Bamford reacts to criticism from Leeds fan

Patrick Bamford has revealed that he has learned to ignore some of the criticism he has faced from Leeds United fans this season, in an interview with iNews.

What did he say?

The former Middlesbrough man has come in for some tough criticism from fans and pundits this season after missing some rather presentable goalscoring opportunities.

With 13 goals in 36 Championship appearances he remains Leeds’ top scorer this season, but the club did dip into the transfer market over the winter to bring in Jean-Kevin Augustin on loan.

However, Bamford appears to continue to have Marcelo Bielsa’s support and said that he has learned to deal with some of the criticism sent his way.

“Earlier this season, some of the fans wanted me out of the team and it probably would have been easier for Marcelo to do that,” he told iNews.“But while I wasn’t scoring goals, I was bringing other things to the side and the fact he has stuck with me means a lot. Ultimately you’re going to be judged on your goals, but there is more that a striker brings to the team, especially when you’re playing up front on your own. I would like to score more – I probably should have a handful more – but if you look at my all-round game I feel I’ve done alright.“Earlier this season, I would be lying in bed after a game and scrolling through Twitter, not even looking for myself, and would see some abuse. My missus would say ‘just ignore it’, so I’ve got better at doing that. I’m quite laid-back so it doesn’t affect me too much and I know in my own head whether I’ve played well and should have scored or not.”Learning to copeSome of the abuse subjected at footballers on social media is pretty unedifying and it is good to see that Bamford has found a way to cope with it.Obviously, he is aware that some of his finishing has not been of the level required this season and it appears that he is keen to improve on this.If Leeds are promoted, he will likely see another forward brought in to compete with him in the top-flight and it will be interesting how he deals with the competition.

Liverpool’s Curtis Jones has the world at his feet

This article is part of Football FanCast’s In The Pipeline series, which takes a look at some of the most promising young talent either linked with clubs or emerging from their academies…

Liverpool will be a victim of their own success in December.

Due to their Champions League win, they will participate in the Club World Cup in Qatar just before Christmas. Usually, that wouldn’t provide too much of an issue, but they have also advanced to the semi-finals of the League Cup. As such, they will be forced to play two matches in 24 hours.

Jurgen Klopp and Co will not be able to field the same starting XI in both games. As such, a number of the club’s youngsters are expected to start against Aston Villa in the first-leg of the domestic competition, including Curtis Jones. Not only that, the 18-year-old is expected to captain the side, according to Goal.com.

It will not be his first start for the Anfield outfit though. That came in January of this year, against Wolves in the FA Cup. Although that ended in a disappointing 2-1 loss for the Reds, it still provided the then 17-year-old with his maiden taste of first-team action. His form at youth level shows that it could be the first of many.

Jones is a versatile player. Usually a midfielder who operates centrally – whether it be in an attacking, defensive, or middling role – he has also been used on the left and right flanks. No matter where he has featured for the club’s development squads, though, he has been prolific in front of goal. In 76 matches, he has 36 goals. Rather impressive, it must be said.

His displays have earned him two more first-team appearances this campaign, both in the League Cup. Whilst he has failed to hit the back of the net, he did provide an assist against Arsenal in the previous round. He also scored a crucial penalty in the shoot-out after the match had ended 5-5, whilst he also picked up the Man of the Match award against MK Dons.

Alex Inglethorpe, the Reds’ academy director, has been amongst those to talk up the teenager’s ability. Talking after that match against the League One side, he said: “Curtis was excellent in possession and looked a real threat. He has been outstanding in the Under-23s games so far this season and having that run of games has helped him. He’s got bigger, stronger and gained more experience.

“I think Curtis can play in two positions – left of the front three and in midfield, too. He’s possibly more Adam Lallana than Sadio Mane in terms of his approach and capabilities.”

