Wolves: Traore stars on opening weekend

Adama Traore’s name has been discussed in plenty of circles by Wolves supporters this summer.

One of those who initially deemed to be expendable, he could have left Molineux behind long before the Premier League’s opening weekend.

Wolves have found spending limited over recent months and with the Old Gold needing to rake in some more cash, it appeared as though he was going to be allowed to leave.

Instead, Traore has stayed in the Midlands and won’t leave unless a meteoric bid is submitted for his services. The longer the window goes on, however, the less feasible that becomes.

As Bruno Lage slipped to a 1-0 defeat to Leicester in his first competitive match in charge, his barnstorming winger positively and negatively stole the show.

Raul Jimenez was making his first league outing since that dreaded clash of heads with David Luiz last November but it wasn’t the Mexican making the headlines on Saturday; it was Traore.

This was the most classic example of a performance you’ll find from the 25-year-old. He ran the Leicester defence ragged but after doing all of the hard work, ultimately faltered.

Traore missed Wolves’ biggest chance of the game, going free on goal but then rolling an effort past the post when one-on-one with Kasper Schmeichel.

It was a moment in the game that proved decisive. If they scored then Lage would have been walking away with a point from his opening Midlands derby.

The manager wasn’t pleased with that moment and took his Spanish forward to task at full-time; “Adama has his abilities but he needs to improve other things for sure, the shooting. If he scores those chances it wouldn’t be at Wolves, it would be in a top team. We will work together to improve that skill,” he remarked.

That said, Traore’s all-around play was crucial in the match. He was a driving force and enabled Wolves to play further up the pitch in the offensive half.

The former Barcelona man is known for his dribbling and in this match, he recorded incredibly high numbers. He produced 11 successful take-ons during the 90 minutes and used his immense physical powers to reign supreme in battles with the defenders.

Dubbed “magnificent” for his display by Tim Spiers, the £46k-per-week speedster took part in a whopping 22 defensive battles too, winning an impressive 16 of them.

It’s evident that Traore is one of the most exciting players in the division but Lage is correct; in order for him to steal the show from a positive point of view more often, he must improve his end product.

India's batting under scrutiny again

Since the Asia Cup final, India’s acclaimed batsmen have had to endure an ego hammering like no other, and there seems no quick solution in sight and time is certainly not at India’s disposal with just a day’s gap between games

Big PictureSince the Asia Cup final, India’s acclaimed batsmen have had to endure a dreadful ego hammering. There seems no quick solution in sight and time is certainly not at India’s disposal with just a day’s gap between the first two games. Traditionally sound players of spin, the Test and ODI specialists are still groping for answers when Ajantha Mendis comes on to bowl, and an eight-wicket drubbing at the same venue on Monday only reinforced his threat after the two defeats in the Tests. The woeful situation is compounded by Virender Sehwag’s departure after twisting his ankle at practice. His double-century was the key to India’s victory in Galle and the two captains were only stating the obvious yesterday by stating his absence would be a big blow. That puts additional pressure on Gautam Gambhir as the man in form at the top, and it’s anybody’s guess as to who his opening partner will be. No replacement has been sought for Sehwag and questions will be raised over the omission of Sourav Ganguly and Rahul Dravid.Sri Lanka, on the other hand, have no such issues and will go in as firm favourites. The decision to play five specialist bowlers worked for them and not one bowler looked like a weak link.Form guide (last 5 ODIs) Sri Lanka WWLWW
India LLWLWWatch out forGautam Gambhir: His second-ball duck notwithstanding, Gambhir is India’s form batsman after Sehwag – his 310 runs was the second-highest aggregate in the Tests among batsmen of both teams. His ploy of walking down the pitch before a delivery may have an element of risk, but it only speaks of his confidence and intention of putting the bowler off his rhythm. Dhoni spoke about the importance of getting good starts, so it would fall upon Gambhir to bat responsibly without getting bogged down. With the limited resources available, Gambhir is probably India’s best bet at the moment.Munaf Patel v Sri Lanka’s top order: The only saving grace for India on Monday was Munaf’s ability to keep Sanath Jayasuriya and Kumar Sangakkara in check. He repeatedly got the ball to either cut back in or shape away from the off stump. In a match dominated by spinners, Munaf did the best he could in the conditions on offer, picking up the only wickets to fall in the chase.Team newsIndia would be forced to re-assess their combination after the drubbing on Monday, especially at the top of the order with Sehwag’s departure. Experimenting with Virat Kohli as an opener didn’t work so it’s likely he will swap places with Irfan Pathan who has been successful in the past as a pinch-hitter. With Rohit Sharma struggling for runs, Mahendra Singh Dhoni might promote himself to No. 5.India (likely) 1 Gautam Gambhir, 2 Irfan Pathan, 3 Suresh Raina, 4 Yuvraj Singh, 5 Mahendra Singh Dhoni (capt & wk), 6 Rohit Sharma, 7 Virat Kohli, 8 Pragyan Ojha, 9 Harbhajan Singh, 10 Zaheer Khan, 11 Munaf Patel. After the first ODI Mahela Jayawardene said Sri Lanka would retain the winning combination.Sri Lanka (from) 1 Sanath Jayasuriya, 2 Kumar Sangakkara (wk), 3 Mahela Jayawardene (capt), 4 Chamara Kapugedera, 5 Chamara Silva, 6 Tillakaratne Dilshan, 7 Chaminda Vaas, 8 Nuwan Kulasekara, 9 Thilan Thushara, 10 Ajantha Mendis, 11 Muttiah Muralitharan.Pitch & conditionsThe conditions are expected to be similar to the first one-dayer, so batting could get difficult once the spinners operate.Stats & Trivia Chaminda Vaas is only one wicket away from the 400-wicket club in ODIs. He will be the fourth after Wasim Akram, Muralitharan and Waqar Younis.Mahela Jayawardene has been dismissed only once by India at this ground in four matches and his average stands at an astronomical 228.Dambulla is India’s least favourite venue in Sri Lanka against the hosts, having lost all four matches to them. Since January 2007, India have tried out 11 opening combinations in 57 innings. Only two of those pairs have batted together more than six times.Quotes”They will definitely come back strongly. They have a very good side and a lot of talented individual players who can change the match for them.”
“The only option right now is to play more and more of him and that’s the only way of getting better. You can see a thousand videos but it doesn’t matter until you go out there and play him off the track from 20 yards.”
Mahendra Singh Dhoni says it’s just not possible to be an overnight success against Ajantha Mendis.

