Domestic season starts on September 21

The top three teams from Group A and B, and the top two from Group C, will qualify for the quarter-finals of the upcoming season of the Ranji Trophy

ESPNcricinfo staff20-Jul-2012The 2012-13 domestic season will begin with the Irani Cup in Jaipur, between September 21-25. The revamped Ranji Trophy will start on November 2, with the knockouts scheduled for January 2013. The top three teams from Group A and B, and the top two from Group C, will qualify for the quarter-finals of the Ranji Trophy. The Irani Cup will be followed by the NKP Salve Challenger Trophy, a limited-overs tournament involving Bengal – the winners of the Vijay Hazare Trophy last season – and two other teams, and the inter-zonal Duleep Trophy, in October.Ranji Trophy groups

Group A: Rajasthan, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Madhya Pradesh, Saurashtra, Railways, Bengal, Punjab, Gujarat
Group B: Tamil Nadu, Haryana, Maharashtra, Karnataka, Uttar Pradesh, Vidarbha, Delhi, Baroda, Odisha
Group C: Himachal Pradesh, Kerala, Andhra Pradesh, Services, Tripura, Goa, Jharkhand, Jammu and Kashmir, Assam

Twenty-seven Ranji teams have been divided into three groups of nine each. Defending champions Rajasthan are part of Group A, together with three other teams – Mumbai, Hyderabad and Madhya Pradesh – who qualified for the knockouts the previous season. Group B includes the runners-up Tamil Nadu, as well as Haryana, Maharashtra and Karnataka who made it to the knockouts last year. Each of the nine teams in Group C played in the Plate League last year.”The initial plan was to have the top teams in one group but we decided to divide them to have two groups of more or less equal strength,” Ratnakar Shetty, the chief administrative officer of the BCCI, told ESPNcricinfo. “We put those semi-finalists who didn’t play each other last season in one group this time.” Rajasthan and Haryana, who played the first semi-final last season, are in different groups, so are Mumbai and Tamil Nadu. The selection for the other two teams of the NKP Salve Challenger Trophy, Shetty added, will be held roughly a week before the competition. From next year onwards, the Irani Cup will be played after the Ranji Trophy. The season will end with the remaining limited-overs tournaments: the Vijay Hazare Trophy, the Deodhar Trophy and finally, the Twenty20 Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy. The decision to adopt the current format for the domestic season was taken by the BCCI’s working committee earlier this month, together with the approval to allow two bouncers an over in limited-overs matches and permit one bowler to bowl a maximum of 12 overs in a 50-over game. The proposals to tweak the rules and the format were made by the BCCI’s technical committee, headed by Sourav Ganguly, earlier in the year.

ICC ponders lbw change for switch hits

The ICC is to review the playing condition regarding lbw decisions in international cricket in response to the emergence of the switch hit

