano.

Jadon Sancho for Borussia Dortmund

"Juventus and Chelsea remain both in talks for Jadon Sancho," wrote Romano on X last night.

"Juventus have improved their proposal today for loan with buy option, Man Utd insist on obligation and salary coverage also key point. Chelsea remain in active talks but still want swap with Raheem Sterling."

Chelsea ready late £34 million bid for Tomas Araujo

As per CNN Portugal journalist Nuno Farinha, despite Chelsea's desire for options up front, it is now possible they could look to bring in another defender as well.

Indeed, Farinha states, via Mais Futebol, that Chelsea have entered the race to sign Benfica centre-back Tomas Araujo, and are ready to offer £34 million to get a late deal over the line.

The 22-year-old made just 13 appearances for Benfica last season, but has impressed with an average match rating of 7.30 across three Primeira Liga starts for the Portuguese heavyweights so far this campaign, according to WhoScored.

National media say £100m Chelsea star could be their saviour in new role

Chelsea fans await the end of the international break with bated breath in the hopes all of their stars return unscathed by injuries, but one of their brightest young talents appears to have shone in a slightly new role for his country.

Chelsea players on international duty

The Blues have a whole host of stars jetting off around the globe to play for their nations this week, with Enzo Maresca sure to be watching from behind the sofa ahead of a crucial run of winnable fixtures coming up for his side.

If they can go into that Liverpool trip with at least three wins under their belt from the previous four matches, the positivity will be flowing around Stamford Bridge, but the first port of call is to escape the international break with a fully fit squad.

Wesley Fofana, Cole Palmer and Omari Kellyman all withdrew from their call-ups before the two-week interval, while the likes of Levi Colwill, Pedro Neto, Marc Cucurella and Enzo Fernandez have all started for their countries so far this break.

Colwill earned his England spot after starting all three of the Blues' Premier League fixtures thus far, and was handed a unique role in Lee Carsley's England set-up against the Republic of Ireland on Saturday.

Carsley played a back four but allowed Liverpool's Trent Alexander-Arnold to roam forward freely, effectively turning Colwill's role into that of both a centre-back and a left-back, with the Three Lions transforming into a back three in possession.

English media say Colwill could be their answer to left-back problems

Gareth Southgate's full-back decisions were the subject of much debate before his departure from the England set-up, as the former 54 year-old shoved Alexander-Arnold into midfield while struggling to find a solution to Luke Shaw's injury woes at left-back, often turning to natural right-back Kieran Trippier in the role.

Colwill, who of course has played as both an out and out centre-back and on the left for Chelsea, therefore seems a perfect fit to slot in on the left and become a back three when Liverpool's playmaker ventures central and further forward, and the national press certainly thought so against Ireland, as shared by The Chelsea Chronicle.

Whether Maresca ever opts to go for a similar style in West London remains to be seen – perhaps Reece James' return could see an identical set-up with the skipper taking up Alexander-Arnold's England role given his own attacking abilities – but one thing is for sure, the Blues were right to slap a £100m price tag on Colwill when suitors came calling this summer.

Day four washed out without a ball bowled

India and New Zealand now have a maximum of 196 overs – including the reserve day – to identify an outright winner

Sidharth Monga21-Jun-20212:36

Is a result still possible in the WTC final?

Persistent rain allowed no play on day four of the World Test Championship (WTC) final, leaving India and New Zealand a maximum of 196 overs – including the reserve day – to identify an outright winner. In case of a draw, the inaugural WTC will have joint winners who will share the award money and the trophy. The draw has become a more favoured result with the first innings of both sides yet to be completed, with only 141.2 overs possible on the first four days. However, the degree of difficulty of batting on this pitch still leaves the teams a chance to claim the win.As it stands, New Zealand are 116 behind India’s first-innings score of 217 with eight wickets in hand after putting India in on day two, after the whole first day had been washed out. Kane Williamson and Ross Taylor are at the wicket with the only half-centurion of the match, Devon Conway, falling minutes before the third day’s play was cut short by bad light. All eyes are now on the forecast for the last two days of the Test. BBC has predicted nothing more than a gentle early-morning shower on Tuesday and a clear sunny day on Wednesday. Accuweather has forecast a cloudy day with the odd shower on Tuesday and a “sunny to partly cloudy” Wednesday. As is the practice with last days of Tests in England, the ICC will cut down the prices for the tickets on the reserve day. PTI reported that the highest-priced category – priced at GBP 150 – will be available for GBP 100 for the sixth day. The prices for the other two categories will go down from GBP 100 and GBP 75 to GBP 75 and GBP 50. Fans who had tickets for days one and four – the complete washouts, which stand to be refunded – will have first go at the tickets, and the remainder will be open to fans who missed out overall in the ticket ballot for the Test. The reserve day had become available the moment more than 150 minutes of play were lost on day one, but looking at how difficult the conditions were on days two and three, there had been a good chance it might not be needed. The rain on day four has all but made sure the final will go into day six. In such a case, the umpires will formally announce the sixth day 60 minutes before the close on day five.

