Man City could regret releasing star whose value has soared by 552%

Manchester City have found themselves in a difficult position after four defeats in-a-row in all competitions and they are currently sat five points adrift of Liverpool at the top of the Premier League table.

Pep Guardiola only made two signings in the summer transfer window, Savinho and Ilkay Gundogan, and currently has a very experienced squad, with an average age of 27.8.

The Spanish head coach has plenty of experienced players who have been there and done it but is, perhaps, missing some youthful enthusiasm to add something different at times.

Pep Guardiola for Barcelona.

Bringing Gundogan back to the club on a free transfer from Barcelona, for example, has not worked out perfectly to date, as he has struggled in the Premier League.

Ilkay Gundogan's performances in the Premier League

The German dynamo, who only spent one year away from The Etihad, has started seven of his ten appearances in the top-flight since his return to the club in the summer.

However, the 34-year-old central midfielder has struggled to provide much in the way of quality, with zero goals from 1.29 xG and zero ‘big chances’ created for his teammates in those ten games.

The City whiz has also lost 51% of his ground duels and averaged just 0.9 tackles and interceptions per game in the division, which shows that he has failed to offer much in and out of possession, having starred in the Premier League earlier in his career.

Manchester City may currently be regretting their decision to allow Adrian Bernabe to depart on a free transfer in the summer of 2021, as the central midfielder has thrived as a young talent since moving on from the club.

Adrian Bernabe's soaring market value

The Cityzens released the Spaniard for nothing ahead of the 2021/22 campaign and he was valued at just €2.3m (£1.9m) by Transfermarkt at the time, after making five senior appearances for City in the EFL Cup in three years in Manchester.

Bernabe has had to work hard to make it back to the top level, however, as he joined Parma on a free transfer in the Serie B and spent three seasons in the second tier, helping them to earn promotion last term.

His form in the Serie A this season, though, suggests that he has matured and developed enough to compete week-in-week-out in a major European league.

As you can see in the table above, Bernabe has outperformed Gundogan as a creative force in midfield, whilst also offering more defensively.

The 23-year-old, whose dribbling was described as “breathtaking” by U23 scout Antonio Mango, is 11 years younger than the German midfielder and could have offered more to City and Guardiola in midfield in the present day, if they had kept hold of him.

His market value has also soared as a result of his performances for Parma. Transfermarkt has his current market value at €15m (£12.4m), which means that it has gone up by a whopping 552% since his exit from England.

Man City may have already sold their next Haaland for just £15m

Manchester City decided to cash in on their long-term Erling Haaland replacement.

ByDan Emery Nov 19, 2024

Therefore, City may regret losing him for nothing as he has developed into an excellent talent in the Serie A and could have provided them with the youthful energy and quality that they currently lack in midfield with Gundogan.

Dawid Malan: 'It is totally different bounce to what you're used to' in Sharjah

“If we play in the semi-final on a wicket that maybe is not a 180 wicket, then it is a good learning curve for us”

Sharjah was paradise for batters in last year’s IPL to the extent that there is an Uber pick-up location in the S117 highway that runs next to the ground marked as ‘AB de Villiers’s six vs KKR’. In a dozen games there across the course of the season, there were an average of 8.87 runs per over, and as evidenced by Rajasthan Royals hauling in a target of 224 against Punjab Kings, no total was safe. But conditions at the ground have changed markedly since the pitches were relaid earlier this year. In IPL 2021, the average runs per over plummeted to 7.00, with a slight increase to 7.33 in the eight matches there to date in this men’s T20 World Cup. For England’s batters, adapting to the low bounce proved tough in their first game there against Sri Lanka on Monday night, and they are expecting a similar challenge on Saturday against South Africa.”Usually when you rock up at Sharjah, you’re thinking ‘runs’ as a batter,” Dawid Malan, who had previously played at the venue in the PSL and the T10, said on Tuesday. “You’re really looking forward to that one. But the wickets, since they’ve been relaid, have been totally different and it looks really tough to bat on. I only faced eight balls in the last game but it is totally different bounce to what you’re used to.Malan on Rafiq case

Dawid Malan became the first Yorkshire player to address the club’s report into Azeem Rafiq’s racism claims since the UK government’s intervention.

“Danny [Reuben, England’s media manager] mentioned to me this morning there was something on Cricinfo, which I stay off for various reasons during tournaments and things,” he said.

“It is very serious stuff. I don’t think there is any place for discrimination in the game and it’s something that can hopefully be eradicated.

