Arsenal fans unhappy at reports linking club with move for Marouane Fellaini

Following his refusal to sign a new contract at Manchester United, the Daily Express have reported that Marouane Fellaini is a transfer target for Arsenal net summer.

The Belgian international, who is valued at £10.8million by Transfermarkt, has reportedly turned down a £120,000-a-week extension to stay at Old Trafford, meaning that if his contract situation is not resolved by January, he will be eligible to speak to other clubs.

And one of the clubs hoping to speak to the 29-year-old are Arsenal, who would be able to sign Fellaini on a free at the end of the season.

A divisive footballer, Fellaini has had a fairly decent start to the campaign, scoring four goals in 10 appearances for Manchester United. The club offering the Belgian a new deal is an indication of his improvements over recent months.

However, despite his improved form, Arsenal fans are certainly not excited about the prospect of having Fellaini at the Emirates and took to Twitter to express their displeasure…

Transfer Focus: Michael Keane the ideal signing to help rebuild Man United identity

According to reports from The Daily Mail, Manchester United are set to re-sign Burnley defender Michael Keane in a £25million transfer deal.

What’s the word?

Having established himself as one of the most exciting young Englishmen in the Premier League this season, playing a pivotal role in Burnley’s survival bid whilst claiming his first two caps for the Three Lions, Keane’s future has been the subject of much debateÂahead of the summer – and particularly since Sky Sports claimed last month that he’ll leave Turf Moor at the end of the season.

The Daily Mail, however, seem pretty convinced Keane’s next destination will be the club he left permanently two years ago for just £2million in Manchester United, where he’d risen through the youth ranks and made five appearances at senior level before a series of loan spells. It’s claimed his return will be a £25million deal, with United emerging as the clear favourites for his signature.

Do United need another centre-back?

Deciding on a long-term partner for Eric Bailly is a must for Jose Mourinho ahead of next season and aged just 24, Keane and the Ivory Coast international could provide an incredibly solid setup alongside each other for the many seasons to come, although a lack of experience at top level could be an issue at first.

But more than simply bringing another defender in, Keane represents an attempt to return to United’s traditional philosophy of nurturing their academy products towards first team level. Sure, it may be a slightly different route to the Class of ’92, but having a former youth player in the starting line-up is always welcomed at Old Trafford and will show doubters Mourinho is prepared to embrace the club’s historic values.

3 lower league gems Arsenal must look to sign in January

Arsene Wenger is renowned for his faith in youth even when it damages his first-team’s chances of achieving success domestically when required.

Our landlord feels Wenger should look to the Football League this January to provide a much-needed injection of youth into the club and find the club’s next big star.

The Gunners are now 12 years without the Premier League title and fans are beginning to become impatient with the lack of return on their investments in the first team squad.

After the success of the likes of Jamie Vardy and Dele Alli last term, the Premier League giants could do far worse than looking down the league structure.

An influx of youthful players could provide the platform for Le Prof to achieve success at the the North London outfit once again and the Football League is brimmed with talented players capable of achieving greatness.

With that in mind, here are THREE players our Tavern landlord feels Arsenal must consider buying this January.

Rushian Hepburn-Murphy

If there is one key area Arsenal lack strength in depth it’s up-front.

A clinical centre-forward has been missing from the Wenger squad since Robin Van Persie controversially departed for Manchester United in 2012.

At the age of 16 years and 176 days, he became the second youngest player in the club’s history when he came on for Christian Benteke against Sunderland in 2015.

He is also the youngest player to appear in a match for the club during the Premier League era.

Hepburn-Murphy is widely regarded at Villa Park and has been likened to Dwight Yorke recently.

Adam Armstrong

If Hepburn-Murphy isn’t the answer then why not consider Newcastle striker Adam Armstrong?

After a successful season last year at Coventry he went up a division to Yorkshire side Barnsley.

The 19-year-old is on-loan at Barnsley this season with people starting to take notice of his return of goals.

Two goals in three games thus far have seen a number of Newcastle fans become excited at the prospect of him returning to St.James’s Park.

Armstrong could become another young England prodigy snapped up by Wenger in January and has the attributes to become a success in England’s top-flight.

Teddy Bishop

Ipswich Town midfielder Teddy Bishop is gathering a number of plaudits from our Arsenal regulars for his performances for Ipswich thus far.

Despite Mick McCarthy struggling to achieve greatness at Ipswich, Bishop is becoming one of the hottest young England stars in the game currently.

Jack Wilshere and Oxlade-Chamberlain have been frozen out at Arsenal and a new injection of youth may be required with Bishop deserving to be considered.

