Neil Lennon cuts a bewildered figure during Old Firm derby

If matches were judged on referee decisions alone, then Celtic would have been the victors at Celtic Park on Sunday afternoon.

Ending the decade on a high against their fierce rivals Rangers would have been the ideal way to close out what has been a period of unparalleled success in Scotland.

They’ve won multiple titles but on this occasion, they tasted defeat.

In fact, this was the first time the Hoops have lost to their closest rivals at home since the very start of the decade, 2010.

It was a sluggish performance from Neil Lennon’s side, one typified by the fact that defender Christopher Jullien was their biggest threat. He won a penalty and went close with two attempts, only to end up on the losing side.

That spot-kick was missed, however, but it wasn’t as though other things didn’t go Celtic’s way. They scored a goal that should have been disallowed after Odsonne Edouard handled the ball while the referee also sent off Alfredo Morelos and one of Rangers’ first-team coaches.

Focusing on that, you’d have thought the Scottish champions would have prevailed.

That’s why the image above paints a very telling picture of the game that played out in front of Celtic’s manager.

Countless things went Lennon’s way so the disbelief written all over his face is understandable given they lost the clash.

No matter how many things played out in their advantage, Rangers’ players were more up for it and resultantly came away with all three points.

Hoops fans will be hoping that come the end of the season, their manager won’t have the same bewildered and pained expression on his face.

The greatest rivalry in world football: Test your Old Firm derby knowledge below…

If he does, they may well be staring at an end to their dominance and a Rangers title. That would be the club’s worst nightmare but it’s still very possible.

The gap now is down to just two points.

In other news, one Celtic player was described as “ten times better than Ajer” after the derby defeat…

Tony Pulis willing to sell duo to fund move for new players

Along with Norwich City and Leeds United, Middlesbrough have become one of the favourites for not only promotion this season but also for the league title.

Tony Pulis has turned Boro into one of the most solid teams in the league, and as it stands they have only conceded 13 goals in the league this season – the lowest in the whole Championship.

At the weekend, Middlesbrough lost 3-0 to a high powered Villa side in what was their first loss since their 2-0 defeat to Nottingham Forest.

While they have played incredibly well throughout the season, Pulis needs reinforcements in January and in order to fund any potential deals, he has sanctioned the sales of Martin Braithwaite and Britt Assombalonga according to the Northern Echo.

The Breakdown

While their defence has been rock solid this season, Pulis’ side has struggled going forward and has only scored 22 goals this season.

Indeed, Assombalonga has only scored five goals this season in 17 appearances and just doesn’t look like a forward that suits Pulis’ direct, counter-attacking style of play. Assombalonga had a good season with the club last year as he scored 15 goals and if he is sold, there’s no doubt that he could be a superb piece of business for any other club in the league.

Braithwaite likewise doesn’t fit Pulis’ style of play and has only scored three goals this season. On the face of it, selling the duo might be seen as a huge gamble as they’re both good strikers but if they raise enough money for Pulis to bring in a replacement that fits his style, it might prove beneficial.

Cesc Fabregas: Ideal for Liverpool a year on from Philippe Coutinho

Liverpool face one of the most important months of their season so far.

The Premier League is currently on hold with international friendlies taking place all over the world. Liverpool will return to action next week against Tottenham at Wembley before kicking off their Champions League campaign against Paris St Germain at Anfield. The Reds will also face Chelsea in the Carabao Cup before facing the Blues in the league.

It could prove to be a season-defining month for Klopp as Liverpool look to secure their league title in the Premier League era. The German has guided his side to four wins from their opening four games to put the Reds top of the league. The ex-Dortmund boss should be keeping a close eye on any potential January transfer targets as the New Year approaches.

One man he could target is Chelsea midfielder – Cesc Fabregas. Valued at £27m by Transfermarkt, the Spaniard has been a key player for the Blues since joining the club from Barcelona back in 2014. The ex-Arsenal man was crucial under Antonio Conte but is yet to feature under Maurizio Sarri. Fabregas has less than one year remaining on his current deal and Liverpool could grab a bargain in January.

