Michael Vaughan admits involvement in Rafiq report, denies racist comments

Former England Ashes-winning captain denies he abused Rafiq during county match

Michael Vaughan, the captain of England’s 2005 Ashes-winning team, has admitted that he is the former player implicated in the investigation into Azeem Rafiq’s allegations of institutional racism at Yorkshire.Vaughan, who represented the county from 1991 until his retirement in 2009, used his column in The Telegraph to deny Rafiq’s claims that, in his final season with the club, he had told Rafiq and two other Asian players that there are “too many of you lot, we need to do something about it”.The alleged incident occurred as Yorkshire were taking the field during a match against Nottinghamshire in 2009, Rafiq’s maiden season as a professional. In his column Vaughan told how he was approached 11 years later, in December 2020, to speak to the panel tasked with investigating the player’s claims of racism at the club.”This hit me very hard,” Vaughan wrote. “It was like being struck over the head with a brick. I have been involved in cricket for 30 years and never once been accused of any remotely similar incident or disciplinary offence as a player or commentator.”I completely and categorically deny that I ever said those words,” he added. “I responded to the panel by saying I was gobsmacked … It was 11 years after the alleged event. Nothing at all was raised or said at the time of the game in question, or at any stage over the next 11 years until the night before I was asked to speak to the inquiry.”Vaughan’s revelation comes 24 hours after his former team-mate Gary Ballance admitted, via a statement issued by Yorkshire, that he had been the player who had used the racial slur “P**i” in conversations with Rafiq.Related

Nike cancel kit sponsorship in latest blow to Yorkshire

That detail, reported by ESPNcricinfo, triggered a wave of condemnaton, including from the government minister Sajid Javid, which has since culminated in Yorkshire’s hierarchy being called before a DCMS select committee hearing on November 16, and a tranche of club partners, including kit suppliers Nike and stadium sponsor Emerald, severing their ties with the club.”As a lover of cricket and Yorkshire, and someone who has been a fan of Rafiq, it has been difficult to hear about the painful experiences he endured during his time at the club,” Vaughan added.”But as difficult as that process has been, I recognise that it is equally necessary. At an individual level, it is clear that Azeem has endured a lot. It is not only right but essential that his experiences and his perspective are heard. There are unquestionably lessons to be learned.”The statements made by Gary Ballance and others have laid bare awkward but necessary questions for cricket to answer regarding how dressing rooms, teams and individuals function in the modern era.”Vaughan added that he had been aware for some time that he had been named in the report, and had divulged as much to his BBC colleagues in the summer.”I felt uncomfortable that it could emerge and they would be asked some awkward questions,” he wrote. “Similarly, I am speaking now because it is right for people to hear my side and that I completely deny the allegations.”I accept Yorkshire have dealt with this terribly. They will be honest enough to admit that. It is a good cricket club and it is close to my heart. I hope I can be part of the movement to rebrand the club and people will eventually look back on this time and say it changed for the better.”I played professional cricket for 18 years between 1991 and 2009. All players in that period are now looking back on things that were said and admit they would not say them now. I never heard racist abuse but Yorkshire was a hard dressing room. As a second team player we had to knock on the dressing room door before entering. If you had a big nose, were bald or carried a bit of weight they would be commented on.”I was the first non-Yorkshire born player to play for the county and that was commented on a lot. I am not comparing those examples with racism but they are examples of previously commonplace behaviour which is unacceptable now. We cannot change what was said or happened in dressing rooms 10-15 years ago but we can learn from it.”

Aston Villa can make Duran more unplayable by signing "insanely good" star

Over the course of the Premier League era, Aston Villa have had some exceptional strikers lead the line. Perhaps the best of the bunch was Dwight Yorke, who played for the Villans between 1990 and 1998 before departing to Manchester United. Another former Red Devil who also represented the Midlands side was Dion Dublin, who played for the club between 1998 and 2004.

In more recent years, Christian Benteke was one of the best strikers at Villa Park, scoring 49 times in 101 games. Nowadays, Ollie Watkins is the man of the moment upfront for Unai Emery’s side. The Englishman has already scored 75 goals and has 29 assists in 181 games in Claret and Blue.

There is another player who is in fine goalscoring form in the current Villa side. That man is Jhon Duran.

Duran’s Villa stats

The rise to the top has been quite something for 20-year-old Duran. Since he joined in a £18m deal from MLS side Chicago Fire in 2023, the Colombian has gone on a phenomenal run of goalscoring form to become one of the Premier League’s deadliest strikers.

