Lost the ball 15x: Man Utd's 8/10 ace is already looking like another Bruno

The rot has stopped. Yes, Manchester United are finally up and running in the new Premier League season – but boy did they make hard work of it.

With the horror of the midweek trip to face Grimsby still very much fresh in the mind, the Red Devils were lively from the outset this time around for the visit of Burnley, having notably seen an early penalty decision chalked off following a coming together involving Mason Mount and Kyle Walker.

Former United loanee Martin Dubravka was in inspired form in the sticks, although not even he could keep out Casemiro’s deflected effort as the hosts eventually made their dominance pay just before the hour mark, with Clarets skipper Josh Cullen ultimately credited with the goal.

A second should well have been added before the break, although Amad could only fire wide with the goal gaping, with that profligacy unsurprisingly punished by Lyle Foster just after the restart.

That effort sparked a relentless period in which Bryan Mbeumo swiftly hit back for his first Old Trafford goal, although after seeing an equaliser ruled out for a marginal offside, the visitors – with the aid of the hapless Altay Bayindir – eventually did draw level through ex-Leeds United loanee, Jaidon Anthony.

Staring down the barrel of yet another disappointing result, Anthony then turned from hero to villain after pulling back Amad inside the area, allowing a certain Bruno Fernandes to right the wrongs of last week. And didn’t he deliver…

Bruno Fernandes' performance in numbers vs Burnley

There was certainly a familiar feeling creeping in as the game reached its dying embers, with United looking set to rue their wastefulness in front of goal, while having also been the victim of misfortune.

Indeed, Ruben Amorim could hardly contain his frustration at the sight of summer signing Matheus Cunha pulling up with injury in the first half, with the lively Mason Mount also withdrawn at half-time – presumably due to his own injury woes.

The ensuing second half was one of calamity and chaos, but it is in that backdrop that United’s main man thrives, with Fernandes stepping up when needed to secure a vital three points for his manager.

Also involved in the game’s opener following a wicked delivery into the area, the Portuguese playmaker nervelessly dispatched his penalty in added time to clinch the 3-2 victory. There was to be no Craven Cottage repeat on this occasion.

Not only then the headline-maker, Fernandes was also instrumental throughout in what was a largely positive performance in attack, having notably registered six key passes – the most of any player on the pitch.

For a man who was yet again the division’s chief creator last term, such a display has simply become the norm, with the 30-year-old again showcasing his importance to this turbulent outfit.

While he certainly relishes his talismanic status, the former Sporting CP star can’t do it on his own. Thankfully, it doesn’t look like he’ll have to…

Bryan Mbeumo steals the show vs Burnley

With Cunha crashing out and Mount also heading for an early bath, the constant presence in Amorim’s attacking unit was that man Mbeumo, with the Cameroonian speedster marking a fine performance by netting his first league goal of the campaign.

While makeshift left wing-back Diogo Dalot deserves much of the credit for his fine work in the build-up, Mbeumo is also worthy of praise for making space for himself inside the area with a clever piece of movement, before finishing with aplomb.

The ex-Brentford man calmly slotted home with the mark of a man who ended last term with 20 top-flight goals to his name, having swiftly shaken off his fatal missed spot-kick during Wednesday’s shootout defeat.

Right from the off this time around, the £65m man – who had sparked United’s comeback in midweek with his first goal for the club – looked like a real threat in behind, having notably been denied early on by the impressive Dubravka.

It was also his prodded pass which found Amad at the back post on the stroke of half-time, marking one of five key passes that the left-footer laid on during the match. Only Fernandes provided more.

That ability to operate as a clinical, yet creative force, like Fernandes, will be invaluable for Amorim, with Mbeumo repeatedly looking like making things happen for his side in the final third, even if that resulted in him losing the ball on 15 occasions.

As The Athletic’s Laurie Whitwell noted, he was simply “quality in everything he did”, having also been handed an 8/10 match rating by the MEN’s Samuel Luckhurst amid his starring role.

