Robbie Gotts should’ve gone out on loan to Huddersfield

Leeds United are reportedly finally set to sanction a loan move for Robbie Gotts.

The midfielder did not move on during deadline day with EFL and Premier League clubs having until October 16th to conclude any domestic deals, but it finally seems as though the youngster has gotten the green light to move on a temporary basis.

Alan Nixon believes that Swindon are the club hoping to land the midfielder, and while this would be a decent opportunity for Gotts to get a taste of senior football, Leeds have made a mistake here.

Huddersfield Town were strongly linked with a move for Gotts earlier in the window, but for some reason, Leeds wouldn’t sanction the move.

Now, it seems as though he’s headed for Swindon, or potentially another League One club in Sunderland who are also keen. But we can’t help but feel that Huddersfield would have been the perfect destination for him.

Not only would he be playing at a higher level in the Championship, but he’d be working under a manager who knows exactly how to get the best out of him with Carlos Corberan having plenty of experience working with Gotts during his tenure as United’s U23s manager.

It was a fruitful partnership as well, with the Whites’ youth outfit picking up the PDL National Title in 2019.

Away from that, Corberan’s relationship with Marcelo Bielsa would have been ideal for if the Leeds manager wanted to keep tabs on his player, with the Argentine already being spotted at a Huddersfield game this season.

We can only hope that if Swindon land Gotts he shines down there alongside fellow United-loanee Jordan Stevens, but it would’ve been interesting to see the midfielder reunite with his former U23s boss.

Newcastle surely regretting selling Ivan Toney for just £650k

After watching the club splash out around £40m to sign Joelinton last summer, Newcastle fans may be enviously looking at a player Championship side Brentford picked up for about a quarter of the price back in August.

Ivan Toney was on the books at St James’ Park for a number of years, but played just the four games for the senior side, with the last of those appearances coming back in the 2015/2016 season when he played twice in both the Premier League and League Cup respectively.

The 24-year-old spent the next few seasons out on loan, before really making his mark at Peterborough in 2018. The Posh snapped him up for a mere £650k, where he scored an impressed 49 goals in just 94 games, including setting up another 15 too.

That form saw him earn a £10m move to Brentford earlier this summer, and it’s fair to say the striker has hit the ground running at his new home, bagging three goals in four matches in the Championship.

The Magpies of course spent big on a striker themselves in bringing Callum Wilson from Bournemouth, and the England international’s arrival is surely an indication of how much Joelinton struggled in his debut campaign – the former Hoffenheim man netted just four times in over 40 games for the club.

Had Newcastle shown a bit more patience with Toney, and shown the kind of trust that Peterborough ended up affording him, then they may not have felt the need to go out and buy a new centre-forward.

Whilst Rafa Benitez did a fantastic job in getting the Magpies back into the Premier League and is still fondly remembered by the Toon Army, letting Toney go a bit too hastily and without giving him a proper chance is one of his rare mistakes.

Leeds boss Marcelo Bielsa has to give Cody Drameh a chance in the Premier League

After finally getting their man earlier in the summer, Leeds United have opted to take the patient approach with Cody Drameh.

The 19-year-old arrived from Championship side Fulham, and has spent his time in Yorkshire with the U23s, where he’s only missed one game at Premier League 2 level.

He’s yet to be seen with the senior side however, and that’s something Marcelo Bielsa may look to change heading into 2020.

According to The Athletic’s Phil Hay, when Leeds scouted Drameh whilst he was at Craven Cottage, they saw shades of Luke Ayling in him. It was also suggested that the teenager saw a “clearer” route to the senior set-up at Elland Road than he did at Fulham.

Hay wrote: “Leeds are understood to have paid in the region of £300,000 for Drameh, a fee which could rise to £1 million with add-ons, last week.

“Fulham are fresh from promotion themselves and will play in the Premier League with Leeds this season but sources close to Drameh say the England Under-18 international saw a clearer first-team pathway in West Yorkshire than in west London. The deal was done despite Fulham’s reluctance to sell and after Manchester City showed some late interest.”

