Maligned Man United star can be England’s hero against Italy

Much-maligned Manchester United forward Danny Welbeck hits like a spoonful of outdated Marmite; many hate him, others are prepared to abide him, but nobody loves him or particularly enjoys the experience.

The 23 year-old draws many comparisons another controversial England forward – Emile Heskey. Not only because both attackers attempt make up for their glaring inadequacies in front of goal by asserting their physicality whenever possible, but because both have emerged as favourites of Three Lions managers seemingly without ever justifying such coveted status at club level.

But tomorrow night, Welbeck has the opportunity for redemption. England face Italy in their opening World Cup fixture, a result which will set the precedent for the Three Lions’ two remaining matches in Group  D. In other words, losing to the Azzurri is not an option, unless England’s shaky defence is prepared to take its chances against two of Europe’s hottest strikers in Uruguay’s Edinson Cavani and Luis Suarez.

If we are to beat Cesare Prandelli’s men, lessons will have to be learned from Euro 2012, where Italy knocked out England in the quarter-finals. Losing in a penalty shootout might initially spur emotions and hypotheses of the Three Lions once again coming undone by some great act of fate, but in truth, from the opening minute to the final whistle, the Italians had us firmly pinned against the ropes.

At the heart of that dominant display was Andrea Pirlo, who finished the match with more touches of the ball than the entire England midfield and was named UEFA’s Man of the Match. Like a fine wine, the 35 year-old’s abilities as the world’s best deep-lying playmaker have only improved since he last faced the Three Lions two years ago. In that time, the bearded maestro has claimed two Serie A titles with Juventus and won the division’s Player of the Year award.

Unless Roy Hodgson elects a player to shackle Pirlo in his pocket of space in front of the defence, as Manchester United famously did in 2010 whilst he was still at AC Milan, it will be groundhog day for England. The Italian international applies an amusing tone when discussing how Park Ji Sung shadowed and stalked him that night in his recently released autobiography, referring to him as a ‘nuclear-powered electron’,  but there’s no doubt the South Korean had the desired effect; United went on to claim a 7-2 aggregate victory over the San Siro side.

In truth, there are many candidates amongst the England squad for that unique role. The renowned industriousness of Wayne Rooney and James Milner verges upon cliché, Phil Jones’ ability to mark specific individuals out of games has earned the Red Devils valuable wins on big occasions before,  and despite natural assumptions otherwise, Raheem Sterling boasts an impressive defensive statistic of 1.3 tackles per match for Liverpool this season, even used as a right wing-back by Brendan Rodgers on occasion.

But to cast your mind back to last season, of all the talent on the Old Trafford roster, Sir Alex Ferguson chose Danny Welbeck to man-mark Xabi Alonso during a Champions League quarter-final against Real Madrid – a player who may offer greater defensive awareness and forcefulness, but essentially shares the same quarterback role as Pirlo in the Los Blancos starting XI.

That match will be mostly remembered for Nani’s controversial red card which quickly decided the outcome. But whilst all 22 men were still on the pitch, it was Welbeck in his delicately-designed dual role that had the biggest impact.

The England international understood the job at hand perfectly; he not only removed Alonso from the game, continually refusing him the time required to pick out those trademark 40-yard through balls, but going forward he made runs off the Spaniard’s back, exploiting the space left behind.

The combined effect left Alonso concentrating more on what was going on behind him than in front of him – if Welbeck can make Pirlo do the same tomorrow evening, the chances of England taking all three points against Italy will dramatically improve.

Of course, there are gaps in the theory – handing the 23 year-old a more central role would require removing Wayne Rooney from his customary No.10 position, shifting him to a less influential capacity on the wing or even dropping him completely. Likewise, although I believe taking Pirlo out of the game is a necessity for England, remodelling the starting XI to facilitate for the quality of a single player can leave us open to less foreseen threats – let’s not forget that the Azzurri squad includes such talents as Mario Balotelli, Claudio Machisio, Marco Veratti, Antonio Cassano and relative unknown Circo Immobile, all of whom are potential match-winners.