The Villans’ number nine has already got a superb record in that famous Claret and Blue shirt. In 63 games, he has 16 goals, but what makes it most incredible is the number of minutes he has played.

Duran has featured for just 1666 minutes so far, equivalent to 18.5 full 90-minute games, meaning his goal tally is proportional to almost one goal per game.

This campaign has been no different for the deadly centre-forward. Already, the Colombia international has scored eight times in 14 games. That includes four in nine Premier League games and two in three Champions League games.

According to FBref, the former Chicago Fire attacker ranks 4th across Europe’s big five leagues for the most goals per 90 minutes with 1.48. That only factored in players who have played the equivalent of 90 minutes once or more. That shows exactly how deadly Duran has been in this campaign.

Jhon Duran

Incredibly, Villa are targeting a winger who could join the club and make the young striker even deadlier than he already is.

Aston Villa transfer news

The player in question here is Barcelona and Spain winger Ferran Torres. According to reports from Spain earlier this week, via London World, the Villans are set to go head-to-head with Arsenal for the winger’s signature. The report suggests that both clubs are ready to pay ‘a reasonable price’ in order to sign the Euro 2024 winner.

24-year-old winger Torres has already played Premier League football. He spent 18 months at Manchester City before moving to Barca for £46.7m upfront and a further £8.5m in add-ons in 2022. During his time at the Etihad Stadium, the winger played 43 games, scoring 16 times and grabbing four assists.

He has performed well for La Liga giants Barca, too, so it is perhaps surprising they are willing to part ways with him. He has 41 goal involvements in 123 games on the Spanish coast and has been an important player for Hansi Flick as they have dominated both domestically and in the Champions League.

Barcelona winger Ferran Torres.

Should Villa sign the winger this summer, he could well form a brilliant partnership with Duran. Typically throughout his career, the 24-year-old has developed a strong understanding with the centre-forward of his side. He has combined more times for a goal with Robert Lewandowski than any other player, with six.

This is certainly a trend that could continue at Villa Park. Duran is already one of the deadliest strikers in Europe, judging by both the number of goals he has scored and the underlying statistics. With the Barcelona number seven’s habit of forming dangerous partnerships with the strikers of his team, it is something that could well continue to happen.

Signing the “insanely good” attacker, as football talent scout Jacek Kulig described him, could be an excellent piece of business from Villa. Not only would they be adding a quality winger to their attack, but Torres could make Duran even more unplayable and help them continue to fight for top four spots in the Premier League.

Dawid Malan: 'It is totally different bounce to what you're used to' in Sharjah

“If we play in the semi-final on a wicket that maybe is not a 180 wicket, then it is a good learning curve for us”

Matt Roller03-Nov-2021

Sharjah was paradise for batters in last year’s IPL to the extent that there is an Uber pick-up location in the S117 highway that runs next to the ground marked as ‘AB de Villiers’s six vs KKR’. In a dozen games there across the course of the season, there were an average of 8.87 runs per over, and as evidenced by Rajasthan Royals hauling in a target of 224 against Punjab Kings, no total was safe. But conditions at the ground have changed markedly since the pitches were relaid earlier this year. In IPL 2021, the average runs per over plummeted to 7.00, with a slight increase to 7.33 in the eight matches there to date in this men’s T20 World Cup. For England’s batters, adapting to the low bounce proved tough in their first game there against Sri Lanka on Monday night, and they are expecting a similar challenge on Saturday against South Africa.”Usually when you rock up at Sharjah, you’re thinking ‘runs’ as a batter,” Dawid Malan, who had previously played at the venue in the PSL and the T10, said on Tuesday. “You’re really looking forward to that one. But the wickets, since they’ve been relaid, have been totally different and it looks really tough to bat on. I only faced eight balls in the last game but it is totally different bounce to what you’re used to.Malan on Rafiq case

Dawid Malan became the first Yorkshire player to address the club’s report into Azeem Rafiq’s racism claims since the UK government’s intervention.

“Danny [Reuben, England’s media manager] mentioned to me this morning there was something on Cricinfo, which I stay off for various reasons during tournaments and things,” he said.

“It is very serious stuff. I don’t think there is any place for discrimination in the game and it’s something that can hopefully be eradicated.

“We’re sitting here just like everyone else without much information apart from what pops up every now and again in articles and things – we’re pretty much in the dark as much as everyone else.”