Conte wanted Spurs to sign star now worth £62m but got Richarlison instead

Tottenham Hotspur are a club that have been blessed with a number of seriously talented players over the years.

The likes of Luka Modrić and Gareth Bale wowed fans in the early 2010s, Harry Kane broke through just a few years later, and Son Heung-min is now captaining the side and can still look incredibly dangerous at times.

However, the Lilywhites have also had their fair share of less successful signings over the years, and while there is still time to turn it around, Richarlison looks like he might be the club’s latest big-money flop.

Richarlison in anguish for Tottenham

What makes it worse is that just a few months before they signed the Brazilian, Antonio Conte was pushing the club to secure the services of a player who’s been on fire this season.

Richarlison's Spurs career

In June 2022, Tottenham spent a whopping £60m on Everton forward Richarlison, who had looked like a sensational talent for the Toffees over the last few years.

In all, the Brazilian attacker scored 53 goals and provided 13 assists in 152 appearances for the Merseysiders before moving down south, but unfortunately for the Lilywhites, his form did not follow him.

The 27-year-old’s first campaign in the capital saw him score just three goals and provide four assists in 25 appearances. While he did improve last year, racking up 12 goals and four assists in 31 games, it would be fair to say he has flattered to deceive so far.

However, while there is still time for him to improve, it does look like Postecoglou and Co have given up on him ever becoming the club’s starting number nine, as they splashed £65m on Dominic Solanke in the summer.

So, it’s hard to deny that when his fee and impact are taken into account, Richarlison’s move to Tottenham has been a failure, one made worse by the fact that a player the club tried to sign first is now tearing it up for a rival.

Spurs' failed pursuit of Luis Diaz

Yes, in the January transfer window, about six months before they signed Richarlison, Spurs were gunning to secure the services of Colombian international Luis Diaz.

According to an article from the Guardian at the time, Conte wanted to strengthen his team, and the then Porto star was one of the club’s key targets, so much so, in fact, that they made a £37.6m offer, which the club rejected.

Unfortunately for the North Londoners, this forced Liverpool into action, and just a few days later, they signed the tricky winger for an initial fee of £37.5m with £12.5m in further add-ons.

Since then, the 27-year-old dynamo has been through an awful lot on and off the pitch, and while there were some questions over his ability at points last season, he has started this year like a house on fire.

So far, the Barrancas-born star has scored five goals and provided one assist in just six games.

Unsurprisingly, such incredible form has seen his valuation soar as well, with Transfermarkt now valuing him at around €75m, which is about £62m.

Ultimately, while all clubs miss out on transfer targets, Diaz would have been sensational under Postecoglou, and while Richarlison could eventually prove to be worth his £60m fee, it feels like that ship has well and truly sailed now.

Southee + Boult + Wagner + Jamieson – 'it's got to be the best' attack, says Shane Jurgensen

“In terms of having the four of us in one time is pretty special” – Tim Southee

Deivarayan Muthu28-Jun-20211:48

Do New Zealand have the best bowling attack in the world right now?

Shane Jurgensen, the New Zealand bowling coach, has described winning the inaugural World Test Championship (WTC) as his “greatest coaching achievement”.”I think for me this is about, for all of New Zealand really, from people that have always gone to [put] the extra effort from New Zealand Cricket’s staff, board, sponsors, the caterers at the ground we play at, the curators at all the grounds, the physios, the domestic coaches and the CEOs – everyone has had an input into this somewhere and a valuable contribution and it really means a lot to us now,” he said. “I think, at times, I’ve been really emotional in my room, and also for me personally my wife because she puts up with me being away a lot. For me, personally, this is my greatest coaching achievement.”Related

Southee: 'We have that right to play more Test cricket'

