Leeds can sign Rodrigo upgrade in Ramsey

Leeds United could sign an exciting upgrade on Rodrigo in Juventus star Aaron Ramsey.

What’s the story?

According to a recent report from Calciomercato (via Sport Witness), Marcelo Bielsa’s side have their sights set on the Wales international as they look to reinforce their squad during the upcoming January transfer window.

Upgrade on Rodrigo

One of the big problems the Whites have faced since their return to the Premier League has been their lack of goals from midfield, with Patrick Bamford being tasked with a sizeable burden up front – last season, Mateusz Klich led the way for midfielders with just four goals to his name. In Ramsey, they would be more than addressing that issue.

Former Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger raved about the Welshman’s ability to get into the box and find himself on the end of moves, saying: “In my head, Ramsey was going to be a player between 10 and 15 goals a year. He is a Frank Lampard type. He is (about) getting in the box and he has a huge capacity to run.

“Physically, he has a combination of stamina, power and his capacity to repeat high intensity is certainly the best in the league.”

Described as an “outstanding technician”, Ramsey would offer Leeds that much-needed knack of getting into the box at the right times and scoring those poacher-type goals.

In fact, Lampard himself wrote in a column for The Evening Standard about the 74-goal star: “It will probably come as no surprise to people that I like Ramsey. Like me, he makes late runs in the penalty area and he showed that with aplomb for the second goal at AC Milan last week.”

With Rodrigo badly struggling for form since his arrival at Elland Road – he has managed only nine goals in 43 games, including just two in the Premier League this season – bringing in Ramsey would provide Leeds with a genuinely proven option in the English top-flight.

Added to reports that another goal-shy forward in Tyler Roberts has been touted with a potential exit in the near future, Ramsey could come in and take over from his fellow Welshman at Elland Road.

Meanwhile, Adam Pope has dropped an early morning Leeds United update…

Leeds: Phil Hay shares January plans

Leeds United correspondent Phil Hay has revealed that the club’s ‘intention’ is to act in the January window after the huge news of an injury to Kalvin Phillips.

The Lowdown: Phillips’ surgery

Marcelo Bielsa’s squad has been impacted massively due to a number of injuries this season, with plenty of key players sidelined.

Phillips is one of the latest out after suffering a hamstring problem against Brentford earlier this month. Liam Cooper and Patrick Bamford also injured the same muscle in the 2-2 draw with the Bees, whereas Rodrigo is sidelined with a heel issue and Pascal Struijk with a foot problem.

News emerged on Monday that the holding midfielder has now had surgery to repair the issue but is expected to be out for at least two months as a result.

The Latest: Hay’s claim

Hay ran a Q&A on The Athletic prior to Leeds’ defeat to Manchester City on Tuesday.

He was asked for an update by one fan in regards to any January incomings, to which he said:

“The intention is there after the injury to Phillips. But it will depend on budget and available options. You know the drill.”

The Verdict: Good news…

A midfielder appears desperately needed at Elland Road following the injury to Phillips. Bielsa has just four midfielders on the books, two of which are injured after Jamie Shackleton hobbled off at the Etihad.

That leaves just Adam Forshaw and Mateusz Klich as his remaining options, although Stuart Dallas can provide cover when needed.

However, it is clear to see that the Whites would benefit from a midfield addition for the second half of the season, and it’s good to see that owner Andrea Radrizzani is ready to take action over the coming weeks, should the right deal appear.

In other news: Leeds now back in for summer target who is ‘like a beast’ – reliable journalist.