George Dobell09-May-2012The ICC is to review the playing condition regarding lbw decisions in international cricket in response to the emergence of the switch hit.ESPNcricinfo understands that the ICC cricket committee, a group that includes Ian Bishop, Kumar Sangakkara and Mark Taylor, is to consider amending the playing condition whereby a batsman attempting to play the shot cannot be given out lbw if the ball has pitched outside the leg stump. The news, first mentioned in passing in , will mean that any right-handed batsman who switches his stance or grip to effectively play as a left-hander, will be able to be given out even if the ball had pitched outside the leg stump and vice-versa. Bowlers will also be allowed more leeway as regards leg side wides in limited-overs cricket. The cricket committee meets in Dubai later this month. While any recommendations cannot come into force until they are ratified by the ICC board and the ICC’s chief executives’ committee, it is unlikely that the cricket committee’s proposals would be ignored. The decision will not affect the laws of the game, which are governed by the MCC, leading to the possibility that playing conditions in first-class cricket around the world will differ from playing conditions in the international game. It is up to each national board to determine whether to adopt the ICC’s playing conditions in their domestic cricket. While some boards – including those in Sri Lanka and South Africa – tend to default to the ICC stance, others – such as the ECB – are more independent minded. At present the major differences between ICC playing regulations and MCC laws concern the rules regarding the degree of flexion bowlers are allowed, the use of runners and decisions relating to the DRS.The MCC is also considering the repercussions of the more regular use of the switch hit stroke. Two members of the MCC’s laws subcommittee – Dave Richardson and John Stephenson – also sit on the ICC Cricket Committee. The switch hit first came to prominence in 2008 when Kevin Pietersen played it in an ODI against New Zealand in Durham. The same batsman was involved when matters came to a head in a Test in Sri Lanka recently when Tillakaratne Dilshan pulled out of his delivery stride on several occasions as Pietersen shaped to play the shot and the stand-off threatened to reach stalemate. The umpires, Asad Rauf and Bruce Oxenford, warned Pietersen for time-wasting, but the ICC is now looking for a more permanent solution. The ICC will be keen not to encourage negative bowling, however. The shot is sometimes played, even at Test level, to counter a leg stump line from right-hand bowlers coming round the wicket and many feel that the switch hit, a shot requiring high skill levels and remarkable reflexes, has been an entertaining addition to the game. It may also be that the ICC asks for some analysis as regards the risk-reward ratio of the shot and whether its usage really does disadvantage bowlers.Any amendment to the playing conditions is likely to prove torturously difficult to phrase. For a start, it could prove tough to define exactly what constitutes a switch hit – whether it involves a change of stance, a change of grip and when they take place. It is worth noting that the ICC, reacting to David Warner’s decision to remain in his normal left-handed stance but with a right-handed grip, issued a directive to umpires in February 2010 that stated such a tactic should be tolerated as long as it did not change once the bowler had begun their run up. As things stand the laws do not define what it means to bat left- or right-handed.Fraser Stewart, MCC’s Laws Manager, recently raised an interesting quandary. “What would happen,” Stewart asked, “if a batsman stood chest on to the bowler? If may sound a ludicrous suggestion now, but we have a generation of young cricketers growing up playing the switch hit and prepared to experiment with their stance and their grip. It may well happen.”

Injury worries for East, Central on green track

For a tournament that comprises four games between five entities called ‘zones’, making them assemble teams that are together for barely three weeks, the Duleep Trophy still attracts its share of attention. It is perceived by some as having become irrelevant in a packed domestic season; others say it is still the gold standard for domestic cricket. It is the only tournament in which the Kookaburra ball is used, as opposed to the SG which is the norm in India. One thing is clear though. The Duleep Trophy has been, and largely still is, a showcase of the country’s best domestic talent. The finalists this time, Central Zone and East Zone, have their share of fringe India players like Wriddhiman Saha and Piyush Chawla, and past stars like Mohammad Kaif. They have the first-class season’s top three wicket-takers – Ashok Dinda, TP Sudhindra and Pankaj Singh. They have the top two run-getters – Robin Bist and Vineet Saxena. A couple of national selectors are expected to watch the game. This is the final chance for Test hopefuls to get noticed before the season descends into a spate of state one-dayers, zonal one-dayers, state Twenty20s … all climaxing into the clutter of the IPL.Both sides are banking on their fast bowlers, with the grassy Indore pitch looking a complete contrast to the lifeless strip that made for a sleepy Ranji Trophy final in Chennai last month. Chawla, the Central Zone captain, remarked on how green the surface appeared – an unusual sight in India, except when a desperate home team dishes out green tops in search of an outright win.Indications were that the grass would stay tomorrow. It did for the Ranji quarter-final between Madhya Pradesh and Mumbai in January. The visitors saw the grass, the overcast conditions and the cold weather, and chose to bowl. Fifteen wickets fell on the first day, two on the second, six on the third, and one on the fourth. Mukesh Sahni, the MP coach, had said then that despite all the green cover, the pitch tends to ease out on the second day, and becomes good for batting. The surface was looking dry beneath the grass, with the afternoon sun beating down hard.Samundar Singh Chauhan, the curator, said that the pitch for this game had more live grass compared to the one for the Ranji quarter-final. Seemingly, Central – who have several MP players for whom this is a home ground – would bowl if they won the toss.Chawla said that this being a five-day game, sides always had a chance to come back even if they did poorly in the first innings. A five-day game also leaves a side with a huge disadvantage if one of the bowlers gets injured, which is why Central were worried about the fitness of Pankaj. The fast bowler was feeling stiffness in his shoulder, though he practised without any visible discomfort. Chawla said Pankaj had a 70% chance of playing; Rituraj Singh will take his Rajasthan team-mate’s place if Pankaj is ruled out tomorrow morning.East were also hit by an injury to one of their fast bowlers. Debashish Mohanty, the East coach, said that Abu Nechim had been ruled out. One of Bengal’s Shami Ahmed or Tripura’s Rana Dutta will replace Nechim.Mohanty was understandably confident about his side’s chances, with East having beaten West outright by five wickets in the quarter-final and then North on the first-innings lead in the semi-finals.East have historically been the weakest side in the Duleep Trophy and are the only zone never to have won the tournament. Of the four other zones, Central have won the least number of times. Both sides would feel this is their best chance.

