Aussies overseas: Ferguson fires in a lean week for Australians

The latest round-up of how the Australians are performing in the IPL and county cricket as the World Cup and Australia A tours edge closer

Alex Malcolm07-May-2019Who’s in form and who’s notJames Pattinson was the only member of the Australia A squads playing overseas this week. He only played once though after Nottinghamshire’s Royal London One-Day Cup clash with Durham was washed out. Pattinson took 1 for 55 from nine overs and made an important 15 from 10 balls in a thrilling win over Northamptonshire.Ashton Turner, another Australia A squad member, oddly didn’t get selected in Rajasthan Royal’s last IPL game against Delhi.Chris Lynn, who is not in Australia’s winter squads, had an excellent finish to the IPL for Kolkata making 46 off 22 against Kings XI and then 41 from 29 in the loss to Mumbai Indians.Andrew Tye dismissed Lynn but had a very difficult season for Kings XI. After being the IPL’s leading wicket-taker in 2018 with 24, and an economy rate of 8.00, he took just three wickets in six games this season with an economy rate of 10.59. In his last two outings he conceded 78 runs in just six overs.#AsheswatchThe Royal London Cup continued in England this week as the County Championship remains on hold with World Cup preparations ramping up. Although 50-over white-ball form may not carry as much weight towards Ashes selection, the Australian selectors are undoubtedly keeping an eye on the players involved.Cameron Bancroft was starved of opportunity this week due to bad weather. It will be the third procedure he’s had on his right shoulder but he hopes it will fix the issue that has restricted his bowling and throwing.Performance of the weekCallum Ferguson is a forgotten man in Australian cricket. He was in the mix for the ODI tour of India but was dropped from South Australia’s Sheffield Shield team late in the season. He made 103 not out from just 95 balls for Worcestershire on Monday as they chased down 352 with ease at Derby. Ferguson had a great season in the Royal London Cup last year with Worcestershire and will be hoping to carry that form forward.

Nottingham Forest accept offer to sell Scarpa; Marinakis to make a profit

Nottingham Forest have now accepted an offer to sell Gustavo Scarpa, which will result in profit being made at The City Ground, according to Fabrizio Romano.

Nuno in at Nottingham Forest

It has been a busy week for owner Evangelos Marinakis, who decided to sack Steve Cooper earlier this week after more than two years in charge and bring in Nuno Espirito Santo as his replacement.

The former Wolves and Tottenham manager has already addressed the media and was full of praise for Cooper, saying:

"We have a good group of players, a squad that needs to become better. What Steve [Cooper] did here is amazing. Putting Forest back in the Premier League, keeping Forest in the Premier League. That shows how good Forest fans are, the respect they show for Steve. That says a lot about our fans. We are trying to improve his legacy."

Al-Ittihad's former managerNuno Espirito Santo.

Nuno then added:

"What we can bring is to try and improve the players. Help players become better, give them the solution that they need to compete well – starting on Saturday. Play good and win – that's the biggest challenge we have ahead of us. It's a huge challenge."

Nuno’s first game is a big one at home against Bournemouth in the Premier League on Saturday afternoon, and with the January transfer window just around the corner, he may need to make some quick decisions on who to keep and who to sell in his squad.

One player who hasn’t featured for the Reds this season is Gustavo Scarpa – currently out on loan at Olympiacos. Forest recently received a bid for his services, and it looks as if he is now on course to leave the club on a permanent basis.

Nottingham Forest accept Gustavo Scarpa bid

According to Romano, who took to X on Wednesday, Forest have accepted an offer for the attacking midfielder from Brazilian side Atletico Mineiro. The transfer expert said:

“Nottingham Forest have accepted bid in excess of €5m for Gustavo Scarpa to join Atletico Mineiro. Personal terms agreed and documents being exchanged soon.”

The 29-year-old, labelled as "creative" by Brazilian coach Tite, arrived in England at the beginning of the year on a free transfer from Palmeiras, however, things haven’t gone to plan at The City Ground or in Greece for that matter.

As can be seen, the attacking midfielder hasn’t scored or provided an assist in 2023 for Forest or Olympiacos, so heading back to Brazil where he had success with Palmeiras and Fluminense appears to be the right call for all involved.

Forest will also be making a profit in excess of €5m on a player they signed for nothing at the start of the year, so all parties involved in the deal could be happy at the outcome, and by the looks of things, it is only a matter of time until he departs for good.

