Manchester United's 20 worst signings of the Premier League era

Manchester United have seen just five permanent managers since the formation of the Premier League in 1992 but plenty of players have come and gone.

It’s those that we’re going to be focussing on in this list as we whittle the many down to the few and look at the Red Devils’ 20 worst signings of the Premier League era.

Sir Alex Ferguson may have been a managerial genius and oversaw the gold era of Manchester United’s history, but he still made many mistakes in the transfer window. While Fergie’s successors have not exactly been successful on the pitch, they’ve made very similar mistakes in the recruitment department.

So let’s have a look at the 20 biggest Man United flops of the Premier League era…

Morgan Schneiderlin

First up is a midfielder who you may have forgotten even plied his trade at Old Trafford – current Everton and ex-France man Morgan Schneiderlin.

United tried to follow in the footsteps of their rivals Liverpool by poaching some talent from Southampton when they paid an eye-watering £25m for Schneiderlin in the Louis van Gaal era, but unlike the Sadio Mane’s and Virgil van Dijk’s, this Saints star was to flop at a much bigger side.

William Prunier

How could we leave Willian Prunier off this list?

When he was on the field Sir Alex Ferguson’s Red Devils would have been no worse off with an actual statue in central defence.

The former France international, somehow, is widely regarded as one of the worst players to ever ply his trade at “The Theatre of Dreams” and he’s now managing in France’s fifth tier.

Gabriel Obertan

Signing Gabriel Obertan for his all-star Old Trafford team and spending actual money on him, too, was hardly one of the Fergie’s masterstrokes – and it’s not the first time you will see the legend get his recruitment woefully wrong in this list.

The hapless winger made just 27 appearances in his four-year United career, scoring a mere one goal and only registering four assists, he did get a Premier League winners’ medal though.

Radamel Falcao

Radamel Falcao was hardly the first player to come to England with a huge reputation in European football and prove he’s not even near English top-flight standard, and he surely won’t be the last either.

Having scored bags of goals on the continent for the likes of Porto, Atletico Madrid and a resurgent Monaco team, the Colombian was given his big chance to shine in the Premier League on loan in Manchester for the 2014/2015 season.

Needless to say that he didn’t take it, with the striker finding the back of the net on four occasions and he even got another opportunity with Chelsea the campaign after, to show everyone once again how below-par he is in England.

Zoran Tosic

The picture above rather sums up Zoran Tosic’s time in west Manchester – the Serbian was surrounded by some wonderful players such as Michael Owen, Paul Scholes, Rio Ferdinand and more – and he was somewhat the odd one out.

This was because, like so many in this list, Tosic simply never had the ability to be a star at the world’s biggest club and that’s why he lasted only one term after joining from Partizan Belgrade in 2009.

Wilfried Zaha

Manchester United may well now regret letting go of Wilfried Zaha for well under £10m just four years go, however, this doesn’t take away from the fact that he wasn’t good enough for them.

£10.58m plus add-ons was a lot of money back in January 2013 and that’s exactly what David Moyes paid to capture him from Crystal Palace, only for the Ivory Coast international to appear on four unmemorable occasions – now Zaha is once again knocking on the door of a move to a “Big Six” side having come on leaps and bounds since then.

Memphis Depay

Louis van Gaal should have been more cautious knowing how many attackers purchased from his native Netherlands have struggled to adapt in England after thriving over there.

Look up Dutch Premier League flops in the dictionary and Depay’s name will appear.

Massimo Taibi

Southampton’s Latvian striker Marian Pahars (L) scores past Manchester United’s Italian goalkeeper Massimo Taibi (R) as Dutch Manchester United team mate Jaap Stam (2L) looks on during their English premier league match at Old Trafford September 25.AS

Few members of this list have an iconic moment in a Man United shirt to their name, although we must confess Massimo Taibi’s is seminal for the wrong reasons.

Having impressed on his debut against Liverpool after replacing Peter Schmeichel in the summer of 1999, the Italian let Matt Le Tissier score with one of the tamest efforts in Premier League history against Southampton a game later, and barely featured again.

Angel Di Maria

It’s hard to overlook our next United failure when it comes to the title of the biggest club-record signing dud in world football ever – Angel Di Maria.

To be fair to the Argentian, though, he’s since shown his true quality at Paris Saint-Germain.

However, under the weight of a £59.7m transfer from Real Madrid ahead of the 2014/2015 term, the Argentina star failed to make himself worthy of the famous Red Devils number seven shirt, providing little more than an eye-catching lob away at Leicester City.

Diego Forlan

A case of De Ja Vu here with Di Maria’s fellow South American Diego Forlan, a player that seemed to do extremely well at pretty much every club in his career apart from Man United.