The Spain international remains one of the top midfielders in the world and could flourish alongside Naby Keita in the Liverpool midfield. Fabregas would replace the creativity Liverpool lost when they sold Philippe Coutinho to Barcelona back in January. The 31-year-old averaged 2.7 key passes per game last season, more than any other Liverpool player, highlighting what his arrival could bring to Klopp’s side (WhoScored).

Landing Fabregas could prove to be a masterstroke for the Merseysiders.

Tottenham Hotspur fans struggling for optimism ahead of Watford match

Tottenham Hotspur’s three-game winless run in the Premier League has dampened the mood of the supporters.

Not long ago, spirits were high as the club launched a serious title bid, but the wheels seem to have fallen off.

Mauricio Pochettino’s men can only just about see the English crown in the distance as Manchester City lead the way with a 16-point advantage over the North London club.

Not only are the team seemingly out of the title race, they are now in seventh place, three points behind the top four.

After drawing with West Bromwich Albion and losing to Arsenal and Leicester City, the fans are desperate for Tottenham to get back to winning ways.

Saturday’s opponents Watford will host Spurs at Vicarage Road fresh from a 4-2 midweek defeat to Manchester United.

Despite only winning two games in their last six top-flight outings, Marco Silva’s side have snatched points from the likes of Liverpool and Everton this season.

Tottenham fans are finding it difficult to be optimistic heading into this weekend’s encounter.

In Focus: West Ham right to send Oxford abroad

According to The Mirror, West Ham United youngster Reece Oxford will join Bundesliga side Borussia Monchengladbach on loan for the 2017-18 campaign.

What’s the story?

Oxford, 18, is widely regarded as one of the brightest talents in English football, and he was linked with the likes of Manchester United and Arsenal before signing a new four-and-a-half-year contract with West Ham towards the end of 2016.

The midfielder, who can also play at centre-back, made headlines on the opening weekend of the 2015-16 campaign when he started against Arsenal.

Much was expected of the teenager from that moment, but he failed to make a single league appearance for West Ham last term, and ended the season on loan with Reading, making five appearances for the Championship outfit.

According to The Mirror, West Ham believe that another loan move would aid Oxford’s development, and will send the youngster to Monchengladbach for the 2017-18 campaign.

Why would Oxford move abroad?

There is no question that a number of Championship clubs, and indeed some Premier League teams, would be interested in taking Oxford on loan next season.

The 18-year-old is in desperate need of first-team football, however, and a disappointing loan spell at Reading in the second half of the 2016-17 campaign will be fresh in West Ham’s memory.

Joe Hart is a recent example of an Englishman that chose to move abroad in a bid to sample a different style of football, and a year in Germany might be just what Oxford needs at this stage of his career.

The midfielder certainly has the frame to operate in the Bundesliga, which is the closest major European league in terms of style to the Premier League.

Oliver Burke impressed at RB Leipzig after leaving Nottingham Forest last summer, and West Ham could welcome back a new and mature Oxford, ready for first-team football, ahead of the 2018-19 season.

Three reasons Koeman was right to say Lukaku must leave Everton

Earlier this week, Everton manager Ronald Koeman told Belgium newspaper HLN that striker Romelu Lukaku needs to leave the club in order to achieve his potential.

The 23-year-old has been in prolific form for the Toffees ever since initially joining them on a season-long loan deal from Chelsea, and he made the move permanent for a fee of £28m the following year.

The Belgium international scored 25 times in all appearances for the Merseyside outfit last term and has netted seven of his side’s 15 Premier League goals so far this season.

Lukaku reportedly handed in a transfer request during the summer before later withdrawing it.

However, following his boss’ latest comments, a transfer away from the Toffees could be on the cards sooner rather than later.

Not all Everton fans are happy with Koeman, but here are three reasons why the Dutchman was right to say Lukaku should leave…

He might have ignited a bidding war

The Dutchman knows that there is already lots of interest in his striker, and following the Belgium international handing in a summer transfer request when Chelsea came calling, he will know that the 23-year-old will likely leave Goodison Park for pastures new in the not so distant future.