India seal series in stiff run-chase

MS Dhoni was India’s matchwinner once again, as he marshalled an asking-rate approaching ten an over to seal an unassailable 3-0 series lead in the third ODI at Mohali

The Report by Andrew Miller20-Oct-2011 India 300 for 5 (Rahane 91) beat England 298 for 4 (Trott 98*, Patel 70*) by five wickets
Scorecard and ball-by-ball detailsMS Dhoni finished the match off in typical style•AFPMS Dhoni was India’s matchwinner once again, as he marshalled an asking-rate approaching ten an over to seal an unassailable 3-0 series lead in the third ODI at Mohali. With Ravindra Jadeja alongside him, he clubbed Tim Bresnan for consecutive boundaries in the final over of the match to finish unbeaten on 35 from 31 balls, as England’s best total of the series – 298 for 4 – proved insufficient to keep the series alive. It was a sloppy fielding display from England in a match they could and should have won. Their own total had been built on another sheet-anchor performance from Jonathan Trott, who finished unbeaten on 98 from 116 balls, but the point-of-difference innings had been played by Samit Patel, whose career-best 70 from 43 balls enabled England to add 91 runs in their final ten overs. Given the history of chasing at Mohali – only five teams had previously managed it in 19 matches at the venue – their route back into the series was awaiting them.Instead, they produced a listless defence, with Ajinkya Rahane cruising along to 91 from 104 balls in a second-wicket stand of 111 with Gautam Gambhir. They managed just one wicket in the first 34 overs – a marginal lbw against Parthiv Patel, which broke an opening partnership of 79 – and though they rallied well to claim four wickets in an eight-over spell of dominance, their failure to take their chances cost them dear in the closing stages. The most culpable man was the wicketkeeper, Craig Kieswetter, who missed an early chance to remove Gambhir on 17, before dropping Virat Kohli off a Jade Dernbach bouncer at a crucial juncture. Kohli had been struggling to impose himself and should have gone for 4 from 12 balls, only for Kieswetter to spill the catch as his elbows hit the turf. Worse was to follow, however, when he trod on the stumps while attempting to run out Jadeja with 12 balls of the match remaining, and 17 runs still needed. That final error unsettled the under-pressure bowler Dernbach, who had earlier shown his frustration when Tim Bresnan let a four fly through his legs at backward point. He finished his spell with a wide and a no-ball beamer in an over that went for 10 runs, moments after Steven Finn – who had bowled superbly to concede 31 runs from his first nine overs – had been battered for 13 runs in his tenth.Regardless of England’s shortcomings, it was another hugely impressive display from India’s batsmen, with Rahane setting the game up superbly with the second half-century of his fledgling career. He picked off six fours in his innings – mostly through deft steers behind square – but the most telling feature of his innings was the ease with which he and Gambhir rotated the strike in the fallow middle overs. England were powerless to react as the gaps in their field were pinched at will, and it wasn’t until a rare misjudgement from Gambhir led to an impressive one-handed catch from Kevin Pietersen at cover that they found a foothold in the game. That wicket was due reward for another probing and pacey spell from Finn, and he doubled his tally three overs later when Rahane’s quest for a maiden hundred ended in a leading edge to Alastair Cook at mid-off. Suresh Raina then drilled Bresnan to cover for a third-ball duck to tilt the balance of power firmly in England’s direction, and when Kohli was trapped lbw by a sharp turner from Graeme Swann, India had slumped to 235 for 5 with nine overs remaining, and that target of 299 suddenly seemed a long way off. In the end though, Dhoni and Jadeja picked it off with aplomb.England owed their shot at victory to another solipsistic performance from Trott, whose tempo is immoveable regardless of the format of the game. This was his first significant innings since being named the ICC Cricketer of the Year, and it was a reprisal of the role he had played at the World Cup in March. He picked off eight boundaries after coming to the crease in the fourth over of the innings following the loss of Cook for 3, and was denied his fourth ODI hundred by a sharp piece of fielding at short fine leg, when he paddle-swept the penultimate ball of the innings for a single. Though he missed out on his milestone, the net gain was England’s, as Samit Patel blazed Vinay Kumar’s final ball of the innings into the long-on stands for six.The debate will rage about Trott’s approach to one-day cricket, but seeing as England collapsed in a heap in the first two matches, the backbone he provided to this performance was self-evident. Both of his major partners – Pietersen, who made 64 from 61 balls, and Patel – thrived on the right to go for their strokes, with Patel instrumental in belting 43 runs from the final 24 deliveries of England’s innings. With his place under threat after two inconsequential displays in the early part of the series, this was a timely reminder of his combative qualities, as he was pushed up to No. 6 ahead of Jonny Bairstow.Pietersen, meanwhile, produced his best one-day innings for many a month. He and Trott came together with England wobbling on 53 for 2, but the pair soon settled into a comfortable accumulative rhythm. Pietersen glanced his second ball through fine leg for four, and later launched a calculated assault on the swing of Praveen Kumar, who was bludgeoned for four fours in consecutive overs. He had a familiar aberration when the left-arm spin of Jadeja entered the attack, and would have run his partner out for 32 had the shy from midwicket been anywhere near Dhoni’s gloves. As it transpired, however, it was England’s own failure to run out Jadeja later in the game that would prove to be the decisive error.

