Wolves transfer update on Edouard

Some Wolves fans have been left buzzing as a transfer update emerged on Odsonne Edouard.

As per The Daily Telegraph, the Midlands club are one of a number of teams in the Premier League that have considered signing the Celtic striker in the summer window, along with Leicester City, West Ham United, Brighton and Hove Albion and Crystal Palace.

Edouard is a player who is likely looking to make the step up from the Scottish Premiership, having scored no fewer than 22 goals and supplied a further six assists in 40 games in total over all competitions across the 2020/21 season (Transfermarkt).

Nonetheless, the Molineux faithful could do with another experienced player up top to cover or play alongside Raul Jimenez, and the French 23-year-old may well fit the bill.

Manchester City: Fans react to Pape Matar Sarr update

Metz midfielder Pape Matar Sarr is ‘much more likely’ to end up at Manchester City than Manchester United this window, as reported by journalist Jonathan Shrager on Twitter.

Enjoying an encouraging campaign in 2020/21, the 18-year-old managed to amass four goals from 26 appearances in all competitions in France [Transfermarkt].

Now, he could pitch up in the blue half of Manchester this window following recent reports.

Speaking to his audience on Twitter, Shrager signified that it is far more foreseeable that the anchor man would move to the Etihad over Old Trafford in the near future.

Reports also suggest that they could acquire the Senegal international then immediately loan him back to Metz for the rest of 2021/22 [City Xtra].

In light of these developments, no wonder loads of Manchester City fans took to Twitter to react to the prospect of signing the youngster.

Sri Lanka prove too strong for Bangladesh

Scorecard and ball-by-ball details
How they were out

Sanath Jayasuriya and Kumar Sangakkara ran the Bangladesh attack ragged with a superb opening partnership © AFP

Mohammad Ashraful was left to rue his decision at the toss – on the sort of pitch where they had piled 300-plus the previous day, Bangladesh decided to field first and paid a heavy price as Sri Lanka, fired by some superb top-order batting by Kumar Sangakkara and Sanath Jayasuriya, piled a massive target before inflicting a heavy defeat.Chasing an insurmountable target, Bangladesh never seemed like waging a battle although a fourth-wicket stand of 78 between Mushfiqur Rahim and Raqibul Hasan played a major hand in delaying the inevitable. For a while the duo played with patience, character even tackled smartly the spin of Ajantha Mendis and Muttiah Muralitharan. But eventually, Muralitharan got the better of their grit, effectively ending the Bangladesh fight.Earlier the responsibility, once again, fell on Ashraful to play the multiple role of anchor, hustler and finisher. Yesterday, Ashraful had scored a composed century. Today, after his top edge was spilled by Jayasuriya, Ashraful went for a brash pull against a short ball from Dilhara Fernando. The umpire Simon Taufel thought the ball had brushed his gloves but the batsman started his walk with disbelief. If Bangladesh meandered towards defeat, Sri Lanka always seemed formidable with the bat. Such was the dominance of the Sri Lankans that rarely did their run rate drop below seven. Much of the credit went to the opening pair of Jayasuriya and Sangakkara, who quickly got into the groove once they had gauged that they had nothing to fear from the bowling or the pitch. What unfolded over the next hour was a spectacular batting display that resulted in a 116-run opening partnership, which was the perfect platform for the other batsmen to build on.It didn’t matter that this was the first time in two years the pair went out to open. After the World Cup, this was the seventh pair Sri Lanka had tried out and it proved decisive as it was the first century opening partnership since the 2006-07 New Zealand tour where Jayasuriya had successfully paired with Upul Tharanga. As Sangakkara caressed the ball to the boundary from close to his body, Jayasuriya cut hard, charged, pulled and hit at everything. Dolar Mahumud suffered the worst carnage as his second over was taken for 25 runs by Jayasuriya, which included two spectacular cuts on his toes past the point boundary.Bangladesh’s bowling was erratic to say the least. Apart from the dependable Mashrafe Mortaza and the left-arm spin of Abdur Razzak, the rest of the bowlers never stuck to the thumb rule of bowling to the fields. Time and again, Ashraful rushed to his bowlers, but as Sri Lanka’s final total indicated, that didn’t do much good.Sangakkara took command after Jayasuriya departed, bowled trying to cut Razzak’s spin. One of the highlights of the innings came in the 20th over, as Sangakkara clobbered five fours off Mahmud. The first ball was a wide, while the next one was smacked low by Sangakkara past mid-off. The next, a slower one, was swept to long leg for another boundary, after which he smacked one over the bowler’s head for the third four. Mahmud had a chance to make amends, but made a mess of a caught-and-bowled chance the next ball. Sangakkara celebrated by sending the last two balls – both of which drifted down the leg side – for fours as well to speed towards his eighth ODI hundred and the second this year.He accomplished that feat by pushing a single off legspinner Alok Kapali, whose first two balls were pulled for consecutive fours. He fell soon after, though – increasingly tired in the energy sapping heat, he miscued a pull to give Mahmudullah his only wicket. But Chamara Kapugedera made sure the momentum was never lost, as he piled an intelligent 74, stitching important partnerships with Chamara Silva and Tillakaratne Dilshan. He was especially severe on Kapali, regularly stepping down the pitch to loft.Sri Lanka now have the leisure of rotating the line-up in tomorrow’s final group-stage clash against UAE, while Bangladesh will enter the second round with mixed feelings.