Forlan was so bad at Old Trafford that it was laughable, as he somehow managed to rack up close to a century of matches under Fergie, who probably didn’t want to lose face after splashing out £6.9m on him, which was a large sum of money in 2002 football.

وأضاف: “الصفقة تمت مع توتنهام وكذلك الأعمال الورقية، حيث وقعا بالفعل”.

Heung Min-Son: The perfect template of a player made for Jurgen Klopp’s Liverpool

Liverpool ended their recent slump with a comfortable 3-0 victory over Bournemouth at the weekend.

Playing in front of a noisy Anfield crowd, the Reds duly delivered and took the lead after just 24 minutes when Sadio Mane dispatched a header past Asmir Begovic; his fourth goal in four consecutive matches. Liverpool weren’t finished before the interval with Gini Wijnaldum doubling their advantage with a wonderful chip finish that delighted Jurgen Klopp. After the break, Mohamed Salah wrapped up the points following a wonderful team move passing move.

The victory was an excellent response to claims that Liverpool were unable to cope with the pressure and Klopp will be glad to see his forward trio hitting form at the right time. The Reds posted excellent financial results last week and the German should have plenty of funds to add to his squad during the summer window. Further additions could be crucial to maintaining their challenge next season.

One man Klopp could look to when scouting for summer recruits sign is Tottenham maestro – Heung Min-Son. Valued at £45m by Transfermarkt, while Harry Kane and Dele Alli grab the headlines, the South Korea international has been a consistent top performer since joining from Bayer Leverkusen. The 26-year-old is enjoying one of his finest seasons to date and has shouldered the goalscoring burden in the absence of the England international.

Son has netted 11 goals in 15 Premier League starts this season as well as registering five assists for his team-mates in the process. A hard-working forward with an eye for goal – Son has all the attributes to be a success under the former Borussia Dortmund manager. The winger is comfortable right across the forward line and can be used as the central forward if necessary.

Now, we know Tottenham do sell when it comes down to it. Perhaps Son would be too expensive – even for this newly rich Liverpool – though he’s the profile of player Jurgen Klopp needs. If they can’t get him, someone who can perform a similar role to the South Korean would be ideal.

Someone like former Hamburg man would give Liverpool yet another world-class option in attack and allow Klopp to rotate his key men throughout the season. As he has proven at Spurs, he could prove to be a valuable member of the squad.

Blackburn fans react to Ben Brereton’s brace in the Premier League Cup

[ad_pod ]

Blackburn Rovers’ under-23s side progressed in the Premier League Cup with a 5-1 thrashing of Doncaster Rovers under-23s on Monday night. An own goal and braces for Ben Brereton and Joe Nuttall were enough to secure victory for Rovers’ youngsters.

Brereton will be particularly pleased to have found the back of the net as he has endured a tough campaign at Ewood Park so far.

Rovers signed the 19-year-old striker in August from Nottingham Forest on an initial loan deal that can be made permanent for £7million, as reported by the BBC. Tony Mowbray looked to have pulled off quite a coup in bringing the exciting striker to the club but things have not gone to plan since then.

As per Transfermarkt’s stats, Brereton has made 22 appearances for the first team so far this season but is still yet to open his goalscoring account for Rovers. Fans will be hoping that his brace for the reserves can boost his confidence.

After the under-23s match on Monday, plenty of Rovers fans took to Twitter to react to Brereton’s performance…

The Chalkboard: Tommy Elphick absence great news for Lukas Jutkiewicz

[ad_pod ]

Aston Villa manager Dean Smith confirmed on Monday that centre-back Tommy Elphick will definitely miss the second city derby with Birmingham City on Sunday as he will be out for “four to five weeks”, which is great news for Blues striker Lukas Jutkiewicz ahead of the weekend meeting.

On the chalkboard

The 29-year-old has formed a strong partnership with Che Adams up top for Garry Monk’s men in recent months, but while the in-form ex-Sheffield United attacker has been scoring left, right and centre, it hasn’t been as easy for his teammate.

In fact, the Southampton-born centre-forward hasn’t found the net in the Championship since the 4-2 defeat against – ironically – Villa at the end of November, and will be desperate to get back on the goal trail sooner rather than later as Brum chase an unlikely top-six finish.

Jutkiewicz has still made a big impact despite the drought though, providing seven assists for the promotion hopefuls during that spell.

Elphick absence great news

The Birmingham brute loves to throw his weight around and cause problems for oppositions defenders with his height and strength, and he will be delighted that he won’t be coming up against a fellow tough character in Elphick.

With James Chester currently out with a knee issue Smith has quite the dilemma ahead of the huge clash at St Andrew’s this weekend – Kortney Hause, Mile Jedinak and Neil Taylor are the likely candidates to start alongside Tyrone Mings.