Liverpool drop defensive disasterclass! Seven things we learned as electric Darwin Nunez can't prevent Reds from pre-season draw with Greuther Furth

The Reds' sloppy defending meant they could only come away with a 4-4 draw in their latest pre-season friendly

Some good, some very bad. That's probably the best way to view Liverpool's pre-season draw with Greuther Furth. This was the Reds' final 'warm-up' game before tougher meetings against Leicester City and Bayern Munich, and they started off promisingly, with Luis Diaz opening the scoring in sublime fashion midway through the first half.

Jurgen Klopp's 11 changes at the break led to the previously well-structured affair becoming pretty chaotic. Julian Green's equaliser two minutes after the restart set the tone, with Darwin Nunez levelling things up shortly after.

The dangerous Nunez soon doubled his tally, but Liverpool then contrived to orchestrate their own downfall, with a string of defensive errors gifting Greuther Furth a 4-3 lead.

For the final 10-or-so minutes it looked like the Reds were heading for defeat, only for Mohamed Salah to level things up at the death and save his side's blushes. Klopp was all smiles at the end, even taking time for a few selfies with the opposing staff, but certain things he witnessed will have frustrated him.

GOAL looks at what we learned during the clash in Germany…

  • Sky Sports

    Reds aren't risking Szoboszlai

The pre-game excitement for the friendly was tempered slightly by the absence of Dominik Szoboszlai from the squad. Liverpool acted quickly to allay fears of any serious injury, with Klopp explaining: "He rolled his ankle slightly in training, really nothing.

"Everybody is super-positive about it, himself first. If we would have today a Premier League game or whatever, he could play. So, we don't take a risk and we will see what we will do with the Leicester game after travel [and] stuff like this. But for the Bayern game he will be ready, definitely."

The £60 million ($77m) arrival from RB Leipzig has been presented as the ideal Kloppian midfielder, the perfect blend of bravery, work rate and creativity. His absence here is not the end of the world, but it is undoubtedly a blow.

This low-stakes game would have provided the Hungarian with another platform to build up an understanding with his team-mate ahead of the campaign kicking off properly. Klopp will be eager to test him out in the Reds' remaining pre-season fixtures.

    Sloppy defending

Liverpool's second-half back four put on a defensive disasterclass. There's no other way to describe it. They surrendered their team's lead within a few minutes of taking the field and things did not get any better from there.

The second goal was a bit of a horror show for Joel Matip personally, as he fluffed a clearance and allowed Lukas Petkov to fire the ball through the legs of a fuming Adrian. Armindo Sieb then profited from some seriously slack defending, taking all the time in the world to finish off Petkov's cut back from close range.

The fourth goal was worse. After the ball broke kindly to Sieb, three of Liverpool's four defenders cravenly retreated towards their goal-line, again affording the forward far too much space to score from just outside the box.

It's understandable they struggled. Changing your entire back four at half-time is rarely a recipe for defensive consistency. Even still, the lack of intensity in their challenges will have done Matip, Joe Gomez and Kostas Tsimikas very few favours as they look to break into the starting line-up this season.

Is Ben Doak ready for more football?

Another pre-season friendly, another encouraging performance from Ben Doak. Still just 17 years old, the Scot was handed a pair of Premier League cameos last season after impressing for Liverpool's Under-21 side. And it could be time for him to take the next step in his development this season.

Recently, Klopp has been singing his praises, saying: "Ben Doak, still 17, but he is just a joy to watch! With all the little struggles he has with losing the ball here & there, but the bravery, speed and the power is so cool to see."

It was more of the same here. He carved out the first meaningful opportunity of the game completely off his own back, skipping past two players down the right before firing an effort into the side netting.

Liverpool's forward line is well stocked with different options, but in the cup competitions the Reds must now be seriously considering handing Doak a start or two. There's also the option of sending him out on loan, and on the evidence of his pre-season performances, there would be no shortage of suitors.

    Luis Diaz came to play

After making a roaring start to his Liverpool career, Luis Diaz's first full season at the club was ultimately underwhelming, with a knee injury restricting his involvement. As a result, the Colombian will be laser focussed on making up for lost time this campaign – and this restless energy was definitely present against Greuther Furth.

Setting up camp on the left wing, Diaz was constantly looking to test his opposite number and had plenty of success. After catching the eye early on with some explosive runs, he opened the scoring inside 22 minutes, showing razor-sharp control to create just enough space for himself in the box before finding the bottom corner.

The goal was the highlight of a seriously impressive cameo and it suggests that Diaz could be primed to replicate the devastating burst of form that got Liverpool fans so excited at the beginning of last year.

Chelsea's 2022-23 signings RANKED: Mykhailo Mudryk already a MAJOR concern but Enzo Fernandez looks the real deal

Blues co-owner Todd Boehly has invested mega money to improve the squad this season – but how many of the new faces have hit the ground running?

Chelsea have shattered every transfer record in the book this season, forking out a staggering £600 million ($749m) on a grand total of 17 players.

Nine of those came in before Thomas Tuchel's sacking last September, and the club's new owners provided his successor Graham Potter with a huge January war chest to bring in the remaining eight.