Yorkshire pile up huge total

Former England batsman Anthony McGrath scored a century for Yorkshire as bottom-placed Hampshire endured another miserable day in the field at the Rose Bowl

McGrath recorded the 33rd hundred of his first-class career as the visitors made the most of batting first on an easy-paced wicket to amass a first-innings total of 532.In response, Hampshire, needing 383 to avoid the follow-on, then lost openers Liam Dawson and Jimmy Adams with only 59 on the board. But Michael Carberry, fit again after blood clot problems, and Neil McKenzie took their side through to the close at 116 for 2, still 416 behind.Yorkshire resumed at the start of the second day on 318 for 3 with McGrath 65 not out. With Gary Ballance as his fourth-wicket partner, the pair put on 157 in 47 overs as Hampshire quickly ran out of ideas.Hampshire’s cause was not helped by the loss of their captain Dominic Cork with a shin injury, and in his place Hampshire were obliged to use spinners Danny Briggs and Imran Tahir for the majority of Yorkshire’s innings of almost 172 overs.Of those, Tahir and Briggs bowled more than 100 and took eight of the wickets, Tahir finishing with 6 for 132 and Briggs taking 2 for 127.The fourth wicket partnership came to a conclusion at 361 when Ballance was bowled by Briggs, but McGrath went on to bat for almost five and a half hours for his 115 before he drove Sean Ervine to Adams at mid-wicket.Even in McGrath’s absence, there was no let-up for Hampshire as Gerard Brophy made a rapid half-century while Adil Rashid drove freely for his 38. Brophy eventually fell to a smart return catch by Tahir diving to his left after making 53, while Rashid was snared at slip as the spinners at last got some response.Hampshire faced a daunting task just to keep the match alive after almost two days in the field, but at 38 they lost Dawson to a catch at the wicket off Ryan Sidebottom. Adams made 29 before he edged left-arm spinner David Wainwright also to wicketkeeper Brophy. At that stage Hampshire were threatening to drop into trouble, but Carberry and McKenzie (30no) at least prevented any further setbacks in the evening session. Carberry, in only his third first-class match back following his illness, showed signs of returning to form with seven boundaries in his unbeaten 37.

Celtic dealt injury blow ahead of Hearts

Celtic are back in action on Saturday afternoon as they are set to take on Hearts for their latest test in the Premiership.