Celtic: Liam Scales talks at advanced stage

Celtic’s talks with Shamrock Rovers for defender Liam Scales are thought to be at an advanced stage, according to Glasgow Live.

The Lowdown: Scales links

Initial links to Scales came out last week, with The Irish Mirror’s Paul O’Hehir one of the first to share discussions between the two clubs for the 23-year-old.

Scales, who was described as ‘really, really good’ by Rovers manager Stephen Bradley, admitted recently that he could be on the move before the transfer window slams shut, with Norwich City and Southampton also thought to be keen on his services.

The Irish Examiner’s John Fallon believes that Celtic could have to pay a ‘significant’ six-figure sum for Scales, and it seems as if transfer talks are progressing well.

The Latest: Advanced stages

Glasgow Live shared a transfer story on reported Celtic target Fabricio Bustos on Monday evening.

Within their report, they dropped a line on Scales, stating that talks between the Glasgow giants and Shamrock Rovers are at an advanced stage.

The Verdict: Desmond’s deal?

Dermot Desmond has a 25% stake in the Irish champions, so perhaps the Celtic chief has helped talks to progress in the past week.

Should Scales arrive at Parkhead, he would offer Ange Postecoglou plenty of versatility. Last season, the Republic of Ireland under-21 international made 10 appearances in his primary centre-back position, 12 as a left-midfielder, one as a left-back and one as a defensive midfielder.

He also showed his goalscoring knack with a crucial last-gasp winner over Longford Town at the weekend, a result which maintained Rovers’ three-point lead in the League of Ireland Premier Division and ensured a happy 23rd birthday for the defender.

He may not be an instant starter, should he sign for Celtic, but over time he could prove a key member of the squad in a number of positions.

West Ham fans unhappy at Areola update

Many West Ham United fans are far from happy after reliable club insider ExWHUemployee revealed that there is a long way to go before the Hammers complete a move for Alphonse Areola.

The Irons enjoyed a magnificent 2020/21 campaign as they finished sixth in the Premier League, which means they will be competing in the Europa League this season. However, they have not had the best transfer window so far, with no new senior additions brought in this summer.

West Ham have been linked with a move for Areola, but while they are still in for the goalkeeper, ExWHUemployee tweeted in response to a supporter’s query about the 28-year-old: “That is still on. But still some distance to go if it is completed”.

Given that Areola is one of nine goalkeepers on the books at Paris Saint-Germain, it should not be so hard to complete an agreement.

ExWHUemployee’s update about the French ‘keeper attracted plenty of attention from West Ham supporters, many of whom were glum over how the transfer link is progressing.

Let’s see what these fans had to say about the update on Areola

SPCL 1 – Bournemouth end B.A.T. winning sequence

Bournemouth have ended BAT Sports’ amazing run of 15 successive "all day" victories and enabled Havant to reduce the deficit at the top of the ECB Southern Electric Premier League to 16 points