Having been a real outlet on the opening day against Arsenal, as well as a scorer at Grimsby, Mbeumo has settled in rather comfortably into his new surroundings – much in a similar manner to how Fernandes did all those years ago.

Still only 26 – just slightly older than Fernandes was at the time of his switch from Lisbon – the one-time Troyes winger is displaying all the signs of being the club’s next creative, attacking figurehead, with Saturday’s outing hopefully a show of things to come.

Of course, Amorim and his charges will be aware that there are bigger fish to fry ahead, yet after all the noise of the last week, the Red Devils can head into the international break on a much-needed brighter note.

Injury-hit Australia meet out-of-touch England in batting-friendly Lahore

Focus on Australia’s pace-bowling stocks, while England push Joe Root down to accommodate Jamie Smith at No. 3

Vithushan Ehantharajah21-Feb-20255:01

Agar: Aussie youngsters will have ‘hunger to make a difference’

Big picture: Both teams coming off series defeatsWould you believe it, not only have Australia and England been drawn in the same group at a global tournament, but their Champions Trophy returns also start against one another. Universe (ICC), you’ve done it again! And yet, amid such predictable money-grabbing comes a bit of shameful excitement. Even without mentioning the “A” word, these are two bitter rivals in unique states. A champion Australia side shorn of some of those champions, and an England side increasingly desperate to rediscover former glory. The lack of Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood gives the ODI World Cup holders a less intimidating feel, and subsequently shifts the onus on a batting line-up led by Travis Head’s brand of “Ah, we’ll have a go”. Quite how that responsibility will manifest itself to what is more or less an established group of batters remains to be seen particularly as captain Steven Smith, standing in for Cummins and the injured Mitchell Marsh, who would have likely deputised, weighs up the right combinations for his top seven. That Australia can call upon Nathan Ellis, Sean Abbott, Spencer Johnson and Ben Dwarshius to fill big bowling boots reflects the enviable depth of Australian cricket, even if those bowlers’ most notable successes – Abbott aside – have come exclusively in T20s. Extrapolating that to 50-over cricket will be its own challenge. Australia are not putting much stock in the fact they arrive off the back of a 2-0 ODI series loss against Sri Lanka. The same could be said of England, even if their 3-0 defeat to India elicited far more anger and ridicule.Related

Smith, Australia hope champion DNA outweighs big-name absences

Buttler: Smith has 'free hit' at No. 3 in reshuffled England batting order

Not training enough and golfing too much were the main takeaways outside a group that actually seems in good spirits considering they have now lost all four ODI series since the 2023 World Cup. To be expected, of course, as negative vibes have no place in Brendon McCullum’s house. In keeping, England’s break to the UAE came with a view of shedding the baggage from a travel-and defeat-heavy month in India, with added benefit of escaping the press hysteria around focusing on the wrong kind of white ball. But McCullum’s task requires a more hands-on and technically focused approach with a group which continues to look uneasy with bat and ball in this format. How much of that McCullum can change in such a short space of time – he has only been in charge of the limited-overs set-up for a month – will be determined over the coming weeks. Right now, it probably helps to have a familiar foe on the horizon to drum up a little extra heart and vigour. As for Jos Buttler, the next fortnight will go some way to determining whether he sticks with the captaincy. A promise to smile more at the start of the year felt optimistic at the time, and has proved as much. But after missing all of England’s ODIs in 2024, he will be better for the three ticked off earlier at the start of February.Of those Buttler missed last year due to a calf injury was the five-match series against Australia at the end of the home summer, which ensures greater familiarity at international level between the players, even if many of them have rubbed shoulders as team-mates or opponents at domestic level.Australia, made up of a few of the alternates substituted into their Champions Trophy squad, triumphed 3-2 on that occasion, having been 2-0 up before taking their foot off the gas. All five results were blowouts of one kind or another. And just as it was for India, Australia’s spinners made hay against England’s batters, with Adam Zampa doing the brunt of the damage, supplemented by handy contributions from Glenn Maxwell, Marnus Labuschagne and Head.Spencer Johnson replaces Mitchell Starc as the left-arm quick in Australia’s squad•Associated Press