Drameh’s potential is there for all to see, with Eredivisie scout Xander Wilkinson going on record to hail his abilities. He said: “Defensively so impressive! His mind works quicker than most right backs I’ve seen in a naturally defensive mindset. Tactically very aware of what is being asked of him, times his engagements well, needs to add a little more unpredictability going forward.”

The starlet may not be ready to start in the Premier League right now, but he could learn a lot by potentially being given opportunities in the FA Cup and then some minutes here and there in the top-flight.

Exposing him to first-team football will be the real test of whether Drameh will sink or swim, and the young right-back could surprise everybody and take to it like a duck to water. Only time will tell.

Everton news: Ancelotti to sacrifice Bolasie and Besic to land Watford’s Doucoure

Everton have been in contact with Watford over a potential transfer for their midfield star Abdoulaye Doucoure for quite some time now. However, even though the Hornets would be open to selling their man, it won’t exactly be a cheap operation.

Now, according to 90min, Carlo Ancelotti is considering throwing two fringe players into the mix as potential makeweights to bring the proposed figure of £30m down a little bit.

The two players in question, as the same source reveals, are Yannick Bolasie and Muhamed Besic. Of course, neither of them have a big role in the team anyway so it makes sense to let them go.

Bolasie has spent time on loan at Aston Villa, Anderlecht and also Sporting CP while Besic himself played at Middlesbrough and Sheffield United. Losing them both should not really be a big hit for the Toffees’ squad but could potentially help them out in this deal.

As of right now, 90min don’t say anything about Watford’s stance on getting two players and some cash in return for their player but Ancelotti is hoping this could indeed help get the deal over the line in the immediate future.

Just like everyone else in the current climate, Everton are working on a mostly reduced budget so meeting Doucoure’s asking price is a tough pill to swallow.

But Watford should be aware of that as well and it remains to be seen whether they agree to the proposed terms.

Verdict

On the face of it, it does seem like sacrificing Bolasie and Besic for Doucoure is a good deal for Everton. Ancelotti obviously doesn’t have them in his plans for the upcoming 2020/21 Premier League campaign so the transfer does make sense.

However, we still don’t know if Watford feel the same way so we’ll have to wait and see what they say.

Sunderland: Stephen Wearne signed for Black Cats’ under-23 squad

Sunderland have further added to the club’s under-23 side with the signing of Stephen Wearne, once of Middlesbrough.

The 2019/20 campaign saw the Black Cats’ academy have a disastrous run of form in the league with both the under-18 and under-23 outfits failing to gain a single victory in their respective divisions.

Following such poor performances, Paul Reid left his role as academy manager, prompting speculation that the club’s Tier 1 academy status could be under threat.

A plethora of players have since left the academy setup but they have since been replaced by a number of new faces.

The changes at under-23 level saw three new faces arrive last month to bolster Elliot Dickman’s squad, with Sam Wilding, Bobby Beaumont and Vinnie Steels coming in, whilst Kenton Richardson also signed.

Joining the aforementioned four players was Burnley striker Will Harris, and they have now been supplemented by the addition of attacking midfielder Wearne.

The 19-year-old has put pen to paper on a one-year deal on Wearside after leaving ‘Boro earlier this summer, where he made 60 appearances for the Championship club at youth level.

Wearne is a good addition for Elliot Dickman, especially given that he contributed to 20 goals in those 60 games for Boro, with 10 goals and 10 assists.

The under-23 side have no excuse but to improve given that several new players have arrived and it will be interesting to see how they develop over the next few weeks and beyond.

Kasper Schmeichel should be an immediate fan favourite at Man Utd

You wouldn’t believe it if someone told you a couple of years ago, but Manchester United are apparently looking for someone to replace David De Gea.

The Spaniard has been out of form for some time now, and it seems as though the hierarchy at Old Trafford have lost faith in the former Golden Glove winner, and they already have a replacement in their sights.

What’s the story then?