Saying that the attacker needs to leave to fulfil his potential will alert the biggest clubs across Europe, and potentially create a bidding war that could financially reward the club.

It could persuade players to move to Goodison Park

As teams like Koeman’s former club Southampton have accepted, the best plan for those at theirs and Everton’s level is to bring in players with potential for a relatively cheap fee, develop them and sell them on at a significant profit.

If Lukaku does leave for one of the European giants, other players could then see the Toffees as a stepping stone and will know that if they impress at Goodison Park, they will attract interest.

That may be a rather pragmatic view which won’t sit well with all Everton fans. But having future world-class stars for a couple of seasons is surely better than none at all?

It could motivate the striker

Koeman has sent out a message to his striker that if he continues scoring goals for Everton, he will be allowed to move on should the right club come calling.

That should motivate the Belgian to produce his best form in order to create interest among clubs, as he looks to become one of the best forwards in Europe.

Once again, a free-scoring Lukaku can only be a good thing for the Goodison outfit.

A waste of time! Gio Reyna's miserable loan spell continues as USMNT star is limited to just 10 minutes off the bench in Nottingham Forest's loss to Aston Villa

Gio Reyna played just 10 minutes off the bench for Nottingham Forest, who were beaten 4-2 by Aston Villa at Villa Park on Saturday.

    WHAT HAPPENED?

Aston Villa were absolutely on fire early, scoring three first-half goals to seemingly put the game out of reach. Ollie Watkins got the first, scoring just four minutes in while Douglas Luiz added goals 10 minutes apart later in the half.

Villa, though, couldn't make it to the locker room with that three-goal lead. A Moussa Niakhate goal in the fifth minute of first-half stoppage time gave Forest hope, and Morgan Gibbs-White used that hope to make it 3-2 with another goal just three minutes into the second half.

Just as the comeback felt on, Leon Bailey put the match beyond doubt, making it 4-2 in the 61st minute to lock up three points for Villa.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

The loss keeps Forest right in the thick of a relegation race. They currently sit 16th in the league, just four points ahead of 18th-placed Luton Town. That gap could shrink to one, though, as Luton do have a game in hand.

    USMNT IMPACT

Reyna's role at Forest continues to be extremely limited. He's only featured off the bench so far, having played just 39 minutes across his three appearances.

The loan move to Forest hasn't provided much of a change for Reyna, who continues to be used sporadically despite changing clubs in the winter. There were no reasons to be concerned about Forest easing him in but, nearly a month after his arrival, he still hasn't cracked the Forest XI.

Matt Turner, meanwhile, remains on the bench as Forest's clear No.2 and will need some sort of injury or massive change to reclaim his place in the XI.

‘Those who didn't know Mia Fishel know her now!’ – New USWNT star is exactly what Chelsea and Sam Kerr need following superb Women’s Super League debut

Emma Hayes' side are pursuing a fifth-successive league title this season, and the young American can help massively in that, as her debut showed

When Chelsea manager Emma Hayes sat down for her post-match press conference on Sunday, after the Blues had opened their new Women’s Super League season with a 2-1 win over Spurs, one journalist wanted to talk about Lauren James. The England star has captured the attention of a nation in the past year and showed her quality again at the weekend when she netted Chelsea’s second.

Hayes, though, wanted to talk about others. She wanted to talk about Niamh Charles, James’ England team-mate who assisted both goals, and she wanted to talk about Mia Fishel, the lesser-known American forward who scored on her debut, having led the line in the absence of Sam Kerr.

“She is so coachable and malleable,” Hayes said of the forward, who joined the Blues this summer from Mexican side Tigres. “Whatever instruction we're giving her she is just picking it up right away. I think she's very thoughtful about her intention. She really wanted to come to Chelsea and she knew the squad. She wants to be there training with the best and learning.”

