Acesse a tabela do Brasileirão e simule resultados

Clement can hand Cantwell a new role by unleashing Rangers’ "spark"

Glasgow Rangers will be aiming to return to winning ways as they welcome Aris Limassol to Ibrox for their Europa League clash this evening.

With a 1-1 draw against Aberdeen on the weekend derailing some momentum gathered under Philippe Clement, the key thing was no further ground was lost in the Premiership title race.

The Gers currently occupy second place in the group behind Real Betis, but a win over the Cypriot side will ensure qualification for the knockout stages.

It will be the fourth time in the previous six seasons that the Light Blues will play European football after Christmas if they do secure all three points, and they could repeat their heroics from 2022, where they reached the Europa League final.

Clement will be taking it one match at a time and not getting too far ahead despite the good form the club are showing of late.

Glasgow Rangers managerPhilippe Clement.

With the fixtures set to come thick and fast over the next few weeks, keeping his starting XI fresh will be a key priority for the Belgian and this could mean there will be a few changes to the starting XI this evening.

While the Light Blues were the dominant team against the Dons on the weekend, they simply couldn’t take their chances and this will need to be fixed ahead of some tough games.

Rangers face a crucial tie against Aris Limassol on Thursday evening

ByRoss Kilvington Nov 27, 2023

With this in mind, could Clement move Todd Cantwell from a wide right position to a more advanced central role?

Todd Cantwell’s game against Aberdeen in numbers

The Englishman looked keen enough against the Dons as he saw the ball often and managed to complete five key passes and succeeded with 100% of his dribble attempts, which are solid statistics, yet his effectiveness in front of goal deteriorates when he is played out wide.

Cantwell failed to take a single shot at the weekend while also losing possession on 12 occasions, and while his versatility is a key strength, it is time Clement stuck him in one position and let him cause chaos.

When he joined the Gers from Norwich City in January, Cantwell ended up scoring four goals and grabbing four assists from an attacking midfield slot, scoring only twice from a wide position, suggesting that playing behind the striker is where he is at his best with regard to scoring and creating chances.

Todd Cantwell’s season in numbers

The 25-year-old hasn’t quite hit the ground running in the 2023/24 campaign, managing to find the back of the net just once across all competitions.

He hasn’t been helped by missing five games after suffering a knee injury during the 1-0 defeat to Celtic back in September and this has disrupted his progress.

The midfielder currently ranks in a lowly 13th position in the squad for goals and assists in the Premiership (one), while he also ranks eighth for shots on target per game (0.4), fifth for key passes per game (1.3) and eighth for successful dribbles per game (0.8) and these statistics clearly indicate that he hasn’t quite been at his best.

Granted, the former Norwich gem has been forced out onto the wing on numerous occasions during the current campaign, yet under Clement, he has to start showing more.

The likes of Tom Lawrence and Sam Lammers are queuing up to slot into that attacking midfield role if Cantwell fails to produce solid displays in the near future and the tie against Aris gives him a perfect opportunity to get some confidence back into his game.

Cantwell being relocated would leave a spot open on the right wing and the Belgian must continue to utilise the talents of Ross McCausland, who has been a breath of fresh air over the previous few weeks.

Ross McCausland’s season in numbers

The former Club Brugge manager has managed to tie down the young winger to a long-term deal at Ibrox and this could be the finest piece of business that the Belgian does in the coming weeks.

The Northern Irishman has already made eight appearances for the senior side this term, and while he has yet to open his account or grab an assist, his pace and ability on the ball has been a joy to behold.

He was given his first start by Clement against Livingston prior to the international break, and he looked extremely lively out wide. The 20-year-old won a penalty during the first half and even had the ball in the back of the net, but it was disallowed.

He doesn’t seem to be fazed at pulling on a Rangers jersey and this lack of fear could stand him in good stead.

Against Sparta Prague just a few weeks ago, the youngster came off the bench and made a wonderful impact. Not only did he succeed with 100% of his dribbles, but he also managed two shots during his 21-minute cameo, along with making one key pass and losing possession just once.

