Wigan Athletic 1-2 Fulham – Match Review

Hugo Rodallega scored on his return to the DW Stadium as Fulham secured their first away win of the season after seeing off the challenge of  Wigan.

The Colombian striker came back to haunt the club he left on a free during the summer scoring his first goal for the Cottagers to put them on the road to victory in the North West. The result lifted Martin Jol’s men into the top four for 24 hours at least while the Latics find themselves in familiar territory in the bottom half of the table.

An incident involving referee Lee Probert dominated the early stages as the he played the literal middle man in a a full-blooded challenge between Steve Sidwell and Ben Watson. Fulham started to take a foothold in the game and went close to taking the lead with Dimitar Berbatov denied a goal by Ali-Al Habsi on two occasions. The Wigan keeper first kept out the Bulgarian’s header before pushing his 24th minute strike over the bar.

Emmerson Boyce then headed wide for the Latics before Rodallega gave Fulham the lead, heading home after being expertly picked out by Berbatov. The home side’s went close to equalising on no less than three occasions before the break with Jordi Gomez hitting the bar, while Watson and Arouna Kone spurned good chances.

Bryan Ruiz came on for Fulham at half time and drew a good save out of Al Habsi from a 20-yard free kick before Mauro Boselli shot wide after James McCarthy’s effort was pushed into his path my Mark Schwarzer. Fulham made them pay two minutes later as Damien Duff produced a clinical finish after being teed up by Ruiz.

Roberto Martinez’s side did eventually find the net through Kone’s turn and finish in injury time but it was too little too late.

Ailing Europa League set for a lift

UEFA bosses intend to boost the profile of the Europa League by sending out a memo to top club managers imploring them to talk up the competition.

In recent times it has become an afterthought when compared to the Champions League and domestic campaigns, and UEFA want the importance of participating in Europe to be recognised.

Liverpool and Newcastle have not named full strength sides in the competition this season, which has led to some perceiving the Europa League as something that it is no longer valued.

The ‘rich heritage’ and the prestige of the competition providing some of the finest names definitely appear to be lost, but The Sun reports that UEFA insist the competition is still “dramatic”.

Tottenham manager Andre Villas-Boas appears to be the only one who has heeded this instruction so far, insisting on fielding full strength teams with the intention to win.

The next round of Europa League games commence on Thursday 25th October.

Solskjaer rules out Bolton role

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has ruled himself out of the running for the vacant Bolton manager’s post.

The Norwegian coach has started his career on the touchline in positive fashion, winning the top flight in his homeland with Molde since he took over in 2011.

The former Manchester United attacker knows the English game well and is being touted as one of the most promising young managers in the European game.

Solskjaer has been linked with a number of positions in the United Kingdom, with Aston Villa approaching the Scandinavian in the summer after Alex McLeish was sacked.

Solskjaer refused the option to move to Villa Park, and it is believed that Blackburn also approached him over their managerial position following the axing of Steve Kean.

With Owen Coyle recently being given his marching orders by the Trotters Solskjaer is one of the favourites to step into the Reebok Stadium hotseat, but this will not be the case.

“There will always be speculation when someone in England needs a new manager,” Solskjaer told Norwegian newspaper Romsdals Budstikke, translated to English by Sky Sports.

“There are surely 20 names who have been linked with Bolton now and it’s natural that mine is among them. But it’s not for me.

“Blackburn, Bolton, rumours crop up all the time. But I’m not that bothered about them.

“I’m absolutely certain I will see out the season here I can promise that,” he concluded.

Many Manchester Untied fans have dreams that their former striker will one day replace Sir Alex Ferguson in the Old Trafford hotseat.

Liverpool target La Liga stars

Liverpool are looking to complete an ambitious double swoop for Atletico Madrid’s Arda Turan and Barcelona’s Alexis Sanchez.

Brendan Rodgers’ side is short of goals so far this season scoring just nine times in the opening seven games of the Premier League, with five of them coming in a victory against Norwich.

It was the former Swansea boss’s decision, to let club record signing Andy Carroll go on loan to West Ham, but was dealt no luck when Fabio Borini broke a foot while training with Italy, ruling him out of action for up to six weeks.

TuttoMercato are claiming that the Anfield club are making a move for Alexis Sanchez to try and lure him away from Barcelona.

Barcelona boss, Tito Vilanova does not see Sanchez as a first team regular, as the Chilean has failed to start three of the opening seven games this season.

The 23-year-old did impress during his debut season, and could still draw in a transfer fee as much as £29 million.

Reports in Spain suggest that Rodgers sent scouts to watch Turkey’s recent 1-0 World Cup qualifying encounter with Romania, to watch self-confessed Liverpool fan, Arda Turan, who was also heavily linked with a move to Anfield during his time at Galatasaray.

According to Talksport, Liverpool are eying a move for the Turkish midfielder, as they look to continue to build a strong midfield alongside fellow new signings, Joe Allen, Nuri Sahin and Jonjo Shelvey.

Turan played a big part in Atletico’s European success last season and his performances have made him one of the most sought after midfielders in Europe.