“We’re sitting here just like everyone else without much information apart from what pops up every now and again in articles and things – we’re pretty much in the dark as much as everyone else.”

“We haven’t trained in Sharjah or got used to those conditions in training because all our training had been done in Dubai. Everyone said they used to be 180-220 wickets but we had to adjust. Early on, we probably thought the wicket was better than it was – the new ball probably came on a bit better for the first two overs or so. After that, it got lower and harder to bat on. We have one more game in Sharjah and then if we play in the semi-final on a wicket that maybe is not a 180 wicket, then it is a good learning curve for us.”The two games we’ve had at Dubai, it didn’t really feel like there was too much dew, but the one at Sharjah was really dewy for whatever reason. We know that if you bat first, if it’s a 150 wicket you probably know you have to get 160 – probably add 10 or 15 runs. In the last game, the bowlers definitely felt that the wicket got slightly better. Whether that was the wicket or the ball because of the dew or the way the ball skidded on slightly more, I don’t know… but it definitely is more of an advantage batting second in these conditions.”Dawid Malan scored an unbeaten 99 last time England played South Africa•Getty Images

Like several England batters, Malan has had limited time in the middle in the World Cup to date: he was not used against West Indies as England promoted their six-hitters in pursuit of a net-run-rate boost, and has made 28 not out, 8 and 6 in his three innings since.Malan made a brilliant 99 not out off 47 balls last time England played South Africa, their next opponents but has had a leaner patch of late, averaging 25.83 with a strike rate of 112.72 in his 14 T20I innings since then which resulted in him losing his No. 1 ICC ranking on Tuesday. He said that he would take confidence from his previous success against South Africa – he has three fifties in five innings against them – but said that playing against them in Sharjah would be “a different challenge”.”The conditions we had out in South Africa and when I played in Cardiff against them [on debut in 2017] are totally different to the ones that we’re going to have here,” Malan said. “They’re obviously a really strong team and they’ve got some fantastic bowlers, especially at Sharjah, with the way that [Anrich] Nortje and [Kagiso] Rabada bowl their lengths when they bowl there. On a slower wicket that keeps slightly low, I think that suits them quite a lot but I hope that what I’ve done in the past against them, I can take that forward into this game with what I’ve learned from facing their bowlers and how I’ve gone about scoring against them.”I’d have loved to have gone out and batted [against West Indies] but ultimately the aim of this team is to win games of cricket and it doesn’t matter who does that. We got our [net] run rate up there, which was good, we won the game, and that’s all that matter.”I feel all right. Obviously, the first game I didn’t bat, second and third games just had to finish it and was disappointed I got out in that third game. And then in the last game I had a bit of time to bat so disappointed to miss out there. But I feel like I’m hitting the ball well – I just need to get a bit of time in the middle and get a score to contribute.”

Tottenham join race to sign "superb" versatile new forward for Postecoglou

Having already signed Dominic Solanke in the summer transfer window, Tottenham Hotspur have reportedly turned their attention towards adding another attacking reinforcement to Ange Postecoglou’s side in 2025.

Tottenham transfer news

The Lilywhites are beginning to reap the rewards for their summer business now that Solanke has found his goalscoring touch. The big-money striker found the back of the net three times in eight appearances before the international break, with two of those goals coming in his last three Premier League games.

However, as he finds his feet and boosts Spurs’ frontline, Postecoglou’s side have remained inconsistent on the results front.

"Special" player likely to quit and could join Tottenham despite new deal

The Lilywhites are seriously keen on him.

Following up victory at Old Trafford with complete capitulation against Brighton & Hove Albion, it’s anyone’s guess as to whether those in north London will be able to fight their way back into the Premier League’s top four come the end of the campaign. Of course, what will help their case is the winter window in 2025, with links already emerging to the likes of Jonathan David and Espanyol winger Javi Puado.

But should they resist turning their attention toward Ligue 1 and La Liga, the Lilywhites could yet shift their focus to a Serie A forward in the summer. According to reports in Spain, Spurs have now joined the race to sign Charles De Ketelaere, who is beginning to rediscover his best form away from Milan at Italian rivals Atalanta.

Attracting the interest of Spurs, as well as the likes of Arsenal, Newcastle United and Manchester City, the Belgian may yet earn another summer switch to put life in Italy behind him. Still just 23 years old, De Ketelaere could form a fine strike partnership with Solanke to hand those in north London the ultimate attacking boost, especially given that he can also play in attacking midfield and on the right flank.