Tom Latham, Kane Williamson grind Sri Lanka on batting day

The pair’s 162-run stand gave New Zealand a solid platform from which they can think of batting just once in the Test

The Report by Shashank Kishore16-Dec-2018

Associated Press

One of Sri Lanka’s two Test wins in New Zealand has come at the Basin Reserve. At the end of the second day’s play, it looks increasingly possible that they are unlikely to reprise that stunning win from 2006, after Kane Williamson and Tom Latham deflated them on a batting day as New Zealand nudged ahead by 29, with eight wickets in hand.In that Test, Sri Lanka had Chaminda Vaas, Muttiah Muralitharan and Lasith Malinga to call upon after posting close to the 282 they managed here. On Sunday, barring Lahiru Kumara’s bristling pace and bounce, there was little bite in the bowling. This meant a party for large parts of a three-hour passage in the afternoon for Williamson, who put together 162 with Latham at more than four runs per over.Watch LIVE on ESPN+

Readers from the US can also watch the match LIVE here, on ESPN+

If New Zealand were to be a little critical of their efforts, they would rue gifting both wickets to Sri Lanka. Jeet Raval’s wait for a maiden Test century continues as he was out to an ill-advised pull to a delivery that just didn’t come on, and took the toe-end off a Kumara short ball, as he played early, to wicketkeeper Niroshan Dickwella.Williamson missed his 20th Test century by just nine runs shortly after tea when he swept an innocuous Dhananjaya de Silva delivery to backward square leg. But Latham carried on, in his own industrious way, overcoming pockets of struggle and a hint of luck early in his innings, to bring up his seventh Test century, thereby breaking a three-figure deadlock that eluded him for 11 Tests since his marathon 177 in Wellington against Bangladesh in January last year.If these two efforts weren’t enough, Ross Taylor came in to replace Williamson and helped himself to a buffet spread against a tired attack to eke out a half-century, surpassing Brendon McCullum along the way to become New Zealand’s second-highest run-scorer in Test history. Like Latham, Taylor too was a recipient of Sri Lanka’s generosity when Dhananjaya put down a wild slash at first slip on 23 off Lakmal. With the fields largely spread out on the face of Dinesh Chandimal’s defensive captaincy, this was a perfect recipe to build a lead. This meant New Zealand were in a position where they could entertain thoughts of batting just once in this Test.It seemed as if Williamson was on pause-play mode, continuing from where he left off in Abu Dhabi 10 days ago, where he made a remarkable Test century against Yasir Shah and company on a crumbly surface. In comparison, Sri Lanka’s attack was much milder here, with the three-man pace pack struggling to sustain any kind of pressure, first with the new ball and then later in the day even as there was a hint of reverse swing. Dilruwan Perera, a force on dry subcontinent turners, also went wicketless.Where New Zealand employed spin for just three overs, Chandimal bowled Dilruwan and Dhanajaya for a combined 21 overs, for the cost of 89 runs and Williamson’s wicket, much against the run of play. But while he was at the crease, he profited from punchy strokes on the up, his first three scoring shots coming off boundaries as he quickly matched Latham, who had taken 74 balls to make just three runs more. The first of those boundaries was off a genuine outside edge that raced past second slip. It would be the only streaky boundary from Williamson’s bat. The second and third were trademark back-foot punches that pierced the off-side ring. At the end of the first session, it was amply clear which side felt the heat, as Williamson raced past his 29th Test fifty with the promise of much more. All along, Latham kept soldiering along at a steady pace without actually being noticed at the other end. That he managed to stave off Suranga Lakmal’s late inswing from around the stumps was largely due to his tight technique and the shelving of loose drives. He survived early in the innings too, because of poor field placement. Jabbing at a late inswinger from Lakmal, the ball popped off a thick inside edge to where a short leg would’ve been.Sri Lanka’s frustration increased when they lost a review in the third over after lunch, the 26th of the innings, when they referred an lbw appeal against Latham off Lakmal. The ball would’ve smashed into the stumps, but for the line – it pitched outside leg. From there on, there was hardly any noise or intensity created by the bowlers, who largely went through the motions. After a brief spell in the morning session, Mathews wasn’t given a bowl for the remainder of the day when it seemed as if Sri Lanka could do with his relentless plugging away around the off stump. It’s also possible this could’ve been part of his workload management, given this was the first time he was bowling in a Test since January 2017 because of a spate of injuries. With more pace on the ball courtesy Kumara and the erratic Kasun Rajitha, Williamson treated the Sunday crowd to an array of dazzling off-side play. This stand was built upon a solid foundation laid by the openers – Raval and Latham putting on 59, nine more than their highest stand in six innings on the UAE tour against Pakistan.Earlier in the day, Dickwella played a trademark scoop to begin proceedings, but Sri Lanka added just seven to their overnight 275 for 9 before last man Kumara was dismissed. He was superbly caught at leg slip by Colin de Grandhomme, off a thick inside edge that flew in between the batsman’s legs. Dickwella was stranded on 80, three short of his highest Test score, as Tim Southee finished with 6 for 68 – his eighth five-for in Tests. This was also his maiden five-for at the Basin Reserve.

