Zouma, Vlasic could start for WHU in Zagreb

The Athletic journalist Roshane Thomas has named three West Ham United players who could start against Dinamo Zagreb on Thursday.

The Lowdown: Busy schedule

The Hammers begin their Europa League journey on Thursday evening when they face Croatian champions Dinamo Zagreb at the Maksimir Stadium.

So far this season, David Moyes’ side are unbeaten in the Premier League with two wins and two draws and are only two points behind Premier League leaders Manchester United.

With a minimum of six fixtures added to their usual schedule this season due to their involvement in Europe, Moyes strengthened his squad with the signings of Kurt Zouma and Nikola Vlasic at the end of the summer transfer window.

The Latest: Chance to shine

According to Thomas in a Q&A for The Athletic, Moyes ‘will be keen to rotate’ his side in Zagreb ahead of their Premier League clash with Manchester United on Sunday.

Responding to a supporter’s question about how the club’s new signings would slot on, the journalist replied: “Good chance Areola, Zouma and Vlasic will start against Dinamo Zagreb next week. Moyes will be keen to rotate his side ahead of the game against Manchester United. Great that there’s loads of competition in the squad.”

The Verdict: Right choice?

Rotating throughout European and domestic competitions will pose a new challenge for Moyes at the London Stadium this season, so it’s little surprise that the manager is seemingly planning to switch it up for the trip to Croatia.

Areola made his debut for West Ham on Saturday against Southampton, a game in which Zouma was an unused substitute. The latter could forge a good partnership with either Craig Dawson or Angelo Ogbonna if he is given ample opportunity to do so.

However, in terms of Vlasic, with Michail Antonio ruled out of Sunday’s game against Manchester United due to suspension after being sent off at St Mary’s, the Croatian could do with being kept in reserve ahead of the tough challenge against Harry Maguire and Raphael Varane at the weekend.

Sam McCallum drops promising injury update

Queens Park Rangers left-back Sam McCallum has dropped a promising update on the injury he picked up in the Rs’ Carabao Cup victory on Tuesday.

What’s been said?

In a post on his personal Instagram account (via Football League World), the Norwich City loanee revealed that the knock which saw him withdrawn in the 66th minute of the penalty shootout win over Everton in midweek is only “minor”, before claiming he will come back stronger from it.

In his social media post, McCallum said: “Hopefully only a minor setback but will be back stronger.”

Fans will be buzzing

While it would still seem as if McCallum will be a doubt for the trip to West Bromwich Albion tonight, considering just how impressive the 21-year-old has been for QPR so far this season, the defender’s revelation that his knock is only minor is sure to have left fans of the club buzzing.

Indeed, over his four Championship appearances for the Rs this term, the £3.15m-rated man has scored two goals, as well as taking 1.5 shots and making 0.8 key passes per game.

The £5k-per-week defender has also impressed in metrics more typical of his position, averaging 1.3 interceptions, 1.8 tackles and 0.5 clearances and winning 5.5 duels per match.

These returns have seen the player who QPR manager Mark Warburton dubbed a “quality” talent earn an average SofaScore match rating of 6.92, ranking him as the club’s ninth-best performer in the league this term.

As such, it would certainly appear to be the case that the sooner McCallum returns to action, the better for everyone involved with the west London side, especially as fellow QPR left-back Lee Wallace is also sidelined due to injury.

