Tottenham Hotspur christened the opening of their impressive new stadium by taking the three points in a 2-0 win against Crystal Palace on Wednesday night, as 59,215 people crammed into the remarkable venue.

The north London came into the clash having only taken one point from the previous 15 available in the Premier League, and it seemed as though they would struggle to pick up a maximum return again before Son Heung-Min scored a historic goal in the 55th minute.

Spurs chairman Daniel Levy has certainly been a controversial character at times during his reign with the north London outfit, which has hardly been helped by the fact that the club hasn’t signed a single player in the previous two transfer windows.

Loads of Rangers fans have been reacting to some transfer news from the club, as Serge Atakayi has left Ibrox on loan.

20 year-old Atakayi has joined Seinäjoen Jalkapallokerho on loan, the Gers confirmed on their official Twitter account.

Before you start copy-pasting his loan side into Google, they are a Finnish team formed in 2007, and they already have a league title and two domestic cups to their name.

They will play their first game of the league season on Saturday against HIFK, though it seems very unlikely that Atakayi will feature.

The 20 year-old of course already has experience playing in his native league, having also represented Finland at an international level for both their Under-18 and Under-19 sides.

Able to play right across the attack, as is the case with so many young forwards these days, Atakayi is best on the wing, where he looked promising in his sole senior appearance for the Gers.

For Nathan Redmond and Southampton, things at St. Mary’s have been troublesome for well over a year.

That being said, of late, it has not been all doom and gloom with Ralph Hasenhuttl bringing some much-needed positivity to the south coast with his style of football, a style of football that is starting to get the best out of a player like Redmond.

The Breakdown

Under Hasenhuttl, Redmond has been finding the back of the net with the 25-year-old grabbing a brace in the recent win versus Wolves, and his Austrian manager has since spoken about how much he expects from the talented winger.

“We have a special relationship I think and he knows I demand a lot from him, not only if he has the ball but also if he works against the ball,” Hasenhuttl was quoted as saying by the Daily Echo when talking up Redmond.

“He shows in every game he is learning and he’s getting better,” the former RB Leipzig boss finished off saying.

By no means is Redmond alone, but the England international had simply not been doing enough in this Southampton team.

For a player with his ability, one goal throughout the entire of last season is not good enough, and Hasenhuttl is spot on to be demanding a lot more than that.

With his pace and dribbling, Redmond, who is valued at £16.2 million (by Transfermarkt), certainly has it in him to get into more goalscoring positions before firing home, something he is starting to do under Hasenhuttl.

The way the Southampton boss wants to play at St. Mary’s looks ideal for Redmond, with it now just being about the former Norwich City man needing to do the above more often, while maintaining the current level he is playing at.

Toby Alderweireld believes that Tottenham Hotspur need to win all four of their remaining matches to guarantee qualification to the Champions League, per The Mirror.

What’s the word?

Spurs lost to Manchester City on Saturday but were boosted in their pursuit to qualify for the competition by other results 24 hours later.

Both Manchester United and Arsenal lost on Sunday with Spurs safely ensconced in third, one point clear of the Gunners and three ahead of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side. Chelsea can potentially move above them on Monday night if they beat Burnley, but the north London outfit will have a game in hand on Maurizio Sarri’s team.

Alderweireld and his team-mates face Brighton & Hove Albion on Tuesday before games against West Ham United, AFC Bournemouth and Everton – they also face Ajax over two legs in the Champions League semi-final – and the Belgian is of the belief that only maximum points will be enough.

Speaking to The Mirror, the 30-year-old said: “Tuesday, we know the pressure is on us.

“We have to get three points, so we have to win all our remaining games in the Premier League. We want to get top four and the Champions League as well. We’ll try to get top four, because it’s important to be in the Champions League next year.

“Last season we were close, so I think we have to do the things that we’re doing now, try to improve and try to close the gap.

“But if you see the last four years how stable we are, always top four, always close, so I think just working hard we will close the gap.”

A major end to the season needed

Spurs cannot afford to take their foot off the gas.

Of course, they face a number of difficult games before the end of the season in the Premier League and they will also play Ajax over two legs in Europe.

If form takes a dip domestically, Tottenham may have to win the Champions League to be in it next season.

Alderweireld, then, is right to remind his team-mates of the battle they face.

Former Chelsea star Frank Leboeuf believes Tottenham Hotspur midfielder Christian Eriksen is a more influential player than both Paul Pogba and Eden Hazard, per ESPN.

What’s he said?

Eriksen, of course, scored the winner as Spurs beat Brighton & Hove Albion 1-0 on Tuesday evening.

The result leaves Spurs in an advantageous position in the race to qualify for the Champions League next season, and leaves them clear of Chelsea, Arsenal and Manchester United in the chasing pack.

And Leboeuf, a former France international, believes that Eriksen’s goal proved that he has more influence over his team than United’s Pogba and the Blues’ Hazard.

Speaking to ESPN, he said: “I really, really love Eriksen. He is a fantastic player.

“We can talk sometimes about Manchester United with Pogba and Chelsea with Eden Hazard but if there is one guy who can make the difference for his team it is Eriksen.

“He can find the magical pass or score the goal like he did against Brighton and he is a fantastic player.

“I think it just confirms that out of the top four teams fighting for the top four, they are the best team.”

Utter nonsense

This is the definition of a “hot-take” that only stands up after Eriksen has scored.

This season, he has scored six times and laid on 12 assists in the Premier League. Hazard, by comparison, has scored 16 and assisted 13. Pogba has scored 13 and provided nine.

Chelsea without Hazard would surely be out of the race to finish in the top four. United without Pogba would be lower than sixth. Spurs without Eriksen would simply play Dele Alli in a more advanced role and likely pick up similar results.

This is not to decry his match-winning display against the Seagulls or the fact that he is a wonderfully gifted playmaker, but to make the claim that he is a more influential player than both Hazard and Pogba is simply false, mainly due to the fact that those two players have much less quality around them than the Dane.

As an ex-Chelsea man, Leboeuf should know better.
