Chris Jordan backs Surrey to switch mindsets for Somerset Blast challenge

T20 captain plays down absence of England star names for Finals Day

Less than 48 hours after the thrilling climax to their County Championship tussle down at Taunton, Surrey and Somerset are set to resume their rivalry up at Edgbaston on Saturday, with a rematch of their T20 Blast semi-final from 12 months ago.And despite his club’s disappointment on both occasions, Surrey’s T20 captain Chris Jordan insists there’ll be no hangovers from either, as they continue their quest towards what could yet be a glorious double-winning season.”Over the last few years especially, this fixture has produced some exciting, competitive results,” Jordan told ESPNcricinfo. “It’s ironic that in the week leading into Finals Day, we’ve been playing against the exact same team.”Any road to the final is never easy, and at some point you have to beat the best team. Obviously, they’re defending champions, and deservedly so, so we’ll need to be right on it. But it’s always hard-fought battles, and the team that plays best on the day normally wins this particular encounter, so we don’t see it being any different.”Related

Vaughan, Leach lead spin surge as Somerset ignite title hopes

Tom Banton the hero for Somerset but ruled out of T20 Finals Day

It will, however, require a very different tempo from Surrey, and a swift transfer of mindset, after their attempts to park the bus at Taunton and block their way to a potentially title-sealing draw backfired in spectacular fashion. Despite Dom Sibley’s doughty 56 from 183 balls, their resistance was swept aside in a stunning collapse of 7 for 14 in 18.1 overs, by Somerset’s latest spin pairing, Jack Leach and Archie Vaughan.”It can be tough, but the best players just make the switch,” Jordan said. “The main thing is it’s a mindset shift, your technique is not going to change too much between formats. You just have to assess the situation and the conditions and decide what approach to take. I don’t see it as being too different. With the type of multi-format cricketers we have, they can do it quite effortlessly.”Sibley is perhaps the case in point for Surrey. Only days prior to his Taunton rearguard, he had been the toast of the Kia Oval after his scintillating 67 from 48 balls provided the impetus that Surrey needed to hunt down Durham’s target of 163 in their Blast quarter-final. It was an innings that defied the reputation he made for himself during his stint as an England Test opener, not least with an eye-catching reverse-scoop for six over deep third, but Jordan said it hadn’t come as a surprise to his team-mates.”It was an unbelievable knock, but well deserved, because he’s been working so hard on his power game since he came back to Surrey,” Jordan said. “He’s a lot more expansive, but his batting in the powerplay has been key, because this year the brand-new white ball has been doing a bit more than normal. He’s just played some good cricketing shots, with a good technique, and that quarter-final was a great template for him. His tempo was really good, and it helped us to control that chase.”Sibley’s poise could be all the more important to Surrey given the personnel they will be missing on Saturday. Despite the expected return of three of the four players who featured in the Sri Lanka Test series – with Gus Atkinson missing out after suffering a niggle during that match – Surrey’s line-up will be shorn of some serious firepower, with Will Jacks, Sam Curran, Jamie Overton and Reece Topley all out of the picture due to their involvement in England’s T20I series against Australia. It’s a situation that Tymal Mills, Sussex’s captain, last week described as “stupid”, as he faced up to the prospect of losing Jofra Archer for his team’s Finals Day campaign, while Alec Stewart – Surrey’s ongoing director of cricket – last year decried the ECB’s so-called Super September as “anything but”. However, Jordan took a more phlegmatic approach to the sport’s ongoing fixture congestion.”Obviously, we’ll have a few changes to the line-up but that’s been the theme of the entire season,” he said. “We’re blessed with a squad where so many of our guys are good enough to get international accolades, so we’re trusting all the guys to go and get the job done.”There’s a lot to take in as captain, but I always knew what I was getting myself into. It can be challenging, but my mindset is just to find solutions. Obviously Covid has set back a lot of schedules, so everyone is playing catch-up, and for me, personally, I know from being involved in an England set-up that country comes first.”International games are very high intensity, so to release players right in the middle of a T20 series, for a game the next day, would be quite tough, both mentality and on the body. It’s about that balance between giving the guys their best opportunity to perform in a England shirt, and having them available for one of the big days in our English calendar. It’s unfortunate, but we just leave it to the powers-that-be.”Surrey and Somerset met on Finals Day last year – but Sam Curran won’t be involved this time round•Surrey CCC/Getty Images