Queensland strike back after Alex Doolan century

Alex Doolan scored his tenth first-class hundred•Getty Images

Australia coach Justin Langer asked for more centuries in the Sheffield Shield this season and veteran Tasmania batsman Alex Doolan provided the first on a tightly contested opening day against Queensland at the Gabba.Doolan made his tenth first-class hundred on a day when scoring was not free-flowing. He struck 17 fours and two sixes in his 193-ball 115.He put together a 54-run opening partnership with Jordan Silk and a 134-run stand for the second wicket with Beau Webster, who made 43. But Queensland’s seamers stuck to their task and pulled things back late in the day.One-time Test bowler Peter George was the pick of the bowlers, removing both Silk and Doolan caught behind. He also bowled Jake Doran cheaply with a full-toss as Tasmania slumped from 1 for 188 to 4 for 195 in the space of 34 balls. Both George and Luke Feldman were miserly, conceding just 91 in a combined 46.4 overs, and Feldman removed Tasmania’s captain George Bailey late in the day.Bad light stopped play just before the scheduled close. Matthew Wade was batting on 37 and Simon Milenko on 9. They will hope to build again early on day two.

Arsenal: Signing "complete" £15m gem could force Rice into a new role

Arsenal may have spent big throughout a transformative summer window, but it seems Mikel Arteta is far from content as he seeks to cement his stranglehold over the Premier League…

Who could Arsenal sign this January?

Having already welcomed Declan Rice, Jurrien Timber and Kai Havertz recently on big-money deals, it should come as no surprise that funds are likely low at the Emirates.

However, that does not mean they cannot afford to dip into the market should a bargain present itself, which is exactly the suggestion made by TEAMtalk.

The report notes the Gunners' interest in promising teenage sensation Arthur Vermeeren, who Royal Antwerp have made available for just £15m, but will face competition from other European powerhouses such as Manchester United, Liverpool and Barcelona.

declan-rice-arsenal-arteta-edu-thomas-partey-injury-jorginho

It is also stated that such a signing might force the former West Ham United captain into a new role, helping to further unlock the potential of the club's record signing.

Who is Arthur Vermeeren?

Having burst onto the scene at the start of the 2022/23 season, as a fresh-faced 17-year-old handed an opportunity, he quickly made himself indispensable for his boyhood club, starring in defensive midfield.

As a classic number six, boasting immense maturity for someone so young, it is actually his start to the new term that has certainly caught the eye, with the 18-year-old having posted an outstanding 7.45 average match rating, buoyed by his 88% pass accuracy combined with 1.6 key passes, 1.5 interceptions, 1.8 tackles and a whopping 8.3 ball recoveries per game, via Sofascore.

Despite his clear defensive prowess, other sections of the media have sought to laud the all-around assets of Vermeeren, with Football Talent Scout Jacek Kulig noting: "18 years of age. G/A wasn't his strength and now he starts adding it to his repertoire. One of the most complete young midfielders in Europe."

Then, former Arsenal favourite and current Barcelona sporting director Marc Overmars would laud the teenager with further praise, suggesting: "I have no doubt that he has a fantastic level. The first time I saw him he reminded me of Xavi and Iniesta, a footballer of the same profile".

With a silky skillset and a clear ability to create whilst dictating games, it seems the latter is perhaps a more appropriate comparison.

Should the defensive-minded youngster be brought in and handed an instant start by Arteta, who does boast an acute focus on developing youth, then it might allow Rice to push further forward and start adding more goals and assisting to a game already so well-rounded.

After all, last season for the Hammers he would record six goal contributions whilst managing one key pass per game in the league, earning praise for his offensive qualities despite largely featuring as a holding midfielder. After all, even Sky Sports's Sam Blitz would claim back in June: 'The midfielder is West Ham's most reliable attacking player, yet has some of the best defensive numbers in the Premier League.'

The technical quality is there for Rice to begin his offensive journey, and it could just take the acquisition of Vermeeren to instigate it. His solid presence just behind the Englishman might provide the perfect backbone to turn Arteta's side into one capable of winning it all.

