Roach to join Worcestershire

Kemar Roach has become the latest West Indian signing in country cricket and will be joining Worcestershire for the remainder of the season

ESPNcricinfo staff11-Aug-2011Kemar Roach has become the latest West Indian signing in county cricket and will be joining Worcestershire for the remainder of the season as they scrap to stay in Division One of the County Championship. Roach will replace Worcestershire’s current overseas international Saeed Ajmal, who is returning to his national side earlier than scheduled next week, to participate in a training camp prior to embarking on Pakistan’s tour of Zimbabwe.”I am delighted to sign for Worcestershire and to be able to play county cricket for the first time,” said Roach. “Growing up in Barbados, every young cricketer aspired to play for the West Indies and to play county cricket. Many of my heroes like Lara, Walsh and Ambrose spent time in the county game and I view it as a huge challenge.”Even though I am only going to be joining for a short period, I believe this stint gives me the chance to make an impact on the club and on county cricket and hopefully be the start of a long relationship with Worcestershire.”Roach joins Worcestershire on the back of international duty in the Caribbean, having opened the bowling against India and Pakistan earlier this year. In his fledgling career, Roach has taken 40 Test wickets at an average of 29.90, and has a total of 87 first-class wickets in 31 matches.”To have one of the fastest bowlers in the world in our team for the last few games of the season can only be a huge plus factor,” said Worcestershire’s director of cricket, Steve Rhodes. “Albeit a short stint, I know that Kemar is determined to make an impact on the county scene.”Ajmal, who arrived at New Road in June, has claimed 36 wickets for the county across all forms of cricket. He leaves as their highest wicket taker in the Clydesdale Bank 40 this season, having taken 11 wickets. His most notable performance came in the recent match against Derbyshire, where he picked up 4 for 24.”We’ve enjoyed Saeed’s involvement with the team and he’s been a model professional both on and off the field,” said Rhodes. “We’d like to thank Saeed for the time he has spent with us, and also for his help in guiding and inspiring some of our younger bowlers. Obviously we were disappointed that he’s had to leave us early but in the hectic international schedule we recognise that international cricket comes first.”

Bangladesh confirm bookie approach

Shakib Al Hasan and Tamim Iqbal were approached by bookmakers during a home series against India in January 2010, the BCB has confirmed

Sriram Veera01-Sep-2010Shakib Al Hasan and Tamim Iqbal were approached by bookmakers ahead of an ODI series against Ireland in 2008, the Bangladesh Cricket Board has confirmed. The incidents were immediately reported to the ICC’s Anti-Corruption and Security Unit, BCB media committee chairman Jalal Yunus told Cricinfo.During the recent tour of England, Shakib told reporters he’d been approached by a bookmaker in Dhaka. “I took the phone, and the way he spoke, he never exactly told me he wanted me to fix a match, he just told me he wanted to be my sponsor or something like that,” Shakib said then. “The way he was talking, I thought he might do something, so I told someone.”This development, and the spot-fixing controversy in England, have prompted the BCB to organise an “awareness program” for its national players on dealing with bookmakers and fixers. The board has also asked its top cricketers to furnish full details about their individual agents. “The players all have individual agents over whom we have no control,” Yunus told Cricinfo. “So we have asked them for information so that we can check their background and be more aware of the forces influencing our players.”The relatively low salary structure in some cricketing nations is seen as one factor that could encourage match-fixing. Yunus, though, said he was confident that this wouldn’t influence cricketers in Bangladesh, who earn far less than their counterparts in India or Australia. “It depends of course on the individual. As far as we know, every player is honest, sincere and committed to cricket. They know that it will tarnish the country’s reputation. Indian cricket is very rich and we can’t match their salaries but in our context – in our cost of living here in Bangladesh – what the boys get is not bad. I am not saying they are rich but they are pretty well-off.”

Homenageado pelo Flamengo, Arão 'entrega o ouro' contra o Vitória

MatériaMais Notícias

O volante Willian Arão viveu momentos bem distintos neste domingo.

Leicester made a mistake over Ayoze Perez

Leicester City’s recruitment over the last few years has been outstanding, allowing them to continually punch above their weight, but they haven’t always got things right.

In the past, the likes of Harry Maguire, N’Golo Kante and Riyad Mahrez have joined the Midlands outfit for minimal fees before going on to enjoy great success at the King Power Stadium and moving elsewhere for astronomical sums.

It’s led to Leicester winning the Premier League, FA Cup and Community Shield since 2016, magnificent achievements that would not have been possible without exceptional work in the transfer market.

However, not all purchases have been quite so successful. One such example is Ayoze Perez after the versatile forward arrived from Newcastle United via a £30 million deal back in 2019.

The Spaniard had impressed in a sub-standard Magpies side under the tutelage of Rafael Benitez, leading to Leicester’s director of football Jon Rudkin sanctioning a big-money move.

Since joining the Foxes, though, Perez has struggled to produce his best form on a consistent basis, bagging just 12 goals and providing only six assists in 80 appearances for Brendan Rodgers’ charges.

To make matters worse, the 28-year-old picked up his first career red card for a horrific challenge during the club’s 4-1 defeat at the hands of West Ham United in the opening weeks of the new campaign, leading to a three-game suspension.

