Arteta must drop Trossard to unleash Arsenal’s "sensational" gem

There are just eight Premier League games left for Arsenal this season, and with Liverpool just two points ahead, it's all still to play for.

Mikel Arteta's side came away from the Etihad with a hard-fought point last weekend and with all three against Luton Town after a number of changes to the lineup on Wednesday.

However, the prospect of an away game against Brighton & Hove Albion this evening is a whole nother kettle of fish, and so Arteta should look to drop Leandro Trossard to the bench after his mediocre display against the Hatters.

Leandro Trossard's performance vs Luton

The first thing to clear up is that Trossard wasn't bad on Wednesday night. Like a few of his teammates, he was simply underwhelming, and if the Gunners want to take all three points away from the Amex, underwhelming won't do.

This is an opinion shared by the Standard's Simon Collings, who gave the Belgian's performance a 6/10 on the night. He wrote that while he 'turned his opposite number inside out more than once,' he still 'looks best as a false nine', which is a position Kai Havertz will likely keep for some time.

Collings' perspective is one backed up by the 29-year-old's statistics on the night as in his 94 minutes of action, he registered an expected assists figure of 0.27 and succeeded in three of his four dribbles, but he also maintained a passing accuracy of just 80%, failed to register a shot on or off target, lost four of his eight duels, lost possession 13 times and completed just one cross.

In all, it wasn't a performance that should see him keep his place in the team for tonight's must-win encounter on the south coast.

Why Gabriel Martinelli should start against Brighton

Yes, the electric Gabriel Martinelli should be brought back into the starting XI for today's game instead of Trossard.

There are a few reasons, with the first relating to their effectiveness on the left wing. In Martielli's 31 appearances on the left this season, he's scored eight goals and provided five assists, meaning that he's currently averaging a goal involvement every 2.3 games.

In comparison, the former Seagulls ace has scored six goals and provided just one assist from his 22 appearances out wide, meaning that he is averaging a goal involvement every 3.1 games.

Moreover, the gulf in output was present last season as well – albeit slightly less significant – with the former Ituano gem averaging a goal involvement every 2.2 games compared to the Belgian's average of every 2.5 games.

The second reason for starting the "sensational talent," as U23 scout Antonio Mango described him, is his speed.

From looking at the heatmaps of Brighton's two primary right-backs, Tariq Lamptey and Joël Veltman, it is clear that while Roberto De Zerbi likes to build out from the back, they do tend to venture forward fairly often, which means a rapid left-winger could exploit the space behind before firing a cross into the box or having a go themselves.

Therefore, it would make sense to start the player Havertz described as the fastest in the squad, ahead of the more technical but slower Trossard.

Arsenal must cash in on £30m ace who completed 100% of his passes vs Luton

It is clear that he has no future in North London.

Ultimately, Arsenal will remain the favourites for this game regardless of who starts, but Arteta could help tip the scales further in his favour by starting Martinelli on the left.

  • WHAT HAPPENED?

Sancho has been 'looking lively' in pre-season training and could prove to Erik ten Hag that he is ready to be brought back into the fold at Old Trafford, according to James Ducker, who watched an open training session. Sancho, part of a team alongside Casemiro, Hannibal Mejbri and Ethan Wheatley, was apparently sharp and offered a glimmer of hope that he might be kept at the club beyond the summer.

    THE BIGGER PICTURE

Sancho was excluded by Ten Hag at the start of last season with the United boss critical of his attitude in training. Sancho managed to escape the purgatory his career had ended up in and moved on loan to former club Borussia Dortmund. The winger impressed in spells, particularly in the Champions League, and may well have done enough to convince Ten Hag to repair their relationship. Despite signs of an improvement in the pair’s understanding, Sancho’s future remains unclear.

  • DID YOU KNOW?

Sancho has unsurprisingly been linked with moves away from Old Trafford. Both Paris Saint-Germain and Juventus have been chasing his signature, but with United hopeful of recouping as much of their initial outlay for the winger as possible, it remains to be seen if a deal is feasible.

    WHAT NEXT FOR SANCHO?

Sancho can stamp his mark further in pre-season by impressing against Arsenal on Saturday. He played 45 minutes of United’s 2-0 victory against Rangers last weekend, and will want more minutes in the tank against the Gunners, who drew 1-1 with Bournemouth on Wednesday.