Jurgensen, a journeyman cricketer who has held coaching roles with Bangladesh, Fiji, Scotland, and New Zealand after leaving the game, revealed that he was crying tears of joy and rewatching New Zealand’s sixth-day final victory during MIQ (Managed Isolation Quarantine).”I’ve seen a few highlights. I’ve sort of been reading a lot and watching a bit on YouTube, so looking at it from all different angles,” Jurgensen said. “But for me what is different this time is the reflection on me personally and also you know for me in my area – the bowling unit what they have achieved… I think the morning of the last day to be able to make the vital breakthroughs with Kyle [Jamieson] and Tim [Southee] and Trent [Boult]. It was a fantastic effort to put ourselves in a position to chase a reasonably low total.”Oh! I’ve cried. I’ve cried a few times – probably every day since the win. You sort of sit there and then you go: ‘Wow! World Test champions’. There’s been some fantastic players over a number of years who have played for this team. I’ve just had Iain O’Brien on the phone actually telling me that he’s watched the end of it twice and cried. I’ve had Gav [Gavin] Larsen, our selector who works really hard behind the scenes, he called it his best day in cricket and that’s a guy that played a lot for New Zealand and you know it means a lot.”Jurgensen delivered a glowing appraisal of the New Zealand attack, reckoning they were the best in the world, having been there and done that over a period of time.Tim Southee and Shane Jurgensen during a training session at the NZC High-Performance Centre•Getty Images

“I think so. I’ve been thinking that [New Zealand have the best attack] for a while. So it’s just me and my role and belief in these bowlers; what they bring to us as a team and the challenges they have overseas,” he said. “But, I think they are and we can probably strongly say that right now – this hasn’t been a fluke and it has been happening for a long time. As I said, the belief in the bowling group – how they plan, how fit they are, how strong they are and how much they believe in each other. The trust is amazing and we got four or five bowlers in the final, but all do different things.”Kyle’s height and accuracy, to be able to swing it both ways at good pace. Tim’s accuracy, new-ball execution – unbelievable. He can adapt to use the crease – over and around – to left-handers and right-handers. We know Trent’s ability with the new ball, but he took wickets with the old ball; he’s been doing that for a while, so it’s nothing new for me and the team. We know that Neil [Wagner] makes people uncomfortable on the back foot and the front foot with the lengths he bowls, but he’s now getting guys out like Trent. So, he’s building up a different skillset to be able to swing the ball both ways and seam it. Colin [de Grandhomme] is 125 [kph] and accurate; he bowls higher than 125, so it’s got to be up there… it’s got to be the best for me and they are proving it.”Southee also hailed the versatility in the attack, saying the relentless pressure generated by the pack made the difference. “I guess you look at New Zealand history, you’ve had periods where you’ve had one or two good bowlers, obviously Richard Hadlee, and then Dan Vettori doing his thing, sort of chipped in with the likes of Chris Martin and a number of other guys along the way, but I guess in terms of having the four of us in one time is pretty special,” Southee said. “Not only the four of us but also the work de Grandhomme does in and around the pace bowlers as well, and also Matt Henry has chipped in during that England series as well, so I think just to have four of us, three of us with an excess of 200 Test wickets, is pretty special, and probably a once-in-a-lifetime sort of experience for New Zealand cricket.”So giving a few kids around New Zealand the inspiration to grow up and want to be bowlers rather than just batters, so yeah, it’s been an absolute pleasure to be a part of, and hopefully we can continue to do great things for this side in the years to come.”Jamieson broke open the game when he sent back Pujara and Kohli on the final morning•ICC/Getty Images

New Zealand’s spin stocks, as they prepare for tours of Bangladesh, Pakistan and India, with the T20 World Cup thrown in, have been a topic of discussion, especially with the team not fielding even one spinner for the WTC final. Left-armer Ajaz Patel has re-established himself as New Zealand’s No. 1 spinner, but there are Mitchell Santner, Will Somerville, Rachin Ravindra and Michael Rippon around as options.”Seeing what Ajaz did against England was absolutely fantastic,” Jurgensen said. “I was so excited for Ajaz to get that opportunity at Edgbaston against England to see him get wickets in both innings – it was sort of real confidence for him and also for us to again to say we have the subcontinent tours coming up and we have got Ajaz, Will and Rachin. There are plenty of options. Rippon from Otago will qualify soon and there’s plenty of guys putting up their hands. So, there’s going to be some tough selections coming up. So, it’s a nice position to be in and we have to prepare accordingly like we always do with our marquee and our camps and give it our best shot.”New Zealand’s overall depth was on display at Edgbaston where they made six changes, keeping the WTC final in mind, but they still came out on top.”Obviously, winning the final was the standout, but to see those guys come in and literally fit like a glove, and do their roles – it was just great to see,” Jurgensen said. “So, satisfying for our systems – the A programme, the winter-training squad, the domestic development of players and the support that we get from coaches, high-performance managers and CEOs. It’s a real fantastic tick in the box for what’s going on now in New Zealand cricket.”
