Tottenham gifted big Nunez boost

As per The Sun, Tottenham Hotspur have been handed a potentially big boost in their pursuit of Benfica star Darwin Nunez.

The Lowdown: Spurs in the mix?

The Lilywhites and transfer chief Fabio Paratici are allegedly in the mix to sign Nunez, who seems set to be one of the big name transfers of 2022.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/tottenham-newest-updates/” title=”Tottenham newest updates…” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Benfica’s prolific star, who has scored a quite incredible 24 goals in 24 league appearances so far this season, is now attracting interest from top clubs all over Europe.

Just last week, The Daily Express revealed Tottenham had officials in attendance to run the rule over Nunez during his side’s Champions League quarter-final first leg loss to Liverpool in Portugal.

Meanwhile, A Bola (via Sport Witness) have reported in the last few days that Spurs are in the hunt alongside numerous sides, with The Sun now sharing a potential advantage for manager Antonio Conte.

The Latest: Nunez making decisions…

As per their information, Nunez’ representatives believe he is ‘ready’ to move this summer as they seek a major transfer and weigh moves behind-the-scenes.

This is where Spurs come in, as it is claimed that Hotspur Way is a ‘preferable location’ for the 22-year-old alongside Liverpool and Arsenal.

The Verdict: Boost for Conte?

The Lilywhites, who are without a natural senior alternative to star centre-forward Harry Kane, arguably need to sign one in the summer for Conte if they’re serious about getting back among the Premier League’s elite for 2022/2023.

Already well in contention for a top four place after a stunning turnaround, the summer task is to back Tottenham’s head coach with major signings who can improve his chances of continuing to transform the club while competing on multiple fronts.

Nunez, valued at around £60m, would be a major statement of intent on behalf of Paratici, Spurs and chairman Daniel Levy.

Anfield Index podcaster Hari Sethi, for example, is one football critic who has raved over the Uruguayan’s ability – branding him an ‘absolute beast’ with ‘rapid quick’ speed (Twitter).

South America’s next star in the making would be a more-than adequate addition to back up Kane or even provide real competition for the striking role under Conte.

When West Brom wanted to sign Van Dijk

West Brom have been pretty active in the transfer market in the past, having splashed out significant sums of money on players like Karlan Grant, Jay Rodriguez and Nacer Chadli among others.

Hindsight is a wonderful thing but one figure the club will now be wishing they had made a move to sign is Liverpool defender Virgil van Dijk.

According to an article from the Express & Star, the Dutchman “came on the Baggies’ radar – along with a host of other clubs – while he was at Celtic.”

The article also adds that the former Hoops man “was extensively scouted and recommended to Tony Pulis,” but the club didn’t make a move to bring him to the Hawthorns before he eventually moved to Southampton in 2015.Former Baggies midfielder Darren Fletcher also revealed that he had recommended the Midlands club to sign Van Dijk, but they weren’t too keen to pay the money that was being touted for the defender at the time.During his time with the Saints, the centre-back scored seven goals in 80 appearances across all competitions following a £13m move. That was before making his mega-money journey to Liverpool in the 2018 January transfer window for a fee of £75m.Since becoming a Reds player, the 30-year-old has been a revelation for Jurgen Klopp’s side, making 168 appearances in which he’s found the back of the net 16 times as well as winning the Premier League and Champions League. To further highlight the defender’s rise to football’s upper echelons, he won the 2018/19 UEFA Men’s Player of the Year award, beating the likes of Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo. With that in mind, it’s hardly a surprise that Roy Keane dubbed him a “beast of a man” back in 2020.Labelled as a player that has “got everything” in his game by Crystal Palace winger Wilfried Zaha, the £49.5m-rated defender has once again shown what a formidable defensive unit he is for the Merseyside club by making more clearances (119) than any other player in Liverpool’s squad as well as winning an impressive 88.9% of the tackles he’s made.According to Salary Sport, the 6 foot 4 defensive titan is currently picking up a weekly wage of £240k-per-week, making him the highest earner at Liverpool, which is understandable given what he’s done for the team since his arrival. From a West Brom point of view, it’s hard to see this being anything other than a howler from Pulis by not making the most of the recommendations that were sent his way about Van Dijk, leaving the Midlands club to have nothing but nightmares about what could have been.In other news: WBA heading for disaster over “powerful” 30-goal “diamond”, supporters will be fuming

NUFC: Magpies keen on Milenkovic

An update has emerged on Newcastle United and their interest in Fiorentina centre-back Nikola Milenkovic…

What’s the talk?

According to the Daily Mail, the Magpies are now plotting a move to sign the central defender to bolster their squad this month.

The report claims that it will take £32m for the Italian side to part ways with him, whilst Southampton’s Jan Bednarek is also mentioned as an option.

Vidic 2.0

Eddie Howe could find his own Nemanja Vidic in a deal to sign the Serbian colossus, as the Serie A beast has previously been compared to his compatriot.

