Leeds: Whites had mare over 2023 exit with more G/A than Summerville this year

Leeds United endured a dismal 2022/23 campaign as they were relegated from the Premier League after three seasons at the top level.

The Whites were promoted under Marcelo Bielsa in 2020 and enjoyed two seasons of survival before eventually going down under a combination of Jesse Marsch, Javi Gracia, and Sam Allardyce.

They are now back in the Championship and are looking to return to the top-flight at the first time of asking, with German head coach Daniel Farke at the helm.

Leeds boss Daniel Farke.

Leeds brought the former Norwich City and Borussia Monchengladbach boss in to bolster their chances of promotion and he has enjoyed a strong start to life in Yorkshire, with five wins and two defeats in 11 league outings.

A drop down to the second tier has afforded a number of players the opportunity to regain form and confidence at a lower level and one ace who could have benefitted from that was central midfielder Mateusz Klich, who left the club in January.

The Poland international moved on at the start of the year and former Whites boss Marsch seemingly had a mare with his decision to part ways with the talented gem, as he has more goals and assists than some of the club's current attackers – like Crysencio Summerville – this year.

How much did Leeds sell Klich for?

Leeds did not receive a single penny in return for Klich as they opted to release him from his contract, despite having 18 months left to run on his deal at the time.

Marsch stated that it was a mutual decision as the club allowed the central midfielder to move on from the then-Premier League side for £0 after he had made 14 top-flight appearances during the first half of the campaign.

The veteran maestro was then able to complete a transfer to D.C. United, who were managed by Wayne Rooney at the time of the move, on a free transfer in January.

How many goals did Klich score for Leeds?

He racked up 24 goals in 195 appearances for the Whites in all competitions during his time in England, which began after a switch from FC Twente ahead of the 2017/18 campaign.

The 33-year-old dynamo spent time on loan with FC Utrecht in his first season with Leeds before making his breakthrough as a regular under Bielsa the following term.

Klich exploded onto the scene with a phenomenal 2018/19 campaign as the club fell just shy of the play-off final. He contributed with ten goals and eight assists in 46 Championship starts from a midfield position.

The Polish whiz only missed two 'big chances' and created nine of them for his teammates, which shows that he was ruthless in front of goal and had the quality to provide his fellow attackers with excellent opportunities at the top end of the pitch.

He followed that up with six goals and five assists in 45 league starts throughout the 2019/20 season as Bielsa led the side to a Championship title and promotion to the Premier League. Klich only recorded five assists in spite of ending the campaign with ten 'big chances' created, which suggests that his teammates let him down in the final third.

The former Twente ace was then able to make the step up to the top-flight as he chipped in with four goals and five assists in 28 starts in his first year at that level.

After 18 more months in the Premier League with Leeds, Klich moved on from England with 24 goals and 21 assists in his 195 appearances.

How has Klich performed for D.C. United?

The 33-year-old gem has enjoyed a fantastic year in the MLS since his switch to America in January, with a string of impressive performances in midfield.

Klich has hit the ground running for D.C. United and has proved himself to be a consistent attacking threat from the middle of the park.

The veteran wizard has contributed with four goals and seven assists in 32 MLS outings throughout 2023, which shows that the talented ace is getting back to the impressive form that he displayed under Bielsa earlier in his Leeds career.

He has only missed one 'big chance' and has showcased his terrific creativity with 2.5 key passes per game, as per Sofascore, and no Leeds player has managed more per match this term.

How many goals has Summerville scored this year?

Meanwhile, Summerville has scored three goals for Leeds over the course of 2023, whilst playing in the Premier League and the Championship.

He racked up one goal and one assist in 19 appearances in all competitions from January until the end of the 2022/23 campaign as the Dutch ace struggled to find consistency at the top level.

Leeds forward Crysencio Summerville.

The 21-year-old wizard has contributed with two goals and two assists in nine outings so far this season under Farke, which mean that he has produced three goals and three assists in 28 matches in total this year.

This is five fewer goal contributions than Klich, who plays in a central midfield role, has managed in 2023, despite playing out on the wing.

Summerville is not the only Leeds attacker with fewer goals and assists than the Poland international in that time, though, as Italian winger Wilfried Gnonto has three goal and five assists in 28 games in all competitions for Leeds this year.

Was it a mistake to move Klich on?

These statistics suggest that Marsch had a mare by allowing Klich, who Rooney hailed as a "leader", to move on from the club on a free transfer in January as the talented maestro could have been a big player at Championship level this season.

His form in the MLS suggests that the 33-year-old technician still has the quality to make a big impact at the top end of the pitch from a midfield position, with goals, assists, and key passes.