But in terms of athleticism, work-rate and tactical understanding, Welbeck is by far the strongest candidate at Roy Hodgson’s disposal. If Park Ji Sung was a nuclear-powered electron, the United forward is at least a Duracell bunny plugged into the mains.

FIVE reasons Balotelli WILL become a Liverpool hero

He may not have made a blistering start to life back in England, but Mario Balotelli has still been grabbing the headlines. The roguish striker has endured a turbulent career, but Liverpool have taken a “calculated risk”, according to their manager, on him as they look to rebuild after the exit of Luis Suarez.

‘Super Mario’ has all the ability needed to be a top class player, but doubts about his behaviour and motivation have been bubbling away for some time. Yet we at FFC Towers think he could find himself at Anfield, and here are five reasons why things are about to get better for him…

[ffc-gallery]

[/ffc-gallery]

[ad_pod id=’fr2rumours’ align=’center’]

He functions well with Daniel Sturridge

The sense of relief when Balotelli poked the ball home against Ludogorets Razgrad during the midweek Champions League clash was almost palpable. The Italian, making his third start for the Reds, was beginning to get some hassle from the Anfield crowd after missing a few decent chances and being caught out of position as he desperately sought the ball to make something happen.

But ‘Balo’ showed what he was about as the ball fell to him in the box on the 80-minute mark, as he swivelled, kept possession in spite of the defenders being in close proximity and nudged home a smart finish. The confidence boost from finding the net will surely help ‘Super Mario’ who must have had the issue weighing on his mind after the loss to Aston Villa last weekend.

He functions well with Daniel Sturridge

We may have only seen about an hour of Balotelli and Sturridge in the same XI so far, but the duo’s link up play and combination looked effective. The pair started against Spurs as Mario made his debut in a game the Reds won 3-0. Neither striker found the net, but their styles seemed to compliment one another.

With Sturridge’s pace pushing the backline deeper, ‘Balo’s’ tendency to drop and find space in wide or central positions was boosted, giving Tottenham’s rearguard all manner of headaches. Balotelli looked out of sorts against Villa without his partner in crime, and Brendan Rodgers will be desperate to get the two back together when the England international returns to fitness.

He’s a real personality

To be a true star often takes more than just ability. Greats need that ‘x-factor’ or trademark style, and Balotelli looks to have what it takes. The Italian is a personality off of the field thanks to his sometimes sweet, sometimes mad, acts and that character translates into his performances.

The striker can appear aloof at times, but with his skills and abilities he has the tendency to snap into gear in an instant and grab the headlines. If Rodgers can keep him grounded and interested, Balotelli may become a Merseyside hero.

He’s still young

With spells at Inter Milan, Manchester City and AC Milan all under his belt, it’s easy to forget that Balotelli is only 24. The Palermo-born attacker has played for more top clubs in his short career than many stars will get the opportunity to do during their entire playing days, meaning he still has the chance to get things right.

The potential is there, but the keys have been misplaced on a few occasions, with troubles at City particularly noteworthy. Oh yeah, he’s also starred for Italy at a few major tournaments, too.

Brendan Rodgers can get the best from trouble stars

The progress of Sturridge and Raheem Sterling is testament to Rodgers ability to get the best from players with problems. Sturridge arrived at Liverpool from Chelsea with a reputation as a selfish character, while Sterling was rumoured to have off-field distractions threatening his awesome potential. Both players have been grounded by the Northern Irishman, who seems to have turned them into top-class Premier League performers.

Balotelli may be a bigger challenge, but Rodgers has shown that he has the patience and man management skills to get results.

FIVE possible defenders for Manchester United to sign in January

Manchester United brought in some fantastic players during the summer transfer window in the likes of Angel Di Maria, Radamel Falcao and Ander Herrera.

