Sheffield Wednesday turn down approach to sell "very good" 27 y/o this week

Sheffield Wednesday are believed to have turned down an approach for a “very good” player who Danny Rohl values, according to a fresh transfer update.

Sheffield Wednesday news

The Owls are badly in need of finding some form in the Championship, even though they made it into the fourth round of the EFL Cup midweek, following their 1-0 win away to Blackpool.

In the league, Rohl’s side haven’t tasted victory since thumping Plymouth Argyle on the opening weekend of the season, losing their next three games in the competition after that, before drawing 1-1 at home to Queens Park Rangers last weekend. The manner of that result was hugely disappointing, however, given the ludicrous nature of the visitors’ scrambled last-gasp equaliser.

On Saturday, Wednesday make the trip to a Luton Town side who are only one place ahead of them in the table, and on the same number of points, arguably underperforming since their return to the Championship from the Premier League.

Away from the league action, transfer rumours have continued to emerge regarding the Owls, too, with youngster Sam Reed linked with a move away from Hillsborough on loan. He is wanted by National League clubs, who will be able to sign him outside the summer transfer window. Now, another exit update has also dropped with another player.

Sheffield Wednesday turn down approach for "very good" ace

According to a new update from The Star, Sheffield Wednesday have turned down an approach from Maccabi Tel Aviv for the signing of Pol Valentin this week, with contact made between the two clubs.

The report says that the Europa League side “had been keeping tabs on the full back’s progress and were considering making an offer” prior to the Israeli transfer window closing, but the Owls “shut it down”.

Pol Valentin for Sheffield Wednesday.

Keeping hold of Valentin makes complete sense for Wednesday even if he isn’t a vital player, with Rohl even stating that earlier this week, saying: “He is part of my squad. We need the competition at the right full-back position. That’s for me, no. No question mark.”

The 27-year-old has been a solid addition since arriving at Hillsborough last summer, providing competition at right-back and making a total of 48 appearances to date.

Admittedly, he has been limited to only one Championship start in 2024/25 to date, but he has been involved in every match in the competition, showing that he is an important squad figure. Meanwhile, former Wednesday manager Xisco Munoz once lauded his qualities, having brought him to the club:

“He has very good intensity. I know a lot about Pol, not only his capacity as a footballer but a personality as well and this is very good. This is important because I know exactly what he can give to the team. He was with me when he was very young with Gimnastic and I know how he has progressed.”

Rohl a fan: Clubs keen to sign Sheffield Wednesday 21 y/o on loan right now

The Owls could sanction the move.

Valentin may understandably be keen for more playing time, but given the number of fixtures this season, he may soon get more starts to his name, dovetailing with the likes of Yan Valery and Liam Palmer in the process.

Suryakumar Yadav: How I build from here is all in my hands

He has made use of all chances at international level and wants to improve at getting deep in the innings

Saurabh Somani24-Jul-20214:04

India series reviews – ‘Suryakumar the biggest takeaway’