“We haven’t trained in Sharjah or got used to those conditions in training because all our training had been done in Dubai. Everyone said they used to be 180-220 wickets but we had to adjust. Early on, we probably thought the wicket was better than it was – the new ball probably came on a bit better for the first two overs or so. After that, it got lower and harder to bat on. We have one more game in Sharjah and then if we play in the semi-final on a wicket that maybe is not a 180 wicket, then it is a good learning curve for us.”The two games we’ve had at Dubai, it didn’t really feel like there was too much dew, but the one at Sharjah was really dewy for whatever reason. We know that if you bat first, if it’s a 150 wicket you probably know you have to get 160 – probably add 10 or 15 runs. In the last game, the bowlers definitely felt that the wicket got slightly better. Whether that was the wicket or the ball because of the dew or the way the ball skidded on slightly more, I don’t know… but it definitely is more of an advantage batting second in these conditions.”Dawid Malan scored an unbeaten 99 last time England played South Africa•Getty Images

Like several England batters, Malan has had limited time in the middle in the World Cup to date: he was not used against West Indies as England promoted their six-hitters in pursuit of a net-run-rate boost, and has made 28 not out, 8 and 6 in his three innings since.Malan made a brilliant 99 not out off 47 balls last time England played South Africa, their next opponents but has had a leaner patch of late, averaging 25.83 with a strike rate of 112.72 in his 14 T20I innings since then which resulted in him losing his No. 1 ICC ranking on Tuesday. He said that he would take confidence from his previous success against South Africa – he has three fifties in five innings against them – but said that playing against them in Sharjah would be “a different challenge”.”The conditions we had out in South Africa and when I played in Cardiff against them [on debut in 2017] are totally different to the ones that we’re going to have here,” Malan said. “They’re obviously a really strong team and they’ve got some fantastic bowlers, especially at Sharjah, with the way that [Anrich] Nortje and [Kagiso] Rabada bowl their lengths when they bowl there. On a slower wicket that keeps slightly low, I think that suits them quite a lot but I hope that what I’ve done in the past against them, I can take that forward into this game with what I’ve learned from facing their bowlers and how I’ve gone about scoring against them.”I’d have loved to have gone out and batted [against West Indies] but ultimately the aim of this team is to win games of cricket and it doesn’t matter who does that. We got our [net] run rate up there, which was good, we won the game, and that’s all that matter.”I feel all right. Obviously, the first game I didn’t bat, second and third games just had to finish it and was disappointed I got out in that third game. And then in the last game I had a bit of time to bat so disappointed to miss out there. But I feel like I’m hitting the ball well – I just need to get a bit of time in the middle and get a score to contribute.”

West Brom’s "special" loan star has seen his value soar 2316% since leaving

The international break could well have come at the perfect time for Carlos Corberan’s West Bromwich Albion, who had been stuttering as of late in the Championship.

Before the break got underway, however, the Baggies did just about get the better of Hull City on their travels, as both Josh Maja and Karlan Grant delivered the goods in a slender 2-1 away win, but that was West Brom’s first victory in nine games.

There was a lot of worry in the air that the wheels had already come off their campaign, therefore, but Corberan is a safe pair of hands and he should be able to get his team out of this sticky patch.

West Brom didn’t really utilise the loan market this summer to improve their squad, away from adding in the likes of Lewis Dobbin who have barely featured, with the West Midlands side striking gold in the past when adding in some top-quality loanees.

Memorable West Brom loanees

The first player that will immediately pop into a West Brom fan’s head is Romelu Lukaku, as the potent Belgian striker called the Hawthorns home for one season right at the start of his fledging playing days.

The well-travelled centre-forward would bag a mightily impressive 17 goals from 38 clashes for the Baggies during the 2012/13 campaign, going down as a fantastic loan purchase for the then Premier League outfit subsequently.

Lukaku isn’t the only household name that can thank West Brom for gifting them a platform to shine so early on into their career, with Atletico Madrid midfielder Conor Gallagher also on the books of the Baggies once upon a time, alongside the likes of defensive rock Tosin Adarabioyo before he signed for Chelsea.

But, there is another loan star who has come on significant leaps and bounds this season for his Premier League side, who had also established himself as a firm fan’s favourite during a short but sweet spell in the West Midlands.

Harvey Barnes' career since leaving West Brom

Harvey Barnes, before going on to become an important part of the jigsaw under Eddie Howe at Newcastle United, was transported out on loan to West Brom, away from his parent employers Leicester City.