However, they are still lacking defensive satisfaction as demonstrated in their embarrassing 5-3 loss to Leicester City this past weekend.

United may have signed defenders Luke Shaw and Marcos Rojo during the summer, but they haven’t been good enough so far since arriving at the club.

Here is a list of FIVE possible defenders that the Red Devils can buy in January to help solve their defending crisis in no particular order.

[ad_pod id=’ricco’ align=’center’]

Ron Vlaar

The Aston Villa defender has been considered highly by many after his performance at the World Cup with the Netherlands. The 29 year old is in a bit of a rough patch when it comes to his contract at Villa Park as well so he is there for the taking. However, I think he will only be a short term solution if he is bought to the club. In January, Vlaar will be in the final six months in his contract so they might be able to get him for a good price.

Transfer Market Value: £5.72m

[ad_pod id=’ricco’ align=’center’]

Mats Hummels

The German defender had a fantastic summer, winning the World Cup with Germany and earning a new contract with current side Borussia Dortmund, keeping him at the side till the summer of 2017. Still, this has not put United off targeting him for a transfer this past summer but he refused a move to England as he was 100% happy at his current club. At the age of 25, Hummels is the defender United crave due to his size, strength, athleticism and composure on the ball and they’ll hope to convince him to transfer in January. A big transfer fee may be required for this to happen though.

Transfer Market Value: £30.8m

[ad_pod id=’ricco’ align=’center’]

Mateo Musacchio

The 24-year-old defender was linked with a move to Tottenham Hotspur this past summer transfer window. Due to third-party ownership of the Argentine, the move was called off. United could try and go for Musacchio in the January transfer window. Over 32 La Liga appearances last season, Musacchio collected nine clean sheets.

In a recent interview, he said he was happy at his current club Villarreal and is enjoying his football in Spain. United will be hoping to convince him otherwise in order to solve their defending problems.

Transfer Market Value: £8.8m

[ad_pod id=’ricco’ align=’center’]

Diego Godin

Diego Godin had a great season last campaign. He led his side, Atletico Madrid, to a league title as well as the final of the Champions League. During their title winning campaign, the Uruguayan helped his side achieve 19 clean sheets. United have only managed to keep two clean sheets this season and have conceded eight goals, so buying Godin with his characteristics of putting his body on the line in every game would be excellent.

Transfer Market Value: £22m

[ad_pod id=’ricco’ align=’center’]

Nevan Subotic

Buying two defenders that already know how to work with one another would be great for United so if they are able to buy Hummels, they should go for his Borussia Dortmund partner as well, Nevan Subotic. The Serbian only made 10 Bundesliga appearances last season due to a cruciate ligament rupture but now, he has fully recovered. In January, he will have one and a half years left on his current contract, and alongside the fact he was out for the majority of last season, United might be able to barter a good price for his services.

Transfer Market Value: £17.6m

Five key Premier League games over the Christmas period

The Christmas period holds more significance in the season than you might think. It’s a period that is symbolic as a yardstick for where teams will end up. On 11 of the last 22 Boxing day’s the team that has been leading has gone onto win the title. Only two teams, Sunderland last year, and West Brom in 2005, have survived having been bottom on the 25th.

With four games usually in the space of about 12 days, the intensity is normally a test of every respective team’s squad depth and fitness. Infamous myths of foreign players’ incredulity when they learn of the busy schedule- a profound opposite to the Winter Break prevalent across most of Europe- normally has some impact too. New arrivals may well slow down (Alexis Sanchez, for example) as burnout becomes prominent. David Silva and Juan Mata started their City and Chelsea careers well in their first season, but dropped off significantly in the New Year.

Here are the five most influential games to look for over the Christmas period…

QPR v West Brom, Saturday 20th, 15:00

Only two teams have survived having been bottom on the 25th – being dealt the deadly ‘bottom at Christmas’ title usually proves fatal. With QPR and West Brom both precariously perched above that deadly spot, their showdown at Loftus Road next Saturday will be huge.

