Stuart Broad conjures one last burst of magic as England win fifth Test by 49 runs

Series squared two-all at The Oval as retiring seamer claims last two Aussie wickets

Stuart Broad conjured one last burst of magic, signing off from his professional career with the last two Australian wickets to square the Ashes series two-all at The Oval. England’s all-time leading Ashes wicket-taker claimed his 603rd and 604th Test wickets, Todd Murphy and Alex Carey edging behind, to complete a comeback from two-nil down.Australia retained the urn when rain washed England’s victory hopes away in Manchester but they squandered another opportunity to win a first overseas Ashes series since 2001. They made significant inroads into a steep target of 384 to win, but collapsed dramatically after tea on the fifth day. When rain arrived just as the players returned after the lunch break, Australia needed 146 more runs to win with seven wickets remaining, with Steven Smith and Travis Head both set. They chipped a further 26 runs off the target after tea, before a dramatic collapse of 4 for 11 in 19 balls.Moeen Ali, bowling despite a groin strain in what was almost certain to be his final Test match, got one to turn sharply out of the rough as Head edged to slip, then Chris Woakes found Smith’s outside edge as the old ball nipped away just a fraction off the seam.Mitchell Marsh inside-edged onto his pad and Jonny Bairstow clung onto a sharp chance, sprawling low to his right, and when Mitchell Starc nicked his second ball to second slip, The Oval erupted in celebration. Pat Cummins fell shortly after, inside-edging Moeen to leg slip via his thigh pad. That brought Murphy to the crease with 90 runs still required, but he held firm alongside Carey to whittle away at the target. After beating Murphy on the outside edge with successive balls, Broad switched the bails at the non-striker’s end – as he had in the first innings – then wheeled away in trademark celebration as his next delivery was nicked behind.England declined to take the second new ball with a hint of movement still on offer, and Broad had Carey edging to second slip only for Zak Crawley to spill a tricky chance. But Bairstow clung on when Carey feathered behind once more, and Broad basked in the glow of one final flourish to sign off from his epic career.England’s seamers had struggled to create chances on the fourth day but a replacement ball – chosen 11 deliveries before Sunday’s early close – and helpful overhead conditions meant they were in the game from the start of the fifth morning, with Broad almost immediately beating the bat.Woakes struck in the fourth over of the day, angling one across Warner to have him caught behind. Even if Broad is reputed to be Warner’s tormentor-in-chief, Woakes has taken on that mantle in the last two weeks, dismissing him twice in the match in Manchester and twice more in South London.England burned a review when Broad’s nip-backer struck Marnus Labuschagne on the thigh, but outside the line of off stump, but the DRS could not save Usman Khawaja in Woakes’ next over. He went full and straight, trapped him on the front pad and brought Khawaja’s superb individual series to an end with a fourth-innings 72.Labuschange had been the only frontline Australian batter to cope with Mark Wood’s pace at both Headingley and Old Trafford, but was squared up to fall to him for the second time in the match for only 13. He was beaten by a length ball that moved away late, edging to second slip where Crawley held a good, low catch.Smith and Head counter-punched, bringing up a 50-run stand in 62 balls. Head was repeatedly beaten on the outside edge by Broad but thumped back-to-back boundaries off James Anderson, while Smith looked somewhere back to his best after two quiet Tests since his hundred at Lord’s.He was dramatically reprieved in the over before lunch, gloving Moeen’s offbreak to Stokes at leg slip only for Stokes to lose control of the ball, brushing it against his thigh as he went to throw it up in celebration. England challenged the on-field decision and were frustrated to lose a review, but Smith survived and reached the interval on 40.Rain wiped out the second session and delayed the third. Shortly after the resumption Smith brought up his second half-century of the match and his first in the fourth innings of a match in seven years – but Head fell to the very next ball, and England grasped their moment. For Australia, defeat means that a generation of modern greats will leave the game without winning a series in England outright, despite going two-nil up after two Tests. Murphy is their only player who featured at The Oval under the age of 29; many others will not be back in four years’ time. And for England, this was validation for an extraordinary transformation in their approach to Test cricket. They hardly landed a punch in a miserable Ashes tour 18 months ago but had Australia on the ropes for much of this series. For Broad – and Moeen – it was a fitting send-off.