Form guide (last five completed matches, most recent first)Australia: LLLLW
England: LLLLWIn the spotlight: Spencer Johnson and Harry BrookStarc is as close to irreplaceable a bowler as you can get in white-ball cricket. But if you’re going to try, a bloke who is six-feet-four and also bowls left-arm rockets is a great place to start. The best of Spencer Johnson has come in the shortest format, and with only three ODI caps spaced out over more than a year, the burden of replacing Starc at the front and back of an innings will weigh heavy on his broad shoulders. After taking his maiden wickets in Sri Lanka earlier this month, much more will be required of Johnson in Pakistan.Speaking of Pakistan, is there a better place for Harry Brook to rediscover his groove? This country’s pitches have been kind to him, albeit in the Test format, where he averages 84.10 courtesy of four hundreds – the most recent being a triple. England’s newly-appointed vice-captain left the India tour in a funk, with a lowly average of 16.66 in the ODIs brought about by an inability to attack spin effectively. But he will take heart from flatter decks and skippering with distinction against Australia last year, which included registering his maiden ODI century in the 3rd ODI at Chester-le-Street.Team newsGiven the absences, Australia’s pace attack pretty much picks itself. Allrounder Aaron Hardie, the immediate beneficiary of Marcus Stoinis’ retirement from the 50-over format on the eve of the tournament, could sit out for Labuschagne to play as an extra batter. Dwarshius’ left-arm/left-hand option may see him pip Abbott to the bowling allrounder slot.Australia (probable): 1 Travis Head, 2 Matthew Short, 3 Steven Smith (capt), 4 Josh Inglis (wk), 5 Marnus Labuschagne, 6 Alex Carey, 7 Glenn Maxwell, 8 Sean Abbott/Ben Dwarshius, 9 Nathan Ellis, 10 Adam Zampa, 11 Spencer JohnsonEngland’s batting reshuffle will see Jamie Smith at No. 3 and Joe Root at No. 4•Matthew Lewis-ICC/ICC via Getty Images

England announced their XI two days out from the match – early by their unusually prompt standards – with Jamie Smith not just back fit from a calf injury, but also batting at No. 3 while also playing as wicketkeeper. It is not quite a nuclear option, but it does involve pushing Joe Root to No. 4 and taking the gloves from Phil Salt, who kept throughout the ODIs in India. With just four frontline bowling options, Root and Liam Livingstone must join forces effectively to provide a serviceable fifth. The pace of Mark Wood and Jofra Archer, playing his first 50-over tournament since his Super Over heroics in 2019’s World Cup final, will present Australia’s starkest challenge.England: 1 Phil Salt, 2 Ben Duckett, 3 Jamie Smith (wk), 4 Joe Root, 5 Harry Brook, 6 Jos Buttler, 7 Liam Livingstone, 8 Brydon Carse, 9 Jofra Archer, 10 Adil Rashid, 11 Mark WoodPitch and conditionsODI pitches at the Gaddafi Stadium are almost always flat belters. The venue hosted two matches in the recent tri-series, with New Zealand posting 330 for 6 to beat Pakistan, and then chasing down 305 with six wickets and eight balls to spare. Lahore is expected to be slightly cooler than it was for the tri-series, partly because of rain this week, which ended up hampering England’s preparations on Thursday. Dew is very rarely a factor at this time of year.5:44