He has been able to outperform exciting attackers like Summerville and Gnonto throughout 2023 and it is a shame that Farke did not get the opportunity to work with the former Eredivisie star at Elland Road this term.

West Ham: Moyes was rinsed by "disappointing" dud who cost £5m per goal

West Ham United look to be on the route to brighter days under David Moyes, after their struggles during the 2022/23 Premier League campaign.

Last season, the Hammers flirted with relegation at times, however the lows of their league form were quickly forgotten thanks to their historic win of the Europa Conference League in May.

Moyes delivered the east Londoners their first European title since 1965, which seems to have subsequently inspired the squad to take the path to better days, as highlighted by their encouraging start to the 2023/24 season.

The Irons have recorded four wins from their opening eight games, only losing twice so far to portray their progression over the summer, assisted by the impressive business that was orchestrated in the transfer window.

From Mohammed Kudus to James Ward-Prowse, West Ham’s new arrivals have settled in swiftly to life at the London Stadium, however it wasn’t just the incomings that caught the headlines this summer.

Unfortunately for some, adapting to the Premier League and Moyes’ style of play didn’t come so effortlessly, as the Hammers prematurely bid farewell to one of their blockbuster signings of 2022.

When did West Ham sign Gianluca Scamacca?

In July 2022, West Ham announced the signing of Italian striker Gianluca Scamacca, arriving from Sassuolo on a five-year deal with the option to add a sixth year.

The Irons handed the Italy outfit a hefty fee of £35.5m for the 23-year-old, who had shown blistering form in his homeland that prompted Moyes to get a deal for the bright prospect over the line.

Former West Ham striker Gianluca Scamacca.

At the point of his arrival, Scamacca admitted his excitement to join the east Londoners, saying that he felt that West Ham was the “perfect team” for him to develop and impress at.

Why did West Ham sign Scamacca?

As quoted by Moyes, relayed by Sky Sports, the Irons had been “looking to add more strength” to their attack, which is where they found the services of Scamacca “well recommended”.

The 2021/22 campaign was a decisive factor in the Italian’s move to the Premier League, as he made his presence in Serie A known by scoring 16 goals in 36 appearances for Sassuolo, placing him at sixth in the scoring charts alongside company such as Lautaro Martinez and Dusan Vlahovic.

While that season was integral to him taking the career path he did by joining West Ham, the forward’s ability was highlighted in the year prior to his 16-goal streak, with talent scout Jacek Kulig dubbing him a “clinical finisher” at the age of 21.

In capturing him at 23 on a five-year deal, the Irons showed a statement of intent to unearth the full capabilities of the striker in the Premier League, however the ideas were far more bright than the action when it came to Scamacca’s development.

How much did Gianluca Scamacca earn at West Ham?

Not only did the forward make a positive career move by flying the nest and joining one of the most competitive leagues in the world, but he also catapulted his earnings by signing his contract at West Ham.

At Sassuolo, Scamacca was earning around £24k-per-week, a salary that amounted to £1.2m-per-year, not a bad wage packet for a 23-year-old to collect, but nothing on the figure he was presented with in east London.

The striker picked up a weekly wage of £90k at West Ham, earning £4.6m-per-year to make him one of the highest-paid players at the club, receiving the fifth-highest salary during the 2022/23 campaign.

Handing Scamacca such wage only reinforced how highly the Hammers valued their new acquisition, but when it came to showcasing how they valued him on the pitch, it was a different matter.

How many goals did Scamacca score for West Ham?

It took Scamacca nine match days in the Premier League to claim his first goal, however pressure was eased thanks to his stellar contributions in the Europa Conference League qualifiers, as he netted two in two.

It quickly became apparent that the Italian was not suited to Moyes’ style of play, with that being little fault of his own, as the move didn’t play out as perfect as he’d first anticipated.

From lack of game time to West Ham not playing their best football in general, it seemed to be a scenario of ‘right player, wrong time’ for Scamacca at the London Stadium, as he scored three Premier League goals in only 16 appearances.

The forward was only selected to start 11 games in the league campaign, as Moyes opted for a different approach which didn’t put the Italian in the picture, as he averaged just 58 minutes per game in the 2022/23 season, via Sofascore.

Matters were intensified in the summer, as favoured striker and West Ham veteran, Michail Antonio, spoke about Scamacca’s situation on the Filthy Fellas podcast, explaining simply that the forward was not the right man for Moyes’ set up.

After a total of 27 appearances across all competitions and eight goals, the Italian found an exit route from east London, signing for Atalanta for a fee of around £21.5m, highlighting just how poor of a deal the entire saga turned out to be for the Irons.

