Liverpool eyeing "dominant" £25m Matip heir on way out of European giants

With the Premier League season just under a month away, Liverpool are reportedly eyeing a move to sign a defensive reinforcement who's been shown the door at his current club.

Liverpool transfer news

This time last summer, the Reds revamped their midfield with Dominik Szoboszlai and Alexis Mac Allister. However, this time around, they've been quiet on the transfer front, perhaps allowing Arne Slot to find his feet and assess the current squad before welcoming any further additions. When those at Anfield are ready to spend, they certainly won't be short on suitable options.

Another Yoro situation: Liverpool must push ahead for £63m "warrior"

He might just fall into another outfit’s clutches this summer.

Recent reports have already linked Liverpool to Jeremie Frimpong and indicated that they've made a £25m bid to sign Baris Alper Yilmaz from Galatasaray. The Turkish winger impressed at Euro 2024 and gave Virgil van Dijk plenty to think about in a resolute 2-1 defeat against the Netherlands in the quarter-finals. Still just 24, Yilmaz could emerge as the ideal backup option to Mohamed Salah this summer.

However, it's not just attacking reinforcements that the Reds have been linked with as they look to replace Joel Matip following the defender's exit at the end of the last campaign. According to TuttoSport, Liverpool are eyeing a move to sign Dean Huijsen in a deal that could be worth €30m (£25m) this summer. The young defender is reportedly on his way out of Juventus this summer amid the Reds' interest alongside the likes of Aston Villa and Newcastle United.

Dean Huijsen for Roma.

Just 19 years old, Huijsen enjoyed an excellent loan spell at Roma last season, featuring 13 times in the league, scoring twice and losing on just two occasions.

Unfortunately, he is still unlikely to get his chance at Juventus as they look to raise funds. That leaves Liverpool and others perfectly poised to land a defender who has shown plenty of signs that he is on his way to the very top, with or without the Italian giants.

"Dominant" Huijsen can replace Matip

Whilst it's easy to point out that Liverpool already have Ibrahima Konate, Van Dijk, Jarell Quansah and Joe Gomez to choose from at the heart of Slot's defence, those four options all have their concerns. Konate and Gomez have struggled with their fair share of injuries, whilst Van Dijk has just one year remaining on his current contract, while Quansah is still young himself. What's more, Sepp van den Berg's Liverpool future is still uncertain, with the Dutchman linked with a move away.

So if the Reds really want to shore things up, welcoming a replacement for Matip in the form of Huijsen should be high up on their list of priorities in the coming weeks. The teenager impressed Football Talent Scout's Jacek Kulig last season, who described the defender as "dominant".

For just £25m, Huijsen is certainly a player worth pursuing for Liverpool before the transfer window slams shut at the end of next month.

Las Palmas boss Martinez has hailed the "two brilliant Scots", who he believes have made Gran Canaria their home. McBurnie has not scored in La Liga yet, but he has registered three assists, including one against Real Madrid. McKenna has made 10 La Liga starts.

WHAT MARTINEZ SAID

Martinez told reporters when asked what the win meant to their local players: "I don’t like to differentiate. Because we are a team. We have two brilliant Scots, Oli, Scott, who feel it like they’re from Gran Canaria. For the guys who have been here a long time, it’s special, but I would highlight the team spirit, and what it means for all of us."

"For those that ask lots of questions about Barcelona too, I hope you can think about us too, have some empathy, know that this is very important for us too, and that 15 points, for us, it could mean a step towards survival for us."

Spurs could sign their answer to Dani Olmo in "exceptional" £25m talent

It's been just over a month since the transfer window opened at Euro 2024 kicked off, but with the latter now over, we can expect to see more movement in the coming weeks.

Tottenham Hotspur have already made a splash in the market this summer when they spent £30m on Leeds United wonderkid Archie Gray, but a more established star they have been linked to is Spanish international Dani Olmo.

The Spaniard enjoyed a spectacular Euros, and as such, the Lilywhites might now find it harder to convince him to move to N17.

However, that may not be an issue, as based on recent reports, Daniel Levy and Co appear to have identified another exciting attacker who could be their answer to the RB Leipzig ace.

Tottenham Hotspur transfer news

According to a recent report from Caught Offside, Tottenham are interested in Fenerbahçe star Sebastian Szymanski this summer.

Sebastian Szymanski.

The report has revealed that the Lilywhites have already sent scouts to watch him play for the Turkish giants, and while they do not want to sell him, a fee in the region of €30m, which is about £25m, would be enough.

It would still be a sizable investment in a player with no experience in a top-five league, but based on his recent performances and his potential, £25m could look like a bargain – especially if signing him negates the need for Olmo.