Suryakumar Yadav is only five-innings-old in international cricket. You wouldn’t know that, looking at him bat in any of those games. He’s looked nerve-less, decisive and crisp in his stroke-play, calm and confident in his batting.Having made his debut when already past 30 has meant, perhaps, that Yadav might not have the same length of international cricket to look forward to that the Prithvi Shaws and Ishan Kishans have, but it’s also meant he’s come into international cricket with a greater understanding of his game. He made an immediate impact in the T20Is against England in March, and given a go in the ODI side, he’s returned a Player-of-the-Series performance against Sri Lanka.India lost the third one-dayer, but took the series 2-1, and Yadav played a key hand in each of the three games. Starting out in his career, Yadav has got the fine balance of soaking it all in after years of waiting for it, versus the hunger because of a wait that lasted as long as it did.”Obviously, everyone dreams of playing for India. It has been a lot of effort, lot of grind, lot of patience behind this,” Yadav said after the third ODI against Sri Lanka. “It has been worth the wait, and I’m really happy about it. From here on, how I build it is all in my hands. I’m really excited for the journey ahead.”Yadav had always been a batter with plenty of sparkle. But he pinpointed returning to Mumbai Indians in 2018 as the turning point, after which his game has gone to a new level. It’s borne out by the numbers too. Since the 2018-19 season, Yadav has averaged 55.56 in List A cricket, at a strike rate of 131.88. In T20 cricket, his average has been 37.60 at a strike rate of 147.30.”I’ve always been batting the same way as I am now,” Yadav said. “But yes, after I came to Mumbai Indians in 2018, things started changing a bit. I got to know what my responsibility is, how do I go about my game, how can I take it one step ahead. That’s when I started practicing even more. Talked to all the players who knew me really well from the last five-six years.”Yadav’s scores in the ODIs, 31*, 53, and 40 – all scored at better than a run-a-ball – point to how quickly he got into the groove, although he did express disappointment at not carrying on in the second and third games. He was looking in command during the second game, steering India’s chase after half the side had been out, when one moment of indecision meant he was trapped in front. While India won that match on the back of Deepak Chahar’s heroics with the bat, Yadav’s fall in the third ODI – he was once again the key wicket – meant there was no similar recovery.”I’m disappointed about that,” Yadav said. “The way I started in the first game, I got good confidence. In the second game, it was the perfect situation to win a game for the team. But that time too, it was not the way I play and I got out. Really disappointed with that. In the third game too, there was a good opportunity today to hold one end and try and play till the end, but couldn’t do it. That’s two things I’m really keeping in mind, how do I build from here? But that’s how you learn and move forward.”It’s perhaps a sign of the new-found consistency that Yadav has found in his game. He’s in a patch of form where he’s not had a ‘bad’ season, but cutting down on failures has not come at the expense of any inventiveness. Yadav still executes the ramps, the paddle-scoops, the drives, the flicks through the on-side while seemingly off balance.”I’ve been a Mumbai boy,” he said. “Growing up in Mumbai, the types of pitches you get in club games and in domestic cricket are very challenging. So there you automatically think what strokes you have to play on those kinds of wickets, and the same thing I’ve been carrying to the international stage. I’ll be doing the same thing. Just trying to keep things simple, following my routines.”The game remains the same. There’s no change in the game, you play against any team, any level, you just have to go out and do the same things. What I do in domestic cricket, what I do in the nets, I try and do the same thing be it IPL, be it an international game. I just like to be myself. I like to go out there and enjoy. You must have seen, I just like to run when I get an opportunity to bat. I really enjoy that moment.”For now, Yadav is doing the running, and ensuring that even when India field a full-strength team, he’s in serious contention to be part of it, whether in ODIs or T20Is. Like he said, how he builds his career is in his hands. So far, those hands have done a pretty good job.

What Man City’s scouts now think about Bruno Guimarães after Newcastle draw

Heading into 2025, Manchester City’s top concern is whether to replace injured superstar Rodri internally or with a fresh face in the transfer market, and the latest reports have revealed their opinion about Newcastle star Bruno Guimarães.

Man City plotting swoop for £51m-rated star as possible Rodri replacement

Man City are considering their options as they decide whether to replace Rodri or not.

ByBrett Worthington Oct 2, 2024 Rodri replacements wanted at the Etihad

The Blues have had to deal with missing Kevin de Bruyne for large parts of the seasons in years gone by, but they have never had to deal with the long-term absence of Rodri. His injury is a big blow to Pep Guardiola, as he is seen as the key man in what the team does from back to front.

Therefore, given what they are going to miss, City may look to try and find a replacement, and they have already been linked with a few options. Inter Milan midfielder Nicolo Barella emerged as a potential transfer target for City earlier this week. As well as Barella, Atalanta’s Ederson is the latest name to be linked with a move to the Etihad.

But City may also find that a replacement for Rodri is already at the club, as they have Mateo Kovacic, who Guardiola is said to be a “big fan of” and has already played an important role this season. Meanwhile, there is also Rico Lewis, who can operate at full-back as well as in midfield, and the young man came in for huge praise from his manager after his performance in the Champions League on Tuesday night – and for helping to fill the void left by Rodri.

