For once Kiwis favourites in Sharjah Cup

When Pakistan or India or both are playing cricket here either of the two is billed favourite even before a ball has been bowled

09-Apr-2002When Pakistan or India or both are playing cricket here either of the two is billed favourite even before a ball has been bowled. But not this time.Basking in the glory of last week’s win in the third Test against England and of edging out Australia from the finals of the tri-nation one day contest in January, New Zealand are regarded here “the team to watch” than the two Asian giants, Pakistan and Sri Lanka.Notwithstanding that two of their one-day specialists, Chris Cairns and Daniel Vettori are not in the Sharjah Cup squad, the Kiwis still look the most improved of the three sides contesting for the title and the $120,000 prize money. The New Zealand playing here and which will move over to Pakistan on April 18 for a three Test and one-day series, has undergone six changes from the team which drew the Test series 1-1 against England.Vettori is being rested following a back injury, Chris Drum has retired while Brendon McCullum, who did not perform well against England has been dropped. Also not included are the injured trio of Lou Vincent, Shane Bond and Dion Nash. From Pakistan’s point of view the man to watch is Nathan Astle. He is in great form. He has a commendable record against Pakistan already and with a one-day century and the fastest ever Test double hundred, both against England only two weeks ago, Waqar Younis and his bowlers may be well advised to draw an effective strategy against Astle.Kiwi skipper Stephen Fleming, who himself has been going through a lean period this summer, appeared quite confident during the net practice here on Sunday. “We must make the best use of his (Astle’s) tremendous form.”Fleming was apparently being modest when replying to a question he said, “we have to make best use of the available talent”. But Fleming has a point. His key all-rounder and the man who has been responsible for a number of New Zealand wins in the past, Cairns, is not here. And Fleming is obviously missing him. “Injuries are part of the game. We cannot do anything about it,” he added.New Zealand play their first match, the second of the tournament against Sri Lanka Tuesday.

Stewart: Man City will offer Tottenham Jesus in bid to sign Kane

Speaking exclusively to Football FanCast, former Tottenham player Paul Stewart believes Manchester City will offer Gabriel Jesus in their bid to sign Harry Kane this summer.

Kane continues to be linked with a move to the Etihad, with Sky Sports claiming last month that Manchester City have already launched a £100m bid for the Tottenham striker.

The same report also states that the Premier League champions would be willing to include players in any potential deal, and Stewart thinks Jesus could be one name that is put on the table.

On the Brazil international, the ex-Spurs star said:

“I think he could be offered in the deal. This is all dependant on the manager that comes in and whether he would want him.

“Jesus had a great end to the season. We looked at him as a replacement for [Sergio] Aguero and he didn’t quite cut the mustard there.”

If the worst-case scenario does happen and Tottenham are forced to sell Kane to Manchester City, then having Jesus included in the deal is a smart move.

The £54m-rated forward is Premier League proven and has a good goalscoring record in England overall.

Given that they are not in the Champions League, the north London club could find it difficult to attract another No.9 of Kane’s calibre, so someone like Jesus could be their next best option.

Sunderland set to sign Tyrese Dyce

Sunderland are set to complete the signing of exciting West Brom youngster Tyrese Dyce, according to a fresh report which emerged on Tuesday.

The Lowdown: Johnson plans for promotion push

The Black Cats came agonisingly close to securing promotion to the Championship last season, falling short after a League One playoff defeat to Lincoln City.

It is now Lee Johnson’s job to mastermind another promotion push in 2020/21, with new signings potentially needed in order for that to happen.

The Latest: Black Cats to sign Dyce

According to Football Insider, Sunderland have ‘agreed a deal’ to sign Dyce, with the 20-year-old’s West Brom contract expiring on Wednesday.

A club source has confirmed that he is set to join on a free transfer when his Baggies deal expires, having scored two goals and registered three assists in 22 Under-23s appearances for the Baggies.

The Verdict: Long-term prospect

While Dyce may not immediately arrive as a key first-team player, he is a long-term prospect with lots of potential, rather than a quick fix who could end up leaving after one season.

The youngster could possibly end up being a strong backup for Callum McFadzean at left-back, assuming he makes impressive early strides at the Stadium of Light, and the fact that he would cost nothing makes it less of a risk.

In other news, a pundit has slammed Sunderland for one key reason. Read more here.