It’s not just the international game that is encroaching on the county season, however. One particularly notable absentee will be Jason Roy, who has committed himself to playing for Trinbago Knight Riders in the CPL, having already missed much of the Blast group stage to play for Trinbago’s sister team, LA Knight Riders, in Major League Cricket. It continues Roy’s steady drift away from the English game, following his decision in May 2023 to negotiate an early release from his ECB contract in order to be a free agent, but Jordan had sympathy for his former England team-mate, whom he recognises as a first-mover in the shifting world of T20 cricket.”Obviously, it’s a little bit of an unusual scenario, but we’re in unusual territory as well, with so much franchise cricket and different opportunities popping up over the world.”The cricket community as a whole hasn’t fully come to grips with the moving times,” Jordan added. “[Roy’s] taken his own decision in terms of his own career. He’s been a great performer for us, we would have loved to have him, but we also wish him all the best in everything he does, because it’s such a big part of the dressing room.”On his own England ambitions, Jordan is realistic about the status quo. Despite a strong showing at the recent T20 World Cup – including a memorable hat-trick in front of his friends and family in Barbados – he recognises that, with his 36th birthday approaching next month, he is unlikely to be a part of the white-ball reboot under Brendon McCullum’s expanded remit as head coach.”I’m the kind of person that likes to take a day at a time and control what I can control,” he said. “The England team is in a bit of a transition period, and at some point, I knew that stage would come. It doesn’t necessarily mean that the door is shut, but all I can do is play the cricket that’s presented in front of me, and try to do as best as possible.”Coming off the World Cup, I was a little bit in and out of the team, so it was nice to come back and put in a few performances for Surrey and Southern Brave as well. But I’ll just try to do my job on Finals Day, which will be leading the team as best as possible, but also performing my role.”

He's a dream for Barry: Everton open talks to sign £50m "superstar"

Everton’s summer rebuild is gathering pace. The £27.6m signing of Thierno Barry from Villarreal has handed David Moyes a towering centre-forward to lead the line, one capable of dominating defences with his aerial prowess, strength, and movement.

But with both Jack Harrison and Jesper Lindstrom returning to their parent clubs, Everton’s attack is short of width and creativity.

Moyes now needs a player who can stretch defences, beat his man, and crucially, supply the service Barry will thrive on.

Everton open talks to sign Harrison and Lindstrom replacement

That search has led them to one of La Liga’s standout performers, whose skillset may be the perfect match for their new No. 9.

According to reports, Everton have already made first contact.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

Via TEAMtalk, Everton have started talks with Real Sociedad over a potential deal for 24-year-old Japanese international Takefusa Kubo.

The former Real Madrid prospect is open to a new challenge, and the Premier League is believed to be a major draw.

Kubo is currently under contract at Sociedad until June 2029, with a release clause reportedly around £50m.

Takefusa Kubo for Real Sociedad.

Everton are not the only side interested. Clubs from the Bundesliga and La Liga are also monitoring the situation, but the Toffees are hopeful that the promise of regular minutes and a key role under Moyes could help sway the player.

Kubo joined Sociedad permanently in 2022 and wasted no time making an impression. In his first full season, he was named the club’s Player of the Season, showcasing his ability to both score and create from wide areas.

Zinedine Zidane, who played a role in his development at Real Madrid, once called him “a very interesting player for the present and the future.”

zinedine-zidane-manager-tottenham-hotspur

Meanwhile, former Mallorca CEO Maheta Molango, reflecting on Kubo’s two loan spells at the club, praised his character and focus:

“I was very impressed by Kubo when I met him. He’s super humble, super down to earth. His talent is obvious, but the reason why he will one day be a football superstar is his head. He sees things that other people don’t see, the ability to see a pass and pick a long ball. His intelligence is outstanding.”

Why Kubo could be Barry’s perfect supply line

Kubo’s profile fits exactly what Everton lack. A right-footed winger who prefers starting from the right, he thrives in one-on-one situations, cutting inside to create chances or drive at goal.

He combines dribbling flair with precision delivery, making him a natural partner for a striker like Barry.

In 2024/25, Kubo played 36 games, scoring five goals and assisting several more.

According to FBref, he completed 75 take-ons, created 45 chances, produced 14 shots on target, and made 129 touches in the opposition box.

His crossing numbers are particularly impressive, averaging 3.32 per 90, ranking him in the 86th percentile among wingers in Europe’s top leagues.

For Barry, who stands at 6 foot 5 and thrives on service, those numbers are gold.

Last season, the French forward scored 11 goals from an expected goals (xG) tally of 11.7 and added four assists.