In these types of matches it is tough to emerge from the bench with little time left and create some chances, but that is exactly what the winger did and his performance drew praise from journalist Josh Bunting, who said:

“Ross McCausland has been excellent since coming on, he’s been positive. For such a young player his vision and eye for a pass is of superb quality. Honestly don’t think he’s long away from a start, brings a new dimension and spark into this Rangers side.”

The 6 foot dynamo clearly has the required attributes to succeed at the Light Blues and his displays in the first team this season should only give him further confidence that he can continue to make inroads to becoming a regular in the starting XI.

With Cantwell moving to the middle, a space opens up for the Northern Irishman on the right wing and with a win against Aris securing progress to the knockout stages and European football after Christmas, there isn’t a better game to be involved in.

With a new contract signed and the chance to stake his claim under Clement, McCausland is living the dream.

Arteta could bench Jorginho to unleash "phenomenal" Arsenal dynamo

Arsenal are back in action this afternoon, as Mikel Arteta’s side host Burnley at the Emirates Stadium in the bid to return to winning ways in the Premier League.

Last time out the Gunners’ unbeaten start to the league campaign ended at the hands of Newcastle United, as the Magpies won 1-0 at St James’ Park in controversial fashion following a second-half strike from Anthony Gordon.

Vincent Kompany’s side pose a contrasting challenge to that of last week’s duel, as the Clarets arrive in the capital with just four points, sitting 19th in the table with only one win to their name so far.

Despite Arsenal being the favourites on paper, the visitors will be desperate for a result this afternoon, reinforcing the importance of Arteta’s side returning to their best in order to rebuild the momentum.

Arsenal team news vs Burnley

After beating Sevilla midweek in the Champions League at the Emirates, the Gunners were struck with more injury woes to add to their currently worrying collection.

In the 85th minute, goal scorer Bukayo Saka was forced to withdraw with a knock, which could leave him sidelined for the clash against Burnley this afternoon.

Speaking in his pre-match press conference, Arteta shared that the Englishman was in “quite a lot of pain” when he exited the field on Wednesday, adding that the forward did not train on Thursday.

gabriel-martinelli-bukayo-saka-arsenal-opinion

On the topic of injury, the boss confirmed that Jurrien Timber, Gabriel Jesus, Thomas Partey and Emile Smith-Rowe will not be in contention this afternoon, while sharing that Martin Odegaard is “racing against the clock” to find match fitness after a hip injury.

With a host of key players at risk of not playing against Burnley, Arteta will have some thinking to do ahead of selecting his most appropriate XI to face the clarets, with one name having a strong claim to secure minutes.

The stats that suggest Fabio Vieira should start against Burnley

In the absence of Odegaard and Partey, a midfield pairing of Kai Havertz and Jorginho has been summoned by the manager to questionable effect, giving Fabio Vieira a shout to fight for game time.

With the captain out of action, the Gunners need to identify an assured creative back-up, which the Portuguese whiz can provide when deployed in his favoured number ten role.

Once lauded as “phenomenal” by talent scout Jacek Kulig, Vieira has prevailed as one of the top creators in Europe for his form over the past year, averaging a staggering 0.54 assists per 90 to place him in the top 1% of midfielders in that area, via FBref.

The former Porto maestro also averages 1.72 key passes per 90, a far greater average than Jorginho who has averaged only 0.56 per 90 over the past year.

fabio-vieira-arsenal

While the Italian brings experience, with all respect to Burnley, now could be the perfect opportunity for Arteta to unleash Vieira in the bid to allow him to show his worth at a time of need for an established playmaker in midfield.

There are plenty of decisions for the manager to make ahead of the clash, with the 23-year-old one of those crying out for minutes this season.

Spurs could find Udogie replacement in their "best academy defender"

A key figure in Tottenham Hotspur's resurgence this season under Ange Postecoglou has been promising defender, Destiny Udogie, with the 20-year-old having slotted in smoothly at N17 after spending last season back on loan at Udinese.