Fishel was excellent on her debut, playing brilliantly with her back to goal as Chelsea’s starting centre-forward. Her neat footwork, strength to hold off Spurs defenders and link-up play with her new team-mates all stood out, the latter particularly impressive with James despite this being the pair’s first competitive outing together.

The moment the 22-year-old will remember most, though, came in the 28th minute when she headed Charles’ cross beyond goalkeeper Becky Spencer to give Chelsea, the club she has supported since she was eight years old, the lead at Stamford Bridge.

“It’s a dream come true,” she told the cameras afterwards. It’s a dream that has so much more to come, too. It’s early days but Fishel looks to be exactly what Chelsea – and Kerr – need as they pursue a record fifth-successive WSL title.

GettyAn unorthodox path

Fishel’s path to joining one of the biggest clubs in the world, her childhood team and the dominant force in English women’s football, has been by no means ordinary. As a 20-year-old, she was one of the top attacking prospects in the 2022 NWSL Draft and it was no surprise to see the Orlando Pride jump at the chance to select her as the fifth overall pick in December 2021. The club had just seen Alex Morgan leave for the San Diego Wave and the coach, Amanda Cromwell, worked with Fishel at college.

But the young forward wanted something that the draft couldn’t give her. “I wanted to take control of my own destiny,” she told GOAL in early 2022. Instead of moving to Orlando, Fishel crossed the border into Mexico. She signed for Tigres, one of the top teams in Liga MX Femenil, a league massively on the up that had only allowed foreign signings for the first time in 2021, having been founded just four years prior.

“What I did was historic,” she said. “You don't see U.S. players coming to Mexico. This hasn't been done yet. The rate at which the league has been growing was very appealing. They've only been here for five years or so and the global media recognition, the passionate fans, playing in [large] stadiums, you just don't get that in the U.S. I think that I deserve to be in a place where I would be appreciated and seen.”

AdvertisementGettyA force in Mexico

Fishel’s comments upon joining Tigres showed the belief she had in herself and also her ambition. If anyone had any doubts as to why, then she exhibited all the reasons with her performances in Mexico. The forward netted 47 goals in 64 games across two seasons, those contributions helping her team to win two major titles and herself a Golden Boot.

“On the absolute rise, not because of hype, but because of true genuine desire to grow and be the best version of herself day in and day out,” Tigres head coach Carmelina Moscato said of Fishel earlier this year. “I mean it when I say it’s her driving the bus. I’m just there for guidance. She’s vision clear.”

GettyFlying under the radar

But despite Fishel hitting the back of the net at a remarkable rate in a league that was regularly proving that it was constantly growing in quality, one thing was missing: a call from the United States women’s national team.

She had been involved in a training camp in late 2020 while still at college, but onlookers were left surprised time and time again that head coach Vlatko Andonovski otherwise opted against bringing Fishel in to evaluate her in the national-team environment, even while she was on fire for Tigres.

“We do follow her form and her performances,” he said in August 2022. “But I also have to say that there are a lot of players in the NWSL that are performing as good as or maybe better than Mia that we’re very happy to see.”

Back in January, the message was the same. “Mia is a very good young player,” Andonovski said, before adding: “Right now, after looking at everything, we decided the players that we have in camp are going to give us the best chance to be successful.”

GettyMoving on up

Sadly, that never changed in Andonovski’s tenure or while Fishel was in Mexico. Whether that was about the player, the coach or the league, it’s unclear, but things have changed dramatically in the last few weeks.

On August 4, Fishel completed her dream move when she was announced as a Chelsea player. “I’m excited to know London, to meet the people and get to know everybody,” she said. “I’m blessed and excited to start this journey with Chelsea.”

A few weeks later, before she had even kicked a ball competitively for her new club, Fishel was called into a USWNT camp by interim coach Twila Kilgore, the 43-year-old taking the position after Andonovski left his role following the team’s shock last-16 exit at the 2023 Women’s World Cup. On September 24, against South Africa, Fishel made her senior international debut.

“Dreams to reality,” she wrote on social media. “And it’s just the beginning.”