How much did Scamacca cost West Ham in total?

It could be questioned that if West Ham hadn't won the Europa Conference League, would Moyes have received more backlash for his handling of Scamacca both as a player and as a business transaction, as he was given little chance to show his worth.

The misfiring marksman was simply "disappointing" in truth, in the words of The Athletic's Roshane Thomas, as the exciting prospect of his five-year deal was abruptly ended after just 12 months, in a hugely expensive year for the Hammers’ financial department.

West Ham United striker Gianluca Scamacca.

Despite not playing anywhere near as much as anticipated, Scamacca received his salary of £4.6m, which when added to his transfer fee, amounted to an eye-watering expenditure of roughly £40m to sign and maintain the striker.

To put things into perspective, West Ham were rinsed for around £5m per goal by the Italian, who did his best to impose himself in what was a hostile and negative time to be a new arrival into a fairly rigid system at the London Stadium.

While it was little fault of the 24-year-old’s own, the deal was an absolute disaster for both player and club, who at the point of his departure, had little to show for the millions lost along the way.

Chelsea hold London talks to sign “seriously impressive” Bayern Munich player

Chelsea have now held talks in London to sign a “seriously impressive” Bayern Munich player, who is also being targeted by Manchester City.

Blues eyeing new signings after Maresca rant

Enzo Maresca appeared to hit out at the board after the 3-0 victory against Everton at the weekend, with the manager saying: “The last 48 hours have been the worst 48 hours since I joined the club because many people didn’t support us.”

It is unclear exactly what the Italian was alluding to, given that he refused to expand on his comments any further, but Danny Murphy has suggested the 45-year-old needs to be cautious, saying: “He’s got to be careful. I think you have to realise with the owners and club you are working for, he’s been given an amazing opportunity to manage a massive football club after only managing Leicester.”

One thing that’s for certain is Maresca has been backed in the transfer market, with BlueCo spending heavily to improve the squad in the summer, and with the January transfer window edging closer, more targets are being identified.

Under BlueCo ownership, there has been a heavy focus on bringing in younger players, and the west Londoners are now leading the race to sign Manchester United youngster Kobbie Mainoo, while they are also keen on a Bayern Munich starlet.

That is according to a report from Football London, which states Chelsea recently held talks with the father of Cassiano Kiala in London, despite Brexit regulations forbidding them from signing the 16-year-old until he turns 18.

Manchester City are also interested in signing Kiala, who is regarded as one of the best young defenders in the world, with both clubs looking to form a relationship with the Bayern Munich ace, before potentially making a move when he’s older.

The teenager has been training with the first team since the tail end of the 2024-25 campaign, and he has certainly impressed teammate Jonathan Tah, who said: “He’s fast, good with the ball, and brave. He’s a top-class centre-back.”

"Seriously impressive" Kiala could be destined for the top level

Tah is not the only person who has taken a liking to the defender, with scout Antonio Mango providing an overview of his key strengths on X last month.

Despite his age, the youngster has already started to make it into some of Bayern’s match-day squads, appearing on the bench in five Bundesliga matches this season, which is no mean feat at just 16.

New De Bruyne: Chelsea lead race for £25m star with "world-class potential"

Chelsea are targeting a new playmaker who shares a stylistic likeness with one who got away.

ByAngus Sinclair 3 days ago

It remains to be seen whether Kiala is able to make the step-up to first-team level, but he is certainly exhibiting promising signs, and it is promising news that Chelsea have now opened talks.

Wolves handed prime opportunity to sign "incredible" striker

Wolverhampton Wanderers have now been handed a prime opportunity to sign an "incredible" striker in the January transfer window, according to a report.

Do Wolves need to sign a striker?

Wolves completed the move for Atletico Madrid's Matheus Cunha in the last transfer window, following his initial loan spell from Atletico Madrid, but they had an otherwise quiet summer, only shelling out fees for four other new arrivals.

It is still very early days, but Cunha has not been particularly prolific in the opening stages of the Premier League game, having scored just one goal in his first five games, although the Old Gold have faced tough opposition in Manchester United, Brighton and Liverpool.

However, Hwang Hee-chan has made a flying start to the campaign, having already found the back of the net three times in the top flight, so it is unclear whether Gary O'Neil will need to pursue a new forward in the January transfer window.

That said, if the manager decides he wants to refresh his attacking options, then he may have now been handed a prime opportunity to do so, with Sport Witness relaying reports from Italy, linking Wolves with a new approach for Boulaye Dia.