"Special" De Ketelaere can rediscover best at Spurs

After failing to score a single goal in 40 appearances for Milan, De Ketelaere swapped the San Siro for Atalanta and has managed to show glimpses of his best ever since, scoring 15 goals and assisting another 12 in 60 appearances. That said, he’s still not quite performing at the levels he showed whilst at Club Brugge, which could leave the door ajar for another exit.

If that does prove to be the case, Spurs could complete a summer swoop and take a gamble on a player who has plenty of potential, according to Football Talent Scout’s Jacek Kulig, who described De Ketelaere’s talents as “special” and “superb”.

With four Premier League clubs now seemingly battling to sign the Belgian, Spurs may just send a statement by welcoming De Ketelaere when the summer transfer window arrives.

Matter of time before Real Madrid sign £110m ace with Perez ready for talks

It is reportedly considered a “matter of time” before Real Madrid sign a marquee star, with club president Florentino Perez prepared to open “serious” talks.

The Galacticos have a quality but aging squad right now, not to mention one depleted in some key areas.

ByEmilio Galantini Oct 3, 2024

The likes of Luka Modric (39) and Toni Kroos (34) are well into their twilight years at the Bernabeu, and this has prompted reports that Perez could soon take to the transfer market in search of heirs for his midfield legends.

It is believed that Real are keeping tabs on Villarreal star Alex Baena as a possible replacement for Modric in particular, with the Spain international currently starring for his Yellow Submarine side and available for the value of his £51 million release clause.

Meanwhile, there is also the matter of bringing in a world-class central defender to shore up Carlo Ancelotti’s backline. Currently, Real have four senior options in that area – Antonio Rudiger, David Alaba, Eder Militao and Jesus Vallejo.

The quartet boast serious quality, but Alaba’s ACL injury and the fact Rudiger also isn’t getting any younger means that a new centre-back is needed sooner rather than later.

Real could look to the Premier League in this regard. Indeed, reports have claimed that Perez is interested in William Saliba, with suggestions even emerging this week that Real could open talks for Micky van de Ven instead of the heavily linked Cristian Romero.

Going back to midfield, Bayer Leverkusen star Florian Wirtz is set to be a hot commodity next year following his excellent performances under Xabi Alonso at club level and for Germany on the international stage.

Real Madrid expected to sign Wirtz as Perez plans "serious" talks

As per reports from Spain, sources in Germany believe that it is a matter of time before Real sign Wirtz, with Perez prepared to open “serious” talks over a deal for the £110 million playmaker.

Bayer Leverkusen's Florian Wirtz

The Whites are eager to rejuvenate their options in the middle of the park, so much so that they’re ready to pursue a move for Wirtz, who already boasts four goals in the Bundesliga and two in the Champions League over seven appearances across the competitions this season. The 21-year-old is clearly a player of dazzling ability, but it will not be an easy deal for Perez and co to orchestrate.

“Incredible. I’ve watched him three times this year now and he’s blown me away every time,” former England international Joe Cole told TNT Sports earlier this year.

“He’s got a South American flair with a German efficiency about him. We’ve all heard of Jude Bellingham, Cole Palmer and Phil Foden, and Musiala. This lad will be new to the British viewers. Let me tell you, he is every bit as talented as those players. He could go on to be anything.”

Kirstie Gordon weaves web as Birmingham Phoenix strangle Manchester Originals' chase

Birmingham Phoenix claimed their first win of the tournament after prevailing over the Manchester Originals in a spin-dominated contest at Emirates Old Trafford. Phoenix only managed to score at slightly above a run a ball through their innings, but a total of 113 proved more than enough as the home side were throttled in the chase despite Harmanpreet Kaur’s unbeaten 49 off 47.At halfway, the Originals were happy with their work, with Emma Lamb and Sophie Ecclestone sharing five of the nine wickets to fall. Amy Jones top-scored for Phoenix with 31 from 17 but her dismissal by Ecclestone from the 68th ball left the visitors 79 for 7 and in danger of being bowled out inside their 100. It took a scrappy stand of 28 off 25 between Gwen Davies and Issy Wong to lift the innings into three figures. But Phoenix defended the wide open spaces of Old Trafford tenaciously. Kirstie Gordon struck twice with her left-arm spin in the powerplay, on the way to 3 for 14 from 20, and the rest of the attack played their part in limiting the Originals to just four boundaries through the course of their innings. Kaur struck two of them but struggled to break free, seemingly affected by a back problem and unable to lift either her own tempo or her team from defeat.Legspinner Abtaha Maqsood picked up the wickets of Mignon du Preez and Ellie Threlkeld for figures of 2 for 14 and although Kaur batted through to the end, the Originals lost for the second match running as well as becoming the first side in the competition not to reach 100 in a completed Hundred innings.A spin of the coin
Both sides had an inkling about what to expect from this surface at Old Trafford, given it was the same 22 yards that had been used for the men’s T20I last week – a game which saw 26 overs of spin sent down. Amy Jones won the toss and opted to take first use, going against the trend in the tournament so far, in which only twice from nine men’s and women’s fixtures had the captain chosen to bat. Kate Cross, recognising that chasing could be a struggle, said she would have done the same.Following the strategy used by Lancashire in the men’s Blast, the Originals packed their side with spin options and they were quickly to the fore. Alex Hartley opened the bowling, Ecclestone was straight into the attack from the other end and Lamb struck with her first ball coming on after the powerplay. Between them, they delivered 60 balls at a cost of 48 runs and collected five wickets. So far so good.Amy and Evelyn Jones run between the wickets•PA Images/Getty