Teams back to square one

Cricinfo previews the second Test between India and Sri Lanka in Kanpur

The Preview by Sriram Veera23-Nov-2009Match factsNovember 24-28, 2009
Start time 9.30am (0400 GMT)Big PictureAjantha Mendis, who has taken 26 Test wickets at 18.38 against India, is likely to replace Rangana Herath•AFP

Sri Lanka started brilliantly in the first Test but were thwarted first by Rahul Dravid and then the pitch in Ahmedabad. Momentum is an over-rated word, though, and both teams will start afresh in Kanpur.Experts reckoned that both captains were a little too defensive in the first Test and allowed the batsmen to dictate terms with easy singles. The main reason for that was perhaps the docile pitch but both teams will know that they must up their game if they are to go past South Africa and claim the No. 1 Test spot. Both teams had a few problems in the spin department: Sri Lanka went in with Rangana Herath, who was outstanding in the home series against Pakistan, but he couldn’t do much damage here. Muttiah Muralitharan too wasn’t at his best but Sri Lanka will still consider him as their first-choice spinner. Ajantha Mendis is likely to replace Herath as he is quicker through the air and the faster spinners have been more effective on Indian tracks. For India, Harbhajan Singh is yet to recapture the form he showed on the tour of New Zealand, where he was at the top of his game. The usually skillful Amit Mishra had a poor game, struggling for control and looking out of sorts. Will India see it as a one-off bad game and trust Mishra with another? While Herath and Mishra didn’t perform well the onus, though, would be on the senior spinners, Muralitharan and Harbhajan, to show the way.Form guide (last 5 Tests, most recent first)India DDDWD
Sri Lanka DWWDW
Watch out forThilan Samaraweera: His Cricinfo profile uses the adjectives adhesive and well-organised; to that, add prolific – he has averaged 81.56 in the last year. There isn’t a single shot that stands out in a Samaraweera innings but that’s a tribute, not a criticism. Solidity over flashiness seems to be his mantra and Sri Lanka will hope he never gets ahead of himself.Virender Sehwag flopped in the first innings at Motera and hit a fifty in the second that, though chancy, shifted the momentum of the game and no one will be surprised if he goes on to hit a big hundred. He has the game but is he in the mood for a substantial innings?VVS Laxman also failed in the first innings and stitched together a patient fifty in the second to help draw the Test. He has the style, the class and, importantly, the form; expect a big one from him in Kanpur.Team newsThere were concerns over the fitness of MS Dhoni but he has been cleared to play. The question mark now hangs over the second spinner, but Mishra is likely to be retained. Considering how Mishra struggled due to lack of match practice, India might also retain Ishant, ahead of Sreesanth who last played for India 19 months ago. Not that Ishant did well – but not many bowlers did on that placid track.India : (probable) 1 Gautam Gambhir, 2 Virender Sehwag, 3 Rahul Dravid, 4 Sachin Tendulkar, 5 VVS Laxman, 6 Yuvraj Singh, 7 MS Dhoni (capt/wk), 8 Harbhajan Singh, 9 Zaheer Khan, 10 Ishant Sharma, 11 Amit Mishra.Dilshan broke his nose after colliding with a team-mate during practice but he has recovered and will play. Fast bowler Dammika Prasad, however, is likely to miss out after suffering a grade one hamstring strain. He could be replaced by either Nuwan Kulasekara or Dilhara Fernando. The big question, though, will be over the second spinner to partner Murali. Will Mendis be given a chance?Sri Lanka: (probable) 1 Tharanga Paranavitana, 2 Tillakaratne Dilshan, 3 Kumar Sangakkara (capt & wk), 4 Mahela Jayawardene, 5 Thilan Samaraweera, 6 Angelo Mathews, 7 Prasanna Jayawardene (wk), 8 Nuwan Kulasekara/Dilhara Fernando, 9 Chanaka Welegedara, 10 Muttiah Muralitharan, 11 Ajantha Mendis/Rangana Herath.Pitch and conditionsThe last time India played a Test in Kanpur, they prepared a spin track to trounce South Africa by eight wickets. They even opened the bowling with Harbhajan in the second innings. This time around the curator says it will be a sporting track with the spinners coming into play from the third day. A lot of attention has been showered on the pitch in the lead-up to this Test.Stats and Trivia The Green Park has 20 Tests so far, of which 12 have been drawn. Recent games have been more result oriented, though, with only three draws in the last seven Tests. India have a good record here, winning three of the last six Tests and drawing the others. The last time they lost in Kanpur was way back in 1983, against West Indies. Samaraweera averages a cracking 115.33 against India in Sri Lanka but has a measly average of 22.40 from six innings in India. Muralitharan’s bowling averages too are similarly skewed: He averages a poor 42.58 from 12 innings in India. Virender Sehwag averages 50 in five Tests against Sri Lanka, but only 18.66 in two games against the same team at home. Of his 400 runs, 251 came in one Test. These two teams played each other only once in Kanpur, in 1986, and it was a high-scoring draw. They couldn’t finish even the first innings; Sri Lanka were all out for 420 and India were 676 for 7 when the curtains fell on the Test. In 20 Tests at this ground, only once has the team winning the toss chosen to field – India did it way back in 1964, in a drawn game against England.Quotes”It should be a good wicket to bat on and for a two-two [two fast bowlers, two spinners] combination.”

