Rohit's triple and Baroda's near-miss

Cricinfo picks out the highlights of the seventh round of the Ranji Trophy 2009-10

The triple
It’s good to know Rohit Sharma has it in him to play a long innings. Never mind it came against Gujarat on a flat track, a first-class triple-century is a proud achievement. For a batsman considered to be the future of the Indian middle order, it had been a concern that the attractive 30s were not being converted into bigger scores. Consider this: the 322 balls he faced for his 309 not out was 28 more than what he faced in the whole of the 2007-08 season. Rohit is aware of the criticism against him. “This knock means a lot to me. Without doubt, this is my best innings,” he told the . “Questions were being asked if I was good for the longer versions. I have been through tough times, but this triple-hundred will change things.”Sow in 2008, reap in 2009
Karnataka played six matches in the league stage this year. They won four of them outright (two of them with a bonus point), and took the first-innings lead in the remaining two. No team in their group could get the better of them, not even in the first innings. Mumbai, on the other hand, won just one of the seven matches they played, scraped through into the top three, thanks to the four instances in which they managed the first-innings lead. But Mumbai, by the virtue of being the defending champions, get to play the Plate League qualifiers in the quarter-finals. We understand it’s an old Ranji Trophy rule, but it can certainly do with a revision: it is quite clear as to who out of Karnataka and Mumbai deserve to face the easier opponents this season.Pathans miss a trick
While there was no last-day fight for any of the quarter-final slots, Baroda gave Delhi a late scare for the final spot. Baroda started the final round with 10 points, and Delhi 15. As Delhi went on to concede a first-innings lead against Bengal and earn themselves just one point, Baroda knew if they could beat Maharashtra with a bonus point they could tie with Delhi on points, and scrape through on a better run quotient. It all seemed to be working out for Baroda when Irfan Pathan and Munaf Patel took seven wickets between them to set themselves a target of 101. The catch was, they had to win by 10 wickets in order to get the bonus point, and they also had to play out two overs on the third evening.Irfan promoted his brother, Yusuf, to open the innings. The reports: “On the very first ball, however, he stepped down the track and skied the ball to the wicketkeeper Rohit Motwani.” Irfan told the paper: “We had made a decision to send him in early to accelerate the innings and to ensure we had a reliable batsman who would survive the last two overs. Unfortunately things didn’t turn out that way.”Fallah gets a hat-trick
Yusuf’s rush of blood completed a staggered hat-trick for the Maharashtra left-arm medium-pacer Samad Fallah, to go with his eight-for in the first innings. This was the second hat-trick this season, following Karnataka’s Abhimanyu Mithun’s effort on debut. Maharashtra, though, didn’t have much else to cheer for as they were relegated to the Plate League. No quarters given
Since the two Plate qualifiers have the opportunity to face the Super League teams, we have a few rare match-ups. Mumbai and Haryana have played each other only once before, and Uttar Pradesh and Assam only thrice. And despite both of them playing in the Super League, Karnataka and Punjab have somehow avoided each other ever since the Super and Plate divisions were introduced. The last time they played each other was the 1998-99 semi-final, which Karnataka won by seven wickets.Look who’s playing the quarters
Former Mumbai players, Sairaj Bahutule and Amol Muzumdar, who represented Assam this season. Bahutule’s 25 wickets at 18.48, and eight wickets in the Plate semi-final helped Assam through. Assam’s other key performer was the former Maharashtra batsman Dheeraj Jadhav, who carried his bat through for 165 in the semi-final. While it’s unlikely that Bahutule and Muzumdar will come face to face with Mumbai this season, there is every chance they might play a league match against their old team in 2010-11.Bengal’s new opener
His 152 against Delhi may have come a bit late in the season for Bengal, but Sourav Ganguly is all set to open the innings for them in the East Zone one-dayers in Cuttack in February, reports the . The Kolkata-based paper suggested Ganguly will use this to get into groove for the Kolkata Knight Riders in the 2010 IPL: their regular opener, Brendon McCullum, will be away for a major part of the tournament. Laxmi Ratan Shukla, Bengal’s captain, approves. “I have absolutely no problem with Sourav opening. He is free to choose his batting position.”

Newcastle: Willock let Howe down v Man City

Newcastle’s abysmal Premier League campaign continued as they lost 4-0 to Manchester City at St James’ Park on Sunday.

The game got off to the worst possible start as miscommunication between Martin Dubravka and Ciaran Clark allowed Ruben Dias to nod in from close range. Joao Cancelo then scored a thunderbolt from distance to double the lead, before goals from Riyad Mahrez and Raheem Sterling rounded off the scoring.