Mike Vimpany (as published in Daily Echo)28-Jul-2002Bournemouth have ended BAT Sports’ amazing run of 15 successive "all day" victories and enabled Havant to reduce the deficit at the top of the ECB Southern Electric Premier League to 16 points.Leaders BAT, who had previously won every `time’ match they had played since early June 2001, were held to a draw by Bournemouth at Chapel Gate.Whereas Havant whipped Andover by eight wickets to remain second in the all too familiar two-horse championship race.BAT, bowled out for 218 in the last of their 66 overs, were forced on to the defensive as Bournemouth moved to 139-2. But, after receiving 54 overs back from the champions, Bournemouth closed at 162-6.BAT’s top order thrived, with Damian Shirazi (48) featuring in useful partnerships with Richard Kenway (36) and Dave Banks (59), who was eventually run out at 165-3.Michael Watson (43) prospered as Chris Haniff (4-27) celebrated his first team call up with a useful nine-over spell and left-arm spinner Tom Webley (2-36) produced a containing 14-over spell. The pair caused BAT to slip from 165-3 to 187-9 before Watson’s last-wicket rally with Dan Goldstraw yielded 28 precious runs and took the defending champions on to 218 all out.Goldstraw picked up his 33rd victim of the season when he had Webley snapped up at slip. But Bournemouth, through Matt Swarbrick (33), got back into the reckoning … until the wicket-hungry left-armer struck again at 47-2.Martin Miller, who finished unbeaten on 62, and Geoff Warrington (43) led Bournemouth on to 139-2.But Goldstraw, whose lengthy 21-over spell yielded figures of 4-38, probably ended Bournemouth’s challenge when he had Warrington caught behind.Terry Rawlins (2-24) achieved two more breakthroughs, but BAT were never likely to force a result as Bournemouth closed on 162-6."I thought they were too defensive – they had `sweepers’ out very early – and kept Dan Goldstraw on far too long," criticised Bournemouth skipper Swarbrick. The check in BAT’s unrelenting march towards a second consecutive league title at least enabled Havant to close the gap at the top. They beat Andover by eight wickets, with Roger Miller hitting a century – and then pulling a hamstring while he was bowling !Miller hit 100 of Andover’s 214-8 and was supported by Ian Gardner (36) and latterly Richard Taylor (20 not out), with left-arm spinner Phil Loat picking up 3-57.But, with Miller limping out of the attack, Havant openers Andy Perry (49) and Dominic Carson thrived, Andover relying on a large slice of spin bowling.Leg spinner Martin Docis (2-58) achieved two breakthroughs, but was unable to contain either Carson (89) or Bev Moynan (51 not out) whose unbroken century partnership guided Havant home.Burridge slipped even farther behind Liphook & Ripsley in the relegation mire after suffering an onslaught from Bashley-Rydal’s Western Australian prodigy Luke Ronchi. The 21-year old Perth batsman cracked an undefeated 126 as Bashley soared past Burridge’s 208-7 in only 30 overs. Ronchi and Neil Thurgood (52 not out) put on almost 200 for the second wicket.Ian Williamson had earlier made 83 as Burridge recovered from early blows by John Whiting (4-36) at 54-3 to reach 208-7 in 60 overs.Moeen Cheema (35) and Dave Jackson (20) offered support, but it was not enough to spare Burridge another defeat.Burridge’s dilemma worsened when Liphook & Ripsley eked out eight points from a drawn match with Calmore Sports at Ripsley Park. It looked at one stage as though Liphook would win handsomely.Calmore sank to a depressing 29-4 and later 57-5, but were revived by a face-saving century from skipper Tom Pegler (100), whose late order stands with Paul Cass (31) and John Wall (40 not out) lifted the visitors to 235-8 (Glen Read 3-49).The sedate pace of South African Alistair Gray (58), who departed at 140-4, held back Liphook’s bid for victory.Michael Smyth (35), Nick Gay (27), Neil Randall (23) and Jeremy Bulled (23) pushed Liphook’s reply to 193-4, but time ran out at 209-8.

Mark Waugh voices concerns over Pakistan tour

MELBOURNE, Aug 8 AAP – Australia Test cricketer Mark Waugh today echoed his brother Steve’s reservations about touring Pakistan in October after the latest violence.

AAP08-Aug-2002MELBOURNE, Aug 8 AAP – Australia Test cricketer Mark Waugh today echoed his brother Steve’s reservations about touring Pakistan in October after the latest violence.Six Pakistanis were shot dead in an attack on a school for children of foreign missionaries near Islamabad on Monday.”Obviously what happened two days ago with the shooting at the international school puts a few more question marks over the tour,” Waugh told Melbourne radio station Sport 927 today.”There’s no doubt about that. I think the ACB (Australian Cricket Board) would be first to admit that.”Several other senior players have also expressed reservations about the tour.On Tuesday, Test captain Steve Waugh said he would be happy to go to Pakistan if it was deemed safe, but stressed the players would rely on information from other sources.”I think every one (of the players) would have some slight reservations after what’s happened in the past, it’s only natural,” Steve said.”You’ve really got to be guided by High Commissions and those places tell you what the feeling is, whether it’s safe for tourists to go there.”If it’s deemed safe enough to go, then I’m quite happy to go, but if they say it’s not then the (Australian Cricket Board) will make that decision (not to go).”New Zealand pulled out of its Pakistan tour in May after a bomb near its hotel killed 14 people in Karachi.ACB spokesman Pat O’Beirne said the latest attack “adds some currency” to advice the board is receiving from Australian Government officials and the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB).”The tragic recent incident has increased concern about the tour,” O’Beirne said today.”We will continue to monitor our information over the next short while.”