Knight questions idea of Root, Buttler coming down the order

Stats and trivia Australia and England have a tight head-to-head record in the Champions Trophy, with England ahead just by a 3-2 margin. Maxwell and Buttler are the only members available from the two teams’ squads from the 2013 edition of the tournament. Archer is two wickets away from 50 in the ODIs. Jamie Smith has only previously batted at No. 3 once in 18 List A innings – for Surrey against Kent in 2019.Quotes”I’m going to have my work cut out for me with some of that fast bowling England have got. They’re high quality, highly skilled and high pace. I’ve got to make sure I start well, earn the right, and see where the game takes us. I’m just worried about making sure I start well for the team.”
“He’s been fit and firing now for 18 months or so since being out of the game for a while. He’s really excited to put together that kind of length of time back on the field, and he’s obviously a superstar of the game for us. He is someone, as a captain, you always know you can turn to and throw the ball. He’s obviously going to be really looking forward to the game tomorrow.”

Celtic star delayed in joining national team due to shock transfer talks

With the summer transfer window now closed, one Celtic star has revealed how transfer talks over a shock late departure delayed his international duty.

Celtic's transfer window frustrates fans

The fact that it was free agent Kelechi Iheanacho that arrived on deadline day should just about sum it up for Celtic. Whilst the Bhoys did well to welcome the likes of Benjamin Nygren and, at long last, Michel Ange-Balikwisha, there remain question marks about whether they’ve improved their title-winning side from last season.

Nonetheless, Brendan Rodgers welcomed Iheanacho’s arrival with open arms, telling the club’s official website: “He is such a talented player, with great ability, athleticism and work-rate.

“He has great experience and he is right in his peak years, so he can be a great signing for us. I am sure he will make a big contribution to the team.”

Nygren’s impressive start to life in Scotland should also be noted. The winger has scored three goals and assisted one more in just four Scottish Premiership games.

The likes of Shin Yamada and Sebastian Tounekti also arrived in moves that should help replace the goals of Nicolas Kuhn, who left for Serie A side Como 1907 at the start of the summer.

Celtic have struck gold on "machine" who's worth more than Idah & Chermiti

Question marks linger over Celtic’s summer business, in the wake of Adam Idah’s exit, although there is still one man left to rely on at least.

ByRobbie Walls Sep 4, 2025

The Bhoys have already felt the full extent of his departure, crashing out of the Champions League against Karat Almatay and failing to score once across both legs.

As much as his exit was an undeniable blow at the start of the summer, however, things very nearly became far worse for Celtic as one player recently revealed.

Maeda reveals exit talks

As the forward revealed, Daizen Maeda held shock talks to leave Celtic and was delayed joining up with Japan for the international break as a result. The forward revealed that he wanted to leave the Scottish champions, but they blocked a move amid their own struggle to find a good enough replacement.

It’s a major concern for Rodgers, who lost Kyogo Furuhashi in January and Kuhn during the summer transfer window. To now have a player who scored 33 goals in all competitions eyeing the exit door is far from ideal, to say the least.

Daizen Maeda

When January arrives, the Celtic stance must not change. Having already lost two attacking stars this year, keeping hold of Maeda should be seen as a priority.

South Australian batter Emma de Broughe made 84 in Gold’s first innings to ensure the lead was only 34.But Mack and Faltum feasted in the third innings before Faltum declared to set Gold a chase of 249 on the final day. Chelsea chiefs now convinced 17-year-old could be their next Estevao

Estevao Willian arrived at Stamford Bridge this summer amid plenty of excitement, but Chelsea now believe another teenager could follow in his footsteps.

The Brazilian, who scored against Enzo Maresca’s side for ex-club Palmeiras at the Club World Cup, is being tipped for an incredibly bright future.

Despite being just 18, Estevao already boasts seven senior caps for the Brazil national side, and bagged his first goal for the five-time World Cup winners in a 3-0 victory over Chile in their last round of qualifiers.

By doing this, Estevao became the youngest Brazil goalscorer in a competitive match since footballing icon Pele.

For Chelsea, the bright young forward has already made three Premier League appearances and notched his first assist for the west Londoners in a 5-1 demolition of West Ham at the London Stadium.

