Wolves boosted in pursuit of Van de Beek

Wolves have been boosted in their efforts to sign Manchester United midfielder Donny van de Beek, with the Dutchman now set to leave the club this month.

The Lowdown: Van de Beek struggles at United

The 24-year-old moved to Old Trafford back in 2020, having been a key man for the Ajax team that reached the 2019 Champions League semi-finals.

Van de Beek has had a nightmare time of things at United, however, making just 50 appearances in all competitions, mostly from the bench, scoring and assisting only twice apiece.

He appears to be completely out of favour under Ralf Rangnick and a January exit looks to be on the cards.

The Latest: Wolves given fresh boost

According to Algemeen Dagblad [via Sport Witness], it ‘seems inevitable’ that Van de Beek will move on to pastures new before the current transfer window ends. His situation has become ‘more and more hopeless’, leading him to pursue a fresh challenge.

Wolves are mentioned in the report, as are Everton and Newcastle United, as Bruno Lage eyes up a move for the 19-time capped Netherlands international, who has been hailed as ‘close to perfect’ by Owen Hargreaves in the past.

The Verdict: Worth the risk

Van de Beek’s reputation may have been damaged during an awful spell in Manchester but he can’t have become a bad footballer overnight and still has so much to offer.

At 24, his peak years should still be ahead of him, while 75 goal contributions in 175 appearances for Ajax shows how productive he can be in the final third.

Van de Beek could provide Wolves with the goal threat that the likes of Joao Moutinho and Ruben Neves often don’t bring, adding an extra dimension in the middle of the park to the Portuguese pair’s control and tempo.

Perhaps the funds for a move could be available through the expected sale of Adama Traore to Tottenham.

Winless Punjab take on bogey opposition

Cricinfo previews the 16th match of the IPL, between Chennai and Punjab at Chepauk

Start time 2000 (1430 GMT)Big pictureKings XI Punjab will be wary of Matthew Hayden and his Mongoose which wreaked havoc against Delhi•Indian Premier League

Kings XI Punjab’s horror start to the IPL, continued on Friday when they were defeated by a team they had never lost to before. Kumar Sangakkara would love to set the balance right on Sunday by winning against a team they have never beaten.Punjab may have lost all three matches so far, but none of them have been knock-outs. They will also take heart from the performance of fellow strugglers Rajasthan Royals, who shrugged off their long injury-list to get the better of Kolkata Knight Riders in Ahmedabad on Saturday.Punjab’s opponents, Chennai Super Kings, are again going to miss their star player and regular captain, MS Dhoni, but are high on confidence after two impressive wins in a row. Their home fans will also be eager to see the Mongoose bat which Matthew Hayden used to such brutal effect in the victory over the fancied Delhi Daredevils. That win featured the first significant batting performances from Hayden and stand-in captain Suresh Raina, their two most important batsmen along with Dhoni. However, Chennai’s bowling, with the exception of the accurate Muttiah Muralitharan, remains a source of worry – they have conceded 185 or more twice in three matches.Team talkChennai’s batting wears a settled look, and they are likely to go with the same top seven they played against Delhi. The only major selection headache for the Chennai think-tank is which of the Indian seamers should partner L Balaji – Sudeep Taygi, Manpreet Gony and Joginder Sharma have all got a game each without inspiring confidence.Punjab will have to decide whether they want to pick four overseas batsmen again, or whether to choose one of the South African fast bowling pair of Yusuf Abdulla and Rusty Theron, especially after Sreesanth’s two horror matches, where his seven overs have leaked 93 runs. If they stick with the four foreign batsmen policy, medium-pacer Love Ablish, who had a solid domestic season, is a potential starter.Previously…Chennai 5 Punjab 0
Chennai have won all five previous encounters between the two sides, including the semi-final of the first season in Mumbai. Most of Chennai’s batsmen have had at least one good game against Punjab: in the first game the two teams played in the IPL, Michael Hussey’s century overpowered Punjab, in the next it was 60s from Subramanian Badrinath and Dhoni, and Raina’s brisk half-century finished off the semi-finals early. Hayden bludgeoned 89 in the first encounter in 2009, and Parthiv Patel top-scored with 32 in a low-scoring skirmish the last time the teams met.In the spotlightYuvraj Singh’s return from injury hasn’t quite gone to plan, failing to get into double-digits in each of his three innings so far. A return to form is vital for Punjab’s most imposing batsman.Chennai’s fielding was one of the factors in their win over Delhi Daredevils – Justin Kemp’s one-handed effort ended Virender Sehwag’s onslaught, and Raina held a couple of smart ones to send back two other dangerous batsmen – Tillakaratne Dilshan and AB de Villiers.Prime numbersYuvraj may not have contributed with the bat, but he is Punjab’s most economical bowler this season, giving away only 5.55 runs each overSuresh Raina is third on the list of most sixes hit in the IPL, behind only Adam Gilchrist and Yusuf PathanChatter”I am surely happy on winning two games. But there are another eleven matches to go. We have experienced that one can go in superb form and suddenly lose the momentum.”