Having originally been signed on a £15m deal from the Serie A side in 2022, it had been a frustrating wait for Spurs supporters to see the Italian in action, although that patience has paid off with the left-back now flourishing for the Premier League high-flyers.

Described as "sickeningly good" by footballJOE's Hunter Godson, the Verona native has already recorded two assists from nine league games so far this term, while also averaging an impressive 2.8 tackles per game – third in the squad behind only Pedro Porro and Yves Bissouma for that latter metric.

Destiny Udogie

Seemingly a player who "has it all", in the words of national team boss, Luciano Spalletti, the two-cap international is rightly earning hefty praise at present, hence the potential concern over his relatively early withdrawal against Fulham on Monday night.

As Postecoglou subsequently stated, Udogie was only substituted due to possible fatigue and "tightness", yet it does expose the need for a reliable understudy to the youngster in that left-sided berth.

The possible replacements for Destiny Udogie at left-back

In that 2-0 win earlier this week, the 6 foot 2 maestro was replaced by Emerson Royal for the final half hour or so, albeit with the Brazilian hardly the most natural solution in that role as the right-footer typically lines up on the opposite side.

The Lilywhites do have the versatile Micky van de Ven who can slot into that full-back berth if required, although it would seemingly make little sense to shift the towering Dutchman across, particularly with senior alternatives at centre-back so limited.

The standout replacement for Udogie would seemingly be long-serving stalwart, Ben Davies, with the experienced Welshman comfortable operating at full-back, wing-back or on the left of a back three, having proven a useful squad option over the years with over 300 appearances for the club to date.

Ben Davies for Spurs

That being said, the 30-year-old did struggle in a rare outing against the Cottagers in the Carabao Cup back in August, with 90min's Tom Gott writing that his 'limited technical ability clearly hamstrung Tottenham', while talkSPORT's Gabby Agbonlahor stated post-match that he is simply "not good enough any more".

With that in mind, Postecoglou may wish to consider a player who is currently thriving in the academy set-up in the form of Charlie Sayers, with the 19-year-old certainly one to keep an eye on.

A look at Tottenham's academy sensation, Charlie Sayers

While also comfortable at centre-back, the teenager has largely operated in a left-back berth so far this season both at Premier League 2 level and in the EFL Trophy, notably starting in the 5-0 thrashing of Colchester United in the latter competition.

That outing saw the young Englishman showcase his impressive quality on the ball after enjoying a solid 89% pass accuracy rate from his 92 touches, while also completing four of his eight attempted long balls and creating one big chance.

The youngster has also enjoyed prior experience at senior level during his time at former club Southend United – for whom he made six first-team appearances – having been lavished with praise by manager Phil Brown at the time:

"I think Charlie Sayers has been outstanding and you have to say he has a career ahead of him, there’s no doubt about it."

Having been pushing to be the "first choice left-back" at Roots Hall, Sayers has since gone on to impress after joining Spurs in 2021, with respected insider John Wenham describing him as arguably the "best academy defender at the club".

The next step now will be for the high-potential talent to live up to the billing by making his mark at first-team level, with any potential absence for Udogie in the coming weeks or months potentially set to be his route into Postecoglou's plans, ahead of Davies.

Arsenal still eyeing move to sign "great" player for Arteta; scouts sent

Credit where it's due, Arsenal have once again got off to a flying start in the Premier League to put to bed any doubts that last season could have been a one off. Mikel Arteta has transformed the Gunners from lost failures into serious title challengers – the job that the Spaniard has done so far has been impressive.

The North London side have also improved off the pitch, with their transfer business ending in success more often than not, putting to bed the era of transfer flops that included the likes of Nicolas Pepe. Instead, this is the era of impactful additions, and that could include the potential arrival of one particular Turkish Super Lig player.

Arsenal transfer news

The Gunners spent well in the summer, refusing to take their foot off the gas ahead of their return to the Champions League this season. In the end, Arsenal's summer spending reached as much as the €235m (£205m) mark, and Arteta has been rewarded for his club's spending ever since.