Big praise from someone in the know. Of course, those are big names to live up to, but his performances so far indicate that he has the quality to perhaps fulfill those comparisons. Should he take the armband against the Villans, it could be a glimpse of the future for the club’s supporters.

In other news, Liverpool fans react to the speculation surrounding one 19-year-old.

Man Utd fans react to transfer update on Borussia Dortmund prodigy Jadon Sancho

Since making the move abroad from Manchester City, Jadon Sancho has taken to German football like a duck to water.

The 19-year-old has been electric for Borussia Dortmund since joining the club back in the summer of 2017, providing 18 goals and a further 31 assists across all competitions.

That form has naturally seen his name linked with a move away from Germany, with clubs like City and Manchester United reported to be interested in securing his signature in the future.

Now, The Daily Mail claim the teenager is keen to leave Dortmund, thus “giving his growing list of admirers further encouragement”.

After hearing the update on their pursuit of Sancho, United fans flooded to Twitter to voice their thoughts on the developing situation.

Many supporters of the Manchester side voiced their concerns over potentially signing the England international, with one fan in particular claiming that he isn’t even better than £15m man Daniel James.

Darrent Bent is surprised Everton haven’t tried to sign Alfredo Morelos

This article is part of Football FanCast’s Pundit View series, which provides opinion and analysis on recent quotes from journalists, pundits, players and managers…

Darren Bent has spoken of his surprise at not seeing Everton make a move for Rangers striker Alfredo Morelos, as reported by Football Insider.

What did he say?

The Colombian striker has been in incredible scoring form this season, already getting 22 goals across the SPFL, Scottish Cup and Europa League from just 19 starts and 7 substitute appearances.

It is arguably his record in Europe that has been most eye-catching, as he already has 11 goals and 4 assists from 10 starts and 2 substitute appearances, a tally that includes 2 goals and an assist in two games against Porto.

Speaking of the Colombian striker, Bent told Football Insider: “I’m surprised Everton don’t try to go and sign him, he’s a bit temperamental, but he can score goals.

“He’s got the great ability and to be fair to Rangers if they can go and get a load of money for him, let’s say £20m+ for him, they’ve still got Jermain Defoe, who gets goals week-in-week-out.”

Hard to argue

It is difficult to go against Bent’s way of thinking, as a move for Morelos would make sense from an Everton point of view.

This comment comes shortly after it was reported that the Toffees are looking to sign Goncalo Paciencia from Eintracht Frankfurt.

While the Portugal international could certainly be a good addition to Marco Silva’s side, Morelos is someone who has been in and amongst the goals this season, having also bagged 30 across all competitions term.

Everton haven’t had a player who has scored 15 goals in all competitions across a season since Romelu Lukaku left, so they should be looking to sign a player such as Morelos, who has shown how prolific he can be.

It would be easy to say that his goals are worth less because they came in Scotland, but his European return should dispel that argument.

His disciplinary record has also been questionable in the past, but there are even signs that is improving, as he is yet to be sent off this season, picking up five yellow cards so far.

Arsenal’s Eddie Nketiah must "keep patient", says John Hartson

Speaking exclusively to Football FanCast, John Hartson has urged Eddie Nketiah to be patient at Leeds amidst rumours that Bristol City are interested in taking him to Ashton Gate.

The 20-year-old joined the Whites on loan this summer, and so far has four goals in his first nine matches in all competitions. However, he is yet to start a game for the side in the Championship, with his two inclusions in the starting XI both coming in the League Cup instead.

In the video below, we look at where it all went wrong for Arsenal’s former ‘saviour’, Mesut Ozil…

Former Wales international Hartson has been commenting on Nketiah’s situation at Elland Road and his lack of playing time, and has suggested that the Arsenal man should stay patient for now with the Yorkshire outfit.

“For me, he has just got to keep patient, he’s just got to keep trying to score goals,” he said. “I’m sure Leeds will want to keep him obviously, but I think sometimes as a young player you just want to keep playing.