SSC edge ahead with remarkable win

A round-up of the tenth-round matches of the Premier League Tournament in Sri Lanka

Defending champions Sinhalese SC clung on to their lead in the Premier League Tier A competition with a stunning victory, coming from behind to beat Moors SC by eight wickets at Maitland Place. The game was described by SSC coach Avishka Gunawardene as a ‘must win’ if they were to retain the championship title.SSC looked likely to concede the top position to Colombo Colts CC, who are not far behind after a four-wicket win against Bloomfield at Havelock Park. At the end of the penultimate day, SSC were in no position to win after being shot out for 126 in the first innings, trailing Moors by 275 runs. However, on a dramatic final day, SSC captured the remaining five Moors wickets for 31 runs, with offspinner Sachithra Senanayake taking 6 for 84. However, SSC’s task – a target of 307 off 71 overs – was still difficult to achieve. Their chase was not helped by a poor start: they lost their first two wickets for 25. However, captain Tharanga Paranavitana and Sri Lanka Test batsman Thilan Samaraweera came together for a massive match-winning partnership of 283 and steered their team home.”In the end, we won comfortably with nearly 15 overs to spare,” said Gunawardene, the former Sri Lanka opening batsman. “We had to score those runs in two sessions and it was not easy. But knowing the history of the SSC track, once you get settled, you have a very good chance of making runs. That is what Thilan and Tharanga did.” Both batsmen completed unbeaten centuries – Samaraweera finished on 154 and in the process completed 10,000 runs in first-class cricket, and Paranavitana ended with 123, his second hundred in successive matches. The win kept SSC seven points ahead of Colts, who still have a game to play. The architect of Colts’ two-day victory was left-arm spinner Sajeewa Weerakoon who became the first bowler this season to take 12 wickets in the match. His 12 for 70 on an under-prepared pitch (including a career best 7 for 40 in the second innings) helped rout Bloomfield for 159 and 119. However, Colts also faltered, falling for 87 in the first innings, but managed chase down a target of 192.Bathiya Perera’s century coupled with Sachith Pathirana’s all-round contribution (40 runs and 5 for 41) enabled Colombo CC to record their second win of the season. They beat Ragama CC by ten wickets at the Maitland Crescent and moved to third spot in the standings. Left-hand batsman Hemantha Wickremaratne, a former SSC cricketer now with Ragama, also completed 10,000 first-class runs during the match, and became the third batsman to reach that landmark this season after Lanka de Silva and Thilan Samaraweera.Nondescripts CC managed to avoid relegation when they picked up first-innings points against Sri Lanka Army at Panagoda. Kanchana Gunawardene and Sahan Wijeratne contributed 103 and 94 respectively to help nullify the spin threat of Seekkuge Prasanna (5 for 162). Nalaka Kaluarachchi’s century was in vain for Army fell short by 129 runs in the first innings.Jeewan Mendis’ all-round effort, 125 and six wickets in the match, ensured Tamil Union picked up first-innings points in their drawn game against Chilaw Marians at the Saravanamuttu Stadium. The search for the winner of Premier Tier B had to be put on hold after the crucial match between second-placed Panadura SC and Sebastianites, who are fighting to avoid relegation, had to be abandoned because of a poor pitch. The umpires called off the game after the pitch at the De Zoysa Stadium at Moratuwa broke up.A huge chunk of the pitch – about four and a half feet – came off at one end making it impossible to continue the match. At that stage, Sebastianites were 24 for 1 replying to Panadura’s first-innings score of 175. The tournament committee will fix another date for the match. Table leaders Saracens and Panadura are vying for the Tier B title which would earn them promotion to Tier A next season. At the bottom of Tier B, Sebastianites were fighting hard to avoid relegation to the Sara Trophy competition. They need first-innings points at least against Panadura to avoid that embarrassment.Third placed Seeduwa Raddoluwa lost a great chance to finish runner-up in the Premier Tier B competition when they were beaten by five wickets by Air Force in their final match of the season. The match, which was abandoned due to a terrorist bomb explosion on January 4, was continued at the same venue.Player of the Week – Tharanga Paranavithana
One of the inspirations behind Sinhalese SC’s bid to retain the Premier Tier A championship has been the leadership of their top-order batsman Tharanga Paranavitana. He had his first experience of leading a top club at the SSC last season when, as a result of circumstances, he was left to captain the team – the third player to do so during the season. The extra responsibility brought out the best of Paranavitana’s batting. He began in grand style, scoring 177 in the penultimate match against Bloomfield and then following it up with a career best 236 against Colombo CC – an innings which won them the title. He was the season’s leading run-scorer with 893 runs. Paranavitana, the regular captain, once again led from the front this season with back-to-back hundreds against CCC and Moors SC. “What is so unique about him is that he has a good cricket brain and a near-perfect batting technique. He may not look so elegant at the crease but he is very effective with his run-making,” Gunawardene said.