You may argue it’s bigger for the home team, as their away performances have been diabolical and they’re utterly dependent on picking up points in their own backyard. You’d also fear for Alan Irvine’s job if West Brom’s gradual decline continues; a man of small managerial pedigree before landing this job has meant his critics have been more vociferous.

Southampton v Everton,  Saturday 20th, 15:00

This game will act as more of a yardstick for just how good Southampton are at the moment – they’re blistering form at the start of the season was impressive, but not a fair representation of how good they really are.

Their unlucky defeats to Manchester City, Arsenal and United will have knocked their confidence, and Everton’s bracket of finishing just outside the top 4 every year is where Southampton will be looking to settle. With two managers liking to play possession football, it will probably be a good game, too.

Liverpool v Arsenal, Sunday 21st, 16:00

The Rodgers out brigade have been growing in their flock slowly. A premature Champions League exit will have accentuated that process, and a home defeat to Arsenal might be the beginning of the end.

Arsene Wenger’s vindictive meeting with some truly angered Arsenal fans at a Stoke train station last week was an apt example of how he still divides opinion heavily. This could be a hugely significant game for both, although Rodgers looks more vulnerable given the level of Liverpool’s decline.

It will also be interesting see Alexis Sanchez, the man who Liverpool desperately tried to replace Luis Suarez with.

Tottenham v Manchester United, Sunday 28th, 12:00pm

Before you place any context around a Spurs/United game, it always seems to deliver as a mesmerising fixture. Anecdotes of Ferguson’s basic team talks before these games (‘lad’s its Tottenham’) and scorelines producing more than eight goals make it a banker for television companies.

While United have climbed up the table with six straight victories, that form seems a general miss-representation as to how they’re actually performing. In 16 of the 22 completed Premier League seasons, one of the four teams on Boxing Day have dropped out. Could United squander their chance? Spurs are knocking on the top four door again and would be galvanised by any form of victory in this game. Victory for either would be considered a fantastic result.

Tottenham v Chelsea, January 1st, 17:30

Not the match Jose Mourinho will want at the end of an intense period, but having dropped four points against Newcastle and Sunderland in recent weeks, a strong Christmas is paramount for them to maintain their momentum going into 2015.

This will be Spurs’ second big game of that period, and you’d think defeat in both would leave them in no-mans-land, lost from the top four and with little to aim for. Losses in both would have wider reaching ramifications for Maurcio Pochettino, who’s failed to make the big impact he looked to promise. With Daniel Levy infamously inpatient, Pochettino may find himself on a downward spiral.

Defeat away at Burnley in the FA Cup would make their season a pre-ordained failure just four months before the end of the season. A victory over the London rivals would be huge for him, and keep that top four battle open.

Man United newbie defends manager’s strategies despite setbacks

New Manchester United signing Daley Blind has come out to defend Louis van Gaal’s decisions regarding his strategies and formation in the build up to matches, Daily Star reports.

The manager was on the receiving end of chants from the supporters urging him to change is usual 3-5-2 formation into the usual 4-4-2, a move which seemed to work after the alterations resulted in United scoring two goals against Queens Park Rangers.

In the post match interview following the QPR game, Van Gaal admitted that he didn’t care what the supporters wanted as he is doing what he thinks is right in regards to improving the team as a whole.

Blind, who shares a close relationship with the Dutch manager after having worked together during their time in the Netherlands national team, has come out to say that his manager is actually improving the squad with his methods.

He said: “He is very honest and direct in what he wants. That is a good thing.

“He makes players better and he makes teams better.

“You have to make decisions in a game and it is not always easy to make the right ones.

“We all understand what he wants. If you have played another system for a long time you have to get used to a new one, but that isn’t a problem.

“There are games we are doing it very well, but games when we can do it better. We are improving.

“It doesn’t happen overnight. You can’t always switch something in a day.

“It can take longer, but I feel we are improving every week and every game.”