Northern Superchargers progress to women's final after rain douses Welsh Fire hopes

Superchargers’ second-place finish proves the difference as bad weather curtails Eliminator after 75 balls

Northern Superchargers have progressed to the final of the women’s Hundred after their Eliminator with Welsh Fire was abandoned during a torrential downpour at the Kia Oval.Superchargers, who will play Southern Brave at Lord’s on Sunday, progressed by virtue of finishing second in the group stage. It was a position they sealed by beating Fire on Tuesday in both teams’ last match of the group stages, taking Superchargers to 12 points, one ahead of their opponents. The Eliminator had already been reduced to a 95-ball affair after rain pushed back the start by 45 minutes. And the agony for Fire, who finished bottom in the first two editions, is that the strong progress they made to reach 104 for 2 after 75 deliveries, having won the toss and opted to bat first, was ultimately for nothing. An engaging 38 from Sophia Dunkley set up a platform of 59 for the first wicket, before fellow opener and Fire skipper Tammy Beaumont – 37 not out off 30 – prepared for a late assault with Laura Harris, who had 14 from 5 balls. At that point, standing umpires Sue Redfern and Mark Newell opted to take the players off the field due to the threat of lightning in the area.In accordance with the playing conditions, the players were only permitted to return to the field once officials were confident the storm had passed. However heavy rain set in, bringing the Fire innings to a close, before the match was called off at 4.41pm local time, 30 minutes before the latest time Fire’s 25-ball second innings was permitted to start.”You never want the result to go into a final to be how it is today,” Hollie Armitage, Superchargers captain, said. “But I think that shows why finishing second is so important, just like finishing first and going straight to the final. Obviously, it is a little bit bittersweet, but we’re happy to be on the side that’s going to Lord’s tomorrow.”We’ve won six out of eight games in the group stage and that’s why the group stages are so important. You’ve got to treat every game as a final so you can try and finish at the top of the table, which was obviously our ambition. But luckily today, by finishing second, it’s going to take us to the final.”Having finished bottom in both of the first two editions, Fire’s about-turn, in tandem with their men’s team, has been one of the stories of 2023. To have their tournament ended in such fashion was a tough pill to swallow.”Devastated, absolutely devastated for the girls,” Beaumont said. “The game was going nicely towards what would have been a decent total and I would have backed the girls to defend anything. It would have been easier to take had we been absolutely thrashed or beaten in a close one and actually lost the game.”To go on previous results and table finishes is tough. Everyone is absolutely devastated. But that is cricket. You can’t book the weather. It’s been a pretty poor summer on the weather front, hasn’t it? Sport is cruel, isn’t it?”Rules are rules, aren’t they? At the end of the day, if we’d have won at Headingley on Tuesday and finished second we wouldn’t have been complaining.”Asked if, like the final, the Eliminator should have a reserve day, Beaumont was phlegmatic. Though Fire ended up on the wrong side of the calculations here, she appreciates the nature of the Hundred, and indeed a point of difference with other franchise competitions around the world, is its compact schedule.”They want The Hundred to be condensed and I think that is what sets it apart from any other competition. Just eight games and an Eliminator and final – that is what makes it good.”You hear people saying the Big Bash is too long, the IPL being far too long, the games and the format. In terms of the women’s team, they’ve had the same overseas players throughout and that is what makes it good. [With reserve days] it would have to be another four days. That is pretty good – it has just stitched us up this time.”

ECB unveils new measures to tackle discrimination in wake of ICEC report

Board on course to fulfil 94% of recommendations but concedes timescales for equal pay may not be met