Already fresh off a formative loan stint at Barnsley in the EFL, the “special” winger – as he was once labelled by analyst Statman Dave – took the Championship by storm donning his new Baggies kit, with nine goals and eight assists coming his way from 28 outings.

As a result of firing home sublime strikes like this one during his stint at the Hawthorns, Barnes would eventually go on to make a name for himself back at the Foxes, with 77 goal contributions tallied up from 187 total games before Newcastle swooped in to land him last year.

The Magpies must feel quite smug with themselves that they decided to pick up Barnes now, capitalising on Leicester’s relegation down to the Championship in the process, when you consider his sparkling output so far this season.

Looking at the table above, Barnes has been an effective weapon for Howe and Co to rely on, with the ex-Leicester man firing home four goals and picking up one assist from 11 league games, despite only averaging 46 minutes per clash.

Howe even described his qualities as “unbounded” after an audacious strike versus Wolverhampton Wanderers in September, with Barnes’ transfer value now all the way up at £29m – according to Transfermarkt – when his price tag only stood at a low £1.2m during his loan stint, representing a rise of 2316%.

West Brom fans will hope their team can take on Barnes’ side next season, but only if their promotion dreams finally become a reality, with their team’s wobbly form having to be corrected.

Women's Ashes walks Covid tightrope ahead of World Cup

The series will be played under tight protocols to try and protect the squads before heading to New Zealand

The proximity of the World Cup to the Ashes brings additional risk•Getty Images

Australia and England players involved in the upcoming Women’s Ashes risk missing the ODI World Cup in New Zealand if they contract Covid-19 towards the backend of the multi-format series. The Ashes schedule was amended on Thursday to finish earlier and condense the matches to give teams more time to complete quarantine and preparation in New Zealand. However, the squads are due to depart across the Tasman almost straight after completing the Ashes in Melbourne on February 9, which means if a player (or support staff) was to contract Covid or have to isolate as a close contact in the days before that it would likely rule them out of the tournament.Under current guidelines squads will need to arrive in New Zealand as one group and there won’t be the capacity for any players to join later.”At the moment the information we are receiving is that it’s just the one squad,” Australia’s national selector Shawn Flegler said. “It’s going to be tough but things have changed so much over the last few weeks. If we can get players over later then we’ll look to do that.Related

Women's Ashes schedule adjusted to allow for World Cup quarantine

“That’s why we are trying to put protocols in place but as we’ve seen in the last few weeks it can be very difficult. We have to expect something may happen.”It means that the Ashes will be played under stricter protocols than have been seen in the men’s series over the last few weeks, which has had to contend with various Covid issues although CA wants to continue to try to strike a balance and allow some freedoms. However, restrictions could be tightened further as the departure to New Zealand gets closer.”We need to keep in mind England as well,” Flegler said. “Their focus is on the Ashes but also defending their World Cup title. They are very keen to make sure all their players are available so if we do have to tighten things towards the back end of the series we will do that.”Again we are trying to balance that with our players and staff can live with some sort of normality. It’s not normal, let’s be honest, but [we] want to make it as comfortable as possible. We’ll try and do the best we can.”Currently the interstate travel involved in the series is a mixture of charter and commercial flights but the risk level of the latter is currently being assessed.Australia are due to name their Ashes and World Cup squads next week (the latter expected to be 17 names) and will also announce an Australia A group that will face England A. There remains a plan for an intra-squad Australia warm-up on January 18 in Adelaide – part of just three days preparation for the home side – but while the original idea was for movement between the main squad and the A-team players, they will now be keep separate as much as possible.”Things have changed pretty rapidly over the last couple of weeks and we have to be really careful with our protocols that if someone does have Covid it doesn’t take down the whole touring squad,” Flegler said. “We’ll try and provide some opportunity between the squads where we can but we need to be careful that if some does get Covid it doesn’t take out the whole series.””The way we are looking at it is we have to be prepared that there will be players who will miss games. Hopefully it doesn’t happen but we are planning for it in case. We’ll just have to adjust pretty much every day.”Australia’s preparations have also been hit by the cancelling of a number of Women’s National Cricket League matches due to the impact of Covid, which means some players won’t have seen action since the WBBL finished in late November.”It’s been a big challenge,” Flegler said. “We had the WNCL games before the Ashes thinking we’d have selection opportunities. That’s been thrown out of the window to a degree. What we have learnt in the last 18 months to two years is to be adaptable and flexible. So still confident that we’ve seen enough of our players over the last couple of years so we can put a couple of squads together.”