The Red Devils are currently sitting in fourth in the league with 12 points separating them from first place Chelsea and is still continuing their battle to finish with a spot in Europe.

Have Burnley found the missing piece of their jigsaw?

Burnley pulled off one of the shocks of the season over the weekend managing to beat current Premier League champions Manchester City. The 1-0 win has greatly helped their survival push leaving them just one point below Sunderland who are currently in 17th.

In an added bonus for the Clarets last year’s in-form striker Sam Vokes made his first Premier League start for the club after being out with injury since the start of the season. Vokes was one half of the strike partnership with Danny Ings that fired Burnley into the Premier League last season, so will his return be the missing jigsaw piece that they need to avoid relegation?

Burnley’s player of the year last year scored 20 goals in 39 appearances in the Championship while also racking up a number of assists for strike partner Ings. In March 2014, he was diagnosed with a rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee which prevented him from playing the remainder of last season, and most of the Premier League season this year.

His return, even if it was only short, against Manchester City could mean Burnley have the power to finish this campaign on a high. Vokes was an extremely influential team member last season and I am sure his return will have spurred the rest of the squad on.

[ad_pod id=’football-friends’ align=’center’]

It will be nice to finally be reminded of the pairing that was so important in Burnley’s promotion and to see it in English football’s highest division. Last season the pair ran circles around many teams causing chaos and confusion in many a back four.

I reckon the fantastic team performance against Manchester City could be the turning point for Burnley and just what the team need in order to survive relegation. They have a tough set of fixtures left with Southampton, Tottenham, Arsenal and Everton in their next four games so there is no doubt that the challenge is a difficult one.

But it is not all doom and gloom. They still have fellow strugglers Leicester, Hull and Aston Villa to play and it’s these matches that will be the real ‘six pointers’.

Many neutral fans have grown to love Burnley and what they have brought to the Premier League this season. They have been refreshing, offering something different, and many teams could learn from how they go about things both on and off the pitch.

They have been a team which has been there to play football and Sam Vokes certainly knows how to do that. If Ings and Vokes can get their partnership back on track pretty sharpish then they could shock a few teams who think they have got Burnley sussed.

While they may know how to play the Burnley of the Premier League they don’t know how to play against their deadly partnership of last season. I strongly suspect that Burnley have not finished with the upsets yet and my prediction is that Tottenham – especially with their current form – could be the next team to be surprised by Burnley.

You heard it here first!

Three reasons why Arsenal’s £12million ace deserves to be the main man

Want to know how quickly you can go from hero to villain in football? Just ask Olivier Giroud. The big French striker was the man in form for the Gunners prior to the AS Monaco game on Wednesday. However, the Champions League clash was far from the forward’s finest game, with Giroud being guilty of missing several clearcut chances.

Arsene Wenger eventually hauled off the former Montpellier ace around the hour-mark as the boos echoed around the Emirates stadium. Due to that, there was genuine debate as to whether Giroud would be in the starting line-up to face Everton.

Le Professeur remained faithful to his striker and he was repaid with the French international scoring a few minutes before half-time to ease the tensions that were still around following the midweek embarrassment.

Can Giroud carry the mantle for Arsenal in front of goal? Of course he can! And here is why!

50 Arsenal goals

The Frenchman bagged his 50th Arsenal goal in the recent 2-1 victory over Crystal Palace in the Premier League. Giroud has reached the milestone quicker than Didier Drogba managed for Chelsea, Wayne Rooney for Manchester United and Robin van Persie for the Gunners.

That is quite the calibre of player to be ahead of and having bagged his 51st goal for the north London side against Everton today, the former Montpellier ace doesn’t look like slowing down anytime soon.

Can score all sorts of goals

The first time you see Giroud, you assume he is a good old-fashioned centre-forward with an aerial presence and the ability to rough up the opposition defenders; he does offer that but he is also capable of so much more.