“We executed our plans on the field well but it was the first six overs that cost us the match… Hopefully we can turn around the results in the next games. The guys are working very hard.”

A round-up of the second set of warm-up matches for the ICC women’s World Twenty20

England women continued to brush aside all opposition, thumping Sri Lanka by 79 runs in the warm-up game in St Kitts. Claire Taylor helped herself to a 53-ball 70, studded with eight fours and a six. Her second-wicket stand with Jenny Gunn raised 88 runs in 62 balls to set England for a tall score. Gunn missed her fifty by eight runs, but Laura Marsh stayed put to get four fours away in a nine-ball 24, to lift the score to 160 for 5. Sri Lanka did not turn up for the chase, losing wickets at regular intervals to fold for 81 in 16.3 overs. Danielle Hazell grabbed 3 for 9, while Holly Colvin picked two sticks.India recovered from their defeat to England yesterday, and fought hard to beat South Africa by 23 runs in St Kitts. India were pegged back early by the cheap dismissals of their openers, but Mithali Raj came to their rescue yet again, with a 40-ball 45. The middle order seemed to be losing its way, as Harmanpreet Kaur and Reema Malhotra succumbed to run outs, before Jhulan Goswami stemmed the rot with a crucial innings. She added 57 with Raj, of which Goswami made was 39 off only 25 balls, with four fours and a six, as the score touched 140. Angelique Taai was the best bowler for South Africa, picking 3 for 24. Shandre Fritz and Trisha Chetty gave South Africa’s chase a solid start, adding 68 at a run a ball. Thereafter India’s spin trio – Gouher Sultana, Diana David and Priyanka Roy – got into the act, as South Africa lost their way, losing 5 for 47 in 44 balls. Chetty batted through the collapse, finishing unbeaten on a 54-ball 65, but it was not enough to see her side through.West Indies clinched a thrilling win against New Zealand in St Kitts, finishing the game off the final ball. Theirs was a combined effort with the bat – the top score was 31 – but Pamela Lavine and captain Merissa Aguilleira added an unbeaten 19 for the eighth wicket to chase down 154. Aimee Watkins, the New Zealand captain, bagged three wickets but West Indies held their nerve to come up trumps. Watkins had starred with the bat as well, scoring 56, laced with eight fours and a six, before retiring out. Nicola Brown scored a quick 30 to boost her team to a competitive score which they just about failed to defend.Australia thrashed Pakistan by 82 runs in St Kitts, skittling them out for 84 in a chase of 167. Only two Pakistan batsmen reached double-figures, as four Australian bowlers bagged a pair of wickets each to ensure there was minimal resistance in the chase. For Australia, Elyse Villani and Leah Poulton added 64 for the second wicket to lay the foundation for a competitive score. Poulton was more aggressive, striking five fours and two sixes in her 44. Captain Alex Blackwell remained unbeaten on 35 to take her team to a score that proved well beyond Pakistan’s reach.

Rangers contract news on Arfield

Many Glasgow Rangers fans have been left gushing over some contract news on Scott Arfield.

Speaking to the media before the 3-3 draw at Ross County (via The Glasgow Times), Giovanni van Bronckhorst admitted that he wants to keep the central midfield player beyond his current deal at Ibrox, which runs out this summer.

“He is an experienced player and he is definitely a player I want to have longer to be at Rangers. Hopefully we can welcome him next season as well,” the manager said.

As Gio says, Arfield has been ‘really important’ to the team, as he has played 25 games in total over all competitions for them this season, scoring four goals (Transfermarkt), and at 33 years of age, is one of the more experienced players in the dressing room.

Nonetheless, this seems to be a deal that would be very popular with the Ibrox faithful, and so they should tie him down as soon as possible.

West Brom: Masi drops Ismael update

West Bromwich Albion are considering the immediate future of Valerien Ismael.

What’s the talk?

That’s according to a claim made by Joseph Masi, with the journalist revealing in a recent video for the Express & Star (via West Brom News) that the Albion board are currently in the process of deciding whether or not the 46-year-old is the man they believe can steer the club to promotion this season.

Speaking about the future of the Frenchman, Masi said: “Look, we have to talk about Ismael’s future and it’s very much up in the air. We don’t quite know what is going on. We believe his future is very much under consideration at the very least.

“What we believe is Ismael’s future is under serious, serious consideration and I think that is only natural. I think at the vast majority of clubs, he probably would have lost his job, if we’re being honest.