In reaction to those comparisons, Milenkovic said: “It is magnificent to be compared to the likes of Vidic and I have to stay humble with both feet firmly on the ground.

“Vidic was one hell of a player while I am in the fledgeling stage of my career and hence I have to keep working hard in order to climb that mountain. Krstajic’s praise means so much because it’s an impetus to keep improving.”

Pol Lirola previously lauded the defender’s talents as “extraordinary” and his statistics in Italy back up that claim as he has consistently impressed.

In the Serie A this season, he has averaged a SofaScore rating of 7.13. He has won an excellent 71% of his duels overall in the division, making 3.1 tackles and interceptions per game along with 3.2 clearances – as per SofaScore.

This shows that he has the ability to perform consistently to a high standard at the top level. Therefore, he could improve Newcastle’s defence and hand them a greater chance of keeping clean sheets and picking up points in the Premier League, aiding their bid to avoid relegation.

At the age of 24, he also has plenty of time left to develop and progress further as a player. This means that he could fulfil his potential and become the new Vidic and end his career as a Premier League icon by delivering the goods over the course of a number of years at Newcastle.

Therefore, Howe must ensure that the club are able to match the £32m price tag Fiorentina have placed on his head to get a deal done in the coming days. The comparisons to Vidic and his performance data in the Serie A suggest that he could be a strong addition to the team and they must work hard to bring him to St. James’ Park.

Liverpool fans slam Joel Matip v Palace

A number of Liverpool supporters have lambasted Joel Matip’s below-par performance in the Reds’ 3-1 win away to Crystal Palace.

Jurgen Klopp’s men knew that victory was imperative at Selhurst Park on Sunday afternoon, following Manchester City’s 1-1 draw at Southampton the previous day.

Liverpool strode into a 2-0 lead thanks to first half goals from Virgil van Dijk and Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain but they lost their way, allowing Odsonne Edouard to give Palace hope.

Fortunately, Fabinho was on-hand to fire home a late penalty to ease the nerves, meaning the Reds are now nine points behind City with a game in hand.

One player who really struggled at Palace was Matip, who looked all at sea for chunks of the match, losing the ball 15 times according to Sofascore and needing to be bailed out by Alisson after a sloppy pass left Michael Olise through on goal.

Winless Punjab take on bogey opposition

Cricinfo previews the 16th match of the IPL, between Chennai and Punjab at Chepauk

Sunday, March 21
Start time 2000 (1430 GMT)Big pictureKings XI Punjab will be wary of Matthew Hayden and his Mongoose which wreaked havoc against Delhi•Indian Premier League

Kings XI Punjab’s horror start to the IPL, continued on Friday when they were defeated by a team they had never lost to before. Kumar Sangakkara would love to set the balance right on Sunday by winning against a team they have never beaten.Punjab may have lost all three matches so far, but none of them have been knock-outs. They will also take heart from the performance of fellow strugglers Rajasthan Royals, who shrugged off their long injury-list to get the better of Kolkata Knight Riders in Ahmedabad on Saturday.Punjab’s opponents, Chennai Super Kings, are again going to miss their star player and regular captain, MS Dhoni, but are high on confidence after two impressive wins in a row. Their home fans will also be eager to see the Mongoose bat which Matthew Hayden used to such brutal effect in the victory over the fancied Delhi Daredevils. That win featured the first significant batting performances from Hayden and stand-in captain Suresh Raina, their two most important batsmen along with Dhoni. However, Chennai’s bowling, with the exception of the accurate Muttiah Muralitharan, remains a source of worry – they have conceded 185 or more twice in three matches.Team talkChennai’s batting wears a settled look, and they are likely to go with the same top seven they played against Delhi. The only major selection headache for the Chennai think-tank is which of the Indian seamers should partner L Balaji – Sudeep Taygi, Manpreet Gony and Joginder Sharma have all got a game each without inspiring confidence.Punjab will have to decide whether they want to pick four overseas batsmen again, or whether to choose one of the South African fast bowling pair of Yusuf Abdulla and Rusty Theron, especially after Sreesanth’s two horror matches, where his seven overs have leaked 93 runs. If they stick with the four foreign batsmen policy, medium-pacer Love Ablish, who had a solid domestic season, is a potential starter.Previously…Chennai 5 Punjab 0
Chennai have won all five previous encounters between the two sides, including the semi-final of the first season in Mumbai. Most of Chennai’s batsmen have had at least one good game against Punjab: in the first game the two teams played in the IPL, Michael Hussey’s century overpowered Punjab, in the next it was 60s from Subramanian Badrinath and Dhoni, and Raina’s brisk half-century finished off the semi-finals early. Hayden bludgeoned 89 in the first encounter in 2009, and Parthiv Patel top-scored with 32 in a low-scoring skirmish the last time the teams met.In the spotlightYuvraj Singh’s return from injury hasn’t quite gone to plan, failing to get into double-digits in each of his three innings so far. A return to form is vital for Punjab’s most imposing batsman.Chennai’s fielding was one of the factors in their win over Delhi Daredevils – Justin Kemp’s one-handed effort ended Virender Sehwag’s onslaught, and Raina held a couple of smart ones to send back two other dangerous batsmen – Tillakaratne Dilshan and AB de Villiers.Prime numbersYuvraj may not have contributed with the bat, but he is Punjab’s most economical bowler this season, giving away only 5.55 runs each overSuresh Raina is third on the list of most sixes hit in the IPL, behind only Adam Gilchrist and Yusuf PathanChatter”I am surely happy on winning two games. But there are another eleven matches to go. We have experienced that one can go in superb form and suddenly lose the momentum.”