Surprisingly, United aren’t going to look towards Dean Henderson to solve their goalkeeping problems after his impressive season at Sheffield United.

Instead, the Red Devils are reportedly after Leicester City stopper Kasper Schmeichel, and it’s hard to say that this wouldn’t be a great move.

Immediate hero

Aside from the fact that Schmeichel is a Premier League-winning goalkeeper who is certainly good enough to play for a top side, this deal, in particular, makes so much sense for Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side.

Nostalgia is a great factor in how fans view things, and United fans could very easily feel as though they’re back to their glory days if they have a blonde Scandinavian named Schmeichel between the sticks.

Fans should immediately have a lot of respect for their new man due to his dad’s achievements at the club, and with confidence being such a huge factor for a goalie, that support could help the Dane match or even surpass his father’s performances for the Red Devils.

Of course, there will be the worry of constant comparisons getting in his head, but that’s something he’s inevitably had to contend with during his entire career, and he’s coped very well so far.

The Old Trafford faithful would love Schmeichel before he even made his debut, and that could be a massive positive that comes alongside bringing him in.

Sunderland: Rotherham manager Paul Warne reveals update on Black Cats transfer target Jerry Yates

Rotherham United manager Paul Warne has revealed that the club have received just one offer for striker Jerry Yates.

With the League One season coming to an abrupt end, Sunderland manager Phil Parkinson will be looking to bring in some new faces after failing to gain promotion to England’s second tier.

The Black Cats had been cited with interest in former Swindon Town striker Yates and various other clubs have also emerged in the race to sign the 23-year-old, with Blackpool the only club to table a bid for him.

Yates netted 13 goals in 31 games on loan with the Robins in League Two during the 2019/20 season before returning to parent club Rotherham, whose manager Warne revealed that, despite growing interest, only one club has made an offer for the striker.

“There has been no bid from Swindon to my knowledge as we speak on Tuesday morning. I’m aware only that Blackpool have put an official bid in. There might have been a few phone calls here and there (from other clubs), but they’re the only ones to put an official bid in.

“If they reach the technical board’s valuation, then Jerry will be gone, so to speak. In the meantime, he is training with us and training really well. Because of the type of people we are, we will continue to train him as if he’s staying here.

“I’m well aware of the fact there are a lot of clubs interested in him and we’ll see how that progresses. At the moment, the bid hasn’t reached our valuation so he stays with us.”

As per The Gazette, Yates’ contract at Rotherham expired at the end of June but the club activated a one-year extension which has now allowed them to potentially cash in on the £90,000-valued striker.

It seems that Sunderland’s chances of signing Yates are slim, given that Blackpool have apparently stolen a march by submitting an offer for him.

The Black Cats have done little to improve their squad as of yet and it remains to be seen if Parkinson has the funds to bring in the players that he may want this summer.

Manchester United: Jadon Sancho moves closer to Old Trafford transfer

Borussia Dortmund star Jadon Sancho has been linked with a move to the Premier League and Manchester United are the clear front-runners to sign him this summer.Â

Sancho has been tipped to return to England and the Red Devils are reportedly leading the race to make him a record signing. According to journalists Fabrizio Romano and Sam Pilger, the 20-year-old is moving closer to joining Man United.

Dortmund are willing to cash in on the club’s top scorer and the winger wants the move as well. All that is left is for the two clubs to reach an agreement over a fee with which they are both happy.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer believes that Sancho is the missing piece in the puzzle in order for his team to challenge for silverware once again.

Solskjaer knows he has a problem on the right flank, as Daniel James has struggled for consistency. Sancho could be a total game-changer, as the 20-year-old has scored 20 goals and created 18 assists in 46 games in all competitions this season.

While United haven’t necessarily struggled at the top of the pitch, as Anthony Martial, Marcus Rashford and Mason Greenwood have been in prolific form since the Premier League restarted last month, there is no doubt that the Borussia Dortmund winger could make a massive difference.

The Red Devils are ready to hand him the number seven shirt worn by the likes of Eric Cantona, David Beckham and Cristiano Ronaldo during their time at Old Trafford.