The same data reveals that he ranks among the top percentiles for runs in behind and crosses received and won nearly two-thirds of his aerial duels in the penalty area.

everton-james-tarkowski-premier-league

Barry’s combination of size, mobility, and sharp movement inside the box is exactly the kind of profile that can elevate a creator like Kubo. And in turn, Kubo’s ability to beat his marker and pick a final ball could help Barry explode in the Premier League.

Moyes’ system traditionally relies on wide players who work hard defensively but also deliver early, accurate service. Kubo ticks those boxes but adds a level of technical quality that Everton have lacked on the flanks.

With Calvert-Lewin gone, Barry now leads the line. And if Everton can land Kubo, they may have finally found the perfect partner to supply him, creating a dangerous duo built on power, and cutting edge in the final third.

Ruturaj Gaikwad, Sai Sudharsan, Rajat Patidar and Ishan Kishan all missed out on an opportunity to play substantial knocks as India C found themselves in a dogfight for the first-innings honours against India A in Anantapur. At stumps on day two, India C were 216 for 7, seemingly in a better position courtesy of an unbroken 49-run stand between Pulkit Narang and Vijaykumar Vyshak. The bulk of the damage was done by 20-year-old Uttar Pradesh seamer Aaqib Khan, who dismissed Gaikwad (17), Sudharsan (17) and Patidar (first-ball duck) after coming on first change. The innings was then revived by Abishek Porel, who continues to enjoy a breakout year.Porel, one of the bright performers for Delhi Capitals at IPL 2024, struck 82 off 113 balls to build on a clutch unbeaten 35 in the previous game that helped his side clinch a low-scoring thriller.Narang, who at the age of 30 is looking to make up for lost time as a first-class cricketer, will hope to score his third first-class half-century on Saturday and get his side into the lead. Narang, who bowls offspin, is currently on 99 first-class wickets.Earlier, India A managed to stretch their first-innings score from the overnight 224 for 7 to 297 courtesy of lower-order fireworks from Avesh Khan, who struck an unbeaten 51, his second first-class fifty. He was well supported by Prasidh Krishna, who made 34. A bulk of the contribution had come on the opening day courtesy of Shashwat Rawat’s 124.Vyshak, who is on the selectors’ radar after being awarded a fast-bowling contract, picked up two of the three remaining wickets; he finished with figures of 4 for 51. Anshul Kamboj, the Haryana quick fresh off an eight-for in the previous game, ended with 3 for 49.

James Anderson buoyed by breadth and depth of evolving fast bowling stocks

Fast bowling consultant believes England’s options are expanding ahead of next winter’s Ashes

England want to arrive in Australia next winter with a “battery” of fast bowlers and James Anderson believes the list of candidates for that tour is “growing and growing”. Anderson has worked as their fast-bowling coach since he was ushered into retirement in July and said on Sunday that he is excited by the emergence of a new generation of seam bowlers.Rob Key, England’s managing director, has been vocal in his ambition to bring through a stock of quicks who bowl “85mph-plus with high skill” as they look to replace Anderson and Stuart Broad. Last year, he offered two-year contracts to four seamers – Gus Atkinson, Brydon Carse, Matt Potts and Josh Tongue – whom he believes have the attributes to succeed at Test level.Tongue has spent the last 14 months sidelined with a pectoral injury, while Potts has only played two Tests since June 2023. But Atkinson has thrived, taking 38 wickets at 21.86 in his first seven Tests and scoring a century against Sri Lanka, while Carse impressed on debut in Multan last week with his speed, skill and stamina.Related

Pakistan, a graveyard for Test bowlers – in numbers

Switch Hit: Multan Magic or Meltdown?