The French international’s consolation strike in the 2-1 defeat against Manchester United earlier in the season deserved to win any game. The quick thinking and exquisite finish to kill off Middlesbrough in the FA Cup Fifth Round tie was something you’d have only thought possible from someone like Santi Cazorla or Mesut Ozil.

Best option for Arsenal

Despite pointless rumours, Arsenal are never going to go out and sign someone like Edinson Cavani – at least why Arsene Wenger is still running things at the Emirates.

The Gunners do have a lot of attacking options but no one who can carry the goalscoring mantle – even Alexis Sanchez’s explosive start to life in north London has stalled. Theo Walcott is still not up to full fitness, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain doesn’t score enough, Danny Welbeck will never be more than a 10-goals-a-season striker whilst Aaron Ramsey’s goalscoring exploits of last season appear to be a positive blip in form rather than a mainstay.

Giroud remains Arsenal’s best bet at a 30-goals-a-season striker.

Twitter reacts to huge blow for Everton

Everton’s European campaign continues as they visit the Liberty Stadium for their Premier League clash with Swansea City. However, Roberto Martinez’s side will have to do it without their powerful talisman Romelu Lukaku leading the line.

The Belgium international hasn’t made the matchday 18, and, although the official line is an injury, the cynical ones out there will be suggesting it has to Lukaku’s new agent recently saying that if he had met the striker sooner, he wouldn’t have moved to Everton from Chelsea.

Whatever the narrative is behind the former Anderlecht powerhouse’s absence is, there’s no denying that the Toffees will miss the big man up top; he has eighteen goals and six assists from 39 appearances across all competitions this season.

Arouna Kone has been tasked with filling his team-mates boots – David James suggest during the pre-match chat that the former Wigan Athletic man was a better option than Romelu(!) – but what do the Everton fans make of Lukaku’s absence and Kone’s starting spot?

Five bargain signings to follow Milner to Liverpool

In what will likely prove to be one of the most astute acquisitions of the summer 2015 transfer window, news broke this morning of Liverpool agreeing a deal with Manchester City star James Milner – as reported by BBC Sport.

Now set to swap the Etihad Stadium for Anfield by way of a free transfer, the 29 year-old is an absolute bargain; he’s home-grown, an impeccable athlete, highly versatile, a consummate professional, creative yet industrious and hugely experienced, with 389 Premier League appearances and 53 caps for England under his belt already.

But why should Liverpool stop there? The likes of Manchester United, City and Chelsea may be planning incredibly lucrative summers but there’s plenty of value-for-money on the transfer market that the Merseysiders would be wise to take advantage of.

So with that in mind, and in honour of Hamez Milner signing on the dotted line, here’s FIVE bargain buys that will hopefully follow Liverpool’s latest acquisition to Merseyside…

[interaction id=“none”]

DANNY INGS

Liverpool’s intentions to follow James Milner with another bosman signing in Burnley striker Danny Ings are no great secret – having attempted to whisk away the 22 year-old in January and loan him back to the Clarets for the remainder of the campaign.

The England U21 bagged eleven goals and four assists in 35 appearances this season – a phenomenal return for such a young forward in a debut Premier League campaign, spearheading a side who finished second-bottom in the table.

Ings is fluid, creative and mobile, also capable of playing at No.10. But what stands out most is his intelligence and guile for a talent of such limited experience at the top end of the game.

With his Turf Moor contract coming to an end, Liverpool can sign the former Bournemouth prodigy by way of a £5million compensation agreement this summer.

But in an effort to demonstrate their determined interest in Ings, Tottenham launched a successful £12million bid last month – which could have an effect on the striker’s fee.

Fabian Schar

Despite drafting in the likes of Dejan Lovren, Mamadou Sakho and Kolo Toure for rather lucrative amounts since taking the Anfield helm in 2012, Brendan Rodgers still lacks an obvious choice of partner to Martin Skrtel at centre-half – whilst reports this morning suggest the experienced Slovakian could ditch Merseyside in the coming transfer window.