Ben Stokes has hit out at The Sun newspaper for the “heartless” and “immoral” decision to publish a front-page article about a family tragedy that occurred in New Zealand before he was born.In a statement on Twitter, Stokes said the story concerned “events in the private lives of my family, going back more than 31 years” adding that it contained “serious inaccuracies which has compounded the damage caused”.”The decision to publish these details has grave and lifelong consequences for my mum in particular,” Stokes said. “To use my name as an excuse to shatter the privacy and private lives of – in particular – my parents is utterly disgusting.”It is hard to find words that adequately describe such low and despicable behaviour, disguised as journalism. I cannot conceive of anything more immoral, heartless or contemptuous to the feelings and circumstances of my family.”Stokes has hit the headlines for all the right reasons this summer, thanks to his starring role in both England’s World Cup win against New Zealand at Lord’s in July, and his stunning unbeaten 135 in the third Ashes Test at Headingley, a performance that was hailed as one of the greatest innings of all time as England squared the series with a one-wicket win.”I am aware that my public profile brings with it consequences for me that I accept entirely,” he said. “But I will not allow my public profile to be used as an excuse to invade the rights of my parents, my wife, my children or other family members. They are entitled to a private life of their own.”For more than three decades, my family has worked hard to deal with the private trauma inevitably associated with these events and has taken great care to keep private what were deeply personal and traumatic events.”Stokes’ statement has been retweeted more 25,000 times, including by his Test captain Joe Root, who urged his followers to “please take the time to read this and respect it”, and the Manchester United striker, Marcus Rashford, who stated that Stokes had been “huge for sport this summer. He and his family deserve better.” Tom Harrison, the ECB chief executive, also joined in the condemnation on behalf of English cricket.”We, like the wider sporting world, are disgusted and appalled at the actions taken in revealing the tragic events from Ben’s past,” he said. “We are saddened that an intrusion of this magnitude was deemed necessary in order to sell newspapers or secure clicks.”Ben’s exploits this summer have cemented his place in cricket’s history – we are sure the whole sport, and the country, stands behind him in support.”In a statement, The Sun insisted the paper had the “utmost sympathy” for Stokes and his mother, but said that they had received the co-operation of a family member in compiling the story.”The tragedy is also a matter of public record and was the subject of extensive front-page publicity in New Zealand at the time,” the newspaper added.

FSG send Liverpool scouts to track "excellent" Inacio after bid claim

Liverpool have sent scouts to watch an "excellent" player in person during the last week, having tabled a bid for him last summer, according to a fresh transfer update.

Liverpool's injury crisis worsens

The Reds are flying at the moment, threatening to go far in all four competitions they are playing in, and their defence is so much stronger than it looked last season, helped by a rebuilt midfield in front of it.

Despite this, there could be a need to sign a new defender during the January transfer window, with Joel Matip's cruciate ligament injury ruling him out for the remainder of the season and acting as a major blow.

It means there is a huge onus on both Virgil van Dijk and Ibrahima Konate to stay fit until May – the latter has been injury-prone in the past – with Joe Gomez and Jarell Quansah good options, but both potentially required to fill in at full-back, with Trent Alexander-Arnold now injured, joining both left-backs in the treatment room.

A host of different centre-backs have been linked with moves to Liverpool this month, including Sporting CP star Goncalo Inacio, who is arguably one of Europe's most exciting young defenders at the moment, and can actually fill in at full-back as well.

Bayer Leverkusen ace Piero Hincapie has also emerged as a potential addition at Anfield, with his long-term ceiling thought to be very high, and Crystal Palace's Marc Guehi has also been touted as a target, too.

Goncalo Inacio to Liverpool update

According to a new claim from HITC from journalist Graeme Bailey, Liverpool have again been scouting Inacio ahead of a possible move in the near future, following FSG reportedly submitting a bid to Sporting at the start of the window.

"Liverpool’s main reason for being present (at Sporting's win over Estoril on Friday) was to continue their assessment of Goncalo Inacio. HITC Football understands that the Portuguese star is a player the Reds admire hugely and he has been on their radar for a couple of years."

It is no surprise that Inacio is a wanted man, having been lauded as an "excellent" player by football talent scout Jacek Kulig, and he could be an outstanding signing by Liverpool, whether that be in January or in the summer transfer window. The 22-year-old is arguably already one of the first names on Sporting's team sheet, and his numbers highlight what an imperious season he is enjoying for his current club.

If Liverpool manage to sign him, he could be viewed as Van Dijk's long-term replacement at the heart of their defence, and his ability to play at left-back as well would immediately improve the depth across Jurgen Klopp's defence.

A huge bid will be needed to snap up Inacio, which is no surprise given his ability, but he could be a mainstay of the back-line for a decade, eventually looking like a bargain, as has been the case with Van Dijk after his £75m switch from Southampton.

After a successful season with the Welsh side, the 22-year-old revealed how their League Two rivals were always used to be jealous of Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney's side and how they practically treated every league game during the campaign as a cup final.

Speaking to the , the English custodian said, "I don’t think there’s a lot of teams who like us in the division. Just because of the club, there’s some jealousy and I think every game we played was like a cup final. If we lost a game then they would celebrate. It would be unbelievable. With the fans jumping into crowds, fighting us at the end of games, pushing us and saying to us, ‘You’re rubbish’ and stuff like this. It’s definitely a different experience! Clement benches Davies in Rangers’ predicted League Cup final lineup vs Aberdeen

Glasgow Rangers warmed up for their League Cup final showdown with a sublime 3-2 victory over Real Betis in the Europa League on Thursday evening.