“[Atkinson] seems to rise to every challenge that’s put in front of him,” Anderson said. “Brydon was outstanding… To bowl 90mph in that heat, pretty consistently, was an amazing effort. He was accurate, he bowled good short stuff when we needed him to do that, and he bowls wicket-taking balls – and that’s what we’re after, as a bowling group.”He has always been on the radar of the selectors for the away Ashes… It looks like he has all the attributes to do well there. He has got pace, bounce and he is accurate, and he has skills and he can bat. He is ticking a lot of boxes. Hopefully, he can stay fit and get a lot of confidence from how he bowled the other day.”England are missing Mark Wood in Pakistan due to his elbow injury, while they still hope that Jofra Archer might return to Test cricket next year after a three-year absence. Archer has spent most of that time sidelined with back and elbow issues but has gradually stepped up his workload over the past six months and still has ambitions to play all formats.”The list is not endless, but it feels like it is growing and growing,” Anderson said. “We’ve got the likes of Woody and Jofra [to come back in] but also Olly Stone and Josh Tongue. It feels like there’s loads of guys coming through – Josh Hull as well, who we think has got a good future.”It does feel like there are options there. It is really exciting for an England group at the minute, thinking of what we have ahead with India next summer, then Australia, and then going forward over the next three years.”Anderson’s involvement with England’s fast bowlers is officially as a consultant coach for their winter Test tours to Pakistan and New Zealand, with his longer-term future with the team unclear. He left open the possibility of extending his role further down the line, potentially including next winter’s Ashes tour.”I’m really enjoying it,” Anderson said. “We have an amazing coaching group who have been really helpful. I’ve not officially done this job before, but I feel like it’s not far off where I was for the last few years of my career: trying to be there for bowlers, help them as much as possible, come up with ideas when we’re in the field. It’s been great… so far, so good.”He also played down the significance of his late arrival for the tour, having missed England’s three training days and the first day of the first Test. Anderson was instead playing in a pro-am golf tournament at St Andrews, but said that he had only agreed to participate after running the idea past England coach Brendon McCullum.”I’m not full-time with England, I’m a consultant,” Anderson said. “I was still in contact with the bowlers and in the end, it didn’t really matter that I wasn’t here. I thought we bowled really well… The last few tours I went on, we didn’t have a bowling coach and it is good for the lads to take some responsibility.”

He’d be Gueye 2.0: Everton closing in on move for "exciting" £22m star

After a tough preseason campaign, Everton are continuing to strengthen their squad in a bid to make the first campaign at the Hill Dickinson Stadium a memorable one. The Toffees have already brought in several new faces, including a new striker to replace Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Thierno Barry from Villarreal.

More recently, David Moyes has added Chelsea midfielder Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall to his squad. The Toffees have snapped up the Englishman on a £29m deal, albeit with that including £4m in add-ons.

Moyes’ side will seemingly add another midfielder, with the club working behind the scenes to add depth in the middle of the park.

Everton’s next midfield target

Dewsbury-Hall is not the only Premier League star that the Toffees are targeting. David Ornstein recently reported that they have opened discussions with Manchester City over a season-long loan move for Jack Grealish, with the Englishman looking set for an exit from the Etihad this summer after missing out on their recent Club World Cup exploits.

Transfer Focus

Mega money deals, controversial moves and big-name flops. This is the home of transfer news and opinion across Football FanCast.

Elsewhere, meanwhile, the Merseysiders are still focusing on other targets at the Hill Dickinson Stadium.

According to a recent report from Spanish newspaper El Mira, Everton are close to signing UD Almeria midfielder Dion Lopy. The Premier League side have readied a bid for the player and are willing to fork out around €25m (£22m).

UD Almeria's Dion Lopy in action against Jude Bellingham.

That figure is said to be an ‘irresistible amount’ for the Spanish side, with the report outlining ‘barring a drastic turn of events’, Lopy will ‘soon pack his bags’ in order to seal a move to Merseyside.

Why Lopy would be a good signing

At just 23 years of age, Lopy is already a full senior international, which is a testament to the quality he possesses. Described as one of many “exciting” Senegalese talents by analyst Ben Mattinson, Lopy has already garnered a strong reputation.

After breaking through the academy at French side Stades Reims, Lopy made 62 appearances for the club, grabbing two assists from midfield. From there, he made the move to Spain, joining Almeria, where he has become a key player.

Last term for the club in La Liga 2, the 23-year-old played 36 times, chipping in with one goal and three assists. He tended to operate from the base of midfield, although did push further forward at times, too.

Moyes would surely love for the potential new Everton midfield to become the second coming of Idrissa Gueye. The Toffees star, who is an international teammate of Lopy’s, was a key player last term in the final season at Goodison Park.

He helped keep his side in the Premier League and achieve a comfortable mid-table finish.

He played 37 times in the top flight last season, missing just one game against Leicester City at the start of the campaign.

Like Lopy did for Almeria, Gueye sat at the base of the midfield and showed just how good a ball-winner he is. His 133 tackles were the most in the top flight.

If Lopy can replicate what Gueye has done for the Merseysiders in midfield, then he would surely be a successful signing. When looking at the numbers via Sofascore, there is certainly reason to believe he can become as good of a ball winner in the Premier League as his Senegal teammate.