Our last week here in New Zealand was filled with a mixture of emotions

Shane Jabaar04-Apr-2002Our last week here in New Zealand was filled with a mixture of emotions. We were ecstatic when we beat India in the semifinals last Sunday. It gave us a full week to recharge our batteries and prepare for the final on Saturday, 9 February. However, like when we first arrived here, the weather was determined to play a major role in the way the tournament was to proceed. The East coast of this region of the South island was hit by a huge storm and this meant that we were unable to train outdoors for three full days. It also meant that the semifinal match between Australia and the West Indies had to be postponed from the Wednesday to the Thursday which the Aussies won and only by Thursday evening did we know who our opponents for the final would be.During this week we had to struggle against the threat of boredom. A planned golf day and a visit to the beach had to be cancelled due to the poor weather. Nevertheless we managed to see at least 2 good movies, do a fair amount of shopping and was forced to improvise and move our training to the indoor facilities here at Lincoln University. Our squad of players was like a caged animal desperately trying to get out and run free. It was a long week for us, but finally Saturday arrived and we resigned ourselves to the fact that no more preparations could be done that would allow us to perform better. Despite the obstacles of this long week we did feel that in the end we were prepared as well as we could be for the challenge of competing in the Under 19 World Cup Final against the Aussies! On the morning of the match the sun shone as bright as ever and any thoughts of the storm that had prevailed earlier in the week was now a distant memory. Things seemed to get even better when our captain Hashim Amla won the toss for the umpteenth time in this tournament and decided that we would bat.We had a solid start to the match and at 12 overs we were cruising at just under five runs an over despite having lost two early wickets. From this point, things started going horribly wrong for us. We suffered two silly run-outs at crucial points of the match and was never really able to recover from this as we had lost two of our better batsmen. The fact that they were also our better players of spin was compounded by the fact that the Aussies were playing four spinners in their team. Things were going really badly until our wicket-keeper Zwelibansi “Bob” Homani came to our rescue and hit an unbeaten 53. Bob unfortunately ran out of overs an we ended with a score of 206, a remarkable feat considering the obstacles in the middle of the innings. The rest of this match was something we would prefer to forget. despite our bowlers bowling very well and consistently beating the bat, we were unfortunate not to take wickets and somehow lady luck did not smile on us with any “lucky breaks”. The Australians eventually beat us by seven wickets – a statistic we did not feel reflected our worth as a team – they were simply better than us on the day! To the credit of our players, they tried all the way to the end and should be commended for their efforts to have reached this stage of the tournament. No doubt many of our players will have learnt from their experiences at this World Cup and this can only bode well for our cricket.Later that evening we attended the final dinner along with the other semifinalists of both the Super League and the Plate Championship. It was an opportunity to mix with players from the other countries without the tension of competition in the air. A good night was had by all and certainly by the end of the evening, the bitter taste of defeat was beginning to fade.A lie-in on in the morning and an easy day of packing before the long flight home was our main activity as we awoke on our second last day in New Zealand. We were all bracing ourselves for the early start to our final day. We had to be up at 03h00 to allow us to leave for Christchurch airport at 04h15 to catch a connecting flight at 06h30 to Sydney and then on to Johannesburg. The only good thought that we had about all this travel was the knowledge that we will soon be back on South African soil. The tour had flown by from the first day we met as a team on 4 January and I think that I speak on behalf of the entire squad when I say that it was a fantastic experience that will remain in our minds and hearts for the rest of our lives. Our only regret would be that we did not bring back the World Cup.For myself and Anton Ferreira who accompanied us as a technical advisor, it is even harder to bear as it is the third Under 19 World Cup that we have had the pleasure of participating in without winning the big prize. No doubt other South African Under 19 teams will compete at other world cups in the years to come. Maybe they will have the benefit of our experiences here to allow them to go one step better and have a little more success than we did. They will however never be the same team, as the Under 19 team of 2002 of which, I can honestly say, “I am proud to have been a member of”.Farewell,Shane Jabaar (fizzer)

Michael Ball talks Everton, PSV and Denzel Dumfries - Exclusive

Everton and PSV Eindhoven probably spoke about Denzel Dumfries before the start of Euro 2020, says former Toffees defender Michael Ball.

While the Netherlands crashed out of the Euros in disappointing fashion after being eliminated by the Czech Republic, Dumfries still managed to have a good tournament.

Despite playing as a wing-back, the 25-year-old was able to come up with a couple of goals and he is now being heavily linked with a move to Everton.

According to Dutch outlet ED, the Toffees have been trying to get a deal done for Dumfries, with director of football Marcel Brands the one spearheading the move, and Ball reckons this has probably been in the pipeline for some time now.

“I think Everton and PSV held talks before the Euros,” the retired full-back exclusively told FFC. “He had a fantastic Euros. The gamble [not selling prior] has worked out for PSV.

“They would like to bring top dollar for him. They like to sell to the top clubs in Europe, in Spain, in Italy, in Germany, and that’s how they work as a football club.

“It’s a gamble PSV have played and it’s worked in their favour.”

Indeed, after his performances in the Euros, Everton’s pursuit of Dumfries looks far from being a simple one.

If reports are to be believed, it now looks like the likes of Inter Milan and Bayern Munich are also interested in the Netherlands international, complicating things for the Toffees to say the least.