Clark glad to shed rust before India

Three one-day internationals against a struggling Bangladesh have hardly been the ideal preparation for an upcoming Test tour of India, but Stuart Clark says playing any cricket is better than none

Three one-day internationals against a struggling Bangladesh have hardly been the ideal preparation for an upcoming Test tour of India, but Stuart Clark says playing any cricket is better than none. The first two games in Darwin have been enormously one-sided, although Clark is just happy to get some game time in hot conditions two weeks out from their departure for India.”It’s been tough,” Clark said. “I won’t lie and say it’s been easy. It’s been tough because of the humidity. It’s part of playing cricket, it’s what the conditions are like in many places around the world where we play, so it’s something we really need to get used to.”Clark has had no matches under his belt since the Test series in the West Indies, which finished in mid-June. Seven overs in each of the Bangladesh games have started to get him back in the swing of international cricket and Clark hopes it is enough to mean that he is not too rusty in India.”It’s hard when you haven’t played for a while and you need to come back in,” Clark said. “Okay, the opposition haven’t been as good as they’d like to be, but it’s still a very good lead-in and experience for what’s ahead.”The postponement of the Champions Trophy left Australia with a hole in their schedule in the immediate lead-up to the India Tests, although a second practice game has now been organised. The bowlers must make the most of the warm-ups as they aim to acclimatise to the conditions, with none of Clark, Brett Lee or Mitchell Johnson having played a Test there.”We’re lucky enough to have all played cricket [there], whether it be one-day cricket, or IPL,” Clark said. “We’ll look at some sort of footage and draw on the experiences of the guys who did play there in 2004. We’re going a little bit early now, and make our own adjustments to conditions that aren’t like Australia.”The series is being played barely eight months after the end of India’s controversial tour of Australia, which featured a racism row between Andrew Symonds and Harbhajan Singh. Clark does not expect major fireworks on this trip regardless of whether Symonds tours, despite him being a “larger than life character”.”As much as what happened, people still love to see him playing cricket and people love playing against him and competing against him, because he’s that type of person,” Clark said. “The sides get on well, off the field especially. There’ll be a little bit of competitiveness … I wouldn’t have thought there’d be too much niggle as far as the nasty stuff.”Before Australia can completely focus on India they will aim to wrap up a cleansweep against Bangladesh. Clark said Australia’s batsmen would have to work hard in the seaming and swinging conditions if they batted first, although Bangladesh would need to lift to challenge Australia.”We expected stronger in the second game and they probably played a little bit better and we’re expecting the same thing tomorrow,” Clark said. “I’d like to see if we could do another number on them.”

Ex-Everton ace drools over swoop for £16.2m-rated ace

Former Everton star Michael Ball believes a move to sign Sander Berge could be a shrewd one for the Toffees.

The club have been linked with a potential swoop to sign the defensive midfielder after the Blades were relegated to the Championship.

Berge enjoyed a breakthrough season in the Premier League when Sheffield United finished ninth, impressing in his 14 appearances.

He has struggled with injuries, however, and missed a large chunk of the 2020/21 season as the Blades finished rock-bottom.

