In fairness to Steven Gerrard’s side, the scoreline isn’t a fair reflection of the game with the West Midlands outfit having 19 shots, eight of which were on target. However, it’s another poor result for the 41-year-old’s side.

As a striker, the Englishman will be judged based on his goals tally which right now stands at just five.

Having swapped the south coast for the Midlands last summer when joining Aston Villa from Southampton for £25m, the 29-year-old has struggled to find the back of the net on a consistent basis in claret and blue.

For the Saints, Ings scored an impressive 46 goals in 100 matches at a tally of a goal every 2.17 games. At Villa, the forward’s tally stands at one every five matches.

Against Tottenham, the Englishman was lively in the area, but it was clinical edge that he was lacking, seeing three shots blocked, two go off target and one saved.

However, throughout his 70-minute spell, the striker was limited to just 29 touches, according to SofaScore, losing possession on eight occasions, an average of every 3.6 touches.

The 29-year-old also recorded a disappointing 69% passing accuracy and failed to make a block or interception.

It’s still a puzzle that Gerrard is trying to solve with Ollie Watkins also enduring a quiet campaign for his standards this term.

The 26-year-old has netted eight goals this season having scored 16 in his first campaign as a Villa player.

Finding a system that incorporates both players and allows them to fulfil their maximum ability has been a struggle all season for both Gerrard and his predecessor Dean Smith and will certainly be a priority for the Villa boss over the summer.

If not, it may mean that after just one year at Villa Park Ings’ tenure in claret and blue could come to a conclusion. Saturday was certainly a test for the Englishman to see if he could enjoy a change in fortunes, one that he ultimately failed.

In a recent Q&A on football.london, the Tottenham correspondent revealed that, despite both players impressing on their respective loans away from north London, neither midfielder looks to have a future under Antonio Conte – with Fabio Paratici expected to try and move both players on permanently this summer.

Regarding the duo’s future at the Spurs, Gold said: “I think it would be tough now for both players to feature under Conte.

“Lo Celso should have suitors this summer as he has impressed in the Champions League against some big sides, but Ndombele could be harder to get the kind of money for that Spurs will want in return for their club-record signing. Another loan might be the only way forward as he just doesn’t seem to be a Conte player.”

Considering the sheer amount of money Tottenham spent on the signings of the €60m (£55m) Lo Celso and the €72m (£60m) Ndombele, coupled with the pair’s extremely poor returns for Spurs, the argument that Conte must do all he can to rid himself of the duo this summer is an easy one to make.

Indeed, over Lo Celso’s nine Premier League appearances this season, the £19.8m-rated dud failed to make any sort of mark for Tottenham, scoring no goals, registering no assists and creating two big chances for his teammates, as well as making an average of just 0.1 interceptions, 0.9 tackles, 13.9 passes and winning 2.7 duels per game.

These returns saw the £100k-per-week Argentina international who John Wenham dubbed a “disaster” average a disappointing SofaScore match rating of 6.72, ranking him as Conte’s sixth-worst player in the English top flight.

Meanwhile, over Ndombele’s nine league outings this term, the £31.5m-rated flop also failed to impress, scoring one goal, registering one assist and creating one big chance, in addition to making an average of a mere 0.1 interceptions, 1.1 tackles, 25.6 passes and winning 3.6 duels per fixture.

These returns saw the £120k-per-week France international who – alongside Lo Celso – Wenham also labelled “embarrassing” average an extremely disappointing SofaScore match rating of 6.58, ranking him as Tottenham’s third-worst performer in the Premier League.

As such, considering the fact that Lo Celso and Ndombele are costing Spurs around £220k-per-week in wages, not to mention their combined £115m transfer fee, it is clear for all to see that both players simply must be moved on at the end of the current campaign – as the money generated from their sales – as well as the significant amount of wage budget their departures would free up – is something that could be put to much better use by Conte and Paratici this summer.

Nottinghamshire’s chances of winning a Championship title that they were once indisputable frontrunners for took a further blow as the Manchester weather inspired to restrict play to just 27 overs on the second day at Old Trafford.Having desperately hoped for sun to dry the pools of water that had developed on the outfield through the early part of the day, the Nottinghamshire batsmen were left cursing their good fortune as the bright sun that allowed play to start ended up forcing the players off again when it reflected off the media straight into the batmen’s eyes late in the afternoon.The setting sun has always been a problem at Old Trafford and the issue is being remedied next season by rotating the pitch 90 degrees, but after leaden skies and persistent rain had prevented play in a crucial game for 30 hours it was a farcical spectacle to see the players forced off for 25 minutes with the field bathed in perfect sunshine.Nottinghamshire may well feel that fate has conspired against them but they tried to make the most of the 27 overs of play possible. With Yorkshire making good progress against Kent and Somerset moving to top of the table after dismissing Durham for 286, Nottinghamshire needed to move quickly.Alex Hales and Paul Franks set an ideal tone by adding 31 off the first four overs of the day and the pair brought up the 50 stand off 49 deliveries with Hales in particular punishing some loose offerings from Sajid Mahmood.While the openers were enjoying themselves there was the lurking worry that conditions may be too benign for the bowlers to force a result later on. Gary Keedy managed to extract significant turn when he was introduced in the 10th over, but Nottinghamshire’s only spin option is Samit Patel.Keedy troubled both batsmen before removing Hales with a ball that spun sharply from around the wicket and took the edge as the batsman tried to defend.