Spurs transfer target Sebastian Szymanski in action for Fenerbahce.

How Szymanski compares to Olmo

Now, the primary reason that Spurs may see the signing of Szymanski as a reason to call off any interest in Olmo is that, like the Polish international, the Spaniard can play on the left or right and in attacking midfield.

In fact, throughout his career, he has started 131 games in attacking midfield, 43 on the left and 42 off the right. Similarly, the Fenerbahçe star has started 162 games in attacking midfield, 46 between right wing and midfield and 28 between left wing and midfield.

So, if they're able to occupy similar spaces on the pitch, who has been more productive?

Well, last season, the Leipzig star scored eight goals and provided five assists in just 25 games, meaning he averaged a goal involvement every 1.92 games.

In contrast, the "exceptional" 25-year-old, as dubbed by U23 scout Antonio Mango, scored 13 goals and provided 19 assists, meaning he averaged a goal involvement every 1.71 games.

It's not just the attacking output that could make the Sarı Kanaryalar star a more attractive prospect, either.

Across his entire career to date, he has missed just 15 games through injury, whereas the Spaniard has missed a whopping 68 games to date.

Ultimately, Olmo would be an incredible signing for Spurs, but with his injury record hanging over him, their similar levels of output and wildly different prices, picking up Szymanski may be the better option.

Therefore, if Levy and Co have the opportunity to secure his services this summer, they must seize it.

Club chief confirms "interest" in 26 y/o star as Derby submit first offer

Amid a busy transfer window ahead of their Championship return, Derby County have reportedly submitted their first offer to sign their seventh arrival of the summer for Paul Warne.

Derby transfer news

Derby wasted no time before getting their summer business underway, hoping to avoid Championship relegation at the first time of asking and begin their journey back into the top six following last season's promotion from League One.

Jerry Yates

So far, Warne has welcomed Jerry Yates and Ebou Adams from Swansea and Cardiff City, Kenzo Goudmijn from AZ Alkmaar, Corey Blackett-Taylor from Charlton Athletic, Ben Osborn from Sheffield United and Kayden Jackson from Premier League side Ipswich Town in a solid window. Those at Pride Park will be particularly pleased with the arrival of Adams following an impressive loan spell from Cardiff.

After officially completing a permanent move, Adams told the club's official website: "I can't describe it, to be fair. I'm just over the moon and happy that it's finally done. I think it's a long time coming. Nothing's certain in life, but I was really hoping it would go through and I'm very grateful that it has. And now I can continue smiling again and enjoy myself."

Following Adams, the Rams have now reportedly turned their attention towards the goalkeeping department. According to Sports Bladet, Derby have made their first offer to sign Jacob Widell Zetterstrom from Djurgarden this summer, but have had that first move knocked back.

He has interest from numerous Championship clubs.

ByTom Coates Jul 17, 2024

This one may be far from over, however, after Djurgarden sports director Bosse Andersson confirmed the various "interest", saying via Sports Bladet: "You can tell that the interest in Jacob has increased and there are a couple of clubs that we have been in contact with. If something really good comes up regarding Jacob, we will solve it, but it is not something that is relevant right now. But there is interest in him."

Derby still looking to replace Wildsmith

After losing Joe Wildsmith to West Bromwich Albion on a free deal earlier this summer, Derby are running out of time to find a replacement for the shot-stopper, with Zetterstrom the latest option to emerge. The Swede enjoyed an impressive season at Djurgarden, keeping seven clean sheets in 14 league games, but it remains to be seen whether the Rams will submit a suitable offer to his current club, having reportedly seen their first attempt rejected.

At 26 years old, the goalkeeper should be in the prime of his career, making now a more important time than ever to make his biggest career move yet. Derby's first game back in the Championship takes place at Ewood Park against Blackburn Rovers on August 9 in what they hope will become the perfect way to get their return to the second tier going.

By that stage, the Rams must ensure that they've found their replacement for Wildsmith in the summer transfer market.

Spurs could land the dream Richarlison upgrade in £85m "powerhouse"

The summer transfer window is just a couple of weeks away, and even though it's been less than that since they ended a gruelling Premier League campaign, Tottenham Hotspur are already busy looking for their next superstars.

Ange Postecoglou enjoyed a relatively successful summer last year, bringing in the likes of James Maddison, Guglimlo Vicario, and Micky van de Ven, but he'll need to add even more quality this year to help bridge the gap to the Champions League places.

However, a player touted for a move to the club just a few months ago may well be able to do that, even if it's bad news for Richarlison.

Tottenham Hotspur transfer news

As reported a few months ago by Graeme Bailey, via HITC, Tottenham Hotspur were one of several clubs interested in signing Sporting CP's incredibly prolific striker, Viktor Gyokeres this summer.