Manchester City defender Rico Lewis.

Guardiola said of Lewis: “The way he’s playing, no words. He does everything. Making an assist and defending, he’s strong. Of course he has to improve with things, but he’s playing at the highest level.”

It appears that Guardiola and City are keeping their options open when it comes to replacing Rodri, as they are now being linked with a new player.

Man City plotting transfer swoop on £71m-rated Newcastle United star

According to reports from Spain relayed by The Hard Tackle, Manchester City are interested in signing Bruno Guimarães from Newcastle United. The Brazilian is seen as a potential replacement for Rodri, and his recent performances against the Blues have caught their attention.

The Blues played out a 1-1 draw with the Magpies last weekend, and Guimarães is said to have impressed City’s scouts and coaches, with his quality and leadership skills being on show. Meanwhile, his ability to “balance the midfield,” together with his endurance, makes him an “attractive” asset for City, as they look for a player with similar ability to Rodri.

However, if Bruno is going to leave Newcastle, it will not be for cheap, as the Magpies paid around 42 million euros, which is roughly £35 million, to bring him to England, and any offer will likely need to exceed that by a huge margin.

He is currently valued at 85 million euros, which is roughly £71 million, a significant rise from what Newcastle paid, and his £100m release clause expired in the summer. The 26-year-old is eight games away from 100 appearances in the Premier League and Newcastle will be hoping the games to come are all in a black and white shirt, as he is contracted to St. James’ Park until the summer of 2028.