Remarkably, it was the first time the Gers had won against Spanish opposition in Spain after 13 tries, and it allowed them to top the group and secure a place in the last 16 of the competition.

Rangers' 8/10 maestro was the real hero alongside Roofe vs Betis

Rangers secured a stunning victory in Spain over Real Betis on Thursday evening

By
Ross Kilvington

Dec 15, 2023

Philippe Clement will take a lot from that win, especially as he was missing a handful of first team players, and it sets the Light Blues up nicely for a clash against Aberdeen at Hampden tomorrow.

Glasgow Rangers managerPhilippe Clement.

The Light Blues haven’t won the trophy since 2011 and if Clement can lead the Ibrox side to victory for the 28th time in the competition, his standing amongst the supporters will continue to grow.

Following an energy-sapping tie in Seville, here's a look at the potential starting XI that could take to the Hampden pitch on Sunday afternoon…

1

GK – Jack Butland

Rangers goalkeeper Jack Butland

What is there to say about Jack Butland that hasn’t already been said this season? The former Crystal Palace ‘keeper has been outstanding for the Gers during 2023/24.

The Englishman has played in all three League Cup ties already, conceding two goals – none from open play – and he will be looking for his 14th clean sheet of the campaign against the Dons tomorrow.

2

RB – James Tavernier

James Tavernier

The captain has a wonderful record against Aberdeen since joining the club in 2015. In 31 matches against the north-east club, Tavernier has scored 13 goals along with grabbing six assists, and he clearly loves playing against them.

Another goal or two tomorrow would go a long way in the Gers' quest for glory in the League Cup, and it would mark the first time Tavernier claims victory in the competition.

3

CB – Connor Goldson

Rangers defender Connor Goldson.

Connor Goldson was rested for the Premiership clash against Dundee last weekend in preparation for the two big games this week and this could turn into a stroke of genius by Clement.

Goldson had missed only two games this season prior to that 3-1 win last week, and he played the full 90 minutes against Real Betis in midweek.

4

CB – Leon Balogun

Rangers defender Leon Balogun.

With Goldson one of the first names on the team sheet, Clement will face a minor headache in who to choose alongside him.

Ben Davies started against Betis yet played a part in the Spanish side scoring their second goal. John Souttar has been in and out of the team under the Belgian and this could indicate that Balogun will be given the nod.

The Nigerian has started seven domestic matches under the 49-year-old coach, with his pace and physical presence proving valuable alongside Goldson, and he will be given the nod against the Dons.

5

LB – Borna Barisic

Rangers defender Borna Barisic.

The Croatian has started only one match in the competition this season and that was the 3-1 semi-final victory over Hearts last month.

The left-back has only a few months remaining on his current contract, and he will be doing all he can to impress Clement with the hopes of securing an extended deal.

6

CM – Dujon Sterling

Glasgow Rangers defender Dujon Sterling.

With Jose Cifuentes suspended and Nicolas Raskin and Ryan Jack injured, the manager has a midfield crisis on his hands.

It is alarming that the Light Blues don’t have much depth in this area and this needs to be rectified in January.

Bailey Rice is a wonderful talent, but a game of this magnitude is just too much for him at this present moment in time, and it means Clement will likely unleash Dujon Sterling.

The former Chelsea gem won six of his nine ground duels against Betis after coming on as a sub and also made five tackles, and he could shine alongside John Lundstram.

7

CM – John Lundstram

The Englishman has been ever present since Clement arrived in Glasgow, and he is one of the first names on the team sheet.

He will have Sterling beside him tomorrow afternoon and the onus on the 29-year-old will be to guide the player through a crucial match.

8

RW – Rabbi Matondo

Rangers winger Rabbi Matondo.

Ross McCausland secured another start for the club against Betis and while he looked lively going forward, succeeding with 50% of his attempted dribbles, his defensive abilities need some work.

This could suggest Clement hands a start to Matondo, who came on during the second half in midweek.

The Welshman’s pace could startle Aberdeen and having someone like McCausland on the bench to make an impact later on in the game could be vital.

9

AM – Todd Cantwell

Todd Cantwell

Todd Cantwell missed the Europa League clash for personal reasons, but he should be ready to start against the Dons at Hampden.

The £1.5m signing has managed just one goal so far this term, but in the league, he currently ranks fourth in the squad for key passes per game (1.4) and for successful dribbles per game also (1.1), showcasing his attacking skills.

A "wonderful" talent when at his best – as described by Brian Laudrup – Cantwell will be deployed in his preferred number ten role, with there no doubt he can cause havoc against Aberdeen.

10

LW – Abdallah Sima

Rangers winger Abdallah Sima.

The on-loan youngster scored his 14th goal of the season against the La Liga side and he has been the most dangerous attacking asset for the club this season.

The Belgian will unleash him yet again on the left wing and against Aberdeen last month, the winger created a big chance and made two key passes, proving he has what it takes to create opportunities against them.