Last season, the 23-year-old made 78 tackles and 46 interceptions for Almeria in the league, averaging a combined 3.6 per 90 minutes. Compare that to Gueye’s stats, courtesy of Sofascore, and they stack up well, with the Everton number 27 making 133 tackles and 48 interceptions, a combined average of 5.3 each game.

Of course, Lopy still has some way to go before he matches, or nears, Gueye’s numbers from last season. However, he has all the tools to suggest he can replicate his impact in midfield and be the second coming of his compatriot.

Stade De Reims midfielder Dion Lopy.

After the deals for Dewsbury-Hall and Grealish are completed, signing Lopy could be Moyes’ next big focus to strengthen in the middle of the park, and buy a long-term replacement for Gueye.

Pace riches give Sri Lanka hope on Gqeberha greentop

Despite the shellacking in Durban, Sri Lanka believe they can compete in the second Test thanks to their depth of seam resources

Andrew Fidel Fernando04-Dec-20244:28

Will Sri Lanka go in without a spinner in Gqeberha?

A fast bowler who has 25 Test wickets at 22.68 for the year (Lahiru Kumara), a left-arm swing bowler who averages 24.12 in South Africa (Vishwa Fernando), a skiddy right-arm quick with 68 career wickets at 25.97 (Asitha Fernando), and more good options on the bench.Sri Lanka have likely had better quicks than they have now – Chaminda Vaas took 355 Test wickets, and Lasith Malinga burned hot until the injuries overtook him. But Sri Lanka have probably never had the fast-bowling depth they currently command. In Durban, for example, they left out Kasun Rajitha, who himself averages 25.00 in South Africa and is probably their tallest bowler. They also omitted Milan Rathnayake, who made impressive strides – with bat and ball – in England earlier this year.Dhananjaya de Silva knows few other Sri Lanka captains have commanded these kinds of seam-bowling resources.”I’m very happy, because they know their games now, and what they need to do for the team,” de Silva said of his fast-bowling battery. “I think I need to give a lot of credit to Dimuth Karunaratne, because he was the previous captain, and it’s under his leadership that a lot of these bowlers started and developed. As captain I’m able to reap those rewards, so I’d like to give Dimuth aiya the credit for that.”Sri Lanka are about to begin a Test on a green-tinged South African surface, in Gqeberha, and although they may still choose to pick an XI that features their specialist spinner – Prabath Jayasuriya – they have the option of picking four seamers, as they had done at The Oval earlier this year, to excellent effect.Lahiru Kumara has taken 25 wickets in six Tests this year, at an average of 22.68•AFP/Getty Images

“So far we’re still talking about how many fast bowlers we will play and will only make a decision on that later,” de Silva said. “The track here is quite green.”I think in that England series we learned that we can win matches overseas with our pace attack. They’ve been improving day by day, and we saw the results of that at The Oval. We can’t blame our fast bowlers for the loss in Durban – that’s all on the batsmen, who got out for 40-odd. You can’t win a Test like that.”It was in fact in Karunaratne’s first series as captain that Vishwa took four wickets in a match that Sri Lanka won, in Gqeberha, in 2019. Vishwa isn’t the only Sri Lanka fast bowler in the likely XI for Thursday that has tasted success in South Africa, however. Kumara first burst into the international consciousness with a spectacular nip-backer at Newlands, which crashed into the stumps of no less a batter than Hashim Amla.Kumara has had more modest showings in South Africa since then, and has also been plagued by injuries, particularly with hamstring strains and tears. If he plays on Thursday, which seems exceedingly likely, he will have played seven Tests in 2024, which is his highest tally for a calendar year.”From what I see, Lahiru has been consistent in the last two years, and he’s played a lot of matches,” de Silva said. ” He’d been in and out of the team because of injuries, but now he’s been able to play consistently and learn what his strengths and weaknesses are. He’s able to back those strengths now because he’s played matches at a stretch. I think that’s the main thing that has contributed to his success.”The huge loss in Durban, de Silva said, was almost totally down to the failure of the batting group. Though he himself is a spinner, he’s been a fast-bowling captain, insisting that Sri Lanka play at least two quicks even at home, so they can be more competitive in SENA nations. He’s hoping to reap the rewards of that in Gqeberha.

O Palmeiras começou tendo total controle do jogo.

VOLTOU BEM, HEIN VEIGA!

SEGUNDO TEMPO SEGUE O RITMO DO PALMEIRAS