Having missed out on the chance to pick up another three points against their Old Firm rivals last weekend, Ange Postecoglou will be hoping to see his team secure victory this time out.

However, heading into tomorrow’s clash, it seems as though the Hoops have been dealt a setback which could hamper their chances of getting the win on this occasion.

What’s the news?

Speaking in his latest press conference ahead of his side’s trip to Parkhead, Hearts manager Robbie Neilson revealed that John Souttar, Cammy Devlin and Michael Smith will be in contention to play tomorrow after being involved in the club’s recent training session.

According to the Daily Record, Souttar has not featured for the club since March after undergoing surgery on an ankle problem, while Smith has been out of action since February. As for Devlin, his hamstring issue kept him out of last weekend’s draw with Ross County, but will now be fit enough for selection against Celtic.

Despite the trio being rather defensive-minded players, all three have found the net at least once in the league this season. In fact, the trio have scored a combined total of seven league goals, showing how much of an attacking threat they can be.

Focusing on Devlin, in particular, the fact that he has the highest number of tackles (50) and interceptions (38) to his name at the club highlights what a difficult figure he is to play against.

Worrying news for Postecoglou

Taking all this into account, it could be worrying for Postecoglou and Celtic to potentially see these players make a return for Hearts tomorrow and possibly hinder his team’s chances of picking up a victory which would take them to the brink of being crowned champions.

With the Bhoys having the best attacking record in the league having scored 81 goals in 35 games, the Hoops management and supporters will be hoping that their players will have what it takes to overcome their Edinburgh opponents and secure a positive result, irrespective of Neilson’s men welcoming back several important players.

Predicted Spurs XI vs Leicester

Tottenham Hotspur return to Premier League action this afternoon and the north London outfit will be looking to maintain ground in the race for a top-four finish.

The Lilywhites have slipped up in recent outings, picking up just a point from Brentford and Brighton, and it has allowed their arch-rivals, Arsenal, to gain an advantage with the Gunners sat two points clear in fourth position.

Antonio Conte’s side can put pressure on their fierce foes as they don’t play until later, travelling to West Ham this evening.

It will be interesting to see what sort of side the Italian names for this encounter, not at least because they struggled to create anything of note against Christian Eriksen’s Bees last time out.

[snack-amp-story url= “https://www.footballfancast.com/web-stories/read-the-latest-spurs-news-transfer-rumours-gossip-levy-conte-paratici-thfc” title= “Read the latest Spurs news!”]

Here’s the XI we are predicting today…

Goalkeeper: Hugo Lloris is likely to remain between the sticks as trusted no.1 and club captain.

Back three: This area is also set to be unaltered, meaning impressive Atalanta loanee Cristian Romero continues alongside Eric Dier – the middle of the three – and left-back Ben Davies.

Left wing-back: In the absence of Sergio Reguilon, who Conte confirmed as being absent for this clash during his pre-game press conference, the Italian will only be able to depend upon Ryan Sessegnon.

Right wing-back: Given Emerson’s persistent struggles in the role and Matt Doherty’s season-ending injury, it wouldn’t be a surprise to see a bold call on the right. One player capable of featuring here is Dejan Kulusevski, who has averaged 1.2 tackles and 0.8 interceptions per game, only 0.2 and 0.1 off of the Irishman.

“Also Dejan Kulusevski can play as a wing-back,” claimed the Italian head coach ahead of kick-off.

Central midfield: This is another area that is likely to go unscathed, with both Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and January arrival Rodrigo Bentancur marshalling the engine room once again.

Left wing: Heung-min Son will keep his place on the left, playing just off the striker, as normal.

Right wing: With the 22-year-old Sweden international in a new role, we could see a rare start for Lucas Moura, who has previously been dubbed a “nightmare” to train against by his teammate, Dier. The £18m-rated Brazilian lost his place to Kuluseveski but may earn a chance to impress today.

It would be his first start since February, some 12 games ago.

Striker: Harry Kane is undroppable at this point, so we can expect the England talisman to remain.

Predicted Spurs XI (3-4-2-1): Lloris; Davies, Dier, Romero; Sessegnon, Hojbjerg, Bentancur, Kulusevski; Son, Moura; Kane.