With a long title race ahead, too, Arsenal could yet return to the transfer market when the January window opens, with the latest Sacha Boey transfer news suggesting that he could be among their targets. According to Fotospor, the Gunners have sent scouts to watch the right-back in Galatasaray's recent defeat over Besiktas.

Boey, of course, was the subject of Arsenal transfer interest throughout the summer, with reports in Turkey claiming that the Premier League giants made a £12m bid for the full-back, who had an asking price of £17m, leaving Arsenal to pursue and seal a deal for Timber instead. As Timber recovers from an ACL injury, however, the Gunners may need another right-back, which has seemingly turned their attention back to Galatasaray and Boey.

Sacha Boey's stats

So far this season, Boey's stats prove just how important he is for Galatasaray these days. The 23-year-old has started in every single game for Okan Buruk's side this season, who have even got a win at Old Trafford against Manchester United under their belt.

It's no surprise, given his importance, that Boey has been at the centre of praise during his time in Turkey, including from former Arsenal defender Bacary Sagna, who said: "Galatasaray’s Sacha Boey is a player I really like. I think he will fit perfectly into Arsenal. As a right-back too, I have to say I think he’s great. I’m sure many clubs have Sacha Boey in mind.“There is a contract to sign.”

Whilst Timber remains on the sideline, it could be a wise move from Arteta to secure another right-back option, creating plenty of competition for both Ben White and Takehiro Tomiyasu. As the Champions League fixtures begin to come thick and fast, too, and injuries inevitably fall the way of those at The Emirates, the greater squad depth that Arsenal have, the better that they may cope.

Man Utd: Fergie missed out on £11m gem who had bigger impact than Beckham

Manchester United appeared to have finally found the true heir to Sir Alex Ferguson’s throne when they appointed Erik ten Hag last summer, especially following a solid debut campaign.

The former Ajax boss secured a top-four finish in the Premier League during 2022/23 – securing a Champions League berth – while also winning United’s first silverware in six years by defeating Newcastle United in the Carabao Cup final.

All signs looked promising for the Dutchman, yet he has been brought down to earth so far this term, winning only five games from 11 while suffering defeats in the opening two Champions League group stage ties, becoming the first United manager to experience this.

A lengthy injury list hasn’t helped his cause while the manager failed to land several of his top targets during the summer transfer window – like Harry Kane – yet there can be no excuse for their performances as of late, and it looks as though they are already out of a title race before Halloween.

Manchester United manager EriktenHag

Missing out on top targets didn’t impact Ferguson too much during his tenure at Old Trafford, and over the course of 26 and a half years, he missed out on several players who went on to bigger and brighter things.

He could have spearheaded his side to even more trophies had he signed Alan Shearer before Newcastle came calling, while Paul Gascoigne was even a target during his embryonic spell in Manchester – how different Gazza’s career could have been had he been bossing the United midfield we will never know.

'Fergie' was even linked with a talented youngster around the turn of the century, yet he eventually moved to Chelsea and became a Premier League icon in the process – Frank Lampard.

Did Man Utd nearly sign Frank Lampard?

Having enjoyed talents such as Bryan Robson, Roy Keane and Paul Scholes starring across his midfield during his reign at Old Trafford, Ferguson was also keeping an eye out for the next big thing which could revamp his starting XI.

Lampard was making waves during his early spell at West Ham and United had shown interest, with the legendary Scot explaining that he should’ve followed up with a more concrete move for the player.

“Lampard has been unbelievable,” said Ferguson. “I don’t think a midfield player will be able to do that figure again. It’s quite phenomenal.

“Like Bryan Robson, he has had a great knack of timing his runs into the box at the right time. John Wark was another one at Ipswich.

“The guy has had a great career. I must say we looked at him when he was at West Ham as a young player and I maybe regret not having done it.

“Where else could I get 200 goals?”