Jake Lintott savours 'special feeling' as Hundred rise continues

Wristspinner picked as a wildcard is now Southern Brave’s leading wicket-taker

Matt Roller17-Aug-2021

Jake Lintott celebrates a breakthrough with Tymal Mills•Getty Images

The consensus after the Hundred’s initial draft in October 2019 was clear: Southern Brave were the favourites. They had signed a strong local core supplemented by some star overseas players, and more than anything had a world-class pace attack comprising Jofra Archer, Chris Jordan, Tymal Mills and Andre Russell.Jake Lintott, the bald, stocky, Somerset-born left-arm wristspinner, had not even registered for the draft. The last of his four professional T20 appearances had come more than a year previously and while he was coming off the back of a good season for Warwickshire’s seconds, Wiltshire and Clevedon CC, that was never going to be enough to see him picked in a Hundred squad.Nearly two years later, Lintott is Brave’s leading wicket-taker in the tournament’s first season, with 10 in seven games – only Adil Rashid and Rashid Khan have more across the men’s competition. Russell withdrew, Archer was ruled out through injury, and while Mills and Jordan have both been exceptional at the death, it has been Lintott who has led the way, setting up their five-match winning streak and qualification for the knockout stages with his skill through the middle of an innings.Lintott’s late rise after years of hard graft has led his Warwickshire team-mate Carlos Brathwaite to dub him “cricket’s Jamie Vardy” and his success lends hope to all late developers. He was 27 and a veteran of hundreds of second-team fixtures across several different counties when Warwickshire offered him a contract for last summer’s Blast in the days before the tournament; he took 10 wickets with an economy rate of 6.30 across his nine games. That success led to a full-time deal signed earlier this year, which he has juggled with his role as head of cricket at Queen’s College, Taunton. “I’ve had no days off since April,” he laughed in mid-June, and his 15 wickets this season – with another miserly economy rate of 6.97 – backed up his previous performances. It meant that when Southern Brave were looking for a wristspinner in the wildcard draft to fill the gap left in their squad by Shadab Khan’s unavailability, Lintott’s name was front and centre. “We looked at local wristspinners and went through the domestic season to look at guys who had come through in the last couple of years,” Mahela Jayawardene, their head coach, explained.”We wanted to know about his character as well,” he said. “Obviously it’s a big stepping stone for him, handling the pressure of playing in front of big crowds.” Following a character reference from Graeme Welch – Warwickshire’s bowling coach, and one of Brave’s assistants – they decided to take a punt on him. They lacked variety in their opening game when they picked two slow left-armers in Danny Briggs and Liam Dawson, so Lintott came in for game two.Since then he has racked up an impressive list of victims: Tom Banton (twice), Finn Allen, Moeen Ali, Colin Ackermann, Harry Brook and Ian Cockbain, before adding Sam Billings, Laurie Evans and Tom Curran in the qualification decider against Oval Invincibles on Monday night, when his 20 balls cost only 14 runs. Those figures stood in stark contrast to Invincibles’ overseas players Sunil Narine and Tabraiz Shamsi, who returned 0 for 61 across 40 balls between them.”I was really chuffed to contribute to a win,” Lintott said afterwards. “I felt like our spinners did a decent job and focused on doing a job with our lengths. Previously [at the Ageas Bowl] I’ve been a little full at times which has meant getting hit, so I tried to be really clinical with lengths and bowled a lot of googlies – probably about 80% tonight – to try and go across them as much as possible.”I’m pretty meticulous in planning. Me and Graeme Welch are tightly knit and do a lot of work together looking at batters’ strengths. I found, looking at the Oval guys, that they were very much leg-side dominant and liked to hit towards midwicket a lot, so I was trying to get the ball going across them as much as possible and be real clinical with my lengths.”Heading into the knockout stages, Lintott has a chance to reinforce his status as one of the unlikely stars of the Hundred’s first season, and he credits the relaxed atmosphere that Jayawardene has cultivated as a key factor in his success. Brave have a simple enough formula, Lintott bowling in tandem with his Warwickshire team-mate Briggs through the middle of the innings to tie teams down before Jordan and Mills take over at the death, but it has served them well so far.”I wasn’t in the draft for the initial competition, so that shows you how surreal the last 18 months have been,” Lintott said. “I have to pinch myself, really. It’s been an amazing year and a half for me, and moments like tonight are pretty special.”I knew that I’d done well in the T20 [Blast] and my plan was always to give myself the best opportunity [in the wildcard draft]. Luckily, Southern Brave were looking for a wristspinner and that opportunity arose. To play in front of full houses – I’ve not done that before because of Covid – is a pretty special feeling.”The best thing to take from this is just the players that you’re playing with and the learning that goes on when you’re training with them. The most impressive thing for me is that everyone in this group is so supportive and has backed me 100%. The reason I’ve done well with Warwickshire is that I’ve felt backed for the first time in my life, and I feel exactly the same here. It’s been really good – a privilege to be part of.

5 reasons the FA chose Thomas Tuchel as England manager

England have their new manager. It has been confirmed by the Football Association that former Chelsea and Bayern Munich boss Thomas Tuchel has agreed a deal to succeed Gareth Southgate as Three Lions boss.

Southgate stepped down from the role after the final of this summer’s European Championship, which England lost 2-1 to Spain.

Tuchel was formally unveiled as England manager on 16th October at Wembley Stadium. In taking the England job, Tuchel becomes only the third non-British permanent manager of the England men’s team after Sven-Goran Eriksson and Fabio Capello.

10 England players who can shine under Thomas Tuchel

The German will be planning for the 2026 World Cup.

ByCharlie Smith Oct 16, 2024

“We are thrilled to have hired Thomas Tuchel, one of the best coaches in the world,” said FA CEO Mark Bullingham.

“Since Gareth resigned, we have worked through the candidate pool, meeting a number of coaches and evaluating them against that criteria. Thomas was very impressive and stood out with his vast expertise and his drive,” he added.

Speaking about the appointment of the German, former England striker Alan Shearer called it a “bold move”.

Bold it most certainly is, but appointing Tuchel as England’s new manager also makes perfect sense. Here’s why…

1 He's a serial winner

For all their progress under Gareth Southgate, one thing England were never able to do under his tutelage was win a trophy. Luckily, Tuchel has plenty of experience in that area.