Another option at the heart of defence certainly wouldn’t go amiss this summer and although he might not quite be at the level Liverpool are looking for just yet, FC Basel’s Fabian Schar represents fantastic value for money.

Statistically speaking, the 23 year-old was the best centre-back in the Champions League last season, averaging an imperious 3.3 tackles, 4 interceptions, 6.7 clearances and 1.8 successful aerial duels per match.

And in addition to his defensive qualities, the Swiss international is famed for his front-footed style, comparable to Tottenham’s Jan Vertonghen and certainly maintaining Liverpool’s attacking philosophy.

Basel recently activated a one-year extension clause in the 23 year-old’s contract, but set to expire in 2016, he’s still expected to move on this summer after claiming three consecutive Swiss Super League titles.

He’ll likely be available for around the £10million mark – but Arsenal, Tottenham and West Ham are all keen on Schar.

KARIM BELLARABI

With Raheem Sterling’s contract saga still awaiting resolution, the Reds could find themselves on the hunt for a replacement winger this summer.

And although Bayer Leverkusen’s Karim Bellarabi may not be a household name just yet here in England, his £11million release clause represents a punt well worth taking from the Anfield outfit’s perspective.

The 25 year-old has just come to the end of a real breakthrough campaign, bagging twelve goals and six assists in 33 Bundesliga outings.

In the process, he’s averaged 4.7 successful dribbles per match – a return bettered throughout Europe’s five leading top flights by only Chelsea winger Eden Hazard – and recorded the fastest goal in Bundesliga history, just nine seconds into the opening game of the season against Dortmund.

A particularly speedy and explosive winger, the German international could further blossom playing in a Liverpool system that relentlessly beckons fast-paced counter-attacks.

Whether he’d be prepared to quit Leverkusen for a club without Champions League football, however, remains to be seen.

SAMI KHEDIRA

Although James Milner represents a fantastic bit of business on Liverpool’s part, he alone won’t be able to fill the void of MLS-bound skipper Steven Gerrard.

Another stellar addition to the engine room is required – at which point, I turn your attentions to Real Madrid’s Sami Khedira.

He’s widely regarded as one of the top midfield enforcers in world football, affirming such status last summer by lifting the 2014 Champions League title and the World Cup in just a matter of months.

The German international boasts an incredible box-to-box engine, sensational strength and is nothing short of monolithic in the air, but that combination hasn’t proved enough to earn a new contract at the Bernabeu, with his current deal set to expire at the end of the campaign.

At 28 years of age, Khedira is still enjoying his peak years – although niggling injuries have continually plagued him over the last two campaigns.

He’s already confirmed he’ll be leaving the Spanish capital on a free transfer this summer – but speculation thus far suggests he’s heading to Juventus.

ASMIR BEGOVIC

Despite a considerably improved level of performance over the last few months, Liverpool seem unlikely to claim Champions League football next season with Simon Mignolet as their default No.1.

And in terms of age, quality, proven Premier League pedigree, experience and price, (barring the likely out of reach Petr Cech) no goalkeeper on the market this summer strikes better value for money than Stoke City’s Asmir Begovic.

The 27 year-old has demonstrated a remarkable consistency as the Potters’ No.1 over the last five campaigns, in that time claiming the club’s Young Player of the Year, Players’ Player of the Year (twice), Supporters’ Club Player of the Year and Player of the Year awards – so there’s no doubting how he’s highly rated at the Britannia.

And with just one year remaining on his current deal, it’s looking increasingly likely Stoke will be forced to cash in on the Bosnian international this summer. Rather tellingly, Mark Hughes dropped him for the last three fixtures of the season in favour of prodigious understudy Jack Butland – suggesting the Welsh gaffer is already preparing for life without the 6 foot 6 shot-stopper.

According to recent reports, Stoke could sell for just £8million – but Begovic has also emerged as a potential replacement for Manchester United’s Real Madrid-bound No.1 David De Gea.