It’s safe to say United may not have had their dip in form between 2003 and 2006 had they been able to call on the goals of Lampard, especially considering how effective he was in front of goal for the Stamford Bridge side during those years.

What happened to Frank Lampard?

The Englishman joined the Blues for £11m and enjoyed a sparkling spell at the club. During 13 years in London, Lampard not only spearheaded Chelsea to three Premier League titles, but also won a Champions League crown and claimed four FA Cup winners medals as the club enjoyed the most productive spell in their history.

Indeed, Lampard even arguably made a bigger impact in the top flight than David Beckham did during his spell at United. On the surface, this sounds like a strange suggestion as 'Becks' won double the amount of titles than Lampard, yet he was a key member of Fergie’s side, while Lampard was often the catalyst for Chelsea during their period of success.

During his nine seasons where he made a Premier League appearance for United, Beckham scored ten goals in a single term just once – finding the back of the net on 11 occasions during the 2001/02 season.

In comparison, Lampard featured for Chelsea in 13 league seasons and scored ten or more goals in all but three of these, with 2009/10 proving to be his most impressive campaign, netting 22 goals and grabbing 16 assists as the club won their third Premier League title.

Overall, Lampard made 429 top flight appearances for the Blues compared to the 265 games played by Beckham and it is evident who had the bigger impact on their respective team's success.

Lampard was able to dictate the play from the heart of the midfield while also proving to be a dangerous threat in the opposition box and if it weren’t for his goals, it is unlikely the Blues would’ve enjoyed the same sort of success.

Beckham on the other hand, was also a sensational footballer and is perhaps overlooked due to his off-the-field image and worldwide fame following his move to Real Madrid in 2003. Aside from Eric Cantona during the 1990s and early 2000s, United tended to operate with a wonderful team spirit that spurred them on to glory.

Removing Beckham would have weakened them, but Ferguson ultimately replaced him rather quickly and moved on – signing Cristiano Ronaldo soon after. Lampard wasn’t as replaceable for Chelsea, especially at the peak of his powers.

What is Frank Lampard doing now?

After hanging up his boots, the former midfielder took up a managerial role with Derby County and after finishing runners-up in the Championship playoff final, he landed his dream job – managing Chelsea.

It didn’t work out at the Blues for Lampard while he also struggled during a year-long spell in charge of Everton, and it certainly proves that having an excellent playing career doesn’t necessarily suggest that a solid managerial career will follow.

Fergie missed out on quite a few world-class talents during his stint at United and Lampard was definitely up there as one of the best in the business, especially after he joined Chelsea.

It's hard to compare the careers of Lampard and Beckham due to them playing in different positions and different leagues for vast spells, but the statistics determine that the former Blues star had a bigger impact in the Premier League and could’ve taken United to a different level.

Jeetan Patel, Henry Brookes share 18 as Warwickshire close in

Derbyshire should be easy meat for the Bears as they seek to wrap up a small target on Sunday morning

ScorecardJeetan Patel and Henry Brookes bowled Warwickshire to the brink of victory over Derbyshire in the battle of the Specsavers County Championship Division Two top two at Edgbaston.Having shared eight wickets in the first innings, the pair added all ten in the second to bowl out Derbyshire for 209 on the third day. That left a victory target of just 89 and Warwickshire were 19 for 1 at the close. With a bowling attack already missing the injured Olly Stone and Keith Barker and further depleted by the loss of Ryan Sidebottom to a side-strain, the home side needed others to step up. Captain Patel and 18-year-old Brookes did exactly that.Patel took 6 for 76 to complete match-figures of ten for 170 (the fourth ten-in-a-match of his career) while Brookes harvested 4 for 56 for match-figures of eight for 119.After Warwickshire resumed in the morning on 375 for 6, they added another 64, pegged back by three wickets for Duanne Olivier who finished with 4 for 134.Olivier removed Matt Lamb (a career-best 79, 155 balls, six fours) who edged to second slip before Patel and Brookes also perished via outside-edges, off Olivier and Hardus Viljeon respectively.Tim Ambrose shepherded the tail intelligently so that 40 were added for the last two wickets before the wicketkeeper scooped Olivier to long leg.Derbyshire’s second innings suffered immediate damage from Brookes. The Warwickshire academy product’s first ball knocked out Luis Reece’s off-stump, the batsman offering no shot. Wayne Madsen chipped his sixth to mid-off.Ben Slater and Alex Hughes knuckled down to add 88 in 28 overs before Patel struck twice in seven balls. Hughes was lbw for 38, trapped on the back foot, then Billy Godelman edged to second slip to fall for a duck.Slater and Gary Wilson took the score to 138 for 4 but both then fell without addition. Slater’s impressive resistance ended at 68 (161 balls) when an inside-edge off Patel ball looped up off pad to short leg. Hamidullah Qadri lifted the former to mid-off and Olivier was trapped in front by the latter before Viljeon failed to connect with an attempt to smite Patel into the adjacent suburb of Moseley. In nine overs before the close, Warwickshire lost Will Rhodes, lbw playing across the line to the big-hearted Viljoen.