But even in a small chase, the sluggish nature of the pitch meant Phoenix were always tugging at the Originals’ heels. Katie Gordon, the slow left-armer capped by Scotland and England, became the second bowler in the Hundred (after Lamb earlier in the day) to bowl ten consecutive deliveries spanning a change of ends. She removed Lamb lbw with her fourth ball and then had Lizelle Lee with her seventh, a full toss that was spooned to square leg. After 15 balls, Gordon had 2 for 5 and the Originals were already looking nervy.Top-order troubles
Having lost their opening fixture at home to London Spirit, when they slipped to 37 for 3 from 36 balls, Phoenix kept the same XI but made several changes to the batting order. Erin Burns moved up from No. 6 to play as a pinch-hitting opener, with fellow Australian Katie Mack dropped down; Eve Jones, who top-scored with 47 while anchoring the innings at No. 3 against Spirit, was shuffled to No. 6; while Emily Arlott and Amy Jones both went up a place. The result was an even worse start, worn track notwithstanding. Despite Burns fulfilling her brief during a frenetic innings of 17 off 16, India opener Shafali Verma failed to get going for the second match running, and with the glovework of Threlkeld accounting for Arlott and Mack, Phoenix were behind the eight ball again, this time 35 for 4 from 37.Davies goes into reverse
The start of Phoenix’s fightback came with the bat. Eve Jones could not get to grips with the surface and was bowled attempting to reverse-sweep Lamb, but Amy Jones finally got her side above a run a ball when helping to take Lauren Jackson’s third set of five for 20 – including the only six of the day over deep backward square leg.Jones’ departure left Phoenix in a spot of bother with almost a third of the balls still to be bowled, but Davies provided the lower-order impetus during an innings in which she repeatedly jumped around and attempted a variety of reverse-sweeps, pulls and paddles. Her first ball was cut for four to deep point, and she swept Hartley in orthodox fashion for as well as reversing Kaur over point for boundaries. An injury sustained while taking a single during the 19th set left her needing a runner, and Mack was then caught short at the non-striker’s off the 94th ball – but even as Davies hobbled off, she had given her team a fighting chance.

Day four washed out without a ball bowled

India and New Zealand now have a maximum of 196 overs – including the reserve day – to identify an outright winner

Sidharth Monga21-Jun-20212:36

Is a result still possible in the WTC final?

Persistent rain allowed no play on day four of the World Test Championship (WTC) final, leaving India and New Zealand a maximum of 196 overs – including the reserve day – to identify an outright winner. In case of a draw, the inaugural WTC will have joint winners who will share the award money and the trophy. The draw has become a more favoured result with the first innings of both sides yet to be completed, with only 141.2 overs possible on the first four days. However, the degree of difficulty of batting on this pitch still leaves the teams a chance to claim the win.As it stands, New Zealand are 116 behind India’s first-innings score of 217 with eight wickets in hand after putting India in on day two, after the whole first day had been washed out. Kane Williamson and Ross Taylor are at the wicket with the only half-centurion of the match, Devon Conway, falling minutes before the third day’s play was cut short by bad light. All eyes are now on the forecast for the last two days of the Test. BBC has predicted nothing more than a gentle early-morning shower on Tuesday and a clear sunny day on Wednesday. Accuweather has forecast a cloudy day with the odd shower on Tuesday and a “sunny to partly cloudy” Wednesday. As is the practice with last days of Tests in England, the ICC will cut down the prices for the tickets on the reserve day. PTI reported that the highest-priced category – priced at GBP 150 – will be available for GBP 100 for the sixth day. The prices for the other two categories will go down from GBP 100 and GBP 75 to GBP 75 and GBP 50. Fans who had tickets for days one and four – the complete washouts, which stand to be refunded – will have first go at the tickets, and the remainder will be open to fans who missed out overall in the ticket ballot for the Test. The reserve day had become available the moment more than 150 minutes of play were lost on day one, but looking at how difficult the conditions were on days two and three, there had been a good chance it might not be needed. The rain on day four has all but made sure the final will go into day six. In such a case, the umpires will formally announce the sixth day 60 minutes before the close on day five.