Out of the three only the former is a natural centre-back though, and given his lack of football this term Jutkiewicz would surely fancy his chances of getting the better of him.

The 29-year-old has proven to be a thorn in Villa’s side before, and he will hope to do the same again following the latest eye-catching update.

A slice of Premier League genius: Michael Carrick

[ad_pod ]

Each week on Football FanCast we will be celebrating those special breed who lit up the Premier League with their unique brand of utter genius. This time out we pay homage to a Geordie metronome who made good teams tick and great teams better.

“I have always seen myself in Carrick”. That’s what Xabi Alonso said two years ago, when ruminating on the importance of top-end talent who put the team ahead of individual garlands.

“One of the best holding midfielders I have ever seen in my life”. That’s Pep Guardiola’s take on the recently retired West Ham, Spurs and Manchester United metronome and it is worth pausing at this early juncture to consider who Michael Carrick is being placed among in that assessment. “He’s the level of Xabi Alonso and Sergio Busquets”. There you go. That’s who he was up there with. Sir Alex Ferguson meanwhile deemed the pragmatic Geordie who won five Premier League titles and a Champions League under his charge to be “the best central midfielder in English football”. This is high praise indeed given that, at the time, Gerrard and Lampard were still roaming the nation’s centre-circles while Scholes schemed.

It seems utterly incongruous then, when looking back on Carrick’s two decades of stylish orchestration that began with an artful dictation of play in a Hammers shirt to becoming a seasoned pass-master at Old Trafford to acknowledge that he received just 34 England caps. By way of comparison Owen Hargreaves and David Batty each were gifted ten more. Jordan Henderson is currently on 48.

Who is your club’s worst ever January signing? The Pl>ymaker FC squad have picked theirs in the video below and they didn’t disappoint…

Incongruous? Try protracted lunacy because here was a rare emergence of a technically adroit fulcrum, who stroked the ball with in-built finesse, and had the intelligence to control the tempo from deep. He was, in an era when passion was still prized over nuance despite our better instincts, a fluke of continental poise, a calming influence we could and should have built successive England sides around. Instead he remained on the periphery, distrusted for his differences that would have made a difference.

What a waste and what a shame.

Of course there is a happy ending here, even if it came with the benefit of hindsight. In the twilight years of Carrick’s career a greater recognition accumulated towards his attributes and by the time he hung up his boots in 2017/18 he was finally and rightfully lavished with plaudits for what he offered each and every game. By then though it was too late, or at least it was regarding the international stage. To ration out thirty-four caps then burnish the guy with platitudes is like possessing an heirloom but keeping it stashed in a cupboard somewhere. And it’s only when the Antiques Roadshow comes to town that you realise it’s worth an absolute fortune.

Let us never make that mistake again.

In Carrick’s twelve years at United he made 481 Premier League appearances, 70 Champions League outings, and scored 24 goals; the latter stat decidedly ordinary but perfectly acceptable for a player whose role was to start moves, not finish them. Indeed he was only prolific once, with appropriately good timing scoring a couple of beauties in one of the Reds most famous European nights as Roma came to Manchester to protect a first leg lead in a Champions League quarter final. They left dismantled, humiliated from a 7-1 hiding. They left cursing the name of Michael Carrick.

From the opening whistle Ferguson’s men were scintillating and ruthless, showing a degree of adventure atypical to this tournament, especially at this advanced stage. United immediately made it known they were going to win that night with the only query being to what extent and much of this adamance derived from Carrick’s endless probing, finding Giggs or Ronaldo on the flanks or shuffling searching balls into half-spaces for Rooney. Within the first ten minutes Daniele De Rossi was chasing the shadow of a statuesque opponent.

Then he ventured forward, propelled to join in yet another attack. With twelve minutes on the clock Ronaldo fed the ball across and Carrick scampered onto it, twenty yards out. It is difficult to describe what follows next, so unusual is the execution. It is part curler, part chip, yet somehow with a low powerful trajectory. It is a golf shot that duly finds the target and Old Trafford erupts.

Sixty minutes in and the contest is over. United are five goals to the good and Roma have only scavenged pride to play for. The best though is still to come.

Once again Carrick strides forward into a vacant acre of space and collects a pass, the ball immediately under his control. Once again he’s a full twenty yards from goal. He adjusts his footing as an Italian defender rushes out to block and in one fell swoop curls a picturesque long-range effort into the far corner. It’s a beautiful goal. The kind you wish you were stood behind.

It is not the reaction of his team-mates or even the home crowd that stays with you. They are ecstatic as is the norm. It’s the Roma players you notice; with the keeper pounding the grass in utter exasperation and the nearest centre-back slumping his hands onto knees. They have been broken by brilliance and it’s hard to recall any team, anywhere being reduced to such a state from even the finest work from Carrick.

What a waste and what a shame.