“That said – and these are important points – there’s a person there, he’s a genuine person. He’s had a fallout with Sam Johnstone, from what we understand, and probably Robert Snodgrass as well – but, by and large, Valerien Ismael is a good man.

“He’s a likeable man and he’s respected. He’s respected amongst The Hawthorns’ hierarchy and he’s respected by the people that employ him. It’s going to be uncomfortable for them if they have to sit him down and have to relieve him of his duties.”

Fans will be buzzing

While it would appear as if Masi has no concrete update on which way Lai Guochuan and the West Brom board are currently leaning on Ismael’s future, the news that the Baggies hierarchy are in discussions about the 46-year-old’s position is nevertheless sure to have the club’s fanbase buzzing.

Indeed, it is clear for all to see that Albion’s results in recent months have simply not been good enough, with the Frenchman having guided his side to just three wins in their last 13 Championship fixtures – picking up 13 points from a possible 39 in this run of games.

Furthermore, West Brom’s form over their last six games leaves them sitting in 19th place in the second tier form table, and, considering the club have faced teams such as Derby County, Preston North End, Cardiff City and Millwall in this period – all of whom are in the bottom half of the Championship table – it is obvious that something must change if Albion are to maintain a promotion push this season.

And, with West Brom fans making their feelings abundantly clear regarding Ismael’s future in a recent poll ran by Football FanCast – with the vast majority stating that they would like to see the 46-year-old sacked if the Baggies fell to defeat against Millwall, which they did – it would very much appear as if The Hawthorn’s faithful believe that the factor which needs changing is indeed the Frenchman.

In other news: Major West Brom development finally emerges, it’s what fans have been waiting for

Durham set up tense chase after day of wickets

Reigning County Champions Durham need another 102 runs with seven wickets in hand to wrap up their second win of the campaign after a fluctuating third day against fellow strugglers Kent that saw 17 wickets fall

19-May-2010
Scorecard
Reigning County Champions Durham need another 102 runs with seven wickets in hand to wrap up their second win of the campaign after a fluctuating third day against fellow strugglers Kent that saw 17 wickets fall.On a Canterbury pitch showing signs of uneven bounce, Durham lost their last four first-innings wickets for 77 before dismissing Kent for 162 inside 50 overs to leave themselves 18 overs plus the entire final day to score 169 for victory. In the 90 minutes before close Durham reached 67 for three after 18 overs as Kent did their best to make amends for a dismal second-innings batting performance. Kyle Coetzer fell for one to a Makhaya Ntini off-cutter that moved through the gate to hit middle stump, while Michael di Venuto (10) needlessly pulled an Azhar Mahmood bumper into the hands of Amjad Khan at deep mid-wicket.Young left-hander Scott Borthwick (14) dragged an attempted pull against Amjad Khan onto his off stump, but experienced duo Ian Blackwell (18) and Dale Benkenstein (24) survived without further alarm to strengthen Durham’s hopes of knocking off the required runs.Kent lost their way in the match by losing six wickets for 114 in the mid-session, having worked hard to muster a first-innings lead of six. Skipper Rob Key (14) drove on the up to short extra-cover to make it 34 for one and, without addition, Joe Denly (20) was unfortunate to be given lbw when pushing outside the line of off stump.Geraint Jones (17) bottom-edged an attempted cover drive onto the base of off stump against Chris Rushworth, before Sam Northeast was dismissed by a Ian Blackwell arm-ball which hit off stump low down.Top-scorer Martin van Jaarsveld (44) drove two feet outside off to edge a full ball from Steve Harmison to second slip and, to the last ball before tea, Azhar Mahmood played outside the line of another Blackwell arm ball to go lbw.Kent’s slide gathered momentum when, six balls after the break, Rob Ferley (one) played across the line of a Scott Borthwick leg-spinner to drag onto off stump and Alex Blake (seven) was bowled through the gate by left-arm spinner Blackwell after one turned out of the foot-holds.Teenager Borthwick picked up a second when he had Simon Cook (five) caught at slip from a ball that grazed the outside edge of the bat and Phil Mustard’s right glove before going to first slip before last man Ntini was caught behind off Steve Harmison. At the start of the day South African Makhaya Ntini had bagged 5 for 84 – his first five-for return for Kent – as Durham were dismissed for 418. Ben Stokes reached a career-best 161 not out but Ntini, bowling down the slope from the Nackington Road End, proved too much of a handful for the Durham tail-enders as Ben Harmison and Mitchell Claydon both edged drives to second slip.Stokes should have gone to a catch at deep mid-wicket on 131 but Joe Denly was unable to hold on, but was left high and dry when Chris Rush sliced to point and Azhar Mahmood had last man Steve Harmison caught behind.