Saif Zaib, Tom Taylor eke out Northants advantage to test Yorkshire resolve once again

Three late wickets in the Headingley murk leave visitors dreaming of shock win

David Hopps30-Apr-2021

Saif Zaib unfurls a drive•Getty Images

Saif Zaib’s progression from teenaged prodigy to proven county cricketer has been far from automatic, but the resolve he displayed against Yorkshire at Headingley will not only encourage Northants to believe that his breakthrough season is upon them but it might even contribute to one of the biggest shocks in the Championship season.Northants should not be taken lightly – they were about to return to Division One before Covid-19 led to the introduction of a conference-style system – and they have an advantage with Yorkshire only 15 runs ahead and seven wickets remaining. Not for the first time this season, Yorkshire find themselves behind the game at the halfway point, but if the weather stays murky, any lead above 160 leaves them competitive, 200 gives them an even chance. The pitch is nibbling regularly and there is some swing to be had.Zaib was the wonderkid who became the first 15-year-old cricketer to represent Northants, and won a three-year contract in the process, but seven years on that has been trimmed to a one-year extension. Averaging under 20 with the bat in all three formats, and with only 24 county wickets to his name, he is now under obvious pressure to prove his mettle.Northants are pushing Yorkshire all the way at Headingley, taking a 28-run first innings lead, and that owed much to Zaib’s discriminating half-century, an exercise in self-denial which brought him 55 from 133 balls, and enabled him to join Tom Taylor, another sturdy half-century maker, in stemming a morning collapse.Related

Amla double-century leaves Hampshire feeling flattened

Yorkshire lost their first five for 80 on the first day; Northants five for 81. Headingley, grey and overcast, remained in grouchy mood with seam bowlers queueing up to take advantage. Only Duanne Olivier did not possess a constant threat.Zaib, left-handed and stocky, met all-comers with respect. He must have feared the worst on 14 when Jordan Thompson’s lbw appeal was turned down, found momentum with two square drives against Harry Brook’s support medium pace just before lunch, and then took successive boundaries off Steve Patterson in an afternoon when Yorkshire’s captain, who must value bowling days like this more with every passing year, must have handed the ball over with some regret.”His statistics do not do him justice,” is the sort of comment heard about Zaib. With only his fourth first-class 50 duly logged, he reminded everyone why. David Willey, Yorkshire’s left-armer, was a former county colleague, and perhaps he remembered how to entice a press on the self-destruct button as Zaib drove on the up and heard his middle stump dislodge behind him. It was a headstrong finish to a responsible innings.Taylor’s runs were equally important for Northants, if not quite as career-defining, and his half-century, not quite as secure, was of similar character, ending when he played inside a delivery from Dom Bess to become the offspinner’s first Headingley wicket. Their stand of 92 in 41 overs, gradually picked up pace, but never lost its air of caution. That was necessary after a fine Yorkshire morning which brought five wickets, all of them caught at slip, the best delivery arguably Patterson’s, from around the wicket, to end Ricardo Vasconcelos’ impressive 47, the best catch assuredly Brook’s one-handed plunge to his right at third slip as Thompson found Luke Procter’s edge.Yorkshire’s 20 overs late in the day – play dragged on until beyond 7pm – were as problematic as had been anticipated, most distressingly so for Tom Kohler-Cadmore, who had responded to his first-innings dismissal by asserting that he fully believed that opening the batting was the best place for him, and that the bad shots that were getting him out could happen anywhere in the order.Sadly for Kohler-Cadmore, 24 hours later all he had to show for his affirmation was an 11-ball duck – and an understandable sense of grievance. Ben Sanderson – “Sheffield-born Ben Sanderson” to Yorkshire folk whenever he takes wickets against them – is quite a handful in such conditions, and he had already beaten Kohler-Cadmore on both sides of the bat, but when runs are in short supply to be adjudged caught at the wicket off your hip is the last thing you need.