“We executed our plans on the field well but it was the first six overs that cost us the match… Hopefully we can turn around the results in the next games. The guys are working very hard.”

Aston Villa eye Brighton’s Yves Bissouma

This has been a quite staggering transfer window for Steven Gerrard’s Aston Villa side with the Midlands outfit bringing some of Europe’s top talent to the club.

Lucas Digne was signed from a top-flight rival while the addition of a certain Philippe Coutinho, who has already bagged his first Villa Park goal, has really made the supporters stand up and take notice.

What’s the word?

Villa have added two further players to their ranks and on Tuesday confirmed the signing of Swedish goalkeeper Robin Olsen until the end of the campaign.

However, Johan Lange and the club’s recruitment team aren’t done yet.

They could raid another of their Premier League rivals before the window closes with the club still very much holding an interest in Brighton’s Yves Bissouma.

That’s the word of Sky Sports reporter Dharmesh Sheth who was speaking live during the broadcaster’s Transfer Show earlier this week.

He said: “They remain interested in the Brighton midfielder, Yves Bissouma. I mean, if they were to get a signing like that over the line in addition to the ones they’ve already got, what a window that would be.”

Fans surely buzzing

As the reporter alludes to, this would cap off a quite wonderful window for Villa where they will have strengthened in a number of hugely important areas.

Signing Digne has added international experience to their full-back positions while it really feels as though Coutinho’s arrival, even if it does end up being for just six months, has finally replaced Jack Grealish.

Watching the attacking midfielder walk away for £100m last summer was a bitter pill to swallow for those associated with Villa but it feels as though Christian Purslow and Lange have now made up for that judgement call.

Coutinho opened his account for the club on his debut last weekend, rescuing a point at home to Manchester United and although Bissouma doesn’t offer the same attacking threat, he could also help the club replace one of their lost stars.

That happens to be Idrissa Gueye, somebody who left Villa to join Everton and is now starring for French giants, PSG.

A tough-tackling machine, the now 32-year-old won a mind-boggling 4.1 tackles per game in the 2015/16 campaign at Villa Park and has carried that form on throughout his career, winning 2.7 in Ligue 1 this term.

Bissouma offers up similar characteristics, battling to 3.6 successful tackles per match in 2021/22, showing all the fight and aggression needed to succeed at the top level. That’s a remarkable tally and with that in mind, Gerrard would be adding another proven Premier League performer to his armoury.

Combine that with his ability to finally replace Gueye in the middle of the park and it’s a potential acquisition this winter that would leave supporters buzzing with excitement.

Sunderland transfer news on Hume

Many Sunderland fans have been left buzzing over some news that has emerged involving Trai Hume.

As per the official website of the Stadium of Light faithful, they have now signed the youngster from Linfield for an undisclosed fee on a four-and-a-half-year deal, with the option of a further year.

He can play both at right-back and in midfield, and will now give Lee Johnson another handy option in his squad ahead of their promotion push.

Hume has previously been dubbed as one of the hottest properties in the Irish League, and had scored three goals and made a further two assists from 17 games this season (Transfermarkt) before moving to the North East.

Nonetheless, at just 19 years of age, he is no doubt an exciting prospect, and one that can Johnson can now integrate into his team.

Sunderland fans slam Embleton vs Ipswich

Many Sunderland fans have been slamming the performance of Elliot Embleton despite their 2-0 win at home to Ipswich Town on Saturday.

The Black Cats had to wait until the 85th minute at the Stadium of Light before Luke O’Nien broke the deadlock, with Aiden McGeady making sure of the points in injury time.

Embleton did not have his best game in a Sunderland shirt, losing out on three of his duels, while he also failed to record a shot on target, accurate cross or long ball from midfield. He lost possession of the ball on 14 occasions as well, the fourth-most out of any of his teammates (SofaScore).

Sunderland fans slam Embleton

These Sunderland supporters slammed Embleton’s performance on Twitter, with one even going as far as to claim that he ‘makes me miss Chris Maguire’, a winger who left them for Lincoln City after just five goals and five assists in the Championship last season (Transfermarkt), while a couple of others claimed that the 22-year-old was ‘awful’ against Ipswich:
