Hilaire named West Indies board CEO

The West Indies Cricket Board has confirmed the appointment of Ernest Hilaire as its new chief executive

Cricinfo staff14-Sep-2009Ernest Hilaire will be the next chief executive officer of the West Indies Cricket Board, it has been announced. Hilaire, who takes office on October 1, succeeds Donald Peters, who quit in July. Steve Camacho, the former West Indies opener, stood in as the interim CEO.Hilaire takes over at a crisis period in West Indies cricket, which has been rocked by the contracts issue. The withdrawal of several senior players has already crippled the national team, which recently lost to Bangladesh at home, and the matter is now being mediated by the region’s political leadership.”The WICB is facing an extremely difficult challenge as it seeks to establish a new framework for the development of cricket in the region and Dr Hilaire is expected to be pivotal in shaping and managing the transformation which is required,” WICB president Julian Hunte said.Hilaire is the board’s fifth CEO in the last nine years, after Gregory Shillingford, Roger Brathwaite, Bruce Aanensen and Peters. As a former CEO of Cricket St Lucia, he was instrumental in the country’s bid to host matches in the 2007 World Cup. He was also appointed tournament director of the ICC World Twenty20 to be held in the Caribbean next June. He was also a former permanent secretary of Youth and Sports in St. Lucia.

Rangers fans slam James Tavernier v Sparta

Many Glasgow Rangers fans have been slamming the performance of James Tavernier despite their 2-0 win at home to Sparta Prague on Thursday night.

Two goals from Alfredo Morelos were enough to give Giovanni van Bronckhorst his first win as manager at Ibrox, a result which means that they will definitely finish second in the group and go into the next knockout round due to their superior head-to-head record against the Czech side.

However, while there were some good performances for the hosts, captain Tavernier would not have been hugely pleased with his efforts.

The right-back failed to record a single dribble, blocked shot, key pass or accurate cross in the match, while he was also guilty of losing possession of the ball on 27 separate occasions, the most by far out of any player on the pitch (SofaScore).

These Rangers fans slammed his performance on Twitter, with one supporter even going as far as to claim that Tavernier was ‘hopeless’ against Sparta:

Ramphal welcomes facilitator's involvement

Shridath Ramphal, the mediator in the bitter dispute between the West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) and the West Indies Players Association (WIPA), welcomed the appointment of a facilitator by the board to settle the issue amicably. Gerard Pinard, an industrial practitioner, is representing the board and Shridath was pleased with the early meetings.”This I think is a very positive step forward,” Shridath told . “Using a facilitator is a technique of mediation that you use to try to draw back from the more hostile exchanges. It helps develop the processes towards reconciliation through facilitators chosen by the parties, being persons in whom they have confidence, to speak for them and to agree for them, to do adeal for them if you like, to make the compromises.”Shridath was hopeful of settling the dispute by the end of August. The next meeting is scheduled for the forthcoming week.Ramphal, a former commonwealth secretary-general, was appointed to mediate after the first-choice West Indies players refused to play in the ongoing home series against Bangladesh, citing pay and contract issues as their main grievances. West Indies lost both the Test and the ODI series and the same weakened squad was named for the Champions Trophy. The players ended the strike but their availability for international cricket will depend on how soon the dispute is resolved.

Wolves: Noel Whelan praises Adama Traore

Adama Traore could be a huge success for Liverpool if he leaves Wolves to join the Reds, according to BBC pundit Noel Whelan.

The Lowdown: Traore linked with Wolves exit

The 25-year-old has been linked with a move to Anfield in the January transfer window, which would provide Jurgen Klopp with extra attacking depth.

Traore’s current Wolves deal expires in the summer of 2023 and there is little sign of him extending his stay at Molineux as things stand.

The Latest: Tipped to shine to Liverpool

Whelan believes that the Spain winger could excel in a Reds shirt, telling Football Insider that the 25-year-old could be similarly influential to superstar Liverpool pair Mohamed Salah and Sadio Mane.

The BBC pundit said:

“He’s a player who can be crucial to winning football matches.

“His pace, his aggression, his direct running – and now his end product, which he’s brushed up after his early days in the Premier League.

“He’s a more complete player now, he can get a cross into the box or a shot off on goal. If you think about it, would he fit into Liverpool’s style of play? Absolutely.

“He can be just as destructive as Salah and Mane in that side.”

The Verdict: Keep hold of him

Losing Traore would be a big blow for Wolves at a time when he is still maturing as a player and should have his best years ahead of him.

As Whelan suggested, the winger is becoming a more polished footballer, winning four Man of the Match awards from WhoScored in just seven Premier League appearances this season. He also has more dribbles per game than any other player in Europe’s major leagues, with a remarkable match average of seven (WhoScored).

That highlights how important he is to Bruno Lage, with his pace arguably the most frightening in the league, giving him a potentially match-winning attribute which Wolves cannot afford to sacrifice too readily.

Celtic: Ange provides Giakoumakis update

Ange Postecoglou has provided a fresh injury update on Celtic centre-forward Giorgos Giakoumakis…

What’s the latest?

The Celtic manager has hinted at Giakoumakis making his return to fitness for the club after the international break.

The Australian head coach singled out the Greek summer signing from VVV-Venlo as a player who could benefit from the break as he needs ten days to get himself fit.

He told The BBC, via Vital Football:

“I think from our perspective, the last international window wasn’t kind to us.

“We lost a couple of key players through injury so from our perspective we’re just keeping our fingers crossed that we get through this international window unscathed.

“There’s still guys like Giorgos who needs some work to get them over the next sort of ten days so when everyone’s fit, we haven’t been close to having everyone ready to go, so hopefully that happens.”

Excitement

Celtic fans will surely be left feeling excited by these comments from Postecoglou. They appear to suggest that he could be in contention to make his Premiership debut for the club shortly after the international break, with the Hoops traveling away to play Motherwell on the 16th.

Since joining from Venlo in the summer, the Greek striker has only made one appearance for Celtic. He played 16 minutes off the bench in the 4-0 defeat to Bayer Leverkusen, before missing the win over Aberdeen through injury on Sunday.

Upon his arrival at the club, Giakoumakis admitted that he has admired the club from afar and is confident that he has made the right decision to sign for the Scottish giants. He said:

“Celtic is one of the world’s great football clubs with the best fans around. It is a club I have admired for so long and it will now be an honour to wear this famous jersey.  To know that the manager wanted me so much to join Celtic is really humbling and it makes me know I have made the right choice.”

This shows how motivated he is to succeed at the club and fans should enjoy seeing his passion on the pitch. Along with that, his goalscoring record for Venlo suggests that he could be an exciting player for the supporter to watch in action.

Last season, he scored 26 goals in 30 Eredivisie games as he averaged a phenomenal SofaScore rating of 7.35 for the Dutch side. He has shown that he can score goals on a regular basis at a respectable standard of football, which is why fans must be excited at the prospect of the Greek forward lining up against Motherwell in two weeks.

Journalist suggests Randolph exit from West Ham

Writing for football.london, journalist and West Ham United correspondent Tom Clark has suggested that goalkeeper Darren Randolph is now the ‘most likely’ player to leave in January.

The Lowdown: Moyes overhaul…

As four new senior West Ham summer signings in Alphonse Areola, Nikola Vlasic, Alex Kral and Kurt Zouma get introduced into the squad, there were few in the way of outgoings during the last summer transfer window.

[web_stories_embed url=”https://www.footballtransfertavern.com/web-stories/west-ham-developments/” title=”West Ham developments!” poster=”” width=”360″ height=”600″ align=”none”]

Indeed, Felipe Anderson parted company and returned to former club Lazio while Fabian Balbuena left the club on a free transfer.

Since then, youngsters have gone out on loan and former club favourite Winston Reid has departed after West Ham agreed to mutually terminate his deal (Transfermarkt).

The Latest: More exits in January?

As explained by Clark, West Ham may need to free up more squad space, especially if they wish to finally sign a striker as back up for Michail Antonio.

Writing for football.london, the Hammers reporter says back up keeper Randolph is now ‘the most likely player to leave West Ham in January’ – even over the likes of Andriy Yarmolenko.

Dropping to third choice with manager David Moyes not requiring his services, the presence of both Lukasz Fabianski and Areola has ensured Randolph hasn’t played a single minute this season.

The Verdict: Time to go…

We believe parting company with the 34-year-old is certainly best for all parties, especially considering David Martin could easily fill Randolph’s spot as third-choice shot stopper.

The 50-cap Republic of Ireland international will arguably need to move away from east London to regain his spot under Stephen Kenny, so it benefits the player as well.

Contracted until 2023, West Ham and GSB could also recuperate a small fee for him.

Southampton: Armstrong to miss Wolves clash

Ralph Hasenhuttl has provided an injury update on Southampton midfielder Stuart Armstrong…

What’s the latest?

The Saints manager has confirmed that the 29-year-old will not be available to face Wolves in the Premier League on Sunday.

The Scotland international is yet to make an appearance for the Saints this season and Hasenhuttl has not given a timeline on his return.

The Austrian told the Daily Echo: “Theo Walcott was back in training today for first time in a long time, and the rest yeah so far fit, Stuey (Armstrong) still unavailable and that’s it.

“Stuey has not been training with the group, and yes Theo was this week starting with the team sessions so it will take time until he’s on the level but it’s good to have him back, and important to give him training sessions with the team.”

Frustration

Southampton fans will surely be frustrated by Hasenhuttl’s update on Armstrong. He has not explained how long the midfielder is set to be sidelined, which could also cause concern amongst supporters who are keen to see him back in action.

The 29-year-old has proven to be a reliable performer for Southampton on the wing in recent campaigns and his continued absence will frustrate fans who want to see him on the pitch. Hasenhuttl has not been able to give them a date for his potential return, with the only information being that he will be out against Wolves.

Last year, the Saints manager lauded the former Celtic man as hard-working and praised his ability to play his role in the 4-2-2-2 formation.

The 54-year-old said: “In a 4-2-2-2 with two No10 positions, that chance was a bigger one. When we changed the shape, he was there at the right moment and showed up.

“From that moment on, he showed me he can be a No10 that is disciplined and is hard-working against the ball which is what I expect from him.

“It’s a very demanding position and you must be smart and disciplined for this position.”

This shows how highly Hasenhuttl rates the £48k-per-week beast and illustrates why his absence is such a blow for the Saints. Last season, Armstrong provided four goals and five assists in 32 Premier League starts, averaging a SofaScore rating of 6.76.

His ability to remain consistent whilst also chipping in with goals and assists, along with working hard in the number ten role, is why he is a big miss in the team at the moment. Southampton fans will surely be hoping that he is back in action sooner rather than later.

Ciaran Dickson scores for Celtic B

Ciaran Dickson appears to have completed a move to Celtic after turning out for the Hoops’ B team against Morton on Saturday, as per The Scottish Sun.

The Lowdown: Dickson was pictured with a Celtic shirt recently

Dickson, who was described as ‘terrific’ by Steven Gerrard last season, was a surprise release at Ibrox in the summer.

The 19-year-old only signed a new deal with Rangers back in January but was let go at the end of the 2020/21 campaign.

The midfielder was pictured holding up a Celtic shirt last week, leading to rumours of a cross-Glasgow switch materialising.

The Latest: Debut goal for Dickson

Dickson actually turned out for Celtic against Morton in the SPFL Trust Trophy on Saturday, as reported by The Scottish Sun.

Wearing the number 10 jersey, he scored on his debut after 30 minutes to halve a 2-0 deficit for his team.

Celtic went on to lose 3-1, but it seems as if Dominic McKay may have sealed an under-the-radar addition to the club’s youth ranks in Dickson, with a tweet from the club’s B team account labelling the 19-year-old as a new signing.

The Verdict: Shrewd move?

Dickson is a player who clearly caught the eye of Gerrard last season and was of interest to Premier League side Burnley, so a cut-price move to Celtic Park seems to be a smart piece of business from McKay.

The Hoops appears to be building for the future with the signings of youngsters Liel Abada, Liam Shaw, Liam Scales, Osaze Urhoghide and Joey Dawson, and it looks as if Dickson can now be added to that list judging by his B team appearances over the weekend.