The 51-year-old has won trophies with all four of his previous clubs. While in charge of Borussia Dortmund, he guided the team to their first German Cup in five years, while at Paris Saint-Germain, he won back-to-back Ligue 1 titles, including a domestic treble in his second season.

Most famously, he later guided Chelsea to a Champions League triumph, before winning the Bundesliga with Bayern.

If England want to win another major trophy, they’ll need a winner in charge. Tuchel is certainly that.

2 Tuchel is a cup specialist

Knockout football is, of course, very different to domestic football.

Each game comes with more pressure, more stress, and generally, a bit more excitement – with players knowing that a single mistake can end their team’s run early, but a single moment of genius can make them a hero.

Tuchel is a master of knockout football and has overperformed with squads that weren’t necessarily among the favourites to succeed.

As mentioned, he won the German Cup with Dortmund and the Champions League with Chelsea – conceding just two goals in the knockout stages, having taken over from Frank Lampard mid-season.

He also took PSG to their first Champions League final, narrowly losing to future employers Bayern in the final.

And while his record at Wembley is not exactly incredible, Tuchel also reached three cup finals in England, while also bringing the Super Cup and Club World Cup to Stamford Bridge.

3 He's embraced England's football culture

The FA have generally appointed English managers in the past because they are, well, English. They speak the language and have experience of dealing with English players and clubs.

Yes, Tuchel is German, but he ticks both of those boxes nevertheless.

His English is near-perfect – if not perfect, full stop. This means he, unlike previous foreign England managers (looking at you, Fabio Capello), will be able to communicate with the players seamlessly.

Meanwhile, his time at Chelsea will have stood him in good stead when it comes to the FA giving him the job.

“He’s an avowed Anglophile,” German football reporter Raphael Honigstein told talkSPORT of Tuchel. “He loves English football, loves English players.”

Honigstein added: “For him, I think it’s a bit of a dream move. As I said, he has a real passion for English football.”

4 He can get the best out of Harry Kane

One of the English players Tuchel has experience of managing is Three Lions captain Harry Kane, who he brought to Bayern and was his leading man for the 2023/24 season – at least, before Tuchel left the club in April.

Under Tuchel, Kane scored 44 goals and provided 12 assists in just 45 games, scoring a goal every 89 minutes. That’s the best ratio the English striker has ever produced under any manager of his career.

Despite being England’s all-time record goalscorer, Kane has generally struggled to replicate the killer instincts he has shown for his clubs on the international stage – especially at big tournaments, with the ex-Spurs ace coming under fire during Euro 2024.

Tuchel got the best out of Kane at Bayern, so he can hopefully help him do the same for his country. Speaking about working with Kane in January 2024, Tuchel told bundesliga.com: “It’s just a gift, I feel very privileged to be his coach.”

5 Tuchel was the best available option

There has been a plethora of names linked with the England job since Southgate stepped down after Euro 2024.

Among those that were linked with the vacancy were Lee Carsley, who has stepped in as interim boss and will remain in charge for England’s next two games, along with Newcastle manager Eddie Howe and former Chelsea boss Graham Potter. Pep Guardiola and Jurgen Klopp were also linked with the role.

Looking at that list of candidates alongside Tuchel, the German was, and is, the clear choice for the job, not only because of his credentials, but also his availability.

None of Carsley, Howe, or Potter have the same experience at the highest level as Tuchel, nor have they won the kind of trophies Tuchel has.

Guardiola and Klopp matched Tuchel in those departments, but with Guardiola still tied to Manchester City for another year and Jurgen Klopp having recently agreed to take a new job with Red Bull, Tuchel was arguably the only remaining, qualified candidate.

Former England defender Micah Richards agrees. “The point is we don’t have an English candidate strong enough to take that job, that’s one of the most interesting things,” he said on The Rest is Football podcast.

“I was of the opinion that we don’t need an English manager, just go out and get the best person for the job,” he added. “I think Tuchel is an outstanding manager, a proven winner.”
