Spurs have signed an incredible "freak talent" who could be their new Bale

The glory hasn’t always followed, but Tottenham Hotspur have had some truly world-class stars play for them over the last ten to 15 years.

The one who was able to cement his legacy with a trophy was Son Heung-min, but the likes of Harry Kane, Mousa Dembélé and Luka Modrić were just as brilliant for the North Londoners.

However, when it comes to a combination of otherworldly talent and entertainment value, it’s hard to look past Gareth Bale.

The Welshman transformed into one of the best players in the world at Spurs, and it now looks like the club might have a new version of him.

Bale's rise at Spurs

Ask any Spurs fan what season Bale hit his peak at the club, and the vast majority will say his final season, 12/13.

That campaign saw the Welshman reach levels nobody really knew he could, as he scored 26 goals and provided ten assists in just 44 appearances, totalling 3,891 minutes, which comes out to an average of a goal or assist every 1.22 games, or every 108.08 minutes.

Such a ludicrous rate of return for a team that only finished fifth was enough for Real Madrid to come sniffing, and one world record bid of £85m later, the Spanish giants got exactly what they wanted.

However, while the memory of the international legend at Spurs is a great one, things were not always so straightforward for him, nor was he always such a goal machine.

In fact, when the club signed him from Southampton in May 2007, he wasn’t even an attacker; he was a highly rated full-back.

That’s the position he continued to play, through injuries and poor form, for a couple of years in North London, until, partway through the 09/10 season, Harry Redknapp decided to move him up the pitch and play him on the wing.

The rest, as they say, is history, and while Spurs might not have another winger as devastatingly effective as Bale, they might have another international in the making who could be as good in their own position.

ing through the academy at the moment, from Luca Williams-Barnett to Oliver Irow, but there is one out on loan who could just be the best of the lot.

That youngster is, of course, Luka Vušković, who is currently on a season-long loan with Bundesliga side Hamburg, and by all accounts, is having an exceptional season so far.

In fact, the Croatian wonderkid has just been named the league’s rookie of the month, and has clearly won over the fans, with content creator Fiago claiming that he’s “the best 18-year-old center back I’ve ever seen in my life.”

That’s not all, though, as not long after the Lilywhites originally signed the youngster, respected analyst Ben Mattinson described him as a “freak athlete” and a “freak talent” with a “scary ceiling,” which sounds quite Bale-esque.

Combine these raving reviews with the fact that he’s currently playing in defence, still incredibly young, and has proven himself to be something of an attacking force over the last year or so, and the comparison is easy to make.

For example, in 36 appearances for KVC Westerloo last season, the Split-born titan scored seven goals and provided three assists, and in just four appearances this year, he has already opened his account.

Finally, he has already won a senior cap for Croatia, so it looks like he’s set to dominate on the domestic and international scene for a long time to come.

Ultimately, Vušković is unlikely to become a winger like Bale, but there is arguably even more hype around him today than around the Welshman when he joined Spurs, and he looks set for superstardom.

Worcestershire 206 for 5 (Hose 95, Kashif 51) beat Nottinghamshire 181 for 7 (Moores 39, Taylor 2-36) by 25 runsWorcestershire Rapids bounced back from a Friday night home defeat to North Group leaders Northamptonshire Steelbacks with a third consecutive Trent Bridge victory in the Vitality Blast, winning by a comfortable 25 runs.Adam Hose clocked up six sixes in a superb 51-ball 95 with Kashif Ali hitting 51 off 35 as the Rapids totalled a challenging 206 for 5 after being asked to bat first as the rain that had washed out the scheduled Blast Women’s game earlier thankfully disappeared.Tom Moores (39 off 27), Joe Clarke (31 off 24) and Liam Patterson-White (39 off 19) tried to keep the Outlaws in contention but Worcestershire’s bowlers served their team well by taking wickets at key moments, two each from Tom Taylor and Jacob Duffy, with Australian paceman Ben Dwarshius (1 for 23) outstanding at the death, conceding only 11 in his last two overs as the home side fell short at 181 for 7.Worcestershire’s total was all the more remarkable given they were 1 for 2 after seven balls as Brett D’Oliveira, stumbling out of his ground after keeping out a sharp delivery from Daniel Sams, was run out by the bowler, and Ed Pollock’s slog-sweep picked out deep backward square.Kashif’s aggression restored some order from a Rapids point of view but after hitting four fours and three sixes he perished for 51 at 74 for 3 in the 10th, skying one to long-on off legspinner Calvin Harrison. But Hose now took the initiative, clearing the ropes three times in going to 52 from 32, with Ethan Brookes backing him up with 32 from 19 before finding Sams on the midwicket boundary after the fourth-wicket pair had added 77 in 38 balls. With three more maximums, Hose advanced to within one blow of a third T20 hundred before he was leg before attempting to ramp Dillon Pennington in the last over but 18 off nine from Dwarshius took the Worcestershire total past 200 for the fourth time at Trent Bridge and the sixes tally to 11.The Outlaws chased down 227 here just over a week ago but were in trouble at 44 for 3 in the seventh. Lyndon James clubbed to mid-on in the opening over, Jack Haynes pulled sixes off Dwarshius and Duffy but skewed a slower ball from the latter to mid-off and Moises Henriques was easily stumped off former Nottinghamshire left-arm spinner Fateh Singh.Clarke’s attempt to kick-start a faltering effort brought him a second six as he slog-swept Singh but his attempt to clear extra cover saw him fall to a well-judged catch by D’Oliveira, Sams sliced to backward point and Moores fell to a similar shot, after which Patterson-White’s lusty blows proved not enough.