Richard Gould, the ECB’s chief executive, believes English cricket is “on a journey to try and change history”, but conceded that funding will be an ongoing issue, following the publication of the governing body’s response to this summer’s damning report by the Independent Commission for Equity in Cricket (ICEC), which found the sport to be institutionally discriminatory on the grounds of race, class and gender. The ICEC report, “Holding Up A Mirror To Cricket”, was published on the eve of the Lord’s Test in June, having been commissioned in the midst of the racism crisis that engulfed English cricket following Azeem Rafiq’s revelations at Yorkshire. The report listed 44 recommendations in the course of its 317 pages, including a recommendation for equal pay across the men’s and women’s games, and an overhaul of school cricket and talent pathways to “make it more meritocratic, inclusive, accountable, transparent and consistent”.Monday’s 34-page response from the ECB, “Making Cricket A More Inclusive Sport”, comes in the wake of an initial three-month period of consideration, during which time a consultation process was instigated by Clare Connor, the ECB’s deputy chief executive, with the support of a sub-group of the ECB board including Baroness Zahida Manzoor, Pete Ackerley, Ebony Rainford-Brent, Sir Ron Kalifa, Richard Thompson and Gould. While the ECB believes it is on course to fulfil “94%” of the ICEC’s recommendations, it conceded that “further analysis” will be required for the remaining proposals, most specifically the recommendations surrounding the gender pay gap, in which the ICEC called for equal pay at domestic level by 2029 and international level (including ECB contracts) by 2030.Although the board announced earlier this month that men’s and women’s international players would be granted equal match fees, starting from England Women’s recently concluded series against Sri Lanka, Gould suggested that the ICEC’s recommended timeframe was unrealistic given the existing pressures on the board’s finances, particularly in light of the growing threat to the men’s game from the T20 franchise market.”We have two priorities at the moment in terms of finances for the game,” Gould said. “One is ICEC, to ensure we can deliver on those [recommendations] and the wider discussion on EDI [equality, diversity and inclusion]. The other is to make sure that we don’t lose all of our best players to a variety of different franchise tournaments around the world.”Despite a significant uptick in interest in women’s cricket this summer, with more than 110,000 ticket sales across a compelling drawn Ashes campaign, Gould said that the “definable income” into the women’s game, in the region of £11 million, still fell some £20 million short of expenditure.Though he pledged that the ECB would continue to “invest ahead of revenues”, with £25 million to be injected annually in a bid to drive up the commercial value of the women’s game, the board’s existing broadcast deal with Sky Sports and the BBC is locked in until 2028.Despite huge interest in the women’s Ashes, the gender pay gap could prove hard to close in the immediate future•Getty Images

As Gould put it, the ECB would “have a good go” at meeting the ICEC’s target for 2029, but he added that it was “something we cannot necessarily do within those timescales”, particularly if, as reported, the board is looking to address the threat of the T20 franchise circuit by offering multi-million pound three-year contracts for its elite male cricketers.”There is a pot of money that we need to find, but we have to find that, because there’s been underinvestment in women’s team sport for decades,” Gould added. “That’s one of the things that this report has highlighted, and we’re determined to act on it.”Similar pressures exist at age-group level, with the sheer cost of coaching and equipment leading to the sport being dominated by the private-school sector. Existing initiatives such as Chance To Shine, MCC Foundation and the African Caribbean Engagement (ACE) Programme have been granted £2 million in extra funding following their successes in increasing participation within state schools and Black and Asian communities, but the ECB confirmed that specific EDI training at county and age-group level would be required to ensure that those from lower socio-economic backgrounds are able to break into the professional game.Related

A new regulatory body will also come into being, following the ICEC’s criticisms of the ECB’s existing disciplinary processes. Although the chair of the new Cricket Discipline Panel will be appointed by the ECB, their roles will be “ring-fenced” to ensure a heightened degree of independence. Issues of misconduct and safeguarding will come under this body’s remit.Addressing the ECB’s response, Thompson, the chair, reiterated the unreserved apology he had offered on the day of the initial ICEC findings in June, and reaffirmed the board’s “absolute commitment” that cricket will “strive to become the most inclusive sport in England and Wales”.”There is no doubt that the ICEC highlighted to great effect the impact of discrimination on individuals and the extent of the systemic challenges to be addressed. Its in-depth analysis also presented an opportunity to put in place a comprehensive plan of action that will deliver meaningful change and rebuild trust among the communities we serve.”This response represents a set of actions that will accelerate and intensify our work to make cricket a game for everyone, actions that cricket can deliver and fund within an achievable timeframe. It builds on a huge amount of work which is already under way right across the network.”Cricket hasn’t got it right in the past, but this is an opportunity to move forwards together. I’d urge everyone to now come together, to put their energy and effort into delivering these actions, and to playing their part in ensuring cricket becomes England and Wales’s most inclusive team sport.”