Napier will host the additional Test, the second of the three-match series, from March 26 to 30. The reworked schedule resulted in the dates for the second Twenty20 game and the first three ODIs being brought forward. The three-day warm-up match against a New Zealand XI in Lincoln between the ODIs and Tests has also been scrapped.BCCI secretary N Srinivasan said he was delighted that both the boards were able to agree on an extended tour. “My thanks go to New Zealand Cricket for responding positively to our request for an extended Test series,” he said. “There have been a number of issues for both boards to resolve to accommodate the new schedule and I am pleased we have been able to work together to achieve a high quality programme. To have such a strong mix of Tests, one-day internationals and Twenty20s will be good for both teams, and for cricket followers in India and New Zealand.”NZC chief executive Justin Vaughan said the opportunity for an extended tour by India was great for the game in New Zealand. “India are probably the most exciting side in the world at present – packed with superstar players, and the chance to see six more days of high quality international competition will be welcomed by all New Zealand cricket fans, and give our team a great chance to prove themselves against the world’s best,” he said.”We have worked hard to keep as much of the schedule as possible intact – the result is a tour where more fans will be able to see more games in more places.”India last toured New Zealand in 2002-03 and were beaten 0-2 in the Tests and 2-5 in the ODIs.

DOUGLAS FRIEDRICH, A MURALHA AZURRA

Douglas Alan Schuck Friedrich.

Já o time catarinense transbordava eficácia. E foi eficaz aos 39. Contra-ataque perfeito e gol de Júnior Dutra. Avaí 2 a 0.

Lo Celso slammed by Spurs insider

Speaking to Football Insider, Tottenham Hotspur ‘insider’ John Wenham has slammed midfielder Giovani Lo Celso and explains why he is putting Nuno Espirito Santo at a ‘huge disadvantage’.

The Lowdown: Lo Celso rusty…

The South American, signed permanently by chairman Daniel Levy in January 2020, has missed 29 matches through injury for Spurs since the beginning of 2019/2020 (Transfermarkt).

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/spurs-developments/” title=”Spurs developments!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

As such, he has been unable to contribute too regularly despite showing flashes of his brilliance when able – as evident by him getting on the scoresheet in the Europa Conference League already this season.

However, Wenham believes his inability to complete a full 90 minutes for Tottenham is consistently letting the side down.

The Latest: Wenham slams Lo Celso…

The Argentine, as a result, has been slammed alongside club record signing Tanguy Ndombele for being hinderances.

“Naturally, the usual suspects faded against Chelsea,” he told Football Insider.

“It was those players who are simply unable to complete 90 minutes, they are Lo Celso and Ndombele.

“Lo Celso is replaced every single game without fail on 63 minutes and Ndombele is the same, if he even plays.

“The issue that brings is we go into games having to guarantee two of our subs. That puts the manager at a huge disadvantage.

“Lo Celso hasn’t completed 90 minutes for Tottenham since back in July of 2020 and Ndombele has only completed a few games since he joined.

“If I had to name and shame some players it would be them because as always they can’t complete 90 minutes, it’s unacceptable.”

The Verdict: Time running out?

Lo Celso, while a brilliant player on his day, needs to start completing matches far more regularly to be deemed an asset for Nuno.

The 25-year-old, if he isn’t careful, could find himself at the centre of exit links in a similar fashion to Ndombele during the summer.

Of course, when injuries take their toll, it is always difficult for players to stamp their mark and supporters will be hoping his luck changes sooner rather than later.