Lightweight

One player who let Eddie Howe down badly in the game was Joe Willock. He was left out of the starting XI against Liverpool in midweek and was brought back into the limelight by the ex-Bournemouth manager, but the 22-year-old was unable to repay his boss’ faith as he put in a poor display against Pep Guardiola’s side.

The summer signing from Arsenal was hooked at half-time with the score at 2-0, with Howe seemingly not happy with the midfielder’s performance.

Defensively, he offered next to nothing. As per SofaScore, he lost 80% of his individual duels in midfield. He was also dribbled past twice, whilst failing to complete a single tackle, block or clearance and making just one interception.

This shows how lightweight he was in the middle of the park, as he was too easily beaten by Manchester City players off the ball. He did not get his foot in to make a successful challenge and was taken out of the game by the opposition dribbling past him with ease.

On the ball, Willock also struggled. As per SofaScore, he had far fewer touches (13) than Magpies goalkeeper Martin Dubravka (42). He also completed just seven passes and failed in his one attempted dribble. This shows that he did not do enough to make himself available in possession to get Newcastle up the pitch whenever they got the ball back off the visitors.

The 22-year-old let his manager down with a disappointing display as he failed to make a positive impact either on or off the ball, leading to his withdrawal at the start of the second half. He will need to drastically improve his performances if he wants to be a regular starter throughout the rest of the campaign, as this was a dreadful outing for the Arsenal academy graduate.

Villa fans react to club’s Traore tweet

Aston Villa may have beaten 3-1 by Chelsea on Boxing Day, but there was at least one positive – the return of Bertrand Traore from injury.

Traore played the final 17 minutes at Villa Park, having been brought on to replace Danny Ings.

It was his first league outing since the the 2-1 defeat at Tottenham Hotspur on 3 October, back when Dean Smith was still in charge.

The Burkina Faso international missed 10 matches with a thigh injury.

The £78,000-per-week winger is yet to start any Premier League game this season and has only played 70 minutes in total in the competition.

He will hope to change that when Villa take on Brentford in their first game of 2022.

Traore’s return could be a big boost for Villa

Last season, Traore recorded 13 direct goal involvements for The Villans (seven goals and six assists), a tally bettered only by Ollie Watkins (19) and Jack Grealish (16), so it’s no surprise to see supporters delighted by his comeback.

The official Aston Villa Twitter account tweeted that it was ‘great to have you back, Bert’, and here’s how fans responded.

These Villa supporters are big fans of Traore

Sarfraz call-up deserves extended run- Ramiz

Former Pakistan captain Ramiz Raja believes the PCB’s “big move” to call up Sarfraz Ahmed for the third Test, in all likelihood to replace a struggling Karman Akmal, is justified

Former Pakistan captain Ramiz Raja believes the PCB is justified in its “big move” to call up wicketkeeper Sarfraz Ahmed for the third Test against Australia in Hobart, in all likelihood to replace a struggling Kamran Akmal. He has, however, advised that Sarfraz be given an extended run behind the stumps.”This change is justified even though some eyebrows will be raised by this sudden coup behind the stumps in the middle of a series,” Ramiz told Cricinfo. “Dispatching an unacclimatised player straight into a Test match, that too against Australia, can be fraught with risk.”The key to success behind the stumps, he said, would be to keep the position stable. “The removal of a keeper is a significant selection call, for he is as crucial to the team as its leader,” he said. “This [Sarfraz’s] selection has to a be well thought-out, crafted move and not just a mere flirtation with the post. A constant change behind the stumps can have an unsettling effect on the team and its leader. If Sarfraz has been penciled in as a Test wicketkeeper then his tenure should have a sensible stretch.”Akmal, he said, shouldn’t be “embarrassed” any more. “He needs time out, while some would say that his time is up.”Akmal dropped four catches during Australia’s second innings in the second Test at Sydney, including three off Mike Hussey, as Pakistan struggled to break the ninth-wicket partnership between Hussey and Peter Siddle. Hussey went on to score an unbeaten 134, and Australia set Pakistan a target of 176. The visitors were bowled out 36 runs short, handing Australia an unassailable 2-0 lead in three-match encounter.Events on that final day, and Mohammad Yousuf’s captaincy and defensive tactics, have drawn sharp criticism from Pakistani observers and Ramiz joined in. The tactics, he said, mirrored the quality of captaincy in domestic cricket. “He [Yousuf] entered a fresh day trying to execute a plan that had already been neutralised by the same pair a night before,” Ramiz said. “It was a crazy piece of planning. Why would you want to put the shutters down so early on a brand new day when the second new ball is still in its infancy and just two wickets needed to take the team home.”How could the think tank, boasting of bowlers with more than 500 Test wickets, allow the fresh cherry to rot? The pattern to sit in against a set batsman [Hussey] and give him an easy passage to the non-striker’s zone, while trying to knock over the tail-ender [Siddle] is straight out of our first-class cricket. That the strategy got badly exposed at the top level only provides a stark reminder of how poor our first-class system is.”Other key lessons from the defeat, he said, included Faisal Iqbal’s ill-suited role at No. 3 and the end of Misbah’s dream run. He said the board needed to “change its avatar and win over a dejected nation.””Also, pressure can impair our openers to think straight. The PCB needs to think straight now…it’s time to revitalise a flagging club system, make selections transparent, especially at the grassroots level, assemble a lean and intense first-class format based on cities, install a cricket committee to look after cricket affairs and free itself of petty association politics.”