David Willey considered missing World Cup

Being overlooked for central contract left retiring bowler feeling like “a third wheel” on tournament eve

Matt Roller11-Nov-20233:29

Harmison: England squad for WI will have fresh faces

David Willey signed off from his international career by taking his 100th ODI wicket in England’s win over Pakistan in Kolkata – then revealed he had considered pulling out of the World Cup as late as the day that the team flew to India at the end of September.Willey announced before England’s defeat to Australia in Ahmedabad last week that he would quit international cricket after this tournament at the age of 33. He was told in September that he had not been offered a central contract for 2023-24, then learned that he was the only member of the World Cup squad without an offer. He was incensed, and soon decided that he was no longer interested in feeling like “a third wheel” as a fringe player. He said that constant uncertainty over his schedule had taken its toll on him, his wife and their two children, and has therefore opted to “take control”.Related

Willey started the World Cup running the drinks for England but replaced Sam Curran for their fourth match, a 229-run loss to South Africa in Mumbai, and has played every game since. He finished the tournament with 11 wickets at 23.54, second only to Adil Rashid in England’s squad, and signed off with 3 for 56 in his 10 overs.”It was mixed emotions,” Willey said. “My time is done… but it’s with deep regret. Anybody looking in has probably looked at the way I’ve gone about my business and [seen that I am] probably playing the best cricket of my career. I’m 33, as fit as I’ve ever been.”One of the reasons that I wasn’t offered a contract was them going in a different direction after the World Cup – I don’t know why [they are]. It’s been a period for some time now… not knowing quite where I stand with England and it’s just taken its toll, and becomes very tiring.”David Willey was Player of the Match in his international swansong•AFP/Getty Images

Willey believes he would have been able to play a valuable role for England at the T20 World Cup next June, had he been offered a contract. “[If there is] an injury or two, they’re going to be calling on someone with very little to no experience in World Cups,” he said.”Never say never, but right now, I’m very confident [in] my decision that today was my last game of cricket for England. Do I want to go to the Caribbean and run drinks, and not know where I stand, and just feel like a third wheel again – which is very much what I felt like when I turned up at Lord’s, being the only one without a contract? Probably not, so I’m done.”Willey said he had doubts over whether he should travel to India after learning that he was the only squad member without a central contract: “I wasn’t sure whether I was going to come to the World Cup, even to the 11th hour. The morning that we were joining up at Lord’s, I still wasn’t sure whether I’d make the trip or not.”He added: “From then on, it [retirement] was something that was on my mind. It’s not just that I haven’t been offered a contract; it’s how I feel valued as an England player, when I look down that list of other guys that have got contracts… I came to the decision that the time was right for me to call it a day.”Willey removed both Pakistan openers – Abdullah Shafique and Fakhar Zaman – in his new-ball spell on Saturday, then returned to have Agha Salman caught at mid-on to become the 15th Englishman to reach 100 ODI wickets. He also became the second England men’s player after Alastair Cook to win the Player of the Match award in his final international appearance.”On the phone to my wife this morning, she said, ‘Go on – just get to 100 wickets. It’d be a nice way to finish,'” he said. “To do that was a nice way for me personally [to sign off].”He said he wanted to leave international cricket on his own terms, and hoped that he had proved Rob Key – who, as managing director, was ultimately responsible for central contract offers – wrong. “Keysy said to me, ‘I hope you can prove me wrong.’ Maybe I’ve done it over the last few games,” Willey said.”The timing [of his retirement announcement], people may have looked at it and frowned upon my timing there. But for me personally, there’s not many opportunities you get to walk away from [international] cricket on your terms, and I wanted to really enjoy my last three games of cricket [for England] and play without looking over my shoulder, thinking, ‘One bad performance and I’m out of the side.'”Willey will continue to play domestic and franchise cricket. He captains Northamptonshire in the T20 Blast and has a contract with Abu Dhabi Knight Riders for the ILT20 in January-February. He is also likely to be retained by Royal Challengers Bangalore in the IPL, and by Welsh Fire in the Hundred.