Dia was targeted by the Old Gold during the latter stages of the summer transfer window, with the Premier League side making a loan offer with an obligation to buy, though their approach was knocked back by Salernitana.

After seeing the move fall through, the Salernitana striker made it clear he was not happy, and he hasn't featured for the Serie A side ever since, initially refusing to travel back to Salerno after the international break, citing personal reasons.

The 26-year-old has now returned to his club, but his long-term future is seemingly in doubt, with Sky Italia reporting he is "unmotivated" in training, and there is a real risk he will not feature for Salernitana before the January transfer window.

As such, Wolves may have a renewed opportunity to sign their summer transfer target this winter, and he could be available at a lower price.

How good is Boulaye Dia?

It is not a great sign that the Senegalese attacker has downed tools in training, simply because he did not get the summer move he wanted, but there are indications he could be a solid signing for Wolves this January.

The France-born striker has now proven himself in three of Europe's top leagues, scoring 14 goals in 36 Ligue 1 games for Reims in the 2020/21 campaign, before going on to amass ten goal contributions in 25 games for Villarreal the following year.

boulaye-dia-salernitana-premier-league-everton-transfers

However, the former Reims man has looked most impressive in Serie A, averaging just under one goal every two games for Salernitana in the Italian top flight last season, netting 16 times in 33 outings.

Lauded as "incredible" by journalist Josh Bunting, Dia is a proven goalscorer at a very high level, and if Hwang's form dries up before the January transfer window, then it will definitely be worth Wolves making a renewed approach.

Elgar, Amla taught us a lesson – Lehmann

The coach believes the pair’s 88-run stand, which weathered extended periods of reverse-swing from Australia’s quicks, helped AB de Villiers play with far more freedom alongside the tail

Daniel Brettig in Port Elizabeth13-Mar-20181:59

Noise, grumbling and chatter: Everything that’s taking the sheen off a great series

Australia’s coach Darren Lehmann has pointed to the pragmatic example set by Dean Elgar and Hashim Amla as a key lesson for the touring batsmen after the Port Elizabeth Test, after they weathered the sharpest blows of Mitchell Starc, Josh Hazlewood and Pat Cummins to ease the path that AB de Villiers so artfully exploited.Elgar and Amla soaked up 46.2 overs in a partnership of 88 that made for some absorbing if slow-going Test match cricket, and most importantly they were able to keep out the Australian “big three” pacemen during extended periods of reverse swing. While several quick wickets were lost after tea on day two, the investment put in by the top order – however ugly it looked – proved invaluable when de Villiers began to play with far more freedom alongside the tail.In assessing where the Australians went wrong at St George’s Park, Lehmann reckoned that sort of stoic top-order batting had been required, for while David Warner and Cameron Bancroft put on 98 for the first wicket, the highest stand of the match, there was little behind them in terms of partnerships that could tire out South Africa’s attack.”Certainly I thought Elgar and Amla showed our blokes a little bit how to get through that and as we know when your bowlers are starting to bowl 25 overs an innings it is starting to get to be tough work,” Lehmann said. “You make your runs at the back end against quality attacks and that’s what we’ve got to get better at.”Not enough runs in the first innings as you saw, at 0 for 98 I thought we were going really well, and then that either-side period of tea we lost 4 for 9 and 8 for 80 in that, and then 10-11 did really well to get us to 243, but still it was 50-75 runs short. If we have those runs … and we’re probably short in the second innings to be fair, short another 50 there. Batting’s got to improve as we know.”I don’t think we bowled as well to [de Villiers] as we could’ve, that’s an area we can certainly improve on, but in general I think our bowling was first-rate again. If we had the extra 100 runs it would’ve been a rip-snorter of a Test match. From our point of view to AB we’ve got to bowl better to him, he’s a class player.”Dean Elgar plays on the off side•Getty ImagesWhile Warner and Bancroft had given Australia the ideal start, a lack of centuries in either of the first two Tests – South Africa have made two, from de Villiers and Aiden Markram – has hurt. Lehmann pointed to both Bancroft and Usman Khawaja as players who could have gone on to more substantial innings. He also said the captain Steven Smith was unhappy with his output, and would look to atone at Newlands.”That was good, they both looked good,” Lehmann said. “You’d love them to go on, that’s the difference at the moment, AB went on, got 140 and that hurts you in this sort of format when the series is going to be so tight, runs are going to be at a premium against two quality bowling attacks. We need those guys to go on once they get in.”There’s a few good players in the series full stop, not just those two, de Villiers and Smith. He’s disappointed with his output, he sets his standards so high, so we expect him to come back strong in the last two Test matches and have a real impact.”A groin strain to Mitchell Marsh is another of Australia’s concerns ahead of the third Test in Cape Town, and Lehmann said it would be a case of assessing his fitness in the 10-day break between Tests before deciding whether a replacement player – possible Marcus Stoinis – would be required to make the trip across the Indian Ocean.”Reasonably confident but we’ll see over the next couple of days, medical staff will have a look at him and assess him and then make a call from there. We’re hopeful for the next Test,” Lehmann said. “[A replacement] sort of depends on what we want and what we could get in Cape Town. We’ll have to sum that up the next couple of days, once we get there and have a look.”He’s close to made our most runs, we haven’t had a lot of runs in the series so far, but he’s looking as good as anyone at the moment. [With the] ball, he was going to be important, and he was important for us with those couple wickets late on day two, it would’ve been nice to pick up a few more and restrict them by 30 or 40.”We’ve got a break now, lucky enough to have a bit of downtime for the lads over three or four days and then we get into our prep for Cape Town. They’ve had a long summer, we’ve had a long summer, but you’ve seen how competitive it is out there. Both teams will be fine to go next Test.”As for the loss of Kagiso Rabada from the series due to a two-match suspension, Lehmann said he would prefer to see the best players on the park, but added that it wouldn’t matter much if the Australians did not improve their own batting. “It’s never good seeing fantastic bowlers out of series,” he said. “They’re going to miss him there’s no doubt about it, but they’ve got some pretty good bowlers that are back-ups, so for us it doesn’t matter who plays, we’ve got to play and bat better than first two Test matches.”