Nottingham Forest: Cooper had a nightmare with £80k per-week flop

Nottingham Forest are notoriously active in the transfer market and following their promotion to the Premier League in 2022, Evangelos Marinakis went overboard with his dealings.

Having returned to England's top table after 23 long years, Forest's strategy to ensure survival was to sign any player they could get their hands on. Of course, that wasn't literally speaking, but during the summer transfer window, the Reds saw an astonishing 30 new players arrive through the City Ground doors.

While a handful have gone on to achieve success in the Garibaldi, namely striker Taiwo Awoniyi, attacking midfielder Morgan Gibbs-White, right-back Serge Aurier and defensive midfielder Orel Mangala, the likes of Josh Bowler, Lewis O'Brien and Jonjo Shelvey have endured a torrid time at the club.

One of those to flop was Jesse Lingard, who arrived on a free transfer from Manchester United, costing the club a staggering £80k per-week.

How did Jesse Lingard get on at Nottingham Forest?

For all the hype surrounding his transfer to the club, with many expecting him to single-handedly drag Forest to safety, Lingard's year in Nottingham was largely spent eating up wages without contributing to the club's fight against relegation.

Arriving with lofty expectations having previously scored for England at a World Cup and played at Champions League level for Man United, the 30-year-old disappointed across all fronts, making just ten starts in the Premier League while the only goal contributions he managed were in Carabao Cup victories over Tottenham and Blackburn.

For a player of Lingard's quality, this wasn't good enough and his displays for the club were cast under the media spotlight, with the player facing criticism for his underwhelming performances.

After Forest's 5-0 defeat against Arsenal at the Emirates last season, Lingard was slammed by former Reds' striker Glenn Murray for his inability to stamp a mark on the fixture, making no key passes, no shots on target, one tackle, five accurate passes and only one clearance.

Murray said: “So far, Jesse Lingard has been quite wasteful in possession. Nottingham Forest need more from him, especially going forward. A little bit more creativity.”

Having once been described as "amazing" by Rio Ferdinand during his successful loan spell at West Ham, which was a particularly high point in his career, Lingard reached new lows at the City Ground, but that didn't deter Steve Cooper from having faith in the Englishman turning his form around.

Following his goal contributions in the Carabao Cup, Cooper expected him to kick on and start having a bigger impact on matches, saying: "You want to see all your players at their best on game days,"

"For sure, if Jesse is at his best, he is a player who can have an impact in any game.

"He's an excellent trainer. You can see he loves football. You can see he really cares about doing well. Like all of the boys, you've got to try to turn that."

Despite praising the Englishman, Lingard didn't repay that faith as only managed an xG of 0.10, 0.86 shots, 1.54 shot-creating actions, 0.51 progressive carries and 0.68 successful take-ons all per 90, via FBref, numbers that ranked him within the worst 10% of positionally similar players in European football.