Perez’s underwhelming displays in a Leicester shirt have seen his market value drop to just £16.2m, almost half the fee that the club’s hierarchy paid for him just two years ago.

Therefore, the purchase of Perez is perhaps one of Rudkin’s few transfer nightmares since taking the reigns as one of Leicester’s chiefs, although the positives certainly outweigh the negatives during his time at the helm.

Nuno must unleash Kane for first time

Spurs return to action later this evening as they look to salvage their quest for glory in Europe this season.

Nuno Santo’s side need a victory against Primeira Liga outfit Pacos de Ferreira at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium if they are to qualify for the group stages of UEFA’s new competition, the Europa Conference League.

The Lilywhites have got off to the most perfect start in the Premier League, recording back-to-back wins having defeated defending champions Manchester City and Wolverhampton Wanderers but fell to defeat in the first leg of this encounter last week.

It means Spurs must overturn a one-goal deficit or risk missing out on a major European competition for the first time in over a decade.

And their chances of advancing would be aided if Nuno opts for a stronger starting XI than we saw in Porto seven days ago. It was a relatively young lineup and one full of those needing game time on the pitch.

For example, 17-year-old gem Dane Scarlett led the line instead of Spurs’ usual frontline options, whilst Bryan Gil, Pierluigi Gollini and Cristian Romero all made their full debuts.

One player that should be given a start is Harry Kane, who this week confirmed his intentions to remain at the club this summer amid interest in his signature from City.

He made his return to the pitch at Molineux on Sunday, replacing Heung-min Son in the 72nd minute for his first appearance of the season but it’s time for Nuno to unleash him from the off for the very first time since taking over.

The £108m-rated talisman is undoubtedly Spurs’ biggest source of goals and that’s what will be required against Pacos, considering the side failed to find the net last week.

Kane directly contributed towards 54.4% of all of their league goals last season, whilst he’s hit 19 or more in every season since 2014/15.

The England skipper, who has been capped 61 times, has been lauded as a “monster” by his teammate Son in the past, whilst City boss Pep Guardiola described him as “exceptional” and “extraordinary” when asked about his interest in signing the striker.

It could be a game-changing decision to start Kane tonight. He’s a level above Pacos de Ferreira and his presence should ultimately see Spurs into the group stages.

Wolves given transfer news on Barcelona’s Moriba

An update has emerged on Wolves central midfield target Ilaix Moriba, regarding how much money Barcelona want for his services this month.

What’s the talk?

According to Spanish outlet ARA, via Molineux News, Barcelona are demanding £12.8m (€15m) for Wolves target Ilaix Moriba this month. The Spanish giants are yet to receive an acceptable offer for the youngster and have now outlined their valuation of his talents.

Wanderers are one of a number of Premier League clubs reportedly interested in signing the teenage midfielder, who is out of contract next summer and seeking an exit from the Camp Nou.

Bargain

Bruno Lage must sanction a £12.8m deal for Moriba this month as it could represent a bargain for the club in the long run. The beast only turned 18 in January and has already made strides in the Barcelona first-team, suggesting that he has the potential to play at the very top level.

He has experience of playing in La Liga and the Champions League with Barcelona, having made 15 appearances for the first-team last season. The Spanish youth international has also been tipped by his former coach to progress further.

Speaking about Moriba and Konrad de la Fuente last year, Former Barcelona B manager Garcia Pimienta said that the pair have an incredible future in the game. He said: “Both Ilaix and Konrad have been decisive. Ilaix has a lot of merit because he is a first-year youth, but Konrad is third, and in such an important match they have shown that they have an incredible future.”

This suggests that the 18-year-old has the potential to continue growing and developing as a player, which is why this £12.8m deal could end up being a bargain for Wolves. If they are able to bring him in and help him become a player capable of playing for a title-winning side regularly competing in the Champions League – as he has shown glimpes of at Barcelona – then they could either make a sizeable profit on him or have a fantastic player in their side.

Wolves have spent more money on 11 different players since 2017, which suggests that £12.8m would not be a massive loss for the club should the experiment fail. This is why Lage must take the gamble and sign Moriba, as it could end up being a snip at that price if he is able to live up to expectations in years to come.

AND in other news, Lage must avoid first Wolves howler over £77k-p/w “monster”, fans would be livid…

Sky Sports journo drops Levy verdict amid Kane saga

Sky Sports journalist Michael Bridge has defended Tottenham Hotspur chairman Daniel Levy over his refusal to sell Harry Kane to Manchester City.

The Spurs striker has been linked with City throughout the summer transfer window but a deal appears no closer to completion, with Kane coming on as a second-half substitute in Sunday’s 1-0 win over Wolves.

Reports have suggested that Levy is keen to receive in excess of £150m if he is to allow the England captain to leave the club.

It is not clear if City will make such a bid but their offers so far are said to have fallen short of that valuation.

Bridge has subsequently hit out at critics of Levy, who believe that he is standing in Kane’s way as he attempts to get his move.

The Sky journalist believes that Levy is well within his rights to demand the best possible deal for the football club.

He said: “I’ve been a critic of Levy in the past but I think they’re pretty rank, to be honest. He has every right to keep hold of his main asset if he doesn’t deem these values worthy enough.”

City ran riot at the weekend, with Gabriel Jesus up front, as they beat Norwich City 5-0 at the Etihad Stadium.