West Ham defender praises Nolan performances

George McCartney has praised West Ham captain Kevin Nolan’s good performances and eye for goal this season.

The Northern Ireland international believes Nolan’s leadership has helped the Hammers climb up to 9th in the table, with four wins from nine games in the Premier League.

Nolan, aged 30, moved to Upton Park in June 2011 after Sam Allardyce was appointed manager. Many were surprised at the midfielder’s decision to step down a league after a solid season as Newcastle captain, but the former Bolton man was keen to re-unite with his old boss, Big Sam.

The Englishman was immediately appointed captain at Upton Park following the departure of Matthew Upson and was pivotal to the club’s promotion to the Premier League ,contributing 12 league goals in the process. This season, the attacking midfielder has continued to show his goal-scoring ability, netting four times in nine appearances.

Hammers left-back George McCartney, currently in his second spell at Upton Park, has told the clubs official website he holds his captain in high regard.

“Until last season, I had never played with Kevin, but had seen him scoring goals for Newcastle and Bolton, so I knew what he was about” said 31-year-old McCartney. “He is doing that here at West Ham and scoring important goals and for me, Kevin played a big part in us getting promoted last season.

“This year, his goals already have helped us get into the top half of the table. He is a big player at the club on and off the pitch where he has time for everyone. He is a great captain and a great lad as well.

McCartney will be hoping Nolan can continue his form in front of goal as the Hammers take on champions Manchester City at Upton Park this weekend.

Manchester City ace set to stay

Mario Balotelli’s agent has insisted the star striker is not set to leave Manchester City and the Premier League any time soon.

There has been intense speculation surrounding the Italian’s future following his failure to make the match day squad in City’s weekend encounter against Tottenham where they secured a 2-1 victory.

His fellow strike partners Sergio Aguero and Edin Dzeko have been in glittering form, ensuring the £23 million signing from Inter Milan has had to watch on from the stands.

Despite this, the centre forward sees his future lying at the Etihad stadium and would like to remain in England.

There had been rumours that Balotelli could be tempted to return to his native Italy and former employers, who are thought to be keen to acquire his services.

However, Balotelli is contracted at City till 2015 and his agent has insisted his client will see through the deal and force his way back to being a pivotal figure in Roberto Mancini’s plans.

“There’s no Italy and no plans to go there,” his agent, Mino Raiola told Sky Sports.

“He’ll work until the end of his contract. He doesn’t want to leave.

“There’s no player happy with not playing in a game, but he accepts it.

“It’s all part of the game. It doesn’t mean he wants to leave Manchester.”

Next up for Manchester City and Balotelli is a home fixture against Aston Villa where they will be looking to build upon their encouraging result against Tottenham Hotspur and continue their unbeaten run at home.

Fernandinho sets his sights on Manchester move

Shakhtar Donetsk star Fernandinho has claimed he is going to sign for either Manchester United or Manchester City next month but won’t confirm who, talkSPORT reports.

The Ukranian champions have had an impressive Champions League campaign this season qualifying in second place in group E ahead of current cup holders Chelsea.

Brazilian Fernandinho has been an integral part of this success scoring in the 2-1 win over Chelsea last month and his displays in Europe have attracted interest from a number of top clubs, but it seems Manchester will be his destination.

“I am closing a deal with an English club. I will play in Manchester in January,” he told Calciomercato.

The 27-year-old midfielder joined Shakhtar in 2005 and during his time has scored 51 goals in 273 appearances in all competitions while also earning his first international cap for Brazil in 2011.

Sir Alex Ferguson is looking to bolster his squad as his side look to reclaim their title from bitter rivals Manchester City, while City have had an indifferent start to the season after crashing out of Europe without a win.

However they are only three points behind Manchester United in the Premier League and will hope new additions to the squad in January can help them overhaul their neighbours. The two sides meet in the first Manchester derby of the season at the Etihad on Sunday afternoon.

Rodgers pleased with ‘magnificent’ win

Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers applauded the performance of his team after their home victory over Sunderland.

The Reds made it back-to-back Premier League wins with a 3-0 triumph at Anfield to move up to eighth.

Two goals from Luis Suarez and a strike from teenage attacker Raheem Sterling secured the points and pleased Rodgers:

“You’ve got to give massive credit to the players,” Rodgers told Sky Sports.

“They were magnificent. Looking at the tiredness of some of the teams right now, our intensity and pressure was marvellous.

“We played some terrific football against a Sunderland side under Martin O’Neill that have been very difficult to beat.”

Sterling opened the scoring after 19 minutes, latching onto a through ball from Suarez to lob Simon Mignolet.

The Uruguayan doubled the lead just five minutes later, holding off Carlos Cuellar before steering the ball into the net.

Suarez then completed the scoring after 50 minutes as he controlled a long-range pass from Steven Gerrard before sliding the ball home.

New signing Daniel Sturridge watched from the stands after completing his £12m move from Chelsea earlier in the day.

He was unable to feature against the Black Cats, but is in line to make his debut during Liverpool’s FA Cup clash with Mansfield on Sunday.