“Would it be a good idea (to go to Bristol City)? I don’t know. Leeds are challenging, they got to the play-offs last season, they lost to Derby. He’s with a really experienced manager there. He’s got a good group of players, just be patient for now, keep banging the goals in, and I’m sure they’ll be some more clubs than Bristol City that will come in for him in January.”

The form he has showed so far this campaign means he is getting harder and harder to ignore. At 20 years old, he has plenty of time ahead of him, but it is understandable that he is chomping at the bit to get on to the field as much as possible. After all, the whole point of this loan spell is to see more senior action in a bid to accelerate his development.

On the other hand, though, this could be fantastic for his strength of character. So far in his career, he has been a big fish in a small pond for Arsenal’s U23s, but now he is playing men’s football and is finding out that it isn’t as easy.

This will happen at times in his career, and it is better that he finds it out now rather than later on. Under Bielsa, he will progress as a footballer and, if he continues to hit the back of the net, he will give the Argentinian no choice but to play him. Should he be able to break into the team of a promotion challenger, that would surely send a stronger message to Unai Emery rather than taking the easy option somewhere else.

Arsenal: Fans praise Shkodran Mustafi after solid performance in the Europa League

It is probably fair to say that Shkodran Mustafi does not always cover himself in glory.

The German hasn’t had the best of careers in north London and has this season fallen out of favour under manager Unai Emery.

Mustafi is yet to feature for the Gunners in the Premier League, but has made three appearances for the club this term – twice in the Europa League and once in the EFL Cup win over Nottingham Forest last month. In all three of those games, though, he has conceded no goals.

Last night, the 27-year-old put in a solid shift for the Gunners as they defeated Standard Liege 4-0 in the group stages of the Europa League, with WhoScored awarding him an overall rating of 7.35/10 for his efforts.

Mustafi has drawn praise from Arsenal fans on Twitter after last night’s match, with some now calling for him to be introduced in Unai Emery’s Premier League squad soon…

Arsenal fans gutted as Alexandre Lacazette is ruled out until October

[ad_pod ]

It looked as though Arsenal would soon be back to full strength.

On Thursday, Hector Bellerin and Kieran Tierney returned to full training, while Rob Holding had also done so earlier in the week. Konstantinos Mavropanos, the only other member of the Arsenal squad recently in the treatment room, is also back with the first-team.

How do football vloggers afford to watch their team week in, week out? Find out in the video below…

However, there has been another setback for Unai Emery and co.

The club announced on Friday that Alexandre Lacazette is injured and will not return until October.

The statement issued confirmed that he has been playing with an injury for several weeks, and he has been advised to rest in order to return to full strength.

Fans of the Emirates Stadium outfit have been reacting to the news in their droves, and it is clear they are less than happy with the update.

They have taken to Twitter to share their thoughts, and you can see some of the best comments from the social media platform below.

Leeds United fans respond to Bielsa comments by blasting gaffer

[ad_pod ]

Leeds United succumbed to defeat in south-east London at the hands of Charlton Athletic, who moved into a playoff position as a result.

Despite all of the visitors’ dominance – recording a total of 19 shots to the Addicks’ three, per WhoScored – they couldn’t even salvage at least a point.

Macauley Bonne netted his first goal for the club despite his lack of intention behind it – United goalkeeper Kiko Casilla parried a Tom Lockyer volley onto the back of the striker as the ball then trickled into the net.

It’s only Leeds’ second defeat of the season and first away from home, yet a number of the Elland Road faithful have been questioning their manager Marcelo Bielsa following the match.

Reacting to Bielsa’s analysis of the game, one supporter called his tactics ‘one dimensional’ whilst another said the team were too predictable without a ‘Plan B.’

The Whites would have regained control of first place with a victory at The Valley, but this loss now sees them two points off the new league leaders West Brom, who they play on Tuesday night.

A further member of the United crowd also questioned whether Bielsa was as good as everyone made him out to be.