Horan, as a World Cup winner with countless trophy triumphs to her name with club and country, could be forgiven for slowing down in a career-long pursuit of success. She says there is no chance of that happening, telling FIFA’s of ambition that will never burn out: “For me, the desire doesn't stop. Your career is short, so you just want to do as much as possible and be the best you can be. You don't get sick of winning, you don't get sick of the trophies, you don't get sick of the time with your team-mates and playing in front of such incredible fans. I just love the game. Will India recall Rohit and try out Pant?

Is there space for Rohit Sharma in the middle order?
India will want a third middle-order batsman to support Ajinkya Rahane and Virat Kohli. In South Africa, Rohit was given the opportunity to bolster the lower middle-order but he failed. The selectors felt Rohit was “less than satisfactory” in that series, in which he was played in the first two Tests ahead of Rahane. Rohit managed 78 runs in four innings and was dropped in the final Test in Johannesburg. He was also left out of the Afghanistan Test, with India A captain Karun Nair replacing him in the squad.

Likely Test squad

Openers: M Vijay, Shikhar Dhawan, KL Rahul
Middle order: Cheteshwar Pujara, Virat Kohli (capt), Ajinkya Rahane, Rohit Sharma/Karun Nair
Allrounder: Hardik Pandya
Wicketkeeper: Dinesh Karthik, Wriddhiman Saha/Parthiv Patel
Spinners: Kuldeep Yadav, R Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja
Fast bowlers: Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Ishant Sharma, Umesh Yadav, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Shami

Rohit recently said that he was not going to lose sleep wondering if he would be picked or not in the longest format, given half his career was over. But he has been in top form in the limited-overs leg of the UK tour, with two centuries and a fifty. And, in the prevailing hot conditions in the UK, the selectors might be tempted to consider Rohit – once again – ahead of Karun Nair, who has got starts for India A but hasn’t scored big. However, the main question Kohli and India coach Shastri would like to figure out is whether Rohit remains a viable long-term option. India are playing four Tests in Australia later this year, and they ought to invest wisely. Will Kuldeep Yadav be the X-factor in the Tests too?
England would have thought they had sorted Kuldeep out after the second T20I, but the left-arm wristspinner proved otherwise, taking nine wickets in the first two matches of the ODI series, including a six-for in his maiden ODI in England. Kohli revealed that he would be tempted to include Kuldeep in the Test squad based on his ODI form.Kuldeep has already played two Tests and has shown the attitude and hunger to duel with the batsmen. If picked, he will ideally be part of a three-pronged spin attack alongside the senior pairing of R Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja.Getty Images

Who will be the reserve wicketkeeper?
Rishabh Pant the batsman has rattled many a bowler in domestic and List A cricket, making a strong and legitimate case for a place in the limited-overs squad. But it is his keeping skills that have remained unconvincing, with experts pointing out that his technique as a wicketkeeper needs work. He has not played a lot of first-class cricket either.Pant is only 20 years old, so he has time to grow and should not be worried. And, despite all this, there are whispers that he could be one of the contenders for the reserve wicketkeeper’s post for the England Tests. With Wriddhiman Saha likely to miss at least part of the five-Test series, Dinesh Karthik is likely to be the first-choice wicketkeeper. If Saha’s thumb injury does not heal in time for him to even be named the reserve keeper, then India will need another back-up for Karthik. In the past decade and a bit more the selectors have turned to Karthik and Parthiv Patel each time MS Dhoni and – later – Saha missed out in Tests. Parthiv did play the last two Tests of the South Africa series this year, but the team management was not happy with his glovework. So will the selectors gamble with a left-field choice in Pant, an unfinished product as far his keeping goes? It is plausible. Pant is currently touring England as part of the India A series, and has 15 dismissals in eight matches including 14 catches and one stumping. India A arrived in England in the early part of June, which means Pant is well adapted to the conditions and the grounds. If he is picked, it will not only be a bold move, but clearly a forward-thinking one too.Should KL Rahul open or bat at No. 3?
India should retain the three openers that featured in the previous two Test series this year – South Africa in January and the one-off match in June against Afghanistan. Although M Vijay, Shikhar Dhawan and KL Rahul hit form against first-timers Afghanistan, neither of the three men lasted long in South Africa. Still they remain India’s best available options.Rahul also offers the added advantage of coming in at No. 3 as he did in the Afghanistan Test, displacing the incumbent Cheteshwar Pujara to No. 4. With Kohli’s penchant for boldness and intent, Rahul is likely to be part of the first XI, which might add pressure on Pujara to produce his very best.