17-year-old Chelsea star is a "joy to watch" & just as exciting as Estevao

Chelsea haven’t always been known as a club willing to nurture their young talents. Rather, their past reputation saw them constantly loan out starlets to far-off outfits, far removed from first-team minutes at Stamford Bridge.

Just last season saw the Blues chuck out the likes of Armando Broja and Djorde Petrovic to sides such as Everton and RC Strasbourg on loan, with both players now no longer on the books of the Premier League giants, as their patience ran thin with their lack of senior chances back at their parent employers.

However, this campaign so far, the narrative seems to be noticeably changing under Enzo Maresca, with Chelsea’s last Champions League tie seeing a whole host of promising stars for the future in Estevao, Jamie Gittens, and Marc Guiu lead the line, as the youthful Blues convincingly put Ajax to the sword 5-1.

Even in the bread and butter of league action, the Italian has been unafraid to gamble on the next generation coming through, with his willingness to integrate youth players into the senior frame very much paying off against Nottingham Forest…

Chelsea's crop of rising stars

Josh Acheampong’s first-ever senior goal would get Chelsea up and running on their travels to Nottinghamshire, with this confidently taken header also signalling the beginning of the end for Ange Postecoglou at the Tricky Trees.

The 19-year-old defender has already matched the same number of Premier League appearances he made last season this campaign at four, with seven duels won against Forest, on top of just four of his 52 passes being misplaced, backing up previous claims made by his manager that he can be a “top player” down the line for his boyhood side.

With a second-half run-out also handed to him against Ajax, expect to see Acheampong start a lot more games moving forward, as he only grows more in confidence, having also been branded as “excellent” by journalist Ben Jacobs after his goalscoring moment against Forest.

He, of course, isn’t the only emerging youngster catching the eye in West London, though, with the aforementioned duo of Guiu and Gittens also standing out, alongside a hotly-tipped Estevao, who is already being lauded as “world-class” by scout Jacek Kulig, despite being just 18 years of age.

The ex-Palmeiras wonderkid hasn’t floundered under his intense spotlight, either, with two senior strikes already collected at Chelsea.

Yet, there is another starlet who looks to be as exciting as Estevao, now, despite very much being in the early days of his unfolding senior career.

The Chelsea teenager who's as exciting as Estevao

It will be intriguing to see if Maresca sticks with this youth-focused approach in the Champions League, the more the tense competition progresses, with this decision to play a very young side last time out – with an average age of just 22 years and 163 days – going down as a masterstroke.

Regardless of whether he continues to be bold with his selections or not, there certainly seems to be a bright future ahead for 17-year-old Reggie Walsh in West London, with the homegrown midfielder now going down in the Blues’ history books as their youngest ever Champions League player when coming on against Ajax.

He didn’t look out of his depth for the 24 minutes he was on the turf, either, with Walsh only misdirecting one of his 18 passes on the day, with two key passes tallied up from his cameo nearly unlocking the porous visitors even more.

Amazingly, this isn’t the first time that the 17-year-old has been trusted to perform on the European stage, with a 90-minute run-out even afforded to him last season in the Conference League.

He is yet to get up and running in the blue of Chelsea in the senior ranks, but goals and assists should come his way soon, you imagine, to rival Estevao, with the number 46 previously being lauded as a “joy to watch” in this capacity by one Blues content creator, when collecting six goals and two assists in the U18 picture from 20 outings.

While the revolving door of loans that once occurred at Stamford Bridge did halt some players and their development, a loan away from West London could do Walsh the world of good soon, with Estevao undoubtedly boosted by his senior success in Brazil.

Such a chance could come Walsh’s way in January, but until then, don’t be surprised to see he’s still being selected here and there by Maresca, alongside Acheampong and Estevao.

With a new professional contract having only just been penned, Walsh looks to just be at the very start of what will hopefully be a fruitful first-team journey at Stamford Bridge.