Viktor Gyokeres in action for Sporting

The report named Chelsea, West Ham United, Manchester United and Arsenal as the other English clubs keen to bring the Swede to the Premier League, while AC Milan wanted him to come to Italy.

Unfortunately for the Lilywhites, the level of competition for the striker isn't the only hurdle in this potential deal, as another report from January revealed that the Portuguese club would not entertain any offer below the forward's €100m release clause, which converts to around £85m.

viktor-gyokeres-transfer-news-leeds-united-championship

It would be challenging to get over the line, but if Daniel Levy and Co want to give Postecoglou the best chance of achieving his goals next season, they should stump up the cash, even if that leaves Richarlison in the cold.

How Gyokeres compares to Richarlison

So, if the Lilywhites can get ahead of the competition in the summer and bring Gyokeres to N17, he won't be coming to sit on the bench, which means the club's main number nine, Richarlison, would be in real danger of losing what little game time he still gets.

With that said, how do the two forwards compare? Well, from a pure output perspective – arguably what matters most in their positions – it's a landslide victory for the former Coventry City star, as his haul of 43 goals and 15 assists in 50 games dwarfs the Brazilian's 12 goals and four assists in 31 games.

That means the Stockholm-born "powerhouse", as described by data analyst Ben Mattinson, averaged a goal involvement every 0.86 games, whereas the man he might replace managed an average of a goal involvement every 1.93 games.

The comparison is just as one-sided when looking at the pair's underlying numbers.

For example, the "remarkable" Swede, as dubbed by Estoril manager Vasco Seabra, produces a higher non-penalty expected goal and assists figure, produces more progressive carries, receives more progressive passes, takes more shots on target and scores from more of them, produces more shot and goal-creating actions, completes more successful take-ons, and wins more aerial duels, all per 90.

In his defence, the former Everton man produces more progressive passes, but that really is about it for him in this comparison.

Ultimately, while Richarlison has enjoyed a few purple patches for the Lilywhites this season, Gyokeres has been on another level entirely, so if the club can sign him, they absolutely should.

Pochettino could sign £100,000-a-week Chelsea duo if he takes Man Utd job

Mauricio Pochettino could be interested in sealing the signing of two Chelsea players if he becomes Manchester United manager this summer, according to a fresh claim.

Man Utd manager & transfer news

The Red Devils are now heading into the summer transfer window with far more positivity in the air, following their memorable FA Cup final triumph over Manchester City on Saturday afternoon. That's not to say that Erik ten Hag isn't still under big pressure to keep his job, however, with Pochettino one of those who is seen as a possible successor this summer. Contact has even been made regarding a move for him.

Even before the City game, so many players were being linked with moves to United at the end of the season, too, and the constant rumours aren't going away at all. Real Madrid veteran Joselu has emerged as a surprise target for Sir Jim Ratcliffe in recent days, with the 34-year-old striker recently inspiring his side to the Champions League final with two late goals against Bayern Munich in the semi-finals.

Crystal Palace ace Michael Olise has been constantly backed to seal a summer move to Old Trafford, and the Frenchman is seen as their possible version of Phil Foden, possessing the City star's left foot and magical ability. Young Lille centre-back Leny Yoro is a huge prospect for the future, and United are reportedly battling with Liverpool to secure his signing before the beginning of next season, too.

Joao Neves is another young player with an enormous amount of potential, already maturing into one of Benfica's key players, and the central midfielder is viewed as Casemiro's perfect replacement this summer. Paul Scholes is a big admirer of the Portuguese, which United supporters will likely see as a good thing, given the Englishman's legendary standing.

Pochettino could sign two Chelsea players at Man Utd

According to a new report from Football Insider, Pochettino could look to sign Conor Gallagher and Trevoh Chalobah for Manchester United in the summer transfer window, should he come in.

The midfielder and defender are described as "the most likely candidates to make the switch to Old Trafford" alongside the Argentine, in terms of Blues players.

It remains to be seen if Ten Hag will keep his job or not, with "crucial" talks planned this week, but either way, Gallagher and Chalobah would be strong additions by United.

The former would be the more eye-catching signing of the two, with the £50,000-a-week England international hailed by Pochettino earlier in the season, given his impact at Chelsea: "I think he is a player with a great commitment to the team. He is always trying to compensate in every situation, in offensive and defensive situations. It's priceless to have a player like him."

Chalobah, also earning £50,000 per week, could be a shrewd purchase as well, though, with the 24-year-old's versatility allowing him to shine as both a right-back and a centre-back, giving United more defensive options, which is something they badly need moving forward. He has also been lauded as a "monster" by football talent scout Jacek Kulig.