SA ready for any kind of pitch – van Zyl

Corrie van Zyl, the South Africa coach, believes that there is enough mental strength in his team to not be intimidated by the prospects of a turning track for the second Test in Kolkata

N Hunter10-Feb-2010

The one attribute that Corrie van Zyl admires the most in the South African team is the professionalism•AFP

Corrie van Zyl, victorious in his first Test as South Africa’s coach, has said that his team will not be intimidated by a probable turning track at Eden Gardens because the visitors are now mentally much stronger than they were on their last visit in 2008.Two years ago Dale Steyn had broken the back of India’s batting with a powerful burst of fast bowling in Ahmedabad to put South Africa one up going into the final Test in Kanpur a week later. India opted for a turning pitch at Green Park, which Steyn called a “bunsen burner”, won the Test and levelled the series. This time, though, Graeme Smith is leading a unit that is not just consumed by the possibility of beating India in India but is confident of doing so. That, van Zyl points out, is the difference between this squad and the previous ones. “Mentally, the South African team is better prepared,” van Zyl, who was appointed the interim coach after Mickey Arthur resigned, said.”It is still going to be a challenge to deal with turning wickets or whatever the wicket is,” he said. The South African think-tank has already assumed the Indians will opt for a pitch that play to their strengths. “India have more control over the conditions,” Smith had said yesterday after the innings win in Nagpur.van Zyl echoed his captain’s sentiments today. “I won’t say it would be a minefield, but I do expect something that will help the Indian team.”But the South African coach said they would not be in a hurry to change their gameplans, especially after they worked so well in Nagpur. Speaking about the aggressive bowling lines adopted by Steyn, Morne Morkel and Wayne Parnell, van Zyl said it was a conscious decision. “It would be part of our gameplan going forward. We need to make sure as a bowling unit we start operating together and we don’t work as individuals. That makes you a lot more effective.”Still there was an individual effort that stood out and that came from Paul Harris. The left-arm spinner had been targeted going into the series but produced a concerted effort of bowling to strict lines and lengths that clamped the movement of the specialist Indian batsmen, especially in the crucial second innings.”Just the fact that he bowled so many overs, and his economy rate, shows he was really effective,” van Zyl pointed out. Importantly Harris knows exactly what his role is within the bowling unit. He said that the decision to enforce the follow-on became viable only because Harris kept an end tight and delivered marathon spells on the fourth afternoon.Asked whether the leg-stump line against Sachin Tendulkar was deliberate, considering the batsman’s past vulnerability to such a ploy, van Zyl indirectly confirmed it. “The line of the attack is determined by the amount of the turn on offer and the line where it turns from. And we had to assess where it was more difficult to score against.”van Zyl has been part of the South African coaching set-up for the better half of the last decade and worked closely with various coaches, including Arthur. His previous assignment, before moving into the present job, was to deal with the emerging talent at the High Performance Centre in Pretoria. A fast bowler during his playing days, van Zyl said the most striking aspect about Smith’s squad was its “professionalism”.”I was telling the team and the team management that I was pleasantly surprised by the level of professionalism,” van Zyl said. According to van Zyl the main reason for the superior mental strength the players possess now could be the structure Arthur worked hard to create. “Credit must be given to Mickey and what he put in the place. That does make my introduction a lot easier.”Both Smith and van Zyl have no illusions about that the second Test, which begins on February 14, being just another hurdle that can be easily crossed. “If the first Test was a challenge then the second Test is a bigger challenge,” van Zyl said.Smith said an extra day’s break would be welcome given the amount of preparation that went into the Nagpur Test. “The guys need a few days’ rest to regain the mental energy more than anything else. This [first Test win] has taken a lot out of the guys,” he said. But he is not losing any sleep yet. “There is enough in the group now and we have beaten India enough number of times. I don’t think anything will surprise us going into Kolkata.”

O time trabalhou com Jailson, Mayke, Mina, Edu Dracena e Zé Roberto; Felipe Melo, Tchê Tchê e Dudu; Keno, Willian e Borja.