Since their return to the Championship, Berge has played twice, and Ball believes he was quite simply the best player on the pitch when they took on Birmingham City, even though they lost the game 1-0.

Speaking exclusively to Football FanCast, Ball made the claim that he is too good for the second-tier, saying: “It always seems to be the same clubs linked to the same players, I think Arsenal are interested in him again and also Everton but I watched his game last week and he was head and shoulders the best player on the pitch.

“He probably is too good for the Championship.”

Berge has made a total of 34 appearances for the Blades and has also won 24 caps for Norway. He is valued at £16.2m by Transfermarkt.

Sky Sports journo drops Levy verdict amid Kane saga

Sky Sports journalist Michael Bridge has defended Tottenham Hotspur chairman Daniel Levy over his refusal to sell Harry Kane to Manchester City.

The Spurs striker has been linked with City throughout the summer transfer window but a deal appears no closer to completion, with Kane coming on as a second-half substitute in Sunday’s 1-0 win over Wolves.

Reports have suggested that Levy is keen to receive in excess of £150m if he is to allow the England captain to leave the club.

It is not clear if City will make such a bid but their offers so far are said to have fallen short of that valuation.

Bridge has subsequently hit out at critics of Levy, who believe that he is standing in Kane’s way as he attempts to get his move.

The Sky journalist believes that Levy is well within his rights to demand the best possible deal for the football club.

He said: “I’ve been a critic of Levy in the past but I think they’re pretty rank, to be honest. He has every right to keep hold of his main asset if he doesn’t deem these values worthy enough.”

City ran riot at the weekend, with Gabriel Jesus up front, as they beat Norwich City 5-0 at the Etihad Stadium.

Dhoni and Zaheer give ROI the edge

Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s quickfire assault and Zaheer Khan’s probing spell that disintegrated Delhi’s top order put Rest of India in the driver’s seat to lift the Irani Cup

Mahendra Singh Dhoni’s quickfire assault and a probing new-ball spell from Zaheer Khan put Rest of India in the driver’s seat against Delhi in the Irani Cup. Chasing 378 for victory, Gautam Gambhir, unbeaten with a belligerent half-century, remained Delhi’s strongest hope with two days left. When Dhoni walked in at the fall of the fourth wicket, Rest of India were 227 ahead and Rahul Dravid, on 50, was in need of some support. Dhoni immediately went after the weakest link in Delhi’s bowling attack: Virender Sehwag. He slog-swept and pulled him for fours before reverse-sweeping to the point boundary and stepping out to hit another in to the sightscreen. While legspinner Chetanya Nanda maintained a tight line, Sehwag’s off spin lacked guile and dip.But after lunch Dhoni attacked the other bowlers as well; clubbing Nanda for a six over the long-off boundary, reverse-sweeping Sehwag thrice to reach his fifty, hooking Ashish Nehra for four and slapping Ishant Sharma through cover. By the time he left, caught off Ishant at gully, the lead had nearly doubled. Before his onslaught, it was Dravid who had steadily built on Rest of India’s 75-run first-innings lead. Delhi had earned the first points of the day after Ishant took two wickets in three balls without conceding a run in his first five overs. He removed S Badrinath with a quick lifter that dragged on to the stumps and two balls later produced a jaffa that Mohammad Kaif edged to the keeper.Nehra lured Dravid in to false strokes on a couple of occasions but Dravid mostly waited till the last moment before reacting. He maintained his focus throughout a near five-hour stay and only fell trying to cut a Nanda delivery that bounced more. Not a big turner, Nanda focused on the basics of flight, mixed with regular, quick legbreaks to keep the batsmen in check. Having dismissed Anil Kumble and Harbhajan Singh in the same over, his first spell eventually read 16-6-29-4. Later when the quicks failed to break the last-wicket pair of RP Singh and Munaf Patel, Sehwag tossed the ball to Nanda, who trapped RP with a faster legbreak. With Aakash Chopra having sprained his ankle while fielding and uncertain to bat tomorrow, Sehwag opened with Gambhir. But his was not a long stay; Zaheer exploited his reluctance to move his feet and bowled one that cut in to catch Sehwag plumb in front. Zaheer maintained the same line for an edgy Virat Kohli, who played across the line, and was trapped in front.Gambhir lead the fightback and was in no mood to allow the opposition to dictate terms. Munaf Patel, the second day hero, was ineffective and erratic. When he pitched one short Gambhir opened the face and dabbed to the third-man boundary. When Munaf attacked his off stump Gambhir waited and opened up at the last moment to steer it for another boundary. He negated any movement by walking down the pitch and brought his fifty up by charging and lofting Harbhajan for four over long-off.That was Delhi’s last hurrah, for Rajat Bhatia, who had till then proved a fine foil for Gambhir, tried to pull the day’s last ball before but only managed to edge to Dhoni.