“I am not worried about my position in the team. I don’t believe that I am doing anything wrong with my bowling and the team backs me to bounce back soon.”

O JOGO

Kithuruwan Vithanage was the hero for Sri Lanka Under-19s as they took the tri-series by pipping Pakistan Under-19s by one wicket in a last-ball finish at the P Sara Oval.Vithanage made a nerveless 82-ball 75 to orchestrate Sri Lanka’s chase of 210. The last six home side batsmen contributed only 28 runs, leaving Vithanage to do much of the scoring from 98 for 5. Sri Lanka struggled to stitch together substantial partnerships – there were six stands worth between 26 and 35 – but Vithanage stood firm to finish the job. He was also helped by the indisciplined Pakistan bowling, which sprayed 16 wides.Sri Lanka’s lower order, though, did a better job than their Pakistan counterpart. The visitors’ captain, Azeem Ghumman, made a measured 65 to take the side to 134 for 2, an ideal platform. However, with none of the other batsmen crossing 25, the last six wickets went down for 38 runs.

Preview: Leeds United XI vs City

Marcelo Bielsa’s Leeds United side head into Tuesday evening’s Premier League clash with Manchester City in something of a slump in form, having won just two of their last ten league outings, leaving the Whites down in 15th place in the top flight rankings.

And, with a considerable amount of injuries currently plaguing his first-team squad, the 66-year-old Leeds manager has once again been left with very little up his sleeve regarding team selection for the trip to the Etihad, with Pep Guardiola’s top of the table City side surely being confident of taking all three points against their depleted opponent.

So, how will the Argentine coach line up his team against Manchester City this evening? Here’s how we think the Leeds starting XI could look, along with the latest team and injury news.

With Bielsa confirming in his pre-match press conference that none of Kalvin Phillips, Liam Cooper, Patrick Bamford, Pascal Struijk, Robin Koch or Rodrigo Moreno have recovered from the injuries that saw them sit out the Chelsea game on Saturday, we predict that the 66-year-old will make three changes to the team that started at Stamford Bridge last time out.

The first of these comes in the back four, with 19-year-old centre-back Charlie Cresswell – who Joe Wainman claimed should be a “mainstay” in the Leeds side – coming in alongside Diego Llorente, a switch which also sees Luke Ayling move back to the right-hand side of the defence.

In the middle of the park, both £60k-per-week Jack Harrison and Jamie Shackleton drop out of the XI after relatively poor showings against the Blues, with Stuart Dallas moving from right-back to central midfield, while Mateusz Klich also makes a return to the side.

Finally, in attack, the £22k-per-week Tyler Roberts – who Gabriel Agbonlahor dubbed “shocking” – makes way for 19-year-old sensation Joe Gelhardt – who is more than deserving of a start following his display against Thomas Tuchel’s side last weekend – while Daniel James and Raphinha move back to more familiar positions on the left and right-wing respectively.