He’s also poised to appear in the Champions League after being named in their official squad for the league phase — travelling with Maresca’s men to face Bayern Munich at the Allianz Arena this week.

All eyes are now on the dazzling teenager, who has been called the best talent to come out of Brazil since Neymar.

However, as Estevao continues to grab headlines with his potential, Stamford Bridge chiefs are convinced they’ll soon have the next “biggest thing” as well.

Chelsea convinced Dastan Satpaev could be their next Estevao

That is according to journalist Simon Phillips, who told his Substack that Chelsea expect big things from Dastan Satpaev — who’ll join Maresca’s side next summer once he turns 18.

Back in February, Chelsea agreed a £4 million deal to sign Satpaev from Kairat Almaty, which is a record transfer fee for the Kazakhstani first division.

Now, those within the club believe he actually could be the next Estevao.

Interestingly, Chelsea’s faith in Satpaev is backed up by Fabrizio Romano.

Fabrizio Romano says Chelsea really rate Satpaev

The reliable transfer journalist, speaking after Chelsea put pen to paper, revealed that BlueCo actually beat a German club to the youngster’s signature and are convinced he’s got “special” skills.

Klaasen helps SRH muster 143 after another collapse

Trent Boult was the wrecker-in-chief early on, taking the wickets of Abhishek and Head

ESPNcricinfo staff23-Apr-202514:39

What explains SRH’s poor showing this season?

Last week, Mumbai Indians (MI) had straightjacketed Sunrisers Hyderabad’s (SRH) batters on an atypically slow surface at the Wankhede Stadium. On Wednesday, they did the same in the reverse fixture at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad, sending SRH in and keeping them to 143 for 8. Getting to that total was a bit of an achievement for SRH after they had slumped to 35 for 5, with Heinrich Klaasen hauling them to something like respectability with a superb 71 off 44 balls. The most telling performances of the innings came from MI’s new-ball bowlers, however, with Trent Boult and Deepak Chahar picking up two early wickets each as SRH slumped to the lowest powerplay score of the season, 24 for 4. SRH were in danger of collapsing to a double-digit total when they lost their fifth wicket in their ninth over, but Klaasen and Impact Player Abhinav Manohar ensured that didn’t happen, putting on 99 for the sixth wicket in 63 balls.Klaasen played a number of sensational shots – none better than a reverse-scooped six off Jasprit Bumrah in the 19th over – but thanks to the circumstances SRH were in, his innings was necessarily one of restraint, as a control percentage of 86 suggested. The risks he took were measured ones, off marginal errors in line and length from MI’s bowlers. That he still finished with a 160-plus strike rate was a testament to his quality, with Manohar’s 43 off 37 balls and the scores of SRH’s other batters putting his innings in context.Interviewed during the innings break, Manohar suggested the pitch had been on the slow side, with the ball holding in the surface particularly early on. Despite that, he felt SRH’s score was not nearly enough. The early exchanges set the tone, with both Chahar and Boult swinging the new ball while also benefitting from the grippiness of the surface. Conditions still weren’t as tricky as SRH’s top-order slump made them look, though; both Travis Head and Abhishek Sharma were caught while going hard at the ball, slicing shots they were early on, while Nitish Kumar Reddy chipped a drive to mid-on.The biggest moment of SRH’s powerplay collapse, however, was the wicket of Ishan Kishan, who was out to a leg-side strangle for the second time this season. He began walking even though no MI player made a genuine appeal, and Ultra Edge proceeded to rub more salt in SRH’s wounds, showing no spike as ball passed bat. There was one more unusual dismissal later in SRH’s innings, during a double-wicket final over from Boult, who finished with 4 for 26. He sneaked a yorker past Manohar and hit the stumps, but the batter, sitting deep in his crease, had already disturbed his wicket while trying to bring his bat down to keep the ball out.