Wolves “would like to keep” star player

Journalist Ben Jacobs has provided a positive update for Wolves fans regarding the future of Pedro Neto.

The Portuguese forward is one of the Midlands clubs brightest sparks.

What is the latest Pedro Neto transfer news?

According to Football Insider, Arsenal are considering whether to act upon their long time interest in Neto, who has made a comeback from a devastating knee injury suffered in 2021. The Gunners are in the market for some attacking depth to take some of the load off of Bukayo Saka, but a return for the former Lazio man would be a surprise considering he is without a goal contribution for Wolves in his last 21 appearances for the club. The Gunners were interested in the forward in the summer of 2022, however the £50m price tag pushed Arsenal away, however, they could move in for a cheaper price now due to the players disappointing form.

Wolverhampton Wanderers forward Pedro Neto.

Wolves have had Financial Fair Play concerns throughout this summer, and have sold club captain Ruben Neves for £47m and starting defender Nathan Collins for £23m in an attempt to balance the books. Despite the young Portuguese attacker being a part of new boss Gary O'Neil's plans for Wolves this season, should the club receive a strong offer for Neto, they may take the cash in order to further ease the FFP constraints and give the manager funds to use elsewhere in the squad.

Neto isn't the only name being considered by the Gunners, with reports linking the North London side with a move for Barcelona youngster Ansu Fati as well. The Spaniard burst onto the scene in 2019, earning praise from Lionel Messi, however a major meniscus injury stagnated his career, and he could make the switch to the Emirates stadium in order to revive his career.

Speaking to GIVEMESPORT, Jacobs revealed that whilst the Gunners have held interest in Neto previously, they have not attempted to move for him this summer to the delight of Gary O'Neil:

He said: "I think Arsenal have looked at Neto previously, but I'm not aware that they've gone back to the table for him at this stage. I think that Neto was phenomenal in the loss to Manchester United on the opening day and showcased almost everything that he can bring in that game – plenty of touches, duels won, a couple of shots on goal and more chances created, I think, than anybody else in the game. He was excellent in that opening game so, at this point, Wolves would like to keep the player."

How will Wolves end this window?

Despite the positive news regarding Neto, Wolves could face another transfer battle for one of their key players.

Mario Lemina is reportedly a target of Liverpool according to Foot Mercato. The Merseyside outfit are looking to strengthen their midfield department after the departures of Fabinho and Jordan Henderson, and the former Southampton man is a name being considered according to the report. The Reds aren't the only side interested, with two other Premier League sides as well as Saudi Arabian sides holding an interest in the midfielder who only joined the Midlands side in January of 2023 for £9.7m.

In terms of incomings, Wolves are reportedly pursuing a move for Manchester United youngster Facundo Pellestri. The Uruguayan has featured in both of the Red Devil's opening games, but could be given a loan move in order to give him more regular first team football. A host of Premier League sides are interested, including Bournemouth and Burnley, so Wolves would have to act quickly if they want to bring the talent to Molineux for this campaign.