Although these are big boots to fill, he should be more than up for the challenge, as he has already established himself as a regular England international.

Sheffield United: Lys Mousset confident he will be staying at the club

There seems to be a big update on the future of a forward at Sheffield United following the latest reports and this news could be a big positive for the club.

Acccording to The Sheffield Star, French forward Lys Mousset, who signed last summer for the Blades from AFC Bournemouth, is confident he will be staying at Bramall Lane past the transfer window.

He is so confident that he has even told friends and family that he expects to remain in South Yorkshire.

This should definitely go down as some positive news at the club, and this is due to a couple of reasons. One being the fact that his performances last season were a big factor as to why the Blades achieved a top-half finish as he has scored six goals and supplied four assists in the Premier League, per WhoScored.

This tally was the joint-most goals in the division in the Blades’ squad, and he also had the joint-most assists (per WhoScored), so he has certainly been a great attacking threat for the club since signing from Bournemouth last summer.

Mousset also boasts a great statistic which sees him rank first when it comes to goals scored as a substitute in the Premier League last season.

All this highlights the importance of the forward for the club, either in the starting eleven or off of the bench, and if he is happy to stay as well, then it is good as it means that the Blades have some good quality in depth up front.

Newcastle are being seduced by the song of a siren with the Saudi regime

New ownership is often celebrated in football.

A wealthy benefactor – and they do always have to be wealthy – comes along and prepares to stick his or her hand in his or her pocket and splash the cash. Fans dream of new signings, of multi-million-pound spending sprees, of rising up the league table; everything else sort of falls by the wayside.

This has happened at Newcastle United.

Of course, they have been here before. There have been multiple false dawns under the tumultuous reign of Mike Ashley but, finally, at long last, it appears as though he will finally be out of their club.

This is not an article to rag on Ashley; plenty have done that and Newcastle fans probably don’t want to read about the catalogue of failures that have plagued his reign. As a neutral, though, one has to say that the appointment of Joe Kinnear as a Director of Football stands alone; at his first press conference, he called a journalist a rude word and, quite amazingly, it only got worse from there.

Yet questions need to be asked.

The Saudi Private Wealth Fund has an enormous amount of financial clout. They have an immense amount of money and one can perhaps understand, at face level, why fans are so excited. They want their club to spend and they want to see the club back where they are seen to belong – among the top six, challenging for the league title, returning to the Champions League for the first time since the management of the late, great Sir Bobby Robson.

There is a desire for them to splash the cash and bring in star signings – a summer spend of over £150m would go a long way to convincing the fans that a new era is dawning, that a blood-stained sun is rising.

That blood needs noting, too. The Saudi regime, to quote The Independent, executed 185 people last year. That works out as an execution almost every two days. One day saw 37 people killed. The numbers include young men who were children when they were found guilty.

Per USA Today, being gay in Saudi Arabia is a capital offence that can lead to death, while it is also punishable by prison time or by flogging.

There is, of course, likely to be false equivalency bandied around here. What about Manchester City? What about Sheffield United? Both are victims of the Saudi sportwashing regime that has also claimed WWE and multiple heavyweight boxing promoters.

Newcastle are just the latest example and climbing into bed with the Saudis is akin to seduction by siren song.

Walter Copland Perry, the scholar, once wrote that the song of a siren “though irresistibly sweet, was no less sad than sweet, and lapped both body and soul in a fatal lethargy, the forerunner of death and corruption.”

That is applicable to Newcastle, only that the death and corruption has been a predecessor, and that everyone in St James’ Park is aware of it.

Mike Ashley was and is a genuinely awful owner, perhaps the very worst in the Premier League, but sometimes, perhaps it is better the devil you know.

Ashley, after all, has treated fans like customers, built an empire on the ‘stock it high, sell it low’ mantra, and turned St James’ Park, that famous old ground, into an advertising board.

The Saudis, though, have literal blood on their hands. This is no false equivalency, purely the facts.

Newcastle fans would do well to remember that.