French full-back Malo Gusto and Brazilian wonderkid Andrey Santos were among those to sign for Chelsea in the winter window, with the former sent straight back to Lyon on loan and the latter taking up a similar offer at Vasco da Gama until the summer.

🏆 TOP STORY: Frank is back! Lampard returns as interim Chelsea boss📣 HAVE YOUR SAY: Does Lampard's Chelsea return prove Boehly has NO IDEA?🚨 MUST READ: PSG would be CRAZY to keep Messi

The rest of the new additions have all made their debuts for the Blues, either at senior or Under-21 level, but very few have been able to make a big impact.

Potter was dismissed at the start of April due to his failure to gel the new squad together. Now, club legend Frank Lampard has been brought back to steady the ship as interim boss before Potter's permanent replacement tries to succeed where he failed in the summer.

Amid the ongoing chaos in west London, GOAL assesses how all of Chelsea's new signings have fared in their first few months at the club…

Getty1Enzo Fernandez (£107m, Benfica)

The most expensive player in the history of British football, Chelsea paid £107 million to lure World Cup winner Fernandez away from Benfica on January deadline day, and he slotted straight into Potter's engine room.

It was always going to be difficult for a deep-lying midfielder to justify such a hefty price tag, but Fernandez has given it his best shot, standing out with his superb passing range and tenacity out of possession.

The 22-year-old is a classy operator and will surely prove to be well worth the investment in the long-term, not least because he seems to be ideally suited to English football.

STAR RATING: ⭐⭐⭐⭐

AdvertisementGetty2Wesley Fofana (£72m, Leicester City)

Fofana has been restricted to just 13 appearances for Chelsea to date, having missed the majority of his first season in west London due to a serious knee injury.

Still, the 22-year-old has impressed since his return to action in March, and produced a colossal performance at the back during the Blues' 0-0 draw with Liverpool on Tuesday.

Lampard will surely give Fofana a key role in his plans as Chelsea seek to salvage a top-half finish and go all the way in the Champions League.

STAR RATING: ⭐⭐⭐

Getty Images3Joao Felix (Loan, Atletico Madrid)

Alongside Fernandez, Atletico loanee Felix has undoubtedly shone brightest out of Chelsea's crop of January signings.

He made a huge impression on his debut against Fulham before getting himself sent off, but has learned from that mistake since returning from suspension to lead the Blues' attack.

Felix has only found the net twice so far for Chelsea, but his quality is undeniable. The 23-year-old is capable of making the difference in the final third with his excellent pass selection and dribbling ability, and defenders are often left on their heels when he explodes into action.

Chelsea must do everything they can to buy the Portugal international outright in the summer.

Getty4Benoit Badiashile (£35m, Monaco)

Badiashile has made a solid, if rather unspectacular start to his Chelsea career, featuring in eight Premier League games to date.

The Frenchman is strong and quick, with good instincts when it comes to breaking up play and stepping out from the back, but he wasn't able to nail down a spot in Potter's line up.

Lampard's return could change things for Badiashile, who has all the necessary attributes to become a top defender in the future.

Queensland declaration sets up exciting final day

ScorecardFile photo: Chris Hartley scored 69 not out in Queensland’s first innings and took five catches behind the stumps•Getty Images

Western Australia ended the penultimate day with a lead of 291 runs after Queensland declared with a trail of 138 runs in their first innings in pursuit of an outright win.Queensland, resuming on 2 for 111, lost Peter Forrest off the second ball of the day, and two overs later saw Michael Philipson depart, Nathan RimmIngton accounting for both the wickets. However, Chris Lynn and Chris Hartley added 121 runs to steer the home side out of trouble. Lynn top-scored with 85, including 13 fours and a six, but his exit was followed by the dismissals of Jack Wildermuth and captain James Hopes in quick succession, and Queensland declared their innings shortly before the tea interval. Nathan Coulter-Nile and Rimmington picked up two wickets each.Western Australia, powered by half-centuries from Marcus Harris and captain Adam Voges, played ball and scored at a brisk pace to move the game forward. They came together once two wickets fell after the opening stand of 62. Once the third-wicket stand of 41 was broken by Peter George, WA lost three more wickets as Shaun Marsh, Sam Whiteman and Ashton Agar fell for single-digit scores. Voges’ 53 not out led them past 150 as Hartley pouched five catches behind the stumps.”I think the way [Western Australia] played this afternoon they showed they do want to set us something,” Hopes told . “The whole idea [of the declaration] was once we started to lose a few wickets this morning, our goal was to get past the follow-on then pull out.”We need to keep the chase at a reasonable level. I think what we’ve done this afternoon, if we come out and bowl well in the first half-hour and get another couple of wickets then we are starting to dictate what we’re chasing rather than waiting for them to declare.”