Having only signed the 5 foot 9 dud on a one-year deal, Cooper will surely be glad to see the back of Lingard, who is attracting interest from multiple clubs.

Who wants to sign Jesse Lingard next?

After his contract expired at the City Ground, Lingard is looking to resurrect his career elsewhere and while he is currently training with West Ham, other clubs from England and abroad are beginning to circle for his signature.

Following his purple patch for the Hammers in the second half of the 2020/21 season, setting the London stadium alight with nine goals and five assists in 15 appearances, David Moyes could contemplate bringing him back on a short-term deal.

Despite being impressed with what he's seen from Lingard in training, the Scot has remained tight-lipped on whether he's going to sign him.

When asked about Lingard, he told the Athletic: "Jesse’s doing quite well and he’s getting his shape back.

“But there will be no discussion on Jesse yet.

"When we’re ready, we will do; but he’s working hard and he’s shown a great attitude to his work."

West Ham aren't the only Premier League club rumoured to be showing an interest with Wolves also apparently readying a move in the coming days, according to Sky Sports, while Lingard has reportedly "received two offers" from Saudi clubs.

Wherever Lingard chooses to go next, it surely can't plan out worse than it did at Forest. Indeed, Cooper may well regret ever bringing him Trentside in the first place.

Tottenham: Spurs Chiefs Eyeing "Gold" Defender Signing

Tottenham Hotspur could make a conditional late move for Leicester City defender Wout Faes as journalist Sacha Tavolieri shares news out of Spurs.

Who will Spurs sign?

In the last 48 hours, plenty of noise has surrounded the likes of Nottingham Forest winger Brennan Johnson as manager Ange Postecoglou weighs up late Harry Kane replacements.

Spurs have so far sealed deals for goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario, youngster Ashley Phillips, defender Micky van de Ven, playmaker James Maddison, winger Manor Solomon and striker Alejo Veliz, but rumour has it there could be more.

The north Londoners must apparently shift unwanted players out of the door to free up squad space first, though, as the likes of Tanguy Ndombele, Davinson Sanchez, Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg and Eric Dier are linked to leaving the club.

Postecoglou, speaking earlier this month, was up front and honest over Tottenham's need to sell before the 11pm deadline tomorrow.

Ange Postecoglou

"The reality of it is we can't just keep acquiring players," said the Spurs head coach.

"We've got too big a squad as it is. It affects the training, the players themselves because they all want to play and be involved.

"It's not so much one has to happen for the other but our focus at the moment is trimming the squad down and seeing where that takes us in terms of reinforcements. We're assessing that on a daily basis. There's still two weeks to go in the window and I'm sure you'll see some movement."

With just over a day to go until the window shuts, it will be interesting to see if Spurs can indeed sell/loan enough players to move for transfer targets.

Indeed, this comes amid claims that Tottenham are still keen on signing more central defensive cover following the signing of van de Ven from Wolfsburg.

Faes, who dropped to the Championship with Leicester last season, is apparently very much liked by the Tottenham hierarchy as they eye a late move for him.

That is according to reporter Tavolieri, who took to X with some news that Spurs are interested in the Belgian, and could well swoop if they manage to sell Dier.

Leicester City' defender WoutFaes.

"Infos #THFC," wrote Tavolieri.

"Tottenham Hotspur already seeking several options in case Eric Dier leaves #Spurs including Wout Faes who’s is a profile appreciated by the management."

Faes started 31 top flight matches for Leicester last season, standing out as their most regularly-selected central defender.

What's been said about Wout Faes?

The Belgium international ace has been praised by members of the media, perhaps most notably former England star Gary Lineker, who said Leicester struck "gold" with Faes.

Meanwhile, former Foxes boss Brendan Rodgers once also heaped praise on his former defender.

"I've been very impressed," said Rodgers.

"He plays as if he's much older. He knows football – and having guys in your backline that know the game makes a huge difference.

"He's well-educated in football, you can see that in how he plays and his game is suited to the Premier League. He's aggressive for us. The types of defenders I like – he defends forward, he presses the game."