Eskinazi returns to the ranks in vain as Hampshire squeeze to victory

Former captain makes 94 but ends up on the losing side at Northwood

Former Middlesex all-rounder James Fuller returned to haunt his old team with a crucial unbeaten 43 from 26 balls as Hampshire squeezed over the line at Merchant Taylors’ School to keep their Vitality Blast hopes alive. The Hawks were under pressure at 157 for seven, needing 31 from 13, when the final ball of Noah Cornwell’s stint sailed over Fuller for four byes plus a no-ball – and momentum swung as the batter capitalised on the resulting free hit to crack six off Leus du Plooy.Stephen Eskinazi, who stood down as Middlesex’s T20 captain earlier in the day, led the way for his side with an outstanding knock of 94 from 48, sharing partnerships of 69 from 40 and 82 from 51 with Kane Williamson and Max Holden respectively. But Hawks seamer Scott Currie (four for 32) removed both Eskinazi and Holden, triggering a middle-order collapse as Middlesex shed seven wickets for 34 and fell below the 200-plus total that had looked likely.Put in to bat, the home side made swift progress in the powerplay as Williamson (25 from 22) flicked Sonny Baker neatly over long leg for six and Eskinazi plundered 20 from Eddie Jack’s first over.Benny Howell made the breakthrough with his fourth delivery as Williamson was bowled swinging across the line, but runs continued to flow from Eskinazi’s bat and the opener raised his third half-century of the tournament from 23 balls with a straight-driven six.Holden (33 from 26) played second fiddle, taking 18 balls to register his first boundary, but Eskinazi’s timing and placement was exemplary as he cut Currie for successive fours, with a hundred looking inevitable. However, Eskinazi was denied when Currie returned to rip out his off stump – the first of five wickets in 17 balls as Middlesex faltered during the death overs, clambering above 180 thanks to a couple of late boundaries from Luke Hollman.James Vince (27 from 17) began briskly when Hampshire replied, pulling Zafar Gohar for six and punching a string of back-foot boundaries off the seamers before he fell to a low diving catch at mid-off by opposite number Du Plooy. The new Middlesex skipper took a skier to dismiss Tom Prest in the next over and, when Toby Albert presented Hollman (two for 21) with a routine return catch, the visitors were uncertainly placed at 68 for three.Joe Weatherley batted aggressively, clubbing both Gohar and Ryan Higgins for straight sixes in his 41 from 22 but, when he failed to counter Hollman’s googly, the Hawks were back under pressure.Cornwell and Higgins picked up further wickets, but the left-armer’s lapse tilted the contest back towards Hampshire and Fuller finished the job with two balls to spare, hitting Higgins for successive boundaries.

West Ham flop now looks totally finished under Nuno after Potts' emergence

After months of misery and poor performances, there are now reasons for West Ham United to feel somewhat hopeful.

Yes, it’s still going to be a tough season for the East Londoners, but Nuno Espírito Santo got it spot on against Newcastle United and secured his first win with the club.

Moreover, several standout performers demonstrated they are ready for the fight, such as Freddie Potts.

The academy graduate was incredible and has to be a regular starter from this point onwards, even if that means it’s the end of the line for another West Ham ace.

The West Ham duds who need to be sold

While the win over Newcastle has certainly helped morale around the club, there remain more than a few players West Ham need to shift as soon as possible.

Fortunately, it appears that at least one of them is set to leave, with reports emerging that Niclas Füllkrug has his heart set on returning to Germany in January.

The former Borussia Dortmund striker has been a complete flop in East London, having scored just three goals and provided two assists in 27 appearances.

Someone who at least had a reasonably decent first season with the club, but needs to be sold nonetheless, is James Ward-Prowse.

The former Southampton captain was a constant problem in the middle of the park while Graham Potter was in the dugout, as he lacked the physicality and pace for the defensive side of the game and became increasingly ineffective going forward.

Moreover, with Nuno now freezing him out of the squad, selling him in January would be best for his own career.

Finally, although it may seem a bit early, it is likely in the club’s best interest to sell Mads Hermanssen before his value declines further.

The Danish shot-stopper might have looked good at Leicester City, but was woeful at the start of the season and miles off the level Alphons Areola is at today.

With all that said, there is one more player who might have been able to stay at West Ham were it not for Potts’ impressive display against Newcastle.

The West Ham ace whose time is up

While there were excellent performances across the pitch on Saturday, it would be fair to say Potts was one of the best players for West Ham.

Chalkboard

Football FanCast’s Chalkboard series presents a tactical discussion from around the global game.

The academy gem played with his heart on his sleeve, adding some real dynamism and power to the midfield, but at the same time, showed some real technical quality.

It was the sort of display that should see him start every game for the foreseeable future.

However, if he is to do that, and the likes of Mateus Fernandes and Lucas Paqueta are to play a major role this year, while Soungoutou Magassa is on the bench, the club need to trim their midfield options.

This, unfortunatly for him, leads to Andy Irving.

Unlike his teammates, the once-capped Scotsman doesn’t really bring any standout qualities to the team.He is not an overly technical player, and as fans have seen over the last few weeks, he is not nearly physical enough for the Premier League.

In fact, he started in the loss to Brentford last month, and in the aftermath, Jamie Carragher described the Hammers as “one of the slowest teams I’ve seen in Premier League history!”

Then, against Leeds when he was once again tasked with running the midfield, journalist Jordan Rushworth described him as a “National League standard” midfielder, adding that he “gets walked past every time an opposition midfielder has the ball.”

Ultimately, while that might be a step too far, it has become increasingly clear that Irving is not at the level to play for West Ham.

Therefore, with Potts now unignorable, the club should look to sell the Scotsman as soon as possible.
